1) E.T Makes A Cameo In The Movie

The same species of E.T makes a cameo appearance during a scene in the movie. They are called ‘ Asogians ‘ and can be seen in the Galactic Senate. This was some payback for Steven Spielberg, who included some Star Wars toys in E.T .

2) George Lucas Approached Three People To Direct Episode I: Ron Howard, Robert Zemeckis, and Steven Spielberg .

All three of them told Lucas that he should do it himself, which ended up happening. This was Lucas’ first movie he directed in the series since A New Hope .

3) A Popular Rumor Is That Tupac Was Considered For The Role Of Mace Windu

According to Rick Clifford, who worked for Death Row Records, Tupac Shakur was approached to read some lines for George Lucas. This would be for the role of Mace Windu, which was eventually played by Samuel L. Jackson.

4) Ray Park Was Originally On The Stunt Team Before Getting Cast As Darth Maul

George Lucas and the production team were so impressed by Park that they decided to cast him as Darth Maul.

5) Benicio Del Toro Was Rumored To Be Originally Cast As Darth Maul

The rumor goes that Del Toro dropped out after learning that most of Maul’s lines would be cut from the film.

6) Over 3000 Kids Auditioned For The Role Of Anakin Skywalker

This included names like Cameron Finley, Justin Berfield and Michael Angarano. Jake Lloyd ended up getting the role.

7) Another Popular Rumor Is That Michael Jackson Wanted To Play  Jar Jar Binks.

Jackson wanted to do the role in “prosthetics and makeup”. George Lucas wanted to do the role in CGI. Hard to imagine the King of Pop playing the role of Jar Jar.

You Won't Beat This Star Wars: The Phantom Menace Quiz

Find out just how much you know about this controversial Star Wars movie.

The Star Wars prequels have divided opinions amongst fans since they were first released.

It's now over twenty years since Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace was released and it still remains a controversial entry in the Star Wars saga. From complaints about poor CGI, to disappointment with the casting choices (and we'd better not say too much about midichlorians), the film certainly proved to be divisive for fans.

In spite of all the hate fired at it, the movie does have quite a few good points: it gives us some great new characters in Qui Gon Jinn and Mace Windu, and brings back some old favourites like Obi Wan and Palpatine, giving us a chance to see what they were like when they were younger. Even the effects, though they might not have stood the test of time so well, were ambitious at the time, with no other film making so much use of computer technology.

Whether you love the Phantom Menace or think that the franchise would be better off without it, one thing's for certain, it will continue to be a hotly debated episode in the epic saga.

Hoping to resolve the matter with a blockade of deadly battleships, the greedy Trade Federation has stopped all shipping to the small planet of Naboo.

We don't know much about Viceroy Gunray. We don't know the specifics of his problem with the trade tax or what Lord Sidious promised him that made him think, "Yeah, the guy talks like a demon must be on the up-and-up." All we know we get from the opening crawl: He's greedy. This drives him to make some ultra-poor decisions.

QUI-GON: Battle droids. OBI-WAN: It's an invasion army. QUI-GON: This is an odd play for the Trade Federation. We've got to warn the Naboo and contact Chancellor Valorum. Let's split up. Stow aboard separate ships and meet down on the planet.

This battle isn't Qui-Gon's fight, so his decision to warn the Naboo is altruistic of him. We imagine he could have easily stolen a ship and saved his own butt. Although if he's going down with the invasion army, how much forewarning can he possibly give the Naboo? A minute? Two, tops?

BOSS NASS: Wesa no like da Naboo. Tkk-tkk-tkk-tkk-tkk-tkk-tkk. Da Naboo tink day so smarty. Day tink day brains so big. OBI-WAN: Once those droids take control of the surface, they will take control of you. BOSS NASS: Mesa no tink so. Day not know of uss-en. OBI-WAN: You and the Naboo form a symbiont circle. What happens to one of you will affect the other. You must understand this. BOSS NASS: Wesa no carrre-nn about da Naboo.

Boss Nass only considers the needs of his own people, neglecting the Naboo due to his distrust. While not as greedy as Sidious or Gunray, Boss Nass lacks the compassion of characters like Obi-Wan, and he'll pay for it when the droid army is finished occupying the Naboo.

Was ‘Star Wars: The Phantom Menace’ really that bad of a movie?

Did Phantom Menace really miss the mark that much?

To say  Star Wars Episode I – The Phantom Menace   was released in 1999 to massive hype would be a galactic understatement.

It was the franchise’s first feature since 1983’s  Return of the Jedi , and as some fans may recall, these were the caveman days when content wasn’t being churned out regularly on a streaming platform. In the ’90s, one of the only things die-hard fans had to indulge in was the incredible  Thrawn  novel trilogy by Timothy Zahn. (Some argue that the success of the books was a catalyst in getting George Lucas to start the prequels.)

After its colossal release,  The Phantom Menace  was peppered with lukewarm reviews; while some critics defended and praised the film, many lambasted it, and believed it to be an unworthy successor to the original movies, and  Star Wars ‘ legacy overall. In fact, its notoriety was so strong amongst fans that years later, Red Letter Media created a series of mega-popular videos criticizing the movie. (The seven-part series amassed millions of views, and helped popularize the video essay critique on YouTube.)

Today, on Rotten Tomatoes ,  Phantom Menace  still remains one of the lowest-rated projects in the  Star Wars  franchise. So, let’s get into it: was  Episode I  really that bad of a movie?

Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace has a surprisingly linear and compact narrative

For all the flack Episode I gets, the movie has a tight and straightforward storyline. The plot begins with Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi meeting with the Trade Federation, things go south, and then they have to improvise on Naboo. After saving the princess, they are forced to land on Tatooine where they meet Anakin Skywalker. Things get political on Coruscant, more on that later, and back on Naboo fans get to witness the first true Jedi-Sith clash. All of these events are portrayed pretty concisely, almost like levels on a video game.

Overall, it tells the story it needs to tell, albeit in a very linear manner. Sure, the Tatooine scenes are a bit sluggish, but everything Episode I needs to convey, it does. The Republic is constantly shown struggling at doing its job, the Jedi are shown at their prime and their skill is far greater than anything displayed in the original movies, and we get to see Anakin’s story begin from a young boy.

Episode I ‘s story was blunt, but it was very different from New Hope , which is good. It gave viewers a completely unique galaxy to what was portrayed in the original trilogy. Simply put, no matter what story Phantom Menace told, the hype was just too off the charts. Nothing could have satisfied the fandom in 1999. Nothing.

The Phantom Menace portrays a complicated and absurdly bureaucratic political system

The Phantom Menace  begins with a very political opening crawl. Whereas  New Hope  briefly and ambiguously mentions a faraway Senate,  Episode I  directly tackles the galaxy’s political framework. An inept governing body beginning to crumble was depicted wonderfully. Sure, discussions over trade routes and taxation debates aren’t exactly thrilling, but they were necessary story components.

The original trilogy adeptly portrayed a good versus evil conflict that engulfed the galaxy. However, the final antagonist was an all-powerful Emperor who ruled over everything. This simplifies things. This isn’t bad; that’s exactly the type of political framework the story required. This was the proper setting for Luke Skywalker ‘s character arc to shine. He was the humble farmboy turned heroic rebel. The galaxy’s politics didn’t need to be explored deeply in this context.

For the introduction to the rise and fall of Anakin Skywalker, however, something more complex is needed, and that’s what  The Phantom Menace  gave us. The first prequel showcases just how corrupt and inefficient the Galactic Senate can be. While the people of Naboo are suffering and starving, the politicians on Coruscant are engaged in endless prattle and debate. Of course, Palpatine was maneuvering things from behind the scenes, but the Naboo crisis still displayed just how inefficient the Senate was at dealing with actual problems.

The Coruscant scenes also help viewers understand how massive the Republic and the Galaxy are. The world-building done in these moments   sells the petty politics plaguing everything. The scenes also foreshadow the inevitable; if the Republic can’t handle a singular crisis like Naboo, what happens when something bigger arrives… like a colossal war?

The politics portrayed in set the stage for Anakin’s fall. The administrative quagmire that is the Republic’s government is the perfect setting for a young, angry, and brash Anakin to grow up in because he can witness all of its inefficiencies, leading him directly to Darth Sidious.

The hate for characters like Jar Jar Binks was completely overblown

The disdain thrown Jar Jar’s way after the film’s release was one of the most melodramatic fandom reactions ever seen. Ahmed Best played a very clumsy and talkative character who found himself falling into a galactic adventure – just like C-3PO.

Fans reacted like the original films didn’t have their own set of overly clumsy characters. How many times did Threepio interrupt the story’s heart by cutting into a dramatic scene? How about when a group of stuffed teddy bears took down the professional Imperial Army? Acting like Jar Jar was a new phenomenon unique to the prequels was preposterous.

The reaction to Jake Lloyd and his portrayal of young Anakin also went entirely overboard. The actor, and the character, was a boy. Mark Hamill’s Luke Skywalker had some very corny dialogue in A New Hope . It’s only natural that Anakin, who was far younger than Luke, also had some.

Overall, the characters in Episode I were like any others: aimless people living in a galaxy far, far away who happen to get sucked into a mighty adventure.

I'm a blind man, but I don't let that get in the way of my dating life. I'm hopeful I'll find love one day.

• It's difficult dating while blind, but I'm hopeful I'll find love one day.

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Richard Wheatley. It has been edited for length and clarity.

I have very few memories from before I went blind, which happened after I got a brain tumor at 5.

One of my final "sighted" memories was watching "Star Wars: The Phantom Menace." I can remember every scene. That film has had some bad reviews over the years, but "it made me go blind" might be its worst yet.

My parents took the news about my tumor hard. Initially, they were told the tumor was probably inoperable and I'd be dead by age 10.

My neurosurgeon managed to remove 90 percent of the tumor. I survived, but my optic nerves did not. I'm now 28.

Despite earlier challenges, I live a pretty full and fulfilling life

I'm legally blind and use a cane. I have some sight in my left eye but none in my right. I can see large objects, including people, but I can't see the details to distinguish them.

I attended a boarding school for visually impaired students. I called it Blind Hogwarts. As I have some very limited vision, I'd sometimes be enlisted to guide those with zero vision on school trips. It was literally the blind leading the blind.

I use speech software and Braille, but I'm a very slow Braille reader. The speech software helps me in my job as a freelance news writer.

My dating life has always been interesting

Blind Hogwarts was small so we mingled between years more than other schools, and we hopped from relationship to relationship quickly. I had one long relationship and a couple of shorter ones, all with visually impaired girls.

For the most part, I've dated visually impaired women, and I've only recently dated fully sighted women. On those dates — and there haven't been too many of them — I sometimes wonder if I'm reading the signs correctly. So much of dating comes down to body language, which is hard for me to read. I struggle to know if someone's indicating that I should keep going or back off. It knocks my confidence a bit.

I recently started using dating apps. I really rely on what people write in their profiles; I can't rely on photos to tell if someone's interesting. It's an imprecise science, and I'm still figuring it out.

Usually, when I meet someone on the apps, the first thing I tell them is I'm blind. I often find myself apologizing, especially if I do something weird — like trying to pry open clearly locked toilet doors.

I try to find the humor in it all

I remain single at this stage, but my hobbies keep me busy and fulfilled. I've got my community radio show, and I run a topical quiz every Friday evening. I also have my stand-up comedy show called "You Don't Know You're Beautiful," where I find humor in my life as a visually impaired guy. I recently took it to the Edinburgh Fringe, my fourth time there.

In my show, I joke about the benefits of being blind, like not being able to drive but getting to park for free. Sometimes I ask the audience what I look like: I get Ken, of Barbie and Ken. And Benny and/or Björn from Abba.

Aside from having my own Netflix comedy special and being a BBC radio presenter in the future, I'd like to find love.

I want to get married and be an embarrassing dad; I'd be great at that. Eventually, I'd like to be one of those granddads who gets told to stop spoiling his grandchildren.

I guess we'll see where the world of dating apps takes me.
