Sunseeker and MTU go hybrid
Sunseeker will launch its first hybrid production boat in 2020
Sunseeker and MTU have announced a collaboration that will see Sunseeker’s first production hybrid launch next year.
There are no details at this point as to what the boat will look like but judging by the rendering (above) the new model will slot into the Poole yard’s Yacht range.
The news comes as Sunseeker teases its Project 8X concept, which will be revealed at the Düsseldorf Boat Show .
The integrated hybrid propulsion system comprises a pair of 12-cylinder MTU 2000 diesel engines with 1,947hp each, generators, electric propulsion modules, transmission, batteries and a control and monitoring system.

Sean Robertson, sales director at Sunseeker says: “The way owners are using their boats continues to evolve with efficiency and noise reduction now as important as on-board features and volume, which all contribute to their ultimate purchase decision.
“This latest hybrid technology will feature in a brand new model launching in 2020 and will allow owners a choice of multiple operating modes from all-electric with zero emissions through to use of the twin 12-cylinder diesel engines delivering efficient class-leading performance.”
The yacht will be provided with six different operating modes, including the automated “smart hybrid” and “charge hybrid” modes, which enable all power sources to be used as required.
In “electric mode” the yacht propulsion and on-board power can be supplied continuously by the generators for optimum fuel consumption and comfort on-board for extended passages.
In “silent mode”, which uses power solely from the batteries, up to 40 minutes of propulsion and 120 minutes of domestic power are available on battery power alone without any noise or emissions.
Knut Müller, head of marine and government business at MTU, says: “The combination of diesel engines and electric motors, in addition to batteries and their variable areas of application, offer yacht owners significant benefits.
“Silent cruising, combined with low vibration and emission levels, offer tremendous gains in terms of on-board comfort.”

Set Your Eyes On The Sunseeker 86
- By Phil Draper Photography by Joe McCarthy
- Updated: April 28, 2015
The drive from my Suffolk home on England’s east coast to Sunseeker, which is based in Poole, Dorset, on the southwest coast, is four hours minimum without activating any speed cameras. (And there are lots in this part of the world.) At 8 o’clock on a mid-October morning at Sunseeker House, hot coffee and a bacon roll restored a suitable enthusiasm for the day, as did an unexpected break later in the heavy, dark clouds that the short-range shipping forecast had suggested were going to be particularly nasty. In the end we enjoyed Indian summer sunshine for the duration of our morning with the builder’s 86 Yacht. And while my morning had been fairly ordinary, this Sunseeker proved herself completely the opposite.
Never mind the unarguably bold, and to me quite stunning, profile that’s pure contemporary Sunseeker; the really interesting bit lies beneath the vessel’s waterline. Sunseeker designed the 86 Yacht from the keel up to deliver serious cruising flexibility. Conceived by the builder’s longstanding in-house naval architect Ewen Foster, this yacht’s hull form is a hybrid. It can deliver the usual Sunseeker planing speeds, but it’s a little bit deeper in the forefoot and a little flatter aft, which helps deliver more efficient displacement and semidisplacement performance. The transom deadrise is 17 degrees. By comparison, the 88 Yacht she replaces in the Sunseeker lineup had a transom deadrise of 20 degrees.
The hull is produced by a two-part mold that was created in-house from a two-part milled plug. This split-mold approach has nothing to do with performance, but is more to do with yard practicalities when it comes to moving the tooling around. Unlike many other builders, Sunseeker still bangs the wet layup drum. None of its hulls and superstructures are vacuum-infused, despite the advantages and successes — including lightness, strength and increased efficiency — competitors have had with such techniques. Sunseeker says it prefers its method to avoid printthrough issues in the vessel’s gelcoat finish.
Specifying the engines for a hull like this is a crucial decision. Four engine options, all MTUs, are available: twin 1,380-horsepower 10V2000 M84s or twin 1,659-horsepower 12V2000 M84s, both of which are derated, or twin high-performance 1,622-horsepower 10V2000 M94s or 1,950- horsepower 12V2000 M94s. However, it is also worth mentioning that all of the aforementioned engines will soon be replaced by versions that comply with the latest EPA Tier 3 and IMO Tier II requirements with in-engine technology, and IMO Tier III requirements using SCR exhaust-gas after-treatment. Whatever the engine designation, the selection should depend on your cruising requirements, not top-speed vanities.
With the more powerful M94 ratings, the topspeed options are 27 knots with the 10Vs (which is what Hull No. 2, our test boat, had) and 31 knots with the larger 12Vs. But that’s not the interesting call. There is little difference in high-speed cruising ranges — 488 nautical miles at 2,200 rpm and 22 knots, or 468 nm at 2,200 rpm and 26 knots — the range does vary significantly at slow-speed cruising speeds. It is 1,430 nm at 1,200 rpm and 10.4 knots for the 10Vs; 1,188 nm at 1,200 rpm and 12 knots for the 12Vs. If you slow down a bit, she will make 1,753 nm at 1,000 rpm and 8.5 knots or 1,456 nm at 1,000 rpm and 10 knots, respectively. Long-range cruising enthusiasts will surely appreciate the 86 Yacht’s performance versatility.
With the derated diesels, the top speeds of 10Vs and 12Vs are 24 knots and 27 knots, respectively. At 10 knots, the 10Vs are spinning at 1,000 rpm and the range is around 1,450 nm with a total fuel burn, including generators, of just over 18 gallons per hour. At a virtually identical 10-knot cruise and 1,000 rpm, the 12Vs burn nearer 19 gph and deliver a 1,380 nm range. Those are long legs.
Slow-speed cruising is the real luxury with this yacht. During our test on that semiblustery autumn morning, our 86 delivered the predicted 26-knot top speed and was suitably agile for a lady of 147,400 pounds half-load displacement, but the best bit was the cruise home at just 10 knots. I was at the helm all the way back to the yard from the outer reaches of Poole Bay, at least 10 to 15 nm at 10 knots, and had time to appreciate the scenery, not least Brownsea Castle, which lies a mile from the yard and serves as one of the world’s most obvious landmarks just inside the entrance to Poole Harbour. This channel winds to the north with trot lines along the way and the sun on riverside hills, fields and some of the envy- provoking waterside properties around the exclusive Sandbanks area of Poole. The spot is probably as close as England gets to having its own Fort Lauderdale — not very close, but still pretty posh. That hour-and-a-half cruise was bliss. I would have been happy with another 1,400 nm or so like that.
The base price of a Sunseeker 86 Yacht with the biggest 12V engines is just under 3.9 million pounds (about $6 million at press time), whether spec’d with the M84s or M94s. But specify the least powerful 10Vs, and again either the derated M84s or M94s, and the basic price drops to a whisker under 3.6 million pounds (about $5.6 million at press time). Then, once all the usual options are totaled up, expect to see another 10 percent or so more added to the final bill, excluding taxes; that’s the average that extras cost.
One recent client pushed options about as far as imaginable with a production yacht. The fourth and fifth 86 Yachts will be based in the Seychelles. One will serve as a support vessel for the owner’s two 230-plus-foot megayachts. The other will be a dive boat with the main salon certified as a wet deck and an editing suite aboard to process underwater video.
During our test in mid-October, little more than a month after the 86 premiered at overlapping boat shows in France and the United Kingdom, 19 had already been sold, totaling 18 months’ worth of orders and delivery slots now pushing into early 2016. All of those are “Euro-spec” boats, although bound for various regions of the world.
Ironically, despite all the sound arguments for derated engines and displacement and semidisplacement cruising speeds — all of which Sunseeker flagged as desirable in market research and focus groups — all the boats sold thus far are contracted with high- performance M94s. As the saying goes, “You can lead horses to water, but you can’t make them drink.”

High-performance levels, efficiency, environmental compatibility and the flexibility of the propulsion system are great interest today when operating a yacht. We believe that the focus in the future yacht industry will be more and more on smart and innovative system solutions rather than just focussing on the power output level.”
The new Sunseeker yacht will have an integrated MTU hybrid propulsion system. It will consist of two 12-cylinder MTU Series 2000 diesel engines (each delivering around 1,432 kW/ 1,947 hp ), onboard generators, electric propulsion modules, transmission system, batteries, control, and monitoring systems and can be expanded on a modular basis.
The yacht will be provided with six different operating modes that are easy to operate, including the automated “smart hybrid” and “charge hybrid” modes, which enable all power sources to be used as required. In an “electric mode”, the yacht propulsion and onboard power can be supplied continuously by the generators, providing optimization of fuel consumption and comfort on board for long and overnight passages. In “ silent mode ”, which uses power solely from the batteries, up to 40 minutes of propulsion and 120 minutes of on board power are available with each pair of MTU batteries installed, with no emissions produced whatsoever.

After a two-year Covid hiatus, the annual Boot Düsseldorf boat show—the world’s biggest indoor boating extravaganza—opens its doors this Saturday for a nine-day run. With more than 1,500 exhibitors from 68 countries showing their wares in no fewer than 16 massive halls, the “boot” as it’s affectionally known, showcases every kind of watercraft, from paddleboards to superyachts. The space even includes an artificial river and a 213-foot-long pool for watersport demos. Situated on the banks of the Rhine, the event officially kicks the international boat show season. We picked the 10 newcomers debuting at the “Boot” that are guaranteed to grab the spotlight.
Ferretti Yachts 580
This latest addition to Ferretti’s burgeoning big cruiser lineup—it offers no fewer than seven other models from 50 to 100 feet—fills an important gap between the Italian yard’s 500 and 670 flybridge yachts. The design is from the drawing board of Filippo Salvetti. The 580 has a luxe three-stateroom layout and, outside, the designer created extravagant sunning and entertaining space.
At first glance, it appears not much has changed with Azimut’s S7—the 70-footer making its global debut at Düsseldorf. While the sleek exterior looks similar to the original 2017 S7, it’s what lies beneath that matters. The redesigned hull, designed in collaboration with engineers at Volvo Penta, is reckoned to improve fuel efficiency with triple 800hp Volvo D13 1050 IPS power by up to 30 percent.
Sunseeker 75 Sport Yacht
Twelve inches can make all the difference. Say hello to the new Sunseeker 75 Sport Yacht, which is replacing the Sunseeker 74 Sport Yacht. That extra foot sees big changes at the stern, with a new hydraulic swim platform, revised stairs to the aft cockpit, which has a new seating layout, and a reworked garage door. Twin MAN V12s give a 46mph top speed. Joining the new 75 at Düsseldorf is Sunseeker’s highly-anticipated, all-new Superhawk 55.
Princess S72
Britain’s Princess Yachts is using Düsseldorf to reveal the latest in its model lineup, the new Princess S72. With the “S” short for Sportbridge, this racy-looking, 72-foot coupe, with four staterooms and a compact flybridge, fits between the builder’s S66 and S78 luxury cruisers. Twin MAN V12 diesels—standard 1,650hp or optional 1,800s—deliver up to 41mph top end.
Capoforte SQ240i
This stylish 10-seat Italian-built dayboat is the newest entry into the booming electric dayboat market. Powered by a mid-mounted 50kW electric motor and shaft drive from German maker Molabo, the high-sided, 24-foot SQ240i is a sexier-looking alternative to ma ny competitors. It’ll also come with the option of innovative Yamaha Harmo electric sterndrive propulsion.
Galeon 560 Fly
Rule-breaking Polish builder Galeon Yachts has come up with a new 58-foot flybridge cruiser design that actually features more glass than fiberglass. The stunning new Tony Castro-designed Galeon 560 Fly, making its global debut at Düsseldorf, features extra-deep hull windows that run almost the entire length of the yacht. Add to those, oversize, floor-to-ceiling cabin windows, and this new 560 floods its cabins with light.
Invictus TT420
We’re big fans of the Italian Invictus TT460 day boat with its head-spinning axe-bow and wave-like hardtop. At Düsseldorf, the 460 is getting a new kid brother, the TT420, to give the boutique builder an entry into the popular segment. Designer Christian Grande has again penned the bold exterior, which even includes a small tender garage at the stern. Powering the 420 is a pair of 440-horse Volvo D6s.
Bavaria SR33
Prolific German builder Bavaria is using its home show to show off the latest in its cruiser range, the 37-foot SR33 weekender. Designed by the talented Marco Casali, its all family-friendly space includes an oversized cockpit, sun-shading hardtop and beds for five. With today’s fuel prices, it’s smart-thinking that the SR33 will be offered with a single, fuel-sipping 350hp Volvo diesel.
Contest Yachts 50CS
Call it plug, play and sail. Dutch semi-custom sailboat builder Contest Yachts not only has a brand-new sailing yacht, the 50CS, debuting in Düsseldorf, but it’ll be offered for the first time with electric propulsion. Contest worked with Torqeedo to utilize its 50kW Deep Blue motor, which is juiced by 40kW lithium-ion batteries from BMW. The all-new center-cockpit 50CS will join the newly-launched 49CS at the show.
Last year, the Groupe Beneteau-owned Polish builder Delphia announced that come 2024, all its boats would ditch diesel power and offer electric only. The first to use batteries is the brand new, Tony Castro-designed Delphia 11 inland cruiser making its Düsseldorf debut. Motivated by a single 50kW Torqeedo Deep Blue electric motor and juiced by an 80kWh battery bank, the 35-footer is said to have a range of around 44 miles at its 6mph cruise speed.
