ABOUT NORDHAVN 96

She is based on the hull of the highly successful Nordhavn 86 and features a 10-foot cockpit extension that allows for space increases in several areas of the boat, including below decks in the crew area and lazarette, on the main deck in the cockpit and saloon, on the pilothouse deck with a larger sky lounge or upper master stateroom (depending on layout), and on the fly bridge. The fuel capacity remains the same, but the N96’s longer water line may result in slight improvements in fuel consumption. Likewise, displacement remains virtually unchanged. According to PAE’s Chief of Design, Jeff Leishman, extending molds is a straightforward process. And it is a cost-effective way to give a customer the additional space they desire without incurring the substantial expense of constructing an entirely new hull. Several of Nordhavn’s other models, including the N52 (based on the N47 hull), the N60 and 63 (based on the N55 hull), the N68 and N76 (based on the N64 hull), and the N76 (based on the N72 hull), have utilized this strategy, and it has been a tremendously successful one. The extended models have proven to be so advantageous that they are now more popular than their predecessors. And contrary to reports, there are no disadvantages to adding hull extensions. According to Leishman, these modifications have been shown to improve performance.

2017 Nordhavn 96 "LACEY KAY"

In 2017, Pacific Asian Enterprises (PAE) expanded their Nordhavn line with the addition of the Nordhavn 96. Being well received by the exploration yacht community, the Nordhavn 96 won the 2017 International Yacht and Aviation Award.  Lacey Kay  was the third in this line, just after the launching of  Vivierae II . This new design bridged the gap between the large cruising exploration yacht and super-yacht categories. She was designed for the yachting enthusiast who seeks the super-yacht comfort and style in a boat that is still able to be managed with no or minimal crew, and travel big open oceans.

The 96 series is based on the hull of the very successful Nordhavn 86, while incorporating a larger cockpit, lazarette, and better crew space below deck. The greater volume is also felt on the main deck level, in the dining and galley areas, and on the pilothouse deck with a large upper master stateroom. The greater length also allows for a more spacious fly bridge with hot tub.

Lacey Kay  was built by her current owner, making frequent trips to the yard during the build process. He opted for the additional fuel tanks, giving her an aggregate capacity of 9,575 gallons. With her increased waterline hull length, her fuel burn was actually slightly reduced from the 86. At her most efficient cruise speed of 9 knots, she burns about 10 gallons per hour per side, plus 5 gallons for the house generator, giving her an approximate 4,000 NM range; well enough for a Pacific crossing. According to Jeff Leishman, PAE's Chief of Design, extending her hull length has allowed Nordhavn to enhance the performance of, and increase stability and comfort in this well-proven hull design.

This new design looks to serve as a stepping stone between the large cruiser and megayacht categories. For the enthusiast who is seeking megayacht-like style and features in a boat that is still able to be managed with no – or minimal – crew, the Nordhavn 96 is the ideal solution.

She is based on the hull of the very successful Nordhavn 86, and incorporates a 10-foot cockpit extension that allows for space bumps in several areas of the boat including below decks in the crew area and lazarette; at main deck level in the cockpit and saloon; on the pilothouse deck with a larger sky lounge or upper master stateroom (depending on layout); and an even more capacious fly bridge. Fuel capacity remains the same, although slight gains in fuel burn are likely due to the N96’s longer water line. Displacement also stays virtually the same. “It is a fairly easy procedure to extend the molds,” says Jeff Leishman, PAE’s Chief of Design. And it is an efficient way to give a customer the additional space they are seeking without the drastic cost of building an entirely new hull. Nordhavn has employed this method of thinking with several of its other models including the N52 (based on the N47 hull), the N60 and 63 (based on the N55 hull), the N68 (based on the N64 hull) and the N76 (based on the N72 hull), and the approach has been a hugely successful one. The stretched out models proved themselves to be so advantageous that, as a result, they have become more popular than their predecessors. And contrary to published reports, there is zero downside to adding hull extensions. Says Leishman: “These types of modifications have actually demonstrated to enhance performance.”

Imagine having access to the luxuries of a 100-foot boat at a smaller boat investment. With the Nordhavn 96 it’s possible: using the already enormous N86 hull as a jumping off point, the amplified superstructure of the 96 ups the ante in interior volume with accommodations that are nothing short of remarkable. The saloon and galley measures 43 feet in length and the combination of wheelhouse, captain’s cabin and sky lounge measure almost 34 feet in length. She includes a vast, full-width owner’s suite in addition to the captain’s cabin, three guest staterooms with ensuite heads, plus the spacious crew wing which comprises a roomy cabin and head aft with exterior entrance. A laundry and utility room are also provided. The luxurious and functional interior is finished with fine hardwoods, beautiful moldings and raised panels combined with stone floors, granite countertops, the finest hardware, lighting and fixtures. Like the N86, the interior of the Nordhavn 96 is customizeable to the owner’s personal vision.

Driving the hull are twin MTU Series 60 engines rated at 600 hp each spinning 48-inch propellers through 4.59 to 1 reduction gears allow a transatlantic cruising speed of 10 knots. With over 7,000 gallons of fuel aboard and throttled back to the 9 knot range, this new design can run roughly 4,000 miles before refueling. The twin configuration includes integral skegs and two large attached rudders for maximum directional control and propellers that are protected within their own apertures. The advanced high-pressure, common rail, electronically injected engines are fitted with wet exhaust, commercial rated transmissions with large reduction gears and offer efficiency and reliability never before possible.

An extensive list of standard machinery details includes central hydraulics with 20-square-foot stabilizers, 50 hp bow and stern thrusters, hydraulic bilge pumping and anchor wash downs, dual Onan generators, a universal AC electrical system for worldwide use, 3,500 lb. Marquipt davit, chilled water air-conditioning system, 2000 gallons-per-day water maker, automatic engine room and lazarette fire system with ventilation dampeners, an on-deck Jacuzzi and much more. 

The Nordhavn 96 truly is the ideal boat for the yachtsman looking to step up his game. For one busy N86 owner looking to move up, it was the layout and roomy, separated crew quarters of the N96 – ideal for his full-time four-person crew – that cinched the deal over other similar-sized boats. Capabilities

Twin MTU Series 60 engines rated at 600 hp each spin 48-inch propellers through 4.59 to 1 reduction gears, providing sufficient power for transoceanic cruising at speeds of up to 10 knots.  The design of this used Nordhavn 96 yacht makes it possible to cruise for about 4,000  miles at a speed of approximately 9 knots before refueling is required. Propellers are protected within separate apertures, and maximum directional control is achieved with the integral skegs and a pair of attached rudders included in the twin configuration.

In 2017, Pacific Asian Enterprises (PAE) expanded their Nordhavn line with the addition of the Nordhavn 96. Being well received by the exploration yacht community, the Nordhavn 96 won the 2017 International Yacht and Aviation Award. Lacey Kay was the third in this line, just after the launching of Vivierae II.

In 2017, Pacific Asian Enterprises (PAE) expanded their Nordhavn line with the addition of the Nordhavn 96. Being well received by the exploration yacht community, the Nordhavn 96 won the 2017 International Yacht and Aviation Award. Lacey Kay was the third in this line, just after the launching of Vivierae II. This new design bridged the gap between the large cruising exploration yacht and super-yacht categories. She was designed for the yachting enthusiast who seeks the super-yacht comfort and style in a boat that is still able to be managed with no or minimal crew, and travel big open oceans.The 96 series is based on the hull of the very successful Nordhavn 86, while incorporating a larger cockpit, lazarette, and better crew space below deck. The greater volume is also felt on the main deck level, in the dining and galley areas, and on the pilothouse deck with a large upper master stateroom. The greater length also allows for a more spacious fly bridge with hot tub.Lacey Kay was built by her current owner, making frequent trips to the yard during the build process. He opted for the additional fuel tanks, giving her an aggregate capacity of 9,575 gallons. With her increased waterline hull length, her fuel burn was actually slightly reduced from the 86. At her most efficient cruise speed of 9 knots, she burns about 10 gallons per hour per side, plus 5 gallons for the house generator, giving her an approximate 4,000 NM range; well enough for a Pacific crossing. According to Jeff Leishman, PAE's Chief of Design, extending her hull length has allowed Nordhavn to enhance the performance of, and increase stability and comfort in this well-proven hull design.

In 2017, Pacific Asian Enterprises (PAE) expanded their Nordhavn line with the addition of the Nordhavn 96. Being well received by the exploration yacht community, the Nordhavn 96 won the 2017 International Yacht and Aviation Award.  Lacey Kay  was the third in this line, just after the launching of  Vivierae II . This new design bridged the gap between the large cruising exploration yacht and super-yacht categories. She was designed for the yachting enthusiast who seeks the super-yacht comfort and style in a boat that is still able to be managed with no or minimal crew, and travel big open oceans. The 96 series is based on the hull of the very successful Nordhavn 86, while incorporating a larger cockpit, lazarette, and better crew space below deck. The greater volume is also felt on the main deck level, in the dining and galley areas, and on the pilothouse deck with a large upper master stateroom. The greater length also allows for a more spacious fly bridge with hot tub. Lacey Kay  was built by her current owner, making frequent trips to the yard during the build process. He opted for the additional fuel tanks, giving her an aggregate capacity of 9,575 gallons. With her increased waterline hull length, her fuel burn was actually slightly reduced from the 86. At her most efficient cruise speed of 9 knots, she burns about 10 gallons per hour  per side, plus 5 gallons for the house generator, giving her an approximate 4,000 NM range; well enough for a Pacific crossing. According to Jeff Leishman, PAE’s Chief of Design, extending her hull length has allowed Nordhavn to enhance the performance of, and increase stability and comfort in this well-proven hull design.

Forward on the main deck level is the enclosed wheelhouse which includes a large bench seat that doubles as a

berth, with storage below. There are doors that open to the side decks, both port and starboard, a ladder to the

flybridge, a curved companionway step forward to starboard that leads to the crews quarters and engine room and a

door to starboard that leads aft to the galley, main salon and aft deck areas.

Aft of the wheelhouse, to port, is the large galley which was completely refitted in 2006 with all new appliances,

cabinets and granite counter tops. The galley is followed aft by the spacious main salon with leather sofa, two

occasional chairs, glass cocktail table and two end tables. The salon bulkheads are teak, there are cellular blinds on

the windows and there is an entertainment center with wide screen TV and storage lockers at the forward bulkhead,

followed aft by a dining table with chairs and spiral companionway step to the master and guest staterooms, aft to

starboard. Aft of the main salon is the spacious aft deck area with full width transom seat, 4 wicker chairs, tables and

Below decks, the master and guest staterooms are at the rear of the boat, accessed by stairs from the main salon. Aft

is the full beam master stateroom with private head and his and hers hanging lockers with abundant drawers and

lockers for storage. Forward of the master are two identical guest staterooms with twin berths, port and starboard.

The starboard stateroom has an ensuite head with shower and the day head, accessible from the companionway to

port, also has a stall shower. The décor in the master and guest staterooms and heads was updated in 2006.

Below decks, forward, are the crews' quarters, utility area and entry to the engine room. This area is accessed by a

spiral companionway, to starboard of the lower helm. The anchor locker is forward, followed by a captain's cabin with

twin berths P & S and abundant storage lockers and drawers. Aft of this cabin, to port, is a full head with stall shower,

followed aft on the centerline by a utility/crew area with a Manitowoc commercial icemaker, Kenmore chest freezer,

full height storage locker and two berths. The entry to the walk-in engine room is at the aft bulkhead of the utility room.

The large U-shaped galley is portside on the main deck level, abaft the wheelhouse and forward of the main

salon/dining area. The galley was completely updated in 2006 with all new cabinets, granite counter tops and

stainless steel faced appliances. The cabinets have the "auto close" feature, with additional sea catches.
