Wild Oats XI | Striving To Achieve Excellence

  • Meet the Team

The supermaxi yacht Wild Oats XI, owned by the  Oatley family , is one of the fastest and most technologically advanced ocean racing yachts in the world. Her record in Australia¹s international offshore classic, the Rolex Sydney Hobart Race, is unrivalled.

The sleek, 30-metre (100ft) long ocean racing thoroughbred is undisputedly the most successful yacht in the event’s 76-year history. Helmsman Mark Richards is recognised as the race¹s most successful skipper.

Wild Oats XI¹s success went further in 2020 Hobart race

Wild Oats XI was launched only a matter of days before her first Rolex Sydney Hobart race in 2005, yet she proved so fast that the supermaxi blasted its way to a rare triple crown – line honours, a race record time and overall handicap victory. The time for the 628 nautical mile course was 1 day, 18 hours, 40 minutes, and 10 seconds.

This was pioneered successfully in 2013 and proved once again to give the yacht an advantage over the fleet.

Wild Oats XI has rewritten the Rolex Sydney Hobart record books many times. Apart from being first to finish on nine occasions, the Oatley family’s pride and joy was the first yacht ever to take four back-to-back line honour victories.

In 2009, after being lengthened to 100ft, the supermaxi surrendered its line honours crown to the almost identical Alfa Romeo but returned to its winning ways the following year.

In the 2012 Rolex Sydney Hobart, Wild Oats XI again took the triple-crown of line and handicap honours and a race record time.

In 2015 the stern was shortened by 2m and 12m forward sections were replaced by a 14m longer, sleeker bow, keeping the midship sections unmodified and in effect moving the entire sail plan aft by 2m.

The boat faced challenges between 2015-2017 but made a comeback in 2018 when Wild Oats XI won its ninth line honours in the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, with a time of 1 day, 19 hours, 7 minutes and 21 seconds. This win made Wild Oats XI the most successful yacht in the race’s history with Mark Richards holding the title of the skipper with the most line honours victories.

The Sydney Hobart Yacht Race Has a Boat-Size Absence

Wild Oats XI, a crowd favorite that is one of the most successful yachts in the event’s history, will not compete this year pending repairs and rethinking.

A white yacht racing on blue water has black sails and the name Wild Oats on it in red. A dolphin leaps out of its way.

When the hundred-foot Maxi yachts hit the starting line for the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, one absence will loom as a powerful presence.

There will be no Wild Oats XI, and Wild Oats XI is more than a boat.

Speculation is inevitable when a crowd favorite is missing. The report from the boat’s skipper, Mark Richards, is straightforward, but it won’t put an end to wondering. Of the boat and its owners, Richards said: “We had a structural failure in the bow and are having that addressed. The Oatley family are re-evaluating how to progress forward in our sport and they have just decided to have a break this year while they work it out.”

That resonates because in this race, Wild Oats XI has taken line honors (first boat to cross the finish line) nine times, set records three times and, beyond that, won the hearts of Australians.

“Kids 6, 7, 8 years old know the name,” Richards said.

No one dares use the past tense in speaking of Wild Oats XI, but questions arise when a boat that is synonymous with the Sydney Hobart, and that has been rush-repaired in the past to make a race, is absent.

Last year, the boat finished fourth at the Sydney Hobart after a sail ripped underway. It was in August of this year during a race in Australia’s Whitsunday Islands that the hull failure occurred.

In 2005, Bob Oatley commissioned the build of Wild Oats XI and set the standard — the boat swept all honors in its first Sydney Hobart race, only two weeks after launch. The boat would win line honors seven more times before Oatley’s death in 2016. His son Sandy, also passionate about sailing, carried on.

“I’d love to get one more crack,” Richards said. “I guess we’ll know more next year.”

Steve Quigley got his first crack as a crewman in 2012 and felt “daunted” joining the famously accomplished crew. Then, “We were first over the finish line, we set another course record, and we won our division on handicap,” he said. “I should have retired from racing then and there, but it wasn’t until I went walking around Hobart in my team shirt, with strangers asking for autographs, that I understood that Wild Oats XI had become the people’s boat.”

What next? Richards said, “The boat is still very capable.”

Quigley, a naval architect, was part of a team responsible for a bold 2015 redesign that bought the boat some time. In Quigley’s recollection, “I was the one in the meeting who had to tell Bob, ‘You may have the fastest Maxi in the world, but if you want to keep it that way, let’s chop it in half,’” he said.

Then they chopped it twice.

To respect the 100-foot maximum limit for the Sydney Hobart race, length was removed from the stern and added in a new bow section that accommodated bigger sails. Wild Oats XI.2 proved effective across the wind range, and success continued as the boat won line honors again in 2018.

Imagining a 2024 race, Quigley said, “Given the right combination of wind strength and direction, we could find a window to win, but the newer boats have a wider window.”

Design DNA in 2023 is different from 2005. Boats are now wider, yielding stability to carry taller masts and more sail. The maximum width of Wild Oats XI, 17 feet, is 45 percent less than LawConnect, winner of the most recent lead-up regatta series and yet not the newest or widest.

Sandy Oatley did not respond to a request for comment. More than one member of his crew spoke of the team as a “family,” so any decision is charged with emotion: Do you throw money at an unlikely Wild Oats XI.3, or would it satisfy if the boat slipped into the role of sentimental favorite and long shot?

The citizens of Hobart cheer for all, but it doesn’t hurt to arrive on Wild Oats XI. Andrew Henderson, part of the crew since 2005 and a 25-race veteran, said: “Anyone who can get a boat to Hobart deserves respect. The town offers the warmest reception in Australia. All of us understand how special that is.”

This year, however, after many years racing, he said, “I’m spending Christmas with the kids.”

Brett Eagle purchased Wild Rose in 2020 and reverted to her original name Wild Oats . The late Roger Hickman, crewed by male and female amateurs, won the 2014 Rolex Sydney Hobart with her as Wild Rose  and scored wins in the Australian and NSW IRC Championships, among many great victories with this famous yacht, including taking Division 4 of the Rolex Sydney Hobart in 2011, 2012, 2013.

‘Hicko’, with Bruce Foye and Lance Peckman, also won the 1993 race (IOR) with the boat, alongside IMS winner, Cuckoos Nest. Her last Rolex Sydney Hobart was 2015, when Hickman skippered her to sixth overall and third in Division 4. New owner, Eagle, raced on Ted Tooher’s Chancellor for three years as second in charge and navigator prior to buying this boat. He has given Wild Oats a new paint job, with the rose remaining between the two words of her name. Eagle and crew are in still in the early days of learning this beautifully set up boat.

Major Modifications Planned for Wild Oats XI

  • By Courtesy of Wild Oats XI
  • Updated: August 4, 2015

The recent Transpac Race from Los Angeles to Honolulu was the last for record-breaking Australian supermaxi, Wild Oats XI , as we know her. She will never look the same again.

The 30.5 metre long sloop, recognised as the most successful yacht to have contested the Rolex Sydney Hobart Race over its 70-year history, is on her way to an appointment with a team of boat builders who will transform her into something different and new.

Their first task will be to cut two metres from her stern, then extend her forward sections by the same length. There will also be changes made to the hull configuration, sailplan and rig.

The project will take three months to complete.

“ Wild Oats XI ‘s profile will be considerably different when we have finished,” said Sandy Oatley, who is coordinating the project for his father, the yacht’s owner, Bob Oatley. “She is now ten years old and in need of a new lease of life, especially if we are going to have any chance of beating the four other 100-footers we expect to see on the start line for the Hobart race in December, including the American yachts, Comanche and Rambler .”

Wild Oats XI is currently sailing 4300 nautical miles back to Sydney from Hawaii after scoring the fastest elapsed time in the Transpac Race from Los Angeles to Honolulu and winning her division. She is due to arrive in about two weeks and will then be taken from the water almost immediately so the work can begin.

“Wild Oats XI’s result in the Transpac race was a fitting finale for the old girl as we know her,” said her skipper, Mark Richards. “It’s time she had a makeover – a big one. “It’s a truly exciting project, one that reflects the competitive nature of Bob and Sandy Oatley. They want to give her every chance for taking her ninth line honours in the Hobart race.”

“This is a massive undertaking for everyone involved, one we have to do to stay competitive. Our goal is to take a decade-old, proven, all-round yacht and make her leaner, lighter and faster.

“Lopping off the stern is relatively simple,” Richards explained, “but the extension to the bow is far more complex. To retain the right hull shape we will be cutting off the existing bow section just forward of the mast and rebuilding her from there.”

Richards said that he, the Oatleys and the design team had been considering modifying Wild Oats XI for more than two years, but it is only now that they could agree on what needed to be done. He added that everyone was confident the modifications will make the yacht considerably faster.

This first stage of the project will happen in a shed at Woolwich, on Sydney harbour, where Wild Oats XI docks. The mid-section will then be trucked to the McConaghys boatbuilding facility at Mona Vale, on Sydney’s northern beaches. McConaghys built Wild Oats XI there in 2005 and have, in recent weeks, prefabricated the yacht’s new bow and stern sections on site.

The plan for the modifications means that the position of the yacht’s mast, keel, rudder, daggerboards, hydrofoil wing and basic sailplan will remain unchanged as they are an integral part of the remaining internal hull chassis. However, the new look Wild Oats XI will also feature a longer bowsprit, a change that will allow for larger downwind and light-wind sails to be set. The strength of this new structure will also allow for the load tension on the outer forestay to be increased from seven to 12 tons.

“There are many other things that will change as a consequence of these modifications,” Richards said. “We have three new sails on order, and because the hull will now be lighter we will be able to increase stability by adding 400 kilograms to our keel ballast bulb.”

Not so apparent will be a change in profile for the existing daggerboards and horizontal hydrofoil wing fitted at the waterline, aft of the mast.

This wing, which was installed more than a year ago, made a considerable difference to Wild Oats XI ‘s downwind speed as it significantly reduced the effect of nose diving. Design research on the new-look hull confirms that the combined influences of the increased buoyancy that will come via the longer bow section, and increased lift from the wing, will make Wild Oats XI even faster downwind.

The new-look Wild Oats XI is scheduled to be sailing again in November.

Wild Oats XI – how mods can keep a nine-year-old racer up to speed

Two themes recurred consistently in interviews with the skippers of the five super-maxis that raced the 2014 Rolex Sydney Hobart: good management and the right people. In both regards the core of the Wild Oats XI team has remained remarkably consistent over the decade since she was launched and the contribution that made to her record-breaking eighth win in 2014 should not be underestimated.

Apart from her crew of highly experienced and professional crew, who have raced aboard her for many years, Wild Oats is notable for the number of tweaks and reconfigurations she has had. A year earlier she had made the news after being nicknamed the Swiss Army Knife, following the addition of multiple foils. This year the mods were fewer, but no less significant. But the fact remains that for a nine-year-old boat to beat the brand new, no-holds-barred, master blaster Comanche was no mean feat.

But no amount of experience and expertise can make good a shortfall in boat speed. So what have been the major modifications necessary to keep Wild Oats XI on the pace?

Refinements have kept Wild Oats up to speed. Photo: Daniel Forster/Rolex

Refinements have kept Wild Oats up to speed. Photo: Daniel Forster/Rolex

Regular crewmember naval architect Steve Quigley cites five changes that have contributed most to Wild Oats XI ’s winning ways over her nine-year lifespan.

The first was the removal of the forward rudder and the installation of the daggerboards, which made the boat more efficient downwind, but just as importantly improved lateral lift and VMG upwind. The daggerboards came with their own issues, however, the most problematic of which was the substantial shift in the centre of lateral resistance (CLR) which didn’t necessarily match the centre of effort (COE) under different sail configurations.

Small variations could be expected, but when changing from a jib to a Code 0 the COE on Wild Oats XI was moving forward by metres, producing lee helm in light airs.

To resolve this issue a forward centreboard was added – the second major modification – supplementing the twin daggerboards and stabilising the balance of the boat in the low wind ranges up to the point where boat speed matches wind speed, where the daggerboards take over again

The third refinement was the addition of a lateral foil (not a DSS, they say). Off the breeze in a seaway and strong winds Wild Oats XI had a tendency to bury the bow. The lateral foil provides lift and reduces that tendency, resulting in a more even downwind speed profile. A longer lateral foil was recently tested and shows further promise.

The fourth refinement was a new mast, 250kg lighter than its predecessor and substantially stiffer, with significant improvements in upwind speeds, especially in lighter airs. The stiffer mast gave the sail trimmers more options.

The final modification was the reshaping of the bow and rebuild of the bowsprit. The whole bow section was refaired to a narrower profile up to two metres abaft the stem and the bowsprit constructed to a more aerodynamic shape – the bobstay stem fitting was also lifted 500mm.

The result had additional benefits beyond streamlining. “The bow team . . . couldn’t believe how dry the boat now was,” says skipper Mark Richards.

As Wild Oats XI berthed in Hobart having achieved a record eight line honours wins in ten years, her owner Bob Oatley vowed to bring his boat back again next year. It is hard to know what further modifications can be effected. When quizzed on the subject after the race, helmsman Stuart Bannatyne smiled wryly, but was giving little away: “We’ve still got a few tricks up our sleeves!”

Wild Oats XI

BOW The refairing of the bow section, remodelling of the bowsprit and lifting of the bobstay attachment to the stem have streamlined the forward end of the boat and made it drier for the bow team. Photographers are the only losers

Wild Oats XI

LATERAL FOIL The lateral foil adds lift downwind, reducing any tendency to bury the bow into waves and thus improving the downwind speed profile. The foil is deployed to the windward side in upwind mode to minimise drag

FOILS From left to right: starboard daggerboard, rudder, keel, forward centreboard, port daggerboard. The aperture for the lateral foil can just be seen on the starboard side of the hull. Note original position of the bobstay

Wild Oats XI and Comanche

WITH COMANCHE Given that Wild Oats X I’s stern can fit twice into Comanche ’s it’s hard to believe that the two boats were so evenly matched. But when Comanche heels at 25° she has the same wetted surface as Wild Oats . The latter’s narrower cross section allows her to gain mileage from VMG running

Wild Oats XI: Not Ready To Collect Her Pension

Published on December 16th, 2015 by Editor -->

Robert Oatley’s 100-foot Wild Oats XI is a special boat. In her first season, the maxi won the ‘treble’ in the 2005 Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, winning both line honors and overall handicap as well as setting a new race record. In her 10 year span, Wild Oats XI has been first to Hobart in 8 of 10 races, winning the treble again in 2012.

After overcoming the challenge by Jim & Kristy Clark’s newly launched 100-foot Comanche in the 2014 Sydney Hobart, passing them in a light air section of the race, the 10 year old Reichel/Pugh Yacht Design saw a need to boost her ability in breeze or risk losing the reign as the supreme super maxi.

Wild Oats XI had been updated over the years, but nothing like her latest modification. As she prepares for the 2015 Sydney Hobart on December 26, Scuttlebutt editor Craig Leweck checked in with Jim Pugh for the details…

What got done to the hull? The boat was 100-feet long, which is the maximum length for the Sydney Hobart Race as well as many others races. So the task was to make changes but return her to this length. Approximately 2 meters was cut off the stern, which allowed us to lengthen the bow ahead of the mast. We had 11.5m cut off the bow, and a new bow was designed and built that was now 2m longer.

wild oats sailing yacht

What did this achieve? We effectively slid the hull forward on the rig and appendages by 2m. The new bow has more volume, which we achieved by fairing in the longer bow section. The boat should be significantly faster particularly reaching and running with more volume in the bow. They should be able to push the boat harder off the wind. The boat had always been extremely fast in the lighter conditions and these modifications upgrade the performance in stronger winds. Additionally, now they can set larger sails off the stem and new extended sprit. One of several sails will be a new free flying non- overlapping Jib off the stem.

Has this changed the sail plan? The rig is still the same and is pretty new. They still have the old headstay and position, but can set a larger jib free flying off the stem. These changes had as much to do with the rig as the hull. It allowed them to update their sail inventory to a more modern offshore inventory while improving on the practicalities and speed of changings sails offshore. They have some great sail design and handling guys on board so I am sure they made some nice tweaks to get them down the course and through changing conditions quicker.

Any tradeoffs to the hull modification? The stern will be a little draggier in the light but it will be worth trading away for the up-range performance. This would be the biggest trade off, but the boat had light air speed to burn.

How radical is it to do this kind of hull modification? This is not as difficult as it sounds, it is amazing what you can do with these composite hulls. In the Nineties we designed the 70-foot maxi Windquest. At the time 70 feet was the max size allowed, but the rule was later changed to 80 feet. When Windquest was sold and became Alexia, we designed a new significantly longer bow (built by McConaghy) for the boat, and when combined with a short stern scoop, extended the boat to 79 feet overall. The boat continued to excel, going on to win quite a few championships.

Wild Oats XI is now ten years old. Are their ‘old age’ benefits when it comes to the rating rule? There are old age benefits but they are not ready to collect their pension. They want the challenge of beating the new boats to Hobart.

Sydney to Hobart yacht race overall title awarded to Tasmanian boat Alive

Alive wins Sydney to Hobart 2018

Mini maxi Alive has won the Sydney to Hobart yacht race on handicap, becoming the first Tasmanian boat to do so in 39 years.

Alive crossed the line in fifth place behind the fleet's four super maxis and had to wait in Hobart hoping not to be bettered by other competitors.

But one by one the likes of Wild Oats X, Chutzpah, Smuggler and defending champion Ichi Ban failed to beat their required handicap finish times to claim the coveted Tattersall Cup for themselves.

The last Tasmanian boat to win the race on handicap was Screw Loose back in 1979.

In 1994, the maxi Tasmania was skippered to line honours victory by Tasmanian businessman Bob Clifford, the founder of the Hobart ship-building company Incat.

While there are still boats yet to finish the race they are out contention for handicap honours.

The all-women crew of Wild Oats X skippered by Stacey Jackson came second in the handicap standings, followed by Voodoo and Ichi Ban.

'This shows you can dream big'

Alive is registered with the Derwent Sailing Squadron in Hobart's Sandy Bay and was purchased in 2014 by Tasmanian businessman Phillip Turner.

The 66-footer was skippered by fellow Tasmanian Duncan Hine who leads a crew of Queenslanders, Tasmanians and a Dutch navigator.

Turner said he and his crew were happy to bring home a win to Tasmania.

"Well it's been 39 years and I was born and bred here, so it's a great thing for Hobart," he said.

Turner said Alive would be back next year to defend its title.

Hine said he was stoked but still trying to get his head around the win.

"You can't get more pleased than this, you can't even say what you're feeling because you haven't even taken it in yet," he said.

"That was part of our ambition, to finish in our home port, to win one of the world's toughest and greatest races and show that you can dream."

She last raced the Sydney to Hobart in 2016 where she placed 17th overall and eighth across the line.

Wild Oats XI, which took line honours glory on Friday , finished 11th in the handicap standings.

Hamilton Island Race Week underway for 2024

Hamilton Island Race Week officially opened with a bang last night, marked with fireworks at the Nautilus Marine Insurance Yacht Owners and Skippers Welcome Cocktail Party. While the welcome went off with plenty of sparks, the breeze this morning for the first day of racing was lack-lustre.

The 164 boats split into twelve divisions headed out for the scheduled 1130 start across the Dent Passage and Eastern Passage starting areas, and were met by a glass out.

After the lengthy postponement, a beautiful easterly filled across the Whitsundays, and when most had all but given up, racing got underway at 1335 for the Rating Series divisions, and Hamilton Island Blue, from Eastern Passage. The remainder of the Hamilton Island divisions, the Trailable Yachts, and the Multihulls, got underway in Dent Passage from 1355 as the breeze built in the channel.

It was incredible work by the twenty-four strong volunteer-driven Race Committee, who are on Hamilton Island to run the racing. The team cleverly changed the scheduled short passage races into afternoon sprints to ensure the races could be held, and all divisions came back together for a stunning southerly bound finish into Dent.

Mark Richards at the helm of Wild Oats X was the IRC Rating Division 1 winner, followed very closely by sistership Alive, skippered by Duncan Hine, also an RP66. Completing the top three was David Gotze’s, No Limit.

“Early days”, Mark Richards said of the win. “We’ve made a few changes, and they must be working, which is good”.

“It’s such a special week for us, for the whole Wild Oats family”, he continued. “My grandkids are here, and a lot of the crew have family here. To have a win, when this week means so much to us, is just fantastic. Now we will go out and see what we can do tomorrow”.

IRC Rating Division 2 saw Matador skippered by David Doherty take first place with Marcus Blackmore’s Hooligan second and Gordon Ketelbey’s Zen rounded out the podium. This division is made up of 52 foot yachts, all of which are TP52s except Virago, the one-off RP52 design. It promises to be fiercely contested again this year.

Wazza Red Boat skippered by Garth Riley were winners of IRC Rating Division 3 with second achieved by Nocleks skippered by Joel Skelton and Bruce McCraken’s Ikon secured third, finishing exactly a minute after the winner on corrected time.

The IRC Super 40 division saw Ray Roberts’ Team Hollywood secure first place followed by Secret Weapon skippered by Billy Leonard in second, David Ross’ Cape 31 Kukukerchu took third.

The Cape 31 class are also contesting their 2024 National Championship during Hamilton Island Race Week, and Kukukerchu also took the opening race in their one-design fleet. Dirty Deeds DC, skippered by Alan Stein, and B4-Celestial, skippered by Sam Haynes, rounded out the minor placings.

“It was a tough day even before the racing, we were bobbing around like corks”, said David Ross of the long wait for wind.

“We have a great fleet, and what made it really interesting was that we were racing with the Super 40’s, which adds another dimension to it”.

“We had a good start, it was chaotic at the first mark, Dirty Deeds were onto it and put on an A3, the right call, and the rest of us had A2’s or 1.5’s. Regardless, we worked well as a team, and everyone kept us on our toes, but we put it together” he finished on the win.

Hamilton Island Light Blue on EHC was won by Gin & Tonic skippered by Mitch White, followed by Triton with Michael Cranitch at the helm and eWalter Carpenter’s Caol Ila. The range in ratings in this division highlighted by the almost 24 minute turnaround for Gin & Tonic, after second place Triton led the division across the line by over three minutes.

Within one minute on corrected time, were Shannan Hart’s Wide Load followed by Malcolm Roe’s Amazing Nizam and Shane McKay’s Kerazy finishing in first, second and third in the Hamilton Island Fluro Yellow division.

Peter Barry’s Shearwater came in first on EHC in the Hamilton Island Orange division with Geoff Adams’ Rampallion and Philip Cormie’s Solutions claiming second and third.

In the Hamilton Island Pink division, co-skippers Rick Rogers and David Stoopman’s L’Esprit came out on top with Alan Hill’s Cooloola in second, with third place going to Charm Offensive skippered by Tim Lewis.

The Multihull Hamilton Island Black division saw Marc Gerard’s Storm Bay become triumphant with Jeff Dodd’s Zero take second place and Stuart Cox’s Cut Snake secure third.

Mick Hodgins’ Tao took the honours in Multihull Hamilton Island White, over David Molloy’s Trim and Kevin Lord’s Vivacious.

The Trailable Yachts Division saw a close finish on corrected time between Hugh Alexander’s Serenata and Paul Hawkins’ 5 O’clock Somewhere with the former taking first place. Masquerade skippered by Tom Vujasinovic made it into third.

Sea Change skippered by Clive Saunders took first place in the Non-Spinnaker division with Remco Pen’s Bigger Day Out and Nev Watts’ Blizzard rounding out the top three.

Racing is set to continue tomorrow from 11.00am across all courses, and with the southeasterly trades set to build for the rest of the week, incredible onshore action, and over 2,000 sailors all in #HIRW mode, it is certain to be an incredible week.
