How to Dress Like Harvey Specter: Suits, Shoes, Ties & More

Harvey Specter’s style is legendary.

Portrayed by Gabriel Macht in the hit USA network show Suits , if there’s one thing New York’s best closer is associated with most, it is his power suits and formal wear.

From the 3 piece suits to the peaked lapels, there’s always something to set his sartorial looks apart.

In this article, we’ll delve deep into each aspect of Harvey Specter’s formal suit style, his accessories, his black tie style, and how you can dress like Harvey Specter.

Harvey Specter’s Style

Harvey Specter’s style is classic and versatile, and makes him appear more dominant by visually broadening his chest and making him look taller. As a general rule, his colour combinations and accessories are simple, and his clothes fit perfectly, making his style professional and methodical.

You can dress like Harvey Specter by wearing dark slim fit two buttoned suits with 4″ peaked lapels and ticket pockets, a white spread collar shirt with barrel cuffs, and simple accessories, such as dark 8cm silk ties, tied with a large knot, dark classic shoes, and white pocket squares. 

One of his best quotes is “people respond to how we dress”. From this, we can connote that he doesn’t dress well because he enjoys it, but because he has to to get ahead – it’s functional.

On top of this, the field of law has traditional and conservative dress standards, which he is required to stick to.

Both of these reasons explain why his style is so simple and unadventurous, but put together; as a result, s ome (me) may consider Harvey’s clothing to be boring.

But if you’re a beginner looking to improve your clothing game, Harvey Specter is the prefect person to look towards for establishing a good base formal wardrobe.

However, despite the apparent conventional nature of his wardrobe, he does opt for particular details in his clothing (covered next) that help him to exert dominance, assertiveness and confidence.

But enough from me, here are some words from Gabriel Macht about Harvey Specter’s style:

Harvey Specter Suits

Harvey’s suits are usually in dark, professional colours, like navy, charcoal, or medium grey (and on a few cases brown or champagne), and as aforementioned, usually all feature similar details:

• Two buttons
• Wool material
• Subtle or no pattern
• Wide peaked lapel
• Ticket pocket
• Double vent
• Structured shoulders
• Side adjusters
• Medium rise trousers.

You may be thinking ‘whoa, that’s a lot to take in’ . This next section will explore this anatomy of a typical Harvey Specter suit in detail, explain what each part is, and how you can get it.

Two Buttons

Most of Harvey’s suits feature two buttons with a neutral button stance, meaning his looks are balanced. Two buttons on the suit jacket is the most classic button configuration, an

He only buttons the top button up, as per correct buttoning etiquette.

On some occasions, Harvey brings in different button configurations, such as:

• Two roll one – A suit with a ‘two roll one’ buttoning configuration buttons like a two button suit, but has a third button hole in the lapel, not intended for fastening.
• Three buttoned – On some occasions in the later seasons, Harvey wore three buttoned suit jackets.
• Double breasted Y formation – Harvey wears a double breasted suit to Mike’s wedding.

Wool Material

Harvey’s suits are usually constructed from high quality 100% worsted wool fabric, presumably from historical mills.

Some of his suits in the later seasons also feature a subtle shine, suggesting a blend with a material such as silk.

If you’re a beginner, I would recommend looking for suits that feature 100% wool fabric.

Subtle or No Pattern

His suits are regularly just block colours, like navy, blue, or some shade of grey.

However, he sometimes brings in stripe patterns or checks, like chalk stripe, or windowpane checks.

These are equally as formal as block colours, but work to add a bit more visual interest to his conservative attire.

All of his suits feature a trimmed cut, and sit close to the body.

An exception can be seen in some of his early suits, where the trousers could perhaps be slightly oversized and flair out.

How to Get The Look – Slim Cut

Harvey would still look good in a suit, even if it didn’t have all of his special detailing, if it fit him correctly.

When you’re out buying your suit, make sure it fits properly, or take it to a tailor to have it adjusted.

If there’s one thing you take from this article, please let it be this, as it also applies to any piece of clothing you wear.

Wide Peaked Lapel

In the scenes set in the present day, almost all of Harvey’s ensembles  feature wide peaked lapels.

They increase the formality level of the suit, visually broaden his shoulders and chest, and add to his already masculine physique.

On top of this, it’s a clear indication of premium clothing and works to cement his place as a leader in his field, and show he is at the top of the rank hierarchy.

More practically, wide peaked lapels add just enough visual interest to make his otherwise typical jacket stand out.

Ticket Pocket

Like the peaked lapels, a ticket pocket is usually an indicator of quality clothing, and makes the suit jacket stand out slightly.

It’s found on Harvey’s right, above the regular pocket, and is a traditionally English nuance.

How to Get the Look – Wide Peaked Lapels and Ticket Pocket

For wide peaked lapels and ticket pockets, you can try the designer brand Tom Ford , the company who produced his original suits in season one. However, these can be hard to come by, and command a high price tag.

Alternatively, you can opt to get a bespoke garment made for you from an independent tailor, and request for them to include as many features of Harvey’s suits as you like.

However, if you live in the west, this too will usually have a high price tag, not to mention investment of your time and energy.

The final option I can recommend would be a speciality retailer, such as Suitsupply, who sometimes offer suits with very similar styling.

Suitsupply’s Washington line features most of the items on the list, including a peaked lapel, ticket pocket, and on select models side adjusters.

However, Suitsupply don’t sell mix and match separates in this style, so if you’re of a atypical size (like me), the average sized suit size pairings will probably not fit you, or will require a lot of tailoring to fit right.

That said, in certain regions, Suitsupply offer a custom made to measure, and custom line, which allows you to choose all of the details of the suit, including a non matching size of jacket and trousers.

Double Vent

Most suit jackets feature a ‘double vent’ , that is, two slits at the back of the suit jacket that create a flap.

Harvey’s suits are no exception.

The double vent gives the greatest mobility to the suit wearer compared to other vent types. Therefore, you should aim for your suit jacket to also have double vents, unless you are wearing a tuxedo.

Fortunately, this shouldn’t be such a hard task as it is the standard for most suits.

Structured Shoulders

All of his suits feature strong, structured shoulders, that again build up his frame. This is achieved by loading up the shoulder area with padding, and is very typical of English style suiting.

Side Adjusters

Most of Harvey’s trousers feature tab side adjusters.

Not only are they an indicator of quality tailoring, but are very functional, allowing you to adjust your trouser waist to fit you exactly (helping you survive after a large client lunch).

Though they are only seen when he takes his jacket off, they are, in my opinion, one of the best details of his sartorial wardrobe.

How to Get The Look – Side Adjusters

Though typically uncommon, trousers with side adjusters can be found at speciality retailers, such as Suitsupply.

On top of this, it is actually possible to add side adjusters to suit trousers that don’t initially have them. All you will need is a good tailor, and some extra suit fabric.

So, if you find a suit that you like, and it doesn’t have side adjusters, get a longer pair of trousers (to get the extra fabric), and have a tailor take your trousers up, and use the removed fabric to create side adjusters.

It’s what I’ve done for some of my trousers, and the results are awesome.

Most of Harvey’s trousers feature a full break, the most classic trouser finish.

How to Get The Look – Full Break

Most brick and mortar suit shops will pin your trousers up and ask you what type of trouser finish you want.

Simply ask for a ‘full break’, or show them a picture of one of Harvey Specter’s suits, and they should be able to emulate the style.

Outfit Example: Blue Suit

Packaged together, all of the above items produce the following look:

Furthermore, this image alone cements the importance of fit – even if all of Harvey’s other styling preferences remained constant, if the suit were two sizes too big, it would look terrible.

So, that’s Harvey’s typical suit for you – next, let’s take a look at some variations that add to, or alter, his standard look.

Harvey Specter’s Vests

Sometimes Harvey opts for a 3 piece suit, which signals the inclusion of a matching waistcoat (or vest) along with the jacket and trousers.

This raises the formality level of the suit, and again reinforces his stance as a confident   character , as many men shy away from this item.

Though, he does sometimes make the faux pas of buttoning his jacket while wearing a waistcoat.

I would suggest not emulating this detail, as an open suit jacket when wearing a waistcoat produces a much more flattering look.

Harvey’s vests:

• Are always single breasted
• Never feature a lapel
• Always match exactly with the suit he is wearing (he does not wear odd waistcoats)
• Usually have 6 buttons

Harvey’s vests are especially welcome as his trousers feature side adjusters, which, unlike a belt, do not break the line of the waistcoat.

Other Suits

Three buttoned suit.

On occasions, specifically throughout season 6, Harvey wears a three buttoned suit.

I personally feel it doesn’t work well with the peaked lapels, and produces a strange, overly elongated and rather dated look.

Harvey Specter’s Double Breasted Suit

Harvey wears a double breasted suit to Mike’s wedding. Though it doesn’t get a lot of screen time, and spends most of the time unbuttoned, it’s a good look, and in Harvey’s eyes a special item, for a special occasion.

What brand of suit does Harvey Specter wear?

Many wonder what brand of suits Harvey Specter wears.

Harvey Specter exclusively wears Tom Ford suits in the early seasons, Gucci suits in the flashback sequences, and bespoke Garrison suits in the later seasons. Regardless of which brand of suit he is wearing, the details and fit of the garments stay generally consistent.

Tom Ford suits retail for around £2,000 – £4,000, and Garrison suits are only available in Canada on special order, with varying prices depending on the fabric.

Conclusion – Harvey Specter’s Suit Style

It’s hard to find a suit with all of the features found on Harvey’s, but it can be done – they all work together to produce a certain ‘style’, so if a suit has one, it will likely have some of the others.

Hitting all of  the suit nuances is a difficult task, but that’s why it’s so powerful – you will likely be the only one with the styling options, setting you apart.

Again, I would recommend Suitsupply as your best bet.

Harvey Specter’s Shirts

Harvey Specter’s shirts are usually muted colours, such as white or sky blue, feature a cutaway or spread collar, barrel cuffs, and a H.S. monogram. In the earlier seasons, some of Harvey’s shirts featured coloured blue or pink vertical butcher, Budd, or bar code stripes .

Harvey Specter Shirt Colours & Patterns

Harvey’s shirts are usually block white , but are also occasionally light blue, pink, or grey.

On occasion, most notably in the earlier seasons, he does wear striped shirts, which I feel adds a bit of much needed interest to his typically safe attire.

These stripes even combine with some of his rarer colours, such as pink and sky blue, to produce some sharp combinations.

These striped shirts bring some much needed warmth into Harvey Specter’s style and outfits, and in my opinion elevate his style greatly.

If you’re looking to bring some of his style into your wardrobe, I would recommend looking into these type conservative, striped shirts. They brighten you up and make your look more personable than a ‘down to business’ white shirt, but retain much of the formality.

In all cases, Harvey pairs the colour of the shirt with a subtly textured tie of a similar colour.

Matching Shirt and Ties Like Harvey

In the below collage:

• With the blue striped shirts, Harvey pairs a textured navy tie.
• With the pink striped shirt, Harvey pairs a textured purple tie.

All of these combinations match within colour pallet – the blues with the blues, and reds with the reds. This is a really easy way to skilfully match coloured pieces, and allows Harvey to guarantee the combination will work, and still look professional.

In this instance, he has introduced patterns into both is tie and shirt:

Though both patterns are stripes, he makes sure to keep the patterns to different sizes.

So, his shirt has finer stripes, while his tie has thicker, and further spaced stripes.

This actively differentiates between the two, and provided the colours within the items work together, they will look good.

Harvey’s shirts fit well, though I feel are sometimes slightly on the baggy side, and could do with slight tapering in in the midsection.

However, this enables comfort, and the excess fabric doesn’t look too bad as it hangs rather well.

That said, his shirts, especially the through the arms, the sleeve length and neck, all fit perfectly, especially the one pictured above.

Some of Harvey’s shirts feature a monogram in the non-traditional location of the left cuff.

This very ‘typical’ Specter detail is usually accomplished in a blue thread, as pictured below, or in a more subtle grey.

The best thing is that some shirt makers, such as Charles Tyrwhitt , actually offer this service, so you too can emulate this detail rather easily.

Harvey Specter’s Shirt Brand

Harvey Specter wears shirts from a variety of top fashion brands, such as Brioni, Canali, Tom Ford, Zenga, D&G and Thomas Pink, and lesser known houses such as Fairfax, Bergdorf Goodman, Eterna and Charvet.

Where to get Harvey Specter’s Shirts

Harvey’s typical white shirts are classically styled, so will likely be easy to come by in most retail stores.

Therefore, the main considerations you have to pay attention to are fabric quality, and collar type, as true spread collars can be elusive.

To recap, his shirts usually have the following details:

• Muted colour (Predominantly white, but also sky blue or grey)
• Spread collar
• Button OR French (cufflink) cuffs
• A subtle light blue ‘H.S.’ monogram on the left cuff
• Trim, but not restrictive, fit.

I would personally recommend Charles Tyrwhitt for good quality shirts, at a reasonable price.

Alternatively, Spier and Mackay provide great mid level shirts, and Turnball and Asser provide possibly some of the finest shirts in the world.

Harvey Specter’s Ties

Harvey Specter’s ties are of conservative colours, such as navy, grey, silver or burgundy, and frequently feature texture or small repeated patterns. They are made from either 100% silk or wool cashmere, and are 8-9cm in width. Harvey Specter ties his ties with large, symmetrical full Windsor or half Windsor knots.

Again, in line with the general trend of his attire, his ties are unassuming and easy to wear; this is understandable though, as the profession demands this professional dress code.

His ties also match with the rest of his style preferences, specifically:

• The wide tie width of 8cm matches in proportion with his wider lapels, aiding visual balance.
• The muted colour and texture matches with the rest of his items.

The Harvey Specter Tie Knot

Harvey’s commanding tie knot is one of the most signature points of his style.

As a general rule, Harvey Specter ties a his ties with the large and symmetrical full Windsor , or Half Windsor knots . In some flashback sequences, Harvey ties his tie using a narrow and asymmetrical 4-in-hand knot. His knots correspond in proportion to his collar type, and feature a tie dimple.

Awesomely, Gabriel Macht released this video showing him tying a half Windsor knot:

The half Windsor in the above video is, in my opinion, the perfect choice for his personal style, and collar type.

Given the semi-spread collar, I would consider his second favourite, the full Windsor , too big for his collar, and of incorrect proportions – a semi-spread collar is best suited with a slightly smaller knot, such as a half-Windsor , or even a slimmer one, such as the classic four-in-hand .

However, there is no question that Harvey’s full Windsor knot commands authority, and is yet another way that he shows status through his clothing.

If you are looking at bringing the full Windsor knot into your wardrobe, I would recommend looking at shirts with cutaway, extreme cutaway, or wide spread collars, as there is more space to fill, which can be provided by a Windsor knot.

To add to this, his tie knots almost always feature a tie dimple , which gives the knot a third dimension, drawing the eye to the face. It is also a mark of someone with sartorial experience.

Harvey Specter wears ties from the Italian fashion house Armani, and other brands such as Tom Ford, Canali, Zenga, Harry Rosen, and Robert Talbot.

Where to get Harvey Specter’s Ties

Harvey’s ties are again classically styled, so you will likely be able to find ties of similar aesthetic in many men’s retail outlets.

To recap, his ties usually have the following details:

• Muted colour : black, grey, navy, purple, burgundy
• Sometimes lightly textured
• Sometimes lightly patterned , with a classic pattern such as hounds tooth
• Classic 8cm width
• 100% silk, or cashmere fabric
• Windsor, half Windsor, or 4-in-hand knot, usually in proportion to the collar he is wearing at the time
• Correct length , hitting at the belt line

Harvey Specter’s Accessories

A suit is bare without accessories – this section will take a look at some of Harvey’s favourite, which you may want to try and incorporate into your outfits.

Pocket Square

Harvey is frequently seen sporting a classic white pocket square with a ‘presidential fold’ . You can’t go wrong with this.

However, sometimes a pocket square is absent from his ensemble.

In my opinion, you should always wear a pocket square with tailoring – it doesn’t cost much, but makes a huge difference by adding visual interest to your look, and shows that you have attention to detail.

Interestingly though, despite typically sporting an easily wearable white pocket square, he sometimes wears pocket squares in atypical colours such as navy, or ones with a slight sheen.

Harvey Specter Watch – Patek Philippe 5004p

Now it may be a surprise to you that Harvey doesn’t wear many watches.

And, it’s not because it doesn’t suit the character, but something a bit more practical.

According to Gabriel Macht in an interview for timeandtidewatches.com , “the reason we have not put Harvey in a watch since then [season one] is because the suits look better without.”

I disagree – but I think it’s all to do with the type of watch they were trying to get him to wear.

The season one Harvey Specter watch he was referring to was the Patek Philippe 5004p , and is seen in the opening scene of episode three.

There’s no doubt that this allegedly $400,000 watch is a stunner, and actually fits the character. However, I would recommend that you wear a sleeker and dressier watch with a suit.

Macht added “it’s a good choice for Harvey because his dress and presentation is quite aware of itself. I could see a Patek being part of his arsenal to put someone off guard” and “with all the changes that we go through in a day, it became too much without enough success of getting those shots in” , confirming that timepieces would be a greater part of the character if the demands of television production allowed it.

Harvey Specter’s Shoes

Like the rest of his wardrobe, Harvey likes to keep it safe and simple when it comes to footwear, which isn’t a bad thing.

He wears leather and rubber soled shoes of either toe capped oxford or wholecut styles , which sometimes feature subtle brogue patterning. All of his shoes also look to have a Goodyear welt.

Within these styles, Harvey is seen to wear shoes in a wide variety of colours, such as black, dark brown, tan and oxblood.

So, he has really brought every formal colour to the party.

Harvey Specter mainly wears shoes from Tom Ford, but also wears other brands, such as Canali and Prada.

Where to get Harvey Specter’s Shoes

Though Harvey’s shoes are again classic, finding and purchasing good shoes is a difficult task. Unfortunately, I can only recommend shopping about, and discovering different brands for yourself, as I personally tend to a different style of shoe.

As a recap, Harvey’s shoes have the following items:

• Muted, formal, colour : black, dark brown, tan, oxblood.
• High quality Goodyear welt construction.
• Premium calf leather.
• Leather or quality rubber soles.
• Toe capped Oxford or Wholecut shoe styles.

I would also advocate to purchase an install shoe protectors to the front and back of your shoe, as you can see Harvey’s shoes are wearing away at the front and back.

Harvey Specter’s Tuxedo Style

Harvey doesn’t just kill his formal game in the office – at black tie events, he also continues his mantra of being impeccably and classically put together.

Importantly, he has actually purchased a Tom Ford tuxedo , and doesn’t try to pass off one of his black peaked lapel suits as a garment appropriate for evening parties.

Harvey’s tuxedo follows most of the same style preferences as his suits, such as wide peaked lapels, and strong shoulders, which build up his masculine physique. However, this should be expected, as it’s from the same brand. Check out my article on other tuxedo types , for suggestions that will suit your preference.

His shit and accessories are also tuxedo appropriate – he wears a proper evening shirt , complete with pleats and mother of pearl buttons, and a diamond tipped bow tie, which matches in fabric to his lapel facing.

Harvey’s typical tuxedo style includes:

• Wide peaked lapels (like his suits)
• Satin facing lapels
• Jetted pockets (Without a flap)
• A diamond tipped bow tie
• A pleated tuxedo shirt
• Mother of pearl buttons
• A pointed collar

How to Look Better than Harvey in a Tuxedo

All in all, Harvey follows most of the rules of conventional black tie , however there are things that you can improve upon, to look better than Harvey in a tuxedo:

• I feel his collar is slightly too pointed, and sticks out from under his bow tie, creating an unflattering look. Find a dinner shirt with a slightly more spread collar.
• Though his tuxedo shirt’s buttons are mother of pearl, he has not replaced them with tuxedo studs, which would complete the look. Buy tuxedo studs, and use them in place of your shirt’s buttons.
• Harvey should opt for a traditional waist covering, such as a waistcoat, or cummerbund. Purchase and wear a cummerbund or waistcoat.
• It looks like Harvey is wearing a pre-tied bow tie – learning to tie a bow tie yourself isn’t just badass, but looks one hundred times better.
• Harvey doesn’t wear a customary silk white evening pocket square. Invest in, and add one to your ensemble.

How to Dress Like Harvey Specter in an Overcoat

New York can get cold. Really cold.

Harvey’s Tom Ford overcoats usually follow the same rules as his suits, and feature wide peaked lapels, a ticket pocket, and structured shoulders.

This particular overcoat (above) features a covered placket, meaning the jacket buttons don’t show.

The jacket is likely made from wool or cashmere, and fits his body well.

To add to this, throughout the show, he is seen to wear a multitude of overcoats in different colours, like the below pictured black, medium grey, and aubergine.

However, each time, to finish the look, he wraps a scarf, presumably made from cashmere, around his neck. These scarfs include dark purple , camel and grey , and provide a stylish contrast between the rest of his outfit.

This shows the power of a uniform – each look is the same ‘style’, but different in colour – he knows what sort of image he wants to portray, and sticks to it.

Harvey’s Trench Coat

In season 3 episode 5, Harvey wears this black trench coat.

We’ve previously seen how he protects himself from the rain in his casual clothing , but this dressier option shows us how he does this when rocking a suit.

Water proof trench coats are typically easy to find, and can be acquired for many shops such as as Zara or H&M.

So, we’ve finally got down to the bottom of how to dress like Harvey Specter in smart, dressy situations.

But it doesn’t cover the whole picture.

He maintains an awesome wardrobe and look on all fronts, consequently, I would recommend checking out my other articles on Harvey’s casual style , and Harvey’s main hairstyles , so you can fully emulate his style.

However, that said, he dresses for function – if it wasn’t an important part of how people perceive you, I’m sure he wouldn’t pay any attention to his appearance.

And this means that, though he’s put together well, it’s as simple as possible.

It’s mostly a uniform that sticks to a rigid style and colour pallet.

I tried this once, and got ridiculously bored.

So, if you’re more into style like myself, I wouldn’t recommend copying Harvey Specter’s style exactly , but bringing in pieces of it, such as peaked lapels, or larger knots.

But if you just want to use clothing as a tool to get ahead, his wardrobe is a good place to start.

Harvey Specter. For those in the know, it’s a name that conjures up a knowing nod of agreement among men and women alike: goddamn, that guy  looks good in a suit .

If you’ve seen any of the high-stakes legal drama,  Suits , (the clue is in the title; and yes, it’s the one that starred the Royal Family’s newest member), you’ll be familiar with the lead character’s oft-referenced, efficacious persona and swaggering good looks. Harvey Specter is the  James Bond  of the small-screen courtroom. He’s Don Draper for the Netflix era, and his witty one-liners are Instagram catnip for Monday morning motivational memes. “Sorry I can’t hear you over the sound of how awesome I am”.

When Harvey Specter walks into a room, he exudes authority and people listen; he wears  the best suits  because his suits are his uniform – his superhero cape, if you will – and are all a reminder of what exceptional, well-fitted tailoring can do for a man.

We all know that uniforms are aesthetically alluring. ‘All the nice girls love a sailor’, as the old military singalong goes, and just ask a marine. They’ll vouch for the reputation. But, a uniform also has the desired effect of purporting a sense of heroism and power, a dedication to a higher cause.

For us metropolis-dwelling civilians, Harvey Specter included, our closest adaptation is a flawless suit. A suit tailored with military precision and worn like a uniform is the armour for any man going into battle at 9am.

It’s this uniform approach that dictates many of the style cues of Harvey Specter’s suits. There’s a distinct lack of fuss, colour or accessories in his tailoring, reflective of his no-nonsense approach to business. He has established what works for him – a cut as sharp as his tongue, and he keeps variety to a minimum, saving surprises for his unsuspecting business adversaries. And no, Harvey Specter doesn’t do  business-casual . “People respond to how we’re dressed, so like it or not this is what you have to do.”

How To Dress Like Harvey Specter

For the most part, Harvey Specter opts for a classic business suit look, a two-piece with side vents and polished details such as a sharp close cut, peak lapels and flapped pockets. His shoulders are also usually ‘roped’, meaning there’s a strong overall shape and magnificent roll of firmness in the fabric at the sleeve head, creating a powerful but contemporary silhouette, perfect for his disarming persona.

To emulate the character off-screen,  buy a suit  that avoids exaggerating these proportions. That’s key if you want to keep it contemporary and dodge the city-slicker power-suit vibes, made famous by the 1980s Wall Street lot. The Harvey Specter way of dressing is very much in contrast to the now-dated look of extremely-wide lapels, heavy  pinstripes , braces, cutaway collars and statement socks. Of course, that look is still prevalent in certain corners of New York City and London, but it is (thankfully) becoming increasingly rare.

As for brands, Harvey Specter’s style is very much in line with that of Ralph Lauren (particularly the American giant’s Purple Label line) and early Tom Ford suits – which the character was known to wear in the show. His  sunglasses  too, are always simple, understated and by Tom Ford.

It’s important to compare his suit details with those of his whip-smart, young protégé, Mike Ross. A softer overall shape, notch lapels, relaxed shoulders, flatter fabrics, and a cut that’s not quite as form-fitting are all key signifiers of the quiet hierarchy and subtle differences these suits support.

Get The Look

The accessories.

Tailoring is easily over-accessorised, so it’s refreshing to see Harvey Specter adopt, at most, a clean, elegantly folded white  pocket square  on the odd occasion.

He tends to take a classic approach to fabric choices, opting for dark, high-twist worsted wools or wool-blends with a touch of silk for that extra nod to luxury. If there’s any pattern at all its shark-skin or a fine wider rope stripe – there’s no sign of window-pane or country tweeds here. He takes a timeless boardroom approach to the styling and colour palette of his ensembles with a mostly plain, monochrome selection, which again ensures his uniformity and formality remains intact.

If he opts for blue, it’s an elegant navy, not a brash cobalt hue. His default shirt choice is white, with a classic collar just long and wide enough to suit his  face shape , as well as barrel or subtle French cuffs with simple cufflinks. He’s also often seen in one of the all-time great tailoring combinations – that is the Cary Grant shark-grey suit with white shirt and black tie.

Do not let it be said that this is boring or safe. It takes a man who knows his look and is confident enough to be able to wear such simplicity to be able to pull it off.

But if there’s one critique of Harvey Specter’s look, it’s his tie choice: too much satin and a full Windsor knot, both of which date his look. The full Windsor shape is generally too large for most people’s collar and head size, and can cheapen the look of a tie – just ask Premier League footballers. Of course, you can see why the costume department opted for this  tie knot  on Specter as it serves to highlight his position as the top dog within the company. However, in the modern day, opt for a fabric with no sheen, save the silks for weddings – just your own, in fact – and a four-in-hand knot replete with a dimple is preferable.

Harvey Specter’s Best looks

Three-piece suit.

On the odd occasion Harvey Specter does throw on a three-piece, he will undoubtedly nail the look. This is thanks in no small part to his mantra of keeping an outfit simple, understated and not overcomplicating it with colour, fuss or too much styling.

A prime example of this comes in the form of a tonal combination of all-navy with a white shirt, and subtle lapel detail on the waistcoat – with the bottom button undone, of course. And when he removes his jacket and loosens the tie, he still looks pristine.

Eveningwear

There have been a few scenes where the Suits boys have suited up to the next level and donned black tie . As always, Harvey Specter is the benchmark of impeccable evening style, and while he could have used a cummerbund to avoid the white of his shirt showing at the waist, his look is more contemporary without one.

The diamond-point bow tie is a brilliant alternative detail, which he pairs perfectly with a classic buttoned dress shirt and signature silk peak lapels – a timeless, winning combination.

Winter Harvey

During the colder months, Harvey Specter’s layers are an extension of the great fitting suit he wears underneath. Befitting brisk New York mornings, he usually opts for a knee-length or three-quarter wool or cashmere winter coat , with peak or notch lapels in a dark navy, grey or black.

There’s a hint of styling in the form of a simple scarf worn loose or draped to follow the line of the lapel gorge, which sums up what Harvey Specter does best – keeping it classic but supremely cool.

There's a lot to envy about Harvey Specter.

The outrageous confidence, the power, the prestige…

The sharp comebacks… and the ultra-sharp suits.

Harvey dresses like he does everything else – strategically.

“People respond to how we’re dressed…

So like it or not, this is what you have to do.”

Everyone's appearance sends a message – and everything about his says loud and clear:

“I'm not about caring, I'm about winning.”

Of course, he does care – he cares about Mike, he cares about Donna, and he cares about his personal code of ethics. But that's not the message he chooses to send. There's nothing soft about his look.

”If they think you care, they'll walk all over you.”

Read on to find out how to get the sharp and powerful Harvey Specter look.

Okay, let's break this down. What are the main elements of Harvey Specter's style strategy? Number 1, of course, has to be…

#1. The Suit

Harvey is virtually ALWAYS seen in an expensive suit. Gabriel Macht, who plays him, says: ‘He’s a man of style… we really wanted him to be this man’s man. A real masculine, strong, Steve McQueen-type of guy who could pull off a three piece suit and make it a modern thing, wide lapels and all.'

How does Harvey pull off his suits? Using two things you can learn right here at RMRS – confidence and the style pyramid  of fit, fabric, and function . The fit of his suits is always on point, which takes extra effort for men with a tall body type (Gabriel Macht is 6'0.5″/183cm.) The fabrics are top quality – early season suits were mostly dark high twisted worsted wool, but recently he's wearing silk-wool blends that add an unusual shine.

And as for function (appropriateness for the situation)? As a workaholic hotshot lawyer , Harvey lives for high-powered formal situations where a suit is  required.  He doesn't suit up when it's outright inappropriate… which means we see him in something else a good 2% of the time.

Harvey has a medium contrast complexion  and dresses well for it, most often pairing gray, charcoal, and occasionally navy or black suits with white shirts . Gray and white form a sleek, classic combination that shows he means serious business.

Where a man with just one or two suits might stick to solid colors and maybe a pinstripe, Harvey has a wardrobe of different suit patterns including sharkskin, Prince of Wales checks and stripes – he prefers the bolder rope stripes to pinstripes (pinstripes are just one thread wide, rope stripes are several.)

He wears a slim fit with high armholes and strong structured shoulders – highlighting his athletic physique. Wide peak lapels give him a powerful broad-shouldered ‘v' shape – the key to wearing them like he does is to get the gorge of the lapel not too high and not too low. If it peaks out over your shoulders, it is too much, and if it is too low it looks too old school.

Peak lapels are more formal – he sets himself apart by wearing them (except sometimes when he's in a three-piece suit, which is more formal anyway). Because they're more common on a tuxedo, on a business suit they suggest authority and/or arrogance.

Taking a deeper dive into suit jacket details , the big flap pockets on his jackets are a little unusual with peak lapels; jetted pockets are more normal.

You might expect to see a three-button suit on him because he's a ‘buttoned up' character and it would suit his tall athletic build. However, Harvey knows TWO buttons are the best choice for a single-breasted suit with peak lapels . It's a classic elegant look that's been around since the 1920s – two buttons leave room for longer lapels and accentuate them more.

His jacket cuffs, on the other hand, are as formal and buttoned-up as they get, with four buttons on each. The more buttons on the cuffs, the more formal the jacket , with single buttons denoting a sports jacket.

Pants are slim but not tight, with an ironed crease down the front, no pleats, no break and usually no cuffs. This suits his strict character – very neat and no fuss.

#2. The Shirts

Harvey mostly wears plain white dress shirts – again, the most formal color. He also favors pale blue, and occasionally a gingham or stripe. The tall semi-spread collars accentuate his ‘v' shape.

His shirts are very well fitted and always let a sliver of cuff show outside his jacket. He usually prefers simple classic button cuffs , but occasionally goes for the fancier French cuffs and cufflinks .

#3. The Accessories

“Get your skinny tie out of my face and get to work.”

Harvey's ties are always silk – navy grenadine is a favorite.  Dark purple and black are other favorite colors. His look is VERY monochrome – it's part of the character.

His ties vary between 3 and 3.5 inches wide, a classic width. He doesn't wear anything too young and trendy. His wider ties and lapels contrast with Mike's skinny ones and make him look more powerful.

He favors the full Windsor tie knot – a powerful, formal, ‘serious business' knot that marks him out as a guy who knows how to dress and looks great with his wide lapels and semi-spread collars. He's rarely seen without a dimple in his ties , showing he knows how to dress and pays attention to the details. The one time his tie dimple is off center, Donna notices something is wrong!

With a tux he wears a diamond-pointed bow tie instead of the normal shape. That's quirkier than you'd expect from him, but it's like the peak lapels – sharp and pointed – which suits his aggressive and incisive mind.

He always wears a pocket square in a square Presidential fold , usually white or gray. A white pocket square in a square fold is as formal as they come and suits his businesslike, no-nonsense image. You won't see him with a flower in his lapel – this is a hard and sharp look, nothing soft or romantic on this determinedly unemotional guy. To finish the look, he chooses simple and bold metal cufflinks .

Earlier in the series, Harvey was seen wearing a bold statement chronograph watch with a leather strap – a status symbol meant to mark him out as a successful man. The watch has since disappeared because of the technical constraints of filming for TV. Gabriel Macht says:

‘As great as the show is, it really doesn’t lend itself to detail. Other than some necklaces you might see Jessica wear, you don’t see any jewelry.'

#4. The Shoes

Because of the nature of TV, you don't often see Harvey's shoes, and they're not a big focus of his costume. He's been seen in black cap-toed derbies, and black or brown oxford brogues – all classic smart dress shoes, although brown full brogues are a bit more casual than you'd expect from him.

#5. Casual Clothing

Aside from the suit, he's been seen in a classic black button-down shirt ; well-fitting jeans ; a white or heathered grey henley ; beige chinos; and a navy v-neck and coat over a white shirt . (Not a casual shirt, by the way, just a dress shirt like he'd wear to the office – showing his wardrobe, like his life, is mostly work.)

#6. The Hair

In 2011 Gabriel Macht said of Harvey's original slicked-back do, “It’s supposed to be the modern version of the old-style man’s haircut , sort of like Gregory Peck or Cary Grant.”

But as more sides of the character have emerged his hair has evolved- now it's more vertical, but still strict and structured, featuring a  tight side-part (on the left side) with a subtle pompadour in the front.

To get this look, you need the sides cut short (not buzzed) and some length on top.

Run a strong hold gel (or pomade for less shine) through towel dried hair then blow dry on a low heat while combing the front upwards. The longer you blow-dry the front, the more volume you’ll get.

Then apply more gel and use your comb to cut the side-part and sculpt the front hair up and back. Fix with a little hairspray.

If you prefer his earlier slicked-back style , you want a similar cut with squared-off sideburns and a square neckline and shaved part. Again, apply some gel to your hair before blow-drying, then comb it back with pomade and set with hairspray.

I don't recommend that every man dresses exactly like Harvey Specter. It's a very stark monochromatic look, and for guys with more fun and warmth in their personalities, it might not suit you. You can emulate his confidence without exactly copying his look.

What I DO recommend is that you copy Harvey Specter in dressing strategically . Think about what YOUR message is, and make sure every stitch on your body and every hair on your head communicates it.

The Suits of Harvey Specter

It has been a while since I discovered a series that truly arrested my attention but when I first tuned in to Suits I was instantly captivated. It piqued my interest with witty dialogue, good character development and a fantastic wardrobe, all wrapped up in an excellent setting, albeit one that I usually find thoroughly dull, Law.

If you haven’t seen Suits, it is a captivating legal drama set in the heart of New York City at one of the city's most prestigious law firms. I found myself captivated by one particular character, Harvey Specter. An egotistical, uncompassionate and yet charismatic Harvard graduate who will do whatever it takes to win. He emits an aura of professionalism and superiority which is largely created by his dialogue but is backed up by a formidable wardrobe. If you would like to adopt a power suit like Harvey Specter then read on!

Part of the show that I found really interesting was how the wardrobe backs up the character. How the suits Harvey wears help to create the persona or aura that he exudes. Isn’t that part of the reason we wear suits? Isn’t it all about perception? The perception of Harvey Specter as being one of the best lawyers in town is created in part through his suits, the majority of which feature extra wide peaked lapels and classic white shirts with cutaway collars. But let’s dive in a bit deeper and see how Tailor On Ten can get you that Harvey Specter look.

Suit No. 1 is probably our favourite of the Harvey Specter power suits. It is a single breasted, one button, light grey sharkskin two piece. Further options are 5 sleeve buttons, flapped hip and ticket pockets, side vents and large shoulder pads. This look finds a middle ground between the peaked lapel selections and one with quite a lot of versatility. If you are looking to make a bit of an impression in the office this could be a good one to start with.

Suit No. 2 is quite a modern and flashy look for Harvey. It keeps the familiar peaked lapels but they are slightly narrower than the others, affording it a more modern feel. Personal preference but I enjoy a slimmer lapel, it helps to visually broaden the shoulders and looks sharp. This suit is a single breasted, one button, gunmetal grey mohair two piece with a little added length to the jacket. It has 4 sleeve buttons, single vent, flapped hip and ticket pockets, waist suppression and a dark contrast lapel button hole that matches the tie. All in all an ensemble that I really like, although I suspect that there might be a little bit of polyester in that weave creating the sheen but Tailor On Ten has a range of Mohair/Wool blends that should do the job and will definitely feel better.

Suit No. 3 is the penultimate Harvey Specter suit, a piece that exudes power and commands respect. I’ve always had an issue with authority and instantly dislike this suit but really appreciate the personality it creates. If you want everyone to know you are the boss, this is the suit for you (not advisable if you actually aren’t the boss…). This ensemble is a mid-grey chalk stripe single breasted 3 piece with extra-wide peaked lapels. The waistcoat is a peaked design, which matches the lapels nicely, with 5 buttons. Much like the first suit it has side vents, flapped hip and ticket pockets, 5 sleeve buttons and tied up with a really big knot.

We had to add in two more suits that are quite different to the rest. They are interesting because they are some of the only suits Harvey wears that don’t directly fall into the power suit category.

Suit No. 4 is a sensational suit. A beautiful light-grey flannel 3 piece. Unlike the rest it has a notch lapel and a roll that sits higher on the chest. Usually this higher lapel would be reserved for a 3 button rolled to 2 whereas this is a 2 button and we love it. The waist coat is a peaked 4 button.

Suit No. 5 is an old-school formal favourite. A real tribute to a time of high style that fits really well with the image of Harvey Specter, a jet black Tuxedo. Out of the peaked and shawl lapel the peaked is actually the more formal of the two and this is definitely a formidable lapel! The decision to go sans black satin is a great choice and of course features a white wing-tip collared shirt and black bow tie. As an aside if you are buying a Tuxedo, historically speaking you should also wear a waistcoat or cummerbund with it as you aren’t supposed to see any waistband or shirt through the middle. That said James Bond pulled it off!

How to Dress Like Harvey Specter and Mike Ross from Suits

If USA’s hit TV show, “Suits,” doesn’t make you want to pick up an LSAT study guide and take a shot at law school, it sure as hell makes you want to get one of those Harvey Specter suits.

Suiting Up for Success

“People respond to how we’re dressed, so like it or not this is what you have to do.” – Harvey Specter

The show preaches and epitomizes the idea of “dressing for success” as all the male characters are never without an impeccably tailored suit on. Harvey Specter and Mike Ross shine the brightest – one a superstar partner and the other his freshly minted associate at fictitious law firm Pearson and Hardman . The idea of dressing for success is not a new one. It is built on the premise that what you wear contributes largely to your success in the professional world. As you probably guessed, we are huge advocates of this idea, as expressed in our “ What to Wear to an Interview ” post. Here we’ll revisit it anew in the context of the TV series, “Suits.”

When Mike Ross frustratingly asks “Why does it matter how much I spend on a suit,” Harvey quickly retorts with “People respond to how we’re dressed, so like it or not this is what you have to do.” His point being that people are making prejudiced assessments based on how we’re dressed, whether we’re cognizant or not, or whether we give a damn or not. Every moment a judgment is being made, sometimes even subconscious to the one making the judgment— is he sloppy like his suit? Why is he wearing that hideous tie? Looks like this is the first time he’s ever put on a suit…

Many men know that thick pinstripe suits often communicate that “boss” or “boardroom” look, but what about other aspects of the suits, such as peak lapels? What are you communicating when you opt for a peak lapel versus a slim notch? What do the differences mean to you, if anything?

To many, it may not mean a thing. But to those who are discerning of the details – an interviewer, a potential business partner or even that attractive blonde across the room – it may mean a lot. Just like how you wouldn’t wear a floral print shirt to a funeral, you wouldn’t want to head into a boardroom looking like this

Your Suit as the Language of Success

Dressing for success is a bit like writing, if you’re writing to communicate a message to your readers, you have to be mindful of the language, syntax, grammar and the choice of your words. Think of every element of your outfit as a word in a sentence—from the fabric of your suit to the style of your pockets. Make sure you know the meaning of each word and choose your words carefully.

Ask yourself this: What does your suit say about you? What do the details say?

The wardrobe stylists behind the characters Harvey Specter and Mike Ross in the show “Suits” obviously understand this “language.” While both characters look incredible in their well-fitting suits, the details of their looks convey two very different messages.

In the show, Mike Ross frequently wears a slimmer, more understated and conservatively (but still smartly) tailored suit (slim notch lapel, no vest, slim tie with a small four-in-hand knot), representing the young associate, a bit wet behind the ears, but quickly rising under the promising tutelage of the firm’s top star, Harvey Specter. Harvey, on the other hand, truly dresses like a boss. He’s the top closer of his firm, and his power suits convey his status at his firm perfectly. Everything in Harvey’s look evokes strength from the 3-piece suit to the spread collar and Windsor knot. This stark contrast shows how effectively an outfit can communicate a message of power.

Now we don’t blame you if you want to look like Harvey Specter. Like we said, the guy straight up looks boss. He’s there to make moves and it’s evident by his clothes alone that things have been working out rather nicely for him. Replicating a look like this requires a sensitivity to your context and the message you’re trying to get across.

Here’s the break-down of the Harvey Specter power suit look:

– a custom tailored 3-piece pinstripe suit with the following features: – flapped pockets with a ticket pocket – double-vents – boutonniere – wider peak lapels

Then add these power accessories:

– pocket square – cufflinks – pick up a custom tailored shirt and opt for spread collars and french cuffs – pick up a 3-3.5 inch width bold tie with a larger knot such as a Windsor knot

By any chance any one knows what brand and style the messenger bag that mike has is? I really like it.

Hi, just an opinion question: I am a salesmanager in an organisation responsible for advertising and marketing. That is more and more becoming a ‘non-suit-business’. My salesmen are dressing up for client meetings (although sometimes terrible) but in the office they walk around casual (or sometimes even casual is a big word). I don’t mind as long as they don’t walk around like the pulp fiction picture you posted earlier on 😉 But I do like dressing up and would like to take more of the Harvey Specter look. But I doubt as it is not really the kind of business for big shots suits. My general manager suits up every day but he buys them at a retailer. I don’t want to outsuit him or outsuit the business we are in. Is that even possible in your opinion and if so what could I still take from the Harvey Specter look?

The concept we always come back to is fit. A simple, straightforward navy or charcoal suit that fits great will look 10 times better than the flyest suit in the world if said fly suit doesn’t fit. The fit is the foundation of our suits and why so many of the photos you see on this blog look so great. After you nail the fit, if you still want to turn down the volume on the Harvey Specter look a tad more you can drop the vest and go with a notch lapel instead of a peak lapel. With these tweaks your suit will keep you looking like you’re in charge, at least of your own style, even in the presence of the boss.

I loved the dark shark skin where he wears it practically all the time, one simple question I have to you gentlemen, would it be better if we wear it with a dark blue tie or black tie.

We almost always select dark blue over black because black ties can feel sort of… black tie . A black tie pretty much locks you in to black shoes and we love gray suits with all manner of brown shoes.

That being said, there’s something to be said for the sleek mod look of all gray and black ensembles if they’re cut slim. If you’ve got the body and the suits for that look, then go for it, otherwise, stick with the dark blue ties.

Which BlackLapel suit looks most similar to the suit that Harvey’s wearing in the heading picture?

The second suit we linked to in above, this Navy Light Blue Pinstripe one , most closely resembles the one Harvey’s got on in the picture at the top. The stripes are not quite as narrowly spaced but the colors are similar and you can customize your Black Lapel one as we suggested above (with flapped pockets with a ticket pocket, double-vents, functional boutonniere and regular peak lapels (wider ones are available upon request, just email [email protected] for details).

To get the look of the suit in the photo exactly, you don’t need the third piece, but a vest definitely amps up the power in a power suit, so we suggest getting that as well.

Finding ties with the European style, left shoulder to right hip, stripes that are 3.5″ or wider is easy if you’re willing to go upmarket. European brands like Kiton, Isaia, Ermenegildo Zegna and Prada all make ties that would fit the bill. You could also drop a few bills on just one of their ties (fine by us, though, they’re pretty much all insanely good looking ties). For a more affordable Euro-style striped tie the 3.5″+ territory, check out brands like Southern Proper, Collared Greens and True Forum on Freshneck . These tie makers don’t offer most of their Euro-striped ties on their own sites, but Freshneck’s got them.

there is a specific shoe that Mike wears, in season 1 (I think) when he is asleep at the office and Jenny drops off a suit for him and Rachel brings it up for him. It is a brown leather casual Chukka boot I think. Hmmm…while many guys would probably like to get into Rachel Zane’s pants, actress Meghan Markle, who plays the paralegal, is a married woman, so we can’t help you there.

Most of Harveys suits, being tailor made, seem to have high quality wool with probably cashmere or silk. For the average guy, what kind of material should one look into getting? Because I’ve seen 100 wool and 120 wool. Is one better than the other?

You don’t have to be a big shot like Harvey to get a suit made for you with high quality fabric, you just have to come to Black Lapel! A Super 110s wool is a fine choice for a luxurious fabric that can stand up to regular wear. A suit with a higher super number will be softer and more lush due to the individual threads being smaller in thickness. However, a higher super number means it will wrinkle a little easier and will wear faster over time.

Where are Harvey’s ties coming from?? They are amazing!

Harvey often reps for the repp tie, a classic diagonally striped tie spotted in the lines of classic Americana brands like Brooks Brothers. But Harvey’s aren’t from Brooks Brothers. You can tell because the diagonals on his go the old European way (from left shoulder to right hip). These are harder to find stateside, and the big European brands can be pricey. Check out Dibi for power ties like Harvey’s with European stripes.

Nik, Harvey’s suits feature a fitted but still comfortable look. The closest equivalent for his suits and pants to the Black Lapel standard of fit options would be Tailored Fit. A little roomier than our Slim Fit and trimmer than our Standard Fit. Hope that helps!

Rick, we have to confess that we haven’t paid too much to Mike’s shoes. In fact, we don’t even think the wardrobe stylists for the show paid too much attention here other than “expensive Italian shoes” after Harvey helped Mike upgrade his office style. Scrolling through Mike’s outfits, you’ll notice that its overwhelmingly Armani dress shoes but the handful of casual outfits they show feature Converse and Clarks. Hope that helps!

Tim, no special name for these types of vests with lapels as far as we’re aware. The lapels do add to the formality of the vest and in fact will make the vest look even better on their own sans jacket. Depending on your height and the style you’re going for, we recommend anywhere from 4 to 7 buttons. Anything else you’re not sure about, just shoot our Concierge team an email at [email protected] . Just to clarify, all Harvey Specter wears is Tom Ford…. You want to pull off his look, there are no imitations…. Tom Ford is the best suit out there and all Harvey wears (with Zegna suits few and far between in his wardrobe and coming in as the second best). There are no imitations for those kind of suits. Of you spending to get the right kind of suit, people will notice. Of you go cheap on your suit, people will notice…. Makes sense….

Joe, we’re going to have to respectfully disagree with you a little on that point. We love Tom Ford’s designs, especially his wide curved lapels. And a tip of our hat to the legendary reputations both he and the Zegna house have built up over the years on quality of construction and fabrics. That said, the most important elements of a suit comes down to Fit, Fabric, and Construction. The Fit is something only you and your tailor can control and fine tune and that’s irrespective of label or price. In other words, a Tom Ford suit made for one of us isn’t going to look good on you and vice versa. Fabric is something that any reputable suit maker will painstakingly source; Tom Ford, Zegna and many other top brands all do a great job of this. Construction is an area that has a wide range of qualitative differences across brands but top brands OTR and MTM all use half-canvas to full-canvas construction and all offer the nice little touches that should come with any luxury suit.

Price doesn’t really factor into this discussion. Many top brands have incredible retail markups (as high as 90%)! Now, we won’t deny their quality or that their suits will look great on you (assuming the Fit, Fabric and Construction quality are there) or even the hard to define feeling of being able to tell yourself you’re wearing Tom Ford. But there are a new generation of brands (ours included) that provide an equivalent (and sometimes better) quality of Fit, Fabric and Construction quality without that retail markup (for distribution, wholesale profit, sales commissions, brick & mortar store overhead, etc). More power to you if you can afford to drop $2,000+ on your suits but we’d like to disrupt the status quo with a more affordable alternative for you. We hope you’ll give us a try some day soon! 🙂

Any idea what tie Harvey Specter is wearing in Season 2, Episode 11 (second half). You can see it best 36 minutes into the episode. The tie is navy with a gold pattern.

Those are nice briefcases, but not the one he uses. He has a super slim tapered hard attache that I think is by Brioni (camera passes by too fast to get a clear look). I’ve been trying to find a good one for a while, any idea who still makes those? I can’t find it in any of the Brioni catalogues.

How come Harvey never wears a boutonniere? (yet you mention he does/should)

By “boutonniere,” we were referring the to lapel buttonholes (and not a flower/accessory) which is a quite prevalent in a lot of his suits. Hope that clears things up!

i like a windsor collar and overhand windsor knot or a collar bar and four in hand. always a white collar and white french cuffs on a solid, vertical stripe or windowpane body. no pastels. pocket square is just that, square.

Looks like more of a half-Windsor knot to me, which (IMO) is the largest knot one should use.

/disagree. Windsor knots are the only type I’ll wear, anything else looks shabby (off-centre, lop-sided, too small, wrong length). This is a matter of personal taste. And Harvey’s are all full Windsors.

Hey James, by “wider peak lapel” we meant wider than Mike’s slim lapels. While you can go wider, the standard peak lapels are probably your best median between practicality and achieving the “power” look. Hope that helps!

What is the approximate width of your standard peak lapels? Can they be made larger upon request?

How to dress like Suits star Harvey Specter

A guide in expert suiting.

What is the first thing you think of when the name Harvey Specter comes to mind? If you’re a long time fan of the show  Suits,  then we bet that Harvey’s impeccable dressing standards would be it. And we don’t blame you.

Considered the James Bond of the high-stakes court room, Harvey provides a masterclass in suitable attire. “People respond to how we’re dressed, so like it or not this is what you have to do.” Thank you, Sir.

Get Harvey’s Best Looks

The Harvey Specter style incorporates sharp and polished details within all of his suits – close cut, peak lapels and flapped pockets – while his shoulders are strong and there is a firmness in the sleeve heads, which creates a powerful look, to his confident persona.

He avoids suits that exaggerate his shoulders and arms, allowing for a modern and contemporary fit. He tends to steer clear of of extremely-wide lapels, heavy pinstripes, braces, cutaway collars and statement socks which is becoming increasingly out-dated.

The Three-piece Suit

One thing that actor Harvey does well is the three-piece. A three-piece suit allows for easy, understated style without having to bother with colours and patterns. Once you find the perfect fit, keep the ensemble tonal with the addition of a simple white shirt, matching tie and subtle lapel detail on the waist coat. Harvey always leaves the button undone and even when his jacket is off, he looks top-notch.

Harvey always keeps it simple, whilst avoiding to over-accessorise his tailoring, occasionally adopting a neatly folded pocket-square for special events.

He looks to classic textiles like dark, high-twist worsted wools or wool-blends with a touch of silk for added luxury (we recommend not going to crazy on the silk to avoid dating your look). He steers clear from most pattern and opts for a plain, monochrome ensemble – if blue is thrown into the mix it is always an elegant navy. He also keeps his cufflinks simple on a French cuff.

Harvey Specter has swagger . He’s a fictional character with epic and enviable confidence. He dresses to impress. He knows that image is one of the keys to getting everything that he wants, including money, prestige and women. His goal is to win and he dresses accordingly.

Spend As Much As You Can Afford To On Your Suits…You Won’t Regret It

Harvey is always decked out in costly suits. The show is called Suits and Harvey Specter, who is portrayed by handsome and gifted actor, Gabriel Macht, is the show’s leading style icon. His suits have strong silhouettes, whether they’re two-piece or three-piece designs. Go for suits with wide lapels. Wider-than-average lapels help to create the V-shaped torso look that is really the epitome of masculine power dressing. Think Clark Kent, right before he turns into Superman.

Other design elements to watch for include high-end fabrics, such as silk-and-wool blends or worsted wools, and high armholes. Structured shoulders are also a must. It ended up black and Macht needed to color his hair every fourteen days to maintain his darker locks. Eventually, he asked to go lighter and producers agreed. Whatever your hair color, it’s important to build height into your hairstyle, at the crown.

Ask for a cut with plenty of length on top, so you have enough length to create height. The sides should be cut short, without being buzzed. In terms of styling, you’ll need a hard part on one side.   This is what  Harvey Specter  replied when Mike Ross asked him: “Why does it matter how much I spend on a suit?”.

Harvey Specter and Mike Ross are the irrepressible duo and stars of the  US hit series “Suits” , a drama about one of the best and sharpest lawyer of New York, who hires a brilliant college-dropout.

And Harvey is absolutely right. Often people have prejudices based on how we’re dressed. So, in order to make a good first impression we will show you how to  customize your own Harvey Specter suit ! For the chest pockets and for those in the front you can choose the option that you prefer:  no pockets, 2,3,4,… We recommend choosing “ Wall Street Blue ” as the fabric, a dark blue pinstripe fabric made of 80% wool and 20% terylene. You can also add a blue  pocket square , which always is an eye catcher.

Now that you have all the information about customizing the suit, you just need some more accessories to make the look perfect:

… A white shirt  with cutaway collar and french cuffs.  These are important, because you will be able to wear  cufflinks , which will add up to the overall successful look.

… A blue tie , either simple or with a pattern.

It’s time to customize your own Harvey Specter suit and “dress to impress” with Hockerty!

Typical of Harvey Specter's outfits are the blue pinstripes. Of course we offer this style on our website. It is important to pay attention: your model has to have a single breasted style with 2 buttons, long and peak lapels, the 3 pockets with flap, the chest pocket and the sleeve buttons with real holes.

As for the fit of the suit,  Harvey Specter wears it in a classical way, and his jacket has side vents to its back. The importance lies on the number of buttons when customizing the  waistcoat . In “Suits”  Harvey Specter wears  his with 6 buttons, the lowest unbuttoned. The finishing is diagonal. The  pants  are rather regular, but yet elegant. How to Dress Like Harvey Specter: Suits, Shoes, Ties & More (2023)

Harvey Specter’s style is legendary.

Portrayed by Gabriel Macht in the hit USA network show Suits , if there’s one thing New York’s best closer is associated with most, it is his power suits and formal wear.

From the 3 piece suits to the peaked lapels, there’s always something to set his sartorial looks apart.

In this article, we’ll delve deep into each aspect of Harvey Specter’s formal suit style, his accessories, his black tie style, and how you can dress like Harvey Specter.

If you want to dress like Harvey in a casual setting, check out this article that I’ve written on Harvey’s casual clothing , which goes over several of his outfits from the show, and what you can take from them.

Harvey Specter’s Style

Harvey Specter’s style is classic and versatile, and makes him appear more dominant by visually broadening his chest and making him look taller. As a general rule, his colour combinations and accessories are simple, and his clothes fit perfectly, making his style professional and methodical.

You can dress like Harvey Specter by wearing dark slim fit two buttoned suits with 4″ peaked lapels and ticket pockets, a white spread collar shirt with barrel cuffs, and simple accessories, such as dark 8cm silk ties, tied with a large knot, dark classic shoes, and white pocket squares.

One of his best quotes is “people respond to how we dress”. From this, we can connote that he doesn’t dress well because he enjoys it, but because he has to to get ahead – it’s functional.

On top of this, the field of law has traditional and conservative dress standards, which he is required to stick to.

Both of these reasons explain why his style is so simple and unadventurous, but put together; as a result, s ome (me) may consider Harvey’s clothing to be boring.

But if you’re a beginner looking to improve your clothing game, Harvey Specter is the prefect person to look towards for establishing a good base formal wardrobe.

However, despite the apparent conventional nature of his wardrobe, he does opt for particular details in his clothing (covered next) that help him to exert dominance, assertiveness and confidence.

But enough from me, here are some words from Gabriel Macht about Harvey Specter’s style:

Harvey Specter Suits

Harvey’s suits are usually in dark, professional colours, like navy, charcoal, or medium grey (and on a few cases brown or champagne), and as aforementioned, usually all feature similar details:

• Two buttons
• Wool material
• Subtle or no pattern
• Wide peaked lapel
• Ticket pocket
• Double vent
• Structured shoulders
• Side adjusters
• Medium rise trousers.

You may be thinking ‘whoa, that’s a lot to take in’ . This next section will explore this anatomy of a typical Harvey Specter suit in detail, explain what each part is, and how you can get it.

Two Buttons

Most of Harvey’s suits feature two buttons with a neutral button stance, meaning his looks are balanced. Two buttons on the suit jacket is the most classic button configuration, an

On some occasions, Harvey brings in different button configurations, such as:

• Two roll one – A suit with a ‘two roll one’ buttoning configuration buttons like a two button suit, but has a third button hole in the lapel, not intended for fastening.
• Three buttoned – On some occasions in the later seasons, Harvey wore three buttoned suit jackets.
• Double breasted Y formation – Harvey wears a double breasted suit to Mike’s wedding.

Wool Material

Harvey’s suits are usually constructed from high quality 100% worsted wool fabric, presumably from historical mills.

Some of his suits in the later seasons also feature a subtle shine, suggesting a blend with a material such as silk.

If you’re a beginner, I would recommend looking for suits that feature 100% wool fabric.

Subtle or No Pattern

His suits are regularly just block colours, like navy, blue, or some shade of grey.

However, he sometimes brings in stripe patterns or checks, like chalk stripe, or windowpane checks.

These are equally as formal as block colours, but work to add a bit more visual interest to his conservative attire.

All of his suits feature a trimmed cut, and sit close to the body.

An exception can be seen in some of his early suits, where the trousers could perhaps be slightly oversized and flair out.

How to Get The Look – Slim Cut

Harvey would still look good in a suit, even if it didn’t have all of his special detailing, if it fit him correctly.

When you’re out buying your suit, make sure it fits properly, or take it to a tailor to have it adjusted.

If there’s one thing you take from this article, please let it be this, as it also applies to any piece of clothing you wear.

Wide Peaked Lapel

In the scenes set in the present day, almost all of Harvey’s ensembles feature wide peaked lapels.

They increase the formality level of the suit, visually broaden his shoulders and chest, and add to his already masculine physique.

On top of this, it’s a clear indication of premium clothing and works to cement his place as a leader in his field, and show he is at the top of the rank hierarchy.

More practically, wide peaked lapels add just enough visual interest to make his otherwise typical jacket stand out.

Ticket Pocket

Like the peaked lapels, a ticket pocket is usually an indicator of quality clothing, and makes the suit jacket stand out slightly.

It’s found on Harvey’s right, above the regular pocket, and is a traditionally English nuance.

Double Vent

Most suit jackets feature a ‘double vent’ , that is, two slits at the back of the suit jacket that create a flap.

Harvey’s suits are no exception.

The double vent gives the greatest mobility to the suit wearer compared to other vent types. Therefore, you should aim for your suit jacket to also have double vents, unless you are wearing a tuxedo.

Fortunately, this shouldn’t be such a hard task as it is the standard for most suits.

Structured Shoulders

All of his suits feature strong, structured shoulders, that again build up his frame. This is achieved by loading up the shoulder area with padding, and is very typical of English style suiting.

Side Adjusters

Most of Harvey’s trousers feature tab side adjusters.

Not only are they an indicator of quality tailoring, but are very functional, allowing you to adjust your trouser waist to fit you exactly (helping you survive after a large client lunch).

Though they are only seen when he takes his jacket off, they are, in my opinion, one of the best details of his sartorial wardrobe.

How to Get The Look – Side Adjusters

Though typically uncommon, trousers with side adjusters can be found at speciality retailers, such as Suitsupply.

On top of this, it is actually possible to add side adjusters to suit trousers that don’t initially have them. All you will need is a good tailor, and some extra suit fabric.

So, if you find a suit that you like, and it doesn’t have side adjusters, get a longer pair of trousers (to get the extra fabric), and have a tailor take your trousers up, and use the removed fabric to create side adjusters.

It’s what I’ve done for some of my trousers, and the results are awesome.

Most of Harvey’s trousers feature a full break, the most classic trouser finish.

How to Get The Look – Full Break

Most brick and mortar suit shops will pin your trousers up and ask you what type of trouser finish you want.

Simply ask for a ‘full break’, or show them a picture of one of Harvey Specter’s suits, and they should be able to emulate the style.

Outfit Example: Blue Suit

Packaged together, all of the above items produce the following look:

Furthermore, this image alone cements the importance of fit – even if all of Harvey’s other styling preferences remained constant, if the suit were two sizes too big, it would look terrible.

So, that’s Harvey’s typical suit for you – next, let’s take a look at some variations that add to, or alter, his standard look.

Harvey Specter’s Vests

Sometimes Harvey opts for a 3 piece suit, which signals the inclusion of a matching waistcoat (or vest) along with the jacket and trousers.

This raises the formality level of the suit, and again reinforces his stance as a confident character , as many men shy away from this item.

Though, he does sometimes make the faux pas of buttoning his jacket while wearing a waistcoat.

I would suggest not emulating this detail, as an open suit jacket when wearing a waistcoat produces a much more flattering look.

Harvey’s vests:

• Are always single breasted
• Never feature a lapel
• Always match exactly with the suit he is wearing (he does not wear odd waistcoats)
• Usually have 6 buttons
• Usually have the bottom button unbuttoned , as per correct vest etiquette. For assistance with this, I’ve written a guide on which waistcoat buttons you should button .

Harvey’s vests are especially welcome as his trousers feature side adjusters, which, unlike a belt, do not break the line of the waistcoat.

Other Suits

Three buttoned suit.

On occasions, specifically throughout season 6, Harvey wears a three buttoned suit.

I personally feel it doesn’t work well with the peaked lapels, and produces a strange, overly elongated and rather dated look.

Harvey Specter’s Double Breasted Suit

Harvey wears a double breasted suit to Mike’s wedding. Though it doesn’t get a lot of screen time, and spends most of the time unbuttoned, it’s a good look, and in Harvey’s eyes a special item, for a special occasion.

What brand of suit does Harvey Specter wear?

Many wonder what brand of suits Harvey Specter wears.

Harvey Specter exclusively wears Tom Ford suits in the early seasons, Gucci suits in the flashback sequences, and bespoke Garrison suits in the later seasons. Regardless of which brand of suit he is wearing, the details and fit of the garments stay generally consistent.

Tom Ford suits retail for around £2,000 – £4,000, and Garrison suits are only available in Canada on special order, with varying prices depending on the fabric.

Conclusion – Harvey Specter’s Suit Style

It’s hard to find a suit with all of the features found on Harvey’s, but it can be done – they all work together to produce a certain ‘style’, so if a suit has one, it will likely have some of the others.

Hitting all of the suit nuances is a difficult task, but that’s why it’s so powerful – you will likely be the only one with the styling options, setting you apart.

Again, I would recommend Suitsupply as your best bet.

Harvey Specter’s Shirts

Harvey Specter’s shirts are usually muted colours, such as white or sky blue, feature a cutaway or spread collar, barrel cuffs, and a H.S. monogram. In the earlier seasons, some of Harvey’s shirts featured coloured blue or pink vertical butcher, Budd, or bar code stripes .

Harvey Specter Shirt Colours & Patterns

Harvey’s shirts are usually block white , but are also occasionally light blue, pink, or grey.

On occasion, most notably in the earlier seasons, he does wear striped shirts, which I feel adds a bit of much needed interest to his typically safe attire.

These stripes even combine with some of his rarer colours, such as pink and sky blue, to produce some sharp combinations.

These striped shirts bring some much needed warmth into Harvey Specter’s style and outfits, and in my opinion elevate his style greatly.

If you’re looking to bring some of his style into your wardrobe, I would recommend looking into these type conservative, striped shirts. They brighten you up and make your look more personable than a ‘down to business’ white shirt, but retain much of the formality.

In all cases, Harvey pairs the colour of the shirt with a subtly textured tie of a similar colour.

Matching Shirt and Ties Like Harvey

In the below collage:

• With the blue striped shirts, Harvey pairs a textured navy tie.
• With the pink striped shirt, Harvey pairs a textured purple tie.

All of these combinations match within colour pallet – the blues with the blues, and reds with the reds. This is a really easy way to skilfully match coloured pieces, and allows Harvey to guarantee the combination will work, and still look professional.

In this instance, he has introduced patterns into both is tie and shirt:

Though both patterns are stripes, he makes sure to keep the patterns to different sizes.

So, his shirt has finer stripes, while his tie has thicker, and further spaced stripes.

This actively differentiates between the two, and provided the colours within the items work together, they will look good.

Harvey’s shirts fit well, though I feel are sometimes slightly on the baggy side, and could do with slight tapering in in the midsection.

However, this enables comfort, and the excess fabric doesn’t look too bad as it hangs rather well.

That said, his shirts, especially the through the arms, the sleeve length and neck, all fit perfectly, especially the one pictured above.

Some of Harvey’s shirts feature a monogram in the non-traditional location of the left cuff.

This very ‘typical’ Specter detail is usually accomplished in a blue thread, as pictured below, or in a more subtle grey.

The best thing is that some shirt makers, such as Charles Tyrwhitt , actually offer this service, so you too can emulate this detail rather easily.

Harvey Specter’s Shirt Brand

Harvey Specter wears shirts from a variety of top fashion brands, such as Brioni, Canali, Tom Ford, Zenga, D&G and Thomas Pink, and lesser known houses such as Fairfax, Bergdorf Goodman, Eterna and Charvet.

Where to get Harvey Specter’s Shirts

Harvey’s typical white shirts are classically styled, so will likely be easy to come by in most retail stores.
