Tips For The Best Catamaran Galley Design

Boat Galley up or down

“Galley up or galley down?” I have been asked this question more often than any other about catamaran cruising life. The only answer in my opinion, is galley up. When at sea, every meal comes from the galley, so live-aboards spend a lot of time in the galley and many cruising couples and families find that the separation is not ideal. Therefor, in modern catamarans, the most popular galley design option is galley up which makes it a focal point of the main living and entertainment areas.

It makes it easy for the chef/cook to be part of the social activities while keeping an eye on the food. It is also a safety issue when at sea. Having the galley on the same level as the serving area and cockpit is less tiring and safer than hauling hot food up the stairs. Ventilation is better on the bridgedeck than down in the hulls which makes cooking a lot easier when prone to seasickness.

The downside of the galley up design is less privacy for the cook and it can significantly impact the size of the saloon seating area, specially on smaller cats. For me, the most important feature for any galley on any boat is its functionality when at sea. A well-designed galley should be safe, well-ventilated and functional. The wrap-around or U-shape galley is ideal in my opinion. It allows for loads of counter space and offers the ability to brace oneself on the high seas. You need that even in a catamaran from time to time!

Read more here about my recommendations for catamaran galley designs. These posts, “ Choosing your Catamaran Galley: Things To Consider ” and “Galley Design Issues On A Catamaran”  will give you all the information needed to choose your galley layout, design and and the pros and cons of each design.

The oruwa boats of the galle fisherman.

North of the Galle Fort Mercantile Seamen Training institute, just before the old fortress entrance you will find the Galle harbour fishing fleet. They still use catamaran boats based on traditional designs. They are called 'oruwa' (plural = 'oru') and have a very distinctive square sail with the top corners held upright on two vertical masts in a V shape, not the normal one central upright mast.

Galle Fort traditional oruwa catamaran fishing boats in Sri Lanka

For stability these long thin boats have an outrigger that is kept on the windward side. They come in different sizes. What I found very unusual is the lack of open space on top of the boat. Most canoe catamaran style fishing boats have a wide sitting area. With the Sri Lankan fishermen's boat you can just about get your legs in.

Unless the weather is very stormy the Galle fishermen go out fishing every day early in the morning and late at night. If you are in the area late morning you may be lucky to see some of the oruwa catamaran fishing boats coming back into port and being hauled up onto the beach.

When secured the crew unload their catch and the women folk start gutting and preparing the fish for sale by the road side. Local Sri Lankans come to purchase fish for their evenings meal but a lot of the catch is sold to fish mongers who haggle with the fishermen to get the best price. They then sell the fish to local hotels and restaurants.

Sailing Boat : The quintessential sailing experience. With its streamlined hull and classic silhouette, a sailing boat offers an intimate connection to the waves. It’s perfectly suited for the varied waters around Sri Lanka, from navigating close to the historic fort walls of Galle to treading deeper waters in search of whales. With its responsive handling and ability to venture into narrower spaces, a sailing boat is ideal for those looking to explore the many hidden gems along the Sri Lankan coast. It’s a choice that combines the age-old romance of sailing with the thrill of discovery.

Catamaran : The epitome of luxury on water. A catamaran, with its twin hulls and expansive deck, offers unparalleled stability and space. This makes it an excellent choice for those traveling with family or a group, ensuring comfort for all on board. one island many worlds

One-day tour in Galle that includes a catamaran ride in Koggala Lagoon.

Galle (formerly Point de Galle) is a major city in Sri Lanka, situated on the southwestern tip, 119 kilometers (74 mi) from Colombo. Galle is the provincial capital and largest city of Southern Province, Sri Lanka, and is the capital of Galle District.

Mangroves play a crucial role in mitigating soil erosion in wetland ecosystems. Unfortunately, human activities pose a significant threat to their survival. Nevertheless, considerable efforts are being undertaken to rehabilitate degraded mangrove habitats. A notable example of such an initiative can be observed in the restoration of the Koggala Lagoon. As a sustainable traveler, you can make a valuable contribution towards the protection of mangrove ecosystems.

• Dutch & the English fort • Turtle hatchery • Catamaran ride around Kurulu Duva in the Koggala lagoon • Visit the plant nursery and the mangrove information center

Dutch & the English fort

in the Bay of Galle on the southwest coast of Sri Lanka, was built first in 1588 by the Portuguese, then extensively fortified by the Dutch during the 17th century from 1649 onwards. It is a historical, archaeological, and architectural heritage monument, which even after more than 432 years maintains a polished appearance, due to extensive reconstruction work done by the Archaeological Department of Sri Lanka

Turtle conservation project

This project is situated in Induruwa, in the Southern Province of Sri Lanka. The main purpose of the project is to incubate turtle eggs and release the baby turtles to the sea.

Catamaran ride around Kurulu Duva in the Koggala lagoon

Visitors are taken on a catamaran ride around the island, Kurulu Duva, to witness the restoration of the mangrove fence under the project. Along the way, there is an opportunity to see various mangrove species and other birds.

Visit the plant nursery and the information center

The natural mangrove saplings get destroyed due to various reasons, so they are collected and looked after until they grow up to a certain level before being planted at the lagoon. You will be taken to the nursery where the mangrove seedlings have been prepared for planting. Further insights on plant seedlings and involvement in planting can be obtained by visitors, who will be also able to work with the locals on the project. At the information center, visitors are provided with insights into the mangrove plant species and the mangrove ecosystem in Sri Lanka.

Catamaran "Two Oceans" Weblog

In galle, sri lanka.

11.1.13 – Friday – In the morning we called port control, requesting to go into the harbor; they gave us instructions to wait by the entrance for the Navy. They came and two officers came aboard, checked the papers and allowed us to go inside, staying on board to show us in.

Yachts anchor and tie stern to a floating pontoon which is not connected to shore; you have to go with the dinghy to a corner to the south of it.

IMG_3013 - Copy

Our agent, Chatura Kudachchi, owner of Tango Shipping was waiting there with a few of his men and helped us fill the necessary forms.

IMG_3011 - Copy

He then took us to immigrations and customs where all the procedures were finished very quickly. We didn’t have to go to the harbor master; he did that.

Next we met Marlin, a man recommended to facilitate shore arrangements, like laundry and tours. He took us to his home and we sat down to plan our land tour, which was going to take three days.

IMG_3014 - Copy

                       Marlin and Family

He took us to a bank to use the ATM, then showed us the touristic Old Dutch Fort area and left us to walk around. On the way back to town we passed the fishermen’s harbor and it was interesting to see the traditional fishing Proas they use.

IMG_3045 - Copy

In town we visited the fruit and vegetable market, where the abundance of produce was displayed.

IMG_3051 - Copy

I love markets and this one was especially rich.

In the evening we gladly accepted Chatura’s invitation to come to his place and use his Wi-Fi, connecting to the web after a long time.Galle, pronounced GOL, is a place of good vibrations; the town is busy with commerce and people are friendly. We like it here! Tomorrow at 0700 Marlin will collect us from the harbor gate to go inland.

catamaran galle

Galle is more famous for its Fort than its surf points however on the beach the waves are fine for beginners. Clossenburg Beach break is great for beginners of if you want an early morning paddle. One of the better breaks in Galle. Mainly rights in the bay, sand bottom entry, holds to 4ft and about 100m rides.

The bay is overlooked by the Closenberg Hotel (on the right if facing the bay). Closenberg Hotel is an old colonial style hotel with a modern bar/pool areas with weekend parties, easy to find in a Tuk Tuk. Next to Deweta Station.

Being close to the main town of Galle there is potential that the sea is not as clean as some of the more remote beaches, just don’t swallow too much of the water, pollution and run off after heavy rain can be a problem. There are plenty of other sightseeing and shopping options and some of the better and cleaner break at Kabalana are only a 10 minute Tuk Tuk ride away.
