They will be competing in two round the world races, including the Brest Oceans as the climax at the end of 2023, several transatlantic races , a race around Europe and this autumn, a double-handed 14,000 mile race across the North and South Atlantic. Tip & Shaft analyses what lies behind these events. After the accidents in the Route du Rhum , which led to the postponement of the Lorient-Bermuda Race and the Brest Oceans, the solo round the world race initially scheduled for late 2019, and then t he refusal of the Transat Jacques Vabre to allow the maxi trimarans to compete, the Ultim 32/23 class had to respond. After the problems they encountered during the winter of 2018, they are bouncing back with a new, ambitious 5-year programme . "It took a long time," admitted Patricia Brochard, the class president. The programme was supposed to have been announced two months ago, but it took a while for Banque Populaire to sign up again , and to analyse together the accidents in the Route du Rhum, while consulting towns and partners about the right choice of dates. It would seem that the reaction from Brest was the deciding factor : "They could have forced us to organise the solo round the world race in 2021,” explained Thomas Coville, whose Sodebo Ultim 3 has just sailed for the first time. “But they were exemplary. The legendary race is on the calendar for the Ultims next year, which has annoyed its organiser, OC Sport Pen Duick. Contacted on Thursday, Hervé Favre , CEO told Tip & Shaft: " No agreement has so far been signed . Talks are ongoing, but the Notice of Race won’t be published until the end of May and nothing is certain. It looks like this announcement is an attempt to force us to allow them to race . The same goes for the next Route du Rhum." However, 2022 is still some way off and a lot could happen before then. No round the world race until 2021 … with six boats competing. Until the second half of 2021, the boats will remain in the Atlantic with a short incursion into the Mediterranean for the Round Europe Race, called The Arch , which is being organised by Damien Grimont (who was behind The Bridge). The start of the crewed round the world race at the end of 2021 will also start in the Mediterranean . The town for the start has officially not yet been announced, but everyone knows that the application from ASO and the City of Nice – who organised the Nice UltiMed in 2018 – is likely to be chosen. The timing means that Armel Le Cléac’h’s new Banque Populaire and François Gabart’s new trimaran will therefore be able to compete, so there should be at least six boats for this crewed race, as the former Macif will officially be up for sale this summer and will be available in 2020 after The Transat, and the delivery trip home, which Gabart is to attempt in record mode.

Ultimes threaten Rolex Fastnet Race record destruction Unless there is a flat calm, it is very likely that the outright record will fall in this August's edition of the Royal Ocean Racing Club's premium event, the Rolex Fastnet Race. For leading the charge in the world's biggest offshore yacht race, with a fleet of 300-350 competing, will be the world's fastest offshore boats - the Ultimes. In the last windy Rolex Fastnet Race in 2011, the Loick Peyron-skippered Banque Populaire V blasted around the 608 mile course in 1 day, 8 hours and 48 minutes. But for the mighty 131ft (40m) long trimaran (later re-christened Spindrift 2) her average speed, a mere 18.53 knots, was like she was towing buckets. Two years earlier she had managed the 2880 mile west to east Atlantic crossing, averaging 32.94 knots. Today, while her transatlantic record may remain tough to beat, Banque Populaire V is old technology. Modern day Ultime trimarans at 100ft long may be shorter but, mostly thanks to their new foiling technology, are substantially faster. And this year's Rolex Fastnet Race will feature at least three of them. Francois Gabart: MACIF, all 30 x 21m of her, can fly in around 13 knots of wind but optimum conditions are 15-18 knots - more than this and the sea state becomes too lumpy. In her sweet spot MACIF has already touched 49.4 knots (in the Route du Rhum, singlehanded under autopilot) although he admits this is not the goal. "Our target is to average more than 40 knots." A 40 knots Rolex Fastnet Race would take just over 15 hours! Franck Cammas-Charles Caudrelier co-skipper set-up on board the rebuilt Edmond de Rothschild, following its bow breakage in last autumn's Route du Rhum. The latest Ultime, Thomas Coville's Sodebo Ultim 3. Coville is remarkable for having competing in almost every major sailing event from the America's Cup and Whitbread/Volvo Ocean Race (winning with Groupama 4) to the Mini, IMOCA 60, ORMA 60 and for more than a decade in giant multihulls, on which in 2016 he set a new solo round the world record (later broken by Gabart). www.rolexfastnetrace.com

Revolutionary Gitana 17 trimaran to foil solo across oceans at 50 knots

The most radical of the new Ultime trimarans, the incredible Gitana 17 is designed to foil at over 50 knots and cross up to 900 miles a day, crewed by just one solo skipper. Elaine Bunting talked to designer Guillaume Verdier at the launch

A revolutionary 100ft fully foiling oceangoing trimaran capable of covering more than 900 miles in a day and sailing at speeds of 50 knots was launched in Lorient this week. Designed by Guillaume Verdier, the foil genius behind the America’s Cup winning Emirates Team New Zealand , Gitana 17 is designed to be sailed solo and to beat the round the world record.

Gitana 17 is the latest of the race boats backed by Baron Benjamin de Rothschild. The 100ft ‘Ultime’ trimaran is the culmination of three years of work by the team and brings together developments from areas as diverse as the Vendée Globe IMOCA 60s, the America’s Cup and the MOD70 trimarans.

This is a beast of a boat and significantly different from others in the growing ‘Ultime’ development class such as François Gabart’s Macif  and Thomas Coville’s Sodebo . For the first time, this is a boat designed around foil performance.

According to the design team, Gitana 17 will be able to foil at speeds of 48-50 knots in 16-25 knots of true wind and seas of 6-8m – typical Atlantic conditions. It could also sail across the Southern Ocean in non-foiling mode at up to 40 knots.

“Foiling is not that [hard] but to do that and be stable in waves is a lot more difficult and this is a first stage to doing that,” explained Guillaume Verdier. “Previously the boats were designed to go offshore and slowly the foils got into that, but we have designed the appendages as a principal [part] and tried to have a platform that goes well with that.

“It makes a boat that is a little heavier because there are more systems to control the foil, more hydraulics and the platform is stiffer in torsion.”

Launched on 17 July from Multiplast, Gitana 17 is the new Ultime class built for Baron Edmond de Rothschild.

The foils on Gitana 17 share some common thinking with those on the America’s Cup boats – the outer float foils are an L-shape. The main daggerboard on the central hull, however, is a shape never seen before on these boats and features a large horizontal component to help with roll control.

The concepts were evolved through 2014 and 2015 on Gitana 15 , the MOD70 now known as Giovanni Soldini’s Maserati . The team fitted one hull with several foil shapes to understand their performance offshore. “One of the issues we had was that it was fairly unstable, rolling-wise, and an elevator on the stern [alone] would not be enough for singlehanded control. So we introduced this element, which is draggy but will help a lot,” explained Verdier.

The T-foil rudders on the outer hulls are an ingenious and complex solution and designed by the Gitana team. They feature elevators to adjust trim and are operated by hydraulic system monitored by electronic software. But they can also kick up if they collide with something in the water, and be raised out of the water.

The windward rudder is very exposed to slamming from waves when reaching, so can be lifted up, locked into the hull and disconnected from the control systems. A large housing that you can see in the photo below protects the rudder and controls.

Verdier says that these rudder foils are “a bit like the AC72 foils; they are auto-stable”.

He explained: “They behave a bit like a helicoil. When the boat raises up in the water it makes more leeway, and when it makes more leeway there is a component of the force that pushes you down. But the difference [with the America’s Cup boats] is that this is a huge foil compared to any other boat in the past.”

According to Verdier, Gitana 17 could one day foil at more than 50 knots. “But when foiling we are limited by cavitation, so if wanted to go above that we’d need to have different profiles and aerodynamic aspects, and structure of the boat. It’s a bit of an unknown territory, but maybe we should be able to do 53 or 54 knots.”

The main aim of the designers, however, is to improve the boat’s average high speed potential, and Verdier says that Gitana 17 could reach 900 miles in 24 hours – the much bigger fully crewed 130ft catamaran Banque Populaire V holds the record of 908 miles. This could be an ultimate record-breaker, though the quiet-spoken French designer hesitates to say so. “I could pick any crazy number,” he smiles. “It’s pretentious to say. We have to wait a little.”

Ultim 32/23 Class starts Atlantic loop

Brest, France (November 5, 2019) – The four trimarans of the Ultim 32/23 Class set off today at more than 30 knots of speed, propelled by a north-westerly wind of about thirty knots and in a heavy sea with waves 4.5 metres high, to start the Brest Atlantiques race, an inaugural event taking the maxi multihulls on a 14,000 mile loop in the Atlantic Ocean.

Trimaran Macif (François Gabart / Gwénolé Gahinet) was the first to cross the line, and shifted slightly northwards ahead of the three other competitors: Actual Leader (Yves Le Blevec / Alex Pella), Maxi Edmond de Rothschild (Franck Cammas / Charles Caudrelier), and Sodebo Ultim 3 (Thomas Coville / Jean-Luc Nélias), who were all at the southern end of the 2.5-mile line.

On the first day out at sea, the descent down into the Bay of Biscay was fast, with heavy waves which should gradually die down. They should cross Cape Finisterre, at the north-western tip of Spain, after about ten hours.

Said Gabart before the start, “We have to find the right pace from the start for the boat and for us. During the first few hours, we will always have one of us listening and not far from the helm to try to go fast without forcing the boat.”

The Class is for trimarans with a maximum length of 32 meters and a maximum width of 23 meters.

The race sends these doublehanded speedsters on a course from Brest that will turn at Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) and Cape Town (South Africa) before returning to Brest.

The turning marks will see the boats leave to port the chain of Cagarras Islands, in front of the famous Ipanema beach in the Bay of Rio and Robben Island off the coast of Cape Town, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 18 years.

It is an unprecedented course, lined with several weather traps, especially along The Cape, a route almost never taken in offshore racing.

Each entry will be skippered by four fantastic pairs and accompanied by a media man who is not allowed to take an active role in the performance of the boat. The teams are:

The Ultime Trimaran TRITIUM is a modified Orma 60 Trimaran - extended to 72 feet. Designed by the renowned VPLP Yacht designers and originally built for the legend of offshore ocean racing, Jean Le Cam, the boat was updated by Artemis Racing for testing of AC wing and dagger foils. The boat was modified - with floats lengthened to 72 feet - and cross beams reinforced, for the new loads. TRITIUM competed in the 2013 Transpac, where she was First-to-Finish and had the fastest elapsed time. It remains one of the fastest offshore vessels in the Pacific and is ready for new record attempts. She is exciting, extremely well built and seaworthy.

16 metric tons, 32 meters in length, and 23 meters wide: the Banque Populaire XI is the fruit of 24 months of construction work performed by 150 mostly French and locally based companies.

The construction of this new 16 metric ton, 32m long, 23m wide, and 37m high ‘Ultim’ class racing trimaran to be skippered by Armel Le Cléac’h  required the expertise of 150 companies to ensure its completion in 24 months despite the health crisis!

 A synthesis of high technology and fine craftsmanship, this giant of the seas was recently launched on April 27 in Lorient (Brittany). An epitome of audacity, with its S-shaped foils about twice the size of those fitted to previous generations (an application of advanced research in aerodynamics as used in Formula 1 racing cars), Banque Populaire XI  is the result of a technological, technical, human and logistical feat  that makes it the latest jewel in the crown of the nautical industry and of competitive sailing in general.  

Team Banque Populaire drew on the expertise of no fewer than 150 mostly French and locally based companies for the vessel’s design and construction . As a major player in ocean racing both as sponsor and ship-owner, Banque Populaire used this opportunity to support craftsmen, engineers and architects, true to its DNA as a bank working closely with all types of entrepreneur. This initiative also enables the bank to demonstrate its active involvement in promoting the status of all those contributing to the ‘blue economy,’ a sector embracing all economic activities related to the marine environment.

Another challenge now awaits the team with the first trial runs for Armel Le Cléac’h and his co-skipper Kevin Escoffier in preparation for the start of the Transat Jacques Vabre Normandy Le Havre race in November later this year.   THE BANQUE POPULAIRE XI MAXI TRIMARAN IN FIGURES

Je suis tout novice en voile et j'ai des infos contradictoires en ce qui concerne la vitesse du bateau en fonction de l'allure (dans les mêmes conditions de vent, voiles, ...).

D'après les schémas combinant les vecteurs de vent réel et de vitesse , le près semble être une allure plus rapide que le portant (puisque c'est le vent apparent qui agit sur les voiles). De même, les bateaux qui vont plus vite que le vent réel ne le font pas au portant... Mais j'entends dire et je lis parfois que le portant est plus rapide (notamment sur ce forum www.hisse-et-oh.com[...]oiliers ).

Qu'est-ce que je loupe ?? (Évidemment sous spi j'imagine bien que ça change tout)

Au portant, il me semble que tu ne pourras jamais aller plus vite que le vent. Quand je regarde les performances des grands navigateurs, qui naviguent à 35 nds avec 27nds de vent réel, c'est souvent au bon plein. Mais il y a sur le forum une multitude de spécialistes qui ne manqueront pas de t'expliquer ça bien mieux que moi

si, au portant (le portant commence au-delà du travers par rapport au vent réel) un voilier peut aller plus vite que le vent mais son vent apparent sera nettement sur l'avant. mais plus il se rapproche du vent arrière plus il va ralentir car son vent apparent va faiblir. C'est pour cela que les bateaux rapides tirent des bords pour descendre le vent

Oui. Merci pour ta précision. En fait j'ai assimilé portant et vent arrière. J'avais lu un article qui traitait des forces exercées sur une voile, et qui concluait que la vitesse max était obtenue à 45' de vent reel. :reflechi: est ce vrai?

A 45° du vent réel, sur un monocoque de croisière, tu navigues au près serré. Le vent apparent est de l'ordre de 30° à 35°. Tu es donc loin de la vitesse maxi qui ne s'obtient qu'au delà de 90° du vent réel. Voir les polaires...

Polaires de vitesses?

Il y a des réponses généralistes et, si on affine, des données liées à chaque type de bateau. Ce n'est jamais le près serré l'allure la plus rapide, en dépit d'un vent apparent plus important. Tu pourras te faire une bonne idée en allant glaner sur le net les polaires de quelques types de bateaux. Ces polaires sont évidemment très différentes entre un trimaran ultime, un monocoque 60' Imoca, un 35' de course croisière ou un Biloup... Au delà de 10 kn de vent, l'allure la plus rapide se situe souvent entre 110° et 140° du vent (grand largue), l'envoi du spi venant booster les belles abaques des polaires. En PJ un exemple de polaires pour le First 31.7

Pour la vitesse du vent apparent (celui qui nous sert à avancer) comparé au vent réel, des souvenirs du lycée devraient permettre de faire les schémas des sommes vectorielles. Facile alors de voir qu'un vent portant devient beaucoup plus près de l'axe du bateau et que le bateau créé son "propre vent" qui l'amène à des vitesses affolantes (voir le record du monde de vitesse en char à voile, > 200km/h)

C'est que je n'ai rien compris aux vecteurs alors...

De ce que j'ai compris, au portant le vent réel et le vent de vitesse sont opposés et donc le vent apparent est moindre qu'au travers ou au bon plein... Pour les mêmes conditions de vent, bateau, voiles,...

Et du coup, les bateaux qui vont à 1,5x la'vitesse du vent ne le font pas au portant...

Le portant n'est pas que le vent arrière. Le portant commence après le vent de travers jusqu'au vent arrière.

Si j'ai bien compris, le VR et le VV ne sont pas opposés. Le vv est dans l'axe du bateau et le vr forme un angle variable avec le vv. Le vent apparent est la construction vectorielle de ces 2 vents. Le vv et le vr ne sont opposés qu'au vent arrière. J'ai juste ?

Ne serais-tu pas en train confuser grave l'allure et le réglage des voiles.

L'allure est effectivement observée par rapport au vent réel. C'est théorique, administratif, conventionnel.

En revanche, tu règles les voiles en fonction du vent apparent.

Il n'y a aucune relation absolue entre l'allure et le réglage des voiles

Un navire suffisamment rapide dont la vitesse serait identique à celle du vent pourrait conserver le même réglage de voile du bon plein au largue en ne faisant varier que sa vitesse.

C'est parce que, généralement, la vitesse d'un navire de plaisance est faible au regard de celle du vent qu'on peut passer à côté mais, sur un tri par exemple, ça commence à devenir clairement sensible.

Effectivement une petite confusion sur le portant et vent arrière, je parlais bien du vent arrière.

Par contre, aucune confusion entre allure et réglage des voiles... Ma question portait juste une la vitesse effective du bateau au près et au vent arrière en supposant que le réglage est optimisé pour avoir la vitesse la plus élevée.

Et donc d'après vos réponses et quelques lectures, est ce que je me trompe en disant très schématiquement que c'est au travers que l'on peut atteindre la plus grande vitesse mais que ça dépend quand même de chaque bateau (cf les polaires). Mais bon il a tellement de paramètres, par gros temps par exemple, avec les vagues de travers ça doit tout changer, etc, ...

Grant Dalton’s round the world race winner Club Med has been relaunched as the ultimate global ‘fast cruiser’ Ocean Pearl. You might not wish to push it all the way to 40 knots… but you can!

The legendary maxi-catamaran, the première raceboat of her generation, has had its claws trimmed to reveal a fascinating fast cruising proposition, marketed through Bernard Gallay Yachtbrokers.

Ocean Pearl, as the boat is now known, was launched in 1999 as Club Med . An ultra-high-performance maxi-catamaran,it was among the largest and fastest multihull racing yachts in the world.

This 110-foot (33.5-metre) flying machine was designed by Gilles Ollier and custom-built by the renowned Multiplast yard in Vannes, France for legendary New Zealand yachtsman Grant Dalton to take on The Race, a gruelling non-stop, round-the-world challenge for giant multihulls.

Built entirely from carbon Nomex sandwich for lightness and strength, the design and construction took advantage of the latest high-tech materials and build techniques.

Its huge scale – including a vast, towering sail plan flown from a rotating 39.5-metre mast and boom and a carbon bowsprit – ensured that from the very earliest sea trials the boat’s performance was nothing short of breathtaking.

The boat’s huge scale and oceangoing pace made it the talk the sailing world in the run up to The Race and when the fleet left Barcelona, Spain on the first day of the new Millenium, Dalton’s men quickly established an unassailable lead.

Club Med stormed around the planet in record time, completing the 27,000-mile course past the world’s three great southern capes in just over 62 days – nine days inside the previous benchmark time. Along the way Dalton’s crew raised the 24-hour distance bar to 655.2 miles, averaging a remarkable 27 knots.

Dalton attributed the victory largely to the capabilities of his groundbreaking boat, which enabled the team to negotiate large-scale weather systems like the South Atlantic St Helena High with relative ease.‘This boat was the first of its kind, able to cover more than 600 miles day after day,’ he said. ‘It was a marvel and I was privileged to be on board.’

A year later, re-christened Maiden II for British skipper Tracy Edwards, the maxi-cat was back in record-breaking form once again, regaining its 24-hour distance record with a run of 697 miles in the North Atlantic off Newport, Rhode Island at an average speed of 29 knots. Edwards’ crew of 10 pushed the boat to a new top speed – a remarkable 44-knot peak– on the way to their new record.

‘The fact that we hit over 40 knots testifies to how hard we were pushing, the conditions and the boat’s performance capabilities,’ said helmsman Paul Larsen at the time.

After undergoing a comprehensive refit in 2015, this extraordinary boat has been reborn as Ocean Pearl and has a new life as a fast, comfortable and safe blue water cruiser.

On deck, the powerful Lewmar winch package has been upgraded to hydraulic power. Along with other modifications to the deck layout, this means the boat can be easily sailed by as few as three people.

Included in the refit was all-new Southern Spars/Future Fibres standing rigging, Blew Stoub Dynema running rigging, Facnor roller-furlers for the Solent, staysail and gennaker headsails, as well as a complete overhaul of the boat’s two Volvo Penta 105 horsepower engines.

Down below, the original stark racing interior has been upgraded with light, comfortable, high-quality accommodation more conducive to luxury blue-water cruising.

To minimise any ill effects to the boat’s performance, a close eye was kept on the weight added during the installation of the new inside layout, with only a two-ton increase overall.

The air-conditioned owner and guest accommodation in the port hull comprises two double cabins and one triple, two toilets and two showers, and a six-person saloon, while the crew accommodation in the starboard hull includes two double cabins and one single, one toilet and shower, and a full-specification galley with watermaker, two refrigerators and a deep freeze.

The professionally equipped navigation station in the starboard hull features all-B&G instrumentation and a navigation computer.

Notably, despite her imposing size, with a draught of less than a metre this boat has the potential to access anchorages that conventional deepkeel blue water cruisers simply can’t.

Lightly used since the completion of the refit, Ocean Pearl is available immediately for an adventurous owner looking to combine the excitement and exhilaration of a pedigree high-performance racer with the comfort and status of a well-appointed maxi-cruiser.

Those yearning to see the world by sea can do so on their own terms and without taking an age to do it.

After a very similar refit to Ocean Pearl’s almost identical sister ship, Swift – the former Orange and Kingfisher 2 – the owner set off on a whistle-stop lap of the planet taking in some of the world’s most beautiful and remote locations and completing the circuit in just 10 months.

Reviewed: Lagoon Sixty 7 Powercat

Oftentimes, powercats end up looking like wedding cakes. They start wide at the base and narrow with each successive level. Making them look good is a real challenge.

All credit, then, to Lagoon’s regular preferred creative partners, automotive-design legend Patrick Le Quément and VPLP, which respectively take the bows for exterior design and naval architecture on the Lagoon Sixty 7. It’s a catamaran that manages to unite elegance and functionality.

The Sixty 7 and its sailing sistership, the Sixty 5, replace the outgoing Lagoon 630 Motor Yacht and Lagoon 620. Around 80 of the 630s were built from 2012 through this past January, and around 170 of the 620s were delivered in the 10 years since its 2009 debut.

Usable space is the key evolution from old models to new. Lagoon says the new-generation cat designs deliver around 30 percent more floor area inside and outside. The flybridge alone adds about 40 square feet or so of alfresco lounge space below a hardtop with a sunroof. But check out the foredeck: A seating area connects to the salon via a 12-millimeter-thick glass door, making the forward end of the yacht an integral part of the living area.

A two-person sofa is just outside the salon door, and up three steps is an open deck for movable furniture, beanbag chairs and the like. Lagoon has an exclusive range of stand-alone items from the Belgian outdoor-furniture company Tribù, which is responsible for most of the other furniture aboard. And if music’s your thing, then make sure to tick the box for the optional Waterfall Audio sound system; the clarity is unbelievable.

Given the yacht’s volume, the Sixty 7 is surprisingly nimble in turns, and the driving ergonomics couldn’t be much better at the main console in the salon or up on the flybridge. The displays are all from Simrad. A leaning post is standard at the lower helm, and a seat is optional.

The biggest difference between the power and sail versions of this yacht are the diesels and fuel tanks. The sail version has twin 150 hp Volvo Penta D3s. The powercat has more than twice the oomph: either twin 340 hp Volvo Penta D6s or twin 440 hp Yanmar 6LYs. Cat buyers—whether opting for rigs or no rigs—mostly choose the most powerful engine option.

With the Yanmar diesels, 32 percent fuel, 40 percent water and nine people aboard, the Sixty 7 we ran in the Mediterranean topped 21 knots flat out, which means 3,350 rpm and a total fuel burn of almost 48 gph, or 30 hours’ worth of run time. Acceleration from rest to top speed took around 35 seconds. Not bad numbers for something moving through the water with space comparable to a $5 million, 3,000-square-foot Manhattan apartment.

Slow the yacht to a constant 2,000 rpm and 12 knots, and allowing for a 10 percent reserve, owners can plan on 1,200 nautical miles between fuel pumps. Speed up to a 14-knot fast cruise, and that range gets cut in half. Fuel capacity on the powercat version is 1,452 gallons across four tanks, two in each hull.

Generated from a three-piece mold tool, the Sixty 7′s hulls are slightly longer and flatter aft than those on the sail version because the extra weight of engines and fuel adds approximately 18,300 pounds to the yacht’s displacement. The Sixty 7 powercat draws less too: just 3 feet, 10 inches.

Nauta Design handled interiors. Three principal veneer choices are available: walnut, light oak and gray oak. Accommodations options are modular. Combinations from four to six staterooms are possible, although one sleeping space would normally be specified for crew.

Lagoon Sixty 7

The Lagoon Sixty 7 I got aboard had four double-berth staterooms, including a master in the after half of the starboard hull with a sofa, separate shower and head stalls, and a private entrance aft. The galley and crew mess were in the after half of the port hull. There’s also the option of a galley at main-deck level, but the first four Sixty 7s were sold with the galley down; the fifth will get the galley-up layout.

The Lagoon Sixty 7 has visual appeal, the volume of a house, and the range to cruise the Eastern Seaboard almost nonstop with accommodations for a large cruising family. Sometimes, you can have your cake and eat it too.

Launch of the new Maxi Trimaran Banque Populaire XI: the Ultim class epitome of audacity!

16 metric tons, 32 meters in length, and 23 meters wide: the Banque Populaire XI is the fruit of 24 months of construction work performed by 150 mostly French and locally based companies.

The construction of this new 16 metric ton, 32m long, 23m wide, and 37m high ‘Ultim’ class racing trimaran to be skippered by Armel Le Cléac’h  required the expertise of 150 companies to ensure its completion in 24 months despite the health crisis!

 A synthesis of high technology and fine craftsmanship, this giant of the seas was recently launched on April 27 in Lorient (Brittany). An epitome of audacity, with its S-shaped foils about twice the size of those fitted to previous generations (an application of advanced research in aerodynamics as used in Formula 1 racing cars), Banque Populaire XI  is the result of a technological, technical, human and logistical feat  that makes it the latest jewel in the crown of the nautical industry and of competitive sailing in general.  

Team Banque Populaire drew on the expertise of no fewer than 150 mostly French and locally based companies for the vessel’s design and construction . As a major player in ocean racing both as sponsor and ship-owner, Banque Populaire used this opportunity to support craftsmen, engineers and architects, true to its DNA as a bank working closely with all types of entrepreneur. This initiative also enables the bank to demonstrate its active involvement in promoting the status of all those contributing to the ‘blue economy,’ a sector embracing all economic activities related to the marine environment.

Another challenge now awaits the team with the first trial runs for Armel Le Cléac’h and his co-skipper Kevin Escoffier in preparation for the start of the Transat Jacques Vabre Normandy Le Havre race in November later this year.   THE BANQUE POPULAIRE XI MAXI TRIMARAN IN FIGURES

The Maxi Catamaran

This catamaran is unique in France, by its design, the double decks that link comfort, technology, security and performance. This new 2010 concept will allow you to discover the pleasure of the navigation with the best conditions. It was built in composite materials in the Martinez naval yard (Saint Cyprien) and was drawn by the Mauric engineering office in Marseille. It was rigged by Vega Voile sail maker (in Le Grau du Roi). The capacity is 97 passengers.

This new concept for this catamaran was born in May 2010. This boat offers the last Furino Navnet 3D navigation system, a panoramic bar, multitude of 220v plugs, ways and waters easily reachable for handicapped persons, shower, internet access, MP3 DVD reader and flat screen.

The Maxi-Trimaran

A boat that has proved herself.

The former Groupama 3 and Banque Populaire VII, the IDEC SPORT maxi-trimaran has had an exceptional list of successes. Winner of the Jules Verne Trophy in 2010 and 2012, and again in 2017, the boat also won the last three editions of the Route du Rhum – and many other events. Thirteen years after she was first launched, this strong all-round performer can look forward to a bright future in the expert hands of Francis Joyon.

It was in December 2004 that Groupama announced the construction of a giant trimaran to attempt to smash the major ocean records leading up to the legendary Jules Verne Trophy. At a time when the arms race was on in the sailing world, Groupama wanted to come up with a reasonably sized boat, the smallest trimaran capable of beating Orange II. Franck Cammas and his team opted for a length of 31.50 metres (105 feet) designed by the architects, Marc Van Peteghem and Vincent Lauriot-Prévost.

Work began on Groupama 3 in 2005 at the Multiplast yard in Vannes. After almost 130,000 man hours, the boat was launched on 7th June 2006. “ We decided to design a medium power trimaran,” stressed Cammas when presenting his project. ” Groupama 3 is light, but long enough to be safe in the Southern Ocean. The power comes from her width, while her light weight is down to optimising her structure, rationalising the equipment and paying attention to how she was built.” Groupama 3 innovated with her concept inspired by the 60-foot ORMA trimarans (like Groupama 2) ratehr than the more recent giants, which were heavier and designed to face the Southern Ocean. While Orange II (36.80 metres) was amazing in heavy seas, she found it tougher in lighter conditions and moderate winds. Groupama 3 was a strong all-rounder and could sail almost as quickly in strong winds, while remaining at ease in lighter weather. There was another new feature: Groupama 3 was the very first big multihull to set off around the world with foils, a concept only used until then on the Orma boats in the Atlantic.

The boat which has won the Route du Rhum three times

In 2010, Franck Cammas took up a challenge which many people thought impossible, or at best very complicated: he wanted to win the Route du Rhum, sailing alone on his 31.5m maxi trimaran which was equipped with a shorter rig and with a more suitable deck layout. Cammas’s performance was amazing: after nine days 3 hrs 14 mins 47 seconds, he finished first in Pointe-à-Pitre ahead of Francis Joyon and Thomas Coville.

The boat was then sold and became Banque Populaire VII. Relaunched on 15th April 2013 in Lorient, the boat achieved more successes in the hands of Armel Le Cléac’h, who smashed several solo records aboard her: the Mediterranean record, Columbus Route and 24-Hour record (682 miles). After injuring his hand, Armel Le Cléac’h was forced to stand down for the Route du Rhum and was replaced at the last moment by Loïck Peyron at the helm of the maxi trimaran, which had won the previous edition of the prestigious transatlantic race. After a fantastic race, Peyron won the tenth edition of the Route du Rhum with a time of 7 days, 15 hrs 8 minutes and 32 seconds.

How to write a good cover letter (with examples)

The best letters are unique, tailored to the job description, and written in your voice — but that doesn’t mean you can’t use a job cover letter template.

Great cover letters contain the same basic elements and flow a certain way. Take a look at this cover letter structure for ref erence while you construct your own.

1. Add a header and contact information

While reading your cover letter, the recruiter shouldn’t have to look far to find who wrote it. Your document should include a basic heading with the following information:

  • Pronouns (optional)
  • Location (optional)
  • Email address
  • Phone number (optional)
  • Relevant links, such as your LinkedIn profile , portfolio, or personal website (optional)

You can pull this information directly from your CV. Put it together, and it will look something like this:

2. Include a personal greeting

Avoid generic openings like “To whom it may concern,” “Dear sir or madam,” or “Dear hiring manager.” These introductions sound impersonal — like you’re copy-pasting cover letters — and can work against you in the hiring process.

Be careful, though. When using someone’s name, you don’t want to use the wrong title or accidentally misgender someone. If in doubt, using only their name is enough. You could also opt for a gender-neutral title, like Mx.

Make sure you’re addressing the right person in your letter — ideally, the person who’s making the final hiring decision. This isn’t always specified in the job posting, so you may have to do some research to learn the name of the hiring manager.

3. Draw them in with an opening story

The opening paragraph of your cover letter should hook the reader. You want it to be memorable, conversational, and extremely relevant to the job you’re pursuing. 

There’s no need for a personal introduction — you’ve already included your name in the heading. But you should make reference to the job you’re applying for. A simple “Thank you for considering my application for the role of [job title] at [company],” will suffice.

Then you can get into the “Why” of your job application. Drive home what makes this specific job and this company so appealing to you. Perhaps you’re a fan of their products, you’re passionate about their mission, or you love their brand voice. Whatever the case, this section is where you share your enthusiasm for the role.

Here’s an example opening paragraph. In this scenario, you’re applying for a digital marketing role at a bicycle company:

“Dear Mr. John Doe,

Thank you for considering my application for the role of Marketing Coordinator at Bits n’ Bikes.

My parents bought my first bike at one of your stores. I’ll never forget the freedom I felt when I learned to ride it. My father removed my training wheels, and my mom sent me barrelling down the street. You provide joy to families across the country — and I want to be part of that.”

Search for details that match your experience and interests. For example, if you’re excited about a fast-paced job in public relations, you might look for these elements in a posting:

  • They want someone who can write social media posts and blog content on tight deadlines
  • They value collaboration and input from every team member
  • They need a planner who can come up with strong PR strategies

Highlight how you fulfill these requirements:

But let’s say you’re applying for a position as a server . In that case, you’d be looking for the “restaurant manager” or “food and beverage manager.”

If the results don’t come up with anything, try checking out the “Team” page on the company website; there’s a good chance you’ll at least find the right person there.

Make sure to address them as Mr. or Ms., followed by their last name. If you’re not sure about their gender or marital status, you can just stick to their full name, like so:

Hiring managers get hundreds, sometimes even thousands, of applications. Chances are, they’re not going to be reading every single cover letter end-to-end.

So, it’s essential to catch their attention from the very first paragraph.

The biggest problem with most opening paragraphs is that they’re usually extremely generic. Here’s an example:

  • My name is Jonathan, and I’d like to work as a Sales Manager at XYZ Inc. I’ve worked as a Sales Manager at MadeUpCompany Inc. for 5+ years, so I believe that I’d be a good fit for the position.

See the issue here? This opening paragraph doesn’t say anything except the fact that you’ve worked the job before.

And do you know who else has similar work experience? All the other applicants you’re competing with.

Instead, you want to start with some of your top achievements to grab the reader’s attention. And to get the point across, the achievements should be as relevant as possible to the position.

Your opening paragraph should also show the hiring manager a bit about why you want this specific job. For example, mention how the job relates to your plans for the future or how it can help you grow professionally. This will show the hiring manager that you’re not just applying left and right—you’re actually enthusiastic about getting this particular role.

Now, let’s make our previous example shine:

Dear Mr. Smith,

My name’s Michael, and I’d like to help XYZ Inc. hit and exceed its sales goals as a Sales Manager. I’ve worked as a Sales Representative with Company X, another fin-tech company , for 3+ years, where I generated an average of $30,000+ in sales per month and beat the KPIs by around 40%. I believe that my previous industry experience, passion for finance , and excellence in sales make me the right candidate for the job.

The second candidate starts with what they can do for the company in the future and immediately lists an impressive and relevant achievement. Since they’re experienced in the same industry and interested in finance, the hiring manager can see they’re not just a random applicant.

From this introduction, it’s safe to say that the hiring manager would read the rest of this candidate’s cover letter.

#5. Use the Cover Letter Body for Details

The next part of your cover letter is where you can go into detail about what sets you apart as a qualified candidate for the job.

The main thing you need to remember here is that you shouldn’t make it all about yourself . Your cover letter is supposed to show the hiring manager how you relate to the job and the company you’re applying to.

No matter how cool you make yourself sound in your cover letter, if you don’t tailor it to match what the hiring manager is looking for, you’re not getting an interview.

To get this right, use the job ad as a reference when writing your cover letter. Make sure to highlight skills and achievements that match the job requirements, and you’re good to go.

Since this part of your cover letter is by far the longest, you should split it into at least two paragraphs.

Here’s what each paragraph should cover:

Explain Why You’re the Perfect Candidate for the Role

Before you can show the hiring manager that you’re exactly what they’ve been looking for, you need to know what it is they’re looking for.

Start by doing a bit of research. Learn what the most important skills and responsibilities of the role are according to the job ad, and focus on any relevant experience you have that matches them.

As the sole digital marketer at the company, I managed the ad creation and management process end-to-end. I created the ad copy and images, picked the targeting, ran optimization trials, and so on.

Chances are, you’ll find all the information you need either on the company website or on job-search websites like Jobscan or Glassdoor.

Then, pick your favorite thing about the company and talk about it in your cover letter.

But don’t just describe the company in its own words just to flatter them. Be super specific—the hiring manager can see through any fluff.

For example, if you’re passionate about their product and you like the company’s culture of innovation and independent work model, you can write something like:

So, make sure to do your fair share of research and come up with good reasons why you're applying to that specific company.

#6. Wrap It Up and Sign It

Finally, it’s time to conclude your cover letter.

In the final paragraph, you want to:

  • Wrap up any points you couldn't make in the previous paragraphs. Do you have anything left to say? If there’s any other information that could help the hiring manager make their decision, mention it here. If not, just recap your key selling points so far, such as key skills and expertise.
  • Express gratitude. Politely thanking the hiring manager for their time is always a good idea.
  • Finish the cover letter with a call to action. The very last sentence in your cover letter should be a call to action. This means you should ask the hiring manager to do something, like call you and discuss your application or arrange an interview.
  • Remember to sign your cover letter. Just add a formal closing line and sign your name at the bottom.
