California Yacht Club Says New Clubhouse Will Take Several Years to Build, Activities Continue After Devastating Fire

A Temporary Pavilion Will Soon Serve in the Interim

By Zach Armstrong

The California Yacht Club in Marina del Rey lost nearly everything in December. One night, its two-story clubhouse was consumed by a seaside fire that incinerated an impressive collection of historical artifacts, boating trophies and other memorabilia. But the nautical community’s resilience proved itself. Various events and programs, including pickleball and a recent Super Bowl watch party, have continued on the club’s six-acre property while its members’ yachts still sit in the adjacent docks.

By June, Senior Vice President John Myers says the club hopes to give members a closer sense of normalcy with an elevated pavilion-style facility featuring a full-bar, restaurant, bathrooms and event space. This structure will serve in the interim while the club works out development plans for a new official clubhouse. Nothing short of a cumbersome process is anticipated. Once insurance provides an estimate on losses, the club can determine a design strategy while working with L.A. County and the California Coastal Commission for approvals.

An approximate timeline is hard to determine, said Myers, but will likely take several years.

The old clubhouse held a decades’ worth display of cherished relics that showed the club’s rich history. Notable items that perished in the December fire include the King of Spain Trophy which was acquired from King Alfonso XIII in 1929 and photographs of past club leaders. An internal team is salvaging items that survived the blaze, such as the California Cup, which will likely appear in the new HQ.

Fellow yacht clubs have shown strong comradery, said Myers. Many of them offered support to CYC after the winter fire; possibly leading to donations of memorabilia once official development plans for a new clubhouse are in motion. Having a membership of international travelers also proved to be a useful perk. As they travel to other clubs, they can use their connections to ask for gifts. Myers also said the club is open to starting “new traditions.”

While CYC lost some of its members, Myers says its community largely hasn’t gone anywhere and remains excited for future events. An upcoming Easter brunch, women’s paddle tennis and yoga are just some of what CYC members will be enjoying. Sailboat racing has also reconvened with the Sunset Series starting April 17 and running through Sept. 4.

California Yacht Club celebrates the beginning of sailing season in style

Just three months after a devastating fire all but destroyed their exquisite clubhouse building, the California Yacht Club celebrated the opening day of sailing season in style over the weekend. Blessed with a beautiful sunny day, members and guests were treated to a mardi-gras-inspired party, with a bountiful banquet, activities and entertainment on Saturday evening.

However, on the night of December 11 last year, at least five fire trucks and a substantial number of firefighters were dispatched to the location of the clubhouse at Marina Del Rey. The blaze was so intense that two firefighters were injured as they tried for two hours to bring it under control.

According to John Myers, Senior Vice President of the California Yacht Club , arson was soon ruled out and the cause was traced back to an electrical issue in the building’s kitchen. Originally built in 1967, most of the interior has been gutted and tragically many paintings and antique memorabilia was lost.

“Since then we’ve been slowly and painstakingly picking up the pieces, working through insurance, but also really starting to get on with what we have to do,” says Myers adding, “Fortunately, nothing besides the clubhouse was damaged, so we still have our outdoor paddle tennis and pickleball courts and we’re actively encouraging the outdoor activities this summer.”

Those who are keen sailors in Santa Monica might already know that a couple of sizable regattas have already taken place. However, this weekend is regarded as the “official” start to the season as the date marks a traditional time when the sea ice had melted sufficiently on the East Coast to allow sailing to once again take place. It is often accompanied by the use of large, loud canons at yacht clubs around the country to signify the “breaking of the ice.” Thankfully though, the only ice you’ll find here is in your gin and tonic.

california yacht club instagram

Myers explains that a temporary clubhouse will be erected on the west side of the site, where part of the parking lot is currently. The asphalt surface will have some serious wooden decking laid over the top to level everything out. “This way, we’re going to be able to enjoy stunning sunsets every single evening,” he says.

Myers himself had only been in his role at the Yacht Club for a couple of weeks when the tragic incident happened, but he firmly believes the community, along with every member, will be galvanized by the efforts to repair and replace everything.

“If I was a betting man, I think this thing will be finished in about three and a half year’s time. There’s still a long way to go, working with the county and coastal commission, plus long-term lease extension discussions,” he says. But Myers is optimistic, saying that great efforts are being made during this time to rescue and restore as much of the old building as possible before demolition begins, plus the addition of new features. “That old building didn’t even have an elevator, so that’s going to change,” he laughs.

The massive, makeshift marquee will feature a similarly-sized dining area and bar and will be used for functions and private events in much the same way as the old venue was. In addition, Myers plans to have smaller, satellite-style events as well, “On busy weekends, I’m hoping to have barbecues and taco stands and other attractions both here [in front of the clubhouse] and in the parking lot.”

The weekend’s festivities attracted a very large crowd, many of whom enjoyed the event from the comfort of their own luxury watercraft. Standing on the impressively manicured grass lawn, the burnt shell of the clubhouse is both a spectacular and sad sight, but it’s clear that the Southern California sailing community remains determined and dedicated to rebuilding, bigger and better.

CALIFORNIA YACHT CLUB

Founded originally in 1922 by yachtsmen including Charles Hathaway and Frank Garbutt, the California Yacht Club's first clubhouse was built in Wilmington, CA in Los Angeles' inner harbor (berths nos. 192 & 193), just opposite Terminal Island. Close by were the yards of renowned yacht builders Wilmington Boat Works and Fellows & Stewart (second location). In the club's inaugural year, member yachtsmen formed the first Star class fleet on the Pacific coast. Involved in all aspect of the sport, the club has encouraged a variety of pleasure boating, first in Los Angeles Harbor, and now in Santa Monica Bay.

Over the years CYC has been the club for numerous prominent yachtsmen including Merritt Adamson, Pierpont Davis, Roy E. Disney, J. Paul Getty, Samuel K. Rindge, William Stewart, James Kilroy and navigator extraodinaire, Ben Mitchell. Movie mogul Cecil B. DeMille once served as a trustee of the club and donated a gold cup for powerboat racing. Comedy film producers Al Christie and Hal Roach were both deeply involved in club activities in the twenties and thirties.

Power boating has always been a part of the club's mission along with sailing and rowing. The first CYC powerboat regatta was run in 1922 and the winner was none less than the famous Gar Wood in his Harmsworth Trophy winner Miss America. CYC's Catalina Challenge race for powerboats has been run annually since 1922.

A fire on Thanksgiving Day, 1930 severely damaged the original clubhouse although the heroic efforts of some members saved all of the trophies.

In 1932, several CYC members figured prominently in the sailing events at the Los Angeles Olympic Games. Owen Churchill, inventor of the SwimFin, won the gold medal in the Eight-Metre Class with Angelita.

Unfortunately, the club was forced to relinquish its key location in the East Basin to the Coast Guard for the war effort in 1941. A dormant period followed.

With the development of the long-awaited Marina Del Rey in the early 1960s, the club reformed in '63 and elected Fritz Overton, Commodore in 1923, as head of the "new" club. In 1966, they opened the modern clubhouse and marina facility that is their home today. The radial design of the building allows sweeping panoramic views of the marina.

The California Yacht Club is owned by the Hathaway family, owners of the Los Angeles Athletic Club. The annual "Great Catalina to Marina del Rey Rowing and Paddling Event" pays tribute to Charles Hathaway's row in 1976 from Catalina Island to the club on his 50th birthday.

The unique combination of private ownership and annually elected flag officers has worked well to establish California Yacht Club as one of the outstanding clubs in the nation.

“The Xtreme range may be very new—and the X-95 the newest of those—but Holterman is not,” CEO Robbert Holterman said in a statement . “The X-95 really is the culmination of everything we have done and everything we have learned over six decades of building exceptional yachts .”

Holterman Shipyard X-95 Yacht

Designed in collaboration with Dutch studio Bernd Weel , the widebody yacht features a sleek, all-aluminum exterior and a reliable, twin-shaft drivetrain that enables a top speed of 24 knots and a range of 1,800 nautical miles at 15 knots. It is also fitted with a modern exhaust treatment system that meets the latest IMO Tier III emission standards.

Onboard, a stunning raised pilothouse creates what Holterman describes as “acres” of exterior and interior living space. On the main deck, a huge salon leads to a forward owner’s suite with a luxurious private terrace. Below, the lower deck is outfitted with four generous guest cabins and large crew quarters.

“We believe the X-95 is something really special,” adds designer Bernd Weel. “One of the main focuses right from the start was to create a lot of exterior space for outdoor living, but at the same time maximizing interior space for a full five-cabin layout—we also really wanted to design the yacht to be optimized for potential charter, so the integration of captain and crew has been paramount in the design.”

Inside Arev, the Colorful New Hotel in St. Tropez

By Elise Taylor

Admittedly, I walked into Arev, a new hotel in St. Tropez, a little worse for the wear. The night before, I was at a wedding nearby where the reception started at 9 p.m. and didn’t stop until the sun came up. But while most of my fellow guests had taken a shuttle straight to the Nice Airport, I was here for an extra day. So there I was, bleary-eyed and hungover in a wrinkled dress—likely not the Vogue editor they expected, but the one they got.

Immediately, the staff sprung into action. An attendant brought me a cappuccino and a pastry basket, while another told me they would expedite my room to be ready for an early check-in. In the meantime, they gently suggested, perhaps I should check out the spa?

A common space at Arev St. Tropez designed by Luis Bustamante.

At a hotel like this, it’s easy to offer such personalized service. There are only 43 rooms, meaning even at full occupancy, there are under 90 guests at all times. Plus, there’s no formal check-in desk or lobby at Arev. Instead, you walk into what feels like an entryway to a house—except instead of a living room before you, there’s a restaurant and hotel bar.

Madrilenõ designer Luis Bustamante is the mastermind behind the interiors. I can best describe them as like being inside the world’s most impeccably decorated yacht: couches and chairs are covered in navy or red upholstery, whereas the ceiling is a light wood. The walls, meanwhile, are painted either royal blue or white. Stripes, in all forms, abound.

The Strand restaurant's terrace.

Although there are plenty of inside areas to enjoy, the outdoor terrace—delightfully shaded from the St. Tropez sun—is where I decide to take my coffee. There’s an olive tree there, which a waiter tells me is over 100 years old. A garden sits beyond.

It’s tranquil here this morning, but later in the afternoon, it picks up. A DJ begins playing by the pool to the delight of several guests: this in St. Tropez, a place with a world-renowned party scene, after all. At Arev, there are plenty of places to be social: their courtyard, called “Place des Oliviers,” boasts two shops, another restaurant, and a food truck, while the grounds also include a padel court. I’m in a more solitary mood, however. So I decide to go into town to do some shopping. It’s only a five-minute walk—or two-minute bike ride—away.

When I return, it’s time for dinner. The Arev team have revived the Strand Restaurant and Champagne Lounge, a legendary St. Tropez restaurant that closed a few years ago. Now, it’s located at the hotel, and it is delicious : I splurge on the Dover sole and eat most of it, even though it’s big enough for two. I wash it down with a delicious blackberry mocktail. (At this point, I’m still struggling, but in my attempts at being a semi-respectable journalist, I ask the table next to me about their alcoholic beverages. “It’s the best cocktail I’ve ever had!” The woman responds enthusiastically.)

Just then, I receive an Instagram DM from my friend who was at the wedding. “Are you at the Arev?” they ask. “Me too.”

“I’m at dinner, come say hi!” I respond.

They start typing, then stop, then start typing again. “I’m already in bed. They’re so comfy here.”

And just like that, I get my check.

My room boasts the same nautical-inspired color scheme as the social spaces in the hotel, but a little more pared back: bright colors serve as trims for a more soothing palette of whites and creams. In my bathroom are products by local company Maison St. that are made from Tropezian herbs. There’s also a small patio with chaise loungers—perfect if you want to soak up the sun in private.

A guest room at Arev boasts a nautical color scheme.

I climb into bed and my friend is right: with its French bed linens and Hungarian goose-down duvet and pillow, it feels like a cloud. With a switch, I activate my blackout shades. Sleep comes almost instantaneously.

The next morning, I wake up completely refreshed. I get a smoothie and avocado toast for breakfast, and text my friend if she’d like to join me. No response—she’s still sleeping.

Alone, I start mulling my afternoon… and how that DJ by the pool now sounds fun, actually.

Justice Clarence Thomas took more trips paid for by donor Harlan Crow, Senate panel reveals

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Dick Durbin says his committee has uncovered at least three additional trips given to Justice Clarence Thomas by GOP megadonor Harlan Crow as part of the panel’s ethics investigation into the Supreme Court.

Durbin, D-Ill., said Thursday the committee obtained information from Crow that Thomas took three trips, and at least six flights, on Crow’s private jet in 2017, 2019 and 2021. The panel also found evidence of private jet travel during trips to Indonesia and California that Thomas recently disclosed in an amendment to a 2019 financial disclosure report.

The Democratic-led Judiciary panel launched the investigation last year after several reports that Thomas had for years received undisclosed expensive gifts , including international travel, from Crow. The committee has since pushed the Supreme Court to adopt a stronger ethics code as trips by Thomas and Justice Samuel Alito came to light, along with six-figure book deals received by other justices.

The new information “makes it crystal clear that the highest court needs an enforceable code of conduct, because its members continue to choose not to meet the moment,” Durbin said in a statement.

Scott Applewhite, file)

There was no immediate comment from the court on the Senate report. In the past, Thomas has maintained that he is not required to disclose the many trips he and his wife took that were paid for the Texas megadonor because Crow and his wife Kathy are “among our dearest friends,” Thomas said in an April 2023 statement that he was advised by colleagues on the nation’s highest court and others in the federal judiciary that “this sort of personal hospitality from close personal friends, who did not have business before the Court, was not reportable.”

Thomas, 75, and his wife, Virginia, have traveled on Crow’s yacht and private jet in Indonesia as well as stayed at his private resort in New York’s Adirondack Mountains, ProPublica reported last year. ProPublica wrote that it could have cost more than $500,000 had Thomas chartered a plane and yacht himself.

Last week, Thomas said in his annual financial disclosure that Crow paid for a hotel room in Bali, Indonesia, for a single night in 2019, and food and lodging at a private club in Sonoma County, California, the same year. But he did not report the plane flights or the stay on Crow’s yacht.

In a statement released minutes after the Judiciary panel released its report, Crow’s office said he reached an agreement with the committee to provide information responsive to its requests going back seven years, “despite his serious and continued concerns about the legality and necessity of the inquiry.” The panel voted in November to authorize a subpoena for Crow as part of the probe, despite protests from all committee Republicans.

Crow, a longtime GOP donor based in Dallas, has maintained that he has never spoken with his friend about pending matters before the court.

The Judiciary panel said it will release a full report later this year. But among the details Durbin released Thursday were a 2017 trip Thomas took on Crow’s jet from St. Louis to Montana, along with a return flight from Montana to Dallas; round trip private jet travel in 2019 from Washington to Savannah, Ga., and a round trip flight on a private jet from Washington to San Jose, California, in 2021.

The committee said it also has evidence of private jet travel for the 2019 trip to Indonesia, along with documentation of the eight-day yacht excursion.

The justices adopted an ethics code in November, though Democrats say it is not strong enough because it lacks enforcement. The code treats travel, food and lodging as expenses rather than gifts, for which monetary values must be reported. Justices aren’t required to attach a value to expenses.

Starting last year, the justices also must report private plane travel that is given to them. Thomas has declined to report trips he took before those rules went into effect.

Timbaland, Swizz Beatz and Elon Musk: Verzuz is relaunching on X, but some aren’t thrilled

Nearly two years since the last Verzuz battle, R&B and hip-hop impresarios Timbaland and Swizz Beatz have signed a distribution deal to relaunch the streaming battle series on X.

The Verzuz co-founders, who maintain ownership of the platform, will stream future Verzuz events on X for free, they announced Wednesday along with X owner and Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk. The trio made the announcement during the Cannes Lions conference in France, posting several celebratory images from a yacht to mark the occasion, as well as the Juneteenth holiday .

“Life begins at the end of your comfort zone!!!” Timbaland and Swizz Beatz wrote in a joint post on X and Instagram , the latter of which is where the streaming series debuted in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Verzuz is back and 100% Black-owned again,” the pair said in the post, noting: “We will also be building new entertainment businesses on the X platform!! ... Never give up on you dreams or your company 🤲🏾 Happy Juneteenth.”

Earlier this year, Swizz Beatz and Timbaland reacquired Verzuz from their previous partner, Triller, which took over in 2021. The producers had sued the L.A. entertainment company for breach of contract, then, in 2022, settled one of several lawsuits with Triller over allegations that the company owed money to them and business partners.

The Grammy-winning music producers described their new independent distribution deal with X as a “mutually beneficial alliance.” Swizz Beatz and Timbaland are said to maintain full ownership and creative control over Verzuz, while also retaining their equity (along with the artists who participated in Verzuz). X will receive exclusive distribution rights, said the announcement, according to Variety and the Associated Press .

The company estimates it can now expand its viewership and international reach by broadcasting to an audience of more than 550 million active users, Variety said. X has has more than 300 million monthly active users.

“We are beyond thrilled to have found the best partner for Verzuz,” Swizz Beatz said in a statement. “Not only are we excited to have Verzuz on X, we’re excited to help X build the biggest entertainment company in the world,”

Swizz Beatz also thanked Musk and the X team “for believing in the Verzuz vision. We can’t wait to get to work.”

Triller and music producers Timbaland and Swizz Beatz settle lawsuit

Triller said Thursday that it settled a lawsuit filed by music artists Timbaland and Swizz Beatz. Terms were not disclosed.

Sept. 22, 2022

Calling X “the most innovative platform globally,” Timbaland said that his and Swizz Beatz’s goal had “always been to bring Verzuz to the world, which we can now do bigger than ever.”

The last Verzuz battle pitted R&B crooner Omarion against Mario on June 23, 2022. The web series launched in March 2020 with a showdown between creators Timbaland and Swizz Beatz.

Verzuz has since featured lyrical throwdowns between late rapper DMX and Snoop Dogg, Ludacris and Nelly, and has expanded beyond the hip-hop genre. Other good-natured face-offs have worked to settle feuds or team up old rivals. The battles, which began on Instagram Live and have evolved into in-person battles in front of audiences, have featured Brandy and Monica , SWV and Xscape , Jill Scott and Erykah Badu, 112 and Jagged Edge, Bobby Brown and Keith Sweat , as well as a memorable Juneteenth piano duel between Alicia Keys and John Legend.

Don Lemon leans on a door frame while looking up

Elon Musk’s X cancels partnership with Don Lemon before his new show even begins

The social media platform parted ways with Lemon after his interview with billionaire owner Elon Musk, which will be published on YouTube.

March 13, 2024

The Musk-owned tech company has been pursuing original programming on the social-media platform as of late, announcing in January that it had made content deals with former CNN anchor Don Lemon, former Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard and former Fox Sports host and sports radio personality Jim Rome. However, in March, Musk pulled the plug on “The Don Lemon Show” before it even debuted after Lemon and the mercurial billionaire butted heads during their interview.

X Chief Executive Linda Yaccarino said in a statement that “X is so proud to partner with trailblazing creators, artists, and entrepreneurs” Swizz Beatz and Timbaland.

“Our platform stands at the forefront of innovation, and Verzuz defines the essence of an innovative content experience,” Yaccarino said. “As we continue to work with the most exciting voices to bring premium content to X, there is no better fit than this series. Together we will redefine how consumers engage with their favorite entertainment, one Verzuz at a time.”

Wednesday’s announcement, however, was met with skepticism by a number of fans, who took to X as well as the comments section of the Instagram announcement to shade the parties involved for “this lame sellout energy.”

“Uhhhhhhhhhhhhh WHO’S GONNA TELL THEM???” wrote Food Network personality Sunny Anderson.

“Fire your marketing team. Announcing partnering with Elon on Juneteenth?🙄” another user wrote.

“Welp, it was fun during the pandemic. Cherish those memories, I guess🤷🏾‍♂️” added WGN reporter Glenn Marshall Jr.

“Announcing your partnership with Apartheid Baby on Juneteenth isn’t a flex,” another user wrote, “And on a boat at that 😩🤦🏾”

“Meaning, Verzuz is still Black owned but in order for Black people to watch, we all have to flock to a platform we’re being racially targeted on. I can see the racism in the comments now 🤦🏾‍♀️” another wrote.

CANNES — “Summer House: Martha’s Vineyard” star Bria Fleming was living her best life in the South of France when she found out that Bravo had put the reality show on pause after just two seasons.

“I was actually here during the [Cannes Film] Festival,” Fleming, 29, tells Page Six’s “Virtual Reali-Tea” podcast during a special taping at Spotify Beach amid the 2024 Cannes Lions fest, which convenes creators, media, marketing execs and more in the scenic seaside city.

“I was on a yacht, and everybody’s blowing me up, but I didn’t have service in the middle of the water,” she continues, recalling her Mediterranean escapades last month. “I get off and I’m, like, blackout drunk with my friends — and I get off, and I just see everyone’s like, ‘Did you see the news?’”

On May 28, Deadline broke the news that “SHMV” — a spinoff of “Summer House” that followed an all-black cast vacationing together in Massachusetts’ affluent enclave — was taking an indefinite hiatus.

Bria Fleming

“It kind of was like a slap in the face to hear that the show is on pause because it came out of nowhere,” Fleming tells us, noting that the Season 2 reunion with Andy Cohen — a first for the unscripted series — had signaled to her an upward trajectory.

“I think we were just very shocked and disappointed because we brought it. We brought it [in the] second season. Like, everybody did their part,” she says, asserting that the entire cast delivered “juicy” drama.

“It was all organic,” Fleming elaborates, reminding us that even her pet dachshund, Milo, did his part by going missing in the season finale and her German boyfriend, Simon Marco — who spent a few days filming with the crew — incited conflict by dancing in a flamingo costume.

“I had my drama,” the fashion entrepreneur adds. “I’m always in something.”

The sophomore installment of “SHMV” starred Fleming, Jasmine Ellis Cooper, Jordan Emanuel, Shanice Henderson, Summer Marie Thomas, Noelle Hughley, Nick Arrington, Amir Lancaster, Preston Mitchum and Alex Tyree.

Fleming says her closest pal among the group, Henderson, 32, was the first to alert her that a third season was not in the works this year.

“I didn’t get a heads-up until everybody texted me, and they’re like, ‘Call me when you find out.’ I think it was … my best friend, Shanice, who told me, ‘We’re done. It’s on pause.’ And I’m like, ‘What?!’” she recounts.

“Thank God I didn’t answer it on that yacht because I would have reacted way different.”

The show is not canceled, though plans for its return remain uncertain. If and when “SHMV” comes back, Fleming says she and her beau, Marco, 38 — who joined her for the Cannes Lions chat with “Virtual Reali-Tea” — would love to reprise their roles.

“My heart felt like it was [broken] to pieces because this is, like, my dream job, and I know it’s not the end, but we’re so conditioned to go back every summer. August is like, ‘OK, I gotta prepare, I gotta get my outfits and everything,’” she says. “But, of course, we would love to come back.”

With more free time this summer, Fleming reveals she is looking forward to getting breast implants — a procedure she has long wanted to pursue but could previously never fit in due to her packed schedule.

The cast of Summer House Martha's Vineyard

“I’m gonna get a boob job, just a little augmentation, because I always wanted to do it during the summer, but we would have to go back,” she says, acknowledging that she has been interested in doing so “for years.”

“[I’ve wanted breast implants] since, like, college because they droop a little,” she explains. “So I just wanted to get, like, a natural[-looking] lift. But I always had something going on. So I was like, ‘I don’t know when I’m going to have the time to do this.’”

Whether it’s starring on reality TV or going under the knife, Marco has always been supportive of Fleming’s desires.

Bria Fleming

“I’m always positive about everything,” the businessman says, emphasizing that he and his girlfriend approach life with similar levels of curiosity and optimism.

“I always try to do new things. And when something is not working, I’m always trying to find a new way to make it better. I mean, that’s just my mindset. That’s how we build everything in our lives.”

In the meantime, the couple are enjoying more moments in Cannes — their “favorite” place in the world, as it is where they met and began falling in love two years ago.

Simon Marco and Bria Fleming

“My favorite place to travel to in the whole entire world would be Cannes in the South of France,” Fleming says, while Marco chimes in to say, “Because that’s where we met.”

The former Playboy Club Bunny says she also likes Cannes for its “luxury, shopping, food and parties.”

“There’s so much life here and so much to do and freedom and yachts and just the glamorous side of life,” she gushes. “So, I love you, Cannes.”
