Catamarans aren’t always the most luxurious of vessels, but one German outfit is hoping to change that.

Ultimate Catamarans has teamed up with Italian firm Luxury Projects on a new line of multihulls designed to bring seafarers all the comforts of a superyacht. Better still, each cat is equipped with the latest green tech to ensure cleaner cruising on the high seas.

The Spaceline range comprises three models of differing sizes, including an 88-footer, a 120-footer and a 150-footer. Each vessel sports a lightweight aluminum hull that the company claims is as stable and sturdy as an SUV.

Each model is equipped with a hybrid-propulsion system comprising solar panels and batteries. It’s not dissimilar to the system featured on Silent’s range of solar-powered catamarans. The team says the cats will also be “hydrogen-ready” and could incorporate fuel-cell technology in the future.

The Spaceline 88.  Utlimate Catamarans/Luxury Projects

The Spaceline 150 is the flagship offering. A true go-anywhere vessel, it promises seven days of autonomy at sea and could eventually be fitted with an ice-class steel hull. With a volume of 640 GT, it offers an interior of roughly 4,300 square feet and an exterior of 7,500 square feet. It can sleep 12 guests across five cabins and sports a giant helipad aft that can accommodate an EC135 or even an Agusta 109. Think of it as a catamaran crossed with an explorer.

The Spaceline 120 is perhaps the most superyacht-like out of the trio. It comes with glitzy amenities, like a spa, a gym and a sundeck. The layout can be customized to each seafarer’s liking, too. As standard, though, the 3,700-square-foot interior houses five cabins. In addition, the vessel touts a transatlantic range of 3,500 nautical miles.

Billed as a pocket catamaran, the Spaceline 88 is the smallest of the three but still plenty mighty. With a volume of 270 GT, it offers nearly 2,000 square feet of interior space, four guest cabins and room for five crew. She also has a range of 2,500 nautical miles.

It’s worthwhile noting there are already a few big players creating elegant catamarans : Sunreef , Rossinavi and Silent, to name but a few. Hey, who doesn’t like a little friendly competition?

Ultimate Catamarans reveals 29.5m Spaceline 100 concept

Ultimate Catamarans has revealed its latest concept; the 29.5 metre Spaceline 100.

Available in solar, power and hybrid versions, the Spaceline 100 features a 13 metre beam, resulting in 800 square metres of living areas on board. Spread across four decks, the yacht boasts a 2.2 metre standing height across all levels and spaces.

Accommodation on board is for a total of 12 guests across five guest suites and a master cabin, all of which feature private balconies. Crew accommodation meanwhile is for a total of six staff.

Spacious interior living areas include a 109 square metre main saloon, which is flooded with natural light thanks to large windows. Elsewhere, a fitness centre features four exercise machines.

Two hydraulic tender garages can store a multitude of toys and tenders, including two electric jet skis, SUPs and equipment for water skiing, paragliding, diving and canoeing.

Designed for leisurely cruising without engine noise, the solar energy version features 226 square metres of solar panels combined with a 550-kW battery for a top speed of up to 13 knots. Two traditional diesel engines are also found on board.

Designed for faster cruising, with a top speed of 18 knots and cruising speed of 12 knots, the power option version is powered by two diesel engines.

The hybrid version can be powered by a combination of battery-electric and solar-generated energy or by two traditional diesel engines.

Frequently asked questions

How long can i charter a yacht for.

Charters can be set for any duration under or over a week. We do offer day charters as well on a select number of yachts.

Can I select which day of the week the charter will start?

Yes, charter schedules are often very flexible and can choose any day of the week to depart. However, rates do fluctuate depending on the season. High season rates apply to the most popular charter periods, i.e. July/August and Christmas/New Year, and are also normally applicable to all major events. Low season rates apply to all other periods unless otherwise stipulated.

How do I calculate the charter rate?

Charters over seven days are calculated pro-rata against the weekly rate divided by seven and multiplied by the number of charter days. For charters less than a week, the weekly rate is divided by six and multiplied by the number of days.

What is included in the charter rate?

Included in rate for all term charters is use of the yacht for specified time, crew, and water toys.

What is not included in the charter rate?

APA for expenses, Tax (if applicable), Gratuity to crew, and Repositioning fee (if applicable) are not included in the charter rate.

What is APA?

Expenses for any charter is collected at final payment in the form of an Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA). This sum is usually equivalent to 30% of the total charter fee, but may be 35% in some cases. Intended to cover the operating expenses of a charter as explained under Charter Terms. The APA will be given to the captain before the start of your charter. ANY remainder balance is given back to the charterer at the conclusion of the charter.

How much should I tip the crew?

Crew gratuities are at the charterers discretion, although it is customary for a charterer who has enjoyed the kind and attentive service of an obliging crew to extend a gratuity. Crew gratuities are normally between 15%-20% of the charter fee, but can be adjusted up or down according to your level of satisfaction.

What is a repositioning fee?

If you want to charter a yacht from a different location than their home port, or you want to get off at another harbor, the costs for transporting the vessel from or to the home port will be calculated by the captain and added to the charter rate.

Can I select the itinerary for my cruise?

Yes, the itinerary is totally customizable and designed for each guest. Our charter specialist will design an itinerary based on your preferences. Boatsetter brokers work with the Captain to make advance reservations for many activities, such as sightseeing tours, vehicle rentals, and restaurant reservations. During your charter, your Captain and crew will take care of any arrangements for you and adjust itinerary as well.

Am I allowed to smoke onboard the yacht?

Yes, smoking is permitted on the aft deck or flybridge. No smoking is permitted in the interior of the yacht.

How many people are allowed on board the yacht?

On day charters, 12 guests is the maximum occupancy of any commercial charter. When chartering a yacht overnight, the number of staterooms needs to correlate to guests staying onboard. Typically, each stateroom holds up to 2 guests.

How do I make sure I have everything I need on board (food, wine, etc.)?

Prior to departure, our team will ask you to complete a detailed preference sheet describing the preferences and special needs of all the members of your party, such as dietary or medial requirements, details of any allergies, and your sporting or entertainment requests. This will enable the crew of your chosen yacht to ensure you have a flawless experience during your stay onboard.

How many guests are allowed on your yacht rental?

Malarky Charters is Coast Guard certified to have up to 12 guests on board. If you’re looking for a party boat rental for 13 or more guests, check out Triton Charters.

How big is malarky and what's the interior like?

Malarky is 47ft in length with 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a large indoor lounge and a modern decor.

Where does the yacht charter go?

Your charter will begin in San Diego Bay, more specifically, in America’s Cup Harbor. Once boarded, our Captain will guide our yacht through San Diego Bay, passing all of it’s major monuments, and even under the Coronado Bridge. Want to go a specific route? Just ask your captain! 

How long should we rent the yacht for?

Malarky has a minimum of 2 hours required to rent the boat. That being said, to get the most of the yacht charter experience we recommend 3-4 hours.

Where are you located?

Malarky Charters address is 2700 Shelter Island Dr. San Diego, CA 92106 Our office is located at 2700 Shelter Island Dr. and our charter is located on our commercial dock just south of our office. If you are arriving for your charter, our vessel is located on our commercial dock behind Ketch Kitchen and Taps in Shelter Island.

What is your cancelation policy?

All cancellations are to be made 14 days prior to the scheduled departure time to receive a full refund. Cancellation made within 14 days of the charter will forfeit their deposit. Any cancellations made within 72 hours before the charter will forfeit the full amount of the contracted services and are non-refundable.

Where do we go on the yacht charter?

Unlike other yacht rentals, Malarky Charters does not give you a “cookie cutter” experience. Our captain and crew will recommend a route, but ultimately you can go wherever you want!

What will we see during the charter?

San Diego Bay has some of the most amazing monuments to see from the water! The stunning Coronado Bridge connects San Diego to Coronado Island and offers breathtaking views of the bay. You can also marvel at the USS Midway Museum, a historic naval aircraft carrier museum located at Navy Pier, showcasing a collection of aircraft and exhibits. Another highlight is the Star of India, the world’s oldest active sailing ship, docked at the Maritime Museum of San Diego. As you cruise along, you’ll pass by Seaport Village, a waterfront shopping and dining complex with picturesque views and unique shops. At the tip of Point Loma, the Cabrillo National Monument commemorates the landing of Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo and offers panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and San Diego Bay. The Embarcadero Marina Park provides scenic open spaces, walking paths, and views of the bay and city skyline. You’ll also sail by Shelter Island, a long strip of land offering marinas, parks, and a distinctively nautical ambiance, and Harbor Island, known for its resorts, marinas, and dining options, providing excellent views of the city and the bay. What do we need to bring?

Malarky Charters allows you to bring your own food and drinks (this includes alcohol). Be sure to bring food that is easily accessible and easy to clean up! Please do not bring any red wine aboard, or glass cups. All liquids contained in glass will be put into plastic cups. Feel free to bring towels, sunscreen and a big smile!

Once you confirm your reservation, your broker will process your payment.

• If you are booking for a single day and your reservation is confirmed more than 7 days in advance, a deposit of either $1,000 USD or 50% of the total cost of the reservation (whichever is greater) is processed immediately in order to hold the yacht. Once your embarkation date is 7 days away, the remainder of the amount due is processed.
• If you are booking for a single day and your reservation is made 7 days or less in advance, the total price of your reservation is processed immediately.
• If you are booking for a multi-day charter and your reservation is confirmed more than 30 days in advance, a deposit of 50% of the cost of the yacht is processed immediately in order to hold the yacht. Once your embarkation date is 30 days away, the other 50% is collected for the price of the yacht, plus the APA, plus the taxes due.

Terms of refunds are dictated by the Charter Agreement. Generally, once a payment is collected, it is non-refundable. In certain circumstances, as dictated by the Charter Agreement, credits can be provided so you will be able to enjoy your yacht charter at a future date that is convenient for you.

Where to Eat, Stay, and Play in Montauk, New York's Summer Playground

As the very last town on the eastern tip of Long Island, connected by only a small stretch of land, Montauk feels worlds away from the bustle of New York City and the doldrums of suburban Long Island.

Coined “The End,” the glamorous beach town has long welcomed the type of traveler who says things like “ Where do you summer ?” It’s a question I heard often growing up on the north shore of Long Island, New York —it seemed as though everyone around me “ summered ” in Montauk , and I’ll be honest, I was quick to resent it for that reason. Phrases like “ summer house mansions ” and “big-boy yachts ” gave the town a pretentious air. I so badly wanted to hate it, until I arrived.

A decade-plus of summer visits there have shown me that while Montauk most certainly has glitz, it has depth, too. Look to the communities of beach-campers clinging to the sound of crashing waves at dusk, gazing out at the deep blue Atlantic . Or to the nature of the peninsula, with its sand dunes, coastal forests, and grasslands. In this ever-evolving tourist destination, sandy streets are lined with designer and boutique shops, old wooden taverns and fine dining restaurants, and are often filled with recreational bikers. From beach to bar, Montauk is the place for ocean lovers, adventure seekers, and glamorous foodies alike.

How to get there

There’s no way around it—the drive can sometimes be over three hours from NYC , though there’s something special about the collective journey out east. Those leaving from Manhattan, Brooklyn, Long Island, or New Jersey without a car have the option to ride on the beloved Hampton Jitney bus, go by train on the Long Island Rail Road , or even fly into Islip Airport (ISP) . If you are driving yourself, try to leave on a weekday (Thursday’s better than Friday, to beat the start of the weekend rush). If that’s not possible, try to leave hours before the island’s rush hour. To really avoid traffic, aim to leave NYC prior to 2 p.m.

Where to stay

There’s too much to do in Montauk for just a day trip, so plan to stay for at least the weekend. Summer rentals fill up fast—if you’re looking for a hotel, Solé East Resort exudes coastal elegance, and brings a St. Tropez –inspired stay to the East End. Inside the American Tudor building, guest rooms are bungalow-style; the elevated poolside Backyard Restaurant has just undergone a total renovation. The property often hosts events, including live DJs on the weekends, and conveniently sits just a mile from the town’s buzzy downtown village and a five-minute walk to the beach.

Montauk Yacht Club is one of the town’s already-hot newcomers. Returning travelers might remember the space as Gurney’s Star Island resort—but as of summer 2024, it’s open under new management following a multi-million dollar renovation. While there’s much to explore, travelers really do not have to leave the lakeside resort, located alongside a popular marina destination, to experience a restful and genuinely fun stay-cation. There are two updated pools—one, further down on the dock near the new padel courts, is geared toward larger family groups. The other is a spacious, buzzy, adults-only pool near the space’s new outdoor cocktail bar. Here, visitors can fall in love with the glitzy side of Montauk and love every minute of it.

Daunt’s Albatross Motel has that special something that just might make travelers want to return every summer. Its charming old-school feel derives from its history as a family-owned oasis—the Daunt family purchased the space back in 1977. It was a seaside retreat for the once low-key village, primarily host to the fishing-surfer-type. Today, the property (including its restaurant, The Bird, across the street) has been completely renovated with a pool and campfire space. It is run by the young and impressive Leo Daunt, grandson of the original owner. He grew up on the property—and is often on-site with his sweet dog, Koda—and it's evident he put his whole heart into its renovation. The location is just another plus, propped in the heart of Montauk, just around the corner from the beach.

For the ultimate beachfront stay, head to Marran Montauk . Half of the guest rooms face the ocean, so some guests will have the advantage of waking up to crashing waves. Inside, the 1960s retreat's refined design and chic interiors ooze that specific high-end essence that fits so well with the town. And yet, the beach vibes remain high—it's not uncommon to see guests walking barefoot through the lobby to and from the sand. It’s just a couple blocks off Montauk’s quieter eastern end, making it easy to enjoy a sun-soaked beach day without the influx of large summer crowds.

Where to eat and drink

As much as Montauk is a beach-centric destination, it has also become a culinary hotspot for all sorts of foodies. And despite the influx of visitors over the past two decades, the peninsula has maintained its commitment to using mainly fresh, locally sourced ingredients and produce. Be sure to stop at the brand-new Shark Bar on the way there or back—it’s along the stretch of Napeague, right before you drive in or out of Montauk. Laid-back with a surf shack look, the menu offers elevated tiki classics (I highly recommended the lobster fried rice and crispy calamari). It opened for the 2024 summer season by the owners of the (also new, and already beloved) Maverick’s Montauk . Head here for a mouthwatering surf-and-turf dinner. It’s the perfect equation: enjoy selections from an extensive wine menu, next to floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Fort Pond, best reserved for an indulgent sunset dinner.

For breakfast or lunch, head to the hip little joint of Joni’s Montauk . Just south of Montauk village’s Main Street, the space offers an extensive menu filled with organic and fresh ingredients. They serve delicious sandwiches and salads, with heaps of options for vegetarians and vegans. Also for lunch, and closer to Gosman’s , is a true old-school Montauk gem, The Dock . Situated right on the waterfront, head here for fresh seafood appetizers (and perhaps an iced cold draft beer like the local to your right). It’s a quirky space—one of the classics that Montauk would not be the same without. And on the topic of classics, the Montauket , known as “the hill” by locals, has been kicking since the late 1920s (and family owned since 1959). It’s the perfect laid-back scene to watch the sunset over Gardiner’s Island, with a pleasant touch of live music.

Whether you’re a hotel guest at Montauk Yacht Club or not, head to their new restaurant Ocean Club Montauk for the greatest just-caught seafood dishes, and selected dishes of Braai—a traditional method of South African grilling (a nod to the space’s acclaimed head chef, Jarad McCarroll , who is South African himself). Especially when dining outdoors, along the pool and marina, Ocean Club is the epitome of taste, with its swanky ambiance, meticulous platings, and cohesive flavors. Try the seabass tartare, or the picanha, an item off of the Braai menu that is carefully prepared for over six hours).

Then there’s The Bird Restaurant, a separate property from Daunt’s Albatross that's also owned and renovated by Leo Daunt. It’s just across the street—and a must to visit both day and night. For breakfast or lunch, grab a bite out back in the garden-like patio. The menu is a fusion of cultures, primarily serving twists on American classics. All of the dishes are crafted and inspired by the brilliant chef Marco Martinez, a native of Rincón , Puerto Rico . New this summer: by night, the space turns into a moody and groovy cocktail bar, with special speakeasy nights on Saturdays, as well as karaoke and trivia on the weekdays. Sail Inn is another quirky spot—a tavern and inn, it’s a perfect dive with homestyle plates, and more importantly, a full bar, pool table, darts, and karaoke every summer Friday. It was recently sold to (and lightly refreshed by) mother-and-son duo Colleen Croft and Luca Guaitolini—who also own Elio’s , an upscale Italian restaurant in Manhattan’s Upper East Side.

No matter the trip, play with nature while in Montauk. Of course, relaxing poolside at Daunt’s or the Yacht Club has its time and place—but the town also boasts so many great and unique preserves, hiking trails, and points of access to the ocean. For a first-time Montauk visit, head to the museum and walk up to the top of a Montauk staple, Point Lighthouse (also, the first lighthouse in New York State). Or, catch a great view of the lighthouse from Camp Hero State Park , where the stretch of coastal cliffs embodies the feeling of being at land’s end.
