Learn About Leonard DiCaprio's Yacht: Topaz

When you think about Leonardo DiCaprio, images of an eco-conscious crusader who is out to improve the health of the planet may first emerge. Recent rumors that Leo plans to attend the 2018 World Cup events in Brazil aboard a yacht seem a bit contradictory because of the pollution that these floating luxury hotels churn into the air and water.

While some have criticized him for indulging in a bit of heaven at the expense of the planet, if he wasn't doing it, somebody else would be. At least he's making an attempt to help the situation when he can. All of that aside, we were curious to find out more about Leonardo DiCaprio's Yacht, and here is what we discovered.

Leo doesn't own the yacht

DiCaprio hasn't actually purchased a yacht. Instead, he rented it from owner, Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Mansour is a billionaire politician who is the current prime minister of the United Arab Emirates.

The mega yacht was custom built according to his grand and luxurious specifications and named the Topaz. Until recently, the interior of the yacht has remained a well-guarded secret. We've learned some juicy tidbits that we're happy to share.

Specifications of the Topaz

The super yacht measures a total of 453 feet in length with a cost of more than $200 million in USD to build and an estimated value of $678 million. This isn't the biggest yacht that Mr. DiCaprio has chartered, but it's likely to be one of the most luxurious.

The yacht is powered by four M90 diesel engines which generate approximately 48,000 horse power. The ship made its maiden launch in 2012 and according to sources, DiCaprio also rented it in 2014 just 2 years into its service run.

The Topaz is rumored to be one of the most extravagant yachts in the world . It offers smooth sailing with the installation of zero speed stabilizers. It comes fully outfitted with lifts that ferry guests comfortably among the eight deck levels to the host of amenities that are scattered throughout the massive vessel.

It is decked out in full luxury and comfort with a cinema, two hot tubs, air conditioning throughout, three swimming pools, a fitness hall, underwater lights, an ample sized conference room and a well hidden interior design that is left up to our imaginations.

Leo won't be making the trip alone. We've learned that he has a list of guests that will accompany him on thee yacht as he enjoys the football tournament in Brazil.

There were 21 of his friends, all of millionaire status mind you, invited to enjoy the amenities. It's been reported that DiCaprio and his pals hopped a jet and flew to Rio de Janeiro to arrive one day prior to kick off of the Brazil World cup.

The controversy the rental has stirred

While some are happy that Leo had a nice luxury vacation , others are upset about the seeming nose thumb to environmentalists who think his actions are careless.

There has been a degree of judgment and sentiments of disappointment to outright damnation sent his way. Activists point out that Leo's private jet that made thee 8000 mile trip left a hefty carbon footprint. This is besides the emissions put out from the luxury mega yacht. They're citing his actions as not being environmentally responsible.

Why the uproar?

The backlash has come after the fact that DiCaprio made a plea to viewers to work with one another to help fight climate change when he accepted his first ever Oscar award. DiCaprio's involvement in Hollywood environmentalism can't be denied.

He dedicates time to fly here and there to pick up awards for his contributions to help clean up the environment, but when he flies to and fro, his carbon footprint grows.

There has been a volley of insults and comments disapproving of Leo's actions, but isn't this how Hollywood environmentalism works? It's kinda tough to get to Brazil without flying or chartering a boat to take you there.

It's a drama that has been ongoing since Leo's plans were first revealed but it seems that he could at least score a few points for encouraging us all to make some kind of effort.

It's not easy being the center of attention and there are times when best intentions draw a backlash of negativism, despite the fact that most of us rely on some type of carbon emitting transportation resources.

I Salute Leonardo DiCaprio and His Massive Yacht

The man is having the summer holiday of our dreams

There are two things about Leonardo DiCaprio that I know will always be true: 1/ He’s a man of leisure, and 2/ He's a man of luxury. When DiCaprio not starring in a blockbuster, or dating a young model, the 48-year-old actor can often be found unwinding in a wildly glamorous manner.

This week, he did exactly that, while cruising around the Amalfi coast in his private yacht. DiCaprio invited his dad, stepmum, and niece along for the ride. Some may find that excessive! They might wonder, Why charter a big-ass boat for just four people? Wouldn’t a smaller ship be easier to manage? I think the answer is pretty simple: Because it's fun! And Leonardo DiCaprio has yacht money! I’d do the same. Wouldn’t you?

The actor's upcoming movie is based on David Grann’s popular nonfiction book, Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI . DiCaprio stars in the project alongside Robert DeNiro, Jesse Plemons, Brendan Fraser, John Lithgow, and Lily Gladstone. The crime drama follows a series of murders that affect the indigenous Osage Nation after oil is found on their land. When more and more people go missing, the FBI swoops in to investigate.

Killers of the Flower Moon will premiere in theatres on 2 October. That gives good ol’ Leo at least a few more months to relax before hopping back into movie-star mode. I, for one, can’t wait to see what he does next.

Leonardo DiCaprio is living a pretty amazing life. The 48-year-old actor, who has been spotted having a lot of fun with models as of late, was seen having a blast with a few of his family members on the Amalfi Coast on Sunday, June 11. Alongside his niece Normandie , dad George , and stepmother Peggy , Leonardo soaked in some sun rays while wearing nothing but a small light blue bathing suit. Then, as you can see in the photos obtained by TMZ , when things got too hot, he took a jump off a beautiful yacht to cool down in the ocean.

Leonardo and his family have been enjoying sleeping and relaxing on the yacht, but they also took a bit of an adventure off the boat this weekend, when they explored the Blue Grotto sea caves in Capri. Like we said, Leonardo and his family are having quite a time together in Italy.

In fact, Leonardo’s been having quite the summer yachting all over the place. He recently went from the Cannes Film Festival straight to vacation mode at the end of May, when he was spotted on a big boat with a few of his buddies, including Tobey Maguire . 22-year-old model Meghan Roche also spent a night with him on the yacht. And let’s not forget his recent reunion with rumored love interest Gigi Hadid . It was during a big dinner party, which also included his dad, stepmom and a few others, so it’s not clear whether there was any PDA, but it was nice to see them together again. And then, they were seen arriving at the same hotel — in separate cars — the next night, so Leo is definitely living it up this summer.

Leonardo DiCaprio Jumps Off Yacht While Vacationing with Tobey Maguire in Saint-Tropez

The longtime friends have been enjoying a sun-soaked summer getaway to the South of France

Leonardo DiCaprio is making a splash on his summer vacation.

The actor and his longtime friend Tobey Maguire were spotted enjoying their time on a yacht in Saint-Tropez on Thursday. Dicaprio even jumped off the deck into the Mediterranean.

The Oscar winner, 48, was seen shirtless, sporting blue board shorts and a silver pendant necklace as he took the plunge.

Meanwhile, Maguire, 48, joined him on the sizable boat, also going shirtless and soaking up some sun. The Spider-Man actor wore a similar bathing suit, topping if off with a baseball cap and a pair of sunglasses. 

 The pair were also seen this week enjoying time offshore near the celeb-favorite hangout,  Club 55 , which DiCaprio has visited in the past. Jerry Seinfeld and his wife Jessica also visited in late June aboard a yacht.

The yachting adventure comes about a month after DiCaprio and his The Great Gatsby co-star were spotted leaving Hôtel Costes in Paris in late June. They were also photographed going to Hotel Plaza Athénée , where they attended an event with LeBron James.

Speaking about their friendship, Maguire told PEOPLE in 2013, "[Leo and I] are like any other buddies. There's a lot of laughing and chatting between us. We enjoy doing a lot of things we have in common, like basketball. We like to play and talk about basketball."

As to what brings them together, the actor added at the time: "Leo and I have a lot of trust and respect for each other. We have a close friendship, and I definitely have an affection for Leo."

DiCaprio isn’t the only one getting adventurous on the water On Thursday, Brooklyn Beckham was spotted riding aboar a superyacht in the same spot with his wife Nicola Peltz . The internet chef and photographer showed off his tattoos as he jumped shirtless off the deck of the couple’s boat.

Leonardo DiCaprio continues to be one of the most eligible bachelors in Hollywood, spending time on a luxury yacht surrounded by a ton of hot women in bikinis.

A shirtless Leo was spotted in St. Barts Monday while getting some serious vitamin D and chatting it up with multiple models on board before taking a dip and then laying in the sun.

Unclear who all of Leo's female friends are ... but one of the bikini-babes was Madison Headrick , Leo's pal Joe Nahmad 's fiancee.

Of course, Leo recently ended his relationship with Camila Morrone , after several years together.

He's been linked to several others since the split, including Gigi Hadid and more recently has reportedly been spending time with 23-year-old actress Victoria Lamas .

Clearly, he's not ready to settle down again any time soon.

Leonardo DiCaprio and his model pal Neelam Gill were seen traipsing around St. Tropez during a lavish getaway with friends on Monday.

DiCaprio, 48, and Gill, 28, were photographed heading towards the same luxury yacht docked in the coastal town on the French Riviera.

They were also joined by the “Wolf of Wall Street” star’s bestie Tobey Maguire and another mystery woman.

An insider tells Page Six that DiCaprio has been prioritizing his time with loved ones this summer.

“He has been spending time with friends and family,” the source says.

Gill looked posh in Versace sunglasses, a leopard-print sheer gown and bright green Gucci sandals ( $660 ) that coordinated perfectly with her oversized shoulder bag. She also toted the iconic Lady Dior purse, which retails for $6,500 , in a beautiful shade of red.

While the British Punjabi model was peacocking in a stand-out ensemble of colors and patterns, DiCaprio, as usual, dressed casually and plainly.

The Oscar winner stayed under the radar in a baseball hat emblazoned with a Jean-Michel Basquiat crown, a light gray T-shirt, cargo shorts and black flip-flops.

Meanwhile, Maguire, 48, took a page out of DiCaprio’s fashion playbook, opting for a simple outfit comprised of dark swim trunks, a black tee and a matching hat.

As for the mystery lady joining the trio, she wore a playful strapless top and jean short-shorts, opting to go barefoot.

Gill and DiCaprio sparked unfounded dating rumors in May when they were seen dining at posh London eatery Chiltern Firehouse with the Hollywood star’s mom, Irmelin Indenbirken.

The family gathering came just days after they were spotted leaving Hotel Martinez in Cannes, France. One month later, the two were joined by Maguire for a relaxed meal at Paris’ Loulou on Rue de Rivoli.

However, a source previously told Page Six that DiCaprio and the Vogue beauty are not dating and just friends.

DiCaprio’s many outings with Gill continue despite his alleged relationship with Gigi Hadid.

He and the “Next in Fashion” host, 28, have been spurring romance speculation since they showed PDA during Paris Fashion Week in September 2022.

Since then, they have routinely been sighted together all around the world – most recently, in the Hamptons earlier this month.

While a witness told Page Six that there is definitely “a vibe” between Hadid and DiCaprio, another source claimed they just roll in the same social circles.

DiCaprio’s rep did not immediately respond to Page Six’s request for comment.

After throwing a wild 80’s themed bash on the world’s fifth largest superyacht in April, it has been reported that Leonardo DiCaprio once again stepped on board the 147m/482’ TOPAZ to celebrate the 2014 World Cup in true Brazilian party style.

Sporting a brightly coloured Brazil scarf, DiCaprio was seen enjoying the action unfold amongst the stands of football fans during the 2014 World Cup ’s opening game between Brazil and Croatia last Thursday. He was then seen heading back to marina in Rio where superyacht TOPAZ is berthed, where he and around 20 of his friends stepped on board to relax and party late into the night.

According to the Daily Mail, it is thought that the Hollywood actor has again chartered the yacht for the famous football tournament with permission from her Owner, Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, deputy prime minister of the United Arab Emitates and owner of Manchester City FC. Since her launch from Lürssen in 2012, she has very occasionally been made available for rent to select clients and it seems that DiCaprio has taken a particular liking the yacht, although it is easy to see why.

TOPAZ’s sheer size allows for an impressive offering of amenities on board that include two heli-pads, two swimming pools and a cinema.  Apart from her highly luxurious accommodation and experienced crew of 20, she is a perfect example of how a luxury charter yacht can be the perfect way to enjoy events around the world in comfort and privacy.

If there is an acting maverick with a great range, it is Leonardo DiCaprio . His contribution to cinema is inexplicable. The eco-conscious crusader has a yacht named Topaz irrespective of the pollution it creates in water and air as well. Not only Topaz, he has been making great utility of another yacht Vava II vessel for his extravagant holidays with women and close friends. This topic is a bit controversial to his image of someone who is dedicated to the improvement of the health of the planet.

The first thing is that Leonardo DiCaprio does not own Topaz. The actual owner of Topaz is Sheikh Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who is a billionaire politician of the United Arab Emirates. Topaz is amongst one of the biggest superyachts that measure 453 feet in length. It took around $200 million to build this luxurious piece of heaven. The craft launched back in 2012 and gets power from four M90 engines operating on diesel. This generates approximately 48,000 horsepower. As per sources, Leonardo rented it for the first time in 2014, two years into the launch.

The extravagant yacht offers smooth sailing with the installation of a speed stabilizer. It has eight deck levels to accommodate its hosts and guests throughout the vessel. The luxurious lifestyle of this vessel contains a cinema hall, two hot tubs, three swimming pools, underwater lights, air conditioning throughout, a fitness hall, and a conference room.

The Vava II vessel is again a product of 2012 engineering by Devonport in the United Kingdom. A Hampshire-based company RWD and Remi Tessier conceived the designs of the ship. It can carry 523,000 liters and 96,000 liters of fuel and water, respectively on board. The ship has 2 MTU engines which provides it amazing speed ranging from 15.0 kn to 19.0 kn. It ranks 84th on the list of the superyachts.

Leonardo DiCaprio helps save man who fell overboard in the Caribbean

Leonardo DiCaprio got to play a real-life hero to a man who fell off a yacht in the Caribbean and had to tread water for hours. The Oscar-winning actor, his girlfriend and their friends were on a luxury vessel last week when an emergency call went out asking for help looking for the man, Britain's The Sun newspaper reported .

The vessel carrying DiCaprio and his crew was near the island of St. Bart's, and the man fell overboard near the neighboring island of St. Martin, according to the Sun. "The captain of his ship sent out a panicked emergency message and Leonardo and his team agreed to look for the poor guy," a source told the newspaper.

The man was found near Saba island, south of St. Martin, the Sun reported. He was severely dehydrated and had been treading water for 11 hours, the source told the newspaper.

"I should have died," the man reportedly said after he was rescued. The luxury vessel's crew gave him food and dry clothes before handing him off to authorities.

Over the weekend, DiCaprio attended the Golden Globe Awards , where he was nominated for best actor in a musical or comedy film for his performance in "Once Upon a Time...in Hollywood." Taron Egerton won the award for his portrayal of Elton John in "Rocketman."

The rumored couple reportedly met during the premiere for Killers of the Flower Moon at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival in May. They were first linked romantically when someone saw them on an ice cream date in Los Angeles, according to Page Six . An eye witness observing them stated there was a “vibe” because of the “way they were talking to each other, you could feel the energy.”

On September 6, they were seen dancing in Ibiza, Spain. A source said DiCaprio calls Ceretti his “girlfriend.”

“Vittoria is a beautiful girl, but Leonardo is of course surrounded by many beautiful girls most of the time,” an insider told The Daily Mail . “But he adores her and she him, they have been spending a lot of time together this summer, traveling around on romantic trips.”

“They added, It has obviously led to much chatter within his circle that Leo is ready to hang up his lothario ways. There have been many women pictured with him, partying with him, but what he has with Vittoria is much more serious.”

DiCaprio has introduced Ceretti to his mom.

In photos shared by Page Six , the couple were seen in Milan leaving the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana Museum on September 24 with his mom, Irmelin Indenbirken, indicating things may be getting more serious.

They spent Halloween together.

On Saturday, October, 28, the couple were photographed getting frisky at a Halloween party in Los Angeles, according to pictures published by the Daily Mail .

In November, they were reportedly “exclusive.”

In early November, an insider told Us Weekly that the Titanic star is “completely smitten” with Ceretti.

“It's going so well that Leo’s actually being exclusive,” the source continued. “Vittoria is all he thinks about.”

Referring to the pictures taken on Halloween weekend and the coziness between the two, the insider stated DiCaprio “doesn’t do that often.”

“He says she’s not only gorgeous, but super down-to-earth, and they have a ton in common,” they added. “She’s not intimidated by his fame at all—she even makes fun of it, ‘the model and the movie star.’ Leo finds it refreshing.”

As for the 20 year age gap, it “clearly isn’t an issue for him,” and DiCaprio “says [Vittoria] is an old soul.”

His friends have also been supportive and are supposedly “keeping their fingers crossed that Leo may have finally found The One.”

DiCaprio and Ceretti attended his 49th birthday party together.

DiCaprio and Ceretti had a big moment as a couple at his 49th birthday party, going to the Beverly Hills event together and putting their relationship on show there. A source told People that they were “affectionate and kissing throughout the night” during the November 11 celebration. Other guests included Jay-Z, Beyoncé, Snoop Dogg, Tobey Maguire, Taika Waititi, and Axl Rose, per People .

They enjoyed Europe in December.

After being together spotted at Art Basel the previous weekend in Miami, DiCaprio enjoyed dinner Ceretti in Paris on Friday, December 14. The couple were seen leaving La Girafe restaurant with some space between them. The Italian model wore a long black coat, while DiCaprio had on a bomber jacket and blue pants, covering his face with a baseball cap and black medical mask.

In the new year, they were in Los Angeles.

On January 12, DiCaprio and Ceretti shared a romantic dinner together at Cipriani in Beverly Hills, California. Page Six shared photos of the actor leaving the restaurant in a black baseball cap, black hoodie, jeans, and sneakers. Ceretti wore a much flashier ensemble, donning a silver sequin top and white bomber jacket lined with fur over black pants. She had her hair back in a sleek updo and wore a pair of glimmering earrings.

They were seen in the city again on Thursday, February 22, walking into a building together. DiCaprio is in the midst of shooting a new film with Paul Thomas Anderson film, the “BC Project.”

DiCaprio was dress in a pale blue T-shirt, green pants, and black sneakers. He had a black baseball cap on over his hair, which was drawn back with a band, and wore a black mask. The model was in black leggings and a matching top and a brown suede jacket. She was also carrying a black handbag and wearing sunglasses.

Sources shut down engagement rumors in March 2024.

After Ceretti wearing a silver ring on her left ring finger sparked engagement talk, multiple sources told TMZ that DiCaprio had not proposed. Ceretti has had the ring since at least September 2022, before they began dating.

Ceretti and DiCaprio did signal their relationship remains strong though, as the ring sighting came from paparazzi photos of them on a lunch date in late March.

They were seen the last weekend in the month in Santa Monica on a dinner date at Italian restaurant Giorgio Baldi. They were joined by DiCaprio's Killers of the Flower Moon costar Robert De Niro and De Niro's girlfriend Tiffany Chen. They left the restaurant in a line, with the actor covering his face with a black mask and baseball cap. He was wearing a black hoodie and pants and a pair of black-and-white sneakers. Ceretti wore a black skirt and brown top with a black jacket and bright green purse.

They were spotted together with his friends in Beverly Hills in April.

On Thursday, April 11, DiCaprio and Ceretti attended a dinner together in Hollywood with the actor's close friend Tobey Maguire and some other friends at Funke, and were later photographed walking together in Beverly Hills.

He wore a black baseball cap and mask, with a black T-shirt, jeans, and a leather jacket and black sneakers. Around his neck was a thick gold chain for added sparkle. On Saturday, May 11, the couple were seen at a Rolling Stones’ concert in Las Vegas in Allegiant Stadium's VIP section for the band's “Hackney Diamonds” tour. The model was spotted with her arm around the actor, leaning over to kiss him throughout the concert. He was dressed in black with a baseball cap, while she wore a white T-shirt and black skirt. On Instagram, Ceretti shared several photos from the weekend, including shots of her in her concert outfit in a hotel room and video clips of the stage in which Mick Jagger performs “Paint It, Black” and “Sympathy for the Devil.”

Everybody Is Hanging Out Without You on a Yacht

It’s the dead center of July, otherwise known as a logical time for a vacation for so many. Are you in Europe? I’m sensing a lot of you are, judging from Instagram and my own hang-ups. Or maybe you went to a beach somewhere closer to home. A nice lake? Did you pack a cooler of cold ones and play an exhilarating game of chicken with the sun? I’m sure it was diverting, or it will be diverting, or it is right now as we speak. Congratulations on taking time for yourself! 

It’s just—well, hm. It’s not a yacht in the Mediterranean, is it? You’re not exactly floating along some horizon line, a buoyant mansion with a full staff below your feet? Every need and whim met, and a cool ocean surrounding you for when you need to feel refreshed and new? Not that your vacation has to be yacht-based! The Outer Banks coastline, Lake Michigan, and sunny California are still pretty fun. They’re just not technically a yacht.

Maybe this is a bad moment to tell you this, but I think you already sensed it anyway: Elon Musk is on a yacht . Or he was very recently. He’s taking a break from his Twitter entanglement and also from raising the small population that he’s so keen on producing to float along unperturbed in the sunny clime of Mykonos (that’s Greece!). He’s with a “mystery woman” and a bunch of other guys. 

So yeah, Musk, the richest one, is having a nice time. But that has nothing to do with you! You can still have your little vacation and relax! It’s not like Musk is the only guy on a boat. Leonardo DiCaprio and his blood brother Tobey Maguire were doing their own thing last week on the French Riviera. There are photos of both DiCaprio catching rays on a boat and the two actors Jet Skiing .

That’s probably not news to you either. DiCaprio seems to be on a yacht more than he’s off of one. It stands to reason that at any time of year, no matter what’s going on for him or in the world more generally, DiCaprio is on a yacht, about to get on a yacht, or getting his land legs back having just disembarked from a yacht—and Maguire is often right there with him. 

So okay, DiCaprio, Maguire, and Musk are having really good vacations, and that’s great. We’re happy for them! I just think I need a little distance between their vacations and my own this summer. Maybe we’re looking at all the wrong things in all the wrong places. There have to be more paparazzi photos around here somewhere showing stars being more relatable. 

Ah, here we go . Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson are sharing a paddleboard in the Adriatic. Instead of springing for two vehicles, they’ve gone with one. It doesn’t even require fuel. Just two boys sitting crisscross applesauce on a simple board and taking it all in. 

This is the people’s yacht. A more environmentally friendly flotilla. The outing has the makings of a buddy comedy I would probably pay money to see in a theater sometime in the middle of August, when it’s worth it just for the air conditioning.

As Harrelson told Ellen DeGeneres on her show recently, he was in the South of France at Bono ’s in 2018, and that kind of trip is an annual thing. “I take a ‘friendship tour’ pretty much every year. I thought about calling it a ‘bender where I leech off my rich friends,' but I thought, No, friendship tour! You just go, stay at their house, drink oblivious, great!” 

Now, that’s relatable. Thank God for Harrelson, really, and his humble little position in life on the back of a paddleboard. Finally I can relax. No need to stress that everyone is hanging out on a yacht without me, ha ha!

Wait, what’s this? Per the Daily Mail , Harrelson and McConaughey are in Croatia with Sacha Baron Cohen, Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich, Chris Rock, and their partners? “After initially spending a few days in the Croatian peninsula of Istria, McConaughey joined Harrelson and his friends aboard a luxury yacht on Friday.”

Actor Leonardo DiCaprio earned worldwide stardom after starring in James Cameron ’s 1997 epic drama Titanic and has become one of Hollywood’s most successful leading men. Starting his career in television before moving on to movies, he has regularly collaborated with the iconic director Martin Scorsese , including such films as Gangs of New York , The Aviator , The Departed , and The Wolf of Wall Street . DiCaprio has also starred in the Quentin Tarantino films Django Unchained and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood , as well as other notable movies like Blood Diamond , Revolutionary Road , Inception , and The Great Gatsby . Born on November 11, 1974, in Los Angeles, Leonardo Wilhelm DiCaprio is the only child of Irmelin and George DiCaprio. His parents chose the name Leonardo because when his mother was pregnant with him during a honeymoon in Florence, she felt him “kicking furiously ” while looking at a Leonardo da Vinci painting at the Uffizi Gallery.

His parents divorced when he was still a toddler. DiCaprio was mostly raised by his mother, a legal secretary born in Germany. Despite his parents’ early divorce, DiCaprio remained close to his father, a comic book artist and distributor.

With his parents’ urging, DiCaprio explored his creative side, developing an early interest in acting. “I loved imitating people” DiCaprio later told Backstage . “I loved joking around with my parents and creating different characters. I liked doing my own little homemade skits.” He didn’t like attending John Marshall High School in Los Angeles and wished to instead focus on acting auditions. He ultimately dropped out of high school but later earned his general equivalency diploma.

Early TV Roles and First Movie

DiCaprio began appearing in television commercials as a young child, though he didn’t have much success in Hollywood until he reached his early teens. For years, he had trouble landing an agent. One agent even recommended DiCaprio change his name to Lenny Williams to improve his appeal, saying his birth name was “too ethnic.” DiCaprio considered quitting acting after failing to find work despite multiple auditions, but his father encouraged him to keep at it.

By the early 1990s, the burgeoning actor began landing regular television work, with guest appearances on programs such as The New Lassie and Roseanne . He also landed a role in the dramatic comedy Parenthood, inspired by the 1989 movie of the same name, with DiCaprio playing the role originated by Joaquin Phoenix . The show proved to be short-lived, but DiCaprio was nominated for a Young Artist Award for Best Young Actor Starring in a New Television Series.

In 1991, DiCaprio took a leap forward when he was cast as a semi-regular on the family comedy Growing Pains, with Kirk Cameron and Alan Thicke. He portrayed Luke Brower, a homeless boy taken in by the family, earning another Young Artist Award nomination for the performance. DiCaprio made his film debut in the low-budget horror flick Critters 3 (1991), which earned him a third Young Artist Award nomination . He got the chance to demonstrate his talents as a serious actor two years later.

Proving he was more than a just good-looking teenager, DiCaprio starred opposite Robert De Niro in This Boy’s Life . The film delved into the difficult relationship between a young boy and his abusive stepfather in this adaptation of Tobias Wolff’s memoir. De Niro watched the auditions and said of DiCaprio’s, “I like the blond kid. He’s quite good.” In his first major movie role, the still-young actor didn’t yet know how to behave on a film set and “came with a bunch of bad habits that we got rid of,” director Michael Caton-Jones said, after which DiCaprio’s acting improved. He impressed critics, with Roger Ebert writing that “the movie is successful largely because he is a good enough actor to hold his own in his scenes with De Niro.”

DiCaprio turned heads again with his performance in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape? (1993), co-starring Johnny Depp . Director Lasse Hallstrom almost passed on DiCaprio because “I thought we needed someone who wasn’t as good-looking,” but he was impressed enough with the actor’s audition to cast him anyway. Portraying a child with mental disabilities, DiCaprio spent several days at homes for mental ill teenagers to study their mannerisms and incorporate them into his performance, according to Leonardo DiCaprio: The Biography by Douglas Wight. DiCaprio awed critics and film industry insiders so much so that director Martin Scorsese found it hard to believe he wasn’t actually mentally challenged, according to Wight . The performance earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

DiCaprio continued to pursue interesting and diverse film projects. He starred in the 1995 coming-of-age drama The Basketball Diaries and worked with Sharon Stone , Gene Hackman , and Russell Crowe on the western film The Quick and the Dead that same year. Sony Pictures was reluctant to hire DiCaprio for the latter film, but Stone believed in his talent enough that she paid his salary herself . The next year, DiCaprio starred as the Romeo to Claire Danes ’s Juliet in Romeo + Juliet (1996), Baz Luhrmann’s modern retelling of William Shakespeare ’s tragic love story. DiCaprio nearly passed on the project, “I didn’t want to run around in tights, swinging a sword,” but his father urged him to accept the role, according to Wight, which helped establish him as a leading Hollywood actor.

Another tragic love story helped propel DiCaprio’s career to a stratospheric level in 1997. He co-starred with Kate Winslet in James Cameron ’s Titanic, about the sinking of the titular ocean liner. In the movie, he plays Jack, a poor artist who falls for the rich and beautiful Rose (Winslet) on board. The couple faces danger not only from Rose’s fiancé (Billy Zane) but the ship itself after it strikes an iceberg. With a production budget that topped $200 million, it was the most expensive film ever made at the time.

Then 22 years old, DiCaprio turned down a role in Paul Thomas Anderson’s Boogie Nights (1997) to appear in Titanic . Winslet was so impressed with DiCaprio that she urged Cameron to cast him, even if he didn’t cast her, according to Wight. DiCaprio had hesitations about the part, and Cameron initially felt he “didn’t strike me as necessarily having the qualities I wanted for my Jack,” but after the auditions were complete, Cameron decided, “He was the guy,” according to Wight.

Titanic became both a critical and commercial smash hit. It garnered 14 Academy Award nominations and won 11, taking home the distinctive honors of Best Picture and Best Director. It was the first film to reach the billion dollar mark in international sales. The success of the film also showed that DiCaprio could command traditional leading man roles. He quickly became a world-famous celebrity with a growing following of admirers, his charm and youthful good looks landing him on People magazine’s list of the “50 Most Beautiful People” in 1997 and 1998.

Immediately after Titanic , DiCaprio hit a bit of a career slump, as The Man in the Iron Mask (1998) and The Beach (2000) proved to be disappointments both financially and artistically. However, DiCaprio quickly bounced back and demonstrated his range as an actor in two noteworthy features from 2002. He first portrayed real-life con artist Frank Abagnale Jr. in Steven Spielberg ’s Catch Me if You Can (2002), alongside Tom Hanks and Christopher Walken .

He also starred with Daniel Day-Lewis in Gangs of New York (2002), the first of many collaborations between DiCaprio and director Martin Scorsese. A pet project for the famed director, he had trouble securing financing for it until DiCaprio came aboard. The actor, himself, relished the role of an Irish street gang member because it was a departure from the boyish roles with which he was becoming associated.

DiCaprio once again worked with director Martin Scorsese on The Aviator (2004), taking on the challenge of playing one of America’s most famous businessmen: the eccentric and reclusive Howard Hughes . DiCaprio spent a year preparing for the starring role, reading books about and listening to recordings of Hughes, and conducting research about chronic obsessive-compulsive disorder, according to Wight. DiCaprio received widespread critical praise for the performance, winning his first Golden Globe and once again receiving an Academy Award nomination, this time as a leading actor. Film critic Robert Denerstein wrote that DiCaprio “captures Hughes’ brio, as well as the sadness that accompanied the gradual onset of insanity that turned Hughes into a legendary recluse.”

DiCaprio’s next Scorsese movie was 2006’s The Departed , which went on to win the Academy Award for Best Picture. A remake of the Hong Kong film Infernal Affairs (2002), DiCaprio portrayed Billy Costigan, an undercover state trooper who infiltrates the crew of Irish mob boss Frank Costello ( Jack Nicholson ), while one of Costello’s plants ( Matt Damon ) infiltrates the Massachusetts State Police. DiCaprio gained 15 pounds of muscle for the part and met with several people in Boston with actual ties to the Irish mob.

That same year, DiCaprio also appeared in the political war thriller Blood Diamond , portraying a diamond smuggler in war-torn Sierra Leone. DiCaprio spent months in South Africa preparing for the part, which involved interviewing people living in the country, studying the correct accents, and learning how to camouflage himself from South African military officers. The film received some criticism from the diamond industry, to which DiCaprio responded , “If the movie does anything, it will bring more awareness to the issue and people will be asking more questions, and the industry is going to have to have viable answers.” DiCaprio earned another Best Actor nod at the Oscars for his performance.

In 2008, DiCaprio reunited with Kate Winslet in Revolutionary Road , a tense film about a 1950s suburban couple facing a myriad of personal problems. Winslet suggested DiCaprio for the role because the two remained closed after Titanic and wanted to work together again but wanted to do so on a completely different film. DiCaprio followed that role up with the Scorsese thriller Shutter Island (2010) and Inception (2010), a Christopher Nolan –directed science fiction thriller about people who use futuristic technology to invade the dreams of others. DiCaprio agreed to a pay cut for the latter film in exchange for a percentage of the film’s gross profits, which ultimately earned him $50 million , his largest salary for a film performance to date.

DiCaprio took on another famous figure in the 2011 biopic J. Edgar . Directed by Clint Eastwood , the movie explores the life of J. Edgar Hoover , who ran the FBI for nearly five decades. To prepare for the role, DiCaprio conducted extensive research and visited many of Hoover’s haunts in Washington, D.C. “I do love playing historical figures simply because there’s so much incredibly diverse, interesting information about a character when you can research their life,” he explained to Backstage . “A lot of the stuff you’d never be able to make up as a writer.”

In 2012, DiCaprio marked his first collaboration with director Quentin Tarantino in Django Unchained , co-starring Jamie Foxx , Kerry Washington , and Christoph Waltz. Tarantino portrayed the villainous Calvin J. Candie, an 1850s-era plantation owner who forces his male slaves to fight to the death. It was a notably intense role, and during one dinner scene, DiCaprio accidentally cut his hand on a glass after smashing his fist upon the table, but he didn’t break character and the scene was used in the film. “My hand started really pouring blood all over the table,” DiCaprio said. “I’m glad Quentin kept it in.”

The following year, he re-teamed with Baz Luhrmann to play one of literature’s most intriguing characters, starring as Jay Gatsby in the 2013 adaptation of the F. Scott Fitzgerald classic The Great Gatsby .

Also in 2013, DiCaprio again joined forces with Scorsese to star in and co-produce The Wolf of Wall Street, portraying investment banker Jordan Belfort , who gained notoriety for defrauding clients while lining his own pockets in the 1990s. The film received some criticism for allegedly glorifying Belfort’s illegal actions and unethical lifestyle, but DiCaprio pushed back against these claims, saying “I hope people understand we’re not condoning this behaviour, that we’re indicting it.” DiCaprio’s portrayal of Belfort earned him a Golden Globe for Best Actor, along with Academy Award nominations for Best Actor and Best Picture. Jonah Hill , Margot Robbie , and Matthew McConaughey also starred in the film.

Despite his phenomenally successful three-decade career, fans and observers noted with surprise that DiCaprio hadn’t yet won an Academy Award. That changed when he starred in The Revenant as Hugh Glass, an 1820s frontiersman forced to endure the wilderness after being left for dead. Directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, the 2015 film was difficult to shoot due to frigid weather, and for the performance, DiCaprio ate raw bison , slept in an animal carcass, and endured freezing temperatures. The movie immediately generated major awards buzz and finally earned DiCaprio his first Academy Award in February 2016.

“Making The Revenant was about man’s relationship to the natural world, a world that we collectively felt in 2015 as the hottest year in recorded history” he said during his Oscar acceptance speech . “Climate change is real. It is happening right now. It is the most urgent threat facing our entire species, and we need to work collectively together and stop procrastinating. We need to support leaders around the world who do not speak for the big polluters, but who speak for all of humanity, for the Indigenous people of the world, for the billions and billions of underprivileged people out there who would be most affected by this.”

In 2019, DiCaprio worked with Quentin Tarantino again on the comedy-drama film Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood , which depicts a 1969 Hollywood and an alternative version of the events surrounding the notorious Charles Manson murders. Although many of the characters in the movie are based on real people, including actor Sharon Tate (portrayed by Margot Robbie ), DiCaprio portrayed the fictional Rick Dalton, a floundering actor who confides in his longtime stunt double, played by Brad Pitt . DiCaprio took a pay cut to work with Tarantino again, once again accepting profits from the film’s box-office performance, as he had with Inception . The role earned him his sixth Academy Award nomination for acting.

DiCaprio and Scorsese collaborated for a sixth time with Killers of the Flower Moon , which released in October 2023. Reuniting DiCaprio with his A Boy ’s Life co-star Robert De Niro , the film depicts a real-life series of murders on the Osage Nation Reservation in Oklahoma during the 1920s. DiCaprio portrays Ernest Burkhart, a member of the murderous conspiracy who marries Mollie Kyle (portrayed by Lily Gladstone ) to gain her trust. DiCaprio was originally cast in the heroic role of FBI agent Tom White, but during development of the film, he insisted on switching to Burkhart’s character , which led to significant script revisions.

Ultimately, Jesse Plemons took on the role of White, and the changes were seemingly worthwhile. Film critic Brian Tallerico wrote DiCaprio and De Niro, who plays Burkhart’s uncle William Hale, “fuel each other’s performances.” And what dominant performances they were. “The sublimated tension of the Hale–Ernest dynamic, embodied by two Scorsese veterans in fine form, is so clear and legible that it sometimes runs the risk of pushing everyone else to the narrative periphery,” Justin Chang of The Los Angeles Times writes .

As a Hollywood A-lister, DiCaprio has found himself in the media spotlight over his past girlfriends. His on-again, off-again relationship with supermodel Gisele Bündchen was fodder for celebrity magazines and websites from 2000 to 2005. DiCaprio then dated model Bar Refaeli for several years. In 2011, he was briefly linked to actor Blake Lively . Since then, he has reportedly dated various models, including most recently Gigi Hadid .

Leonardo DiCaprio Had A Classic One-Word Response When James Cameron Asked Him To Ad-Lib Titanic's Iconic 'King Of The World' Line

To be fair, I would have said the same thing.

In the annals of film history, few lines are as iconic as Leonardo DiCaprio ’s triumphant shout, “I’m the king of the world!” from the 1997 blockbuster Titanic . But did you know this little behind-the-scenes fact of the James Cameron epic : it was made up on the spot. Director James Cameron shed light on the behind-the-scenes story of this legendary moment, revealing DiCaprio’s classic one-word response when asked to ad-lib the now-famous (infamous to some) line.

During a candid interview with BBC Radio 1 , the Terminator director recounted the unexpected circumstances leading up to creating one of the most iconic movie quotes . Initially, the scene wasn’t scripted to include the “king of the world” proclamation. However, as filming progressed, Cameron felt the need for a more impactful expression of Jack Dawson’s euphoria upon boarding the majestic RMS Titanic . As James recalls it:

It was made up on the spot… I was in a crane basket and we were losing the light and we had tried this and we had tried that and tried this line and that line. And nothing was really working and I was literally just coming up snake eyes. And I said, ’Alright, I’ve got one for you. Just say, ‘I’m the king of the world,’ and just spread your arms out wide and just be in the moment and just love it and just celebrate it and love it.’ And [Leo] goes, ‘What?’

That single-word reaction from DiCaprio is pretty hilarious, but it gets even better. The Avatar creator continued:

[laughing] I’m giving this over the walkie-talkie, ‘What?’ I said, ‘I’m the king of the world. Just say I’m the king of the world, but you got to sell it. And he goes, ‘What?!’ [laughing] I go, ‘Just fucking sell it!’ So he gets up there…

And “sell it,” the Romeo + Juliet actor did. However, when the True Lies filmmaker tried the line himself, it didn’t come off as convincingly. Titanic garnered 14 nominations at the 70th Academy Awards , tying the record set by 1950’s All About Eve and later matched by La La Land . Throughout the night, James Cameron’s epic took home 11 Oscars. Despite the celebratory occasion, Cameron's Best Director speech became instantly polarizing . As he concluded his acceptance, he quoted the famous “king of the world” line, resulting in one of the corniest moments in Oscar history.

Fortunately, Cameron can now laugh about it, as he joked during the same BBC Radio 1 interview:

[to Leo] Here, I’ll show you how to do it! Just wait till the Oscars. [laughing]

Over 25 years have passed since Titanic premiered and James Cameron accepted his Oscar, yet the film continues to captivate audiences. Each year, we learn more about the making of the movie, which only adds to its impressive legacy. The Canadian director also addressed the infamous Titanic door debate .
