History, mystery and private island escapes
Pula was built on indulgence. The Romans created the 20,000 seat amphitheatre as a venue to scrap, shout and sink wine. Croatia’s best preserved ancient monument now hosts sing-out-loud alfresco shows. Jamiroquai and Manu Chao recently rocked the house. Pack a pair of shades for your visit. Pula sits on the sun-kissed southern tip of Istria, and soaks up 2,300 sunshine hours per year.

INSPIRATIONAL ITINERARIES IN CROATIA
Venice to Porto Montenegro. In the Adriatic, culture is alive, it’s history in the making. Cruise through three nations and a dozen empires.
Dubrovnik to Sibenik. Cruise through an archipelago of 1,200 islands. Marvel at the history and beauty of the Dalmatian coast.
Croatia's st tropez.
The Brijuni Islands are the best reason to cruise to Pula. Curiously, this 14-island archipelago passed from a Venetian count to an Austrian businessman to a Yugoslavian president. The result? The Brijuni Islands seas have been protected for seven centuries. Lobsters say hi to snorkelers. Paddleboarders have dolphins for friends.
Rome On Sea
Venetians imported epicureanism to Pula in 1331. Gelato and grappa may still be ordered in Italian today. Pula’s fish market is a sushi lover’s dream. Red shrimp and Adriatic tuna can be sliced into sashimi by your chef - or diced into ceviche if you prefer. Don’t forget black truffles from the Istrian hinterland. Your Y.CO Charter Specialist can even organise a truffle foraging tour.
Clear Waters And Pine Groves
You’ll need a yacht to explore Pula’s offshore islands. Imagine a fractal explosion of forested green specks. Ceja has one jetty, one beach and one restaurant serving grilled squid. Porer has one lighthouse and a lone lighthouse keeper, who pairs line-caught sea bass with starry nights. Fenera is a nature reserve island with 1,000 starfish and a census population of zero. Other islands are so teeny-tiny you could plant your flag and call yourself king or queen. After a bottle of slivovitz plum brandy, it has been known to happen.

Dear Nicolas, - Once again, many thanks for arranging this charter. For the boat - great in terms of overall layout - spacious rooms in brand new condition. Lots of space to move around and plenty of space for 10 passengers. Also good space on the deck - especially on the triboard which is well protected from the sun - we spent a lot of time there. Technically in very good condition - great ventilation and stabilisers. No smell of diesel whatsoever - engine room well pressurised and in immaculate condition. Boat was very stable throughout and not noisy during the night passages. Lots of toys on board - all brand new. They will have their own seabobs next yeat (very popular toy for us and especially the kids). Great idea with the slide from the top deck.. The crew definitely made this a fantastic journey - it will be hard to find better. Great service - discreet and nice without being invasive. Always new decorative touches during lunch and dinner. Candles in the evening. We were pleasently surprised because they had a lot of initiative in that sense. Unpacked our bags and hung everything in a tidy manner. Beds always prepared twice a day. Crew very helpful with the toys - we were very demanding in that sense since we wanted everything prepared for the morning - and we required a lot of stuff to be prepared and in the water. Chef is great - always fresh food and great recepies - this boat deserves to be qualified as a michelin star restaurant. Great breakfast and amazing desserts. So overall - great experience. We would also like to thank you for organising the charter and the embarkment which was very efficient and stress free. I realise that you had to coordinate a lot of things at the last minute. We will be getting in touch with you for our future charters. Charter on AUSTRALIS around Naples & Amalfi.

Roman Arena Photo Credit Missy Johnston
Pula, in northern Croatia on the western coast of the Istrian Peninsula, has long been favored as a settlement location throughout the millenniums, especially by the Romans as can be seen by the extraordinary arena that is still a focal point of Pula today. Pula has a very long history, a great protected harbor with a major marina, and is a gateway into Istria, known for wineries, truffle hunting, shell farming, honey, and the production of olive oil. Pula also has been a center of ship building. As the first mainland port north after cruising through the Cres-Losing group of islands in the Kvarner Gulf, Pula is a natural port of call on a yacht charter in Croatia.
Pula is located in a naturally protected location along the western coast of the Istrian Peninsula, which civilizations have long beneficially used with evidence of settled life being found in the area from over a million years ago. There are remains from both the Bronze Age and the Hellenistic Age, however, the greatest impact, at least that which is seen today in Pula, was that of the Roman Empire. The Pula Arena was built between 27 BC and 68 AD, much of it still standing to this day anchoring the harbor front area of the city. The Romans also created both a water supply and a sewage system for the city and built strong surrounding fortification walls with ten gates. The remains of some of the walls can still be seen today within the city along with several of the gates including the triumphal Arch of the Sergii, the Gate of Hercules (in which the names of the founders of the city are engraved) and the Twin Gates. It was in Pula that Crispus Caesar was executed in 326 AD and Gallus Caesar was executed in 354 AD. After the Fall of Rome, this part of Croatia went through various rulers just as was the fate of other areas of Croatia.
Cleaned Section of the Arena Walls Photo Credit Missy Johnston
Identifiable as an arena, as the structure is built in an oval shape, the arena in Pula is the only remaining Roman Arena in the world with a complete encircling wall. Undergoing cleaning, today one can see the original color of the cleaned part of the arena white stone wall gleaming against the remaining stone wall as darkened by modern pollution and imagine what the Arena once looked like, and will look like again when fully cleaned with stark white walls against the bright blue sky. With the cleaning, one can perhaps understand the impact this huge Arena made in Roman times on those arriving in Pula harbor. Built to host 20,000 spectators, we know today by the post holes remaining in the arena structure that those spectators sat in comfort as a huge cloth cover, soaked in bee’s wax to repel rain, came out over the seating area for sun and rain protection. Today, the labyrinth of space underneath the Arena where animals were housed before the events, and where Warriors and Gladiators prepared are open to the public with explanatory signage.
Roman Built Arch of the Sergi Photo Credit Missy Johnston
Not far from the Arena is Pula Old Town, once the Roman town which was further enlarged during medieval times and is filled with little winding walking streets. The easiest entrance is through the Roman built Arch of the Sergi, also known as the Golden Gate. This majestic arch was erected around 27 BC by the Sergi Family to commemorate three brothers who fought in the naval battle of Actium where the future emperor Augustus Caesar defeated Marc Antony and Cleopatra on the Greek mainland. It stood at the entrance to the Roman town, the remains of the corresponding walls of which can still be seen along the road leading to the gate. The walking streets open up into a lovely piazza housing the perfectly proportioned Roman Temple of Augustus built between 2 B.C. and 14 A.D. Fronted by a high porch supported by six Corinthian columns, the temple survived the Christian time period by being converted to a church only to be destroyed by a bomb when Pula was heavily bombed during WWII in 1944. The Temple was painstakingly re-constructed stone by stone after WWII, and now houses a small archeological museum.

It is in Old Town Pula where all comes alive at night, although the harbor is also quite active with a light show that plays for 15 minutes on the hour at the city’s 19th-century Uljanik shipyard, one of the world’s oldest working shipyards. Created by renowned lighting designer Dean Skira, the shipyard’s iconic cranes are lit up in 16,000 different color schemes. In Old Town, the bars and night clubs are very active, particularly in the piazza where the Temple of Augustus is located where cafes and bars have outdoor seating around the piazza with the Temple artfully lit at night.
When in Pula, don’t miss spending a day exploring the rest of Istria, perhaps heading to Livade for an hour long Truffle Hunting Exhibition to learn all there is to learn about Truffle Hunting; after which to enjoy a lunch filled with truffles at Zigante Restaurant. Also, when in Istria, there are many boutique wineries to visit for a wine tasting, and farms advertising tastings of olive oil, honey, and even donkey milk. Perhaps also visit the medieval walled village of Motovun.

Roman Arena: Have a private guided tour of the arena, or wander through yourself. Be sure to look for the entrance to the area under the arena, which few remaining Roman arenas or coliseums have excavated and open, to see into the fascinating belly of the arena.
Old Town: Filled with shops, cafes, bars, and restaurants, enter through the Arch of Sergi and wander the little walking streets. The most active area will be the piazza where the Temple of Augustus can be seen. Visit the archeology museum inside the Temple. Old Town has a very active night life.
Kastel: Located in the middle of Pula, on the water, this Kastel was built when the Venetians controlled Pula in the 1600s. Built in a star pattern, considered “state of the art” in fortress building after gunpowder became wide spread in use, the Kastel was built to defend Pula’s harbor as well as the upper Adriatic Sea.
Small Roman Theatre: The only one of a pair of smaller and one larger theatres built by the Romans in the Pula area to compliment the arena, making Pula a center of entertainment in this part of the Roman Empire.
Pula Aquarium: Built within the Austro-Hungarian fortress Verudela, this Aquarium is the largest in Croatia and features tanks of fresh and salt water species native to Croatia including a shark tank, along with tropical displays, a turtle rescue center and an entire room featuring sea horses.
Well-located on a natural safe harbor, civilizations for over a million years have settled in and around the Pula area and today is no different. Be sure when chartering in Croatia to include Pula as a stop or start or end a charter in Pula when cruising in northern Croatia.

Suggested sailing itinerary, wind & weather conditions, marina details, sample prices - pula sailing itinerary - wind & weather - marina details.
You can go in virtually any direction from Pula and be assured of a great holiday. Heading north offers the town of Rovinj, or further, the chance to sail to Italy. Following the coastline southwards will take you across to Rijeka and Krk (and further, to the party town of Pag). Or if you’re an island hopper, you can hop down and around Cres, Losinj, and onwards to the Kornati islands.
In total, the route is 138 nautical miles, and takes in beautiful Rovinj, the party district of Veruda, and the islands of Cres, Osor and Susak. 138 nautical miles means sailing for an average of 23 nautical miles, which, at an average speed of 5-6 knots, means you should be sailing for about 4-6 hours a day (leaving plenty of time to explore the places where you start and end the day, or spending time on beaches or in bays along the way). It should be a leisurely pace and leaves you plenty of time to relax and enjoy the sunshine.
Rovinj is a historic and beautiful fishing town with narrow cobbled streets and an almost venetian feel – which, given how close we are to Venice, makes sense. The town was once an island – the channel between the island and the mainland was only filled in in 1763.
The old town is a brilliant place to stroll around (particularly with an ice-cream) and the whole place begins to buzz in the evenings, when the landlubbing tourists leave their four-star hotels and fill the bars and restaurants. Rovinj is one of the prettiest towns in Croatia (and there are many) and it is well worth this trip north to savour its’ unique atmosphere.
Another reason why sailing to Rovinj made sense was because it means that we can sail through the Brijuni islands as part of this itinerary. The 14 Brijuni islands and islets are now a marine national park, and look full of nature, but they have a crazy history, which you’ll be able to spot as you sail by. They were first used as a lavish holiday island by a super-rich Roman family, who built a giant Roman villa on the largest island (which you can still see the ruins of today), later it became the holiday islands of the local royal family, before becoming something of an 18th century tourist resort, complete with four five-star hotels and the first golf course in Croatia. No, seriously. It was also the centre of the Polo playing world, for a short while.
After decades of decline, it ended up in the hands of the state and General Tito, the communist president of Yugoslavia, restored some of its former glory before inviting the heads of state of 90 countries to the islands in 1989 to sign the Brijuni agreement! Nowadays, there’s a safari/zoo on the island which was built up primarily from animals gifted to General Tito - so don’t be surprised if you spot a Zebra or an elephant on the islands!
Passing the Brijuni islands, we’re going beyond Pula and up an inlet to Veruda. Once a lively village in its own right, it’s now connected to Pula by urban sprawl, and if you were based in Pomer, now is a good time to walk across and see what Pula has to offer for yourself. You’ll have noticed the beaches and forts on your sail in – all of which are worth a visit if you have time, and Veruda itself is a posh part of town, so you could spend the afternoon ogling at Ferrari’s and Porsches on the driveways nearby. Veruda is also one of the livelier districts come the evening, and this will be your last chance to party before we head off to secluded islands.
From Veruda we’re going around the Istrian headland before heading north-easterly then east to get to the marina at Cres. The prevailing wind will likely be behind you at some point, and you can score bonus points for goose-winging your sails. You’ll notice the fine countryside on the coast and islands as you sail around, and it’s likely that this scenery hasn’t changed for hundreds of years.
The marina at Cres is on the far side of town, so you’ll get a great view of the old town (and it’s churches and 16th century Venetian tower) as you sail by. There’s plenty of places to eat and drink – particularly around the old harbour, at the centre of the old town, where you can sit and watch the fisherman preparing their boats for a busy night at sea.
Depending upon your tactics, you could take your time and stop at a beach on the way or make the distance straightaway then anchor in the bay just north of Osor for a swim whilst you wait for the time to pass before getting back on the boat before 5pm. At 5pm, priority should be given to boats coming from the South.
Osor is a tiny walled town which doesn’t look like much, but was once the centre-point of Roman trade in the area. Originally Cres and Losinj were one island, but the Romans dug the canal between the islands and renamed them. Osor was an important bishopric in their empire, and was still important well into the middle-ages, when a plague hit the town and the great explorers found more exciting trade routes to America, India and China.Nowadays, it’s a tranquil tourist village, with museums, statues, and five or six different local “konoba” or restaurants, all serving reasonable grilled fish and other local cuisine.
We’re going to need to use the canal swing-bridge, which opens at 9am today, and will save you 12 nautical miles on having to sail the other way right around Losinj to Susak, so you’ll have to be on your toes early doors – even if most of the crew go back to bed once you’re out at sea. To get to Susak, it’s a sail southwards alongside the island of Losinj, and the small marina and port of Susak are on it’s Eastern side. You’ll be sailing close-hauled at times, and beating into the wind at others.
Susak is a beautiful place to spend the night, and is different to the other islands in the area – instead of vines and pines trees, the main plant in Susak is Oregano. Some people say they can smell it from miles out to sea. Despite the island having been inhabited for over two thousand years, there’s precious little known about the history of the island – mainly because we’re so far away from the mainland that proper schooling was only introduced in 1955, so no one could read or write. Coupled to that, a vast swathe of the population were forced off the island after world war two (on account of their Italian heritage, in communist Yugoslavia), so the oral history of the island was also lost.
Susak is a super-relaxing place to spend the night, and there’s a suprising number of restaurants given there’s only a population of 200 people, and the chief mode of transport on the island is walking along dusty, sandy paths.
From Susak, we’re bearing in a North-westerly direction towards the land on the horizon, where people headed to Pomer will head for their marina, whilst those in Pula will follow the Istrian headland further north-west before turning in. In the prevailing summer winds, you should find yourself reaching, so it’s possible to get from Susak in pretty much one tack.
When you’re back at your marina, you’ll need to refuel the yacht (this is easy in Pomer as our agents will do this for you as there is no fuel berth, but for Pula, the fuel dock is to the East of the marina in Pula) before returning it from where it came. You’ll need to be back in good time on the Friday evening to allow our partners to inspect the boat, but you’ll be able to sleep on the yacht or catamaran tonight and do the formal check-out in the morning.
If you haven’t yet explored the local town, then now is a great time to do so, and you’ll likely find plenty of other excited sailors out sharing their stories from their own adventures at sea. It’s also their last night, so it should be a lively night in the local bars. Hopefully you’ve had a wonderful and relaxing holiday, everyone is even better friends than a week ago, and you’re already talking about your next great adventure
During the summer season, the winds are so reliable that the locals claim they can set their watch by them – they tend to blow from 9am to 12pm, then there is a mid-day lull (the locals say that the winds ‘go for lunch’), before returning with greater force from around 3pm until sunset. After sunset, the winds tend to die right down, so you shouldn’t have too many issues with loose ropes clanking through the night.
If you get further out into the Adriatic channel, the wind shoots down from Venice to the centre of the Mediterranean – but close to the Croatian islands and the coastline, the mistral winds of the summer tend to prevail in a landwards direction, towards the mainland.
We operate out of 4 marinas in or around Pula - they are all within easy distance of the airport, and all offer excellent facilities to visiting sailors.
If you're staying in the area before or after your charter, we can recommend these places in Pula - Hotel Amfiteater or Guest House Rock Depadance . If you're staying in Pomer then Rooms Villa Rosa Medulin or Apartments Goga Pomer are good options.
ACI Pula benefits from being next to the historic and beautiful city of Pula.
ACI Pomer is a short taxi-ride away from Pula, in the countryside on the other side of the peninsular (where people have been building holiday villas since Roman times. ACI Pomer even has a swimming pool to help you enjoy the wait for the boat to be ready.
Marina Veruda is based in one of the fancier parts of the ancient and beautiful city of Pula, and you’ll find supercars and multi-million euro apartments located around the marina. It’s just a five minute drive from the old town.
Marina Medulin is based 10km south-east of Pula old town, and is a custom built charter base. Medulin itself is a very pleasant small sea-side town, which attracts lots of campers and tourists through the summer months.

Your skipper will be waiting at the marina pier at 15:00. He will help you accommodate aboard and hold a short briefing with some basic safety directions, before you set sail. Soon you will get the chance, to anchor in tranquil Kamenjak park. Only the brave ones will dare to dive from the impressive cliffs into the crystal-clear sea. Having a cocktail in a »safari bar« within the wildlife resort Kamenjak is a must. This evening is ideal to enjoy and relax in a glass of Malvazija wine and local delicacies on a traditional Istrian farm.
Leaving Istria behind, we will be crossing Kvarner channel, curving into the mainland all the way to the port of Rijeka. If you pay attention, you can easily spot swarms of playful dolphins in this remote area.
Early in the afternoon you reach the largest island in Croatia, Cres. Of course you will have plenty of time to take a swim in one of its many secluded coves before docking in the heart of this colourful town.
Overnight in a picturesque Cres town port, where vibrant ancient streets meet modern architecture. Here, you will have the chance to walk the buzzing promenades and taste the very best of Kvarner cuisine. Island lamb »under the bell« or grilled fish is one of the traditional delicacies. Don't forget to taste the famous island's olive oil.
Morning coffee in a town square is a must before setting sail. Western part of Cres hides some of the most beautiful beaches in Croatia where you can stop for a quick swim. Alluring emerald waters are ideal for some morning activities. Here you can actually see that isolated Kvarner islands really have one of the cleanest seas in the planet.
Overnight in the ancient village Osor, founded by ancient Greeks couple of centuries back in history, a large seaborne trade post with 20.000 residents, today a small town on the shore banks of a narrow channel between the island Lošinj and Cres.
The bridge connecting the islands opens only twice a day for the passing yachts attracting masses of viewers, so don't forget to wave. You can dine in one of the local taverns and try traditionally prepared fish and one of the local original local dishes - the famous Kvarner shrimps.
In the morning you can ascend on a ridge, elevating over the town to catch the early sunrise. Sailing along the aromatic green forests of Lošinj island, we will soon reach the “island of flowers” Ilovik.
With only 300 inhabitants this tiny island attracts mostly nautical guests. The main reason is its position. Almost forgotten island is the juncture of main course routes between Kvarner and Dalmatian islands . It is a charming fishing village with typical island heartbeat, small-run local restaurants, lovely sandy beaches and magnificent flora.
It is a special place to explore and share you sailing adventures with sailors from all over the world that met here. This little isle will leave you the impression of how unique a private sailing experience really is. Dig into freshly baked octopus, lamb or veggies while you sip on delicious local Malvazija wines and cheers to another unforgettable day at sea.
To buy some warm, home baked bread in Ilovik would be a good choice. The morning route will take us to the scenic sandy beaches of the island Susak, formed by an ancient river with accumulation of the sand from mainland and is geologically entirely covered in sandstone. Jump in the clear water and maybe take a refreshment in a local bar. We overnight in Mali Lošinj, the largest town of the county.
Here you can take a stroll between the colourful painted house fronts and have one of the best ice creams around. Live music playing on the streets of this town adds a unique bohemian charm to this " island of Croatian Captains". This is a great opportunity to taste the nightlife during your yacht charter week in Croatia . Lošinj is besides popular Hvar, one of the sunniest places in Europe. Don't forget to visit local market in the morning and have a coffee on a lively town square.
As you approach Unije island, you will soon meet the scent of rosemary and lavender. Emerald crystalline waters surrounding this place are inviting enough to snorkel or swim in a well-protected bay "Maracol". A short distance walk to this amazing village before evening will reward you with spectacular scenery and views across peaceful Kvarner gulf.
This remote colorful village is simply a must-visit during sailing trip and experience a laid-back pulse of the Mediterranean.
Community of 150 settlers, mostly fishermen and farmers, is nowadays leading typical laid-back island life. Fell free to have a beer or an ice cream in a local tavern, and feel the heartbeat of true island life.
With its white stone houses and blue window shutters, Unije makes an impressive site. One of the most irresistible places to visit and enjoy in a quiet picturesque setting of densely forested surrounding hills.
Our last day aboard we'll sail up north to our home port and have one last chance for a quick swim in one of the many bays at the south peak of Istrian peninsula.
We'll dock late afternoon in the base marina.
If you didn't get the chance to visit Pula you should take one night off to to taste the nightlife of this historic capital of Istria and blend into its buzzing streets. No1. attraction is definitively the impressive 1.st century Roman amphitheater.

The largest city with 75,000 inhabitants, situated on the peninsula has had a great past and invites the charters to dock here. The majority of the monuments in the old town date back to the Roman heyday in the first century.
One building in particular is very eye-catching. Right next to the ACI Marina behind Tito Park is the huge Amphitheater. It is reminiscent of the Colosseum in Rome and is the fifth largest Roman Theater in the world.
The impressive and well-preserved, although scooped facade gives the visitor an idea about the former importance of the construction force, which has a seating capacity for 2300 spectators.
In summer it is still being used for music and dance events. A large number of the local sailing and motor yachts are charter yachts. Pula is an ideal starting point for charter yachts with destination Croatian islands or Italy.
