Boat Review: The (New) Cabo 35

Cabo Yachts has long been considered the benchmark by which other comparable-size production boats are judged. It’s good to see that a company at the top of the business doesn’t rest on its laurels and makes the effort to continually improve.

Cabo has completely redesigned and re-executed the hulls of its 35-footers – the Express and the Flybridge. Naval architect W.I.B. Crealock drew the lines of the original Cabo 35, the boat that in 1992 propelled Cabo Yachts from an upstart company with big ideas to one of the most recognized production sport-fishing boatbuilders in the world.

As good as the first Cabo 35 was, it still had its bugs. The original design sometimes delivered a hard and wet head-sea ride that meant slowing down to 18 or 20 knots in seas of 3 feet or more. To make sure the company maintained its preeminent position in the market, Cabo hired Lou Codega, considered one of the best high-speed planing-hull designers today. Codega, working in concert with the rest of the Cabo design and engineering team, has made some truly notable refinements.

Like the original Crealock design, the Cabo 35 sports very little bow flare that robs interior space. The new hull features two chines running back from the stem. One starts about 8 inches above the waterline while the other starts about 5 inches above it. The lower one functions as a normal chine, while the upper one acts as a spray rail up at the bow and carries all the way back to the transom. Company officials say the new chines allow the 35 to keep its interior space while also drying out the ride significantly.

At idle speed, there’s no discernable difference between the Crealock- and the Codega-designed hulls. At a 30-knot cruising speed, the new Cabo 35 proved very agile, while drifting caused the boat to roll comfortably with no violent snap or awkward motion. Taking a head sea, the new design carved through it more softly and with less resistance. With a much finer entry, dropping the bow with the trim tabs really smoothed out a chop better than before. In following seas, the older models also slowed down a bit when confronting the back of the next wave. The Codega model suffers less from this performance aspect. Perhaps the greatest difference between the two designs is the way the new 35 sits higher in the water. Fighting a fish, I felt the new hull actually spins better than the old one. Back in calm water, I eked out a 33.1-knot top end at 2,900 rpm with twin Cat 3208 TAs, each producing 375 hp. But perhaps more important than top speed (and there are many things more important), at a 7-knot trolling speed, the Cabo 35 hull has one of the cleanest wakes I’ve ever seen.

The Return of Cabo Yachts

Cabo Yachts is coming back.

The brand, founded in 1991 in California, was long considered a major player in the 36- to 52-foot offshore fishboat market. At Cabo’s height of operations, in 1995, it employed about 550 workers, and the brand remained strong for years, selling to Brunswick Corp. in 2006.

Then, of course, the global recession hit, taking down numerous boatbuilders with it. By 2010, Cabo production had moved to New Bern, North Carolina, where Brunswick-owned Hatteras Yachts is located. In 2013, production of the Cabo line ceased.

“Now, we feel the market conditions are right to bring back the proven Cabo line of hard-core fishing boats,” Hatteras/Cabo Yachts President and CEO Kelly Grindle stated in a press release. “Even though Cabo boats have not been produced for a few years, consumer research shows a continued strong affinity for the brand. Cabo ranks as one of the top brands for quality and reliability. We intend to build on this well-deserved reputation as we fill a growing demand in the marketplace for inboard offshore, express-style fishing boats — a niche that Cabo once owned. Cabo will provide a step up from a center console to a boat that offers greater comfort and amenities while owners pursue their passion for angling offshore.”

The first new Cabo model, scheduled to premiere at the 2019 Miami International Boat Show, will be the Cabo 41. It will have a length overall of 42 feet 10 inches, with standard twin 626-horsepower Volvo Penta D11s along with optional 670- and 725-horsepower engines or Cummins QSM11s.

Other options will include the Seakeeper 6 stabilization system, and custom towers and outriggers built by Hatteras partner Carolina Custom Towers.

Design features on the Cabo 41 will include mezzanine seating above the cockpit, an open helm deck, a queen-berth stateroom and a dining settee that converts to a second berth.

“The Cabo 41 is aimed at the sportfishing enthusiast who wants a better-performing, higher-quality, more comfortable offshore fishing platform,” Grindle stated in the press release. “This model is only the beginning. The new Cabo line we have in development will be made up of easy-to-own, durable fishing machines that give anglers the confidence to fish longer, and the satisfaction of catching more fish while staying dry and comfortable, even in rough conditions.”

More specs on the new Cabo 41: displacement is 31,000 pounds, with a 550-gallon fuel capacity and 95 gallons of water.

What Makes the CABO 41 Sportfishing Yacht So Special?

CABO 41 is manufactured by Hatteras/Cabo Yachts of New Bern, North Carolina. The design includes a broad range of standard and optional features to delight sportfishing enthusiasts.

Propulsion Features:

The CABO 41 Sportfish Yacht comes standard with Twin 626-horsepower Volvo Penta D11 engines. You may also select from among the Volvo 670 and 725-horsepower engines or a pair of Cummins QSM11s. According to the Volvo Penta engineers, the CABO 41 equipped with their 725-hp engines represents the “industry-leading power-to-weight ratio and best-in-class torque.” The result is faster acceleration while maneuvering easily at low RPMs. 

The CABO 41 Sportfish Yacht is capable of motoring from zero-to-30 mph in about 12 seconds and can maintain a top speed of over 40 mph at 2,400 rpm.

Express Series

Step aboard a Cabo and it’s immediately apparent that Cabo boats are made by fishermen for fishermen. First and foremost, the cockpits offer more square footage, and at times they’re bigger than the cockpits found in much larger boats and Cabo includes a long list of standard fishing amenities that are often options on comparable models.

With the Express series, careful thought goes into the placement of every element in the cockpit, especially essentials such as bait tanks, livewells, bait prep centers, and tackle storage. Insulated fish boxes are molded into the sole and equipped with in-line macerators, full-length piano hinges, and doors that seal tightly against rubber gaskets. If owners choose, the boxes can also be equipped with optional icemakers and/or refrigeration plates.

The Cabo 31 is a premium offshore express whose precise handling, exceptional range, and superb engineering set her apart from just about everything boat in her class in the mid-1990s.

The Cabo 32 Express is a luxury-class fishing machine whose mega-wide 13’3″ beam results in more cockpit, helm deck, and interior space than any boat in her class, allowing for better time offshore.

The Cabo 35 Express is a top-level sportfishing machine whose impeccable detailing, superior engineering and rugged construction made her one of the top-selling boats in her class for several years.

The Cabo 38 Express is an entirely new hull from the ground up. Designed by Michael Peters Yacht Design, the Cabo 38 Express has precise weight distribution, which translates to a soft, dry ride.

Industry experts hail the Cabo 40 Express as the ultimate sportfisher, featuring a war chest of big-game angling equipment as well as a highly livable interior, suitable for comfortable rides.

The CABO 41 is made for the sportfishing enthusiast who desires a high-performing, comfortable offshore fishing platform with trusted quality. It is an easy-to-own, durable fishing machine.

The 44 Hardtop Express launched the next step in sportfisher design evolution for CABO Yachts, with the integration of a new hardtop – taking what was already a leader in fishability to another level.

Aside from her rakish profile, perhaps the most distinctive feature of the Cabo 45 Express is her huge bridge deck with its centerline helm, integral electronics console, and expansive lounge seating built to entertain.

The Cabo 52, the flagship of our Express fleet, meets the superior standards set by her smaller siblings, then takes them to the next level. She is built with the same precision and performance of the Cabo brand.

Without a doubt, a Cabo is more than the sum of the parts. Every piece is painstakingly evaluated to ensure that it is the best it can possibly be. Design, engineering, and maintenance are all carefully considered, examined, and double-checked.

The interior of a Cabo Flybridge speaks volumes about our company’s continued commitment to excellence. To begin with, teak is used throughout the boats, and to ensure consistency and continuity, each individual element is milled in-house and stored in a temperature and humidity-controlled environment during the construction process. The woodwork is sanded, applied with multiple coats of marine varnish, and then buffed to a beautiful satin finish.

Cabo’s first boat, the Cabo 35 Flybridge ranks among the most popular boats of her type built in recent years. Where many small flybridge boats have a tall profile, Cabo kept the height of the 35 low.
