Yacht Charter in British Virgin Islands

Gyrfalcon by Sunreef Yachts - Top rates for a Charter of a private Luxury Catamaran in British Virgin Islands

British Virgin Islands yacht charter

The British Virgin Islands is dubbed as the "sailing capital of the world." With no direct flights from the US or any part of the world, the only way to get to the islands is either via a ferry or a private yacht charter. This means the area creates a perfect balance of small tourist numbers and luxury services. With sheltered waters and islands near to each other, the best way to enjoy the British Virgin Islands is on a luxury yacht charter.

Why charter a yacht in British Virgin Islands?

BVI is short for the British Virgin Islands, and it's regarded as one of the best sailing destinations in the world. With luxury resorts and plenty of islands to explore, chartering a yacht is a no-brainer if you plan on a holiday in this region. There are 60 islands, islets, and cays in the BVI, most of them being uninhabited with no structures taller than the tallest palm trees. With snorkeling, diving, swimming, and a wide array of water sports activities, the region is the perfect island getaway in the Caribbean.

What are yacht charter prices in British Virgin Islands?

With the BVI being a luxury destination, superyachts are a popular option for tourists. Yacht charters for a week are pretty much common, with yacht charter prices being offered on a weekly basis. A yacht below 150 feet can range from $15,000 to $70,o00 per week, while a yacht over 150 feet can range from $100,000 to $200,000 per week. Large groups of visitors can take advantage of all-inclusive prices, including food, water sports equipment, private chefs, and VIP services. A 282-foot superyacht for 12 people can cost around $450,000 for a week's rental in British Virgin Islands.

When is the yachting season in British Virgin Islands?

British Virgin Islands has a tropical rainforest climate moderated by trade winds. Hurricane season is between June to November, which means the months of November to July is the peak yachting season in the islands.

British Virgin Islands yacht charter for a day

If you only have a full-day for a yacht charter, then the island of Virgin Gorda is a must-activity for a full-day yacht charter. It is home to The Baths, the most popular natural attraction in the British Virgin Islands. The Baths are characterized by large boulders that create natural pools and stunning grottos, with beautiful blue crystal waters that are perfect for swimming. You can then have lunch at the top of the Baths restaurant, where stunning views are yours to behold. Head out to Spanish Town and Leverick Bay, which have quaint local villages with many shops and restaurants, before heading back to your yacht and returning to the marina in Tortola to end your yacht charter for a day in BVI.

British Virgin Islands yacht charter overnight

A BVI overnight yacht charter allows you to moor on a bay and explore several destinations and water sports activities. You can start your overnight yacht charter at Cooper Island, which is home to the Cooper Island Beach Club's eco-resort. Anchor on a bay and enjoy swimming by the boat, snorkeling, jet-skiing, or diving, then head over to the resort where you can have your lunch or afternoon snacks. The island is close to a diving paradise called "wreck alley," where divers get to explore shipwrecks underwater.

Get back to the Bay and enjoy craft beer, enjoy a sunset, then head back on board to stay in your cabin for the night. In the morning, head to Deadman's Bay in Peter Island, where you can have breakfast at the islands' private resort's beach bar and restaurant. Cruise your way to Salt Island nearby, and explore the salt ponds, or take a historic walk. Dive enthusiasts can also visit the Wreck of the Rhone, which sank in 1867. Head back to Tortola at sunset and enjoy your last hour onboard an overnight yacht charter.

British Virgin Islands yacht charter for a week

A week-long liveaboard on the BVI blends the best of both worlds: secluded islands with no development in sight, beautiful anchorages, and laid back villages with beachside bars. Here is a sample itinerary for your week-long yacht charter itinerary in the British Virgin Islands:

Day 1: Virgin Gorda Island

A definite must in your BVI holiday, the Virgin Gorda Island is home to The Baths, but also a great island to explore on foot. Stock up on supplies at the local market, enjoy the local produce and delicacies, buy some souvenirs, and then head out to the North Sound, an excellent overnight anchorage.

Day 2 and 3: Anegada Island

This beautiful island is a charter favorite. It is sparsely populated and rural, and only 11 miles long, as well as low and flat, unique in the BVI. The BVI islands are volcanic but not Anegada, which sits on a coral reef, making it a unique spot in the region. Visit the Caribbean-style shops and restaurants, enjoy snorkeling and swimming at the beaches, and visit the salt ponds, teeming with birdlife and the famous pink Caribbean flamingos. Enjoy two days on this island, which is perfect for hours or lazing around on the beach and experiencing local culture.

Day 4: Trellis Bay

Head over to Trellis Bay with its excellent local vibe and vibrant market. If you're visiting on a full moon, the Bay is famous for its full moon beach parties.

Day 5: Jost Van Dyke

Jost Van Dyke is another famous BVI destination, famous for its rural and rugged scenery, but also for its vibrant beachside bars.

Day 6: Normal Island

The famous Indians and Caves are great for exploration. The Caves are renowned for being the inspiration behind the novel Treasure Island, written by Robert Louis Stevenson. Anchor at The Bight, which is a famous overnight anchorage. Spend breakfast over the waters, enjoy a couple of hours of water sports activities, then head back to Tortola to end your week-long liveaboard on your private yacht charter.

Wedding yacht charter in British Virgin Islands

British Virgin Islands provide a magical setting for an intimate and unforgettable wedding. A wedding yacht charter allows you to head to a private, secluded beach, where you can exchange vows at sunrise or sunset, then get back on the boat for a few hours of cruising while celebrating your union with family and friends. Celebrate your wedding in style for a yacht charter for a wedding, creating the ultimate dream come true when it comes to a tropical wedding destination of your dreams.

Luxury yacht holiday in British Virgin Islands

The British Virgin Islands is a luxurious destination, so if you're planning on a holiday in this region of the world, expect to be blown away by the possibilities for a luxurious yacht charter. Superyachts are famous here as you cruise around the islands on a one-week adventure, or hire a smaller luxury yacht for a weekend itinerary. Whatever kind of holiday you wish to experience in the BVI, you can rest assured that you will find a luxury yacht holiday in these beautiful islands.

The British Virgin Islands is a luxury destination best enjoyed on board a luxury yacht charter. The islands are immaculate, and the natural scenery is extraordinary. With luxury resorts and superyachts cruising along the waters, you can expect to have the most unforgettable luxury vacation of your life in the British Virgin Islands.

Testimonials.

Katy T, Feb 2024

We just returned from our bare boat charter with Conch Charters. We spent 3 weeks sailing around the USVI & the BVI. It was an amazing trip !! This was our 3rd time chartering with Conch. The first 2 times we chartered a monohull. This time we chartered a catamaran. The people who work at Conch are one of the main reasons that we continue to charter with Conch. Every single person that we have come in contact with is not superbly qualified but also super nice and very easy to work with. The boats are always well maintained and in great condition. From the bed linens to the generator, everything is always perfect. We are already planning our bare boat charter for next year - of course with Conch Charters !!!!

Katy T, Feb 2024

Dave Naney, April 2023

As we embark on our second charter with Conch (to whom we have referred everyone that wanted to go to the BVI that we know) we just wanted to thank all of you (and especially Hazelle) for all of your kindness, help, patience and information. Without doubt, your customer service ethic is the best we have seen anywhere. We have all worked for The Walt Disney Company in our lives so we know good customer service.... Thank you again. We are so excited to be seeing Conch Charters and the BVI again.

Yes! Make sure you confirm with with your broker or charter company that your yacht is approved for travel to BVI.

Most likely, yes. You'll need to confirm with your charter company. I actually think catamaran's are much easier to maneuver and handle as compared to a monohull. Read more about why I think the catamaran is the better option for your sailing trip here .

It is customary to tip 20-25% of the cost of the charter.

It's a reservation system to book mooring balls at some of the popular bays and anchorages. I break it down in more detail here . No, you don't need to use it. But, in peak season, the mooring balls at the most popular spots (Cooper Island and Great Harbour in particular) will fill up fast - sometimes before noon! Most crews would prefer to spend the day enjoying themselves rather than racing to their next destination. In that case, it might make sense for you to try and use their system. Good luck!

Guide to the British Virgin Islands

A delightfully deserted fantasyland, ideal for sailing retreats

Laced like emerald drops in the glittering waters of the Caribbean , the British Virgin Islands are peppered with pristine beaches, hidden coves and picturesque anchorages. Humbling and magical these volcanic islands are rugged in character and strikingly beautiful. Those looking for calm, tranquil sailing, deserted bays and excellent dive spots needn’t look any further than the British Virgin Islands.

Often referred to as simply the BVIs, these islands offer some of the most opulent and compelling yacht charter destinations in the world. Centred in one of the most spectacular cruising areas in the Caribbean Sea, the BVIs are home to a plethora of lush isles and islets, ideal for island hopping with each island offering its own unique delights.

Roughly split into two island chains the British Virgin Islands stretch for more than 30 miles and are separated by the Sir Francis Drake Channel. Located on the northern side, the main island of this glorious archipelago is Tortola which is neighboured by the Beef Island, Guana Island, The Camanoes and The Dogs. On the south side, Norman and Peter Islands, Dead Chest, Salt, Cooper and Ginger islands, and Virgin Gorda can be found. To the north east of the main group of islands are Jost Van Dyke and the Tobago islands, whilst Anegada lies 14 miles north of Virgin Gorda. Most of the islands are small and uninhabited with some being privately owned, the most notable of which being Richard Branson’s Necker Island - the secluded nature of this gorgeous destination is the ultimate island escape.

Largely unspoiled by development and brushed by gentle trade winds, the British Virgin Islands make for a great sailing yacht destination without being too rough for motor yachts . Abound with excellent yacht facilities it comes as no surprise to know that this charter destination has become one of the most popular in the world.

Tortola The main island in the British Virgin Islands, Tortola is an eclectic mix of thick alluring jungle, towering mountain peaks and an assortment of vibrant towns. Deemed as the charter capital of the Caribbean, Tortola boasts an abundance of things to do with the hustle and bustle of the island capital of Road Town being an undoubted highlight. Sports enthusiasts will relish the opportunities to snorkel, fish, dive and hike before taking part in a game of tennis or cricket whilst beach lovers will admire the stretches of secluded sands which are lapped by crystalline azure waters.

Virgin Gorda Brimmed with beauty and loved by all, Virgin Gorda has somehow maintained her innocence despite her increasing popularity. A yacht charter is the ultimate way to explore, with a relishing cool breeze making for calm and tranquil sailing. The Baths are unmissable, boasting obscure rock formations of mysterious shapes, which invite hikers to traverse the immense boulders and alluring grottoes.

Jost Van Dyke Small in size but with a big personality, Jost Van Dyke radiates an overwhelming sense of welcome, making it difficult for visitors to leave this captivating destination. Reputed as the ‘party island’ of the BVI, Jost Van Dyke is rich with mountainous scenery and lush vegetation making it a secluded getaway with a vibrant twist. Laced with restaurants and bars aplenty, Jost Van Dyke is one of the most popular islands in the Caribbean and for good reason.

Luxury Private Yachts in BVI

The British Virgin Islands are considered one of the best-crewed catamaran destinations in the world. The catamarans operating in the area have evolved significantly and are now a popular sailing option in the virgin islands. With their larger size, superior stability, and luxurious amenities, guests can enjoy more space and comfort while on the BVI yacht charters.

This is because catamarans operating in the British Virgin Islands, far from being the second-best sailing choice of the distant past, are getting bigger and more luxurious , affording a pleasant, relaxed journey on the gentle trade winds of the archipelago. A fully crewed catamaran is a comfortable alternative to motor yachts, especially above the 60ft+ range .

Furthermore, while the British Virgin Islands have traditionally been known as sailing destinations, there has been a growing demand for motor yachts among luxury yacht charter guests. As the marinas compete to accommodate more and larger vessels, their numbers increase There are now over 200 large (over 100 feet meters) motor BVI yacht charters operating in the area in the high season. The motor yachts offer more privacy and prestige , more water toys , and comfort as they are able to accommodate a larger number of guests (and crew). Note that jetskis are not allowed in the BVI yacht charters (yes for USVI – except for national parks).

Virgin Islands Entry Regulations

From covid to work permits and business licences.

With the health crisis is almost at an end , Covid regulations in the British Virgin Islands have changed. They have not disappeared, but transferred into a bureaucracy war of work permit and trade licences.

What that means is that your charter starting in USVI might not go to the BVI because the paperwork did not make it through. How can you be sure that your selected yacht has the necessary paperwork to go? That depends on your dates. Consult your preferences with us and we’ll be very direct about where your selected yacht is in terms of feasibility of a BVI charter. Note that the rules are subject to, often very unexpected, changes.

BVI charter guests on vacation are no longer required to register for entry clearance or show proof of travel insurance, regardless of their vaccination status. Also, there is no longer the need to present a COVID-19 test result upon arrival in the British Virgin Islands.

British Virgin Islands Coastline with yacht and bright blue water

About The British Virgin Islands

The British Virgin Islands (BVI) are part of a volcanic archipelago located east of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The BVI comprises four main islands and about thirty smaller ones, many of which are still uninhabited. Discover what these islands have to offer through BVI yacht charters and explore the waters. The mix of man-made decadence and untouched natural beauty has made the BVI one of the best destinations to travel to within the Caribbean. The areas inviting turquoise blue water, bountiful coral reefs, and sun-bleached sand beaches will make any vacation unforgettable. Get unrivaled access to the waters with private yachts in BVI and go at your own pace.

The largest island is Tortola and is home to the capital of BVI, Road Town. Tortola is not like most capital cities; it is the perfect location to relax and unwind. The island’s cobblestone pathways and winding walkways make it the ideal place to explore and go shopping, especially since it is home to many boutiques and small gift stores. Like all the islands in the BVI, Tortola has some stunning beaches, including Smuggler’s Cove and Cane Garden Bay. Anegada Island is known as one of the best places to go scuba diving or snorkeling. BVI catamaran charters offer a wide array of activities, so don’t wait to include them in your itinerary. If you are looking to get lost in nature, this is the place for you. Jost van Dyke may be small in size, but it is the ideal place to go if you are looking for a place to party. Make sure to head over to the Soggy Dollar Bar in White Bay to try the famous rum cocktail known as the Painkiller. Last, Virgin Gorda is the third-largest island in the BVI and is known for its luxury resorts and exclusive yacht clubs.

One of the main draws of BVI is the sheer number of islands located within the archipelago. Travelers can spend the day on the beach on Jost Van Dyke before enjoying a sunset drink at Pirates Bight on Norman Island before heading to the Cooper Island Beach Club for dinner. Island hopping is a must in the BVI, so that is why British Virgin Island charters is a great option. In the end, the possibilities are endless, so whatever type of vibe you’re looking for, BVI has something perfect for you.

Best time to visit The British Virgin Islands

The British Virgin Islands (BVI) offer a tropical climate that welcomes travelers year-round. With average temperatures ranging from 22-28°C (72-83°F), you’re in for delightful weather no matter when you visit.

High Season

The high season in the BVI spans from February through April and the weeks around Christmas and New Year’s. Favorable winds and balmy weather attract many North American and European travelers. If you’re an enthusiast of stronger winds, consider visiting around Christmas when the legendary Christmas winds blow at around 25-30 knots for days.

Best Months to Visit BVI

The best months to visit are May and June, though it’s a beautiful vacation spot for most of the year (outside of hurricane season). These months offer optimal water conditions for activities like snorkeling and scuba diving. You may even encounter seasonal marine wildlife, such as turtles and dolphins. Since this period is just after the high season, booking your charter well in advance is advisable, especially if planning an extended trip.

Less Crowded Options

For those who prefer fewer crowds but still desire an excellent experience, early December and January are beautiful options. Local events and festivals also take place during these months, offering cultural experiences you will want to experience.

Off-Season and Cautions

Charters continue through June and July, but most yachts halt services starting August 1st due to the approaching hurricane season. The islands experience their hottest and most hurricane-active months from August through October. Many establishments shut down during this period.

Rainfall and Visibility

November through May generally offers the least amount of rainfall, making these months ideal for outdoor activities. Water visibility is usually at its peak during these months, which is perfect for underwater exploration.

Travel Considerations

Before planning your trip, check for any travel restrictions or visa requirements, especially if you travel abroad. Tortola is the most accessible island in the BVI, with regular flights and ferries from major airports and nearby islands.

Family Travel

If you’re traveling with family, the months following high season—May and June—offer a more relaxed atmosphere perfect for family bonding, while the high season is often more geared toward adult travelers.

Safety Measures

Though the BVI has protocols for hurricane season, staying updated with weather forecasts is always advisable if your travel dates fall within this period.

“ This was the most amazing trip ever. The crew made all attempts to make this an amazing adventure. N othing was to much trouble for Captain Nicolai, Captain Oliver, First mate Gemma and Chef Roma. We were a group of 10 and we all had the same opinion. Our travel to the different ports were very interesting and enjoyable. The meals were so delicious. Chef Roma went above and beyond to prepare the meals. I can’t say enough about this wonderful trip .”

British Virgin Islands Yacht Charter | Yacht Information

Yacht charter options range from mono-hull sailboats, sailing catamarans, power catamarans, and motor yachts. These crewed yachts have at least a captain and chef. Catering to your meals and drinks to your tastes. Moreover, every beach is no more than two hours sailing from another in the BVI.

Motor Yachts

Modern motor yachts are spacious and have large staterooms with private en-suite facilities. Depending on the size of the yacht, many can accommodate six or more people. Motor yachts can move quickly from one location to the next, thus maximizing your time. Motor yacht QTR is a 116-foot Lazaara that charters in the Virgin Islands.

Catamarans are great for first-time sailors and families since they offer a smooth and stable voyage. They are spacious, and the separate hulls provide privacy. The new catamaran Cocktails & Dreams is a good choice.

Power Catamarans

Power catamarans have generous space with many amenities and water toys. In addition, the ability to get into shallow anchorages is excellent due to the shallow drafts.

The Latest Yacht Toys

The yachts offer a variety of water toys. Choose from snorkeling, tubing, paddle boarding, kayaking, water skiing, and sea scooters. A few yachts also offer e-foils and kiteboarding. You can do as much or as little on your British Virgin Islands yacht charter as possible.

Professional Crew

Luxury Yacht Charters matches you with the perfect yacht and crew. The captain will create your trip based on your desired activities, menus, and places you want to visit. For example, you may want a very active getaway with diving, snorkeling, and nightlife. Or you may prefer a quiet vacation with private beaches, calm coves, and beautiful sunsets.

Insights | BVI Yacht Charter

It is tempting to jump on a plane and head to the islands . But before you pack your swimsuit and sunscreen, consider the following. These tips will ensure that your BVI boat charter is your dream vacation.

The best time of year for a British Virgin Islands yacht charter is January to July, which is the dry season. The temperatures hover around 82°F, and humidity is lower, making outdoor activities more pleasant. Trade winds also make the warm air comfortable.

During the holiday season of November and December, Christmas and New Year celebrations ensure plenty of activities for everyone. Check our Virgin Islands Yacht Charter Specials for the most recent deals.

What to pack

For your BVI yacht charter, lightweight, bright casual clothing is best since it is warm and sunny all year. You may wish to bring a light sweater or wrap in case of cooler nights and air-conditioned restaurants.

Swimwear is perfect for the beach, but it is standard to cover up when walking around public areas. Bring comfortable shoes for walking and sightseeing. However, leave your high heels at home since the roads may be uneven.

Bring an umbrella for the rare shower if you travel during the rainy season, July through December.

Marinas in the British Virgin Islands

The marinas in the BVI offer more than just dockage. They're also a place to hop on and off your yacht, catch a ride into town, or enjoy the marina's restaurant. Excellent customer service is a hallmark of these marinas.

Bitter End Yacht Club

Hurricane Irma destroyed the Bitter End Yacht Club marina on Virgin Gorda in 2017. Now, back and better than ever, the BEYC marina has room for more than 25 yachts. Step ashore and browse the Reeftique Boutique, have a rum punch at the Quarterdeck Club, and stroll on the soft sandy beach.

Nanny Cay Resort & Marina

Nanny Cay has berths for 320 yachts, 120 in the Outer Marina and 200 in the Inner Marina. There are slips for up to eight megayachts. It is a great place to start your vacation, no matter what boat you charter.

The marina has three restaurants to enjoy:

  • Pegleg's has al fresco dining on the beach.
  • Omar's Nanny Cay offers genuine local and Indian cuisine.
  • Island Roots serves coffee, baked goods, fruit smoothies, breakfast, and lunch.

Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbour

The Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbour Marina is in the heart of Spanish Town. Experience the local atmosphere, book a dive trip with Dive BVI , and explore the island.

Best Time to Visit

The best time for a BVI Yacht Charter is between December and April, which is the high season for tourism. During this time, the weather is sunny and dry, and the temperatures range from the mid-70s to mid-80s Fahrenheit.

The peak of the high season is between Christmas and New Year’s when many visitors flock to the BVI to enjoy the festive season in paradise. This also means that prices for charters and flights are generally higher during this time.

If you’re looking to avoid the crowds and save some money, you can consider visiting the BVI during the shoulder season, November / Early December and April to July. This is the low season for tourism, and the weather is still warm and tropical. However, you should be aware that this is closer to hurricane season, so it’s essential to obtain trip insurance should something happen.
