2004 Sea Ray 390 Motor Yacht

Combining intelligent features with sensible styling, the 390 Motor Yacht offers a great deal more than a pretty face. You'll enjoy her impressive, roomy interior, smart engineering, ample sleeping accommodations and breathtaking cockpit view. And her optinal twin 480 hp Cummins Diesels inboards power this 39-footer to her destination with ease. Step aboard and you'll quickly see why the 390 Motor Yacht is the new standard in its class.

The Sea Ray 390 Motor Yacht represents one of the most versatile layouts of any production model in this size range.  The expansive interior volume features two staterooms on opposite ends of the boat, allowing for maximum privacy for both owners and guests.

Combining intelligent features with sensible styling, the 390 Motor Yacht offers a great deal more than a pretty face.  You'll enjoy her impressive, roomy interior, smart engineering, ample sleeping accomodations and breathtaking aft deck view.  Step aboard and you'll quickly see why the 390 Motor Yacht is the standard in its class!

Entry to the Aft Deck is made via the transom swim platform up a few steps or through the port and starboard doors.  This area will amaze you as you are provided a full 360 degree panorama of the surrounding landscape...in full air conditioned comfort.  There is plenty of seating for you and your guests and entertainment is made easy by the wet bar complete with sink, storage and refrigerator.  Weather too good outside to miss?  Simply roll up the aft canvas and isenglass enclosure or just open the port and starboard doors to get a rush of fresh air.  Do not worry about storage here, there is plenty underneath the seats.

Moving forward to the helm area, you are provided and commanding view, comfortable adjustable helm chair, and full electronics at your disposal. The fully enclosed windshield is truly unique in a vessel of this type, it was rare in this vintage but now the industry standard.  It provides less maintenance and clearer visibility, but it will never feel stuffy thanks to the A/C and 3 openings to provide plenty of fresh air if desired.

Going into the main cabin, the Salon is a socially warming area with large comfortable facing sofas surrounded by rich cherry wood appointments and a convertible dinette/coffee table.  Feel free to spread out and relax with a cold drink, there is plenty of space to do so.  The entertainment center with flat screen TV will keep you occupied after those long days on the water.  The Starboard sofa even pulls out to convert to a berth should you have more guests aboard.

The full beam master stateroom located in the aft end of the vessel offers a full double berth with separate shower and head compartments with the vanity in the middle.  This master is very large for a vessel this size and makes extended stays on the boat easy and accommodating.  There is also plenty of storage, from dual cedar lined closets to multiple drawers to a large storage area underneath the bed.  A little mentioned but very important feature here are the independent A/C controls that allow you to stay comfortable in your private domain.

The unique forward VIP stateroom by day provides ample floor space and storage for guests to change from swim suits to social attire with ease.  By night, the port single berth becomes a lounge chair and the starboard single converts to a double berth, allowing you to have a versatile platform for housing guests.  She also features and independent A/C control so your guests will feel comfortable and at home.  There is a full size double entry head with separate shower for your guests comfort as well.

In summary, this is one amazing vessel that packs the features of a much larger yacht into a manageable size.  You will feel right at home staying aboard in total comfort, why compromise when you can have it all!

The beautiful Salon is spacious and bright and will will make you and your guests feel at home!

Sea Ray 390 Motor Yacht

  • By George Sass, Jr.
  • Updated: October 4, 2007

During a recent vacation in South Florida I found myself immersed in a conversation with a knowledgeable yachtsman. He had recently sold a 55-foot convertible, and still owned a 35-foot express yacht and a 28-foot sportfisherman. Like anybody with the yachting bug, he was already contemplating his next purchase. What was at top on his list? Another Sea Ray . He had owned several during his yachting career and had had the most fun on his fleet of Sea Ray s ranging from 31 to 40 feet. In his opinion, they offered great volume and creature comforts, and the company’s commitment to customer care stood out among the pool of boatbuilders.

If he is still in the market, I would urge him to take a look at Sea Ray ‘s 390 Motor Yacht. The cruiser builds on the company’s venerable reputation for solid family cruisers backed by first-class service. Her big sister, the 480 Motor Yacht, introduced the 390’s profile to the yachting public. With these two motoryachts, Sea Ray has fine-tuned design elements first put to paper four decades ago by builders such as Chris-Craft and Hatteras.

One of her most notable features is the helm deck area. While cruising along the Tennessee River near Knoxville, Tennessee, in the boiling summer heat, we found ourselves cooled by the optional 16,000 BTU air conditioning system on the helm deck. This area is a sensible hybrid between an express boat with an open helm area that puts guests and driver together, and a flying bridge model that offers good visibility and shelter. Furthermore, if you cruise with young children, closing off the side decks with acrylic doors keeps everybody close and eliminates some of the hassle of lifting smaller kids to the bridge and constantly keeping an eye on the hatch as they scramble around.

The wet bar with a trash receptacle and ice maker (an optional refrigerator can take its place) is abaft the helm seat. Be sure to order the optional aft bench seat and table. Our party found this the perfect perch to sit back and enjoy the cruise while staying hydrated. The position also makes an ideal spot for outdoor dining.

The helm is outfitted to the level you would expect from Sea Ray and is an obvious result of the company’s massive research and development program. Both throttle and gear controls are angled for ease of use. The gauges satisfy a pet peeve of mine and are placed appropriately in the line of sight for a helmsman moving at 20-plus knots. Sea Ray also offers a standard Raymarine electronics package and builds the dash to accommodate it. The well-planned area is accented with a handsome burl. Also, docking and close-quarters maneuvering is a breeze thanks to the expansive aluminum windshield and a properly placed transom door, which allows the helmsman to see the swim platform. Five wide steps lead from the helm deck to the swim platform.

Our test boat was equipped with twin 370 hp MerCruiser 8.1 gas engines turning a set of four-blade 23-by-22-inch props. If you’re looking to do a little more extended cruising, Sea Ray offers twin Cummins 480CEs. With the gas package, expect a peppy performance. We achieved a top speed of 25 knots and a cruising speed of around 20 knots. Best of all, the 390 is quiet, especially on the helm deck. The highest decibel reading we got was 79 at wide open throttle. Bearing in mind the level for normal conversation is about 65 decibels, this reading is very respectable.

Our inland testing ground didn’t allow for any worthwhile sea-state challenges. But the 390 should easily satisfy her role as a comfortable coastal cruiser. Without a bridge, she has a low center of gravity, decreasing roll. Her sharp entry and 15-degree deadrise aft creates an easily driven hull form that is quick to plane and agile, especially considering all the creature comforts. While maneuvering through tight quarters on the river, she felt solid and surefooted.

Her comfort side is immediately noticeable when entering the saloon. Port and starboard settees offer a sensible seating pattern and benefit from large side windows. You can sit at either settee and see out. Better yet, Sea Ray incorporated a forward windshield that benefits both the saloon and forward galley area. The interior is tastefully outfitted with Ultraleather and cherry. A natural maple interior is also offered.

The well-equipped galley is placed out of the saloon. I’m a fan of this type of arrangement, since it keeps the mess often associated with a little onboard cooking away from the “living area. Sea Ray ‘s designers did a nice job of ensuring the breakfast bar is low, so the cook is still part of the saloon conversation. A bonus area is the utility room under the steps that can easily absorb the optional combination washer/dryer. Sea Ray ensures every corner of space is utilized for stowage, resulting in a galley that rivals those aboard many 50-foot yachts.

The forward head is accessible from the passageway and forward cabin. This seems so basic, but recently I’ve noticed that more and more boats, larger than the 390, funnel their weary-eyed, matted-hair guests through the main cabin each morning as they make their way to the guest head.

The guest stateroom layout also works well, accommodating a small family or a boatload of weekend guests. The starboard berth converts to a full berth, and a twin berth is to port. Again, stowage is everywhere, and touches such as a full-length hanging locker and optional TV/VCR/stereo combination create a comfortable place to steal away. An overhead hatch provides light and a fresh breeze.

The master stateroom enjoys a nice separation from the forward accommodations and can be sealed off from the saloon with a door. The queen berth rivals many shoreside beds with an innerspring mattress and plenty of stowage below accessed via gas-assisted actuators. The MSD compartment and shower are separated by a vanity. This makes the best use of the space. An escape hatch abaft the berth and four opening ports bring in light. Both captain and mate will have plenty of room to hang clothes, thanks to two hanging lockers.

The engineroom has easy-to-service systems and neat and tidy workmanship. Wiring runs are clean and benefit from color-coded labeling. The engines and generator have a dedicated starting battery, and there are two house batteries also in place.

After making a long inspection of the 390, it’s easy to see why so many yachting enthusiasts flock to the Sea Ray family, and why those who head out on their own often look to return. Perhaps they hope to recapture the good old days of yachting that drew them to the sport in the first place.

Okay, we all talked about it, so I am going to start it! I will be closing on and taking delivery of my "new" 390 MY next week. Immediately upon delivery I will be taking it on a "shake down" journey over 200 miles to home. I plan on getting a Go Pro and documenting this journey up the Ohio and Kanawha Rivers. I am getting super pumped about the journey but hope the weather, and the river, cooperates as it has rained for over a week! Will keep everyone posted, but I invite all 390/40 MY owners to chime in and describe your boat, year, etc and pictures would be great! Let's get to know each other and our boats! Rob

  • May 8, 2016

Rob, SO excited for you!! I've had mine for half of a season... made all sorts of mods this winter... was all geared up to move her to the harbor this weekend... and... devastating news when they put her back in the water... Starboard fuel tank leaking on the bottom... non repairable, has to be replaced which is a major, major job. They are pressure testing the port tank to see if it is compromised or not and if not, rig the engines to run off one tank so I can get early season in as I have to order the new tanks to be manufactured. Truly knocked the wind out of me in terms of my plans for the season. I started an insurance claim on a wing and a prayer but my broker says he's not sure if it's covered or not. We will see. Anyhow... they tell me that this is a one in a million thing to have happen. By the time I get this done, the boat will essentially be brand new, which is crazy... because I have fixed or replaced just about everything else back to new or better. Soon as I get my hands on her I will post pics and describe the mods I have done as it is really hard to find concrete info about these boats on the web. Good luck and God's speed on your journey! Ken

Rob, Congratulations on the new boat and safe travels. Also, thank you for taking the initiative to get this going, I hope the moderators see it and classify it appropriately so we can always find it easily. Our 390MY is a 2004 with Cummins Diesels, bow thruster, helm heat and air, an Onan 16kw generator and the standard Sea Ray electronics package that included a GPS, Chart Plotter, Radar and Auto-Pilot. We have owned it for two years and have traveled the southern part of Lake Michigan getting used to her. She was bought new here and we are the second owners. I have the luxury of having another 390MY owner three slips down, who has owned his boat for 10 years. We have had no real problems for a boat that is now 13 years old. One windshield leak (port side lower) that I keep trying to chase down and have replaced a couple of sump pumps is all. We changed the mattress in the Main Stateroom to a Comfortaire Sleep Number mattress. And I added another electrical outlet and antenna connection on the Port Helm doorpost so we could set a television on the port helm shelf by the stairs. This summer I am converting the lighting to LED by just replacing the bulbs. Also this summer, I am planning to be a "live aboard" to determine if any modifications or adjustments are necessary for our planned retirement time on the boat. We have trips planned to Chicago (in June for the America's Cup races and another in late July for the Tall Ships) and another time just to visit, South Haven, MI for the Sea Ray get together in August, and Saugatuk just because we like to visit their shops and restaurants. Our most adventurous trip to date will come in late June when we set off for Mackinaw Island. We plan to spend a couple of nights but have 10 days allocated for the entire excursion and are hoping for good weather. I would not consider myself an expert on our wonderful boats, but do have some knowledge and am more than willing to share any of it as well as ideas and opinions for what they are worth. If anyone is ever in the Michigan City area and wants to drop in, be sure to look us up, or if you need a hand we are happy to help. We plan to have this boat as long as we are in boating, so I look forward to a long and mutually beneficial thread that has been started here.

Ken, so sorry to hear about the fuel tank issue. I had the same issue on my Silverton MY. In that one, I was able to cut the salon floor out to remove the bad tank and put the new one in. Hopefully you get yours resolved timely and at lowest cost. Earl, thanks for the post on your 390, it sounds like a great boat! After we take delivery of ours and become more familiar with it, I will post updates. I would love to see pics of everyone's boat as well and I will be sure to post pics of mine soon. Plan on taking a GoPro to document our trip. Rob

Guys, okay, tomorrow is the big day and taking delivery of the 390 and traveling 240 miles to home. I do have a question that came up in the survey. The port engine ran 200 rpms less than the starboard engine, yet the surveyor or guy from the marina seemed to think that was a big deal. I have never had a twin engine boat that was off that much between the engines. Any thoughts from the group? Rob

  • May 12, 2016

Rob, Mine runs within 100-150 rpm of each other in general... then I hit the magic button on the right hand wall at the helm that has the engines match rpm.. and they are exact. Not sure if that helps.. but mine is also not spot on with that rpm match device deactivated. Ken

For diesels 200 rpm would be a big difference. Our previous boat had Mecruisers and there was less than 100 rpm difference between engines at WOT but I am not sure what is acceptable. Safe travels, I look forward to your trip reports.

Everyone, made it safe, but quite a journey! The boat performed flawlessly but gas mileage is not great! Not a marina or gas dock between Cincinnati and Gallipolis Ohio...200 miles! Had to have a fuel truck meet us in Portsmouth Ohio to refuel while sucking fumes. Very scary situation. Had to try and tie off to a makeshift work dock covered in mud in a strong current since there are no docks in Portsmouth either! Faced fields of heavy debris and high waters and heavy downpours the entire trip. Loved how the boat performed but would have preferred better conditions to make that trip. So now the question, can anyone tell me how the stereo is setup? It appears there are two power amps with one amp powering the sub with one amp powering the speakers. The issue I have is that the speakers in the cabin work fine, but the speakers in the cockpit do not work, but the sub does. Since the sub works, I assume the selector switch to select cockpit speakers is okay, and since the speakers in the cabin work, I assume the power amp is okay that powers the speakers. Any thoughts? Rob

  • May 16, 2016

Update on stereo situation...appears there is a service bulletin out on this issue with this amp and head set up. After winter layups or if the power is lost to the unit, it appears there is a reprogramming sequence to go through that corrects the situation. Went through the steps and the stereo came to life! Hello Hope thus post is in right place. We have purchased a 390 Motor Yatch last week. Lake Effect is a 2004. We are doing our maiden voyage from Whitby, Ontario to Britt, Ontario vis the Trent River Canal It's interesting so far. We have two problems. The Raymarine just stopped. Not sure why but we are using Navionics too. Our generator also stopped. Because we have at least 5 days more we will stop to have a mechanic look at it. Hope it's an easy fix. It's a beautiful ride though. Gil Ps it was a fish stuck in the impellor. Check the Raymarine and can't find the problem. Would be nice to have a backup.

Hello all. I am curious about the built-in swim platform at the stern of the MY 390. How deep is the area, front to back? Does anyone fish from this platform? Are there any good aftermarket extended platforms that would help create a larger area for fishing? Would installing a railing system help for fishing? Thanks in advance!

Good luck! I'm digging that sun shade!

ksweet88 said: Good Morning! Quick update on my saga... the service center and I figured a way to install new gas tanks without taking the boat completely apart... the salon was emptied, carpet and boards taken up to access the engines... we constructed a beam system to jack up the engines one by one, move out of the way to take old leaking tank up... cut it and get it out the doorway. Then.. the new tanks were re-engineered to fit through the door... only 23" vs 25".. I lost 8% fuel capacity.. but that was better than taking the entire boat apart and wasting the entire season. I attached pics of the new tanks that just arrived from Florida Marine (who turned around the engineering spec and manufactured with lightning speed so I could enjoy the best part of the season). Also.. while she was up on blocks, I had a large marine parasol installed on the back platform to give a shaded area (on the extended platform). Can;t wait to get her in the water.. shooting for next weekend.. we will see. alot of things have to get put back together and tested. At that time I will document all the upgrades from last winter as I promised. Hope you all are having an awesome season so far! Ken View attachment 45112 View attachment 45113 Click to expand...

The factory platform is pretty narrow, I'm guessing just under 3ft. Swimplatforms.com makes a great extended platform. Many members here have them, there are photos posted above of a boat with them (the one with the sun shade). Railing systems are popular in Australia and Europe...not so much over here but anything is possible.

One more quick question... Has anyone taken a 390/40 MY across 30 to 60 miles of open ocean? For example, from Southern California to Catalina or maybe South Florida to Bimini? I live in North County San Diego, and would like to make the trip to Catalina a few times a year. How does the MY do in that type of situation?

2005 Sea Ray 390 Motor Yacht

The Sea Ray 390 Motor Yacht is one of the best layouts for enjoying being on the water or in the marina.

The helm with a double helm seat has excellent visibility and the spacious aft deck with lots of seating, wet bar with fridge all only few steps away. There's no forward canvas to fool with, and clear doors to the side decks with high SS rails all the way forward to the anchor/windlass and back. Access from the aft deck to the swim platform and swim ladder is down a few steps with sturdy handrail - secure and safe. This is a well-designed motor yacht for having fun on the water whether entertaining a crowd or enjoying a romantic evening under the stars.

Entering the salon from the helm through a solid cabin door and down a few steps you enter into an open and airy space with lots of beautiful wood trim and cabinets, luxurious plush seating, and stunning blend of beautiful fabrics, surrounded by large windows for great natural light and broad views.   Forward and a few steps down is an almost as beautiful fully equipped galley with lots of natural lighting and storage, and a beautiful rich hardwood floor. Effortlessly lift the steps with the gas assist struts and the washer/dryer combo is conveniently right there ready to handle a load of beach towels and t-shirts. The forward cabin has a double bunk arrangement with one bunk being a double. Across form the galley is a large full sized head equipped with a well-lit vanity and sink, vaccuflush, and a separate shower enclosure.

Saving the best for last is the full beam master aft cabin is accessed from the back of the salon through a solid hardwood door for privacy. The beautiful custom cherry built in furniture is gorgeous while being very functional. A large island bed with night stands on both sides, with luxurious fabrics, more wood trim, and large window. Add the ensuite separate head and shower compartments and you have your own private oasis.
