After several months of looking and two failed surveys, I have just completed the purchase of my first boat, a Jeanneau Merry Fisher 795. As a newcomer to boating I have to admit my first impression of boat brokers was pretty poor (compared to other industries I deal with) - descriptions were definitely on the optimistic side, boats were untidy, dirty and generally poorly presented. No excuses, just very poor sales and I would be careful who to list my boat with in the future. Then I came across Ancasta (Leo Walters) who shone bright like a beacon. The description of the boat was accurate, minor faults highlighted and extra pictures provided on request. Communications with Ancasta have been excellent, the boat was very well presented for inspection and after sales Ancasta remained interested to ensure my experience was positive. I wouldn't hesitate going to Ancasta for another purchase and if you are thinking of selling a boat, consider using Ancasta, you will get better service and value for money than many other brokers out there. And as a buying customer I would feel confident buying through them so you would be more likely to sell to me!

I thought that I would drop you a line to say how very pleased we were with the help and support we got from Kostas and Josiane in Ancasta Badalona. We always felt that they were working for us, not just to make a sale. In particular Kostas was able to help and advise on some of the little touches to make Ione look a little better for sale – replacing a rusty heads jubilee clip, acid cleaning around some seacocks etc. In addition he went well beyond the call of duty in taking me to his chiropractor when I wrecked my back cleaning in lockers! We are now mourning being boatless for the first time in over 40 years. Best wishes.

How Much Does a Yacht Cost? The Average Prices and Costs of Yachts

The UK has a long, rich maritime history and, as such, the yachting industry thrives in this country. Sailing is a popular hobby or pastime for many people, but for others it’s very much a lifestyle.

If you’re in the latter category, you might be looking to buy your own and be contemplating the cost of a yacht. There’s a huge variety of vessels available – from motor yachts to a sporting yacht – and the sheer amount of choice and yacht sizes (both new and used yachts) can seem bewildering. Below, we take you through the various options and the costs associated with each.

The Average Price of a Yacht in the UK

While yachts are often regarded as synonymous with luxury, in reality they come in a startling range of sizes, designs, and prices. The average cost of buying a yacht in the UK varies considerably, according to a number of factors.

Whether you’re looking to buy a used vessel or a brand-new yacht, as well as the size and type of yacht you want, will all partly determine the price you’ll pay.

How Much is a Small Yacht?

At the cheaper end of the market, you should expect to pay a minimum of £10,000 for a small sailing model which will be functional but modest, with the price rising to £50,000 or more for a new, more sophisticated, motorised yacht.

If you’re looking for something more spacious with a range of additional features, mid-range yachts in the UK are often priced between £50,000 and £500,000. These boats may come with more advanced navigation equipment, refined interiors, and extra amenities. These are more suitable for experienced sailors who are prepared to spend more on their passion.

Larger, motor-driven yachts will set you back hundreds of thousands of pounds. For example, a new 50-foot yacht costs upwards of £200,000 while the 70-foot yacht cost or 100-foot yacht cost will set you back anywhere between £1 million and many times that sum, respectively.

How Much Does a Super Yacht Cost?

In terms of top tier yachts – or “super yachts” – these can cost millions or even tens of millions of pounds and upwards. These vessels are often enormous (ranging from 120 feet to 300 feet in length). They epitomise luxury and may have multiple decks, along with swimming pools, helipads and sophisticated entertainment facilities.

Additional Costs and Maintenance

While the upfront cost of buying a yacht is substantial, there are a number of supplementary fees that apply to yacht ownership. You can expect to pay between 5% and 10% of the yacht’s initial purchase price on such annual costs. Here are a few to consider:

• Insuring your yacht is essential and the price will vary according to its value, its size and its intended function. We offer sailing yacht insurance and motor boat insurance .
• Maintaining your yacht. Additional costs might come in the form of engine servicing or repairs.
• Finding the right place to dock your yacht is crucial and can be expensive, particularly in popular marinas. Annual mooring fees vary considerably depending on the location and the size of the vessel.

Owning a yacht is an aspiration for many people, but it’s important to bear in mind the costs associated with buying one.

You should begin your search having already established a rough budget, the size of the vessel you’d like to purchase and what you’ll principally be using it for. Otherwise, the yacht market can seem overwhelmingly diverse, making it difficult to choose the right model for you.

What is the average price of a yacht?

The average price of a yacht in the UK is difficult to determine due to the variety on offer. A yacht can cost anywhere from around £10,000 to several million pounds before you start to get into super yacht territory. That said, a mid-sized sailboat should cost you between £50,000 and £100,000.

What is the price of a luxury yacht?

The price of a luxury yacht depends on whether you’re looking for a high-spec sailing vessel or a “super yacht”. For the former, the price will be upwards of £1 million, while the latter could exceed £100 million.

How much does a yacht cost to rent?

The cost of renting a yacht varies enormously, depending on what sort of vessel you’re looking for. A mid-sized motorboat or sailing yacht costs around £400 – £1,600 per day, while a much larger, luxury yacht could easily cost around £10,000 per day.

The layout of the first hull was tailored to the owner, with the main deck offering a spacious owner’s suite forward, two additional guest cabins aft, a salon with a designer galley, and a head for guests. The interior, executed by the in-house design team at Wider Centro Stile, evokes a luxury car cabin with high-end materials and high-quality craftsmanship. The decor combines oak flooring and cleverly integrated lighting with rich leathers, sleek marbles, and glossy lacquers.

“This is the epitome of the WiLder concept—bespoke interiors completed to the very highest superyacht standards of finish, combining Italian design flair with the ultimate craftsmanship,” adds chief of Wider Centro Stile Michele Lubrano Lobianco.

I can’t help wondering if there’s still an opportunity for me to snap up some BAE Systems ( LSE: BA. ) shares, or if I’m too late to the party?

Let’s take a closer look.

The best attack is often a good defence

Firstly, it’s worth mentioning that I’m an advocate of peace, and sincerely hope all conflicts, of which there have been many news reports and column inches worth of coverage, come to a peaceful resolution.

However, it’s also worth remembering defence spending isn’t just limited to weapons for war. There are many aspects, including cyber security. This is more important than ever due to technological advancement across the globe.

The shares of BAE, and of other defence firms like Rolls-Royce , have climbed in recent times.

The BAE share price is up a whopping 42% over a 12-month period. At this time last year the shares were trading for 950p, compared to current levels of 1,353p.

More to come?

I think it’s noteworthy to mention a couple of key points. Firstly, BAE is a mammoth and industry-giant in its own right. It possesses a long track record, a wide footprint, and good relationships with all the major defence spenders across the planet. This should stand it in good stead to boost earnings and returns.

Next, according to Statista, global defence spending is currently at all-time highs, and is showing no signs of slowing. With the characteristics mentioned above, there’s plenty to suggest BAE shares could be in for more fruitful years to come.

I personally think BAE Systems shares still offer some value for money. This is despite their excellent run of late. Using two key metrics, the price-to-earnings ratio and price-to-book ratio , each reading is looks good against a peer group average. The P/E ratio comes in at 22, compared to the peer average of 44. The P/B ratio comes in at 3.9, compared to the peer average of 4.7.

Finally, a dividend yield of 2.4% would offer me a passive income opportunity too, albeit not the highest. However, I do understand that dividends are never guaranteed.

Risks and what I’m doing now

Firstly, in the defence business, product failure or malfunction could be catastrophic, and it’s a risk I must be wary of. It could harm reputation, investor sentiment, earnings, and even result in litigation, if it were to occur.

The other issue for me is if the world were to become a conflict-free zone. As I said, this is an ideal scenario from a humanitarian and personal perspective. However, from an investment view, earnings and returns could be dented.

Overall I’m of the belief that BAE Systems shares are still a good buy right now. They could continue their ascent, as the global geopolitical landscape is more complex than ever. However, with more facets to defence spending than weapons, I reckon the business is in a good position to provide me with shareholder value, even away from times of lots of conflicts, like now.

I’d be willing to buy some shares when I next have some available funds to invest.

What happened this week in the UK election campaign, from a betting controversy to Farage's ambition

LONDON — (AP) — The U.K.'s general election campaign is less than two weeks away now, and the prevailing trends don't appear to have changed much.

The left-of-center Labour Party is the clear favorite to defeat Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's Conservatives, with Keir Starmer looking set to replace him as U.K. leader on the morning of July 5.

Given how condensed U.K. election campaigns are — it's not been a month since Sunak called the election for July 4 outside his residence at No. 10 Downing Street in the pouring rain — the leaders must be getting pretty tired.

At least the European Championship soccer tournament has arrived — as has summer. Both should provide a distraction for one and all.

Here are some things we’ve learned in the past week:

Britain, it's often said, is a nation of gamblers. Mostly on horses, or the football. But the bookmakers can offer odds on almost anything.

For general elections, there's a growing market over the date of the vote, as unlike most other democracies that decision rests solely in the hands of the prime minister.

All everyone knew was that Sunak had to call an election by January 2025. For months, he'd been saying that his “working assumption” was that it would be in the second half of the year.

Given the upcoming summer vacation period, most pundits and lawmakers in his Conservative Party, were predicting that it would likely take place in the fall. So it came as something of a surprise that Sunak announced the date on May 22.

It wasn't that much of a surprise to some people apparently. The Gambling Commission, the industry's regulator, has revealed that it's investigating allegations that a string of people with links to Sunak bet on the timing of the July 4 contest before he announced it.

The sums aren't massive but they are potentially hugely damaging for a party that, according to opinion polls, is facing a big defeat.

Four people are said to be involved, including one of Sunak's bodyguards, who has been suspended, and two candidates for Parliament, one of whose husband happened to be the party's campaign chief. He's been put on a leave of absence, but the candidates haven't been suspended from the party. There's a growing expectation that more people may be implicated.

Sunak has said that he's "incredibly angry" about the allegations and said that anyone involved in using inside information to bet on the date of the election should face the full force of the law as well as being expelled from party.

His opponents including, Keir Starmer have seized on the allegations and said Sunak should go further and suspend the candidates now.

The odds for a Starmer win are 33-1, which means anyone fancying a flutter on that outcome would have to bet 33 pounds just to get one pound in return.

Not really worth it, is it?

One thing that the public, including politicians, can bet on without knowing the outcome is Euro 2024, which is taking place in Germany.

Both England and Scotland have qualified for the monthlong tournament, though neither has impressed.

At least it's providing a distraction from the election coverage, for the leaders as well as the public. Three matches a day, all live on television. With summer finally making its presence felt, it's certainly going to be a boon for the pubs.

Both Sunak and Starmer are keen football fans. For the record, Sunak supports Southampton, which has just been promoted back to the Premier League. Starmer supports Arsenal, which was just nipped to the title by Manchester City.

He'll be hoping that he goes one better, come the morning of July 5.

There's not much mileage in putting a bet on though. See above.

Nigel Farage, the self-styled political disruptor who was so instrumental in Britain's vote in 2016 to leave the European Union, has never readily undersold himself.

He was at it again this week, as his Reform U.K. party launched its manifesto for government, though it wasn't a manifesto in fact. Farage, who only became leader of the party on June 4, said that it was a “contract” with the British public.

Admitting that the document was “not something with which we’re going to govern the country,” Farage said he is aiming to become the leader of the opposition to Labour, which he claims has already won the election.

Seeking to woo Conservative voters from the right, he said he wants to scrap the country's commitments to “net zero” and get net migration to zero.

Though Reform U.K. is third in most opinion polls, it's not expected to win many seats in the House of Commons. Bookmakers — yes, them again — think he is favorite to finally win a seat in Parliament, when he contests the southeastern seaside town of Clacton. If he does, it won't be for a lack of trying. This is the eighth attempt by the 60-year-old Farage.

His aim is clear. He openly states he wants to be a candidate for prime minister by the next election, which will have to take place by 2029.

He really doesn't undersell himself.

In two weeks time, the results will be in. The left-of-center Labour Party remains favorite to win the most seats in the 650-seat House of Commons. While major pollsters give varying figures, all show a double-digit Labour lead, with relatively little change since Sunak called the election.

According to Ipsos, Labour could win 453 seats and the Conservatives 115, with a Labour majority of 256, its biggest ever. Other pollsters have predicted something worse for the Conservatives, which have been in government since 2010.

There are signs from some leading Conservative figures that they think that's the most likely outcome. Even Treasury chief Jeremy Hunt said the Conservatives aren't pretending that the party winning the election is “the most likely outcome” and said his own political future is “too close to call” — his constituency is in a leafy area outside of London, a traditional Conservative safe seat.

You can now buy your very own Scottish island for a bargain £500,000 , but social butterflies need not apply.

While Mullagrach Island boasts a whopping 88.7 acres (35.9 hectares) of land, it’s in the middle of nowhere and only has a tiny log cabin for you to live in.

Its new owner will need to take a 35-minute boat ride to get to and from the mainland, while the nearest city – Inverness – is a two-hour, 80 mile journey away.

If you don’t mind the isolation, though, it could be the perfect home – especially since it’s up for auction with a starting price that’s a whopping £57,000 less than the average London flat .

Mullagrach, the most northerly of the 20 or so Summer Isles , has a rugged coastline and is home to a range of seabirds including great skua, kittiwakes, shag, fulmars and geese.

The archipelago has also got a lot of history, with Tanera Mor, the largest island and the only one which is currently inhabited, serving as a harbour for Vikings to shelter, and later becoming the centre of a thriving herring fishing industry in the 18th century.

Marketed by Galbraith, Inverness, Mullagrach was purchased by the owners over 15 years ago and has a plethora of greenery, beaches, and caves to explore – a nature lover’s dream.

However, potential buyers looking to view it will be limited due to weather conditions, and have been advised to wear outdoor clothing, sturdy footwear and be fit enough to travel by boat and climb ladders to reach the island.

It’s also important to note that the only building on Mullagrach is a basic wooden shack.

Planning permission for the eco-friendly cabin was granted in 2014 and it was then made in Switzerland, to bring the best tech to the remote Scottish spot.

Although only a wooden building, it has been cleverly constructed to cope with the weather on the island and also blend into the landscape, featuring a curved, heather-clad roof design.

Inside, the cabin offers everything you need to survive, with box beds, a kitchen to chef up a storm and a wood burning stove for cold, dark nights.

And the composting toilet is even good for the environment too – just be careful in the wind and stormy weather.

The island also has a landing stage and ground tackle for running mooring, and to get out and about and explore the seas close by, there’s the added option of buying the boat off the seller, separately.

It is being marketed by Galbraith estate agents and advertised on Rightmove.

Phiddy Robertson, who is handling the sale, commented: ‘This is an exciting opportunity to acquire not just a lovely coastal home but also an island, offering the ultimate private getaway.

‘The island is a haven for wildlife and the owners have created a small cabin, which is well equipped, to enable full enjoyment of the island with minimal impact on the abundant birdlife.

‘The setting is absolutely magical and would offer a wonderful opportunity to relax and reconnect with nature.’

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said he is "deeply grateful" for Joe Biden's decision to prioritise air defence deliveries for Ukraine. 

The Ukrainian president said his country was in critical need of the capabilities to protect its cities and civilians from Russian attacks. 

"The partnership between Ukraine and the United States is strong and unwavering. Together, we are protecting life against terror and aggression," he added. 

It comes after the US said a recent defence pact signed by Russia and North Korea was a "cause for concern". 

The recently signed defence pact between Russia and North Korea is a cause of concern but is no surprise, the White House has said.

Speaking to reporters, White House spokesman John Kirby said the agreement between the two countries was a sign of Russia's desperation for foreign assistance in the Ukraine war.

The deal has seen both countries vow to help each other if they faced armed aggression, and replaces previous treaties between the countries. 

Russia said the pact was needed because of "the deep evolution of the geopolitical situation in the world and the region".

Mr Kirby also said the US would reprioritise planned deliveries of foreign military equipment to go to Ukraine, which is in "desperate need" of more air defence capabilities.

Vladimir Putin has warned that South Korea would be making a "big mistake" if it decides to supply weapons to Ukraine. 

The Russian president's comments come after South Korea said a new defence agreement between North Korea and Moscow was "absurd" and it would reconsider sending arms to Kyiv as a result. 

Mr Putin said Seoul had nothing to worry about when it came to the mutual defence pact. 

Russian state media quoted him as saying that Moscow expected its cooperation with North Korea to serve as a deterrent to the West. 

He also refused to rule out supplying high-precision weapons to the country. 

Russia is considering making changes to its nuclear weapons doctrine, Vladimir Putin has said. 

The Russian president made the comments while speaking to reporters at the end of his Vietnam trip. 

The existing doctrine states that Russia may use such weapons in response to a nuclear strike or in the event of a conventional attack that poses an existential threat to the country. 

Ukrainian troops have been launching mid-range reconnaissance drones in Kharkiv.

Russian forces crossed into parts of the northeastern region last month, and officials claim they have seized at least a dozen villages.

But Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said Kyiv's forces are gradually pushing Russian troops out of the contested area.

A police search is under way for a woman who allegedly desecrated the graves of Ukrainian soldiers.

Kyiv city's prosecutor's office said the unknown woman vandalised the graves this morning. 

Commemorative plaques and lamps were torn off and broken, it said.

The Ukrainian flag was also "mutilated", it added.

"Operational investigations and searches are being carried out to establish the woman's identity," the office said in post on Telegram. 

If caught and found guilty, the woman could face up to five years in prison.

• Mr Putin signed a series of deals with his Vietnamese counterpart To Lam during his state visit;
• The two leaders signed agreements to further co-operation on education, science and technology, oil and gas exploration and health;
• They also agreed to work on a road map for a nuclear science and technology centre in Vietnam;
• Following the talks, Mr Putin said that the two countries share an interest in "developing a reliable security architecture" in the Asia-Pacific region based on not using force and peacefully settling disputes with no room for "closed military-political blocs";
• The Russian leader also met Vietnam's Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and is scheduled to meet Communist Party general secretary Nguyen Phu Trong - Vietnam's most powerful politician;
• The trip has resulted in a sharp rebuke from the US embassy in the country.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said Romania's decision to provide his country with two Patriot air defence systems will strengthen security in Ukraine and throughout Europe.

"This crucial contribution will bolster our air shield and help us better protect our people and critical infrastructure from Russian air terror," the Ukrainian president said on X.

The Patriot, which stands for Phased Array Tracking Radar for Intercept on Target, is a surface-to-air missile defence system.

For months now, Ukraine has been calling for countries to provide more air defence systems to help protect it from Russian attacks.
