LADY J for sale

LADY J is a classic Palmer Johnson measuring 142’ (43m). She has undergone continual upgrades since her 1997 launch, the most notable in 2021, which brought new Caterpillar C32 engines and ZF transmissions. The yacht’s meticulous refit schedule has ensured she is kept in excellent condition. She is ready to exceed the expectations of her new owners. For someone looking for a yacht with charter potential, LADY J boasts an outstanding charter history with an excellent reputation and expectation for repeat guests. Her full suite of water toys, clever accommodation layout and vast deck spaces make her a versatile yacht for both private use and charter.

This 142’ tri-deck yacht was built with expert craftsmanship and extraordinary standards. As guests enter the main salon, they will notice the beautiful Cuban mahogany paneling that gives the space a warm and welcoming ambiance while natural and recessed lighting illuminates the room; this attention to detail is also carried out in the skylounge. A 10-person formal dining table is situated separately from the main salon for an intimate feel and features a built-in wine cabinet. LADY J’s furnishings offer a traditional feel that never goes out of style.

LADY J welcomes up to 12 guests in the comfort of five well-appointed staterooms. The full-beam master suite is an intimate haven dedicated to privacy and leisure. Upon entering the space through the owner’s office, you will find a desk, hanging lockers and a small drinks refrigerator. Continuing forward is the master stateroom featuring a king-size bed, large sofa and vanity. The space is timeless, with bookshelves and plenty of soft lighting. The marble guest foyer leads to LADY J’s four additional staterooms down a spiral staircase. The forward cabins are identical with twin berths and trundles. The guest cabin to starboard provides service access to the crew area. The other two identical cabins are located further aft, each with queen-size berths. LADY J’s five crew cabins welcome nine crewmembers onboard. The yacht’s stateroom layout is perfect for friends and multi-generational families.

The skylounge aft showcases an oversized deck with a table for 10 that welcomes comfortably shaded alfresco dining. Settees around the edge of the deck provide generous seating for enjoying cocktails before dinner, surrounded by the passing scenery. As guests head up to the sundeck, they are greeted with sunbeds, lounge chairs, a bar and a large Jacuzzi. This is the entertainment hub of LADY J offering endless possibilities for fun while underway. When at anchor, guests can take advantage of LADY J’s impressive collection of water toys fit for all ages.

Lady J is the culmination of a lot of love, labor, and effort, put in to what was planned to be a forever Cruising Yacht. However, as life changes, and crew (ie: read as adult kids with their kids) scattered to the 4 corners and their own lives, the owners have found she is more boat than they really need. The “recent Work Done list” will show that they did most of the heavy lifting, and you can be the benefactor of this labor of love. Well maintained by current owners, she is a two stateroom design with a spacious V-berth with its own En-suite head, and shower. The Master suite is massive. With lots of beautiful Solid Teak cabinets, 3 closets, and drawers. The quality, and quantity of beautiful teak within Lady J is very hard to find now. The Master suites giant King bed makes sleeping, well, a dream.  An En-suite head, and shower/bathtub are private to the Master suite. An amazing feature is an aft entry/exit door port side from the master to the aft cockpit. This is a great safety and convenient access feature. Access to the Aft upper deck by a solidly built ladder to starboard. Boarding Lady J is also extremely easy. With a spacious swim step at dock level, going to a wide cockpit aft, makes boarding with armloads of provisions and groceries a breeze.

Galley and Built in Dinette is forward of the salon and lower level, with a builtin microwave, electric stove, large working oven, and refrigerator, all easily accessed on the port side. The dining settee, recently fully recovered with great fabric and new easy clean sidewall vinyl  is starboard of the galley. The Salon has an expansive custom couch with the same fabric as the dinette, has storage below the cushions. Aft is an expansive upper fully enclosed ‘California Deck' as it’s called, has custom teak furniture. This space makes for wonderful dockside and cruising comfort, and entertaining, as well as a fantastic layout for dock parties. Easily sleep 7, or 8, with room for more if using the aft deck. An amazing family boat. And as a potential Liveaboard, this is the yacht that can provide a home, and then pull away from the dock and really go places! She was moved on her own hull from Southern California to Blaine, WA in 2021, and has cruised the San Juan and Gulf Islands as recently as September 2023. Dual Detroit 6v92TA Turbo Diesel engines give stability and power when needed. With two generators, its possible to get the extra power when needed from the 15KW main, or the 8Kw auxiliary generator. 

This is truly an outstanding boat for the next owner. With a 12 month sublet slip immediately available after purchase in Blaine Washington, this will give the new owners time to enjoy being literally right next door to Canada, and amazing access to the Canadian Gulf Islands. Leave Blaine Marina, and within 2.5 hours you can be checked in to Canadian Customs, and on the Dock at Poets Cove on Pender Island. Vancouver Marina is only 50 miles coastwise to the north, and the Sunshine cost just above that. AND, with - 350 feet of brand new bbb 3/8” Peerless (made in U.S.A) chain, plus 150 feet of 3 strand braided rope, anchoring at Reid Harbor, (on Stuart Island, in the USA San Juan Islands) is a fantastic start to your cruising trips. Jarryd Vermaak

Captain Jarryd was born in South Africa. He grew up in Durban spending his days on the beaches with his friends. Jarryd studied Marketing and advertising after school while working for a successful restaurant/cocktail bar opening new franchises around South Africa. Jarryd entered the yachting world in 2009 as deckhand onboard a 188’ Feadship. Since entering the wonderful world of luxury yachting, he has crossed the Atlantic 5 times and cruised many different waters including the Mediterranean, Caribbean, US East coast and the Gulf of Mexico. His hard work, attention to detail and growing knowledge, along with strong communication and entrepreneurship skills allowed him to work his way up to Captain of very busy private and Charter programs. Jarryd first joined LADY J in 2015. His longevity and charter experience have allowed him to hone his skills to provide a five-star yacht program and experience to guests every time. He is very team and guest focused. He has a lively bubbly personality and gets on with all guests, always sharing a joke or two, making for a memorable charter experience that guests won’t ever forget. In his free time, Jarryd enjoys diving, water sports, traveling, and reading.

Paul Shelton

1st Officer

Paul was born in Durban, South Africa and grew up on the beach front surfing. In 2009 he moved to London and worked on the London underground as a Electricians mate before moving to the mediterranean to start his yachting career. Paul started working on classic sailing yachts and spent five years on a 109-year-old classic schooner. While onboard, Paul took part in over twenty classic sailing regattas in the mediterranean and Caribbean. Since then, he has worked on both sailing and motor yachts and worked his way up from deckhand to first officer. Paul had spent most of his yachting career in the Mediterranean but recently wanted to spend some time in America, which led him to Lady J. During his free time, he enjoys playing rugby, surfing and more recently took up learning to play golf.

Michael Bishop

Chief Engineer (Rotation)

“Mikey” was born in Durban, South Africa where he grew up surrounded by water and was an avid surfer. He worked as a mixologist in cocktail bars in Durban before leaving to work as a Mechanical Mate for the London Underground Railway. After five years in London, he missed the ocean and moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida to begin his career in yachting. He began working as a deck hand, quickly finding his way to the engine room where he excelled. Nine years later he is an extremely talented engineer who plans to continue his education and attend more engineering courses during his free time. He currently resides in Mallorca, Spain with his beautiful wife and baby boy. Mikey considers himself lucky to work on a rotation schedule onboard Lady J so that he can also spend time with his family at home, where they enjoy hiking, swimming, reading, and surfing.

Matthew Stallard

Matt is from Winchester, Virginia in the Blue Ridge Mountains. He grew up sailing in the Chesapeake Bay and sport fishing in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. After earning a degree in economics from the College of Charleston, South Carolina he decided to follow his love for the ocean and pursue a career at sea. He has been onboard yachts for 15 years. When not turning wrenches, Matt enjoys being in the mountains hiking and camping, or on the water paddling and fishing.

Anthony Horner

Anthony grew up on the Mississippi river in Driftless region of South West Wisconsin. He attended the University of Wisconsin, Stevens Point, where he obtained his bachelor’s degree in philosophy. During his time in University, he studied abroad in France where he volunteered on an organic farm. One thing led to another and next thing he was training in Gastronomy in France in an intensive culinary program focused on Gastronomic French Cuisine and Pastry, followed by an even more intensive internship. Anthony then travelled through Central America and Thailand. While he was traveling in Thailand he acquired his Thai cuisine certification. After a few years of travel he returned to the United States, and worked in a Spanish Tapas-Style Restaurant in Miami, which ultimately introduced him to find a culinary career in the wonderful world of luxury private yacht charters. While not whipping up culinary delights in the Lady J galley, Anthony enjoys training for Olympic distance triathlons, swimming, cycling, reading fantasy fiction and playing trombone and bass guitar. While Anthony considers himself a Jack of all trades in the galley, his strength lies in Mediterranean, Thai and Central American Cuisine. With his well-rounded culinary expertise, Anthony intends to wow guests with his international flavours.

Esperanza Cabada

Esperanza was born and raised in Venezuela. Shortly after finishing her BA in Tourism, she moved to London to improve her English and started her career in hospitality at the grand Hotel St Pancras Renaissance where she was part of the banquet and conference team. From London, Essie moved to the Hotel Artz in Barcelona to keep learning and growing. Seeking new challenges, she then moved to Germany, where she absorbed the German culture, language and way of work; efficient, fast and always professional. After 5 years in Germany, Essie decided to move to St Maarten where she found the perfect blend, her passion for service mixed with warm weather and sunny places. She has been working on Sail and Motor yachts since 2016.

Gillian Giachinta

Gillian was raised in Leesburg, Virginia, developing a love for the outdoors, spending summers at the lake and winters skiing. She then attended the University of Tampa and obtained a degree in Biology. Her curiosity for the world and passion for the ocean led her to attend a Semester at Sea, where she travelled to multiple countries within Asia, Africa, and Europe while taking courses on the ship. This program sparked her love for living on the water and she knew she wanted to pursue a career at sea. Given her waitressing experience and adventurous, outgoing personality, yachting was an obvious avenue. Gillian is passionate about creating memorable experiences for others as they explore the world, making her a great fit for Lady J.

Okwa Groenewald

Stewardess & Divemaster

Okwa was born in Durban, SA. She started working in hospitality as a teenager and worked her way up to some of the best restaurants in the country. After school she went over to the states as an au pair and enjoyed traveling and trying new things. She started working on yachts in 2016. Along the way Okwa fell in love with painting, slacklining, snorkeling, fishing, and diving. She spent some time in Honduras chasing her love of diving and is currently the divemaster on board. She holds a coral watch specialty and hopes to one day contribute to coral restoration and reef health.

Tyler Franks

Tyler was born in Memphis, Tennessee. He grew up playing on his high school basketball and golf team. Tyler then moved to Knoxville where he attended the University of Tennessee to study marketing. During his time there, he started up his own valet company which became very successful and is still going strong to this day. Throughout his life, Tyler has been boating on lakes all through Tennessee. Since then, he has been pursuing a boating career which brought him down to Fort Lauderdale, and eventually onboard Lady J. During his spare time Tyler enjoys playing golf, basketball, fishing, and spikeball on the beach.

Carel De Beer

Born in Cape Town, South Africa where he grew up playing rugby and loved the outdoors, Carel has always loved being near the ocean. He started his yachting career as soon as he finished high school and found his way traveling to the states to work on yachts. He has worked and traveled in the Bahamas for 6 months before joining Lady J. During his spare time, he enjoys traveling, playing golf, fishing, diving, swimming and being active in the gym.

LADY J features

Luxury charter yacht LADY J underwent an extensive refit in 2016 and is the perfect yacht for thrill-seekers with the bonus of an extremely well-stocked onboard toy box. With a cruising speed of 12 knots plus an ultra-modern stabilisation system, smooth sailing comes as standard aboard this luxurious yacht.

With five stylish ensuite staterooms, LADY J has overnight accommodation for up to 12 guests. Located on the main deck, LADY J’s superb full-beam master suite is accessed via a private office and opens into His & Hers ensuites with a spa bath and shower.

Situated on the lower deck, LADY J’s luxurious guest accommodation is made up of two double and two twin cabins. Uniquely flexible, the twin cabins can be converted to doubles and are also equipped with a trundle bed for younger guests. 

LADY J’s main living area is a vast open-plan salon situated on the main deck. The lounge area is equipped with a full entertainment center. Separated from the lounge area by a wooden screen, the salon opens into LADY J’s delightful formal dining area. Featuring a table for 10.

On the upper deck, LADY J has a spacious skylounge with a lounge area and bar. Designed for socialising, the skylounge has an entertainment center with a retractable plasma TV plus a games table.

On the aft deck, a covered dining area is set up for al fresco meals with lounge chairs. Steps lead down to LADY J’s vast bathing platform. The skylounge on the bridge deck opens onto a spacious area with built-in seating plus open-air dining for 10 guests. 

Designed for leisure, LADY J’s sun deck is the ultimate chill-out zone. Surrounded by a pool bar, a large jacuzzi and a 5-person sunpad. Equipped with a range of fitness equipment, the sun deck is also a great space for outdoor yoga/pilates sessions.

Luxury yacht, disfigured fingers and a police chase: Mystery surrounding rape suspect unravels in LA

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- From a luxury yacht in Wilmington to a dramatic high-speed chase across Los Angeles, the mystery surrounding a fugitive rape suspect from Massachusetts is unraveling.

It involves aliases, disfigured fingers, and that multimillion-dollar boat. Here's how it all unfolded.

The search for Stephen Paul Gale

Stephen Paul Gale, 71, was recently identified through DNA testing as the suspect in a series of rapes in the Boston area from 1989 to 1990.

At the time, he was known as the "Boston Strip Mall Rapist."

He allegedly robbed a store in Framingham, located about 20 miles west of Boston, just two days after Christmas in 1989 and sexually assaulted two female employees while holding a gun to their heads.

According to the U.S. Marshals Service, Gale was on the run for years before he was publicly identified and was last seen in 2008. Information about Gale was distributed nationwide. Investigators also said he once had ties to organized crime.

Gale was known to use the aliases like Stephen Pisarcik, John Rossi, Paul Costa, Paul DeRosa, Paul DiCarli, Paul Joseph DeCarlo, Steve Miner, Paul Williams, and Paul Ptaszynski.

Authorities said he also may have had ties to Phoenix, Arizona, Texas, Utah and Florida.

"He's a monster and he needs to go to prison for the rest of his life," said one of his alleged victims, who did not want to be identified.

The luxury yacht

According to WCVB-TV , sources said Gale was found aboard a yacht named The Dior anchored at Seacoast Yachts in Wilmington when police closed in on Aug. 8.

On Tuesday evening, AIR7 captured exclusive aerial footage of police as they searched the vessel. At least one of the officers involved in the search was from Massachusetts.

"I'm shocked," said Don Smollett, who's lived at the Wilmington Marina for 34 years. "You never know who you talk to anymore, huh?"

Smollett said it's been about seven years since Gale showed up with the yacht. During that time, Smollett said an inordinate amount of money was poured into renovating it.

"They completely remodeled that boat, they put a fortune into that boat," he said. "Everything you could imagine new went into that boat ... electronics and everything."

The Los Angeles Police Department told Eyewitness News that Gale lived on the yacht at least part time, but Smollett said he'd only see him about once a month when Gale would spend several hours onboard, occasionally bringing an unidentified man with him.

"Every now and then, he'd bring another gentleman that looked like him," said Smollett. "I thought it was his brother, a real heavyset guy also."

According to WCVB-TV, once Gale was in custody, police discovered he had mutilated his own fingertips in an effort to evade authorities.

The police chase through Los Angeles

Police believe Gale suspected he was being watched when he got in his SUV and took off, leading police on a lengthy chase.

The chase lasted just over an hour. Gale was driving a dark Lincoln SUV and drove on the 405 Freeway and on surface streets, mostly driving at a moderate rate of speed and obeying stop signs.

For the majority of the chase, he was able to avoid spike strips and PIT maneuver attempts. However, Gale ran over a spike strip in the Westwood area and at least one tire went flat.

He didn't slow down after the spike strip but ultimately, he was taken into custody near the UCLA medical area.

Gale appears in court

Eyewitness News was the only TV station inside an L.A. courtroom Tuesday where Gale was brought in on a gurney to face check-forging charges from the '90s. His lawyers asked to delay his arraignment while matters in Boston proceed, asking for no bail. The judge denied the request.

"Because of the very serious nature of those charges, including extreme cases of violence, including rape, robbery and kidnapping, at this time, I'm going to set bail in the amount of $2 million," the judge said.

Gale's attorneys told Eyewitness News the 71-year-old recently underwent heart surgery and isn't doing well.

"I have not heard of anybody, any crime, any problems he's had in almost 40 years," said attorney Sammy Weiss.

Meanwhile, the women he's accused of raping say they're finally nearing justice.

"It's time for his reign of terror to end," said one of his alleged victims.

Gale is due back in court on October 9.

Weeks Before Yacht Sank in Sicily, Missing Lawyer Shared Post About Living 'Happily Ever After'

A New York City lawyer who went missing after a luxury yacht capsized off the coast of Italy during a storm wrote about living “happily ever after” just weeks earlier.

Christopher Morvillo, 59, is one of six people who remain missing after a waterspout hit the vessel off the coast of Sicily early on Monday, Aug. 19, a senior civil protection officer told PEOPLE on Monday, Aug. 19.  Also missing are Morgan Stanley International chairman Jonathan Bloomer , his wife Judy, Morvillo's wife Neda, as well as British tech entrepreneur  Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah .

A source close to the survivors tells PEOPLE that the group was "celebrating Lynch's acquittal" following a lengthy legal saga that dated back to the 2011 sale of Autonomy, a business software company Lynch founded, to Hewlett Packard. Morvillo worked on the case, which ended in Lynch being acquitted on 15 fraud and conspiracy charges in June, according to the Associated Press  and the  BBC

"That's why he took his closest friends and colleagues on the trip, to celebrate," the source tells PEOPLE. "They had come from the Aeolian Islands, Milazzo and had arrived in Palermo."

One week after a San Francisco jury’s “swift exoneration” of Lynch and his colleague Steven Chamberlain, Morvillo thanked to a long list of litigators for their hard work on the case in a post on his LinkedIn page .

After noting he was “so glad to be home,” Morvillo ended his post with, “And they all lived happily ever after….”

Two months later, Morvillo, his wife, Lynch and Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter disappeared after the 56-meter yacht sank near Porticello.

Gary Lincenberg, an attorney who represented Lynch's colleague Chamberlain in the recent court case, told Business Insider that Morvillo and his wife "are presumed to be passed away.”

Lincenberg did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment.

News of the yacht sinking came shortly after Chamberlin was hit by a car while jogging in England . In a statement on Tuesday, Aug. 20, local police announced that he died in the hospital and that they are investigating his death .

"In the course of 48 hours, I can't process what has happened," Lincenberg told Business Insider.

An estimated 12 passengers and 10 crew members were aboard the boat when it capsized, according to the BBC and Associated Press .

One person, identified as a cook from the boat, was found dead near the yacht, while authorities were able to rescue 15 people, including Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, local sources say.

Sicilian news agency  Ansa  reported that eyewitnesses revealed that the yacht was anchored off shore when it was struck by a tornado over the water, known as a waterspout, lost its balance and sank.

A waterspout is a tornado that forms over water, according to the National Oceanic and and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Some, but not all, “are associated with severe thunderstorms, and are often accompanied by high winds and seas, large hail, and frequent dangerous lightning.”

Typically, tornadic waterspouts “have the same characteristics as a land tornado.” NOAA says these particular storms “ can be large and are capable of considerable destruction.”

Mike Lynch and Morgan Stanley’s Jonathan Bloomer missing after luxury yacht sinks off Sicily

British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, Morgan Stanley International director Jonathan Bloomer, and Chris Morvillo, a prominent American lawyer, are among six people still missing after a tornado hit a luxury yacht off the coast of Sicily.

The vessel sank Monday — killing one of the 22 people on board — after its mast, one of the world’s tallest, broke in half during the storm. Fifteen people have been rescued.

Salvatore Cocina, head of the Italian island’s Civil Protection agency, told journalists at the scene that Bloomer and Morvillo’s wives are also missing.

Bloomer is the non-executive chairman of Morgan Stanley International and also chairman of London-listed insurer Hiscox.

“We are deeply shocked and saddened by this tragedy. Our thoughts are with all those affected, in particular the Bloomer family, as we all wait for further news from this terrible situation,” a Morgan Stanley spokesperson told CNN .

Hiscox chief executive Aki Hussain said in a statement Tuesday that the company was “deeply shocked and saddened” by the “tragic” news.

“Our thoughts are with all those affected, in particular our chair, Jonathan Bloomer, and his wife Judy, who are among the missing, and with their family as they await further news from this terrible situation,” he added.

Divers with the Italian fire brigade will try again to enter the sunken ship Tuesday to search for the missing, after an unsuccessful attempt Monday, Italy’s Coast Guard said on X.

The vessel was hit by the tornado at around 5 a.m. local time Monday, according to a spokesperson for Italy’s Coast Guard. The yacht was anchored about half a mile from the port of Porticello on the Mediterranean island.

Strong storms across Sicily brought torrential rainfall late Sunday, dumping more than 4 inches (100mm) of rain in less than four hours in Brolo, east of Palermo. A report from the European Severe Weather Database revealed that a  waterspout  — a type of tornado that forms over water or moves from land to water — developed over the area where the yacht was anchored Monday morning.

One body was found on the hull of the vessel, and was later identified as the onboard chef Ricardo Thomas, an Antiguan citizen, according to Reuters. Lynch’s wife Angela Bacares, the captain of the yacht, and a one-year old girl are among the people rescued. Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter is still missing.

An Italian newspaper reported Tuesday that Bacares and her husband were initially unconcerned when woken at 4 a.m. local time as the boat tilted.

They only became worried when the yacht’s windows shattered and chaos broke out, she was reported as telling La Repubblica in an interview at a hospital in Sicily.

Lynch, a 59-year-old tech investor and entrepreneur, was acquitted in June in a fraud trial linked to the multi-billion dollar sale of Autonomy, the software firm he co-founded, to Hewlett Packard. Prosecutors alleged that Lynch had schemed to inflate Autonomy’s revenue prior to the sale.

Morvillo, an American lawyer at Clifford Chance, was involved in successfully defending the case against Lynch.

A Clifford Chance spokesperson said the law firm was “in shock and deeply saddened.”

“Our thoughts are with our partner, Christopher Morvillo, and his wife Neda who are among the missing. Our utmost priority is providing support to the family as well as our colleague Ayla Ronald, who together with her partner, thankfully survived the incident,” the spokesperson added.

One survivor, Charlotte, 35, described how she battled to hold onto her one-year-old daughter, Sofia, as a barrage of waves sank the yacht, according to a report from Italian news agency ANSA.

“In two seconds I lost the baby in the sea, then I immediately hugged her again amidst the fury of the waves. I held her tightly, close to me, while the sea was stormy,” she told ANSA. “Many were screaming.”

The United Kingdom’s Marine Accident Investigation Branch is deploying a team of four inspectors to Palermo to conduct a preliminary assessment of the yacht, a source familiar with the operations told CNN Monday. The source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, did not say when the team is expected to arrive in Sicily.

The 56-meter (184-foot) yacht called “Bayesian,” which sailed under a British flag, had mostly British passengers and crew, in addition to two Anglo-French, one Irish, and one Sri Lankan, the spokesperson for Italy’s Coast Guard told CNN.

The New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade told CNN that two of the country’s citizens were involved in the incident but were not among those still missing. The nationality of the dead person has not been disclosed.

The Bayesian had the tallest aluminum mast in the world, at 72.27 meters (237 feet), its Italian manufacturer Perini Navi said on its website.

The mast was three meters (10 feet) shorter than the world’s tallest mast, as ranked by the Guinness World Records. That 75-meter (247-foot) carbon-fiber mast belongs to the Mirabella V, a yacht built by Vosper Thornycroft in Southampton, UK, according to Guinness World Records’ website.

A tornado sank a luxury sailing boat off the coast of sicily. here’s what we know.

Emergency workers in southern Italy are still hunting for at least one person who remains missing after a tornado sank a luxury yacht early Monday – prompting an air and naval operation off the coast of Sicily .

Twenty-two people are thought to have been on the yacht when the tragedy struck. Fifteen people were rescued from the wreckage, according to Italy’s Coast Guard. One body was recovered on Monday and five more were found on Wednesday, after divers struggled to reach deep inside the yacht around 50 meters underwater (approximately 150 feet).

Two Americans and four Britons were among the six initially reported missing – including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley International, and Chris Morvillo, a prominent lawyer. The five bodies found Wednesday have not been identified, while the body recovered Monday is thought to be that of the onboard chef Ricardo Thomas.

Here’s what we know.

What happened?

A small waterspout – a type of tornado – spun over the Mediterranean island early Monday, likely capsizing the sailing boat amid lashings of rain and strong thunderstorms.

The British-flagged yacht, called the “Bayesian,” was anchored about a half a mile from the port of Porticello, on Sicily’s northern coast. The vessel sank after its mast broke in half in the storm, Salvatore Cocina, head of Sicily’s Civil Protection, told CNN on Tuesday.

Eyewitnesses described furious gales and hurricane-like winds that left an avalanche of debris near the pier.

More than a dozen survivors were spotted in the area hanging onto life rafts, according to the captain of a nearby boat, who steadied his ship to avoid colliding with the Bayesian.

“We got this strong hurricane gust and we had to start the engine to keep the ship in an angled position,” Karsten Bower told reporters in Palermo on Monday. “After the storm was over, we noticed that the ship behind us was gone.”

Bower and his crew rescued four injured people, he said, before calling Italy’s Coast Guard – who later rescued the remaining survivors.

One of those rescued – a child – was airlifted to the children’s hospital in Palermo. Eight people were hospitalized in total, according to the mayor’s office.

The girl’s mother, Charlotte, described how she battled to hold onto Sofia, her 1-year-old daughter, as reported by Italian news agency ANSA.

“In two seconds I lost the baby in the sea, then I immediately hugged her again amidst the fury of the waves. I held her tightly, close to me, while the sea was stormy,” she told journalists. “Many were screaming.”

The mother and daughter were later reunited with the father, James, according to a doctor at the local children’s hospital in Palermo.

“The survivors are very tired and are constantly asking about the missing people,” the doctor, Domenico Cipolla, said Monday. “They are talking and crying all the time because they have realized that there is little hope of finding their friends alive.”

Italy’s fire brigade dispatched helicopters to aid in the search, officials said Monday. After an unsuccessful attempt on Monday, the brigade sent divers to try and enter the sunken ship Tuesday, recommencing the operation on Wednesday.

The depth of the wreck means divers can only work there for limited periods of time, according to Marco Tilotta, an inspector for the diving unit of Palermo’s local fire brigade. The Italian fire brigade said Monday its divers had reached the yacht’s hull 49 meters (160 feet) below sea level.

The United Kingdom’s Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) said it has deployed a team of four inspectors to Palermo which is conducting a preliminary assessment of the scene.

Who was on board?

Twenty-two people were on board the Bayesian, which was flying under a British flag and had mostly British passengers and crew, in addition to two Anglo-French, one Irish and one Sri Lankan person, a spokesperson for Italy’s Coast Guard told CNN.

A troupe of high-profile guests are among those missing, including Lynch, the 59-year-old British tech investor who fought a fraud case earlier this year in the United States – which spiraled from the disastrous $11 billion sale of his company to tech firm Hewlett-Packard (HP) in 2011.

His 18-year-old daughter was also named missing. Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, survived the accident. Bacares told Italian daily newspaper La Repubblica that she woke up at 4 a.m. local time, as the boat tilted. She and her husband were not initially concerned, she said, but became worried when the windows of the yacht shattered and chaos erupted.

Bacares spoke to the newspaper while sitting in a wheelchair, at a hospital in the Sicilian town of Termini Imerese. She had abrasions on her feet and bandages on other parts of her body, it reported.

Bloomer, the finance tycoon, and Morvillo, a prominent lawyer – and both their wives – are also among the missing, according to Salvatore Cocina, head of Sicily’s Civil Protection.

Morvillo, an American partner at Clifford Chance, was involved in successfully defeating the US fraud case against Lynch in June. Another employee of the firm, Ayla Ronald, and her partner, survived the incident, according to a spokesperson for Clifford Chance.

The body that was recovered from the vessel on Monday was identified as the onboard chef Ricardo Thomas, an Antiguan citizen, Reuters reported.

What do we know about the boat?

Built in 2008, the 56-meter (184-foot) yacht was manufactured by Italian company Perini Navi, Reuters reported. According to the Associated Press, the boat has been available for charter for $215,000 (€195,000) per week.

Lynch’s wife is linked to the yacht. The Bayesian is held by the company Revtom Limited, according to records from the maritime information service Equasis. The company’s latest annual return from April lists Bacares as the proprietor.

“Bayesian,” the name given to the vessel, is linked to the statistical theory on which Lynch built his fortune, according to Reuters.

The yacht’s mast stood 72.27 meters (237 feet) high above the designated water line, just short of the world’s tallest mast which is 75.2 meters, according to Guinness World Records. It was the tallest aluminium mast in the world, the Perini Navi website said.

Perini Navi is known for making “good quality boats,” according to Caroline White, deputy editor of BOAT International, a media group serving the superyacht industry.

White told CNN that if the Bayesian dismasted, “it should theoretically become more stable.” “But it might be a different story if you are in the middle of a violent storm with incredibly strong winds pinning you to the water,” she added.

Dangerous weather conditions

Strong storms across Sicily brought torrential rainfall late Sunday. Initial reports suggest a small  waterspout , which developed over the area Monday morning, could have been behind the yacht’s sinking.

Waterspouts – one of several types of tornadoes – are spinning columns of air that form over water, or move from land out to water. They are often accompanied by  high winds, high seas, hail and dangerous lightning . While they are most common over tropical oceans, they can form almost anywhere.

Matthew Schanck, chair of the Maritime Search and Rescue Council, told CNN that while waterspouts in Sicily are rare, “there is a risk” they can happen – just not every day.

Waterspouts rely on warm waters to gain energy and the Mediterranean Sea has been very hot, reaching a record  daily median of 28.9 degrees Celsius  (84 Fahrenheit) last week, according to preliminary data from researchers at the Institute of Marine Sciences in Spain.

Local temperatures have been even higher, with waters around Sicily reaching almost 30 degrees Celsius (86 Fahrenheit), almost 3 degrees more than normal, Italian climatologist Luca Mercalli told CNN.

“Warmer oceans have more energy and more humidity to transfer to the atmosphere, the most important fuels for storms,” he said.

An attorney who helped acquit missing tech tycoon Mike Lynch among those feared dead in superyacht disaster

• Christopher Morvillo, who helped Lynch win acquittal at a recent trial, and his wife are missing.
• Morvillo, a former federal prosecutor, worked on high-profile corruption cases.

Among those missing and feared dead in the aftermath of the sinking of "Bayesian," a sailing yacht linked to British technology magnate Mike Lynch , are Lynch's attorney Christopher Morvillo and Morvillo's wife, according to a colleague. Lynch was reportedly on a cruise with friends and coworkers, including Morvillo, to celebrate his acquittal after facing prosecution for financial fraud related to the sale of his company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard in 2011. Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter, as well as two others, are still missing.

Gary Lincenberg, an attorney who represented Lynch's co-defendant Stephen Chamberlain in the high-profile fraud case that recently ended with the acquittal of both men, said Morvillo and his wife "are presumed to be passed away" after the yacht went down near Sicily.

He said the news came shortly after he learned that Lynch's codefendant Chamberlain was killed, struck by a car while jogging on Saturday.

"In the course of 48 hours, I can't process what has happened, but both of our clients, as well as Chris and his wife, are gone," Lincenberg told Business Insider.

Lincenberg said in a follow-up email that Chamberlain "was a courageous man with unparalleled integrity" and that his acquittal preserved his good name, which would live on through his family.

Morvillo's law firm, Clifford Chance, didn't immediately reply to a comment request on Monday. One of Morvillo's family members declined to comment.

Before going into private practice, Morvillo was a federal prosecutor in Manhattan until 2005. He worked on several high-profile corruption cases and comes from a family of well-known New York white-collar attorneys.

Another attorney at the firm, Ayla Ronald, is reportedly among those who survived the yacht's sinking.
