Building a Legacy with Viking Yachts

  • By Lenny Rudow
  • Updated: July 2, 2021

Viking Yachts

When brothers Bob and Bill Healey bought Peterson-Viking Builders in April 1964, there was no way they could have foreseen a future including two New Jersey manufacturing facilities totaling over 910,000 square feet; about 1,500 employees; close to 5,000 hulls delivered; ownership of companies that handle aluminum tower fabrication, marine electronics and marine service; and dominance of the production sport-fishing yacht market. Yet, that’s where five-plus decades of boatbuilding has brought them.

Today, Viking Yachts produces 90 percent of every boat in-house, leaving only components such as engines to other companies. The builder offers six different lines of boats ranging from 38 to 93 feet length overall. And the brand is constantly upgrading, re-engineering and refining its designs and construction methods. Even the most successful models have been regularly retired through the years, to make way for new and improved versions.

Viking Yachts

“Take our 55 for example,” says president and CEO Pat Healey. “That boat was a total icon. It had new styling, a new bottom, a new layout and used new materials. And it started an entire family of yachts leading to the 61, the 65, the 74—all were insane successes.”

Whether it’s utilizing resin-infusion construction, tweaking engine-room vents, or developing a unique electrohydraulic rudder-steering system, the company has maintained a forward-looking attitude, harnessing the latest tech to build better yachts.

“We can do almost everything by computer today. We even tank-test boats virtually now,” Healey says, “and we can do it over a dozen times in a couple of days. We can move strakes, change the center of gravity and tweak just about anything. As a result, our latest models don’t just meet our projections—they beat them.”

Viking Yachts

Also recently, Viking entered the center-console market with the Valhalla Boatworks brand. Valhallas range from 33 to 46 feet length overall and are powered by twin to quadruple outboards. Running on a Michael Peters stepped-V ventilated-tunnel, twin-step hull design, these boats can hit hat-stripping speeds of 60-plus knots. While on board the V-41, I found that it comfortably cruised in the mid-40-knot range through 2- to 3-foot seas.

Why did a builder so successful with yachts decide to enter the center-console market?

“The project was actually in the works on and off for nearly two decades,” says Viking’s director of communications, Chris Landry. “It didn’t get off the ground until now due to the market, business strategies or other reasons, but it’s something we always wanted to do.”

Viking Yachts

Innovation is in Viking’s DNA. The fact that the company builds everything it can in-house is part of the innovative philosophy, and Healey says the technique is vital to success.

“We found 30 years ago that building our own parts in our own facility gave us timeliness, quality, and the ability to trace what works best and what can go wrong,” he says. “And it’s part of why we’ve turned into what’s really a marine group, with our subsidiaries Palm Beach Towers and Atlantic Marine Electronics. The vendors were good, but we wanted better. We wanted the best of the best. So, we took control and did it ourselves.”

In-house construction means quality control, whether it’s finely finished cabinetry, ramrod-straight and labeled wiring harnesses, or baffled fuel tanks. That quality also lets Viking service all aspects of the yacht post-purchase. When something does go wrong—we are talking about boats, after all—Viking knows how to remedy the situation. Being able to do so quickly and with minimal effort is one reason Viking purchased a South Florida service center in Riviera Beach and staffed it with Viking-trained personnel.

Viking Yachts

“It’s part of the commitment we have to our owners,” Healey says. “We pick up the phone. We take care of our customers. You can talk to a Healey. That’s the kind of boatbuilding team my father wanted us to be.”

Viking’s latest projects include a $1.4 million dredging and dock replacement at its New Gretna shipyard in New Jersey. At Viking’s Mullica facility, also in New Jersey, the builder is developing an additional 12,000 square feet of space where the four Valhalla production lines are located. Despite the line’s fledgling nature, Viking expects to build 90 Valhalla hulls in the next fiscal year.

Research and development into new tech also continues on the inboard side. To say that Healey gets animated when asked about the future of Vikings would be an understatement.

Viking Yachts

“I 100 percent believe that diesel-hybrid technology is close and will be a game-changer for marine,” he says in a rapid-fire staccato. “I can envision running to the fishing grounds on your mains, then shutting them down and ramping up a variable-speed diesel-electric generator. You could then troll all day on electric before running back home on the mains. That could cut engine hours by 70 percent, which alone is huge. But there’s also the potential to use the electric with the mains to get extra horsepower. We’ve been working on this for five years, and it’ll be a few years more, but it’s coming.”

Note Healey’s use of the word “we” when he talks about developing these systems. Viking isn’t waiting for other companies to announce new diesel-electric tech. Viking is hands-on in the development.

Because after nearly 60 years, that’s exactly what everyone has come to expect of Viking Yachts.

mtu engines keep Viking yachts moving at full throttle

Posted on November 28, 2016

In the luxury sportfishing yacht industry, Viking yachts are making waves. “Building a better boat every day” is the company philosophy—and it exemplifies Viking’s passion towards design, craftsmanship and performance. Below deck of the 70-foot Viking Convertible, mtu engines meet the high expectations of Viking’s founders—and Viking boat owners around the world.

Viking 92 Yacht: Everything You Want To Know

Ian Fortey

The Viking 92 yacht was launched by Viking in 2014 and came with three different models. There was an enclosed bridge, a convertible and a skybridge model available, each with very similar features and specs overall, with the obvious difference being in the deck layout and design.

The yacht is a powerful and sleek sport fishing boat with a lot of great features. At 93 feet it’s a formidable vessel as well that really dominates on the water and cuts an amazing profile with that huge elevated deck that lets you see and be seen from all angles.

How Much Does a 92 Viking Cost?

viking yachts engine

You can expect to pay around $10 million for a Viking 92 yacht but there is some wiggle room there. The model was produced over several years to older versions that have been around for a spell will likely not be as expensive. And, as with any vessel, what features you want included can offer a difference in pricing.

For instance, just as 2022 was coming to a close you could pick up a 2017 Viking 92 enclosed bridge on Yacht World for $9,950,000. A 2020 Skybridge Viking 92 would set you back $11,950,000.

viking yachts engine

Overall condition of the boat and whether it was an enclosed bridge or a skybridge are big factors that can change the overall cost by a million dollars or more. One of the biggest factors that can affect cost is the engine and there are always choices depending on how powerful you want your boat to be.

At 92 feet this is a large boat and a crew would also likely be necessary to keep it running. Along with the crew, fuel costs would be in the tens of thousands of dollars per year. Depending on how often you were likely to take the boat out, yearly costs to maintain the Viking 92 could easily top $500,000. That said, if you have reliable friends or family to serve as the actual crew, you’d be saving yourself some cash but that’s probably not what most people with $10 million yachts are doing.

What are the Viking 92 Specs

viking yachts engine

Though the specs for some older models that date back to 2014 are slightly different in terms of fuel capacity, in general these are the specs for the more recent Viking 92 models. Older ones seemed to have a slightly lower fuel capacity though it’s likely they just upgraded engines at some point.

  • Length Overall – 93 ft. 3 in (28.42 m) making it a larger yacht
  • Beam – 24 ft. 1 in. (7.34 m)
  • Draft – 5 ft. 11 in. (1.80 m)
  • Standard Engines (additional option available which could significantly alter the price) – CAT / C32A 1925 1925 MHP Base with MTU Series 2000 / V 16 M96L 2635 MHP Option
  • Fuel Capacity – 4,015 gals. (15,198 l)
  • Gross Weight – 205,000 lbs. (92,986 kg)
  • Water Capacity – 485 gals. (1,836 liters)
  • Cockpit Area – 238 sq. ft. (22.10 sq. m)

What’s the Viking 92 Interior Like?

viking yachts engine

The interior of the Viking 92 is a real step up from what a lot of fishing boats can offer. But hey, for $10 million what do you expect? The sheer amount of space available is what’s stunning and it has a real vibe of almost being a hotel on the water which is very cool. If you’ve never tried fishing from a boat that cracks 90 feet, the difference is something else. Most of us are probably used to the smaller fishing boats , hell I used to fish on a 12 foot jon boat , so the Viking 92 is the difference between Salisbury steak and filet mignon. This walkthrough gives you a great look at the Viking 92 both inside and out.

The interior of these boats definitely took them above and beyond your typical fishing boat to something a little more luxurious. Some notable features of the interior include:

  • The yacht features five staterooms. Each room has its own private head and a shower.
  • Aft full beam crew quarters with a galley and a head with shower. These quarters have access to the cockpit and feature upper and lower berths
  • The full beam master suite features hotel-like amenities. It’s furnished with a king size bed, a wardrobe, a table, and an extensive head. It even has a walk-in closet.
  • An outside galley and grilling area
  • Propulsion choices include offerings by Caterpillar and MTU
  • A two-level mezzanine and 238-square-foot tournament-ready cockpit with fighting chair
  • The mezzanine offers both rear facing lounge seating, along with a second seating area and a table for al fresco dining.

What is the 92 Viking Fuel Capacity and Range?

viking yachts engine

The Viking 92 has a fuel capacity of 4,015 gallons. This gives the vessel a range of around 1,500 nautical miles based on feedback I’ve seen from previous owners. When you’re out specifically for fishing it’s a decent range to get you where you need to go. These vessels were often used not just for sport fishing but for tournament fishing as well.

What’s the Viking 92 Top Speed?

viking yachts engine

The Viking 92, despite its size, can hit some good speeds. Cruising speed is about 30 knots while she tops out at an impressive 37 knots. This is in part due to how the hull has been designed and shaped as well as some other drag reduction innovations that can help it move more smoothly.

With the MTU Series 2000 / V16 M96L diesel engines, the 92 Viking can hit speeds of 35 knots and reach a cruise speed of 31 knots.

What are Some Other Features of the Viking 92?

viking yachts engine

Owners can add a 43-foot tuna tower. These towers are lightweight but tough and can be tailored to an individual boater’s needs then attached to the yacht without compromising balance, access or practicality.

The enclosed deck features a massive flybridge with room for sofas, cabinets and storage, a wet bar and more. The helm features three Stidd helm chairs and a console with VIPER steering, all your instrumentation and bow thruster controls. At the rear of the bridge is an open aft-deck with a set of aft-helm controls and a three-seater sofa.

viking yachts engine

The option is there for open or closed bridge depending on your likes, as well as custom choices like two-tier cockpit mezzanine or upper seating in the rear. A salon to the front takes up the entire width of the boat and features things like:

  • A U-shaped settee situated to port
  • A large cocktail table
  • Two upholstered chairs set to starboard
  • A 65-inch flat screen TV emerges from the walnut teak cabinetry
  • A galley surrounded by the L-shaped granite counter and complete with appliances, stainless steel countertops and a backsplash.
  • Four bar stools are placed at the bar.
  • A laundry center for use by passengers and a second laundry center for crew use
  • A formal dining area accommodates 6 to 8 people and is found across from the bar with a quartz-topped table that can seat up to 6 people
  • Built-in refrigeration and freezer space
  • Large and ample storage
  • Insulated fish wells below the main cockpit sole.
  • Rod and electronic stowage near the helm station
  • A reinforced entertainment area with another large 50-inch television

viking yachts engine

Options for a Viking 92 could cover an immense range of things from extended warranty cover to things like:

  • Seakeeper SK 35
  • Furuno Omni Sonar
  • LED backlit Lumix white Quartzite countertops
  • MTU Dynamic Positioning with joystick control
  • 2nd anchor windlass system
  • Viking skybridge with Palm Beach Towers hard top
  • Atlantic Marine Electronics
  • Extra fuel capacity- (4) tanks total

Does Viking Still Make the 92?

viking yachts engine

In 2022 Viking retired the 92 model and replaced it with the Viking 90. The reason for this is because of an international emissions mandate from the IMO or International Maritime Organization. This dates back to 2015 and, in order to align with that mandate, Viking has gone back to the drawing board to redesign a yacht that meets these IMO Tier III standards. The aim of this mandate is to reduce nitrogen-oxide emissions 70% more than the Tier II standard for all vessels with a load-line length greater than 78 feet. Tier III targets the gasses that contribute to smog and acid rain, deplete the planet’s ozone layer, and aggravate asthma in humans. All yachts that fall under this category must install Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems in engine rooms that scrub emissions using urea.

The new Viking 90 luxury cruising yacht is very comparable to the 92 and costs about $11.6 million brand new. Again, various options and add on can great change this overall price.

The Bottom Line

The Viking 92 was released in 2014 and typically averages around $10 million. Available as an enclosed bridge, a convertible or a skybridge, this luxury sport fishing yacht offered some amazing features and amenities as well as great performance. From a majestic living room to walk in pantries, private facilities, numerous standard and optional accessories, Viking yachts really set the standard for what a sport fishing motor yacht could offer.

Due to changes in emissions standards, Viking stopped production of the 92 in 2022 and has replaced it with a slightly altered model known as the Viking 90.

Can someone tell me what the square footage of the interior of a ‘92 is? If not the 92’ then the 90’ will do. It will be a game changer for the wife. We are thinking of purchasing one instead of a new summer home. If it doesn’t have the sq. footage she won’t go for it. And, if she doesn’t, I will have to settle for a day fisherman.

Viking Yachts 80 Sky Bridge

Viking 80 Sky Bridge

The Viking 80 Sky Bridge, simply put, is the best of all worlds. The dynamic team at the Viking Yacht Company never ceases to amaze anyone with their spectacular achievements across the entire sportfish range. The positioning of the deckhouse, enclosed bridge, and sky bridge is artfully fused together for an exceptional result that allows owners to enjoy the openness of the ocean, as well as the comfort of the interior without sacrificing the exterior lines.

This 80 Skybridge is a sibling model to the 80 Convertible and 80 Enclosed Bridge .

SI Yachts is one of the oldest Viking dealers in the world and has been in business since 1964. The open air, the unmatched visibility all around, the experience of being high above the water, and all within total control of this magnificent sportfish; this is a captain's dream. The Sky Bridge features a raised centerline helm with two Release Marine chairs for a comfortable ride. All controls and electronics are in easy reach of the captain.

Guests on the Sky Bridge can enjoy the comfortable J-shaped couch forward of the helm that is a wonderful place to sit and enjoy the views. There is also an insulated cooler for cold drinks, freshwater sink, and lots of storage throughout the Sky Bridge so multiple trips up and down to different levels is not necessary.

ENCLOSED BRIDGE

For foul weather fishing or just to escape the heat from the day, the enclosed bridge helm offers an air-conditioned oasis with a view. Ascending into the enclosed bridge from an interior staircase in the salon, guests are greeted with a corner couch portside that can easily seat 5-6 guests. A dining table completes the corner area and is across from a flat screen television.

The interior helm is reminiscent of a spaceship control center. The black wrap-around windshield offers excellent visibility, while also providing a sleek look to the exterior. The captain has multiple large, flatscreen monitors with all electronics and controls installed by Viking subsidiary AME. A single Release Marine helm chair is center for the captain and there are two loveseats nearby, port and starboard.

COCKPIT & MEZZANINE

As with all Viking sportfish, the cockpit leaves nothing to be desired for the serious angler. This generous space measures 217 square feet giving the angler and crew plenty of room to maneuver around each other during an intense battle. Everything needed for offshore tournament fishing is here including livewells, insulated fishboxes, a transom door, and dedicated tackle storage. Even the base of the cockpit compartments are floating, which leaves room for a toe kick for easier access when opening the lids in a sea way. Additionally, there is a dedicated space for a Seakeeper gyro.

The mezzanine provides a comfortable shaded area for watching the action unfold in the cockpit. The overhang blocks the sun while A/C vents provide bursts of cool air to the onlookers. There is a coolbox underneath one of the seats which gives everyone easy access to cold drinks during a longer fight.

SALON & GALLEY

After entering through the actuated door from the cockpit, the salon greets you as if you've entered into a luxury motor yacht. A massive U-shaped couch is portside that can easily seat 7-8 guests and has a large teak dining table centered. An additional, moveable chair can be positioned for an extra guest to join the conversation. The interior walls are lined with large windows and rich, glossy wood for a luxurious ambiance.

Moving forward from the salon seating area is the fully equipped galley and dining table. The dining space is starboard side and can easily fit 6 guests, while the galley bar also has 3 stools that can turn and face the dining area. The galley has beautiful countertops, high-end appliances, and plenty of storage space for supplies. Viking's commitment to quality is evident in every space on board, even down to the smallest details in food preparation. No one wants a hungry crew competing in a tournament! Forward of the galley is the companionway to the lower deck.

LOWER DECK ACCOMMODATIONS

The Viking 80 Sky Bridge features a 5 stateroom, 5 head layout on the lower deck. The master suite is farthest aft and stretches the entire beam of the yacht. The large berth is center and has storage space underneath. There is a sitting area for reading, as well as a vanity space and large closets for storage. The en suite bathroom consists of his-and-hers sinks and walk-in shower.

Two guest bedrooms feature large double beds with en suite bathrooms, closets, televisions, and storage. The fourth and fifth guest staterooms feature over/under bunks. The fifth guest cabin, also dedicated for crew, shares a guest head located in the companionway.

POWER OPTIONS

Engine options on the Viking 80 SB range from 1925MHP up to 2635MHP for those that want more power. The standard base engine package includes the Caterpillar C-32A 1925MHP engines that will give the 80 a nice cruising speed. CAT C-32B 2025MHP is the next step up for owners that want the Caterpillar brand.

Viking is also offering the MTU Series 2000 V12 or V16 engines. The V12 is a 2002MHP option, while the V16 is the largest engine option at 2635MHP's.

Viking 76 Convertible – Boat Review

  • By Dean Travis Clarke
  • Updated: April 12, 2010

0510boats_viking368

Want a fast, maneuverable sport-fishing convertible that’s large enough and has enough range to take you far afield? The Viking 76 Convertible accommodates all those requirements while cradling you and your guests in sybaritic comfort.

Performance Seas outside Lake Worth Inlet on Florida’s Atlantic coast proved larger than they seemed from the Viking 76 flybridge. To go slow enough with twin 2,400 hp MTU diesels, the 76 must either be in trolling-valve mode or idle along on one engine.

I advanced the throttles, noting a barely discernable low rumble rather than a loud exhaust noise. It rose gently onto plane with virtually no bow rise; owners can thank the somewhat flatter deadrise, which produces greater lift and also accounts for the boat’s rock-solid drifting attributes.

With three trim tabs across the transom, you can run the boat flat into a head sea, but the bow can become extremely proud when running down-sea. And those tabs automatically retract the moment you shift into reverse, helping prevent you from tearing them off when backing hard.

Viking’s VIPER steering system controls the rudders independently and sets limits according to speed. We reversed course in less than three boat lengths while running at 32 knots.

A 7-knot trolling speed exhibited such a clean wake that you might as well not be moving. Running at 35 knots into a four-foot, wind-blown sea proved a nonevent. Backing down at 7 knots, I couldn’t get water into the cockpit and still maintained complete control.

Interior It seems that every subsequent Viking I see comes with more curves – every line boasts a beautiful radius flow.

Forward of the well-equipped galley, you’ll find a pantry so big that it could easily double as an office or even another stateroom. Opposite to starboard, a slightly smaller pantry outboard holds all of the audio/visual equipment.

Viking instituted a new island design in the galley that allows passage on both sides. A dishwasher, trash compactor, numerous Sub-Zero under-counter refrigerator/freezer drawers, stove and oven round out the impressive galley.

And this boat offers up plenty of space for you and all your friends – the 76 features a five-stateroom layout with a full-beam master stateroom.

The remarkably large starboard crew’s quarters comes with a head that would make many owners jealous. There’s another cabin with an island double berth on centerline in the forepeak that boasts an extraordinary eight feet of headroom.

Cockpit A new Release contour fighting chair commands attention in the center of the cockpit. The owner normally dictates the layout of boxes and equipment in the cockpit area, but this factory boat sported remarkably high mezzanine seats housing loads of storage, plus several deep freezes.

Viking added a very effective air-conditioning system with an independent compressor that dumps cool air out of a soffit over the mezzanine seating.

Interestingly, all the fish boxes lift out of the deck, affording incredible under-deck access and easy cleaning. Additionally, the glossy, centerline lazarette offers more space than usual thanks to the lack of tie bars on Viking’s proprietary steering system.

Engine Room Step into the engine compartment and enjoy an amazing seven feet of headroom (tall guys like myself are especially appreciative) and the completely silent Delta-T air-handling systems. Viking puts all of the noisemaking machinery outboard or against the aft bulkhead. Nothing but quiet machinery abuts the forward bulkhead.

Loyal readers know how I dwell on safety systems offshore. Viking vastly improved upon its crash-valve bilge-pump setup by going to a high-speed, hydraulic pump system with controls set at the base of the engine-room ladder. There are water pickups in every section of the boat – rather than just in the engine compartment – allowing you to quickly and easily select one or more sections for these high-speed hydraulic crash pumps to drain.

Flybridge The triple helm seats on the bridge allow more than acceptable passage space behind, between and alongside. However, I would most definitely install the optional footrests on the companion seats, both for a place to rest your feet while seated as well as to facilitate climbing up into them.

A truly mammoth deep freeze on the forward side of the console holds food for a month of cruising. I also like that you needn’t keep the big dashboard covers open to access the electronics suite. One of the main proponents of the Maretron OctoPlex power distribution system, Viking uses this digital system to manage anything and everything electrical aboard the entire boat – from virtually anywhere on board. It even allows you to move fuel forward if you need to dock in a shallow zone, creating an extra four or five inches of draft. It also shaves off about a thousand pounds of wire from the boat’s displacement.

I am not the biggest fan of tuna towers, but I admit that this one made by Palm Beach Towers represents one of the most secure-feeling towers I’ve ever encountered. You can climb up without first vaulting over the rail of the flybridge, and you don’t have to crawl on your hands and knees to enter the tower control station.

Construction Viking continues in its lighter yet stronger quest by sandwiching balsa coring between layers of multidirectional fiberglass and then vacuum-bagging the whole shebang for optimum glass-to-resin ratios and zero voids. All painted surfaces get coated with Awlgrip, except for the black metallic mask across the front of the brow, which is coated with Alexseal.

A far cry from the wooden 37 footers of yesteryear, the Viking 90 is a design and engineering feat and example of how to compress a megayacht into 90' while maintaining its fishing superiority. The owners of these yachts are not just serious anglers, they are also set on including friends and family in broad-reaching travel plans.
