RBYC celebrates 175 years

bermuda royal yacht club

The Royal Bermuda Yacht Club is celebrating its 175th anniversary by launching a new scholarship fund making year-round sailing more accessible to young sailors. A celebration to mark the anniversary will take place at the RBYC this Sunday. Invited dignitaries, guests and members will enjoy a sail past, speeches and a brunch overlooking the club’s marina. The scholarship fund which has been championed by Geovanni Hayward, a sailing instructor, will provide a 50 per cent bursary for up to 15 students for any of RBYC’s programmes. These include sailing lessons, powerboat training and first-aid training. The fund is available to every resident child aged between eight and 18 years of age and is based on merit and financial need along with the recommendation of a sailing instructor and the Next Generation Fund Selection Committee. Nathan Bailey, RBYC sailing director, said: “Children who are exposed to sailing at a young age learn self-confidence, spatial awareness, agility, independence, decision-making skills, responsibility and discipline. All skills acquired can be very helpful in a child’s development leading to better concentration and can help overall academic success. “Of course, one of our favourite things about youth sailing is the benefits of being outside in the fresh air, meeting new friends and spending some time away from digital and electronic devices.”The RBYC was established on November 1, 1844 and is one of the oldest yacht clubs in the world. It also has a rich maritime history with the club’s patron Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II visiting Bermuda in 1994 to help to celebrate the 150th Anniversary, the introduction of a world class inclusive youth sailing programme and its marina supporting the 35th America’s Cup.One of the biggest developments for the club over the years has been the RBYC Sailing Academy developed from the original WaterWise programme. It became Bermuda’s first Royal Yachting Association [RYA] accredited Training Centre, with students receiving internationally recognised certifications upon completion.RBYC is best known for international events such as the Gold Cup and the biennial Newport Bermuda Race and the King Edward VII Gold Cup match racing event, currently sponsored by Argo Group. Some of the world’s most successful competitors have won the King Edward VII Gold Cup including seven-time winner Sir Russell Coutts who was largely responsible for bringing the 35th edition of the America’s Cup to Bermuda in 2017.Jonathan Corless, commodore of RBYC, said: “Throughout the club’s history but particularly more recently, there have been drastic changes to the styles of sailing, the boats, equipment and racing. It is important for us as a leading club to continue to recognise that history while continuing to position ourselves to meet these challenges and develop what the club has to offer both on and off the water. We keep old traditions alive by continuing to participate in traditional areas such as Bermuda Fitted Dinghy racing but we are also looking closely at the future of the club and have recently made huge investments in new boats and to the infrastructure of the club to put us on a great course for the future.”

A Trader Vic original, the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club is Vic’s tiki-fied version of the Daiquiri . Instead of one-dimensional simple syrup, Vic substituted orange curaçao and spiced falernum to intensify the tropical flavors and presumably translate the feeling of a Caribbean port-of-call.

from Punch (http://punchdrink.com)

Ingredients.

  • 2 ounces rum (preferably El Dorado 5 Year)
  • 1/2 ounce falernum
  • 1/4 ounce orange curacao (preferably Pierre Ferrand)
  • 3/4 ounce lime juice

Garnish: lime wheel

  • Add all ingredients to a mixing glass.
  • Add ice and shake until chilled.
  • Strain into a chilled coupe glass.
  • Garnish with a lime wheel.

How to make the Hemingway Daiquiri, a less sweet twist on a classic

If it was good enough for hemingway, it's good enough for us.

A daiquiri cocktail

A handful of classic cocktails taste like summer in a glass. These include the crisp, simple Gin & Tonic, thirst-quenching Margarita, and boozy, flavorful Mint Julep. But, if we could only pick one summery cocktail to drink early and often, it would be the Daiquiri .

One of our favorites is the iconic, refreshing Daiquiri. This simple cocktail has white rum, fresh lime juice, and simple syrup. It’s tart, thirst-quenching, and perfect on a hot, humid, sunny day. It’s as easy to make as it is to drink.

If you enjoy that classic cocktail, you’ll probably like some of its offshoots. And while we could spend an article writing about variations on the drink like Across The Pacific, Santa Marta, Royal Bermuda Yacht Club, and more, today it’s the Hemingway Daiquiri’s time to shine.

What is the Hemingway Daiquiri?

If you prefer less sweetness and more fresh citrus juice, this is the cocktail for you. This elevated take on the classic Daiquiri is made with white rum, maraschino liqueur, fresh lime juice, and fresh grapefruit juice. It removes the simple syrup from the original drink and adds maraschino liqueur and grapefruit juice.

The result is a sweet, tart, very refreshing version of the classic drink. You only need to change out a few ingredients to create a totally different flavor experience.

The Hemingway Daiquiri history

It should come as no surprise to you that this drink is named for famed literary icon Ernest Hemingway. A devoted fan of the Daiquiri, the writer of ‘A Farewell to Arms’ and other classic novels, supposedly took a trip to Havana, Cuba’s El Floridita bar in the 1930s. While there, he asked a bartender to make a Daiquiri without any sugar and with more booze. The bartender created this version of the drink and named it after the writer.

What you need to make a Hemingway Daiquiri

  • 2 ounces of white rum
  • .5 ounces of maraschino liqueur
  • .5 ounces of freshly squeezed grapefruit juice
  • .75 ounces of freshly squeezed lime juice

The Hemingway Daiquiri recipe steps

  • Add ice to a shaker.
  • Pour in the white rum, maraschino liqueur, fresh lime juice, and fresh grapefruit juice into the shaker.
  • Shake vigorously to combine.
  • Strain into a chilled coupe glass.
  • Garnish with a lime peel or lime wheel.

Bottom line

If this cocktail is good enough for a famous writer/rum drinker like Ernest Hemingway, it’s good enough for us. And while the author of ‘The Old Man and the Sea’ apparently ordered his with extra white rum and no simple syrup, the drink morphed into the rum, maraschino liqueur, lime juice, and grapefruit juice-based drink we know today. If you’re already a fan of the classic Daiquiri, why not try this amped-up, less-sweet version?

If you’re anything like us, you don’t just randomly pick a name on a cocktail menu and order the drink without taking at least a little peek at the ingredients to see if it contains flavors you’d enjoy. If you do this, you’ve probably run into a few mysterious ingredients along the way. While there are countless names on this list, one confusing ingredient that seems to pop up often is grenadine. Maybe you even know what this ingredient tastes like, but there’s a decent chance you don’t know what it is.

So, what exactly is grenadine? We know it’s a syrupy, red-colored liquid used for flavoring foods and by bartenders as an ingredient in many cocktails. But what else do we know? Is it cherry syrup? If not, what is it? What is its history? Keep reading to learn everything you ever wanted to know about this popular yet mysterious cocktail ingredient. What is grenadine?

If you're a spirits enthusiast looking to expand your horizons, these easy mezcal cocktails are a worthy choice. While other spirits like tequila and whiskey may have their own loyal following, mezcal offers a distinctive flavor profile and a rich cultural heritage.

This spirit has a rich history deeply rooted in Mexican traditions and craftsmanship. Mezcal production involves artisanal methods, often passed down through generations, making each bottle a testament to the dedication and expertise of the mezcaleros who make it.

Every summer, I tell myself that this year it's going to be different. This year, I am going to grow my own herbs, and I'm going to make it a success. You can probably guess where this is going, and it ends with me looking sadly at dried up pots of sage and coriander wilting pathetically on my balcony.

There is one herb that even I have managed to grow, though, and it's basil. Fresh, juicy, and pungent, basil smells divine and adds wonderful flavor to dishes from pasta to salads. But it needn't be limited to your meals -- basil can also be put to great use in your cocktails.

7 Moments in History That Shaped Yekaterinburg

The founders of the city of Yekaterinburg

A young city by Russian standards, Yekaterinburg grew from industrial beginnings into a modern city with a vibrant arts scene. On the cusp of both Europe and Asia, it was created for its closeness to one of Russia’s most prosperous mountain ranges. Its locality saw the city through World War II and took it into the tumultuous 90s, when the city became a hotbed for lawlessness as the Soviet Union transitioned into the Russia Federation. Discover the stories that defined the character of contemporary Yekaterinburg .

End of an Empire

The Russian Revolution brought an ending to Imperial Russia. In 1918, the Romanov family (Tsar Nicholas, his wife Alexandrea and their children Olga, Tatiana, Maria, Anastasia, and Alexei) were executed by the Bolsheviks. Their bodies were then disposed of in an unused mine, just on the outskirts of Yekaterinburg. The death of the family herald a new era for the country and thrust Russia into the communist state that was only dismantled in 1991. In the city centre, not far from the Iset River, the Church upon the Blood stands on the family’s execution site. Likewise, a short trip out of town, the Ganina Yama Monastery has been built next to the old mine that pays homage to Russia’s last royal family.

World War II

The city changed its’s name to Sverdlovsk, in honour of the Bolshevik who was one of Stalin’s trusted confidants. Over 700 factories and state technical institutions relocated to the area from Western Russia in efforts to maintain production during WWII. Many factories and institutions stayed when WWII ended, further strengthening the city’s industrial importance and paving the way for further industrial development. During the war the Hermitage Museum collections were in part relocated to the city in 1941 and remained there until 1945.

Mafia warfare.

The collapse of the Soviet Union spun Russia into uncertain times. The initiation of perestroika , the restructuring of Russia’s economic and political system, saw unemployment rise and made the nation vulnerable to corruption as people tried to take advantage of a changing economic structure. During the volatile and unstable times of the 1990s Yekaterinburg was home to mafia turf wars between feuding gangs in pursuit of their own agendas. Chiefly the Uralmash Gang and the Central gang, whose warring turned Yekaterinburg into a bloody battle ground. The mafia buried their clan in cemeteries on the outskirts of the city, complete with ostentatious and gaudy tombstones.
