New and old sailors alike gather on our beautiful Hillsborough Bay for a tradition unlike any other. Davis Islands' Thursday Night Series has been the biggest sailing series in the South. New sailors have learned the skills of the persons who were in their shoes years ago. Racing sailboats keeps us happy.

Interested in coming out to sail? Check the Thursday Night Racing page for more information. We race in mildly inclimate weather. We will not race in dangerous conditions. The Race Committee will make the decision to sail, or not to sail, no earlier than 6PM.

Skippers, please sign yourself and your crew up for RC duties here. Each skipper is expected to take one turn on RC.

Welcome to Atlanta Yacht Club

Established 1950

Situated on Lake Allatoona,  Atlanta Yacht Club  has been home to small-boat pleasure and racing sailors for over 70 years.   All through the year  our shores are dappled with one-design sailing craft heading out for an afternoon on the water with friends and family.

Whether they come for friendly competition, sailing classes, or just an opportunity to relax with a day on the lake, what binds our members and families to AYC is their commitment to the sport of sailing and their choice to spend their leisure time in an activity where everyone in the family can “play”.

The Atlanta Yacht Club is home to several active one-design racing fleets: Snipe, Thistle, Y-Flyer, Flying Scot, Laser, and Sunfish. The Junior Yacht Club trains in 420s and Optimist prams.  The club also hosts fleet-sponsored national regattas throughout the year.  We are known for our competitive racing and our hospitality!

Is at the heart of CYC

Since our charter in 1853, it has been the mission of CYC to promote sailing, camaraderie, and fellowship on the water. From lifelong friends taking out a newcomer to a child on the front of their mom's Sunfish, there are many ways to get involved. CYC offers competitive racing for every age and skill level. We have events in the ocean and sound, so there is something for the whole family! The wind will lure you to the water with a sea breeze that kicks almost every afternoon.

Our competitive sailors are all about the points and the silver. You’ll find serious sailors representing all club fleets racing in our sound and ocean events. While racing is most active during the summer, we have competitive events every month of the year. We proudly host regional, national, and international regattas here at CYC.

It's not always about speed. Grab your gang and soak in a beautiful sunset as part of our 'Sip N Sail' sessions, or take your own boat around Bird Island for a full moon sail. It's hard to beat cruising down to Masonboro for a picnic and a swim. Cruising is all about taking it slow and enjoying the ride, not rounding the marks. Everyone is welcome to cruise!

Race Committee

It takes a lot of volunteers to pull off safe, fun, and professional sailing events. Our fantastic race committee volunteers make it possible. Important roles exist both on-shore and on the course. Interested in helping out but unsure where to start? We offer training for new race committee members. Volunteers can give a couple of hours or snag a front-row seat to racing action.

Sailing Calendar

Adult sailing.

Our adult sailing classes cover the basics of sailing and we offer advanced sailing for those interested in joining our larger boat fleets.

Junior Sailing

The CYC junior sailing program and summer camps serve ages 5 - 18 and are open to the public. Our summer programs focus on sailing, safety and fun!

Sail Lessons

Our US Sailing-certified instructors offer private lessons to all ages and skill levels. Lessons are hands-on with more time spent on the water than shore.

Sailing Club, Sailboat Rentals & Sailing Lessons

Closure of long beach facility.

The marina we operate out of in Long Beach has not been able to negotiate a lease extension with the Hotel Maya and the hotel has decided to close the marina. We are therefore forced to close our Long Beach club and are in the process of moving the fleet back to San Diego. There are unfortunately no other marinas in the Long Beach/Los Angeles harbor that can accommodate the fleet along with an office to run the operation. We regret having to close the Long Beach club but at this point we have no other viable options. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to call us at 619-291-7245 or email at [email protected]

Lady of the Lake

Club history.

The Great Salt Lake Yacht Club was originally established on May 10, 1877 with Captain David Lazarus Davis as Commodore. Members included all crew of the vessels: “Waterwitch”, “Petrel”, “Mary Askey”, and an unnamed boat belonging to a Mr. Hudson.

Throughout its history, the club has ebbed and flowed along with the level of the lake, experiencing the record highs of the 1980s to the lower water levels of recent years.  Today, there are about 300 slips with facilities operated by the Utah State Parks Department, as the marina itself is in the state park.

News & Updates

Rediscover the joy of sailing on the great salt lake, join us for the great salt lake sailfest 2024.

The level of the lake fluctuates, but at normal levels (4200 ft MSL) the average depth is 15 feet. The maximum depth is about 31 feet. In recent history the lake level has varied from 4191 to 4212 feet MSL. The current lake level can be found on the USGS website .

There are few hazards to navigation in the main body of the lake, except there is a relative shallow reef at the harbor mouth. This usually doesn’t present a problem except in shallow water years for deep draft boats. Currently one should sail out using the marked Deep Channel.

It is advisable to get a navigation chart before venturing too far into the lake. These charts are available from the Great Salt Lake Yacht Club.

https://www.gslyc.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/causeway2.jpg

The lake is about 75 miles long and about 45 miles wide. However, the lake is divided into halves by a railroad causeway. The south arm on the right side (Gilbert Bay) is the most used portion of the lake because the north arm (Gunnison Bay) on the left side is quite desolate.

sailing yacht club

The lake’s surface area varies quite drastically as its elevation changes. In 1986, the lake reached a historical high an of 4,212 feet. At that time, the lake expanded to cover about 3,300 square miles. Lake levels hit their historic low in 1963, when the surface stood at 4,191 feet in elevation and covered 950 square miles. As of June 2003, the lake is at about 4,197 feet and covers about 1,200 square miles.

Salinity varies inversely as the lake level. As the lake rises (more fresh water) the salinity drops.  Because the south arm receives all of the fresh water, and since the causeway (see How Big?) prevents adequate circulation, the south arm is less saline (currently about 9%) than the north arm (currently about 25%).

The saturation point of salinity is around 25%, so the north arm is now saturated, and the south arm is getting fresher. This is not good because it will eventually change the entire GSL ecosystem. This imbalance is visible in the causeway photograph where the water north of the causeway is noticeably red due to the bacteria concentration in the super saturated water.

Normally all that is required for inboard engines is regular zinc replacement to prevent galvanic corrosion. It is wise to flush outboard engines after each use.

As far as topside care, sails and hardware, the normal marine environment precautions are recommended, i.e. rinse off salty sails, and flush hardware with fresh water after use.

The only living thing (in any abundance) in the lake are brine shrimp and algae. The shrimp feed on the algae, so both the shrimp and algae populations are cyclical.

Most folks use bottom paint to prevent algae growth. Left unchecked, the algae can get quite thick, but can be removed with a good scrubbing. Almost any bottom paint will do. Your choice should be determined by your intended use (like racing, for example).

sailboat being craned into the Great Salt Lake

We do not have haul out facilities at the lake but we do have many “crane days” scheduled throughout the season. A crane is hired, and the cost is shared among the users. Crane days are major “events” with a lot of participation, and people help one another out.

a truck hauling a sailboat out of the lake.

For smaller boats (and for those with an adventurous spirit) there is a good launch ramp. After launching or hauling out, the trailer must be thoroughly washed to prevent corrosion.

Sailing Summer Camp 2024

sailing yacht club

The Lauderdale Yacht Club Summer Sailing Program is an exciting chance for new and current young sailors in the Fort Lauderdale community to spend some time on the water while learning about sailing, seamanship and the environment! The Lauderdale Yacht Club Mission Statement includes LYC taking an active role in teaching sailing and seamanship to the community and Summer Camp is that opportunity! Summer Sailing is open to children of both Members and Non-Members alike. Keep scrolling down for more information about the different courses!

SUMMER SAILING IS FOUR TWO WEEK SESSIONS. SAIL THEM ALL OR JUST ONE!

Here is some information that will come in handy for you! Pick up and drop off are at the gate in front of the Sailing Center. Please have your picture ID available for pickup.

FAQs It’s raining, storming, cold etc……is there still class? We will always put safety first at LYC. Staff routinely monitors radar for thunderstorms, and all coaches are qualified to run classes that maximize training value based on the conditions. However, if there is inclement weather not suitable for sailing, this summer sailors will need to be picked up when notified by the sailing program.

What should my child wear & pack each day? • Lunch and snacks in a water-resistant bag. Please no potato chips or nuts. When potato chips spill in the boats it makes the deck slippery. • Dress in comfortable clothes that can get wet. • Closed-toe shoes that can get wet are best. Please no flip-flops or sandals. • Pack a towel • Sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, rash guard, etc.) • Coast Guard Type III approved life jacket • Refillable water bottle. • We recommend writing your child’s name on everything, as things tend to get left behind when kids are having fun. Having a bag or backpack to hold everything in is a must!

What food is provided each day? LYC will have a daily buffet lunch for sailors including vegetarian options.

Where do I get sailing clothes? In Fort Lauderdale we are fortunate enough to have one of the largest West Marine stores in the country nearby. They carry all of the gear you will need.

Are classes pro-rated if I have to miss part of a session? No. Every year we have to turn many sailors away and put others on waiting lists because we operate on a first come, first serve basis. Under these circumstances we cannot justify prorating.

Can I make changes or cancel? All requests for cancellations or changes must be made to the sailing office via email to [email protected]. Cancellations made 7 days or more before the start date of the session will be refunded in full. After that, there are no refunds; however, we will offer a credit towards a future session (space permitting). There is no pro-rate for partial attendance.

Who are your coaches?

LYC coaches are at minimum US Sailing Level 1 as well as First Aid and CPR certified. For more details about US Sailing certification please refer to the Training section at ussailing.org. Several coaches also hold higher US Sailing certification, and additional relevant certifications.

What about supervision before and after class? Please be on time dropping off in the morning and be prompt picking up at the end of the session or when notified due to inclement weather. Contact Liz Turner at LYC Kid’s Club for supervision outside of our normal class times [email protected]

Can I stay and watch my child sail? Parents are welcome to watch from a distance on our northeast floating dock. Our experience has shown that most young sailors learn best without the distraction of a parent. All of our coaches are trained to run safe and fun classes and appreciate being able to do so without parental input during class. Please ask the Sailing Director if you have any questions.

I lost my… Did you find it? We have a lost and found dock box next to the Sailing Office. Please make sure to label everything very clearly with your name and phone number. With more than 500 junior sailors participating in our program annually, we have a very full lost and found by the end of each season. Unclaimed items are donated to charity at the end of each season.

Is there swimming? There will be a swim test the first day of camp and weather permitting campers go for a lunchtime swim to cool off!

What is the Youth Sailing Guest program? The Youth Sailing Guest program provides an opportunity for non-member children to participate in the youth sailing activities of the Lauderdale Yacht Club. The Youth Sailing Guest is for children enrolled in high school or younger who must be introduced to the program by a Member in good standing and approved by the Sailing Director. A completed registration form, waiver or liability signed by the Youth Sailing Guest and his or her parents if a minor, a signed code of conduct are required before beginning participation. The Youth Sailing Guest and their family will agree to follow the Club’s House Rules and the guidelines of the program.

How do I become a regular member? Please contact LYC Membership and Communications at (954)527-2211 or email Membership Director, Shivani Patel, at [email protected]

We’re looking forward to teaching your child the life lessons of sailing and seamanship! If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.

The 180-foot Shenandoah of Sark is one of the world’s best preserved classic topsail schooners. Built by New York shipyard Townsend and Downey in 1902, it has survived two world wars, circumnavigated the world three times, and is still revered 122 years after its delivery.

The sailing yacht’s design was heavily inspired by Meteor III , which was under construction at the same shipyard for Kaiser Wilhelm II. Shenandoah began life as a three-masted topsail schooner, though the topsails were removed during subsequent refits and rebuilds.

In 1972, Ballpoint pen magnate, Baron Marcel Bich, rescued the yacht from the French authorities, who had left it to rot for a decade following an unpaid tax scandal. Bich oversaw the boat’s first major restoration, returned her name to Shenandoah , and made her available for charter for the first time.

Modifications over the decades have included the installation of engines—at first gas engines under the ownership of Sir John Esplen at the end of World War One, and later two diesel Lugger engines of 500 hp each, which give the yacht a top speed of 12 knots.

Traveling under sail remains what Shenandoah does best. It was built as a global cruising yacht, though its ability to excel in stiff winds and whitecaps has led to success on the competitive regatta circuit. “When we’ve got flat seas and strong wind, this boat really lifts her skirts,” Captain Russell Potter, who first joined Shenandoah as a deckhand straight out of school in 2002, tells Robb Report .

When Covid hit in 2019, the current owners spent three months aboard with their dogs in Croatia and Greece. After a 24-year tenure, they are looking for the next custodian to take on the reigns of this majestic old lady.

Here are 9 things you didn’t know about one of the world’s most beloved classic sailing yachts.

The Back Story

sailing yacht club

Built in 1902 at Townsend and Downey shipyard in New York, Shenandoah was conceived as a fast, long-distance sailing yacht for the American investment banker Gibson Fahnestock, who planned to tour Europe in his retirement. Since then, the boat has passed through many owners (including Sir John Esplen), sailed under many names (including Lasca II ), and had numerous celebrity encounters, including a Mediterranean sail with Caroline Kennedy, daughter of JFK. It finally came to be called Shenandoah of Sark when one of its owners went to rename it, Shenandoah was taken. The “of Sark” part refers to an island in the U.K.’s Channel Islands.

What’s in a Name?

Shenandoah (a phrase derivied from Native American languages meaning ‘beautiful daughter of the stars’) is named after the Native American tribe that lived in the Shenandoah Valley in the Blue Ridge Mountains of northern Virginia. The name is represented by the carved wooden bust of a Native American woman located under the yacht’s bowsprit

Theodore Ferris

Shenandoah is the only yacht to be designed by American naval architect and engineer Theodore Ferris. He is best known for his “Ferris Designs”—the 3,500-deadweight-ton wooden steamships that were built and used by the United States’s Emergency Fleet Corporation during the First World War. Despite his success with Shenandoah , he went on to specialize in merchant vessels, both freight and passenger.

Authentic Interior

The yacht has undergone two significant refits over the years. The first two-year restoration was carried out at New Zealand shipyard McMullen & Wing in 1996. The second, in 2009, included a new interior penned by Terence Disdale, though it remained sympathetic to the original design by Italian designer and architect, Gae Aulenti. The yacht sleeps eight guests in four cabins. This includes the master, which has an office, sleeping quarters for a child, and a bookcase with a secret passageway to the navigation station and the captain’s quarters.

The current owner—a professional musician—adores all things classical, including music, and has fitted a Steinway baby grand piano in the main salon. Many evenings of live concerts are enjoyed on board, though it’s not the only musical connection. Rod Stewart strutted on Shenandoah ’s teak decks in the music video for his 1983 hit “What Am I Gonna Do (I’m So In Love With You”.

Haute Cuisine

The yacht may be vintage, but the food is thoroughly modern. Chef Shay van der Kraan scooped the Heart and Sole award at the MYBA Chef’s Competition in 2022 (sponsored by Robb Report ). Despite having a self-leveling three-piece dining table, the formal dining area is rarely used. Instead, the owners eat in the shade of the cockpit. The cockpit base and brass fittings are original, but the former enclosed glass hardtop was replaced in 2009 with a canvas roof and wind-down windows.

Regatta Glory

The Voile de Saint-Tropez in 2022 was the first time Captain Potter had the chance to “dig out Shenandoah ’s spinnaker and put together a professional race team.” The effort was worth it, as the yacht claimed the 2022 Rolex Trophy, its first ever regatta win. Shenandoah has raced in Turkey, Israel, Greece and Croatia, as well as taking part in the 2001 America’s Cup Jubilee Regatta. Bich also used the yacht as a mothership to his 1974 and 1977 America’s Cup challenges. In race mode, the crew increases from 12 to 22, and the sails are hoisted in a quick 20 minutes.

Labor of Love

Maintaining the yacht’s exterior wood is a labor of love, with one coat of varnish taking two months to complete. “As soon as we finish, we start the next coat, and that’s how it continues,” says Potter. The carved fish heads on the cap rails were added during the 1996 refit, but it was Bich who changed the masts back to wood from aluminum. He also re-rigged the yacht to the original 1902 dimensions, when it had yards (horizontal spars) on the foremast. The wooden helm is another original feature.

The Atlantide Expedition

Shenandoah has sailed around the world several times, but it was also one of the first yachts used for scientific research. After World War One, then-owner Viggo Jarl donated the yacht to Copenhagen University for a 10-month oceanographic expedition along the African west coast. It became known as the Atlantide expedition. The Zoologist Francis C. Fraser, who later became director of the British Museum (Natural History), joined the expedition. It pushed forward scientific understanding of the oceanography and marine life along that coast.

Melvin, Findlay and Burnham head the National Sailing Hall of Fame’s Class of 2024

NEWPORT, Rhode Island (AP) — Pete Melvin, who helped design breakthrough boats for the America’s Cup as well as the Nacra 17 used in the Olympics, and Conn Findlay, who won Olympic medals in sailing and rowing, head the list of 12 inductees in the National Sailing Hall of Fame’s Class of 2024.

As part of the firm M&M, Melvin helped design the giant trimaran that tech tycoon Larry Ellison’s BMW Oracle Racing used to win the 2010 America’s Cup in a one-off regatta against Alinghi of Switzerland’s giant catamaran. M&M also drafted the design rules for the 72-foot catamarans used in the 2013 America’s Cup, which ushered in foiling in sailing’s marquee regatta.

M&M designed the Nacra 17 catamaran that debuted in the 2016 Olympics. For the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo, the Nacra 17 added foils. Melvin sailed in the 1988 Olympics and has won numerous national and world titles.

Findlay won a total of four Olympic medals, including a bronze medal with Dennis Conner in the Tempest class in 1976. In rowing, he won two golds and one bronze in coxed pairs. He sailed in the America’s Cup three times, including with winning skipper Ted Turner aboard Courageous in 1977.

Also entering the hall is Kevin Burnham, who won a silver medal in the 470 class in the 1992 Olympics with Morgan Reeser and then won gold with Paul Foerster in 2004.

In one of the most memorable races in Olympic history, Foerster and Burnham aggressively match-raced the British boat to the back of the fleet and stayed ahead the entire race to win the gold medal. At the finish line, Burnham, then 47, waved to race officials, let out a whoop and then did a backflip into the Saronic Gulf off Athens, barefoot and still wearing his sunglasses. Burnham died in 2020.

The induction will be Oct. 4-5 at the Chicago Yacht Club.

Among the other inductees are Jan C. O’Malley, a three-time US Sailing Yachtswoman of the Year and the first winner of the IYRU Women’s World Sailing Championship; Charles Ulmer, a national champion and race winner throughout the 1970s and 80s; and Richard Tillman, the 1965 Sailor of the Year who held national, North American and world titles in the Snipe, Finn, Laser, Sunfish and Windsurfing classes.

Also going into the hall are Franklin Wood; Allegra Mertz; brothers Eric Hall and Ben Hall; Gary Mull; and Carl Alberg.

Royal Cape Yacht Club students to sail with Italian Navy instructors on educational voyage

C ape Town - Aspiring young sailors from Khayelitsha, Masiphumelele and the Cape Flats are embarking on a 5-day voyage aboard Nave Italia, the world’s largest active “brig” ship, to receive training from Italian Navy instructors.

The Royal Cape Yacht Club (RCYC) Sailing Academy students, accompanied by RCYC Academy manager Jennifer Burger, are expected to set sail today until June 30. The group will sail from Gaeta, a picturesque coastal city in central Italy, to Civitavecchia, Italy’s largest cruise port terminal.

Among the enthusiastic group is Wanda Rala Rala, a 23-year-old who started his sailing journey in 2019.

Rala Rala’s inspiration to be at sea came from a simple yet profound curiosity: the thrill of experiencing something entirely new.

“I had never been on a boat or sailed before. The excitement of trying something completely different made me eager to start,” he said.

For 16-year-old Nomthamsanqa Mlaba, the youngest student in the group and a Grade 11 learner at Lawhill Maritime Centre in Simon’s Town, the journey is “beyond exciting”.

“I am originally from Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, and I can’t wait to explore the stunning coastline, indulge in delicious food, and make unforgettable memories with all my fellow students,” she said.

Yassmeen Mbobo, 22, said: “It all started when I entered the mentorship programme in 2022, where I had a mentor. I started sailing last year, that’s when I joined the academy. I’m super excited about Italy. I want to learn about Italian culture, food and the language. I also want to acquire more knowledge in sailing and better my skills.”

The students, including Nesia Khonza, Sesona Ntsaluba, Ali Bester, Akhona Matafeni, Yonela Temela, Sikelela Mente, Salman Bester, and Lukhanyo Gqibinyanga, will face several firsts – flying and travelling overseas.

The journey has been organised by the Tender to Nave Italia Foundation and is funded by Pirelli Tyre South Africa.

It will also test their resilience and teamwork as they tackle various maritime challenges, such as climbing the 61m mast. The experience aims to enhance their seamanship and sailing skills under the mentorship of experienced navy instructors.
