Mamma Mia yacht in peril

sailboat in mamma mia

The race to save the yacht that starred in Mamma Mia is on. Could you be her next saviour and owner?

The 54ft (16.5m) teak ketch that starred in Mamma Mia faces an uncertain future.  Tai-Mo-Shan is in urgent need of a new owner, after her current owner has been taken ill. The HS Rouse-designed yacht was built in 1933 to take five Royal Navy officers on a voyage from Hong Kong, where she was built (at the Hong Kong and Whampoa Shipyard) to England, via the Barents Sea, Alaska and the west coast of the Americas. The trip became the subject of a book – The Voyage of the Tai-Mo-Shan – and was later revealed to have been an espionage mission, in the manner of The Riddle of the Sands , to survey the Aleutian and Kurile isles for potential Allied submarine bases for an attack on the Japanese Navy.

Mama Mia

The yacht reached a wider audience when she starred in the box office hit Mama Mia in 2008. Tai-Mo-Shan  is currently afloat and moored among other classic yachts near the clubhouse at The Yacht Club of Greece in the Mikrolimano Marina at Piraeus  in Greece. She needs some work – most likely a new mast and some attention to the floors. It is thought about £50,000 would put her right. Her skipper of 20 years’ standing is available and on the scene. Tai-Mo-Shan , aside from her history, is a very attractive, fast, seaworthy yacht with an unusually large interior and recent engine and sails.

Skiathos: Taking The Mamma Mia Boat Trip with Poseidon

Beautiful buildings in Skiathos Old Port

As an unapologetic fan of both Mamma Mia! films, I knew that a boat trip was on the cards when I booked my trip to Skiathos.

Skiathos Town is one of the filming locations for the first film – although it’s a little bit blink-and-you’ll-miss-it . A lot of the film was actually filmed in Pinewood Studios in London.

But there are a few more filming locations over on neighbouring island Skopelos – a mere hour away. Thankfully there are several Mamma Mia! themed boat trips available from Skiathos Town which will take you there.

I choose to go with Poseidon as it’s the only boat from Skiathos which stops at right by Agios Ioannis, the clifftop chapel made famous as the location of Sophie’s wedding at the end of the first film (if you take a different boat you’ll need to get an expensive taxi if you want to walk up to the chapel).

Itineraries may change according to the weather and the schedule, but here’s what we got up to when we set sail for the imaginary island of Kalokairi…

Skiathos Old Port harbour

The boat leaves from the Old Port in Skiathos Town. This is actually one of the film locations – it’s where Sam and Harry arrive at the port and miss the ferry to Kalokairi (which is not a real island). Watch the film and you’ll briefly spy the blue-shuttered windows pictured above.

The boat left at 10 and I was advised to board at 9:30am to get a good spot on deck. I recommend going earlier though as there were plenty of people already on board by the time I got there (and this was early in the season so it wasn’t completely full).

FIRST STOP – MAMMA MIA CHURCH

The first stop is the best for Mamma Mia lovers. It took about 1 hour in good weather to reach Agios Ioannis (otherwise known as the Mamma Mia! church) from Skiathos Town.

Of course, the soundtrack is played as soon as you leave the harbour, and it was perfectly timed so that The Winner Takes It All was playing as we rounded the rocky cliff that is home to the Agios Ioannis chapel.

Cheesy but amazing .

Sadly the boat never quite comes alive with music a la Dancing Queen, though a few of us murmur along quite tunelessly.

The boat (pictured below) anchors at the beach next to the chapel. I’d say it was a 10-15 minute steep uphill walk. The path is fairly uneven and there were a few people on our trip who struggled, but most were fine. But it’s worth the effort for the view.

If you don’t want to walk up you can relax on the beach itself, which is beautiful – the water is an incredible shade of blue. There a small snack bar nearby too.

The chapel in real life is pretty tiny! You certainly couldn’t fit a wedding contingent in here.

The interior is very different from the one the film, which was a studio set based on the interior of Panagitsa tou Pirgou church in Skopelos Town.

SECOND STOP – SKOPELOS TOWN

Next the boat motored along the coast, past Amarantos (where Sophie reads Donna’s diary at the start of the film) and Glysteri (where they jump from the rocks in Our Last Summer) towards Skopelos Town for a lunch stop.

Skopelos Town was a delightful surprise.

There are no Mamma Mia locations in Skopelos Town itself.  But it doesn’t matter because I can tell you – Skopelos Town has vibes .

It’s a gorgeous harbour with very chilled (if slightly chi-chi) atmosphere. I spied a brewery that plays jazz, immaculate streets with pretty coloured balconies, great shopping, homemade ice-cream, and a juice bar. Is this where the hipsters come in the summer?

I had a large plate of tomatokeftedes with a red pepper and cheese dip and a Fix whilst watching the ferries and plotting a return trip.

In fact, I almost did a Sophie and stayed.

jewellery shop in Skopelos Town

THIRD STOP – BEACH

The third stop included on the tour depends on the day and also the weather.

The main Mamma Mia beach on Skopelos is Kastani. This is the where Lay All Your Love On Me and Does Your Mother Know were filmed. The jetty and beach bar no longer exist but you can still do your best Amanda Seyfried and writhe around on the beach in your swimsuit. Just be aware that the beach is pebbly rather than sandy.

We stopped at Milia, which is the next beach along the coast. It’s equally beautiful with incredible colours (particularly when the sun shines, or so I’m told as it was unfortunately forecast by the time we got there).

The beach itself at Milia wasn’t used as a location – possibly some shots were filmed between Milia and the nearby Dhasia islet but I’ve not managed to confirm this. I may be grasping at straws.

Whilst writing up this post I came across these amazing behind-the-scenes photos of filming on Skopelos which give you a great idea of how the scenery is used.

Milia Beach on Skopelos

And that wrapped up the boat tour, and we headed back to Skiathos Town in time for a sundowner at Bourtzi.

All in all, it’s an enjoyable and relaxing day- as long as you don’t have expectations of visiting all the locations or of everything looking the same as in the film. I can also imagine it’s considerably less relaxing in July and August when the boats are completely packed.

The locations are all worth a visit in their own right, and non-Mamma Mia! lovers will be pleased to note that the soundtrack is only played once. The poor staff must be completely sick of it.

Fans should note that throughout the summer there’s also frequent showings of the first film at the open-air cinema on the Bourtzi.

Thankfully this is where the cheese ends. The only other reference I saw to the films was an ice-cream parlour named after the film, and a few places called Sophie’s Apartments (or similar).

  • Description

Ferry Port - The town of Vis

We'll start our journey in the islands' capital - the ancient town of Vis. As soon as you step out of the boat you’ll be on the Mamma Mia set! In the movie, young Donna (Meryl Streep) misses the ferry due to a quirky employee at the border checkpoint. Luckily, she meets Bill (Stellan Skarsgard) at the dock and boards his sailing boat. All these scenes were shot in the Vis ferry port. Just a few steps away is B&B Dionis which was transformed in the movie into a colorful 'Greek market'. Scenes, where Donna is buying new clothes and Sam (Pierce Brosnan), has returned and looking for Donna are shot on the staircase in front of Dionis. Take a stroll down the charming stone streets of Vis and enjoy the island's relaxed vibe!

Prirovo peninsula

Few minutes stroll down the Vis port promenade will take you to the Prirovo peninsula, where is based Franciscan monastery and church of St. Jeronimo. In the movie young Donna and Bill are helping local fisherman Alexi get to the church St. Jeronimo where the love of his life should be married. Alexio and his bride manage to escape.

Srebrna bay

Srebrena (Silver) beach is one of the most beautiful island bays, wild and untouched (no water sports, restaurants, or cafes). The bay is exposed to the open sea and waves in the wintertime, giving the pebbles their unique color and formation. Unique beach scenery served as a perfect filming spot for a romantic walk under the moonlight of Donna and Sam. It is highly recommended to take a dip in the crystal clear sea of Srebrena bay!

Stiniva beach

The stunning landscape behind Sam’s first boat ride with Donna belongs to Stiniva bay, voted best European beach 2016. Stiniva is surrounded by high cliffs making the bay hidden for those unaware of its location. You can enter the bay swimming or by a small rowboat (the captain will provide you one).

Komiža town

Picturesque Komiža town was once primarily a fishing village, with harbor operative since the 12th century. Komiža is a typical Mediterranean seaside town, with narrow streets and houses squeezed together around the harbor. Famous restaurant ‘Jastožera’ in Komiža was transformed into the Greek taverna where Bill and Harry (Colin Firth) dinned and met an old friend, fisherman Alexio. Komiža town is recommended to stop for lunch.

Barjoška bay & Barjaci

The final stop was the one used the most while filming. Most beach scenes (Donna arriving on the island for the first time by sailboat, Sam leaving the island, and many more) were shot at the Barjoška bay. New paths and roads were built for the production of the movie. Performance of the song 'Dancing Queen' by 300 people who came on the island for the hotel grand reopening was shot north of Barjaška bay, in the Barjaci area.

[divider style=”dotted”]DAY 3 – June 29 – Dikili, Turkey

Dikili is a sleepy little beach town, authentically Turkish. The harbour is lined with open-air restaurants and shops with local food specialities Nearby, Bergama is worth a visit especially for its two main monuments: the Acropolis perched at a height of 280 metres and the Asklepion.

[divider style=”dotted”]DAY 4 – June 30 – Myrina Limnos, Greece

sailboat in mamma mia

It was Zeus who hurled Hephaestus from Mt. Olympus to land on Limnos, leaving the god of metalworking with a permanent limp. Perhaps he was nursed to health by excellent red and white wines (fortified or not) grown on Limnos volcanic soils. The town of Myrina sits under the winding white ramparts of the Kastro, built in 1186. But even earlier ruins – one of most ancient sites in Greece – lie in nearby Poliohni.

[divider style=”dotted”]DAY 5 – July 1 – Skiathos, Greece

sailboat in mamma mia

The most sophisticated of the Sporades, abounds with trendy shops where barely-clad visitors taking time off from the nearby beaches shop for expensive wisps of clothing and jewelry. Go a few blocks inland and you’ll find charming flower-decked houses and gardens overflowing with fruit trees.

[divider style=”dotted”]DAY 6 – July 2 – Skopelos, Greece

sailboat in mamma mia

A verdant island blessed with olive, almond and fruit trees. As you sail into the bay surrounding Skopelos town, it reminds you of a giant Greek amphitheatre. 120 churches nestle beneath the ruins of the Venetian castle, and two convents and a monastery cling to hills above the bay.

[divider style=”dotted”]DAY 7 – July 3 – Poros, Greece

sailboat in mamma mia

It’s barely a hop, skip and a jump from the Argolid Peninsula to the island of Poros, sometimes called Kaválria. Greece’s naval academy is here, and visitors can hear the cadets’ marching band every morning. The views from the Temple of Poseidon are eternal, which may be why the doomed orator Demosthenes chose to end his life here. Take a water taxi to Galatas for excursions to the fragrant lemon groves of Lemonodhássos, or venture inland to ancient Troezen or Epidauros.

Return to Pireaus for our trip back to Athens and flight home.

Facebook Group

You will be invited to a private Facebook group where you can meet, virtually, your fellow travelers, discuss the trip, make any preparation plans together, and share your excitement.

Our groups are typically 10-15 travelers. We aren’t a ‘big bus’ tour and don’t want to be. We don’t just look out the window and drive by the sights. Typically, our tours are custom and private. The advantage is, we can say, ‘stop here, we want to see this’ and we can stop and explore, even if it isn’t in the plan. Yes, we have an itinerary, but we also feel it’s important to take advantage of unexpected moments that arise. We attract travelers who are flexible and adventurous. A bit of spontaneity is a good thing!

(Please note, some tours lend themselves to a bit larger group so at times, we may expand the group to a maximum size of 25. We make group size decisions with the commitment that none of the spontaneity or sense of adventure will be impacted by the group size.)

You should know, our travelers are like you, they don’t want a canned tour, they like a sense of freedom on their trip, they understand the value of flexibility in travel, and they love the idea of working with a planning team that understands and respects their travel values.

So, Is this Trip for You?

  • You love traveling with like minded people and a tour company that is focused on traveling deeply into a destination, knowing how to read the group and make the best decisions for a perfect trip.
  • You find joy in trying new things, food, activities, etc.
  • Plans are good, and important to a great trip, however, flexibility sometimes brings a deeper experience and it’s OK with you.
  • You enjoy meeting and traveling with new people.
  • Some moderate physical activity will bring you the memories that make your trip special.

This Trip is Not for You If…

  • Travel is stressful and sometimes you find yourself anxious and frustrated when things don’t go perfectly as planned.
  • New things, new situations, aren’t really your thing.
  • You don’t like trying unusual local foods.
  • You feel uncomfortable and unsafe in places that are ‘foreign’ to Western culture.
  • Too much walking for long distances is tough.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often will I change accommodations during the trip?

This is a marine adventure and your accommodations will be onboard the boat during the duration of the trip.

Can I extend my stay?

Absolutely, adding a pre or post stay always enhances a trip. You spent the money to get there, why not stay a while? We will be happy to help you make plans.

What airport do I fly into and out of?

You will fly in and out of Athens, Greece and embark and disembark in Piraeus, Greece.

Who do I contact for other questions and travel advice?

Call us at 860-779-6531 or send an email to [email protected]

What is the age group of my potential fellow travelers?

Our guests typically range in age from 45-75. They tend to be of an age where they are either already retired and traveling is an objective for them, or are getting close. There are some tours that attract a younger group, sometimes adult children of a traveler in the group will join the tour.

Groups tend to be predominantly female, although we are wanting a good mix of men and woman, solo and couples traveling.

In any case, our travelers are in good health, active and adventurous.

I’m not a tour person, will this be too much of a standard tour for me?

No worries here, your fellow travelers feel exactly the same way and so do we, your tour curators. Of course there are some parts of our tours that are standard, we travel often by a van or motor coach, we eat together and do activities together. What makes us different, are two critical things, we don’t like traditional touring either, we work hard to be different. And two, you will always have the opportunity to choose. If you want to do something on your own or different than the group plan, you are welcome to do that.

We would love to have you join us! We will do our best to provide the opportunities and activities that allow you to make amazing memories and lasting friendships. We are looking forward to traveling with you.

Here We Go Again! Everything We Know About  Mamma Mia 3 , Including If Meryl Streep Plans to Return

From cast updates to potential plot details, here’s what we know so far about 'Mamma Mia! 3'

sailboat in mamma mia

The beloved Mamma Mia! franchise might not be over yet .

Christine Baranski , known for her role as Tanya, revealed that a third installment is in the works during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in August 2024.

The actress shared that she recently met with producer Judy Craymer, who is already “planning Mamma Mia 3 .” Baranski added, “She gave me the narrative plotline of how it’s going to happen. That’s all I can say!”

In teasing another sun-soaked adventure, Baranski noted that she’s optimistic about Craymer’s ability to “make things happen.” The Good Fight star noted, “She made number two happen, and it was a phenomenal hit. I wouldn’t put it past Judy Kramer to get everybody back together.”

Baranski’s enthusiasm comes three months after Mamma Mia! star Meryl Streep told Deadline in May 2024 that a meeting was “imminent” regarding proposals for her character’s return in a third film .

Here’s everything we know so far about the possibility of Mamma Mia! 3 .

Is there going to be a Mamma Mia! 3 ?

While nothing has been officially confirmed, Craymer told Daily Mail in June 2020 that a third movie was always part of the plan when she adapted the musical for the big screen.

"I think one day there will be another film, because there’s meant to be a trilogy," the Mamma Mia! creator said.

Fast forward to May 2023, the producer told Deadline that a third Mamma Mia! was "in its earliest stages,” but that nothing was "official" yet. Still, she voiced her vision of it being a three-movie series for a second time.

“I don’t want to over-egg it, but I know there’s a trilogy there.”

What has the cast said about returning for Mamma Mia! 3 ?

Baranski isn’t the first cast member of the Mamma Mia! franchise to express their enthusiasm about reprising their role in another film.

In an interview with Deadline , Streep, who took the lead as Donna in the first two films, said that a pressing meeting was in the works with respect to the possibility of her character (who died in the second film) returning for another installment.

“I don’t know how they’re going to do it,” she added. “They have an idea. I haven’t heard it yet but it’s in [my diary] and I’m going to hear about it pretty soon,” the Oscar-winning actress said, adding, “Of course I want to do it. I think folks love it.”

A year prior, Craymer revealed to Deadline in May 2023 that Streep reprising her role isn’t out of the question, explaining how much the actress enjoyed her character.

“There  is  a story there, and I do think Meryl should come back — and if the script is right, she would, I think, because she really loved playing Donna,” she said.

Jonathan Prime /Universal Studios /Courtesy Everett

Amanda Seyfried , who plays Streep’s on-screen daughter, Sophie, told Collider in June 2020 that losing Donna may open up more opportunities for continuing the narrative.

“Having Meryl’s character die kind of gave us so many good storylines,” she said. “It was kind of a genius idea because you're like, ‘No, we don't want to lose her.’ But at the same time, look at what you can do, you can go back.”

The Mean Girls alum added that the prospect of a third film would have overwhelming support from the cast.

“Listen, every single person in that movie would say yes in a heartbeat because we want to hang out with each other,” Seyfried told the outlet. “That's what we talked about last time, like did we ever think that we'd end up here again on an Island in Croatia?”

While Streep and Seyfried both expressed excitement, Baranski’s update is the most promising, as she told The Hollywood Reporter that “it’s not like, ‘Oh, I wish it could happen!’ Judy Kramer makes things happen.”

She noted that a third film would undoubtedly bring joy to fans of the franchise. “It’s just the kind of movie that makes people happy,” Baranski said. “Mamma Mia made so many millions of people around the world happy.”

When will Mamma Mia! 3 be released?

A release date for a potential third Mamma Mia! movie hasn't been announced by Universal Pictures.

How did Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again leave off?

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again served as both a prequel and a sequel to the first movie.

In the present, Sophie (Seyfried) prepares for the grand reopening of the Hotel Bella Donna in honor of her late mother, Donna (Streep). Throughout the film, we see flashbacks of a young Donna (Lily James) as she journeys to Kalokairi and her romances with young versions of Harry (Hugh Skinner), Bill (Josh Dylan) and Sam (Jeremy Irvine).

Meanwhile, Sophie grapples with her estranged relationship with Sky (Dominic Cooper) and the absence of her fathers — Harry ( Colin Firth ), Bill (Stellan Skarsgård) and Sam ( Pierce Brosnan ) — who are all overseas.

The movie concludes with a joyous celebration where Sophie, now pregnant, reconnects with Sky and feels closer to her mother than ever. The arrival of her grandmother, Ruby ( Cher ) and a reunion with her long-lost lover, Fernando ( Andy García ), adds to the festivities.

The film ends with Sophie giving birth to her son, Donny, while Donna's spirit watches over.

Where can I watch Mamma Mia! 1 and 2?

While fans await more updates on a potential third film, Mamma Mia! is available to watch on Max .

Viewers can also rent the first and second movie on Amazon Prime. The same is true for Apple TV+ for Mamma Mia! and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again . Google Play also offers both films to buy or rent .

Christine Baranski teases that she knows Mamma Mia 3 plot details: 'Some fabulous Greek or Croatian island'

The actress said she recently dined with franchise producer Judy Craymer, who Baranski said is actively developing a third "Mamma Mia" film.

sailboat in mamma mia

Christine Baranski is ready to once again dip her toes into the water(loo) as a cinematic dancing queen, as the Emmy-winning actress has teased that a third Mamma Mia film is in the works.

“We’ll all be on some fabulous Greek or Croatian island having a blast,” Baranski speculated in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter , telling the outlet that she has "hope" for a third movie in the ABBA -inspired movie musical series after she met with franchise producer Judy Craymer in London, where the creative mind filled her in on potential plot details for the planned Mamma Mia 3.

Baranski confirmed that Craymer "is planning  Mamma Mia 3" and that she gave her "the narrative plotline of how it’s going to happen" in a third movie.

Universal/courtesy Everett Collection

"That’s all I can say! But, it’s not like, 'Oh, I wish it could happen!' Judy Craymer makes things happen. She made number two happen, and it was a phenomenal hit. I wouldn’t put it past Judy Craymer to get everybody back together," Baranski continued, referencing her ensemble cast mates from the first two films, including Meryl Streep , Amanda Seyfried , Pierce Brosnan , Colin Firth , Stellan Skarsgård , Julie Walters , Dominic Cooper , Andy Garcia , and Cher .

Entertainment Weekly has reached out to Craymer and a representative for distributor Universal for comment.

Baranski said she savored the experience of making the first two films, which grossed $695 million and $402 million at the global box office in 2008 and 2018, respectively, and featured a plot centered around lyrics of ABBA's expansive pop discography.

"It’s just the kind of movie that makes people happy. Witnessing how much people are showing up for these Democratic campaign rallies now, there’s a lot of smiles, a lot of laughter. People are drawn to happiness and to joy, not doom and gloom," Baranski continued, noting the importance of pop music amid dire political times. " Mamma Mia  made so many millions of people around the world happy. Is it a little dumb, a little campy? That’s part of its charm. When I’m in Europe, I can’t tell you how many little girls want to be photographed with Tanya. It troubles me a little, that Tanya’s their favorite character. But, hey, we’re always attracted to that kind of snappy, sexy lady. Maybe we can get Kamala [Harris] to use one of the ABBA songs?"

Initially adapted from the jukebox stage musical of the same name, the first Mamma Mia film follows a young woman, Sophie (Seyfried), who, unbeknownst to her mother, Donna (Streep), invites three men (Brosnan, Firth, Skarsgård) to her Grecian wedding to determine which one is her father.

Baranski appeared among the supporting cast of both films as Tanya, who, alongside Rosie (Walters), once performed alongside Donna in her Donna and the Dynamos musical group.

Description

We know that driving along the curvy roads of Pelion can be quite stressful, especially when you plan to visit all the beautiful beaches that are spread out along the east coast. This is why we created a boat cruise where you can do exactly that, stress-free. Starting from either Chorefto or Agios Ioannis “Mamma Mia” is a 3-hour boat experience that takes you to some of the most well-known landmarks of Pelion: the beach of Fakistra and its grand cave, the port of Damouchari a Mamma Mia fan favourite, the beach of Mylopotamos an unbeatable Instagram sensation and finally the hard-to-reach but so worth it beach of Limnionas. During this trip, we will make short stops to swim in the waters of Fakistra and Limnionas, pause to take photos of Damouchari, Mylopotamos and Fakistra’s cave and last, but not least, we’ll explore the translucent waters of a secret place along the coast that few people know about (and we want to keep it this way). “Mamma Mia” is an ideal experience for travellers who want to avoid the curves and the hustle.

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between your boat trips.

They take place in different areas. “Mamma Mia” travels the central east coast of the peninsula, while our favourite and strongly recommended “Sea Caves of Thetis” brings us to the northeast and uninhabited Pelion, to the area of the legendary sea caves.

What happens if the weather is bad?

A trip will be cancelled in case of rain, winds stronger than 10 knots, and/or wave height greater than 0.6 meters. In such case, if there is availability you will be able to reschedule your trip or just cancel it (of course with no cancellation fees).

What type of boat are you using?

We use a 7-meter long open boat, powered with a 175 horsepower motor.

Does the boat have a tent?

Yes, it does. But do not expect much since boat tents provide basic cover for just a small part of the boat. This is also affected by the angle of the sun and the direction of the boat. Come prepared with sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses.

How many people will be on the boat?

The boat is licenced to take on board maximum 10 guests. The average number of participants joining this trip is 6.

We are a group of more than 10 people, can we join this trip?

Yes, you can! For groups of 11+ people, we use additionally a second boat of approximately the same characteristics. This means that your group will travel at the same time, but divided into two boats. You will be able to be with your friends and family during the swimming breaks.

Which option should I choose as a starting point?

You may choose either the port of Chorefto or the port of Agios Ioannis, as the starting point for your trip. We advise you on choosing the closest location to your accommodation or the one fitting better with the rest of your plans for that day.

Why Pelion ?

The rare combination of sea and mountain, with charming beaches and forested slopes, renders Mountain Pelion a hidden and magical place to be explored and discovered!

Why Pelion Scout ?

Our aim is to share the beauties and secrets of Pelion with travellers searching for responsible recreational tourism! Whether you are looking for a family-friendly activity or you are into some serious action, our daily activities and multi-day trips are suitable for everyone!

MY Mamma Mia Cuisine Superyacht Stories

Describing the culinary experience on board Mamma Mia, Captain Kyriakos says, “When you have a first class chef that works with superior produce, particularly Greek products which are recognized the world over for their high quality, the end result – both nutritionally and in terms of presentation – can only be described as ‘thespesio’ (divinely delicious, in Greek!).”

A typical menu might begin with a mixed seasonal salad with grilled halloumi cheese, freshly caught scallops with cauliflower puree and anchovy foam, a main course of steamed clams with almond sabayon, ending with a mouthwatering strawberry pavlova.

preview for Mamma Mia! I Have a Dream trailer

Since the release of Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again in 2018, fans have clamoured for a third instalment in the musical series inspired by the iconic works of ABBA.

Baranski, who plays Tanya Chesham-Leigh in the films, has now revealed that she recently caught up with Mamma Mia creator Judy Craymer to discuss the threequel's plot.

"I was in London with Judy Craymer at our favourite watering hole, she is planning Mamma Mia 3 . She gave me the narrative plotline of how it's going to happen. That's all I can say!" she told The Hollywood Reporter .

"But it's not like, 'Oh, I wish it could happen!' Judy Craymer makes things happen. She made number two happen, and it was a phenomenal hit. I wouldn't put it past Judy Craymer to get everybody back together."

Baranski went on to discuss why the musical adaptations are so beloved, saying: "It's just the kind of movie that makes people happy. Mamma Mia made so many millions of people around the world happy.

"Is it a little dumb, a little campy? That's part of its charm. When I'm in Europe, I can't tell you how many little girls want to be photographed with Tanya. It troubles me a little, that Tanya's their favourite character. But, hey, we're always attracted to that kind of snappy, sexy lady."

In October 2023, Craymer confirmed that a third movie definitely "will happen" – it's just a matter of when.

Meryl Streep , who plays Donna Sheridan in the movies, later revealed that she's due to have a discussion about the latest instalment.

"I don't know how they're going to do it. They have an idea. I haven't heard it yet but it's in [my diary] and I'm going to hear about it pretty soon," she said to Deadline , adding: "Of course I want to do it. I think folks love it."

Amanda Seyfried , Pierce Brosnan and Lily James have also shared that they would love to rejoin their cast members for a third outing.

Mamma Mia! is available to stream on Netflix.

Christine baranski says ‘mamma mia 3’ is in the works — and she knows the plot.

My, my, they could never let it go.

“Mamma Mia!” star Christine Baranski , 72, told the Hollywood Reporter in an interview published Aug. 13, “I was in London with [producer] Judy Kramer at our favorite watering hole, [and] she is planning ‘Mamma Mia 3.’ She gave me the narrative plotline of how it’s going to happen.”

“The Gilded Age” star explained that Kramer was the type of producer who “makes things happen” instead of saying that she “[wishes] it could happen.”

Baranski said the producer made the second “Mamma Mia!” movie, 2018’s ”Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” happen, and it was “a phenomenal hit,” so she “wouldn’t put it past” her “to get everybody back together.”

Christine Baranski smiling.

The second film grossed over $400 million at the global box office on a $75 million budget.

The first “Mamma Mia!” movie premiered in 2008. Based on the music of ABBA , it was set on the fictional Greek island of Kalokairi. It followed a bride, Sophie (Amanda Seyfried), who secretly invited three men to the wedding who might be her father: Sam (Pierce Brosnan), Bill (Stellan Skarsgård) and Harry (Colin Firth).

Meryl Streep plays Sophie’s mother, Donna, and Baranski plays Tanya, a wealthy divorcée and Donna’s friend.

In the zany second movie , Sophie prepares to reopen her now-deceased mother’s hotel while flashbacks show a young Donna (played by Lily James). The second movie ended with Sophie having a baby boy while Donna’s ghost looks on.

Kramer previously hinted at a third film in an interview with Vogue , saying that there “has to be another one” because fans want it.

She added, “The trouble is we’re all getting older . . . But, we couldn’t be in a better place as far as having a cast who are eager to do it.”

Streep told the outlet that she would participate in future movies.

“I’m up for anything . . . I told Judy if she could figure out a way to reincarnate Donna, I’m into that. Or it could be like in one of those soap operas where Donna comes back and reveals it was really her twin sister that died,” the Oscar winner said.

Baranski said that she was eager to film in Greece.

“We’ll all be on some fabulous Greek or Croatian island having a blast,” Baranski shared about the third film. “I hope.”

“The Good Fight” star went on to tip her hat to the franchise’s fans.

“ ‘Mamma Mia!’ [has] made so many millions of people around the world happy,” Baranski said.

“Is it a little dumb, a little campy? That’s part of its charm.”

She said that when she travels, young fans approach her.

The Big Picture

  • Christine Baranski hints at possible Mamma Mia! 3 during recent interview with promising updates for fans.
  • Judy Kramer's track record of success with Mamma Mia! films makes a third installment seem likely.
  • Though no release date has been confirmed yet, fans can look forward to potentially returning to Kalokairi.

Could audiences head back to Kalokairi in the near future? Christine Baranski thinks so. The performer who played Tanya Chesham-Leigh in both Mamma Mia! movies provided a promising update regarding a third installment during a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter . While nothing is set in stone at the moment, the making of another romantic story based on the music of ABBA could become a reality sooner rather than later. Heres' what Baranski had to say when asked about the development of a third Mamma Mia! film:

I was in London with [producer] Judy Kramer at our favorite watering hole, she is planning Mamma Mia 3 . She gave me the narrative plotline of how it’s going to happen. That’s all I can say! But, it’s not like, “Oh, I wish it could happen!” Judy Kramer makes things happen. She made number two happen, and it was a phenomenal hit. I wouldn’t put it past Judy Kramer to get everybody back together.

After all, Judy Kramer and the team behind the musicals know exactly what they're doing. The first Mamma Mia! earned $694 million at the global box office when it was released over a decade ago. Considering how modest the budget for the adaptation was, it immediately became a massive hit for Universal Pictures . The story of Sophie Sheridan ( Amanda Seyfried ) and her quest to find out who her father was also became a beloved pop culture treasure, with a devoted fan base constantly asking to visit the character once again.

Their wish came true a decade later, when the studio released Mamma Mia!: Here We Go Again . Serving as both a prequel and a sequel to the first movie, the second installment introduced Lily James as a younger version of Donna Sheridan. The character was portrayed by Meryl Streep in the first movie. While Donna was revealed to have passed away between the two Mamma Mia! stories, that didn't stop Streep from reprising her role for a couple of very emotional sequences.

When Will 'Mamma Mia 3' Be Released?

A release date for a potential third Mamma Mia! movie hasn't been released by Universal Pictures. It might take some time for the company to officially announce the project, but Baranski's update regarding the feature is the most promising one so far. While the idea of another Mamma Mia! film has been floating around since Mamma Mia!: Here We Go Again was released, the project hasn't moved forward. But Judy Kramer coming up with a premise for what's next for Sophie is more concrete than the creative team merely thinking about moving forward with another sequel.

Mamma Mia 3 doesn't currently have a release date. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.

‘Mamma Mia 3’ is in the works, confirms cast member Christine Baranski

Baranski also suggested: "Maybe we can get Kamala to use one of the Abba songs?"

Mamma Mia 3 is reportedly in the works, according to cast member Christine Baranski.

The actress, who plays Tanya Chesham-Leigh in the ABBA jukebox musical film series, gave the new update to The Hollywood Reporter, saying she had met with producer Judy Craymer in London.

“She is planning Mamma Mia 3 ,” she told the publication. “She gave me the narrative plotline of how it’s going to happen. That’s all I can say! But, it’s not like, “Oh, I wish it could happen!” Judy Kramer makes things happen. She made number two happen, and it was a phenomenal hit. I wouldn’t put it past Judy Craymer to get everybody back together.”

“We’ll all be on some fabulous Greek or Croatian island having a blast,” she said separately, “I hope.”

Baranski also said  Mamma Mia  was “just the kind of movie that makes people happy,” adding: “Witnessing how much people are showing up for these Democratic campaign rallies now, there’s a lot of smiles, a lot of laughter. People are drawn to happiness and to joy, not doom and gloom.

Mamma Mia 2

“ Mamma Mia made so many millions of people around the world happy,” she continued, saying: “Is it a little dumb, a little campy? That’s part of its charm.

“When I’m in Europe, I can’t tell you how many little girls want to be photographed with Tanya. It troubles me a little, that Tanya’s their favorite character. ( Laughs .) But, hey, we’re always attracted to that kind of snappy, sexy lady.”

Baranski then finally joked: “Maybe we can get Kamala to use one of the Abba songs?”

Rumours of a third Mamma Mia movie first started swirling back in 2020, where producer Judy Craymer revealed that  a third film was in the works.

Since then, Amanda Seyfried revealed that she would participate in a third sequel , but Universal “probably can’t afford us to be honest”.

“I hate to say it, because would I do Mamma Mia 3 for free — of course I would — but that’s not the business we’re in. What’s fair is fair, and I feel like a third film is gonna come down to something stupid like whether or not Universal wants to pay the money.”

Meanwhile Meryl Streep – whose character was killed off for the third sequel – said she was “up for anything,” adding: “I’ll have to schedule a knee scoping before we film, but if there’s an idea that excites me, I’m totally there. I told [producer Judy Craymer] if she could figure out a way to reincarnate Donna, I’m into that. Or it could be like in one of those soap operas where Donna comes back and reveals it was really her twin sister that died.”

She joked: “We may have to call it Grand-Mamma Mia! by the time we make it!”

Channing Tatum's Gambit, 'Mamma Mia 3,' and More Big Movie News

The popular saying "the third time's the charm" rings true in the film world as well, especially given the third installment updates that came out this week. From viewers getting transported to Greece for yet another sing-along with Mamma Mia 3 to the third movie of a Disney animated franchise getting an official release date, there are lots of upcoming sequels to get excited about. On top of these two announcements, years after Michelle Yeoh was officially cast as part of the Avatar universe, we are finally aware of when exactly she will appear in the upcoming films. In addition, it was also revealed this week what happened to Channing Tatum 's Gambit at the end of Deadpool & Wolverine . To keep you on par with the latest movie news, here is a handy roundup with some major stories worth noting.

Here We Go Again, 'Mamma Mia 3' May Be on the Table

Mamma Mia might've gotten a follow-up in 2018, but musical enthusiasts can't help but want to sing along to more ABBA tunes alongside the beloved main cast. Thanks to Christine Baranski 's (who played Tanya Chesham-Leigh in both films) revelation in a recent interview, it seems like round 3 will likely happen. During her conversation with The Hollywood Reporter about her work in The Gilded Age and Nine Perfect Strangers , the actress shared an update as to the third installment:

"I was in London with [producer] Judy Kramer at our favorite watering hole, she is planning Mamma Mia 3 . She gave me the narrative plotline of how its going to happen. Thats all I can say! But, its not like, Oh, I wish it could happen! Judy Kramer makes things happen. She made number two happen, and it was a phenomenal hit. I wouldnt put it past Judy Kramer to get everybody back together."

Given that the sequel is still early on in the development process, a release date and returning cast is still under wraps.

James Cameron Returns to Director's Chair for More 'Avatar' Sequels

For a while, it was unclear whether James Cameron would go back to directing the Avatar franchise. Rumors were swirling that the Oscar-winning filmmaker would pass on the torch to another director after Avatar 3 (which has been officially entitled Avatar: Fire and Ash ), and only work on the sequels as a producer. On Wednesday, Cameron cleared the air by confirming that he plans to helm the sequels. Here is what he shared with The Hollywood Reporter:

"Sure. Absolutely. I mean, they're going to have to stop me. I got plenty of energy, love doing what I'm doing. Why would I not? And they're written, by the way. I just reread both of them about a month ago. They're cracking stories. They've got to get made. Look, if I get hit by a bus and I'm in an iron lung, somebody else is going to do it."

In addition to this news, the filmmaker also shared the release dates for both Avatar 4 and 5, which are projected to arrive in theaters in 2029 and 2031 respectively. Although it will take a while for the sequels to come out, he also gave an update as to when Michelle Yeoh will be part of the franchise. The actress who rose to prominence with her role in Everything Everywhere All at Once will not be featured in the third installment but will be part of the other films.

Gambit's Fate After 'Deadpool & Wolverine' May Have Been Revealed

Deadpool & Wolverine has proven to be a lucrative fan service, featuring several unexpected cameos, including that of Gambit (played by Channing Tatum). The last time that viewers saw the character was during a battle against Casandra Nova ( Emma Corrin ), leaving audiences unsure of what happened to him after the conflict. Weeks after the film's release, a post-credit scene revealed the character's fate, showing him walking on a street, implying that he is still alive. In an interview with Collider's own Perri Nemiroff , Tatum shared that he believes Gambit is still in the void, and that maybe there is more happening to him at that moment than what meets the eye. The actor also shared that he isn't sure if he will go back to playing the character again, but is hopeful that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige might reach out to him in the future.

Greta Gerwig Won't Make a 'Barbie' Follow-up Anytime Soon

Don't expect to be pulled into Barbie Land again soon, because Greta Gerwig just made it clear that she isn't itching to do a follow-up to the box office hit just yet. In an interview for 60 minutes, the director expressed her interest in taking on other original ideas, instead of making another film about the Mattel doll. Here is an excerpt of her response to the future of Barbie :

"Why can't it be another big, original, bold idea where we get an amazing filmmaker, a big budget to play with, and the trust of a huge conglomerate behind them to go and really play? I want to do that."

In the meantime, Gerwig is drawing her attention to the adaptation of the Chronicles of Narnia for Netflix. The filmmaker will work on the first two installments of the franchise, which will begin with the first novel from C.S. Lewis ' book series, The Magician's Nephew .
