This 218ft ketch is the biggest yacht Baltic have launched to date and in many ways she remains in a class of her own.

Despite her classic looks with a plumb stem and sweeping counter, she is a thoroughly modern high performance yacht taking full advantage of Baltic’s carbon composite building and engineering expertise.

Apart from her powerful sailplan, Hetairos sports not only a lifting keel, but also an unusual lifting rudder enabling her to fulfill her potential while sailing and access shallower anchorages and harbours when at rest.

She has proved to be a force to be reckoned with on the race course, but is just a capable as a world girdling cruising yacht capable of independent sailing for long periods of time.

Hetairos was one of the most challenging projects undertaken by Baltic Yachts and she remains one of the most outstanding sailing superyachts in the world.

Hetairos was delivered in 2011.

Built under the project name Panamax, superyacht Hetairos features unique appearance with an aggressive, near-plumb bow and a very long stern overhang, suggestive of the British pilot cutters that sailed the seas in the mid- to late- 1800s. Despite her epic proportions, she has been designed provide an impressive performance overall. The Yacht owner wanted to build a yacht with a classic look that was the largest and fastest possible yacht that would still be capable of crossing the Panama Canal.

Superyacht Awards : "Hetairos" is honoured

Dieter Loibner

 ·  10.05.2012

Superyacht Awards: "Hetairos" is honoured

"Hetairos", the 66-metre Panamax ketch designed by Reichel/Pugh Yacht Design and Dykstra & Partner and built by Baltic, not only wins regattas, but also awards. For example, the special honour from the jury at the World Superyacht Awards in Istanbul for the "remarkable contribution to the technical progress of sailing superyachts". What a bland title for such an exciting ship.

Familiar view: competitors see the stern of the "Hetairos"

Her size of almost 220 feet and the retro look make "Hetairos" an eye-catcher on the outside. The traditional deck superstructure, the long bowsprit and the classic stern shape, which are all somewhat reminiscent of a windjammer, are unique in this combination. But the rest of the yacht represents the state of the art. The latest construction methods for building from carbon fibre (she is said to be the largest yacht built from this material to date) and a consistently implemented philosophy based on the greatest possible weight saving give the ship the performance potential of a racing yacht.

Beauty dissected: There is no lack of comfort on "Hetairos"

The development work at Reichel/Pugh began in 2003 and was in no way inferior to that of an America's Cup racer. They built a model on a scale of 1:7.5 to check the flow data in the tank tests, which were calculated by Frank DeBord using FloSim and Splash (Computational Fluid Dynamics). "We tested 17 different configurations until we arrived at the one that was actually built," explained designer Jim Pugh. And these measures paid off, as "Hetairos" impressively demonstrated with her victories in terms of time sailed at the Transatlantic Superyacht Regatta and the RORC Caribbean 600.

Hetairos wins on the water and also at the Superyacht Awards

Length works and lightness even more so. But what "Hetairos" also showed was stability. A collision with a submerged rock - a real danger with a draught of 9 metres - during the St. Barth regatta was relatively minor because the crash box installed at the front of the keel bomb was able to absorb the forces released on impact. Project manager Jens Cornelsen stated that "the rest of the keel, as well as the keel suspension that extends through the entire hull, did not suffer any significant damage". A shipyard that can crane a ship of this size first had to be found for the repair...

Slim tip: very impressive even without sails

So big ships have their own problems. But "Hetairos" could have been even bigger. But the owner wanted a yacht with which he could pass through the Panama Canal, which is why the rig was limited by the maximum clearance height of the canal bridge. The main mast is therefore "only" 62.5 metres high. Hence the term "Panamax ketch", which is sometimes used for "Hetairos".

“They told me that suddenly they found themselves catapulted into the water without even understanding how they had got there,” he said, “And that the whole thing seems to have lasted from 3 to 5 minutes.”

Giovanni Costantino, CEO of The Italian Sea Group, which owns Perini Navi, the Bayesian's shipbuilder, told Sky News that there were no flaws with the design or construction of the yacht. He said their structure and keel made boats like that “unsinkable bodies.”

In an interview with the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, he disavowed responsibility, blaming instead the actions of the crew. “Mistakes were made,” he said.

Genco said one of his colleagues who arrived at the scene before him initially thought that only three people survived, but the coast guard reported there were other survivors and more emergency services were called in.

When Genco arrived, he found scenes of panic and despair.

“Unfortunately, we are used to such panic scenes because we are used to the shipwrecks that happen on Lampedusa ,” Genco said, referring to the island southwest of Sicily, where the wreckage of boats carrying migrants on the sea journey from North Africa to Italy are often found .

Six of the passengers were declared missing Monday, and by Thursday, the bodies of five had been recovered from the wreck , some 160 feet underwater.

Among those who survived is Angela Bacares, wife of the British tech mogul Mike Lynch , whose body was recovered Thursday.

Divers searching for six missing people following the sinking of a superyacht off Sicily in a storm have found fifth bodies.

Another survivor has been identified as Charlotte Emsley, 35. She told the Italian news agency ANSA that she had momentarily lost hold of her year-old daughter, Sofia, in the water but managed to retrieve her and hold her over the waves until a lifeboat inflated and they were pulled into safety.

Dr. Domenico Cipolla at the Di Cristina Children’s Hospital in Palermo is also part of a team of medical professionals treating the shipwreck survivors. He told the BBC on Wednesday that Emsley and her daughter, as well as the father of the child, who Cipolla said also survived, are continuing to receive psychological help.

“Psychological support was constant and is constant even today, because basically it is the wounds of the soul that are the most in need of healing in these cases,” Cipolla said.

Genco also told NBC News that he was especially concerned about the child. “She did not understand anything. She was soaking wet and cold,” he said.

Karsten Borner, the Dutch captain of the Sir Robert Baden Powell, a yacht that was anchored near the Bayesian, said by phone Wednesday that he saw a thunderstorm come in at around 4 a.m. local time (10 p.m. ET) Monday, followed by what looked like a waterspout, a type of tornado that forms over water.

The International Centre for Waterspout Research noted on X that there was a “waterspout outbreak” off Italy on Monday, the day the Bayesian sank.

All the men missing after a luxury yacht sank off Sicily -- who included UK tech tycoon Mike Lynch -- have been found, a coastguard official told.

“I turned on the engine and made maneuvers so that we wouldn’t collide with the Bayesian, which was anchored about 100 meters from us,” Borner said. “Then all of a sudden it disappeared. Then the wind calmed down, we looked around and saw a red flare.”

Borner said he got into his boat’s tender and saw a life raft with 15 people on it. Members of the crew were administering first aid.

“I don’t know why it sank so quickly, but it may have something to do with the mast which was incredibly long,” he said. Questions have been raised about whether the mast was to blame for the accident as tall masts, even with the sails down, have more surface area exposed to the wind, which can contribute to tipping a vessel in a storm.

The CCTV footage that emerged Tuesday showed the yacht’s 250-foot mast, believed to be one of the tallest aluminum sailing masts in the world, lashed by the storm as it appears to tilt to one side before disappearing.

Learn more about the map styles

Each map type offers different information and each map style is designed for a different purpose. Read about the styles and map projection used in the above map (Physical Map of Novosibirsk).

Physical map

Physical map illustrates the mountains, lowlands, oceans, lakes and rivers and other physical landscape features of Novosibirsk. Differences in land elevations relative to the sea level are represented by color.

Green color represents lower elevations, orange or brown indicate higher elevations, shades of grey are used for the highest mountain ranges in the world. Underwater topography is represented by blues. Darker blues are used for the deepest water, lighter shades of blue represent shallower water such as the continental shelf.

Geographic map projection

A map projection is a way how to transform points on a Earth to points on a map. This map of Novosibirsk uses Plate Carree projection. The Plate Carree projection is a simple cylindrical projection originated in the ancient times. It has straight and equally spaced meridians and parallels that meet at right angles.

All projections from a sphere to a plane are distorted. The drawback of the Plate Carree projection is that it doesn't make an attempt to compensate for these distortions. For the general view of Novosibirsk, this is not a significant problem. The detailed maps use the Mercator projection which preserves the shape of small areas better.

Superyacht Hetairos' unique propulsion system

For motor yachts, there are numerous methods of propulsion which all have their place, depending on the requirements for a given project. Whether it's conventional shafts and propellers for a reliable and cost-effective installation, pod drives for larger yachts offering increased manoeuvrability, or waterjets and surface piercers for speed, the choice for owners is considerable. For sailing yachts, though, the choice is rather more limited and it is usually confined to conventional shafts or to saildrive legs, powered by conventional diesels through Z- or L-drive gearboxes.

Moreover, for performance yachts, there is an added complication the need to keep the underwater area as clear as possible from appendages which might induce hydrodynamic drag and knock vital tenths off potential sailing speeds.

Nearly all modern yachts rely on additional units

Alongside main propulsion, nearly all modern yachts rely on additional units to provide manoeuvrability in the form of bow and stern thrusters. Yachts fitted with powerful sternthrusters often cite those units as emergency propulsion options, claiming that get home speeds of 4-5 knots can be maintained if the main propulsion system fails.

For one cutting edge project, though, thrusters provided more than a means to manoeuvre. Enter Hetairos , the striking 66.7m, 2011-launched carbon ketch designed by Dykstra Naval Architects and built at Baltic Yachts.

With maximum speed under sail being one of the key design parameters, underwater appendages that might induce unwanted drag became a focus of attention. After several options were looked at, it was decided to opt for a retractable drive system, which would enable the yacht to retain a clean, flush underwater shape when the drives were not being used.

Power for the yacht, including the hydraulic thruster system, comes from four VW Marine diesels, and by the time thruster specialist Ocean Yacht Systems was brought in to the project, in January 2009, the dimensions for the thruster mechanisms had already been set.

'The biggest challenges,' says Ian Crowden, director of OYS Thrusters, 'were getting a fully operational, high-quality machine in a predefined area, and meeting the target weight set out in the project. We came up with a mechanical hydraulic drive to do the job, then we looked at changing out some of the primary components to titanium, including the main drive legs.

'Such a mechanism had not been designed before, and involved around 18 months of research and development. Some of the major rotational parts are cast billet titanium, with the drive legs centrifugally cast. The main rotation bearings are composite.

'We worked with the Marin Institute, which tank-tested a model of the drive legs to get performance data, and from there we fine-tuned the design. They were designed to be able to be deployed and retracted while the yacht was travelling at 15 knots, and a key requirement was a high bollard pull of 10 tonnes, which we exceeded. The four-blade props are 934mm in diameter, and are housed in carbon nozzles to maximise thrust.'

The result is a highly custom drive system that enables the yacht to reach high speeds under power, while minimising drag under sail. It is unlikely that such thruster-based drive systems will ever become mainstream, and for the majority of projects out there more conventional means of propulsion will meet all the requirements of a given design. But for those few extreme sailing yacht projects, where the striving for ultimate performance means finding the ultimate custom solutions, Hetairos has shown that using retractable thrusters linked to a diesel-electric installation is now a viable alternative.

A traveler's guide to Novosibirsk, the unofficial capital of Siberia

hetairos sailing yacht owner

Trans-Siberian heritage

Residents of Novosibirsk love trains and are proud of the fact that their city played a significant role in the history of the grand Trans-Siberian railway, which spans the breadth of Russia. The railway is such a part of Novosibirsk identity that it is even depicted on the city’s emblem, along with the bridge that crosses the Ob river and two Siberian sables standing on their hind legs.

In the city, there are as many as five monuments to trains, and an open-air locomotive museum is located in the vicinity of the train station Seyatel’. The museum has more than 100 steam locomotives, diesel locomotives and carriages, reflecting the history of rail transportation in Russia from pre-revolutionary times to the present day. Wondering around the stationary trains and comparing your height with the diameter of the gigantic iron wheels of the first steam locomotives is all very well, but why not climb inside the carriages and see how the nobility once traveled across Russia in pre-revolutionary times? These tours will however need to be booked in advance. The museum opens from 11:00 until 17:00 every day except Mondays.

Novosibirsk spans both sides of the river Ob. In the early twentieth century, the border of two different timezones passed right through the city which led to a strange situation- morning on the east bank started one hour earlier than on the west bank! The two-kilometer covered metro bridge that crosses the river is considered the longest in the world. Due to the fluctuations in temperature across the year (on average +30 °C to -30 °C), during the summer the metro bridge expands, and in the winter it contracts by half a meter. The repertoire of the theatre can be viewed on its official website . The theatre season runs from September to July, and comprises mainly classical performances, like the ballet “The Nutcracker” by Tchaikovsky, Borodin’s opera “Prince Igor” and Verdi’s “La Traviata”.

The large Siberian sea and ligers

Weekends are best spent at the Novosibirsk zoo . The zoo is known for breeding big cats, although surrounded by controversy, hosts a successful crossing of a tiger and lion, which of course would not otherwise breed in wildlife. Ligers, or exotic cubs of an African lion and Bengal tigress, feel quite comfortable in the Siberian climate and even produce offspring. The zoo is open to visitors year-round, seven days a week, and even has its own free mobile app, Zoo Nsk .

Every year at the beginning of January, the festival of snow culture takes place bringing together artists from across Russia and around the world to participate in a snow sculpting competition. The tradition started in 2000 inspired by the snow festival in Sapporo, Novosibirsk’s twin-city.

Siberian Silicon Valley

Despite the fact that Akademgorodok was built half a century ago in the middle of the uninhabited Siberian taiga, architecturally it was ahead of its time. No trees were destroyed for its construction, and houses were built right in the middle of the forest. A man walking through the woods would seemingly stumble upon these structures. At that time, no one had built anything similar in the world and ecovillages only became fashionable much later.

For residents of the Novosibirsk Akademgorodok is a different world. When you step out the bus or car, you are immediately on one of the hiking paths through the forest, between the scientific buildings and clubs. On a walk through Akademgorodok, it is possible to unexpectedly encounter art-like objects handmade by residents of the city which have been erected as monuments and some monuments fixed up by city authorities. For example, the monument to the laboratory mice, which knits a strand of DNA on to some needles, can be found in the square alongside the Institute of Cytology and Genetics. In Akademgorodok there are many cafes and restaurants, in which it is possible to rest after a long walk. Grab a coffee and go to eat at Traveler’s Coffee , or eat lunch at the grille and bar People’s or Clover .

Winters in the Akademgorodok are slightly colder than in the city, so wrap up. Spring and summer are usually wetter, so waterproof boots are recommended. In the summer the Ob sea provides respite from the heat, so do not forget your swimsuit to go for a dip.

Memento Mori

Among the exhibits of the museum is one dedicated to world funeral culture — hearses, memorial jewellery from the hair of the deceased, samples from a specific photo-genre of  "post mortem", a collection of funeral wear from the Victorian era, deathmasks, statues and monuments. There’s also an impressive collection of coffins. One of them, resembling a fish, was manufactured on a special visit to Novosibirsk by a designer coffin-maker from Africa, Eric Adjetey Anang, who specializes in the production of unusual coffins.

Surprisingly, the crematorium itself does not look at all gloomy in appearance and definitely does not look like infernal scenes from movies, or like crematoriums of other cities that gravitate towards gloomy temple aesthetics. The Novosibirsk crematorium is decorated in “cheerful” orange tones and is surrounded by a park with a children’s playground nearby. A visit to the museum then leaves you with mixed feelings.

Novosibirsk underground

Tourists from all over the world go down into the Moscow metro to take a ride and a few selfies in the most famous underground museum. The Novosibirsk metro is also quite a museum in itself — it has 13 stations, the most beautiful of which is Gagarinskaya, Sibirskaya and Rechnoy Vokzal.

The ultramodern Gagarinskaya station is like a real cosmos underground. Its technologically themed design includes marble walls with metallic elements, dark blue backlighting and portraits of Yuri Gagarin. The Sibirskaya station looks like an underground treasure trove, decorated by Altai masters craftsmen with mosaics of precious Siberian stones. The Rechnoy Vokzal station is framed with ten glowing stained glass windows depicting the largest cities of Siberia, including Novosibirsk itself, Omsk, Barnaul and others. The platform resembles a big ship sailing on the Ob, from which ancient Siberian cities are visible through its windows.

How to get there

The easiest way to get to Novosibirsk is by plane with Aeroflot or Novosibirsk airline S7 with one-way tickets from Moscow costing from 200-250 USD. If you decide to take from the train from Moscow, you’ll have to travel approximately a third of the Trans-Siberian Railway. That’s 3,300 kilometers over almost a three-day journey.

Where to stay

There are many great hotels in Novosibirsk. Amongst the best include a four-star Doubletree hotel by Hilton , which is located near Lenin Square (per room from $200). After renovations and repairs, the congress-hotel Novosibirsk has improved (per room from $100) and is located across from the train station. Less expensive but of a similar standard is the four-star River Park hotel near Rechnoy Vokzal metro station, which costs $80 per night.
