Aussie John Symond lists superyacht Hasna for $160 million, eyeing a bigger future boat

Aussie Home Loans founder John Symonds is selling Hansa, his super megayacht, with hopes to build a new one in the future.

He's asking around $160 million, which would be $60 million more than Australia's most expensive home, for the 73 metre vessel which was only delivered in 2017.

It has been reported on The Australian's Margin Call that there is heat in the market at the moment.

Symond's son Stephen has been recently using the boat, sailing from New York City out to The Hamptons.

Hansa won award at last years World Superyacht Awards for her exterior lines, large jacuzzi and high-quality finish.

It was built by Dutch shipyard Royal van Lent.

The boat was a big reason as to why Aussie John was listening to offers for his Point Piper mega mansion, given plans he and wife Amber McDonald had to travel Europe on the water.

The listing, referred to as a 'her' in its marketing, is one of the most expensive this year.

It features its own beach club, an eight metre infinity swimming pool, its own gym, hair salon, lift and 10 seat cinema on the main deck.

There's a lower deck wellness centre with a massage room.

An elevator serves the lower, main and bridge decks. 

There are six cabins that sleep 12, with a catering crew of 21.

The owners suite, on the main deck, has his and hers bathrooms, separate dressing rooms, a lounge and a private study.

Its twin MTU diesel engine gives it a top speed of 16.6 knots, around 30 kilometres an hour.

The boat isn't the most expensive however on the market.

That gong goes to Secret, a 2013 built, 82.5 metre yacht built by German boat builders  by  Abeking &   Rasmussen. It is currently on the market for nearly $200 million.

The opulence almost overtakes Symonds.

The interiors are designed by Jim Harris, with the exterior by the acclaimed yacht designer Sam Sorgiovanni.

The boat is owned by American businesswoman Nancy Walton Laurie an American heir to the Walmart fortune.

Walton Laurie has an estimated fortune of US$6.6 billion (AU$9.7 billion).

Harris was also responsible for the interior of Walton’s previous  Feadship  yacht.

Is is believed Walton bought the superyacht Jubilee.

Walton's sister Ann Kroenke, fellow heir to the Walmart fortune, owns the yacht Aquila.

None of the above mentioned boats come close to being the most expensive yacht ever, which is in the billions.

The History Supreme is worth $4.8 billion, given it is made from solid gold.

Some 10,000 kilograms of solid gold was used by renowned luxury yacht designer Stuart Hughes from the UK. The build of the fairly modest 30 metre yacht took three years.

It reportedly belongs to Malaysia's richest man Robert Knok.

The master bedroom has wall feature made from meteorite rock and a statue made from genuine Tyrannosaurus Rex bones.

It also features a 68 kg 24-carat gold Aquavista Panoramic Wall Aquarium and a liquor bottle featuring a rare 18.5 carat diamond. 

Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, owner of English Premier League football club Chelsea, owns the $1.5 billion Eclipse, the second most expensive boat in the world.

He's regularly on the gigantic 170 metre yacht built by Blohm and Voss of Germany and designed by Terence Disdale. 

It has a mini submarine capable of submerging up to 50 metres underwater.

Abramovich is rarely photographed on the boat, namely due to the fact there's an anti-paparazzi shield which consists of lasers sweeping the surrounding areas.

Australian billionaire Brett Blundy recently offloaded his 74 metre Italian superyacht Cloud 9, according to Margin Call.

‘Aussie’ John Symond Selling His Yacht HASNA For $160m

Australian rich lister John Symond, best known for his iconic ‘at Aussie, we’ll save you’ TV ad, has listed his spectacular superyacht HASNA for sale through Burgess Yachts at a bargain basement price of €97,500,000 (AUD~$160,000,000).

The 73m (239.5ft) vessel was delivered by Dutch shipyard Royal van Lent in 2017 and has since been the jewel in the Symond family crown, featuring extensively on John’s daughter Debra’s Instagram .

While there’s no word on why ‘Aussie’ John is selling HASNA, he might’ve bitten off just a bit more than he can chew, with the industry rule of thumb being that you should never spend more than 10% of your net worth on a yacht. Symond has an estimated net worth of $600m according to the AFR Rich List , meaning HASNA accounts for more than a quarter of his net worth. Whatever the case, we’re just pleased we can finally check out the inside of this stunning yacht, with the images below some of the first publicly available interior shots released.

It’s a stunning, 73m-long floating “work of art” with an infinity pool and a private cinema, but Aussie millionaire John Symonds’ prize superyacht Hasna is not impressing New Yorkers.

Mr Symonds is selling the award-winning, custom-built vessel he bought a little over two years ago and figured the city’s iconic skyline would be a perfect backdrop to showcase her considerable assets.

Since she went on the market last month, Hasna has been bobbing conspicuously around on the water and not everyone is happy about it.

Locals claim the vessel has been parked right in front of the Statue of Liberty — ruining views of the iconic landmark for tourists and residents alike.

“It’s incredibly tacky and tasteless,’’ Oreste Marrero, 48, told The New York Post .

The Department of Homeless Services worker said he had wandered down to lower Manhattan on his lunch break to enjoy what should have been an unobstructed view of the statue.

Instead, Mr Marrero found Lady Liberty partially obscured by Mr Symonds’s floating mansion.

“Just because you have a lot of money, you get to do that? The Statue of Liberty is a landmark. You can’t dock your yacht in front of it,’’ Mr Marrero told The Post .

Another woman told the paper the superyacht’s position screamed wealth and entitlement.

“We get it, you’re rich,” she said. “Maybe the yacht isn’t selling, so he figured why not park by a national monument to garner interest?”

The businessman’s long-time spokesman, Tim Allerton, said Mr Symonds was aware of the complaints but suggested they were an over-reaction to what was a common sight.

“Look, I’ve seen that picture (of the Hasna docked in front of the statue) and it’s hardly even blocking the statue, I mean it would be really pushing it to say it ruins the view,” he told news.com.au.

“There are a lot of big boats in front of the Statue of Liberty.”

Staten Island Ferry worker Julio Montes said their was nothing wrong with Mr Symonds flaunting his wealth.

“People always dock their yachts in front of the statue — normally, they take a tender boat to the World Trade Center and go back and forth,’’ he told The Post . “More power to the guy.”

Mr Allerton said Mr Symonds, who is currently aboard the yacht with his wife Amber, had moved the vessel — not because of the complaints but because anchorage regulations prevent boats from docking in the same spot for more than 72 hours.

“John and Amber have been sailing up and down the coast with the whole family, from the Hudson to the Hamptons, having a wonderful time,” he said.

“There’s been a lot of interest in the boat, by the way, a lot of interest.”

Mr Symonds is asking $160 million for the Hasna, which sleeps 12 guests in six luxurious cabins and has a crew of 21. An elevator serves the lower, main and bridge decks.

The boat has its own beach club, an eight metre infinity pool, a gym, hair salon, wellness centre and a 10-seat cinema.

The owners’ suite, on the main deck, has his-and-hers bathrooms, separate dressing rooms, a lounge and a private study, according to Property Observer .

Mr Symonds is one of Australia’s most successful property industry moguls, with a net worth of more than $600 million, made from selling non-bank home loans.

The 72-year-old is married to Amber McDonald, the 47-year-old former wife of Patrick Keating, son of former prime minister Paul Keating.

The couple have also been trying to sell their waterfront home at Sydney’s exclusive Point Piper. In 2017, they were forced to withdraw the property from the market after the $100 million price tag failed to attract a buyer.

After spending $75million on a super yacht which took four years to build, an Australian tycoon has put the luxury vessel up for sale two years after its completion. 

Aussie Home Loans founder John Symond, with an estimated net worth of $580million, has employed the services of Burgess Yachts to sell his 73 metre vessel, Hasna. 

The listing was posted on Sunday after the yacht was completed in 2017.

With a $160million price tag, the Hasna is one of the most expensive super yacht listings so far in 2019. 

The super yacht was first launched in Holland in 2017, just in time for Mr Symond's 70th birthday and was built to his specifications. 

Mr Symonds would also go on to spend a staggering $7 million for his three-day birthday celebrations.

It remains unclear what prompted the multi-millionaire to put the luxury yacht on the market.

According to Dutch designer and Feadship director Jan Bart Berkuyl, the yacht was designed in a 'beach chic' style. 

He told The Daily Telegraph in 2017 Mr Symond was very hands on when it came to the construction and design of Hasna. 

'They were very involved in the build and the owner also flew his friends halfway around the world to share the fun of the construction process with them on several occasions,' he said.   

The massive 73 metre yacht dwarfed Mr Symond's previous super yacht, the 45m yacht Sunseeker. 

Mr Symond sold his final 20 per cent stake in the company he founded, worth an estimated $100million, only months after his super yacht was launched in 2017. 

He has since bought up a residence in the upmarket Mayfair in London and will split his retirement between the United Kingdom and Australia.

Building a legacy: Inside John Symond’s $200 million masterpiece

At the sharp end of Sydney’s ultra-posh Point Piper sits ‘ Wingadal ,’ the 2,676-square-metre home built by Aussie Home Loans founder John Symond. It’s up for sale and is likely to smash Australian real estate records. Alec Tzannes, the celebrated architect who designed the building likely to sell for more than $200 million, tells Stewart Hawkins about the passion, pride, and painstaking work that went into its creation.

Architect Alec Tzannes recalls being told, “You should take particular care to design something beautiful because there’s a greater chance it won’t be demolished.” A cynical view, perhaps, but one that was articulated to him by Professor Deo Prasad, an international authority and leader in sustainable architecture.

This design philosophy plays into the first rule of sustainability, which is longevity. If the dwelling persists, you don’t lose the embodied carbon that went into the build in the first place. This may seem a particular consideration for something as substantial as John Symond’s Wingadal mansion, but when you’re talking buyers who have the means to drop $200 million on a trophy home, there’s no guarantee they won’t want to substantially change the property.

Tzannes hopes the new owners won’t, and it’s obvious when you speak with him that he poured not only his intellect, skill, and craft into the build, but also his passion, describing the iconic piece of real estate as both “extraordinary” and “challenging.”

“It’s a milestone in my career,” Tzannes says. “It’s a one-off, and it reflects my design values, but it’s not my house; it’s John’s house. It really reflects his views about how he wanted to live, and his idea of beauty. I was a vehicle for that.”

“John intuitively, implicitly, was building a legacy building,” he says. “It wasn’t just for him.”

Adding to the complication of the design was that the property was on a unique piece of Sydney land. The peninsular juts out into the water, with not only the harbour views and its passing parade of sails, but also the Opera House and Harbour Bridge.

Tzannes wanted to create a home that could be “nowhere else”—a design particularised to its situation.

Given the home’s size and scope, the journey to completion was understandably complex. The project initially involved two design competitions because the brief changed. Tzannes was selected as the preferred architect for the first one, but it was decided not to go ahead. A second design competition was held, and Tzannes was selected again.

And here’s where the challenges started. Firstly, Tzannes’ “grand design” was pushing the boundaries of the carefully conservative Woollahra Council.

“I said to John, before I spend any of your money, I’d like you to go to [the local] Council to determine whether or not the degree of non-compliance that is implicit in the brief was approvable by the land and environment court as I think in all probability [it was] not,” Tzannes remembers.

“As it turned out, the advice we received was that it was almost certainly not approvable by Municipal Council, but that if the building addressed its environmental impacts appropriately, there was a reasonable prospect of it being approved by the court,” he says.

Tzannes’ design ultimately was approved partly because he was able to show the building, when viewed from all the public domains, was acceptable in terms of its environmental impacts, as well as from adjoining private properties, despite the fact it exceeded the existing floor space ratio by approximately double and broke the existing height rules.

Tzannes says the most extraordinary part of the brief was the 250-person sit-down, 500-person stand-up function area. He positioned that so it had an arch form that framed the Bridge.

“I gave him options about what level you could take this design [to], and he took it to the top level. It has an acoustically transparent ceiling—all the lighting is designed [to] light the tables and the faces; they don’t shadow the food.”

There’s also a small theatre typically for musical events, but there’s also a cinema and a back-of-house commercial kitchen.

It’s the stonework that reflects the natural cliff face in the project that Tzannes said was one of the key “winning points for council,” and also because the outline of the house follows the natural shoreline.

“If you look at it, I used a technique that’s often used in historic courts, which is that from the outside, it looks fairly massive. The openings look small, but from the inside, the stone dematerialises because it is shaped [and angled] in such a way that it optimizes [the outlook]. [From inside] you tend not to see the stone—your eye connects all the view.”

The design also allows the shimmering light from the harbour to reflect into the interior, but the result from the outside, he says, is to amplify the visual effect that the house’s stone base is more connected to the natural stone escarpment.

On the lower level, there’s a swimming pool and a 22-person spa. Tzannes said he designed the house around 22 people that might “come to have drinks or go and have dinner, sit in the lounge, or go to the cinema, or go for a swim.”

Why 22 people? “That was John’s number,” he says.

In Tzannes’ view, despite its grandeur, the property is more like a traditional house. It has the functionality of an older period house where you distinguish between a set of high-end formal facilities and the more informal living areas. For instance, there’s a formal dining room where cutlery designed by Georg Jensen in the early 1900s is used, and then in the informal areas, there’s a kitchen where you can sit next to it—like a family room.

The entrance to the house comes off the street and then falls away—essentially, the edifice backs onto the cliff face—which minimises its visual footprint from the street but presented a challenge in terms of natural light.

“This is a very important design point,” he says. “The house does not feel like it’s wedged up against a cliff. It feels as though it’s free-standing from every room, including the main bathrooms.

“All these types of designs where it’s more than a transactional brief have a degree of emotional engagement and none more [so] than a house that…the intent is to live in forever. John was heavily invested in the process and mindful of value.”

In Tzannes’ opinion, the property has appreciated in value because it was “done properly” in the first place.

“It’s aged better,” he says. “The sandstone has become a honey colour, the feeling of the timbers—they’ve all matured. It feels like its beauty has been enhanced by the natural aging process.”

“[John initially] wanted a neoclassical art deco house,” Tzannes says. “I said it’s a problem, John, because you also want a magnificent view—all those houses from the turn of [19th] century tended to have vertical proportion windows…we need to make [the house] of today.

“There’s no point in taking any building in time and copying it because it’ll never be as good. [A building should] come out of its own socioeconomic circumstances.

“We’ve got to make this a real way of reflecting your time on this planet using knowledge and our artisans and trades to the best possible standards. Then you create a unique object that will transcend time. It becomes a valuable artifact that you still want to enjoy a hundred years later because it’s authentic to its time and place.”

PROPERTY tycoon John Symond is about to bring home his new toy — a super yacht to rival James Packer’s Arctic P.

The Aussie Home Loans megamillionaire is the proud owner of the 73m-long Hasna, believed to be worth more than $100 million dollars.

The boat is being built in the Netherlands and is currently undergoing water trials before Symond takes delivery in September.

The on-board style is described by its Dutch builder Feadship as “beach chic” and includes an eight-metre swimming pool with waterfall, a midship beach club, a three-metre jacuzzi, gym and cinema.

It is believed the boat can hold 12 guests split across six cabins, while the large crew area allows for a staff of up to 21 people.

Hasna is Arabic for “beautiful one”, with a source telling Confidential the luxury vessel is like “buying the best Rolls-Royce but on the water”.

Feadship director Jan Bart Berkuyl said Symonds was the first owner ever to speak to workforce at the start of the build, sharing his life story and why Hasna would be so important to him and his family.

“They were very involved in the build and the owner also flew his friends halfway around the world to share the fun of the construction process with them on several occasions,” he said.

Symond’s new toy dwarfs his previous craft, the 45m yacht Sunseeker, and while slightly smaller than Arctic P, is considered more luxurious, although Packer is also waiting to take delivery of a new yacht.

The purchase puts the Aussie mortgage king on par with US tech moguls and Middle Eastern oil tycoons when it comes to the luxury yacht ownership stakes. However he still trails Russian billionaire and Chelsea FC boss Roman Abramovich, whose $1.5 billion boat Eclipse is the world’s most expensive yacht.

The boat is a 70th birthday present for Symond whose net worth was last valued at $580 million. He will celebrate the milestone birthday with 200 of his nearest and dearest in Monaco in August.

Aussie John Symond has sold his 73-metre super yacht, Hasna

‘Aussie’ John Symond knocked back an offer of $100m on his Point Piper mansion a few years ago, but he has reportedly offloaded his $150m superyacht.

Symond put the 73 metre luxury motor yacht ‘Hasna’ up for sale a year ago with an asking price of $160m, with the intention of upgrading to something even bigger.

Now, despite COVID-19, it’s sold, according to yachtie news website yachtharbour.com. But not before a $10m price drop.

Among its highlights are an eight metre infinity pool, a jacuzzi, a 10-seat cinema, a wellness centre and massage room, a lift, an inside-outside bar, sun deck lounge and even a hairdressing salon.

Among its features, the superyacht has an eight-metre infinity pool, a jacuzzi…..even a hairdressing salon.

The man who made his fortune from mortgages as the founder of Aussie Home Loans bought the boat for more than $104m two years earlier, soon after he withdrew his Wingadal Pl waterfront trophy home from the market.

The plan had been for Symond and wife Amber to tour Europe on ‘Hansa’, which is one of the best private superyachts in the world.

The identity of the purchaser isn’t it known, or whether it took a further discount to sell it.

At $150m, that’s $50m more than the Australian house price record, which was achieved, when, unlike Symond’s, did actually sell for $100m.

That was for another Point Piper waterfront, when tech billionaire Mike Cannon-Brookes bought the Fairfax waterfront estate ‘Fairwater’.

‘Hasna’ has been renamed ‘Lunasea’ by its new owner since the sale in recent weeks.

It has accommodation for 12 guests and a crew of up to 21.

Yachtharbour.com reported that the sale occurred via leading superyacht companies y.co and Burgess.

Y.co chairman Gary Wright said demand for well-built yachts was strong but added: “Completing a sale of this magnitude in the current climate has taken an extraordinary amount of commitment from everyone involved.”

Tolyatti: A Russian Homage To Italy

This is the curious story of a Russian city named after an Italian politician, Palmiro Togliatti.

This is the curious story of a russian city named after an italian politician, palmiro togliatti.

There are cities which were made great by men, and men which have been made great by a city. This is the case of Palmiro Togliatti — a founding member and the longest serving secretary of the Italian Communist Party — and a Russian city located in Samara Oblast, known as Stavropol on Volga until 1964, which was then renamed Tolyatti, becoming the greatest tribute in the world to an Italian politician. The city of Tolyatti was named after him immediately after his death in Yalta — a seaside town in the then Soviet Union — on August 21st, 1964, as a result of a sudden stroke and cerebral bleed. He was on vacation, on his way to give his support for Brezhnev as Khrushchev’s successor.

Who was Palmiro Togliatti?

If you happen to travel around Italy, you may have noticed that in every Italian city — however big or small — there is a street named after Palmiro Togliatti. That’s because Togliatti was not just the charismatic secretary and one of the founders of the Italian Communist Party, but a legendary figure of Italian and international politics. He started his political career before World War I, joining the Italian Socialist Party in 1914, then serving as a volunteer, and returning home to Turin after being injured. During this period he learned about the Russian Revolution and became fascinated, wanting to bring soviet ideas to Italy. He became a founder of the Communist Party of Italy, which was a part of Communists International (Comintern). In fact, after the end of Fascism — during which he spent almost 17 years in Moscow, becoming one of the highest representatives of the Comintern with the blessing of Stalin — he came back to Italy as Deputy Prime Minister until 1945 and taking part in the Constituent Assembly until 1948, writing the current constitution of the Italian Republic. Under his political and intellectual leadership — enough to be nicknamed ‘The Best ’ — the Italian Communist Party would become the largest non-ruling party in Europe and the second in Italy, after the Christian Democracy, which was consistently the most popular Italian party until 1992, when the Cold War ended and the danger of a ‘ Soviet ’ turning point in Italy was warded off.

Nevertheless, the Communist Party ruled by Togliatti had a big influence in Italian society, especially regarding culture, and achieved great results in local elections within particular regions of Italy. Togliatti chose to become a Soviet Union citizen in 1930, in fact giving up Italian citizenship. What may have seemed like complete devotion to the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and its General Secretary Joseph Stalin, clashes with his next choice of refusing the head of the Communist Information Bureau proposed by Stalin himself in 1951, preferring to remain General Secretary of the Italian Communist Party. Throughout his career he supported his communist beliefs but fought to bring them to his beloved home country of Italy. Palmiro Togliatti wanted to fulfill his dream of a communist plan through democracy: the original ‘ Italian way to Socialism’.

Tolyatti, the Russian city

The Russian homage to Palmiro Togliatti was not chosen at random. In fact, a significant city was named after him: Stavropol on Volga became Tolyatti ( Togliatti Russianized) because right there — on the banks of Volga river — the Italian politician had a key role in building the popular AvtoVAZ factory, the manufacturer of the Lada car brand. And thus, in the 1960s, through cooperation with FIAT , the city took a new shape and a new name, because the old Stavropol on Volga was also covered by the Kuybyshev Hydroelectric Station. This infrastruscture was crucial for the development of a large industry. Therefore Tolyatti — just like what happened in Italy with Turin — became the working-class city par excellence, and the Communist Party of the Soviet Union made it a great vehicle for propaganda and experimentation. Many facilities were built, especially for sports, and new parks and monuments emerged in Tolyatti, which were made to represent the perfect Soviet city for the perfect Soviet citizen.

Not surprisingly, many popular athletes grew up in Tolyatti, such as the Olympic champion Alexei Nemov and the former ice hockey players Alexei Kovalev, Ilya Bryzgalov, Viktor Kozlov and Alexei Emelin. As you might imagine, ice hockey is very popular around there, and the local club sponsored by Lada is one of the best across Russia. Tolyatti, due to its vast spaces, has several monuments of national interest : Victory Park, a memorial dedicated to the Soviet victory in World War II built in the Auto Factory district; Liberty Square with its Obelisk of Glory dedicated to the fighters of World War II; the Mourning Angel standing in Central Park, a memorial to victims of political repression built after the end of the Communist era. Also the Transfiguration Cathedral, with its wonderful golden domes, was built after the fall of the Berlin Wall. Tolyatti was also the city where the great Russian painter Ilya Repin stayed for a brief period in 1870, painting his masterpiece ‘ Barge Haulers on the Volga’. The house where he stayed then became a monument.

Last but not least, among the most meaningful monuments of Tolyatti is ‘ Loyalty’. It is a bronze statue dedicated to a faithful dog, called ‘ Kostya’, who survived a car accident in which its owners lost their lives. Like what happened in Japan with Hachiko, Kostya wouldn’t give up, waiting for its owners for seven consecutive years at the same spot. Under the snow and the rain, winter and summer, the dog stayed there, running up to all the passing cars and hoping one day to again see its beloved masters. Only his own death let him abandon his spot, but Tolyatti citizens unanimously wanted to honor the loyalty of Kostya, building a sculpture in his memory. I could say no place was more appropriate than Tolyatti, because the city’s namesake itself represents a great metaphor of loyalty: that of Palmiro Togliatti to the Soviet Union.
