Latest: British tech giant Mike Lynch and Morgan Stanley chairman Jonathan Bloomer among the missing in Bayesian sinking disaster
According to the BBC, Morgan Stanley's chairman Jonathan Bloomer is among the six people missing after the 56-metre Perini Navi sailing yacht Bayesian capsized and sunk off the coast of Palermo, Italy yesterday (19 August). The other missing individuals are:
- British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, once dubbed 'Britain's Bill Gates'
- Lynch's 18-year-old daughter Hannah
- Judy Bloomer, wife of Morgan Stanley chairman
- Chris Morvillo, a lawyer working for London-based law firm Clifford Chance
One person has been confirmed dead, according to the Italian Port Authority.
It is understood that the yacht was being used to celebrate Lynch's recent victory in a 13-year £8bn fraud acquittal.
Live updates
- A search and rescue is currently underway for six people missing in the waters off Palermo on the Italian island of Sicily.
- Mike Lynch, a British technology entrepreneur who co-founded Autonomy Corporation and founded Invoke Capital, is among the missing.
- Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, and a one-year-old child are among fifteen people who were rescued.
- The BBC has reported that the Palermo Coastguard has confirmed the body that has been recovered is that of the yacht's chef.
- Another sailing vessel in the area, the 42-metre Sir Robert Baden Powell , is understood to have stepped in to offer assistance in the initial rescue.
- Divers have been able to reach Bayesian' s sunken hull, which lies at 45 metres of depth about half a mile from the coast. The yacht had the largest aluminium masts of any sailing yacht on the water.
- Eyewitnesses in the area reported "hurricane" conditions off the coast but local weather websites did not indicate any severe squall, which suggests that the weather event was not forecast.
- At around 5am local time on 19 August, Bayesian was hit by bad weather and sunk. The sailing yacht was anchored or idle at the time of the incident.
Built in Italy by renowned builder Perini Navi and delivered in 2008, the yacht's naval architecture was developed by Ron Holland Design while the interior design is by Rémi Tessier . She was formerly known as Salute and was last refitted in 2016. She was listed for sale earlier this year, according to BOATPro . The yacht had accommodation for nine guests and 12 crew.
BOAT International will update the story as it develops.

Mike Lynch's yacht was registered in wife Angela Bacares' name at the time of sinking
B ritish entrepreneur Mike Lynch is still missing following the capsizing the yacht he was on near Sicily , in a case that has taken a bizarre twist as his recent co-defendant in a fraud trial died just two days ago .
While the billionaire has yet to be found, at least one person is confirmed dead from the accident while six are reported missing. Fifteen have been rescued, including Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares.
The luxury yacht "suddenly sank" from what's thought to have been "terrible weather conditions", according to NBC. Lynch, 59, is the co-creator of the software corporation Autonomy and established Invoke Capital.

Who owned the Bayesian?
The yacht is legally owned by Lynch's wife Bacares, Forbes reported. It was built in Italy in 2008 by renowned boat builder Perini Navi.
BOAT International reports the yacht's naval architecture was developed by Ron Holland Design while the interior design is by Remi Tessier. It was originally known as Salute until 2016 when it was retrofitted and renamed Bayesian.

When it comes to length, Bayesian is in the top 5 percent in the world. It can accommodate up to 12 guests in 6 staterooms, and it has room for 9 crew members.
It is also one of the world's tallest, with a single mast reaching 75 meters.
How much is the yacht 'The Bayesian' worth?
The Sun reports the 56-meter sailing yacht, called Bayesian, is worth £14 million, about $18 million. The average cost to buy a super yacht, which is a yacht between 37 to 60 meters, starts at about $10 million, according to Galati Yacht Sales.
Forbes said the cost to charter the Bayesian is $215,000 for one week. The yacht was listed for sale earlier this year, though it is no longer, according to BOAT International.

The Netherlands has a temperate maritime climate. The average maximum temperature in summer is 20 degrees Celsius, with days and periods of 25 and even 30 degrees Celsius possible. If it rains, it doesn't last long: the cool winds off the coast quickly blow the clouds away.
The ideal sailing season is from May to September.
As one of the world's leading countries for water sports, the Netherlands has a particularly perfect infrastructure for yachts. In 136 very good marinas, with clean showers and toilets, as well as shore power connections for yachts, most with restaurants and nautical shops, yachtsmen will find everything they need for a good holiday.
The lateral "A" buoy system also applies in the Netherlands: channels as well as underwater shallows and other obstacles are well marked with buoys at all times.
A quarter of the surface of the Netherlands lies below the level of the North Sea. This forced the Dutch to build sustainable dikes, sea locks and storm surge defences to protect themselves and even to reclaim new fertile land from the sea. That is why the Dutch are today world leaders in hydraulic engineering.
Sailing in Holland does not mean bays, anchoring, diving and barbecues. Sailing in Holland is a completely different and very interesting new experience.
Easy : Sail short distances on the Ijsselmeer from one picturesque town to another, enjoying an overnight mooring in the middle of historic city centres (Hindeloopen, Enkhuizen, Hoorn, Volendam, Medemblik...).
Middle : Sail through the lock of the final barrage into the Waddenzee. There, the tides and their currents play an important role in planning the correct navigation route. The channels are very well marked with red and green buoys of the late-normal "A" system. Harlingen (historic harbour) and the islands of Terschelling, Vlieland and Texel, with their good marinas and long sandy beaches, are definitely worth a visit.
Demanding : it is a journey across the North Sea from, for example, Vlieland/Terschelling to Texel, between the islands and the traffic separation zone, and further along the coast to IJmuiden, where you pass together with the large cargo ships through the huge lock system to the "Noordzeekanaal". From there, 25 km along the canal, past the seaports to the marina "Sixhaven" directly in the city centre of Amsterdam, there is nothing closer. From there we continue directly to the south of the Ijsselmeer and return to the charter base in Lemmer.
The Netherlands offers 3 sailing regions: Ijsselmeer, Wadden Sea (Waddenzee) and North Sea.
The Ijsselmeer
was historically a large bulge in the North Sea called the Zuiderzee. In the past, cargo sailors sailed from the harbours in this bay to Cape Hoorn, which was named after a captain from the town of Hoorn on the Ijsselmeer.
Repeatedly affected by devastating storm surges, it was decided in 1927 to completely separate the Zuiderzee from the North Sea by building a 32 km long dike. The objectives were coastal protection and increased land reclamation, which were impressively achieved. The closing dike has two locks used by inland vessels and yachts to/from the Wadden Sea and the North Sea.
The area now called Ijsselmeer is an inland and tideless sea. Therefore, it is at the same time a perfect sailing area without any special requirements.
Our charter base is located in Lemmer on the east side of the Ijsselmeer, a strategic starting point in all directions.
The Wadden Sea (Waddenzee - a UNESCO World Heritage Site)
stretches between the offshore islands from Texel to Schiermonnikoog (formerly part of the mainland) and today's coasts. Here the tides have an influence, and there are areas that dry out at low tide. Well buoyed routes allow for safe navigation as long as marker buoys are maintained.
The North Sea
The Netherlands has 451 km of North Sea coastline from the island of Schiermonnikoog in the east to the Belgian border in the south. Traffic separation zones off the coast regulate cargo ship traffic in the English Channel in separate lanes in a north-east and south-west direction. This makes it possible to navigate close to the coast without the danger of large ships. The tidal range is approximately 1.50-2.50 m, the tidal current up to 2.3 kn, between the islands also somewhat more. With the tidal currents you have a fast trip.
Our charter company in the Netherlands was founded 25 years ago and is today considered to be one of the largest suppliers of high quality and well maintained yachts.

Not all sailing licences of non-EU citizens are recognised in the Netherlands. Please send us a copy of your sailing licence with your charter application. We will check the validity with the charter base in advance.
We strongly recommend that you hire a local skipper for your planned charter. He speaks the local language and in any case also English. The skipper knows the local conditions, recommends suitable routes taking into account weather and wind forecasts. He knows the best marinas and books moorings for the night, helps with restaurant reservations, shopping and much more. For the skipper, always consider a separate cabin on board.
Short (on the Ijsselmeer), medium (Ijsselmeer/Wadden Sea), long and very long routes - e.g. Vlieland-Ijmuiden - can be combined as desired. Here you will find an international distance calculator .
(Hint: move the map with the mouse pointer in the centre to the destination area).

What is the best time of year for a yacht charter in the Netherlands?
The Netherlands has a maritime climate which means that there is rainfall throughout the entire year however, for the warmest weather, it’s best to rent a yacht in the Netherlands during the summer months when you’ll have average highs of 21°C. Of course, June to August is the high tourist season in the Netherlands meaning more expensive prices and large crowds. If you want to avoid this, the month of May is a nice time to visit, and it’s also the end of tulip season which means that it will not only be warm, but it will be very beautiful! The best part? You’ll also get better deals on Netherlands yacht rentals!
Where can I sail in the Netherlands with my yacht rental?
The Netherlands may be small in size, but it sure packs a punch with its abundance of stunning coastal destinations. From golden sand beaches to rugged cliffs, there’s something for everyone here. Here are some of our favourite places to visit on a boat charter in the Netherlands.
- Texel Island: This popular destination is located off the coast of North Holland and it has over 95 kilometres of coastline full of hidden coves and bays that are perfect for sailing. If you’re feeling adventurous, then why not explore further afield and visit one of the other Wadden Islands such as Vlieland or Terschelling?
- Amsterdam: The capital city of the Netherlands and also the most populous is also a great place to sail! Navigate the intricate waterways and canals in the city which are so iconic, they are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. If you have time, take a day trip to the fishing village Volendam or the former island of Marken, and if you fancy sport you can take part in one of Amsterdam's many sailing regattas.
- Zeeland Province: If you want some peace and seclusion when sailing in the Netherlands then make sure you check out Zeeland province. Here you'll find plenty of quiet bays and coves where you can sail away from any crowds. Plus, Zeeland boasts some beautiful beaches too so make sure you get your toes sandy while you're here!
- Wadden Sea: Sail along this stretch of shallow water, situated between the Netherlands and Denmark. The Wadden Sea is home to some of the best windsurfing and kitesurfing in the country and is also a great place for wildlife watching, with seals, porpoises and dolphins all regularly spotted offshore.
Should I have a skipper on board my Netherlands boat charter?
Having a skipper present on board your Netherlands yacht rental is always a good idea, and will add a lot of value to your holiday. Skippers are licenced professionals that will handle all of the logistics on the water such as navigating, anchoring and docking the vessel. This is a great asset because you can spend less time sailing the boat, and more time with the ones you love. The other great advantage to having a skipper on board is that they are usually locals, so they can give you advice about what to do, and help you see everything on your sailing itinerary, and more.
For smooth sailing and a customised holiday with an all-inclusive feel, choose a skippered vessel!
What type of boat should I choose for my yacht rental in the Netherlands?
When choosing a vessel for your yacht rental in the Netherlands, you have to think about how much time you’ll be spending on board. For shorter holidays, you won’t need more than a daily charter, such as a RIB or motorboat, since you won’t be sleeping on the vessel. For a longer holiday, you might prefer a vessel that is fully equipped with amenities such as a kitchen, cabin and bathroom. Weekly charters like catamarans are a great option for a more luxurious holiday, and they will have everything you need to live comfortably on board. For a traditional Dutch experience, houseboats are the best option, and they are also great for a family holiday of a week or more.

Where can I sail on a boat rental in the Netherlands?
The Netherlands is known for its wooden clogs, cheese and lots of canals! With a mix of intriguing colors, scents and folklore, this destination is an ideal vacation destination for those seeking relaxation, culture, tradition and contact with nature.
Boating holidays in Holland are a great way to enjoy the Dutch waterways. Whether you want to stay on Dutch boats going through the canals or fancy a sailing yacht in the lake, there is something for everyone.
The Netherlands is equipped with fantastic sailing areas and an extensive water network, the most popular of which are located in Friesland and North Holland. Chartering a boat in Holland can start from Friesland. Sail across the Friesian lakes and explore the province’s numerous rivers and canals from a different perspective.
One possible destination could be the city of Sneek, where every Saturday in August, the so-called “Sneekweek” starts. This week, everything revolves around sailing competitions in various categories that take place on the Sneekermeet.
Why not also explore IJssel River and Markermeer Lake and their beautiful harbor towns? Then head for Enkhuizen, Hoorn and Lemmer with your boat and enjoy delicious Dutch crabs or an excellent fish sandwich directly in the harbor. Since there are no significant currents on the IJsselmeer and there is enough space, a boat charter in Holland is always a good choice, especially in the summer months!
Moving to the southwest of the Netherlands, the province of Zeeland is a great option for you! Holland houseboat rentals in Zeeland mean you can go on adventurous sailing trips. There you can expect tides, currents (especially on the Oosterschelde) and generally more sailing traffic. Do you prefer it a little more quiet? Sail towards the estuaries and with a little luck you will find seals and porpoises.
In the south of Holland, there is the Green Heart. A natural landscape surrounded by the Randstad (The Hague, Rotterdam, Utrecht and Amsterdam) and is great for water sports and recreational activities like cycling and hiking. The area holds numerous beautiful landscapes, waters and cities for you to enjoy. The Green Heart can be divided into several areas. Each of those areas has its own unique character and charm such as De Hollandse Waarden.
In short, when you rent a boat in South Holland, you can combine the colorful big city flair with the tranquility of the Green Heart.

Yacht charter Netherlands
The IJsselmeer and the Frisian seas, all popular waters for sailing, can be easily reached from our yacht charter base at Marina Lelystad in the Netherlands. A typical flat landscape with lots of greenery, long dune beaches and nice little fishing villages in Dutch style await you. Windmills dominate the landscape and during a sailing trip in spring you can view the typical Dutch tulip fields from the water. The capital Amsterdam is also worth a visit and is easily accessible with a yacht charter in Holland.
Leisurely sailing in the Netherlands
On the Marker Sea and the IJsselmeer you can still feel the rough Zuiderzee, as it used to be called. There are almost always very good wind conditions for sailing in the Netherlands . From Lelystad, the crossing to North Holland on the North Sea can be done in one day.
Rent a sailboat in Holland and experience the vastness of the IJsselmeer
If you rent a sailing boat in the Netherlands , you can explore the Markermeer, the IJsselmeer and, via the North Holland Route, the Frisian islands of Texel, Vlieland and Terschelling. The IJsselmeer as well as the Markermeer is a body of water closed off by dikes and thus protected. Here, even less experienced sailors or families can start a sailing trip in the North Sea.
The towns bordering the inland waterway are accessible via a well-developed waterway network. Medemblik in North Netherlands invites you to take a stroll through the medieval town centre. Nature lovers can visit the Nieuw Land National Park right next to our yacht charter in the Netherlands. It borders on the Marker Sea.
The Marker Sea is surrounded by towns and villages. On land, sailors will find pubs, restaurants, cafés, and modern and historic town centres. The variety of options from shopping to sightseeing fulfils every holiday wish. The highlight is of course the metropolis, Amsterdam, which can be reached from our base in Lelystad in just a few nautical miles through the Mark Sea. From the Amsterdam Marina or the Sixt Harbour, it is only a stone's throw by ferry to the centre of the capital.
Sailing the Frisian Seas in the Netherlands
The IJsselmeer reaches as far north as the province of Friesland. So, with a yacht charter from Lelystad in the Netherlands, you can visit four towns of the "Frisian Eleven": Stavoren, Hindeloopen, Workum and Harlingen. The eleven towns in Friesland are the places that already had city rights in the Middle Ages, all old colonial towns that you can include in your yacht charter.
During a sailing trip from our yacht charter base in the Netherlands, you can visit numerous historic harbour towns and charming fishing villages.
In the Netherlands, the boat is an indispensable part of everyday life. Sailors can look forward to cosy harbours and perfect sailing conditions.

Location description
From marina Lelystad Haven it goes in south-west direction to Amsterdam. Here we moor either in Six Haven or in Marina Amsterdam and spend 1 to 2 days in Amsterdam down to your‘ s whim.
Then we lock through Oranje Sluis and the North Sea Canal to IJmuiden. Here we spend the night in the Marina IJmuiden or lock the same or the next day with the accumulating water on to the North Sea island of Texel (50sm, approx. 5 h +, with accumulating water up to 3 knots faster!)
We spend the night in the Qudeschild marina in Texel. It is recommended to rent a bike and explore the island with its nice little places. The long sandy beach on the North Sea coast of the island is especially beautiful! Here in the marina Qudeschild you can spend a second night due to manifold amenities in the area. A special tip for nature lovers or families with children is a visit to the seals sanctuary in the Ecomare Nature Museum on Californiaweg near the North Sea coast halfway along the island.
With accumulating water we reach the lock Kornerderzand. Here we lock back into the IJsselmeer with the destination Hindeloopen or Stavoren.
From here you can set your course towards Enkhuizen the next day. Enkhuizen is an attractive and diverse shopping city. The cozy city center offers various small and large shops as well as a number of creative markets. With old-fashioned shops and modern boutiques as well as numerous cafes, shopping here makes fun.
Then we sail through the Markermeer back to Lelystad, past the artificially created group of islands of the Marker Wadden, a beautiful nature reserve.
The capital of the province of Flevoland is named after the builder of the final dike, Cornelis Lely. The place was built on a polder about 5 m below sea level. Lelystad is considered a green garden city with modern architecture. We recommend a visit to the nearby Batavia shipyard where historical wooden ships are reproduced. At the port of Lelystad, the almost 30 km long bank towards Enkhuizen begins behind the lock. When everything was still a North Sea bay in the past, the heavily loaded ships sailed from here with their treasures from Asia and brought wealth to the cities.
Welcome to the canal city. Water has always shaped life in Amsterdam. Since its foundation around 700 years ago, people have come from all over the world to settle here. Over time, the city became a melting pot of cultures. The Amsterdam canal belt with its countless colorful houseboats is part of the Unesco World Heritage Amsterdam, Holland's secret capital, Venice of the north, red light district and bicycle metropolis, a city where you have to stay once in your life.
IJmuiden is a major seaport in the Netherlands. The city owes its foundation and its name (mouth) to the construction of the North Sea Canal, which connects the city and the port of Amsterdam directly with the North Sea. Coming from Amsterdam at the end of the North Sea Canal, IJmuiden is an important junction in shipping and is often referred to as the offshore terminal of Amsterdam. IJmuiden is also Holland's largest fishing port. Early in the morning, fish auctions in the action halls offer the opportunity to experience Holland off the beaten track. Getting up early is rewarded with the view of the beautiful lighthouse in the morning light. Other sights of IJmuiden are the four locks, of which the Noordersluis, with a length of 400 m, is the largest in Europe.
Texel is the largest of the five Frisian islands in the Wadden Sea. It is 15 km long and 9 km wide. The flat island scores with its seemingly endless sandy beaches on the west coast. The lovely small towns and nature reserves as well as the seals sanctuary can be explored by bike. Typical for the island are the thatched, listed “Gulf houses” that serve as sheep stables.
Hindeloopen
Hindeloopen was once one of the wealthiest port cities in Friesland and has a long maritime tradition. With its old cobblestone streets, it is considered one of the most beautiful small towns in Europe. Life runs a bit slower here and you feel like you are in a picturesque village from a fairy tale book.
Stavoren is the oldest city in Friesland. The Hanseatic city is one of the largest leisure harbors. The name Stavoren is closely related to the type of ship “Staverse Jol”, which was once used for fishing by the Anchovies. Today, this form of ship, with an onion-shaped bow, long keel with little draft, is still used on robust steel cruisers.
In Enkhuizen at the harbor, old merchant and warehouse buildings provide a picturesque backdrop. Enkhuizen was in the 17th century, in the "Golden Century", the richest and most powerful city on the Zuiderzee and is the most beautifully preserved old town on the IJsselmeer. The Zuiderzee Museum in the old packing house is interesting. It provides an almost complete insight into the history of the Zuiderzee, the fight against the water, shipping, shipbuilding, fishing, art and commerce.
