Hamilton Island Race Week – the ultimate on water action

By HIRW media

Entries for this year’s Hamilton Island Race Week quickly reached capacity as Australian and international boat owners raced to register for the internationally acclaimed Whitsundays sailing series.

The 39th Race Week, August 17 to 24, will unite thousands of sailors and their family and friends at the major onshore and on-water event that fosters camaraderie and fantastic competition.

Among the 170 entries is a handful of high-performance Cape 31s, a class of boat that is quickly growing in popularity in Australia. The fleet of five, from NSW, South Australia, Western Australia, and Queensland, will contest their first Australian championship on the turquoise waters off Hamilton Island.

South Australian owner and Race Week first-timer Julian Newton says: “They’re one-design but with their funky colour schemes, no boat is the same. In my mind it’s the ultimate – a big sports boat and a mini-TP52. It’s exceptionally manageable – the more wind the more stable it becomes.

“I’ve always wanted to do Hamilton Island Race Week, and in something fun without a huge budget,” Newton added. “This will be the first Cape 31 class gathering and I expect the boat to watch will be the Australian agent David Ross and his Kukukerchu crew. I’m looking forward to the street parties; I’ll definitely embrace the social side!”

Longtime regatta director Denis Thompson says the Super 40 division showcases a tough line-up, including the Cape 31s. He also points to the high-calibre TP52 division and the Pallas Capital Gold Cup frontrunner, David Doherty’s Matador, which is the TP to beat in their series.

Grant Wharington’s maxi Wild Thing 100 is the Rating Class heavyweight at 30m. Next in line is a range of proven 60-plus foot champions, including the two-time Rolex Sydney Hobart overall winner Alive (Duncan Hine) and the Oatley family’s RP 66 Wild Oats X, skippered by Mark Richards.

“This year our entry quota filled within three weeks of launching, underscoring the sailing community’s fervour for this eagerly anticipated event,” said Island CEO Pete Brulisauer. “We look forward to the return of past participants and extend a warm welcome to new challengers and spectators.”

On top of the thrilling and always colourful trade wind contest at the Southern Hemisphere’s premier offshore regatta, guests can look forward to lively Front Street activations, entertainment, and exclusive culinary experiences. Social tickets will be available for purchase via the website starting 19 June, 2024.

Hamilton Island Race Week entries are now closed and those who missed out have been waitlisted.

Racing Yachts under racing conditions

I'm interested! Tell me more.

Conditions at Hamilton Island during Race Week vary as is typical of the time of the year in August. Generally, medium trade winds perfect for sailing and racing in this island paradise. Occasionally we get stronger winds which make the racing all the more interesting as do very light winds which we also experience.

Having attended a number of sailing trips organised by Sailing Adventures, I thought I should pen you a note of thanks. Your overall organising, the great company, the food (!), and the warm hospitality are just first rate. I would also like to commend ‘Pozz’ (Brian) for his first rate seamanship that makes everyone feel so secure in all sailing conditions. I remember that while watching a movie called ‘White Squall’, which has a sad ending, I had thought ‘how difficult it would be to entrust the lives of your children to a crew and captain’ – well, I can honestly say I would have no qualms entrusting my children to a Sailing Adventures trip – but they have to be put to work! T Thanks again for great sailing memories.
Thank you for a truly great Sailing Adventures experience at Hamilton Island. The organisation of the event was excellent and the food was superb. The experience was enhanced even more by the careful way that you ensured the interaction of all the participants on their sailing adventure. I'll be back!
It has been great to have been able to participate in most of the week long group events organised by you around Hamilton Island Race Week over the past ten years. The efforts put into planning, organising and making the events enjoyable has been consistently successful. The theme of each event has been different but with an underlying objective of encouraging participants to discover the many and varied ways that individuals and business organisations can interact and learn. At the conferences, I have enjoyed the camaraderie with others with diverse interests and I have seen that almost everyone involved has had the opportunity to build relationships and gain insights into how many of the others attending were able to achieve a successful outcome for themselves or their business.
The leadership course during Hamilton Island Race Week offers the chance to improve sailing skills in racing conditions and learn from business leaders attending the well organised workshops. Provision of full catering and fully serviced cruising yachts mean participants can concentrate fully on the workshops and the sailing. An added bonus is the spectacle of world class racing yachts competing at the regatta. The top level sailing tuition and informality of the workshops have allowed me to learn new skills and develop genuine friendships.
Great sailing, great rivalry, great communion/fellowship and it was a shame to leave and come home. There is little to  add. I would like to thank all conference participants for the spread of knowledge and enlightenment. Once again I got more from the speakers and subsequent discussion than the sailing  - it was only a small margin!!! Congratulations to Pozz and Cath for continuing the traditions and even enhancing them with the new trophy (thanks Rod) and events. All participants were delighted with the smooth organisation, especially the food and drinks.
Conventional yacht racing wisdom would say that being competitive on the water and having plenty of fun afterwards are mutually exclusive at a regatta  (just ask the crews of the high performance boats at the pointy end of the fleet who are often under curfew after 8pm and tucked up in bed by 10). Sailing Adventures defies this logic by providing an extremely well managed combination of great competition afloat and a five star entertainment experience ashore, with great food, wine and most importantly, great company.
Hamo Race Week is always a great time. The sailing is fun... exhilarating, but always with the right priority given to safety, leadership and teamwork. The week also provides the opportunity to meet friends, network and have fun, particularly in the evenings which are great social occasions without being overly organised. I should add that the entire week is very well organised which  only happens because the effort the Sailing Adventurers team put into looking after us in every respect from the accommodation, sea-faring lunches, culinary delights of a night and ensuring everyone has fun.
I have attended Hamilton Island Race week several times but never had such a great experience as with CEO1/Sailing Adventures. It was superbly organised and exceptional in terms of excellent accommodation; dining and interacting each night with the whole group and of course the sailing activities to support the underlying training and personal development. I especially enjoyed mixing with such an interesting range of people who have so much to share over the period, and listening to the presentations each night and associated long discussions that followed in such a collegial setting. The leadership and team building aspects of the sailing activities proved to be insightful and very well crafted which is a credit to CEO1/Sailing Adventures. I also have built some lasting relationships from this unique environment and event and will be attending again, which is probably the best recommendation I can give CEO1/Sailing Adventures..

Yacht Boat News

Brisbane to Hamilton Island Yacht Race

Photo of YachtBoatNews

Entries have opened and the Notice of Race published for the Brisbane to Hamilton Island Yacht Race, due to start at 11am on Friday 4 August 2023.

The 530 nautical mile race, inaugurated in 2019 and organised by Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron in conjunction with Hamilton Island Yacht Club, is open to monohull and ocean-going multihulls with fully crewed and double-handed options in both categories. The race blends in nicely to allow competitors time to prepare for the Northern Queensland circuit of Race Weeks.

Last year, Matt Williams’ Cookson 12 Trouble & Strife from RQYS won the race on handicap, while Andoo Comanche (John Winning Jr) from NSW took line honours from the local favourite, Black Jack (Peter Harburg), and Hamilton Island Wild Oats (Oatley family). Andoo Comanche is proving hard to overcome since arriving back in Australia last year.

hamilton island yacht race 2024

Williams is adamant his crew will return to defend their win in 2023: “Yes, we thought we’d come back and give it another go. It’s a great race, a great initiative by Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron and Hamilton Island Yacht Club,” he said.

“It’s a good distance, providing an opportunity for a hit-out before the Sydney Hobart. It’s an excellent destination; Hamilton Island is very popular with the crew and their partners,” Williams added.

A bonus, of course, are the humpback whales and pods of dolphins that frequent the course and keep competitors enthralled.

Commodore David Redfern agreed. “Last year’s race kept viewers engrossed throughout with the 100 footers Andoo Comanche, Black Jack and Hamilton Island Wild Oats and the Botin 80, Stefan Racing chasing line honours.

The trio of 100 footers at the start - Brisbane to Hamilton Island Yacht Race - photo © Mike Middleton, RQYS

“We had a strong field for overall handicap honours, including all those mentioned above, as well as the likes of Philip Turner’s 2018 Sydney Hobart winner, Alive (from Tasmania), Wings (NSW – finished second last year and won PHS) and No Limit (NSW) among others.

The race is very much a navigators race, starting on Moreton Bay in Brisbane and finishing in Dent Passage at Hamilton Island, with only two marks after the fleet departs Moreton Bay. The fleet will be fitted with YB trackers allowing families, friends and sailing fans to follow the action throughout the race.

On the line are the current race records, both set in 2019. Karl Kwok’s MOD70, Beau Geste, created the multihull record of 1 day 2 hours 11 minutes 41. The Oatley family’s Reichel/Pugh 66, Wild Oats X, established the monohull record of 1d 10h 46m 53s. They will be hard to beat, as it was a quick, mainly downwind race.

“The Yacht Sales Co is proud to support this great event once again and we look forward to the fabulous racing and camaraderie that was on display last year,” said the company’s Marketing Manager Rachel Crook.

Early Bird entries are available until 1 June 2023, with standard entries closing on 15 July, 2023.

RQYS thanks naming rights sponsor The Yacht Sales Co and support sponsors: Robert Oatley Vineyards, Club Marine and Hamilton Island for their support of this major Queensland event.

2024 Newport Race Kicks Off On June 21

The 53rd Newport Bermuda Race is set to kick off tomorrow [June 21] from Narragansett Bay, with over 160 boats set to take part.

A spokesperson said, “The 53rd Newport Bermuda Race will kick off tomorrow, Friday June 21, with rolling starts from 2-4 p.m. off the shoreline of Fort Adams in Newport. For the first time in the Race’s 118 year history, participating boats will begin their journey to Bermuda from inside Narragansett Bay—giving spectators stunning views of the starting line.

“On land, the Newport Bermuda Race Starting Line Party will take place at Fort Adams from 12-4 p.m. The event is free and open to the public, featuring live music, food and drinks for purchase, and a poster signing and meet and greet with Cole Brauer, the first American woman to race solo around the world.

“It will take approximately two to five days for the fleet of 163 boats to reach Bermuda. Race events continue throughout the week of June 24, concluding with a Prize Giving Ceremony at the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club in Hamilton on June 29.”

“The entire Bermuda Race Organizing Committee is thrilled to bring both new and seasoned sailing fans closer to the action at Fort Adams,” said Race Chair Andrew Kallfelz.

“The ‘Thrash to the Onion Patch’ has, for years, been a staple in offshore racing and a bucket list item for many sailors. Now, our expanded kick-off festivities are forging and strengthening connections between that community, the City of Newport and State of Rhode Island, and our friends in Bermuda.”

Hamilton Island Race Week About

One of the world’s most famous yachting events, this annual event brings spectators and yachties from all around the globe to the Whitsundays for an exciting line up of on and offshore events.

Large schedule of races About

The week includes a range of events and classes, ranging from the Grand Prix class for top-class racers, to corporate, bareboat and non-spinnaker divisions.

Be part of a Hamilton Island tradition About

Hamilton Island Race Week was founded in 1983, and has been growing in popularity every year.

About Hamilton Island Race Week

Race Week was conceived by David Hutchen in 1983, after he had moved to the Whitsundays with his yacht “Banjo Paterson” to start a yacht charter business. David was able to convince the then owner and founder of Hamilton Island, Keith Williams, to agree to hosting the event as a way of generating tourism and favourable media attention to the resort.

After eight years of having Race Week in April, it was moved to August in 1992 to take advantage of more consistent and attractive weather conditions. The change in timing has seen the event grow significantly over the years becoming Australia's largest offshore yachting regatta.

'Peanuts' characters Snoopy, Woodstock on shirts for Bayview Mackinac sailboat race

hamilton island yacht race 2024

There might be an American icon hitching a ride on the backs of sailors during this year's 100th consecutive Bayview Mackinac sailboat race, which begins July 20.

To help celebrate the race, the Bayview Yacht Club is selling special T-shirts online featuring Charles M. Schulz's "Peanuts" characters — and that includes Snoopy.

Most of the shirts include the logo for the 100th race on the front and the "Peanuts" designs on the back.

The race is slightly older than the famous dog. The club created the race, which goes from Port Huron to Mackinac Island, in 1925. It's the longest continually run freshwater long-distance sailboat race. Snoopy was inspired by the Schulz family dog, Spike, which the cartoonist first illustrated in the 1930s, according to the Charles M. Schulz Museum . Snoopy and the "Peanuts" gang were first published in a comic strip in 1950.

Some of the "Peanuts" and Bayview Mackinac designs include:

  • Snoopy wearing a captain's hat and standing on an anchor.
  • Woodstock in a sailboat that's floating in Snoopy's dog bowl.
  • Woodstock sailing under the words "Peanuts Sailing Team."
  • Snoopy looking at Woodstock sailing in his dog bowl with the popular "Peanuts" phrase, "Good Grief," above them.
  • Silhouette of Sailor Snoopy

The shirts range from $27-$29. There are both adult and youth offerings. Customers are encouraged to order online by June 28 to receive shirts before the race begins.

This is also a big year for Snoopy, as it's the 50th anniversary of the Beagle Scouts. You can find anniversary gear at the "Peanuts" official store and Kohl's.

hamilton island yacht race 2024

The 53rd  Newport Bermuda Race  will kick off tomorrow, Friday, June 21, with rolling starts from 2-4 p.m. off the shoreline of Fort Adams in Newport. For the first time in the Race’s 118-year history, participating boats will begin their journey to Bermuda from inside Narragansett Bay—giving spectators stunning views of the starting line.

On land, the Newport Bermuda Race Starting Line Party will take place at Fort Adams from 12 to 4 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. It will feature live music, food and drinks for purchase, a poster signing, and a meet-and-greet with Cole Brauer, the first American woman to race solo around the world.

The Starting Line Live Show Powered by Ørsted will be broadcast worldwide on  YouTube.com/BermudaRace  starting at 2 pm, hosted by Jesse Fielding and accompanied by race record holder Ken Read from North Sails and Cole Brauer reporting from the water.

YouTube video

“The entire Bermuda Race Organizing Committee is thrilled to bring both new and seasoned sailing fans closer to the action at Fort Adams,” said Race Chair Andrew Kallfelz. “The ‘Thrash to the Onion Patch’ has, for years, been a staple in offshore racing and a bucket list item for many sailors. Now, our expanded kick-off festivities are forging and strengthening connections between that community, the City of Newport and State of Rhode Island, and our friends in Bermuda.”

The fleet of 163 boats will take approximately two to five days to reach Bermuda. Race events continue throughout the week of June 24, concluding with a Prize-Giving Ceremony at the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club in Hamilton on June 29.

What to Expect From the Weather

“The weather is setting up for a relatively benign race for the faster boats,” said sailor Peter Isler, navigator of  Pyewacket 70 . Isler pointed to a cold front approaching Newport from the north that may have an impact on the start and first 24 hours of the race.

Kent Racing  navigator Erica Lush added that the Newport Bermuda Race is all about the weather, noting that sailors face “no coastal challenges to navigate for 95% of the racecourse.” That said, Lush believes the hot, humid weather impacting Rhode Island this week will provide sailors with “a lovely thermal sea breeze” for Friday’s start off the coast of Aquidneck Island.

Crossing the Gulf Stream current weighs heavy on both sailors’ minds. “The Gulf Stream, of course, provides an array of decisions to make, and can be difficult to navigate with choppy seas and squalls over the disproportionately warm water,” Lush said, with Isler adding that “[t]he Gulf Stream crossing is always a tricky part of this race – and a unique feature compared to other big ocean races.”

What Sailors are Saying

At Wednesday night’s Goslings Crew Party hosted by Safe Harbor Newport Shipyard, sailors were in high spirits as they feted the arrival of participating boats to Newport. “It looks like it’s going to be a really fun race,” said Evan Bowen who will be sailing aboard  Masquerade . “I think that whoever can get off the coast the best [at the start] will be set up for a solid race.”

This is the first Newport Bermuda Race for the crew of  Allegiant , who just this week completed the Annapolis Bermuda Race. “We think we’re going to do really well, but it’s our first race. We are cautiously optimistic,”  Allegiant  Co-Skipper Maryline Oshea. “Our team is pumped.”

Ahead of Friday’s start, Lush sees “keeping team morale high and sailors focused” as the name of the game to success. Isler is keeping his eye on the weather and quoted the late 2002 Newport Bermuda Race-winning skipper Roy E. Disney, saying “the devil is in the details.”

How to Follow the Race

Once the sailors leave Narragansett Bay, race fans can track the boats using the  Palm Beach Motor Yachts Tracker  online or via the YB Races App. Real-time leaderboard results will be available on  bermudarace.com  along with photos, news, and more. Follow us on social media @BermudaRace as well as we share stories from the Gulf Stream and beyond.

Two boats involved in horror crash as sailor thrown overboard

Rough seas contributed to the awful incident (Picture: BNPS)

Two boats were involved in a devastating crash and a sailor was thrown overboard during a yacht race.

A man was flung from a boat as competitors battled rough seas during the Round the Island Race in the Isle of Wight today.

He then desperately clung onto his life jacket before being rescued.

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) rushed to his aid to pull him from the water despite the extreme conditions.

His condition is not yet known.

It’s thought that at least one of the boats involved capsized.

Wind speeds soared to 64mph before the shocking incident happened off Yarmouth.

The event, which sees boaters sail 50 miles around the Isle of Wight, normally attracts one of the largest fleets of any yacht race.

But the severe weather had a major impact this morning with 418 yachts retiring and just 153 finishing the race.

Elsewhere today, a British couple were thrown from a boat and seriously injured after it exploded in Majorca .

South Australian wine label magnate Peter Teakle remembered as passionate visionary after his death

ABC Rural South Australian wine label magnate Peter Teakle remembered as passionate visionary after his death

Man in all white, including a hat, kneels on a river bank.

South Australian businessman Peter Teakle has been remembered as an "entrepreneurial, fun-loving, passionate patriarch" after his unexpected death at 72.

His son, Ben, said his family was in shock after the wine-label printing magnate died in his sleep on Friday.

A man in a blue blazer and a man in a yellow jacket and white hat stand in front of a tree.

"Dad's health declined more rapidly than we expected, and he passed away quite suddenly," he said.

"We will remember him as the entrepreneurial, fun-loving, passionate patriarch of our family. In his life, he had many chapters."

Life as a businessman

Mr Teakle made his fortune printing wine labels, transforming his family's Adelaide business, Collotype Labels, into a global multi-million-dollar company.

A man in a white shirt holds printing images.

"When his grandfather, Gilbert, ran the company, it had a staff of 12.

"When Roy [Mr Teakle's father] was in charge, staff numbers were about 40 and when Dad sold the business in 2007, it had grown to over 450 staff," he said.

Journey to Port Lincoln

After sailing his yacht in the Adelaide to Port Lincoln race with his wife in 1986, Mr Teakle was so impressed with the Eyre Peninsula fishing town that he decided it would be the perfect place for his impending semi-retirement.

Mr Teakle never fully retired. In 2017, he opened a fine-dining restaurant, The Line & Label, which also has its own cellar door.

In Port Lincoln, the entrepreneur donated millions of dollars to various community initiatives, ranging from local charities to an elaborate bronze bugler memorial to honour servicemen from the region.

Special presence

Port Lincoln Mayor Diana Mislov said Mr Teakle's presence brought a "sense of gravitas" to a room.

"I found him to be the most generous man, not just with his funds but his time. He always took his time to have a chat and be genuine and caring about what was going on in people's lives," she said.

"For me, that's the honest mark of a life well-lived and a good human being. From a community perspective, he will be sorely missed.

"Everyone will relate to Peter and his emu-feathered hat … I can't speak highly enough of him."

Port Lincoln car enthusiast Hagen Zerk said he became friends with Mr Teakle after a conversation about motorsports led to him sponsoring an ambitious street car race around the town, where he drove his Ferrari.

A man in all red leans on his Ferrari and chats to a reporter.

"He trusted us to make it happen … he was someone [who] actually saw our vision and he backed us," Mr Zerk said.

"He's done it with a lot of people in this town; he has seen people's vision and makes things come to life."

Steamboat captain

His vision and influence spread to the Riverland in the 1990s when he bought a farm on the Murray River, Akuna Station, and became involved in viticulture.

"Over the next 10 years, he spent time growing award-winning grapes on his 40-hectare plot of vines. He won an IBIS award for conservation for planting hundreds of trees," Ben said.

He said his father also bought and captained an 1876 riverboat paddle-steamer, the PV Amphibious (renamed the Akuna Amphibious), during this period.

Renmark historian Jackson Wickham said Mr Teakle purchased the 124-year-old vessel in 1999.

"He had the passion and the vision," he said.

"It's not just anyone [who] can rebuild a multi-million-dollar paddleboat and make it stand out among the heritage fleet of authentic boats on the river."

He said Mr Teakle had paid for various upgrades and improvements along the Murray River to help fellow paddle-steamers.

Mr Wickham said Mr Teakle had influenced his paddle-steamer captain practices despite never meeting him.

"Peter had a knack for understanding the boat and the river and was especially good at being able to articulate that understanding to others," he said.

"Many of the ways he explained situations of boat handling or reading the river I still use to explain to others today."

A life well-lived

Ben said the "outpouring of support" and kind messages following his father's death was evidence of a life well-lived.

"Dad touched so many lives in the wine industry, the sailing community, Adelaide, Hamilton Island, and Port Lincoln, and we are so grateful for the well wishes we have received," he said.
