Here's where to get your Boat Week merch this week

Whether you’re participating in Saturday’s historic Port Huron-to-Mackinac Island Sailboat Race or visiting downtown to join in on the Boat Week fun, there are plenty of places to pick up a T-shirt or nautical souvenir to commemorate the occasion.

This year marks the second that MI Passion, 229 Huron Ave., has carried T-shirts with the Bayview logo for the Mackinac race — now with the emblem for its 100th anniversary.

But they’re going fast.

Boutique owner Anita Varty said she bought over 600 shirts, and by midday Thursday, had fewer than 200 left. Those include a women’s V-neck and a unisex shirt in white and gray colors. The race logo is shown enlarged on the back with a smaller version on the front chest of the shirts.

The shirts ranged in cost from $29.99 to $34.99. MI Passion was slated to be open until 8 p.m. Thursday, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday.

Although they had plenty of other Michigan-made and nautical items, particularly themed for the lake and river, Varty said she was excited to be part of celebrating its 100th anniversary.

“The most exciting thing for me is seeing everybody out,” Varty said. “Like the energy downtown, I so looked forward to this week.”

Official Mackinac shirts can otherwise be purchased on Mackinac Island and through the Bayview Yacht Club in Detroit.

The Port Huron Yacht Club’s women’s auxiliary is selling a variety of merchandise for both the club and specific items with a Mac 2024 logo, celebrating Port Huron’s spot as a start to the race but unaffiliated with the Bayview’s race merchandise.

Missy Smith, the auxiliary’s commodore, said the display of apparel would be out from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Thursday and Friday and Saturday morning with whatever items were left unsold. Typically, she said they only acquire enough to sell out, having first started selling items five weeks ago and on Wednesday for Boat Week.

“And it’s looking like this year we will probably sell out," she said. "… That’s what I’ve been telling everybody on their boats. ‘Oh, I like that shirt.’ If you want to get one, I would go now.”

As of midday Thursday, the merch included women’s V-neck T-shirts, regular unisex cotton T-shirts, and men’s long-sleeve sport tech shirts all in several colors, as well as hooded zip-up sweatshirts and tank tops. There were also yacht club sweatpants that didn’t have the Mac 2024 logo and sandals.

“And then, this year, we bought a new item, and it’s a T-shirt hoodie,” Smith said. “So, it’s T-shirt material, but it’s long-sleeved, and it has a hood. They’re really comfortable. And we have those in three colors.”

Prices for the local club’s merchandise, Smith said, ranged from $20 for tank tops to $60 for the zip-up sweatshirts with T-shirts falling in between.

Plenty of other stops with nautical-themed items to celebrate

Outside the official race shirt and local yacht club merch, a few other spots downtown had displays with boat-themed or items with anchors and other nautical symbols.

The Huron Lady II, for example, docked on the East Quay Street side of the Black River, had hats and T-shirts — the latter prompting you “take a ride” — on display for sale with small icons of the iconic cruise.

Elsewhere, the downtown shoe store District 43 also carried plenty of other items, such as through the Michigan Boat Company label.

“That’s our company,” said store owner Jorja Baldwin. “So, we have Michigan Boat Company. We have Motor City sun shirts, Michigan Boat Company tank tops, and an unofficial Michigan Boat Company Mackinac shirt.”

Baldwin said District 43 would be open from 2 to 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday and closed on Saturday.

When asked about their apparel, she said, “I like them all. It’s tank tops, T-shirts, sweatshirts because it’s Michigan. I feel like we have a little something for everyone. We have women’s tanks, and then, unisex things. The river mermaid because I like we can tie in the Black River and Lake Huron experiences.”

Syracuse Boat Tours offer themed cruises on Onondaga Lake

There are few American cities where you can relax on a boat in the middle of a lake and take in a sweeping view of the skyline as you sip a cocktail.

Syracuse is one of those geographically blessed cities where such pleasures are possible—if you own a boat, that is.

Now the boatless among us can enjoy a cruise around Onondaga Lake without the hassle of owning a boat, thanks to Syracuse Boat Tours , a new marine tourism-focused company that began booking cruises earlier this month.

The public response so far has been “pretty solid,” said owner/operator Annette Peters, a Syracuse native who lives on the Seneca River.

“I love this community, and we’ve got a jewel in Onondaga Lake that we just don’t appreciate,” Peters said. “I’ve taken people out on my boat on Onondaga Lake for years and they’re always so shocked how beautiful it is and how seldom its used.”

Peters says she’s picking up where Mid-Lakes Navigation, the last company to offer Onondaga Lake cruises, left off about 10 years ago. The company operates one boat at the moment, a 22-passenger pontoon boat.

Scheduled open-seating for one-hour or 90-minute cruises depart daily. The best way to get a seat is to book online . The boat is also available for private charters.

Depending on the cruise, admission costs $12.50-$15 for children; $27.50-$30 for adults.

Syracuse Boat Tours offers a range of themed cruises, including:

• Tiki Cruises: jam to Caribbean music as you sip fruity cocktails/mocktails. On Tiki Tuesdays the boat will pick you up and drop you off at the funky Tiki Bar on the Seneca River, where passengers get a ten percent discount.
• Happy Hour Cruises: Cruise from the Seneca River into the lake and watch the Syracuse skyline come into view. Music provided, or passengers can bring their own playlists.
• Historical Cruises: Narrated cruises that delve into the lake’s long history.
• Sunset Cruises: Get a front row seat to a spectacular sunset over the lake.

Other themed cruises will be scheduled throughout the summer, including a wine-tasting tour, a Seneca River cruise, bourbon-tasting tour, and fall cider and foliage tours.

If business is good, Peters plans to upgrade service next year with a bigger boat ideal for dinner cruises. The pontoon boat could then be used to shuttle passengers to the Amp, Inner Harbor/Aquarium, Onondaga Lake Park, or the Tiki Bar on the river.

As more people recognize Onondaga Lake as a tourist destination, Peters says she’s positioned to take advantage of CNY’s future growth.

“We need a water taxi, and this is the first one,” she said. “That’s the dream.”

What Does Yacht Certified Mean and Why You Would Want It

If you are unfamiliar with yacht certification, you are encouraged to learn more about what it means and why it is so important for both current and prospective boat owners.

The term “Yacht Certified” refers to a quality control process governed by the NMMA, an organization that ensures that yachts and boats are constructed to industry standards. As many as 90% of boats currently on the water in the U.S. carry an NMMA certification placard.

The NMMA certification process serves to remove these headaches by requiring participating manufacturers to pass physical inspections.

What Does Yacht Certified Mean?

Yacht certification is handled by the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA). The program is designed for manufacturers, so that they may show prospective boat buyers that the vessel has been built to meet or exceed the standards of the American Boats & Yacht Council (ABYC).

Every model of a manufacturer’s fleet must be inspected annually for Yacht Certification. If a company decides to participate in the NMMA program, they run every design plan by the organization and continue to produce vessels that meet these same standards.

What Are the Standards?

Standards are applied to the critical components of the yacht so that consumers know that they are purchasing a boat that has passed an extensive physical inspection. The following components are emphasized during the inspection process:

• Bilge pumps
• Bilge blowers
• Fuel hoses and tanks
• Steering parts

How Do Boats Qualify to Be Yacht Certified?

To meet the definition of a yacht, the boat must be 26 feet or longer. The NMMA does build capacity tags for boats shorter than 26 feet, so the certification process indeed covers a wide range of vessels.

Manufacturers apply for certification on their behalf and pay annual membership fees. They must also meet inspection filing deadlines once they have become NMMA members. As such, membership in the Yacht Certification program shows that a company is determined to meet or exceed industry standards.

How Do You Know A Boat Is NMMA Certified?

You will know a boat is Yacht Certified if you see a sticker showing “NMMA Certified using ABYC standards.” This will be located overtop either the capacity or yacht plate at the helm of the boat. You can ask your dealer if you don’t happen to notice the placard. If you go to a boat show, you may notice a directory that explicitly shows which boats among the lineup are NMMA certified.

Why You Would Want Yacht Certification

Prospective buyers can take advantage of the NMMA certification program as a way to ensure consistent quality across the board, regardless of manufacturer. For new owners, it is challenging to shop for boats. Prospective buyers don’t usually get to take a boat for a test drive, as they would with a vehicle.

Approximately 90% of all boats currently on the water in the United States are certified by the NMMA. From a manufacturer’s perspective, it is an excellent way to build trust with consumers.

Safety Standards of a Yacht Certified Boat

Since you won’t generally be able to go for a test drive, it’ll give you peace of mind to know that a vessel is a yacht certified by the NMMA. Research has shown that NMMA-certified boats are seven times less likely to receive safety recalls than non-certified boats.

While it’s true that the U.S Coast Guard inspects every new yacht for safety, the NMMA certification is an expansion of the standard federal inspection checklist. There aren’t any Coast Guard requirements for steering systems, storage batteries, or exhaust systems, among many other components.

Passenger Capacity on a Yacht Certified Boat

Recreational vessels longer than 26 feet in length are excluded from passenger capacity and stability standards. In smaller boats, you’ll notice marked placards somewhere along the interior, which clearly states passenger capacity and the maximum allowable weight.

Equipment Issues Can Be Hard to Diagnose

Just as is the case with cars and trucks, boat issues can be hard to diagnose. When you finally land your dream boat, the last thing you want on your hands is a mechanical issue that’ll land it in the shop for several days, if not weeks.

There are thousands of trained technicians who can determine whether a given component passes the ABYC test. If there are any issues, they can be resolved immediately while the vessel is still at the factory.

One of the many categories inspected to meet ABYC standards is electric wiring. This is significant because marine electrical systems are susceptible to a host of complicated problems, including bad connections, improper inverter installations, and poor choices for conductor materials.

Quality Assurance

The regulations of NMMA Yacht Certification state that participating manufacturers must have at least one staff member who is knowledgeable about ABYC standards. Participating staff must attend training sessions and successfully pass exams testing their level of competency.

As a prospective buyer, you’ll know that any craft that is NMMA Yacht Certified has been constructed under the guidance of a trained industry expert. This provides manufacturers with a convenient process for quality assurance.

Consistency

Every year manufacturers update their fleet to include new technology. There is no way of knowing the actual consequences of such modifications unless the boat is tested and approved by an independent technician.

The NMMA yacht certification program requires manufacturers to ensure that their boats are up to code every model year, even if no significant modifications have been made to the design schematic.

Consumer Satisfaction Index (CSI)

The Yacht Certification program provides makers with an established structure for tracking customer feedback. At the very least, companies must send their customers a census-type survey within the first 12 months of ownership. The NMMA then asks that the survey results are tabulated and forwarded up the chain to the manufacturer’s internal management.

Members also have the option to take part in the Marine Industry Customer Satisfaction Awards. This is a great way for prospective buyers to continuously view the top-rated brands and dealerships from this page.

How Long Do Yacht Certifications Last?

Certification inspections take place at the factory where the boats are originally manufactured. The dealerships do not generally take part in any certification process, so it’ll be more challenging to determine whether a used boat is up to code. You may find out that the vessel was originally Yacht Certified, which certainly helps with models that haven’t seen too much wear or tear.

Manufacturers provide owners with certification programs confirming the quality of used boats. Membership in such services involves having the yachts routinely maintained by certified technicians. The incentive for owners to enroll in such programs is that this coverage should help boost the resale value of their yacht.

Are There Any Other NMMA Certifications?

The NMMA has certification categories for many different types of watercraft, including personal watercraft. The organization also helps ensure that boat trailers are manufactured per code. Boat trailer inspections emphasize trailer and tire capacity ratings, brakes, and hand winches, among other critical components, to provide owners with peace of mind while they transport their prized possession.

Final Thoughts

They were given the care and upkeep of the Tabernacle and to be the priests of the Lord.  Part of their inheritance consisted of 48 cities that were spread throughout the land and six of those were Cities of Refuge.

If someone committed a murder, for example, under the Mosaic Law, they were to be put to death. Exodus 21:14. But if it was an unintentional or accidental death, he could flee to a City of Refuge and be safe from his avenger until a trial was held to determine his guilt or innocence. As long as he stayed in the City of Refuge, no one could touch him. If he left the city for any reason, and there were people seeking his life, he was no longer under that protection.

As a yacht owner, you can definitely earn a profit by chartering your yacht and offset your costs. Here’s the breakdown:

The price of the charter depends on the market, the size, model, condition of your boat, the number of cabins, etc. The expenses which you must take into account as the boat owner include: 

• registration
• ship maintenance
• crew salaries
• charter equipment (water toys, bed linen, towels, shampoos, etc.)

How many weeks can I charter my yacht?

For luxury yachts, you can expect your yacht to be booked for a minimum of 6-12 weeks a year, depending on the season.

The average number of weeks is higher for chartering sailboats and catamarans, usually about 14-20 weeks.

What to expect of a yacht charter management company? 

With the right agency for yacht charter management , you can reap all the benefits of chartering your own yacht - offset operational costs, keep your crew sharp and your boat in top shape, as well as build a brand reputation. 

The role of such a company is to provide consulting, support and help you achieve maximum booking through thoughtful promotion. 

Here’s how that works in the example of Magnum:

Once a yacht owner decides to partner with our agency, we both sign the Central Booking Agreement. It states the rights and obligations of the owner, as well as the rights and obligations of us as a central agency. In it we also define the price list according to which the charter service for a particular vessel will be charged. 

The agreement can be signed for a definite period (1 year) or for an indefinite period and can be terminated via written notice (from either party).

Bookings, promotion & payments

Once we sign the Central Booking Agreement with the boat owner, we focus all our efforts on promotion and positioning the boat on the market. It takes some time for the yacht to become "recognized" on the market but since we have access to a large global booking system through which we receive inquiries (YACHTFOLIO), this process doesn’t take too long.

After receiving an inquiry from a potential client, we send them a detailed offer with the price and presentation materials (brochure, crew profile, etc.), to give them a complete and better impression of the yacht. If the client confirms the booking, we sign the MYBA contract. The contract is signed by all the parties involved in the booking process - the client (charterer), broker, stakeholder and the yacht owner. 

Payment to the yacht owner is made in such a way that half of the amount to be paid to the owner is paid on the day of the boarding, and the remaining amount on the day of unloading (or the first working day, if unloading day is during the weekend).

The responsibilities of the yacht owner 

If you decide to charter your yacht, here’s what’s expected of you as the owner:

• During the term of the Central Booking Agreement, the yacht owner is not allowed to enter a business partnership with another yacht charter agency and is obliged to refer all agents who may contact him to his central agent.   
• The yacht owner mustn’t promote his yacht independently or without the consent of his central agent.  
• The owner must deliver professional photographs of the boat to the agency.   
• The owner is obliged to invoice his charters in accordance with the regulations of the Republic of Croatia.  
• The yacht owner is obliged to ensure the registration of the vessel and to have valid insurance policies.  
• The yacht owner must provide other documentation and take actions that precede the provision of accommodation services on board.  
• The yacht owner is obliged to provide an adequate crew in accordance with the size of the boat and the uniforms for all crew members.  
• The yacht owner is obliged to sign the charter agreements on time and report any problems or delays to the agency as soon as possible.  
• The boat must be adequately prepared for chartering - that includes cleaning, equipment procurement, as well as accommodation, uniforms & training for the crew members.  
• The yacht owner must have a registered company and be able to issue invoices.

A Beginner’s Guide to Chartering a Yacht

With the pandemic driving a boom in superyacht charters , more and more people are taking to the water for their first yachting experience. But while some superyachts can cost more than a million a week to charter, you don’t need to outlay seven figures for your own yachting vacation.

Wondering what else you need to know before stepping on board for the very first time? We’ve turned to experts in the yachting industry for their insider intel on how to charter a yacht like a pro—from how much it will run you, to where to go, and well beyond. Read on.

Do I need a charter broker, and how do I find one?

It’s a charter broker’s job to match you with the right yacht and crew—and then take the lead in planning the entire experience. Professional bodies such as MYBA The Worldwide Yachting Association act as a database of industry-recognized professionals. But the best source for finding a charter broker is often your own network. “Building up a relationship with a charter broker is very important,” says Jacqui Lockhart, a Monaco-based broker at Camper & Nicholsons International . “If possible, look for a recommendation from a friend.”

Once you’ve found the right broker, communication with them will be key. “Take the time to be as detailed with your preferences, such as dietary requirements, likes and dislikes, and preferred activities, as possible,” says London-based broker Charles Crane of Edmiston . “This will give us and the crew the best information to make the charter a success and tailored to perfection.”

How much should I be prepared to spend?

“The entry point is around $40,000 for a week on a yacht 82-feet upwards that can sleep six people," says Lockhart. What can take first time charterers by surprise is that this isn’t an all-inclusive figure. “The charter fee covers the hire, the crew, the insurance—everything that’s linked to the yacht,” Lockhart continues. Anything specifically for the client is extra—including food and beverages, fuel, and dockage. As a rule of thumb, budget for an extra 30 percent on top of the baseline charter figure for these extras, which goes into a fund known as the Advanced Provisioning Allowance (APA). At the end of the charter, it is also customary to tip the crew; between 10 and 20 percent of the charter fee is a guideline figure. There may also be Value Added Tax (VAT) to pay on the charter rate, depending on the country of embarkation.

At the smaller end of the charter fleet, more opportunity exists for single-cabin bookings rather than whole yacht charters. This year in the Caribbean , Sheila Ruffin of Soca Yacht Charters has launched a “Stranger on the Seas” package. Prices start at around $6,000 per person—all-inclusive—on catamarans between 48 and 60 feet. “This allows couples the opportunity to mix and mingle with other couples for an adventurous and social yacht charter on the Caribbean Sea,” says Ruffin.

What destinations are best suited to first-time charterers?

“For first-timers, I wouldn’t recommend a remote destination,” says Captain Kelly Gordon of Freddy , a 106-foot charter yacht based out of the Bahamas . “When it’s hard to get to, that eats up some of your valuable time and can also take some of the fun out of it.”

While yachts are heading towards unchartered waters such as Antarctica with increasing frequency, cruising grounds in the Mediterranean and the Caribbean are classic destinations for a reason. “For the first-time charterer in these locations, there will be more yacht options to choose from, proven cruising grounds with known and safe anchorages, well-connected and easy access hubs to ensure smooth passage to embark and disembark the vessel as well as the ability to source most provisions that guests may want,” says Crane.

The key ingredient? The crew.

Although much of the focus is on securing the right yacht, the secret to the success of a charter is its crew. “Put simply, the crew make the difference between a good charter yacht and a bad one,” says Crane. Today’s crew are increasingly versatile. “They may also be a diving or yoga instructor, personal trainer, fisherman, or sommelier,” he continues.

The crew also knows your cruising area better than anyone else. “Be sure to pick their brain on fun things to do. They often love the opportunity to come up with fun activities and games, whether for kids or adults,” says Lotte Barker-Hahlo, a London-based charter broker at Burgess .

The level of hospitality from crew on most yachts often convert first-time charters into repeat customers. “The attention to detail from the crew is unsurpassed by any other luxury holiday,” says Barker-Hahlo. “From the unpacking of your suitcase to being offered a drink before you’ve even realized you’re thirsty, it’s 24-hour care and service.”

Gordon says that much of the feedback she receives at the end of a first-time charter is why didn’t we do this earlier? “People are always surprised at how we take the time to get to know their needs before they have even arrived. We really do study those preference sheets!”

Think carefully about who else you want on board

Another important factor to a successful yacht vacation? Your fellow travelers. This is a specific type of vacation, which should narrow your list of invitees. “Strongly consider who you vacation with when chartering a yacht,” urges Ruffin. “Unlike other vacation options, yachts are very intimate and exclusive. Choose to share your water adventure with those you like and will enjoy on the water for a week or more.” Maybe, even for veteran yachties, that's the sagest advice of all.

Buying A Yacht? Advice On What To Look For When Purchasing

There simply is no greater feeling than a perfect day on the water in your very own boat or yacht. For many, boating is more than just a recreation, but a passion that every free moment revolves around. From waking up before dawn to catch bait for an incredible day of fishing to spending hours provisioning for a month long cruise up the coastline, the way every boater spends their time on the water may differ, but the water unites us all in our collective joy.

Some may ask, " Is buying a yacht a good investment? " Our answer is unequivocally, yes. Buying a yacht is not inexpensive by any means, in fact the cost of yacht ownership can easily be 10% of its value on an annual basis. The true value of a yacht is measured in experiences, time spent with family, and greatest of all, the cherished memories you will make along the way. In rare cases, some boats have improved in value depending on their sales price and what enhancements were done after purchase. These cases are not the norm. Buying a yacht is an investment in yourself, not a financial one.

If this is your first time buying a yacht, or perhaps you are moving up from a smaller boat, it's important to take some time and do a fair amount of research about what it's like to be a yacht owner. The definition of a yacht varies from person to person in regards to its size, versatility, and price. Generally speaking, you can make the case that a boat with overnight accommodations and over 40-feet in length would be classified as a yacht. At that size and above, there are different consideration to keep in perspective such as maintenance, storage, insurance, and other operating procedures. A good suggestion to follow is hire a professional, experienced yacht broker that can sit down with you and discuss your boating needs. If you're buying a boat, working with a reputable broker can save you time, money, and best of all, doesn't cost you anything.

A great first-person perspective is the "Trying Not To Sink" Youtube Channel. This couple were new to boating until their first purchase. Their video channel goes through all of their trials, tribulations, adventure, and excitement.

Decide How You Will Use Your Boat

Even before you figure out how much you want to spend on your new yacht, take some time to figure out what you want to get out of boating. Are you looking to primarily fish? If so, will you be staying inshore and need a shallow draft? Or will you be going offshore and need a more substantial boat? The same goes for day boating and overnight trips. Boats are designed and built for very specific situations and their features cater to that specific type of boating. It doesn't mean that boats can't be versatile. Many sportfish owners will also take their boat cruising with friends to the islands, for example, since it has overnight accommodations. There are several questions you will want to ask yourself such as:

• Do I want to live on my boat or is this purely for recreation?
• Do I have a desire to use this boat for business? (Some owners put their yachts into a charter program allowing them to recoup some expenses.)
• Are you going to handle the boat yourself? Or do you need to hire a captain?
• Where do you plan to cruise in the future? Remember your confidence will build with time and you will want to venture to more distant places.
• How many guests can you see yourself bringing out on your boat or yacht?

Boaters wanting to cruise the Great Loop are a perfect example of needing to choose the right boat for your plans as there are requirements for provisioning, suitable accommodations, and the height of the vessel must be able to clear certain bridges. This is when the services of a yacht broker can really come in handy with your decision making process and save you from making the wrong decision.

Choosing A Budget

Once you've determined how you want to spend your time boating, the next step is to figure out how much you can afford. As we mentioned before, the cost of your boat or yacht can be near 10% of its value annually, so remember to factor in operating costs like fuel, storage, and travel costs. Spend some time looking online at all of the pre-owned yachts for sale on the MLS (Like real estate, the boating industry has a MLS or Multiple Listing Service).

There are a lot of factors that should be considered when determining your budget. If you're not paying cash for your boat, there are plenty of marine-specific lenders in the industry that can get you financed. As of May 2020, interest rates are very low making it a good time to finance your boat and keep your cash in the bank. If you do plan to finance, expect to put between 20% and 40% as a down payment on a 20-year loan. In addition to the cost of the boat, you'll need to consider other costs like:

• Storage - Do you have a dock at your home? Is your boat trailerable? Or will you need to pay a marina for a full-time slip?
• Captain & Maintenance - If you're buying a yacht, hiring a yacht management company to keep it working perfectly can be a smart financial decision.
• Insurance - Make sure you choose a reputable marine insurance company that has a relationship directly with the carriers.
• Registration & Taxes - You will need to choose a state or country of residence depending on the yacht you purchase. (Ask your broker for advice!)
• Accessories - You will want to buy cool stuff for your boat. This includes new electronics, soft goods for bedrooms, water toys, and more.

There's an old saying that the word BOAT stands for "Bring Out Another Thousand". No matter if you are purchasing a 30' center-console or a 68' sportfish, there will be additional costs for upkeep and upgrades. The best advice we can offer on cost is to do your homework, set your budget, and then relax. For new boaters, you will find that the positive benefits and the experiences of boating far outweigh the financial aspects.

Research The Brand For You

At this step in the yacht buying process you should have an idea of your budget, how you plan to use your new yacht, and where you plan to keep it. Just like purchasing a new car, there are many different builders or yacht brands being sold today. Some brands cater to boaters looking for a certain price point, while others build their boat at the highest quality possible. Materials used in construction, the amount of engines and horsepower, the size of the vessel, and the appointments on board can all influence the cost. 

Some builders are still producing new boats today while others have gone out of business and only pre-owned options are left. This is where you should start deciding if you want a new boat, pre-owned boat, or custom-built boat. Each has their own pros and cons. If cost is not an important factor, it's hard to beat designing your own personal, custom yacht. Of course, this will take longer and in some cases years depending on the backlog of the factory and size of the project. Buying a new boat means it is still going to be under warranty, but the cost is higher and the customization options are limited. Purchasing a pre-owned or brokerage vessel is the most cost-effective, however there are likely going to be more service and maintenance expenses.

Unfortunately, there is really no "consumer-report" guide in the marine industry that rates yacht builders based on their performance, equipment, and value. To add a greater level of complexity to the situation, models from the same manufacturer can even vary year to year and may have a difference in quality. Factors like change of ownership, switching designers, engine brand changes, resin quality changes in construction, and even layout changes to the lower deck accommodations can alter the performance or popularity of a boat. Boat builders, like automobile companies, differ as well in their aesthetics. Some boats are sleeker and sexier for a particular look the owner wants. Others cater to owners who wish for their boats to have more socializing features on board or windows below deck that alter its exterior. This will enable you to spend time on board the yacht, speak with factory representatives, and compare options. Many boat owners will arrange to have their yacht broker walk with them around the show and discuss each different brand. This ensures that, as the buyer, you are getting the advice that's right for you. Hiring a broker that is looking out for your best interests means that he isn't compensated to sell you any one particular boat and will offer the honest feedback you need to make the right choice.

If you've never been to a boat show, the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show is an excellent one to attend. It's considered the largest boat show in the world and every major builder is in attendance. It happens every year at the end of October or beginning of November.

Negotiating The Purchase

Whether you plan to purchase a brand new yacht, build your own, or buy a used one, there will eventually be a negotiation. Trying to determine whether you are paying too much or getting your boat at a fair price can be difficult. Generally consumers will look online for comparable pre-owned boats that are close to the same year and size to see the price they are selling at. If you plan to do this research yourself and without the assistance of a yacht broker, keep in mind that condition, engine size, engine hours, accessories, layout, and other options can influence the price of a boat. Whether you are buying new or pre-owned, there's a good chance that you will be negotiating with a salesperson who's best interest is to make money for themselves and their client or company. Our best advice is to hire an experienced, professional yacht broker that will keep your best interests at heart and negotiate on your behalf. This can not only save you money in the long run, but it also alleviates the stress of the process. And best of all, the seller (or boat builder) pays your broker's commission!

Surveying Your Boat Or Yacht

Whether you are purchasing a brand new yacht or a brokerage vessel, you will need to have a survey done for the bank (if you are financing), for your marine insurance company, and for your own peace of mind. A thorough sea trial and survey can uncover problems or potential issues that weren't noticeable by the untrained eye. The results of the survey can also play a role in the final negotiation process. Buyers may want to pressure the seller to lower the selling price or fix the remaining problems before the final closing can proceed.

Finding the right marine surveyor can also be a bit daunting if you have never used on before. Your yacht broker should have connections in the area with surveyors he or she has used in the past. Resale Value & Selling Your Yacht

Can I Pilot My Own Yacht? Qualifications & Licenses

The question of “Can I pilot my own yacht” has popped up several times in the past few months.

Unfortunately, there are not many sources that could reliably tell you whether or not you can pilot your own yacht. To own a yacht is one thing, but to also operate it is another concern altogether.

Fortunately, we have come prepared and are here to show you the things you need to know and think about before actually being able to pilot your own yacht (if at all). If you would like to know more about yacht operation and piloting, then continue reading!

Is It Possible to Pilot Your Own Yacht?

The quick answer to this question is a resounding yes. It is indeed very possible to pilot your own yacht, though we don't recommend taking this step for first-time boat owners or inexperienced seafarers.

In the United States, there are no definitive rules and regulations regarding the operation or piloting of a private vessel assuming the size, weight, and other dimensions of a standard yacht. The laws vary from state to state , however, so it would be best to gather more in-depth information from your local government representatives or boating agencies to find out more. As far as we know, however, there are no licensing requirements for the operation of yachts for private use.

The key distinctions to be identified are whether the yacht is for commercial use or private use and whether the yacht will be traversing through public waters or privately-owned domains such as private lakes or beach resorts.

If a yacht is to be piloted for profit, then a license is most definitely required. If the yacht is to be used in public waters, requirements would still be based on whether the use of the yacht is commercial or private.

Important Things to Consider When Piloting Your Own Yacht

Now that we have addressed key differences in the purpose or use of a yacht in relation to piloting it, below is a list of factors you need to take into account to ensure that you are legally and safely capable of piloting your own yacht.

A few states have enacted regulations that require individuals belonging to certain age groups to have the proper training and certification before actually piloting a yacht.

If you are under the age of 18, for example, your state may require you to be assessed for pilot-worthiness. We have also found certain regulations that require aspiring pilots who were born after 1988 to register for certification.

Again, make sure to check in with your state’s rules and regulations regarding yacht navigation and operation to have a better picture of what to expect when actually riding on your privately-owned yacht.

If legal mandates do not get you, insurance providers definitely will. As is the case with every type of insurance, insurance will only be granted if certain qualifications are met. If said qualifications are not achieved, then the insurance provider may either increase the costs, fees, or premiums of the insurance agreement or deny the insurance application altogether.

If you are a relatively inexperienced boat navigator or pilot with no documentation or certification to prove your capacity to effectively manage a crew and pilot a yacht, then yacht insurance providers will most likely turn you down and deny you the insurance needed to cover your yacht.

We absolutely cannot stress enough how important insurance is, especially when it comes to yachts which are typically million-dollar investments . In this regard, we suggest looking for experienced captains and crews, at least for the first couple of months, and proceed to apply for yacht insurance alongside them and their experience.

Speaking of, experience should ultimately be the indicator of whether or not you should pilot your own boat.

We get it, you bought your yacht and you want to take care of it and cherish it like a member of the family. You might not want anyone else helping out or operating your yacht as you would like to learn and do it yourself. However, this is never a good option if you lack the required experience to pilot a boat.

If you are an experienced seafarer or boater (in other words, you travel a lot via the seas), then you are one (small) step closer to the experience required to operate a yacht.

However, the type of experience we would like to emphasize more would be experience in actually handling and operating a boat, from maintenance to check-ups to actual operation and the eventual docking. If you lack the aptitude or practice when it comes to any of the yacht-related operation maneuvers, then please look for an expert to navigate your yacht.

There are four clear and distinct categories or functions that a crew would have to fulfill when operating a yacht: deck, galley, engineering, and interior. Of the four categories, the deck crew is in charge of actually piloting and navigating the boat.

Depending on the size and sophistication of the yacht, a typical deck crew would consist of the captain, a chief officer (1st mate), a lead deckhand, and deckhands.

Each member of your crew is in charge of specific roles or functions and the orchestration or facilitation of duties and activities is managed by the yacht captain.

If you plan on piloting your own yacht, you would do better if you are guided by an experienced yacht captain and a couple of deckhands.

In terms of pricing and value, a yacht can be priced anywhere from half a million dollars to upwards of 10 million dollars.

Given this, would it really be practical to pilot it by yourself if you are not confident in your capabilities as a yacht pilot? Think about this pretty well and make sure to make the right decision without pride or ego.

Perhaps the most important thing in any mode of transportation, whether it be through land, air, or water, is the safety factor.

Speed, engine horsepower, design or style, and overall value can only mean so much when it comes to comparing them to safety. As such, you should always make it a point to prioritize safety.

In this case, the aspect of safety comes into how well you would be doing as a yacht pilot. Would you be confident in saying that you will be able to navigate the seas safely? Is it possible that safe trips would be more likely if a more experienced crew handles yacht navigation? Always prioritize safety.

Speaking of safety, you would also have to consider the passengers on board. A yacht is a sizable vessel and its function or purpose clearly entails having numerous people aboard.

It is one thing to pilot your own yacht and assume the risks all on your own if you are the only one aboard. It is a whole other story if you have other people such as friends or family relying on you to deliver them safely from point A to point B.

The size of the boat dictates how easy or challenging piloting it will be, but this comes with a lot of different perspectives.

For some, piloting larger yachts is easier because it is more stable, more visible, and easier to navigate when out in open seas.

For others, piloting smaller yachts is better because of handling and maneuverability, especially when it comes to circumstances that require you to make precise turns such as docking or traveling through narrow regions of the ocean.

If you plan to pilot your own yacht, make sure to think of size and how it would affect the journey overall.

Qualifications, Certifications, and Licenses that may be Required

As mentioned earlier, qualifications, certifications, and licenses are only absolutely required if the yacht is taking on a commercial purpose, whether it be for the transport of goods or the transport of paying passengers.

Otherwise, if the yacht will be operated and navigated for private or personal use, there are generally no legally mandated licenses required.

Despite this, we would still recommend hiring an experienced crew to aid you in piloting the yacht just to make sure that you are doing everything right. We would also suggest that you look into local boat piloting schools that actually teach you the fundamentals. These schools would usually provide you with certification after the program which is usually honored and recognized by the relevant authorities.

“Can I pilot my own yacht?” After having discussed the details, the answer is clearly yes. However, we would like to shift the question to “Should I pilot my own yacht?” to generate better reflection and analysis as to whether you should actually navigate the yacht yourself.

Again, safety and experience are things that have to be considered, so even if you could pilot your own yacht, it does not necessarily mean that you should.

Offering your luxury yacht for charter allows you to generate revenue from charters while still cruising aboard at your leisure. What are the benefits of putting your yacht on the charter market? How much does it cost? What are the steps you need to take to make it happen and ultimately successful? Northrop & Johnson’s Head of Video Production and founder of famed YouTube Channel “Yachts for Sale,” David Seal sits down with Northrop & Johnson Senior Charter Manager Adam Fitzmaurice to compile a complete guide on how to charter out your yacht.

“Why should somebody put their yacht on the charter market?” asks Seal.

“There’s a lot of benefits to chartering out your yacht,” explains Fitzmaurice. “The first one is purely a business decision to help offset some of your operating costs. From a day-to-day operational perspective, there’s a lot of advantages; boats like to be used and moved.”

In addition to keeping the gears of your yacht moving during charters, having guests aboard also will help keep the yacht’s crew sharp…and likely happy charters often mean tips. Lastly, putting your yacht on the charter market means revenue for you.

“[Speaking of crew], do you think [they] enjoy being on a charter yacht?” asks Seal

“As ex-crew myself, I loved chartering. I think you get that day-to-day challenge; you meet new people and new families. You get to see the vessel being used in a whole different way, different locations that the guests enjoy. You get to use the toys yourself and really showcase what the vessel can do,” answers Fitzmaurice.

Yacht compliance code

There are a few things to consider when deciding to set your yacht up for charter. The first step is to think about whether this is something your vessel can even do. For some yachts to charter, they must be moved into commercial status, but your broker will work with you to decide what is best for you and what is necessary to do for legal reasons. The insurance and flag state requirements can be worked out with help of the captain or yacht operations manager if the vessel has one.

“The main driving factor for the rules that you need to follow is flag state,” states Fitzmaurice. “So depending on who you’re flagged [with], the first step is to invite them aboard, and they’ll do what they a call a pre-survey. They’ll come and check on the [potential commercial compliance] the yacht…then there’s a financial evaluation. Is it worth the investment to bring the vessel up to commercial code? Once you get over the paperwork side, then you get into the fun bit.”

Success relies on the team

Once your yacht is in the clear to be used for charter, the next step is to find a charter manager. Your Northrop & Johnson charter manager is the facilitator of your yacht’s success in the charter industry. A strong relationship between you, your charter manager and the captain is paramount for a seamless charter experience.

“We’re in the relationship industry. Whatever element of yachting you’re in, it’s all about the relationship. We very much look to build a rapport with our clients. It’s essential that everyone understands successful charter management relies on a successful team. I’m a great believer in that relationship between the charter manager, the owner and the captain being very strong and understanding where we’re all coming from,” explains Fitzmaurice.

“Can you give me some examples of [what you mean when you say] understanding where we’re coming from?” asks Seal.

“If we’re trying to be a very busy charter yacht, how are we placed in the market? What’s our commercial aspiration? Are we sitting price-wise in the middle, or are we going to sit at the top? By having these high commercial aspirations, perhaps we need to be less strict on certain requirements,” answers Fitzmaurice.

Some owners are happy to have a lot of kids, even dogs on occasion, while others are more selective with who they allow onboard. Charter managers have those detailed conversations with charter yacht owners to fully understand what they want to get out of this process.

I always think if I was on vacation and I knew my children are being entertained by some fun crew, and the people serving me and around me are enjoying themselves and have a real passion for what they do, it truly is the most important element of a successful charter program,” answers Fitzmaurice.

The costs associated are quite simple: 20% commission paid on gross charter fee (15% to booking broker and 5% to charter management), upkeep of the crew [and] investing in the newest trends in toys. Apart from that, there are really no day-to-day charter management costs,” states Fitzmaurice.

Design Your Own Yacht

When designing your own yacht, you have a few options, from commissioning a custom new build yacht construction project through to refitting an existing yacht. When deciding which route to take, it’s helpful to know some of the pros and cons of each approach.

Option 1: The deluxe, no-holds-barred, fully custom yacht.

Experienced yacht owners and charterers often dream of one thing: the day they design their own yacht from scratch. A fully custom new build project is the pinnacle of the yacht ownership experience, as it allows you control over every aspect of your yacht’s design, from technical details like hull form and noise-dulling technology, right through to you designing that split-level master stateroom with private terrace or beach club with spa. Designing a fully custom yacht ensures that your yacht is the realization of every yachting dream, tailored perfectly to how you use your yacht. However when designing your own yacht, this luxurious bespoke option comes at a price, and the build time tends to be longer than with semi-custom models.

Option 2: The freedom and efficiency of a semi-custom yacht.

If you want to design your own yacht, and want to give your input in the design, but want to take advantage of efficiencies in build time and budget, you can opt for a semi-custom design, whereby the yacht’s hull form and design is part of an existing series of yachts. Building on a proven platform, the yacht owner gets to design the yacht’s décor, and depending on the builder, amend parts of the interior layout. The degree of freedom to change elements of the yacht will vary depending on which yacht builder you go with. A semi-custom yacht can have very different décor than other yachts in the same series, but the exterior design (and sometimes interior layout) is clearly part of a series, which will not appeal so much to yacht owners who crave a unique look to their yacht design.

Option 3: Buying ‘off the plan’ with a production yacht

This is the quickest and most cost effective way to buy a new yacht, as production yacht builders buy materials in bulk and put their yachts together quickly due to repetition of process. You can often purchase a yacht that is already under construction, meaning that time to delivery is slashed and you can take possession of your yacht much sooner than if you buy a custom yacht. This option has a lot less room for owner input on design, although some décor choices are normally left open.

Option 4: Refit an existing yacht

If you’re not in the mood to wait for several years for a brand new yacht to be delivered, refitting an existing yacht is an excellent option that can dramatically change the look of your yacht, while also providing the opportunity to update the engineering and onboard systems. A quality refit with a great design can deliver a ‘like-new’ yacht, and will normally significantly add to the resale value and charter potential of your yacht. However, major yard periods run the risk of going over time and over budget, so planning your yard period well is imperative.

Can I Drive My Yacht Anywhere In The World?

Yachts have always been popular, but their appeal skyrocketed during and after the pandemic. Remote jobs have also made it easier for people to merge leisure and work, with some opting for long-term engagements with yacht rental companies, like Cabo yacht rental company .

You can drive your yacht anywhere in the world if your yacht is the right size (30 – 45 feet long) to handle high waves and with adequate space for food, water, and personal items. You also need proof of yacht ownership, and visas for destinations you will be making stops.

The size of the yacht is critical. If it is too small, it may not have sufficient space for the necessities. If it is too big (over 50ft long), you’ll need an entire crew to run it seamlessly. 

What You Need To Drive A Yacht Across The World

A yacht gives you the freedom to explore the waters, and you may be tempted to visit different countries. However, before you leave, you need to ensure you will be safe and that you have all the supplies you will need during your journey. 

Here are some of the things you’ll need to drive a yacht worldwide.

• A recognized license to drive a yacht . This is usually a requirement if you are renting a yacht. It may not be an issue if the yacht is yours. However, you need to find out what the countries you’ll visit expect. Most countries accept ICC (the International Certificate of Competency License) and SLC (the International Sailing License and Credentials). Find out what licenses are required in the countries you intend to visit before you depart.
• A suitable yacht . Size is the first thing that comes to mind, and the recommended yacht is 30 – 45 feet long. This doesn’t mean smaller yachts won’t work because the smallest boat to ever go across the globe was 21 feet. However, larger yachts are more comfortable, safer, faster, and have adequate storage space. The downside is your trip will be more expensive. 
• Enough funds . Traveling on your yacht can be costly, depending on your destination. Besides the money you need for food and fuel, you also need to know how much you’ll need for yacht permit fees, mooring fees, visa fees, and maintenance fees. 
• Extra fuel . The amount of fuel you need for your journey will depend on the distance you’ll cover before you get to the next port. You also need to consider the size of the boat, the speed you’ll be traveling, and the power you’ll be using. 

Besides the above, you also need to ensure you are physically and mentally prepared. You need to have a physical check to ensure you are healthy. You don’t want to risk getting sick in the middle of your journey, with no access to medical services.

Ensure you have all the medication you need for your entire journey, or enough to last you until you get to a port. 

You also need to prepare yourself mentally, especially if you’re not used to living on a yacht. While living on a yacht, you will need to be prepared for living in  a smaller space and you may lose some of your privacy, especially if you have several people on board. 

It may take some time, but once you’re psychologically prepared, you’ll adjust fairly quickly. The journey will also be seamless if you have all the necessary documentation for the countries you wish to visit as well as enough food and supplies needed for everyone on the voyage.
