powerboat race tv

Powerboat P1 will film its upcoming races in Cocoa Beach, Sarasota and Clearwater events—part of the APBA Offshore Championships—for one-hour broadcasts to be aired in the USA nationally on CBS Sports Network, followed by airing on Fox Sports Florida/Sun, as well as additional Fox Sports Regional Networks.

The races will also be streamed on P1’s Facebook page . The Sunday races will be streamed live, race by race.

Mike Yowaiski is slated to be furnishing commentary for the races; Martin Sanborn will most likely be broadcasting with him.

All P1 SuperStock Championship events will also be filmed and broadcast on Fox Sports Florida/internationally as per usual. The P1 SuperStock class will race with the bracket classes within the Florida APBA Offshore Championship events, but will be filmed to have their own television show.

In other offshore racing news, Sunoco Racing Fuels has entered into a partnership with Offshore Powerboat Association (OPA) and Powerboat P1 as the official fuel provider for this year’s APBA Offshore Championship race series.

“Sunoco has a long history of supporting Offshore Racing dating back to the early days, and we are excited to be a part of this race series,” says Southern Racing Fuels President Rick Williams . “Sunoco has provided many National and World Champion race teams with performance fuels, and we appreciate their support over the years.”

With an anticipated increase in registered race teams participating in the upcoming season, Sunoco performance fuels will be available at each race venue offering professional and consistent on-site service. Both Powerboat P1 CEO Azam Rangoonwala and OPA President Ed Smith have agreed that forming corporate partnerships and series sponsors like Sunoco are critical as they focus on growing this new race series.

Powerboat P1 Announces 2021 APBA Offshore Championship Series TV Coverage

Headquartered in the United Kingdom with domestic offices in Orlando, Fla., Powerboat P1 will continue its seven-year relationship with FOX Sports Regional Networks for the balance of 2020 and throughout the 2021 season. That means the 2021 American Power Boat Association Offshore Championship Series and a Class 1 special, as well as this year’s upcoming contests in Cocoa Beach and Fort Myers Beach, Fla., are scheduled to be covered in post-event television programs.

Real-time APBA series race coverage will continue this season and next via a livestream broadcasts on the Powerboat P1 Facebook page.

“Television broadcasting to promote and support the P1 brands and key stakeholders plays a key role in Powerboat P1’s business strategy,” said Azam Rangoonwala, the chief executive officer of Powerboat P1. “We’re pleased to announce not just the continuation of our relationship with FOX Sports Regional Networks, but the expansion of it.”

The APBA series programs will air on nearly two dozen regional sports networks across the United States, including Fox Sports Florida, Fox Sports South and Fox Sports West. (A full list with broadcast times can be viewed on the P1 Offshore website .) Starting Friday, June 19, these and others will screen four one-hour shows—three covering the 2019 APBA series races in Florida plus one program dedicated to a complete 2019 season review.

According to Rangoonwala, Powerboat P1 also plans to launch an online powerboat racing chat show in July. “The show will feature invited guests from across the sport and around the world,” said Rangoonwala.”

Key west worlds race no.3 - imposing their will.

Eric Colby, SOTW: Throughout the 42-year history of the offshore powerboat racing world championships, there are tales of teams that finished in the middle of the pack on Sunday but did enough to claim the title because they had done the math to determine where they needed to finish. Then there were those winner-take-all battles in which the numbers didn’t matter because the contenders were all so close coming into the finale. ... Continued ...

Eric Colby, SOTW: There’s an almost inexplicable allure about Key West. Sure, former TV announcer and pro wrestler Stan Lane coined the phrase, “To be the best, you must win Key West,” but the racers take this motto to heart. The combination of the possibility of myriad conditions on the same course and the tightest corner in the famous harbor make the Key West championship arguably the most sought-after trophy in the sport. ... Powerboats set to thunder through marathon in 7 mile grand prix.

powerboat race tv

If you’re a fan of big boats going really, really fast – think 140 mph – next weekend is your Christmas in April.

For the first time in seven years, powerboat racing will return to Marathon with Race World Offshore (RWO)’s 7 Mile Grand Prix, taking place on April 28-30. With the addition of the new officially-sanctioned race, the Florida Keys will now bookend the American Power Boat Association (APBA)’s National Series, which returns in November for its conclusion in Key West.

“When I saw them moving all the construction equipment off the (Old Seven Mile) bridge, that’s when I started planning to have this as part of our national series,” RWO President Larry Bleil told the Weekly. “I’m just really proud and excited to bring this event to two places in Monroe County.”

With a 5.6-mile course that runs along the Old Seven Mile Bridge in its final straightaways before the finish, spectators can watch the epic duels between 12 classes of boats boasting thousands of horsepower by land or by sea, in addition to opportunities for dry pit visits and post-race parties at local businesses throughout the weekend.

“We want to thank Faro Blanco Resort, Faro Blanco Marina, the Courtyard Marriott, Aquarium Encounters, Sunset Grille and all our other hospitality sponsors for hosting us,” said RWO managing director Atif Awan, giving additional nods to the city of Marathon, Tourist Development Council and nearly 30 other event sponsors, including a newly-announced partnership with Monster Energy.

“The city of Marathon is absolutely pleased that the powerboat races are back in our neighborhood,” said Marathon City Manager George Garrett. “We look forward to watching the event … and having a great time while doing it.”

The Keys Weekly took time to sort through all available information about the races and sat down with Bleil and Awan on April 18 to clarify a few final pointers. Here’s what spectators need to know:

powerboat race tv

Viewing the races from the Old Seven Mile Bridge is FREE .

Two-day VIP packages are available for purchase for $300 and include designated seating, food and drinks and admission to special events throughout the weekend. More details are at raceworldoffshore.com

WATCH THE RACES

The primary viewing area is on the Old Seven Mile Bridge , but spectators may be able to see some parts of the races from the western gulfside edge of Marathon as shown in the course map. Reserved VIP areas will be sectioned off on portions of Old Seven as well as the park at the base of the bridge. Spectators are welcome to watch from the water , provided they stay behind the spectator vessel lines as indicated on the course map.

THE RACE SCHEDULE

Offshore testing will take place from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday. Saturday’s races are scheduled to run from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Sunday’s races, including several classes of larger boats, will run from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. For a full schedule, including individual class races, visit raceworldoffshore.com/marathon.

SEE THE BOATS

Fans may visit boats and their race crews from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday through Sunday, at the dry pit locations at San Pablo Catholic Church and the west end of the Marathon International Airport. With additional security considerations, inspections and fueling occurring at the airport pit location, fans are encouraged to visit San Pablo as the primary dry pit location. Wet pits are located at Faro Blanco Marina.

THE PARKING

Parking for spectators is available at Marathon Community Park. The Pigeon Key train will run every 15 minutes from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday to deliver spectators from the park to Sunset Grille, where they can walk to the bridge. VIP guests may park at Sunset Grille.

THE PARTIES

Florida Keys Aquarium Encounters will host a welcome party for racers and fans from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Friday, April 28 with an after-party at Faro Blanco Resort. An awards ceremony will begin at 6 p.m. on Sunday, April 30 at Faro Blanco with an after-party to follow.

Due to the races, the 33rd Street boat ramp and Old Seven Mile Bridge parking area will be closed on April 29 and 30.

The area around the race course and under the east end of the Seven Mile Bridge will be closed to vessel traffic throughout Saturday and Sunday. The area will temporarily open to boat traffic from noon to 1 p.m. each day.

Finally, all the short-track griping and moaning can be put away. At least for a while.

No, NASCAR hasn't yet announced any kind of package or rule changes on that front, but all three major series will shift their focuses to the 1½-mile quad-oval that awaits at Texas Motor Speedway.

The Craftsman Truck Series, Xfinity Series and Cup Series are set for a weekend tripleheader, starting with practices and qualifying sessions on Friday. The truck race is set to go at 8:30 Friday night with the Xfinity event on Saturday afternoon, all leading up to the Cup Series AutoTrader EchoPark Automotive 400 on Sunday.

Last week, William Byron won his third event already this year and he and Denny Hamlin have swept the last four races. Byron won the last race at Texas in September.

Mother-daughter duo … Eugenie and Isabel on the road in Race Across the World series four (BBC One)

Race Across the World series four review – TV that makes you feel that there is hope

It’s back! The BBC’s smartphone-free travel sends contestants racing from Japan to Indonesia, and it’s as full of human kindness and intimate relationship portraits as ever

R ace Across the World might be one of television’s most wholesome shows. Now into its fourth series proper, after a Covid-delayed celebrity spin-off last year, it follows paired teams as they attempt to travel thousands of miles without some of the comfortable trappings of modern life. Contestants hand over their smartphones and bank cards and are given the cash equivalent of the cost of a one-way flight to their final destination. They must get to the end through a series of checkpoints using public transport and ingenuity, taking on odd jobs to earn extra funds, and, crucially, relying on the kindness of strangers along the way.

Since it made its debut in 2019, the series has grown in popularity, and by 2023, moved from its original BBC Two home to BBC One, much like Bake Off and Peaky Blinders before it. During the pandemic, it offered much-needed escapism. It even got a celebrity version, as all successful TV competitions must. Better still, the celebrity version wasn’t a substandard cash-in. Watching an All Saint and a member of McFly carting their mums from Marrakech to the Arctic Circle on a series of exhausting overnight rail journeys might not sound like gripping TV, but the show was remarkable. Its challenge highlights the kindness of strangers and plumbs the psychology of some of our closest relationships.

Brydie and Sharon in Race Across the World.

Series four offers more of the same, with a few subtle differences. The competitors seem a little younger, and Japan’s bullet trains are forbidden. Otherwise, it is business as usual, and this suits it very well.

Over the course of eight episodes, the five teams must travel from the island of Hokkaido, in the north of Japan, to the Indonesian island of Lombok, a journey of roughly 9,300 miles (15,000km), across seven countries, over 50 days. Last series, the pairs travelled across Canada, where most people they encountered spoke English. But this journey entails linguistic barriers, and a need to navigate what may be, for some, brand new cultural norms.

Episode one introduces us to the teams and sets them off on a voyage through Japan. At the start, they are usually jittery and error-prone. One of the teams, best friends Alfie and Owen, are the show’s youngest participants to date. They are baby-faced 20-year-olds who are the most overtly competitive and they have, perhaps, the most to learn – about the world and about themselves.

Pacesetters … Alfie and Owen in Race Across the World.

“We have got to budget our bums off,” insists Alfie, sweetly, before either he or Owen – they’re not going to argue about it, although they clearly will – misplaces the all-important map.

At the other end of the age spectrum are Stephen and Viv, an older married couple who have both recently suffered health problems, and whose approach is more laid back. As Alfie and Owen frantically yoyo between Tokyo and other destinations, Stephen and Viv enjoy a bath in hot springs. Betty and James are siblings, aged 25 and 21, who have polar-opposite approaches to travel: Betty likes to take in other cultures; James prefers an Ayia Napa trip with the lads. And there are two mother-daughter teams, Eugenie and Isabel, and Brydie and Sharon.

Travelling in this manner is high-pressured and alien, even for contestants with globetrotting experience, and Race Across the World shows just how illuminating and revelatory it can be to take people out of a familiar environment and task them with making their way in a wholly new one. Isabel turns out to be a language savant, picking up Japanese at a rate that impresses her stunned mother. Brydie, who has severe dyslexia, says that she is so used to asking people for help that she has no problem doing so on this adventure. And even for people who know each other very well, the challenge creates supercharged intimacy.

after newsletter promotion

Race Across the World is a travelogue, a history lesson, an exploration of psychology, and a thrilling competition (the programme-makers are very good at making it all seem impossibly close in the edit, even when teams are hours apart). But I love that it is also humanitarian, when all can seem so very bleak, and suggests there is still hope in the world, if we open our horizons.

Bruce Kessler, TV Director, Boater and Race Car Driver, Dies at 88

B ruce Kessler, who was known for his avid passion for race car driving as much as he was for his directing, has died in his Marina del Rey home after a short illness, his family told the Hollywood Reporter . He was 88.

Kessler directed episodes of "The Monkees," "It Takes a Thief," and "MacGyver." In addition to directing, Kessler was an enthusiastic race car drive and boater. As reported by Soundings Magazine , he began racing when he was 16 with his mom's Jaguar XK120. Within 8 years, he was seriously injured in a car crash at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

A second, and then third, car crash pushed Kessler into directing and he soon released his first short, "The Sound of Speed," which was submitted to the 1962 Cannes International Film Festival. He followed that up with four movies before he began his long career in television.

His additional credits included "The Flying Nun," "CHiPS," "The A-Team," "American Hustle," and "The Fall Guy."

Kessler was born in Seattle, Washington, on March 23, 1936. He and his family moved to Los Angeles when he was a child and his parents began a successful swimwear company. The family soon moved to Beverly Hills, where he met and befriended fellow race car enthusiast James Dean.

That friendship almost proved fatal, his brother Stephen wrote in March. In a piece for the Santa Cruz Sentinel , he explained, "Bruce was supposed to ride with Dean in his silver Porsche to the road races in Salinas on the day he died in 1955 but, due to a last-minute change of plan, drove up with another friend."

Stephen added that his brother's "third act in life" was spent was spent at sea. Beginning in 1990, he and his wife spent three years traveling the whole of the Earth by water with a small crew. When they made it back to the United States some 35,000 miles later, their boat "Zopilote" had become the sixth powerboat to finish a circumnavigation.

That trip launched him to fame within the boating community. Sounding reported, "Always calm, modest, and 'aw-shucks' self-effacing, Bruce took his newfound yachting celebrity in stride always ready to lend a hand to others who dreamed of crossing oceans or just cruising under power. He was a popular speaker at TrawlerFests, boat shows, yacht clubs, and other boating gatherings."

Sadly, his boat sank in 1994 after hitting a ledge in Alaska.

Kessler is survived by his wife, Joan Freeman, and his brothers Stephen and Rick.

2024 NHL playoff race tracker: Standings, projected first-round matchups with one week left in regular season

The nhl playoff races are heating up with just one week to go.

penguins-red-wings-getty.jpg

The NHL is in the home stretch of the 2023-24 regular season. That means playoff races are heating up atop divisions and on the wild card bubble.

Throughout the next week, every point will be crucial as teams battle for playoff positioning. Fans will have their eyes glued to the scoreboard and the standings for the next two weeks.

The playoff picture may change on a nightly basis, so CBS Sports has you covered with our NHL playoff race tracker. It'll be updated daily to show where each playoff hopeful stands as the postseason gets closer and closer.

Reminder: Here's how the NHL playoff seeding works

  • The top three teams in each division automatically qualify for the playoffs.
  • Each conference has two wild-card spots.
  • The top division winner in each conference will play the second wild card team, and the other division winner will play the first wild card team.
  • The second and third-place teams in each division will match up with one another in the first round.

*Regulation wins are the first tiebreaker, and regulation plus overtime wins are the second tiebreaker. Shootout wins are not counted in regulation plus overtime wins.

Eastern Conference playoff picture

Atlantic division.

1. Boston Bruins  | 46-18-15 | 107 points

Points percentage: .677 Regulation wins: 35 Regulation plus overtime wins:  42 Current first-round matchup:   Tampa Bay Lightning

The Bruins fell at the hands of the Hurricanes in an Eastern Conference tilt on Tuesday. Now Boston leads Florida by just one point for the Atlantic Division crown with less than a week left in the regular season.

2. Florida Panthers  | 50-24-6 | 106 points

Points percentage: .663 Regulation wins:  41 Regulation plus overtime wins: 47 Current first-round matchup: Toronto Maple Leafs

The Panthers couldn't buy a win in recent weeks, but now have won three out of their last four contests. Goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky has registered shutouts in each of the team's last two wins.

3. Toronto Maple Leafs | 46-24-9 | 101 points

Points percentage: .639 Regulation wins:  33 Regulation plus overtime wins:  41 Current first-round matchup:  Florida Panthers

The Maple Leafs have been the third team in the Atlantic Division for most of the season, and look entrenched in that spot. Auston Matthews is on a seven-game goal streak, but Thursday's loss to the Devils was a disappointing one.

Metropolitan Division

1. New York Rangers | 53-23-4 | 110 points

Points percentage: .688 Regulation wins:  42 Regulation plus overtime wins:  50 Current first-round matchup:  Pittsburgh Penguins

Luckily, the Rangers didn't surrender their Presidents' Trophy lead with the Stars losing to the Jets and the Bruins and Hurricanes being idle. New York has now lost back-to-back games as the regular season comes to a close.

2. Carolina Hurricanes | 50-22-7 | 107 points

Points percentage: .677 Regulation wins:  42 Regulation plus overtime wins:  48 Current first-round matchup:   New York Islanders

The Hurricanes have thrived since landing the likes of Jake Guentzel and Evgeny Kuznetsov at the trade deadline. Carolina looks like a juggernaut in the East, and is making a push for the Metropolitan Division's top spot late in the season.

3. New York Islanders | 37-27-15 | 89 points

Points percentage: .563 Regulation wins: 27 Regulation plus overtime wins: 36 Current first-round matchup: Carolina Hurricanes

The Islanders are absolutely on fire with a six-game winning streak, and are closing the season about as strong as humanly possible. It's been a rough year for goaltender Ilya Sorokin, but the star netminder has surrendered just three goals over the team's last two games.

WC1. Tampa Bay Lightning | 44-27-8 | 96 points

Points percentage: .608 Regulation wins:  36 Regulation plus overtime wins:  41 Current first-round matchup:  Boston Bruins

The Lightning are likely the team that no one wants to face in the opening round of the postseason. Tampa Bay did drop a shootout loss to Ottawa on Thursday, but is firmly in the top Wild Card spot.

WC2. Pittsburgh Penguins | 37-30-12 | 86 points

Points percentage: .544 Regulation wins:  31 Regulation plus overtime wins:  35 Current first-round matchup:  New York Rangers

The Penguins are the team that just won't go away despite the deck being stacked against them. Pittsburgh defeated Detroit 6-5 in overtime on Thursday in a pivotal matchup with both teams slugging it out in the Wild Card race.

Washington Capitals | 37-31-11 | 85 points

Points percentage:  .538 Regulation wins:  29 Regulation plus overtime wins:  33 Current first-round matchup:  N/A

The Capitals have lost seven of their last eight games, and recently fell at the hands of the Sabres. Washington has a tough stretch of Boston, Philadelphia, and Tampa Bay to finish up the season.

Detroit Red Wings | 38-32-9 | 85 points

Points percentage: .538 Regulation wins: 27 Regulation plus overtime wins: 36 Current first-round matchup: N/A

The Red Wings have been one of the most peculiar stories of the second half of the 2023-24 season. After looking like a shoe-in for the playoffs, the Red Wings have dropped back-to-back games to Wild Card contenders in the Capitals and Penguins, and could miss the postseason.

Philadelphia Flyers  | 37-32-11 | 85 points

Points percentage:  .531 Regulation wins:  29 Regulation plus overtime wins:  33 Current first-round matchup:  N/A

The Flyers finally brought an end to their eight-game losing streak with a massive win against the Rangers. Philadelphia needed a victory in the worst way since they still are only one point out of the second Wild Card spot in the East despite all of their struggles.

Western Conference playoff picture

Central division.

1. Dallas Stars  | 50-21-9 | 109 points

Points percentage: .681 Regulation wins: 39 Regulation plus overtime wins: 47 Current first-round matchup:   Vegas Golden Knights

The Stars had a golden opportunity to take the lead in the Presidents' Trophy race with the Rangers loss. However, Dallas was shut out by Winnipeg in a 3-0 defeat.

2. Winnipeg Jets | 49-24-6 | 104 points

Points percentage: .658 Regulation wins:  43 Regulation plus overtime wins:  49 Current first-round matchup:  Colorado Avalanche

All of the sudden, the Jets have racked up five consecutive victories, and leapfrogged the Avalanche for second place in the Central Division. Mark Scheifele has scored goals in back-to-back games to pace the Jets offense.

3. Colorado Avalanche | 49-24-6 | 104 points

Points percentage: .658 Regulation wins:  41 Regulation plus overtime wins:  47 Current first-round matchup:  Winnipeg Jets

Nathan MacKinnon  continues to make a Hart Trophy push with his sensational season. After looking unbeatable in recent weeks, the Avalanche have dropped five of their last eight games, and saw the Jets take over second place with a win on Thursday.

Pacific Division

1. Vancouver Canucks | 48-22-9 | 105 points

Points percentage: .665 Regulation wins:  42 Regulation plus overtime wins: 48 Current first-round matchup:   Nashville Predators

The Canucks hold a sizable lead in the Pacific Division, and recently got a huge win against the Golden Knights. It's likely that the Canucks win the division, but the Oilers aren't out of it just yet.

2. Edmonton Oilers | 48-24-5 | 101 points

Points percentage: .656 Regulation wins: 38 Regulation plus overtime wins:  46 Current first-round matchup:   Los Angeles Kings

Connor McDavid and the Oilers look to be locked into second place in the Pacific Division. The Oilers have won three consecutive games, including a 5-1 dismantling of the Golden Knights without McDavid in the lineup.

3. Los Angeles Kings | 42-26-11 | 95 points

Points percentage: .601 Regulation wins:  36 Regulation plus overtime wins:  40 Current first-round matchup: Edmonton Oilers

The Kings were recently able to reclaim the No. 3 spot in the Pacific Division, and have won four of their last five games. All of the sudden, Los Angeles looks like a lot more dangerous as the postseason approaches.

WC1. Nashville Predators | 45-29-5 | 95 points

Points percentage: .601 Regulation wins: 36 Regulation plus overtime wins:  42 Current first-round matchup:  Vancouver Canucks

The Predators were one of the hottest teams in the NHL , but have lost four of their last seven games. Still, Nashville remains the top Wild Card team in the West for the time being.

WC2. Vegas Golden Knights | 42-28-8 | 92 points

Points percentage: .590 Regulation wins:  32 Regulation plus overtime wins: 38 Current first-round matchup:  Dallas Stars

The Golden Knights have fallen out of the No. 3 spot in the Pacific Division after suffering three straight losses. Still, trade deadline acquisition Tomas Hertl looked strong in his Vegas debut on Monday, so there are still plenty of reasons for optimism as the regular season winds down.

St. Louis Blues | 42-32-5 | 89 points

Points percentage: .563 Regulation wins:  30 Regulation plus overtime wins: 37 Current first-round matchup: N/A

The Blues certainly aren't out of the playoff picture as they're only three points behind the Golden Knights for the No. 2 Wild Card spot. However, facing the Stars and Hurricanes over the final three games isn't exactly an ideal situation.

NASCAR at Martinsville spring 2024: Start time, TV, streaming, lineup for Cook Out 400

powerboat race tv

For the second consecutive weekend, the Commonwealth of Virginia hosts a NASCAR race as the Cup Series shifts from Richmond Raceway to Martinsville Speedway.

This weekend also marks the second consecutive short-track race and third in the last four weeks. But Martinsville is not just any short track; it is both NASCAR’s smallest and oldest racing venue. NASCAR held its first race at the 0.526-mile paperclip-shaped track all the way back in 1949, and the speedway has hosted at least two races a season every year since.

Who will win the last short-track race of the spring? Here’s everything you need to know to get ready for the Cook Out 400 at Martinsville Speedway:

What time does the Cup race at Martinsville start?

The Cook Out 400 starts at 3 p.m. ET at Martinsville Speedway.

What TV channel is the Cup race at Martinsville on?

Fox Sports 1 (FS1) is broadcasting the Cook Out 400 and has a pre-race show beginning at 2 p.m. ET.

Will there be a live stream of the Cup race at Martinsville?

The Cook Out 400 can be live streamed on the  Fox Sports website  and on the Fox Sports app.

How many laps is the Cup race at Martinsville?

The Cook Out 400 is 400 laps around the 0.526-mile oval for a total of 210.4 miles. The race will feature three segments (laps per stage) — Stage 1: 80 laps; Stage 2: 100 laps; Stage 3: 220 laps.

Who won the most recent races at Martinsville?

Reigning series champion Ryan Blaney led 145 of 500 laps, including the final 23, before edging Aric Almirola by 0.899 seconds in the playoff race on Oct. 29, 2023 to clinch a berth in the championship race.

And one year ago on April 16, 2023, Kyle Larson led the final 30 laps and pulled away from Joey Logano by 4.142 seconds for his first career win at Martinsville.
