Perry weitz is living the lavish life.

Perry Weitz , whose Weitz & Luxenberg firm paid Sheldon Silver nearly $4 million , has plenty more where that came from.

The superlawyer brags that he and his partner have collected $8 billion in settlements — mostly in asbestos and defective drug cases — and Weitz proudly lives lavishly, with a private jet, two huge yachts and a 44-acre ranch outside Aspen, Colo.

He regularly flies to the ski resort on his $30 million Challenger 605, which costs at least $40,000 per trip.

“The plane has his initials in the N-number — the equivalent of a vanity plate on a car,” said one source.

The Brooklyn-born Weitz — who describes himself as “a clenched-jaw champion of justice for the little guy” — also has two yachts, having spent nearly six years building the 190-foot Carpe Diem to replace its 150-foot predecessor, which he is selling now for $14.9 million.

The lawyer was very involved in designing the new $54 million boat, down to the master cabin walls “upholstered in a diamond pattern with button tufting,” according to SuperYachtWorld . The magazine doesn’t name Weitz, but describes the owner as a New York lawyer who runs six miles a day.

“He was very specific that he wanted the warmth and subtle light play that the grey sateen would bring to this elegant space,” designer Carol Williamson told the magazine.

In a gushing profile in New York magazine , Weitz downplayed greed as his motivation, and highlighted his altruism.

“It is gratifying when you see the good you are doing, not only for the individual clients and their families, but also the difference you have made trying to make products in this country safer,” Weitz said.

With the shift in tides this past year, Weitz planted roots in Miami. “When the opportunity presented itself to join Michael and Russell at Mondrian South Beach, it was the perfect opportunity at the right time,” noted Weitz. “Having spent the winters in Miami from NY, I decided to permanently relocate and devote much of my time to Mondrian South Beach. I look forward to being a part of this next wave of unique hospitality offerings and vibrant, city-wide economic expansion.”

Trial Lawyer Hall of Fame Inducts Perry Weitz

Weitz & Luxenberg is proud to announce our co-founding partner Perry Weitz was inducted into the Trial Lawyer Hall of Fame, established by the National Trial Lawyers Association. Every year, the association honors and recognizes exceptional trial lawyers who, “through their practice,” have clearly established themselves “as true champions and crusaders for American Justice.” (1)

Mr. Weitz has left an “indelible mark on the American legal tradition through a lifetime of service to the American public, the Constitution, and the American trial bar.” (2) His illustrious career began shortly after he graduated from Hofstra University Law School in Hempstead, New York. His first big wins were just around the corner.

Asbestos Lawsuit Victories Drive W&L

New York State amended its statute of limitations on asbestos exposure litigation in 1987. Mr. Weitz quickly took the lead in the “surge” of asbestos exposure litigation that emerged. (3)

He reminisces it was his “unyielding sense of duty to the thousands” of asbestos-exposure victims that helped W&L achieve verdict after verdict. This dedication ultimately lead “to a multi-billion dollar federal fund to help the people who had suffered from exposure to asbestos.” (4)

Sports Lessons Play a Key Role in Success

“I’m honored to receive this award,” Mr. Weitz says. “I want to tell you possibly why I’m receiving this award.

“My life revolves around sports. I’ve played a lot of sports. And I learned a lot of valuable life lessons. There are superstars in every sport. Those God-gifted athletes who have talents head and shoulders above everybody else,” Mr. Weitz adds.

“All of them are part of a team. On their own, they would never have the accomplishments they were achieving. But as part of a team, they shine. And they shine even better. And the truly great athletes, they make everybody around them perform better.

• Work harder than your adversary and it will pay off.
• Play for the right reasons and for the right goals.
• Trust your teammates and make each one of them better with your performance.
• Play hard and play to win, but play honorably.”

Cutting Our Teeth on Asbestos Litigation

Clarence Thomas accepted a free yacht trip to Russia and got flown out on a complimentary helicopter ride to Putin's hometown, 2 Democratic senators say

• Democratic senators have accused Justice Clarence Thomas of accepting undisclosed gifts and trips.
• They say he accepted gifts such as a yacht trip to Russia and a chopper ride to Vladimir Putin's hometown.
• The senators want an investigation into potential tax fraud and ties between Thomas and Harlan Crow.

Two Democratic senators have accused Justice Clarence Thomas of accepting a free trip to Russian President Vladimir Putin's hometown.

Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island and Sen. Ron Wyden of Oregon filed a letter to US Attorney General Merrick Garland on July 3, asking to open an investigation into the Supreme Court judge.

The letter said there was a "serious possibility of tax fraud" and accused Thomas of having "secretly accepted gifts and income potentially worth millions of dollars."

The letter's appendix , which lists 35 undisclosed gifts, shows a "yacht trip to Russia and the Baltics" and a "helicopter ride to Yusupov Palace, St. Petersburg," both listed under the year 2003.

St. Petersburg, Russia, is Putin's birthplace and where he grew up. The president now resides in Moscow.

The appendix list is titled "Likely Undisclosed Gifts and Income from Harlan Crow and Affiliated Companies." Harlan Crow is a real-estate developer and the former chairman and CEO of the Trammell Crow Company.

The senators cited a ProPublica report from May last year detailing Thomas' hushed-up financial ties to Crow.

The report said that apart from the Russia trip, Crow also funded Thomas' grandnephew Mark Martin 's boarding-school fees, which cost "more than $6,000 a month."

In their letter, the senators wrote that other gifts from Crow included "multiple instances of free private jet travel, yacht travel, and lodging," as well as "gifts of tuition for Justice Thomas's grandnephew," "real estate transactions," "home renovations," and "free rent for Justice Thomas's mother."

In September, Thomas said he'd accepted three trips on a private plane owned by Crow . He didn't mention any other gifts.

Whitehouse and Wyden aren't the only Democrats who've voiced concerns over Thomas' sketchy financial ties.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez of New York filed articles of impeachment against Thomas and Justice Samuel Alito on Wednesday.

"Justice Thomas and Alito's repeated failure over decades to disclose that they received millions of dollars in gifts from individuals with business before the court is explicitly against the law," her statement reads.

Representatives for Thomas, Whitehouse, Wyden and Crow didn't immediately respond to requests for comment from Business Insider sent outside regular business hours.
