Ranger 24?????

I saw a Ranger 24 on Yachtworld. It looks like a really neat boat. I'm shopping but I can't find any info on it. Displacement, headroom, rating, nothing! Can anyone send me a lnk? Cheers, Brian

Richard18988

I do not think a Ranger 24 sailboat was ever built. R23 and R26 etc. yes. Richard

R-24 There are two R-24s on yachtworld right now. I see that the newest one has some basic info on it. Interesting interior layout, the same on both. The cabin house is a swept back affair. I'm curious about the headroom still. Any other info?

RANGER 24 BUC showing 84-85-86 ranger 24 keel boats with an 8'4" beam and 4'1" draft, weighing in at 3200 lbs designed for outboard motor.

WRONG There were two Ranger sailboat companies. The 24' boat was built in Kent, Wasington. Don't know where the other company was located, but built the 22 & 26 & don't know what else. HGR

Ranger 24 Clarification There were two Ranger 24 models built bu a firm in Kent, Washington. One was a 1/4 Ton Class (IOR rule now defunct) and the other was a trailerable crusing boat with a clipper bow. The cruising boat has a cult following. The 1/4 tonner was almost a match for the SanJuan 24 and did have a very unconventional interior but is obviously meant to be a race boat. The firm name was Ranger boats. It had nothing to do with the Califorinia Rangers designed by Gary Mull as part of the Bangor Punta conglomerate.

nope Please read the posts. There were two Ranger boat companies. Cheers

(Kent) Ranger 24 exists Ray Richards of Seattle designed several boats in the mid '70s, built in Kent WA by Ranger Boats (not to be confused with Ranger Yachts). There is a 20', 24' and 26' Kent Ranger and a small dinghy. They are distinctively different from Gary Mull designs. Ranger Yachts, a sister company of Cal Boats, were built (mostly) in Costa Mesa CA by Jack Jensen who sold to Bangor Punta who owned several other famous brands, which in turn sold to Lier/Siegler and then went out of business. Before they did so they imported a French built/design called the Ranger Fun 23. Having sailed my Ranger 23 with a Kent Ranger 24, although the boats look very different, I can say they perform similarly. Each design had both short and tall rig versions so if you compare performance you need to know which one you're comparing to

1973 Kent Ranger Ranger 20

  • Description

Seller's Description

Legendary sailboat originally built 1973 in Kent, WA, fully restored in 2010 and well maintained since then. The Kent Ranger 20 is a popular boat and has a very proud fanbase. Only 600 were built over a span of 13 years. This is #153.

Ideal for inner bay family day sails like the SF Bay area. Its got a roomy cockpit with plenty of space for 4. It features an innovative fixed cuddy (cabin) with inbuilt storage bin seats. Perfect for wary family members to enjoy some wind protection while still being in on the action. Theres a cushioned seating/sleeping area and even a built in picnic table to lift up.

Shes very balanced on the helm, responsive, yet forgiving and I think its a fantastic trainer for sailing beginners. Completely dry in 15 knots nose wind and she can be sailed single handedly.

Hull and top is of outstanding quality, solid fiberglass-reinforced plastic throughout, completely repainted, new cushions plus new rigging - all in 2010. Shes got the original Evinrude 6 2-stroke engine which still works like charm. New bottom paint late 2018 by KKMI.

She comes with a newer main sail #40, original jib, genoa, a-sail (asymmetric spinnaker), anchor, custom covers for all teak details, plus other accessories. Connect a standard car battery and youll have cabin/anchor/runnings lights, speedometer, depth sounder and even a bilge pump.

Showings available from June 10th.

If you live in the North Bay: Shes currently berthed (docked) at a very attractive $250/month in Strawberry (near Tiburon) at Richardson Bay. It’s a fantastic sailing ground with predictable winds and top-notch views on SF, Alcatraz and Golden Gate. Lease transfer is available if you want to keep her at this location.

If you want to haul her away: The Kent Ranger 20 is a mid-size trailer sailer. Its easy to set-up/rig especially because the mast raises aft (from the front towards the back), so shrouds and forestay can be left attached. No trailer is provided but youll find many trailer models which will fit.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Later built by Intermountain Design of Utah, USA.

Hi Richman7777, I just bought my first sailboat last weekend, which is a Ranger 24. I'm sailing it in the SF Bay. Did I understand your post correctly that there were only 65 of these boats made? Very interesting! Greg

I suppose this thread is way too old but just in case, does anyone know the name of Tom Hukle's (Yacht Riggers) Kent Ranger 24 in Seattle? I bought his Haida 26 about 48 years ago. He said he then bought a new Ranger 24. I never saw it or pics so am just curious what it looked like (colors) and it's name. Thanks.

The Kent Ranger was designed by Ray Richards. They are lighter but not faster. I would definitely opt for a Ranger 23 or preferably a Ranger 26 due to its better construction quality and ease of handling. Click to expand...

Richman7777 said: I make decent speed (5.5-6.5 knots or less in light wind average) with my KR24 but won't pretend it's a very viable racer because you can't take the motor out of the water to race... that costs you about a half knot off the top. That said, I guess racing isn't everything. Here... Log in or sign up to view A few examples of just having some fun. Yes, the deck is solid. It's not really heavy because most of the deck is very thin. It's only thick where it needs to be strong. The boat weighs 3150 pounds dry with a 1400 pound keel. I haven't tried this yet, but I plan to. How about calling Ray Richards to ask about the KR24? Richards, Raymond H, Phone: (949) 642-6592? I have the original invoice for my boat as well as the factory brochure - but it's all 'chicken-scratched' up with the sail selection drawings of the buyer, or salesman - not sure which. They are not a very flat bottom boat. That's good and bad. They are about the smoothest rough water boat you will encounter but all that smoothness costs you in speed. I'm not pretending I won't be slower than most boats like a San Juan 24' but I will be safer and I'll have more usable space inside by a margin. I wouldn't pretend it would be as fast as nearly any 28' boat - that would be silly. But neither does the Dana 24' pretend to be fast and I can sail circles around the Dana... and have, since a buddy owns one and I did that as a point to rib him with over a glass of wine and many laughs. They are different boats designed for different purposes. Click to expand...
Hairy-o said: I also have. R24 and totally agree the boat is very stable, and maintains a decent hull speed. Click to expand...

This is a great little sailboat that has seen some good times and now it's time for me to let it go. It's the right size for a day sailer or a live aboard. I bought it 5 years ago and have sailed it up and down the sound. Now I have arthritis and can't really enjoy it like I want to, so I need to sell.

This boat was designed by Ray Richardson as a racer/offshore boat. So many features that make it stronger and more capable than a San Juan, for example. Solid fiberglass deck (no core rotting), easy access motor-well in cockpit, fulling encased keel (no keel bolts to rust and fail), comfortable seating for 6 adults inside, galley with stove, porta-head, mainsail made by Port Townsend Sails, and it has positive floatation - foam filled compartments that will keep the boat afloat if the hull is breached.

Bora is an excellent boat for new sailors, (we've taught adults and kids alike on it) with the rigging run to the cockpit for single handed sailing, and a 2 year old Mercury 5hp 20 in shaft motor that was properly broken in and has less than 20 hours on it (was $1500 new in 2018), weighing in at 52lbs so it is incredibly easy to lift out of the motor well and maintain. The deck has been upgraded with treadmaster tread, making for extra safe footing.

Mainsail has always been kept under UV cover and threads are strong, with no signs of pulling/weakening. The headsail is a 150 genoa on a furler that was bought used and put on 2 years ago (it does not have UV covering). There is an additional jib (I have never used and only taken out of the bag once, that I can's speak to it's condition), and a spinnaker (again, that I have never used, but it appears to be in good shape, and there is a pole aboard the boat). These two extra sails have been stored indoors in their bags.

It has a propane heater (with a 1 gallon tank and a hookup that can extend out to cockpit where we store the tank) making the cabin warm for all season sailing. It sleeps 4 comfortably, has plenty of built-in storage, and is great for trips to Blake Island and around the sound. It's currently moored at Bridgeview Marina in Bremerton, with tabs that are good through June.

These boats were built in Kent, WA, and aren't to be confused with the California Rangers--you can see the specs here:

It's a great little boat that I've sailed singlehandedly all the way down to Penrose Point State Park and back. It's not perfect, and it shows it's age, but it is in good shape. It is due for a haul out and bottom paint. It needs a new battery and water tank, the deck tread could use some glue on the edges, the front hatch needs new hinges, and there's a pulley that works but needs a new rivet. Those are the known maintenance issues.

I'm asking $2900 or serious best offers--I've greatly reduced the price, because of the work it needs, including a haul-out and bottom paint (it was last hauled out and bottom painted Nov. 2014--there's a bit of algae on the bottom, but not a reef). Please feel free to reach out to ask any follow-up questions. (motor shown in pictures is the old, larger motor).
