Royal Huisman

UNVEILING THE WORLD’S LARGEST TRUE SPORTFISH YACHT

…for the first time since contracts were signed at the end of last year. At 52m / 171ft this ground-breaking creation will be, by some distance, the largest, most luxurious and individual true sportfish yacht in the world.

Vripack Yacht Design is responsible for the exterior and interior design and naval architecture of this highly prestigious project, in close collaboration with Royal Huisman – considered to be the only shipyard capable of the engineering and production of this unique superyacht. The project is managed by Aqua Marine representing the Owner’s team, working closely with Bush & Noble and Hampshire Marine as technical managers in a close collaboration to deliver an exceptional project.

The yacht’s purposeful lines sweep dramatically aft from her distinctive long and sleek bow, through six towering decks to the stylish downward arc of her stern profile. Here is a unique vessel that effortlessly blends the ultimate sports fishing experience with genuine superyacht scale, comfort and refinement. Where else in superyachting might you find a sky lounge that offers the extraordinary “theatre” of spectacular fish catches by day and the relaxed ambience and stunning outlook of a boutique hotel penthouse by night?

Designed for an experienced owner who is passionate about fishing, Project 406 will be immaculately and extensively fitted out – both for high end sportfishing and for luxurious living. Her Alustar® aluminium hull and superstructure offer strength and resilience as well as the lighter weight that facilitates smooth and efficient passages from berth to fishing grounds.

Sport fishing has attracted many new owners in recent decades, with larger boats growing to around 30m / 100ft in length and a handful exceeding 40m / 131ft. Against this backdrop, Project 406’s 52m / 171ft is a serious step up, involving significant design and engineering challenges for her designers and builders at Vripack and Royal Huisman. It is, of course, a challenge that both are keen to take on.

world's largest sport fishing yacht

Royal Huisman CEO Jan Timmerman commented: “It is well known that the Royal Huisman team likes nothing better than the opportunity to solve fresh engineering challenges – especially if they come in the shape of a unique project concept. The world’s first true sportfish superyacht is a very exciting order and we are delighted to be unveiling it as we prepare to launch another highly distinctive motor yacht – the 58.5m / 192ft sub 500GT Phi. It is good to know that our reputation as the home of the world’s finest sailing yachts is now expanding to embrace the world’s most distinctive motor yachts.”

Sportfishing success requires passion, experience, and know-how as well as sophisticated onboard facilities and equipment. It is a global pursuit, focused on the larger predatory fish of the open seas, such as swordfish and marlin, that can be found in tropical waters all around the world. Project 406 will be brilliantly equipped to explore this fascinating seascape more than any sportfish yacht before her.

“This is an exceptional brief,”  notes Vripack Co-Creative Director Bart M. Bouwhuis. “And the result is an exceptional boat. Project 406 is a sportfisher on steroids. It has the true proportions and long flaring bow of a typical American sportfish boat paired with the harmonious feel of a luxurious superyacht. It’s a supersized model with super chic curves, realised on a grand scale.

No further details of this exciting project are currently available, but the joint team is looking forward to providing you with updates as the project progresses.

THE THEATRE OF THE OCEAN

Most “yachties” will be familiar with the excitement of landing a large ocean-going fish when on passage. The ‘what have we got?’ moment when the rod tip bends and line is dragged off the reel, the intake of breath as the fish breaks the surface to reveal its type and size, the tense thrill as it is carefully manoeuvred aboard (or the anti-climax as it breaks away!) and, finally, the anticipation of the wonders the chef will create tonight with the sea’s finest fresh offering. For sportfishing enthusiasts, the emotions are similar – only much, much more passionate!

Unique Motoryachts by Royal Huisman

Royal Huisman’s reputation has been largely built on a superlative portfolio of thirty-plus low-profile sailing superyachts. From classic to contemporary, from 30m to 90m+ / 100ft to 300ft+, every one is unique, tailor-made. Yet the legendary passion for perfection, expertise, quality, experience, flexibility and continuous innovation behind these projects is not limited to sailing yachts.

Just take a look at project 403, PHI, and our current motoryacht project 406, a unique 52m / 171ft sportfish yacht that will become the largest of its kind in the world (as presented in the main article). The individual aspirations and challenges of each of these projects were seen to be well outside the comfort zone by some yards. With the benefit of expert advice, each of these owners brought their highly distinctive individual projects to Royal Huisman, where fresh opportunities for creative problem-solving and innovation were enthusiastically welcomed. Royal Huisman's 171-foot Sportfishing Superyacht

“Project 406 is a sportfishing machine on steroids,” Vripack co-creative director Bart M. Bouwhuis told Robb Report in 2021 as the project became publicly known. “It has the proportions of a typical American sportfishing yacht, with a long, flaring bow and open foredeck, and raked-back superstructure. It’s just bigger in every way. She’ll set a new benchmark in the world of big-game fishing boats.” The boat will include a varnished-wood fighting chair in the cockpit.

The bow will have a large sun-lounge area, while its fourth-deck sky lounge will be a “theater” for watching the sportfishing action. To keep the vessel as lightweight as possible, the hull and superstructure will be made of Alustar aluminum, a strong, high-tensile alloy. Bouwhuis would not reveal the yacht’s power, though he used the word “huge” in the conversation. “You can’t fool nature if you want a 171-foot boat to go this fast,” he says. “It will have significant horsepower.”

Royal Huisman Project 406 sportfisher

World's largest sportfish Special One delivered

The 52-metre Royal Huisman sportfisher Special One has now been delivered.

The largest sportfisher yacht in the world, Special One was last sighted on her sea trials in late April 2024. The superyacht has been described as a "sportfisher on steroids" and was commissioned by an experienced yachtsman and passionate fisherman.

"The individual aspirations and challenges of [this project] were well outside the comfort zone of other yards," said Royal Huisman CEO Jan Timmerman. " Special One showcases our ability to create custom solutions that perfectly align with our client's vision. We are excited to see her embark on her journey and provide unforgettable experiences to her owner: the ultimate expression of personal freedom."

Special One is designed by Dutch studio Vripack and is characterised by a long bow, high bulwarks and a low and uncluttered fishing cockpit aft. She has an all-alumininum Alustar® superstructure with a towering profile that accommodates six decks, fitted out "for both high-end sportsfishing and luxurious living".

Vripack is also responsible for the yacht's interior, which is yet to be revealed. The aluminium yacht is fitted with equipment geared towards hunting larger predatory fish, such as swordfish and marlin. The tower offers a viewing platform to the dedicated fishing area aft and, at night, the yacht will be illuminated by laser-powered exterior lighting.

Speaking more broadly about the project, Timmerman said: "It is well known that the Royal Huisman team likes nothing better than the opportunity to solve fresh engineering challenges – especially if they come in the shape of a unique project concept."

To bring such a unique design to life, Royal Huisman teamed up with the owner's representative and other team members. This includes Bush & Noble for expertise on sportfishing and classic yacht forms and Hampshire Marine for the day-to-day technical aspects at the shipyard.

"This is an exceptional brief," added Vripack co-creative director Bart M Bouwhuis. "And the result is an exceptional boat. It has the true proportions and long flaring bow of a typical American sportfish boat paired with the harmonious feel of a luxurious superyacht. It’s a supersized model with super chic curves, realised on a grand scale."

This follows the news that Royal Huisman is to build an 81-metre sailing yacht, codenamed Noir. She will rank among the 10 largest sailing yachts in the world once delivered.

World’s Largest Sport-Fish Superyacht

Royal Huisman Project 406

Talk about an understatement. As construction progressed on the 171-foot Project 406 at Royal Huisman in the Netherlands, the Dutch firm Vripack—which handled interior and exterior styling, as well as naval architecture—noted that “with her six towering decks, Project 406 will cut a unique profile on the water.”

Now that the yacht is launched, it’s safe to say this vessel has left even the most jaded of jaws dropping all around the world. Project 406 is billed as not only the largest, but also the most luxurious true sport-fish yacht ever constructed. Royal Huisman says the vessel belongs to “an experienced owner who is passionate about fishing. She is a unique vessel in so many respects.”

To be sure, Project 406 is not the largest yacht that Royal Huisman has turned out in recent years. In 2023, the yard delivered the 196-foot sailing yacht Sarissa , while in 2021, it delivered the 192-foot Phi . Currently under construction are the 212-foot ketch Aquarius II for repeat clients, along with Project 410, which will be a 280-foot Mani Frers design and, reportedly, the world’s largest sloop.

And of course, there are even larger motoryachts out there on the world’s waters, up to and including the 533-foot Blohm+Voss Eclipse and the 590-foot Lürssen Azzam .

Royal Huisman Project 406

Even still, the sight of such a big sport-fish yacht is staggering. Trying to imagine being up so high, looking down at the fish-fighting action, is an exercise in pure thrills. As Royal Huisman puts it: “The high tower offers outstanding views with a downward angle on the water for specialized fishing. Apart from its practical function, the tower also offers a superb viewing platform for guests, who can follow all the action below. Project 406 effortlessly blends the ultimate sport-fishing experience with genuine superyacht scale, comfort and refinement.”

The shipyard also says that more than 350 individuals contributed to the yacht’s creation. They included the owner’s representative, Pascarelli Consulting, working with Bush & Noble and Hampshire Marine.

So far, the yard is remaining mum on other details. We can report that the hull and superstructure are Alustar aluminum, and we look forward to getting a first peek at what’s going on behind all that glazing. If the interior is even half as impressive as the exterior, we’ll be picking our jaws up from the floor again.

Royal Huisman Unveils World's Largest Sportfish Yacht

By Jenna Mehdi

In collaboration with Vripack, Royal Huisman has for the first time unveiled renderings of Project 406 after contracts were signed at the end of last year. At 52m / 171 ft, the all-Dutch project will become the world’s largest sportfish yacht by some degree.

The project’s naval architecture and design will be penned inside and out by the talented team at Vripack. Aqua Marine represents the owner’s team for the project, working closely with Bush & Noble and Hampshire Marine on the technical management side.

The groundbreaking new yacht is characterised by sweeping, purposeful lines creating a dramatic link from aft to bow. Six towering decks are stacked in a cascading style to form a surprisingly streamlined appearance. Blending her owner’s competing passions for sportfishing and unrivalled luxury, this 52m is certainly one of the more unusual briefs to come across the desks of the joint team.

“This is an exceptional brief, ” comments Vripack Co-Creative Director Bart M. Bouwhuis. “And the result is an exceptional boat. Project 406 is a sportfisher on steroids. It has the true proportions and long flaring bow of a typical American sportfish boat paired with the harmonious feel of a luxurious superyacht. It’s a supersized model with super chic curves, realised on a grand scale.”

Like the larger yachting industry, sportfish yachts have been steadily increasing in size over the years with a handful of 40m+ builds. At 52m, Project 406 will be the largest of her kind by some way. Her skylounge has been designed as a ‘theatre’ to watch remarkable fish catches by day, to be transformed into a penthouse-style space for relaxation by night.

Project 406 is to be built with an Alustar® aluminium hull and superstructure, offering robust seafaring coupled with lighter weight for smooth and efficient passages from berth to fishing grounds.

Of course, with new grounds comes new challenges for the build team. Royal Huisman CEO Jan Timmerman explained why the Dutch yard is so well-equipped to take on the challenge.

“ The world’s first true sportfish superyacht is a very exciting order and we are delighted to be unveiling it as we prepare to launch another highly distinctive motor yacht – the 58.5m / 192ft sub 500GT Phi,” Jan says. “ It is good to know that our reputation as the home of the world’s finest sailing yachts is now expanding to embrace the world’s most distinctive motor yachts.”

More and more owners are enjoying the global pursuit of sportfishing, which focuses on the larger predatory fish of the open seas - such as swordfish and marlin - typically found in tropical waters.

The activity stems from the late nineteenth century, when the invention of the first motor boat allowed for open water sportfishing.

"It’s a supersized model with super chic curves, realised on a grand scale." Vripack Co-Creative Director Bart M. Bouwhuis

The 10 Biggest Sportfish Yachts Ever Built

Check out the largest sportfish yachts on the water..

The largest sportfish yachts are designed for luxurious multi-day outings with family or friends, as well as heading far offshore in search of the biggest fish in the deepest waters. Sportfish yachts are powerboats built to arrive at fishing grounds fast, with a hull design capable of cruising through any sea conditions. Most are equipped with tournament fishing options such as tuna towers, kill boxes, large tackling stations, ice makers, and live bait wells. Here are 10 of the biggest sportfish yachts ever built. These fishing boats are very impressive.

1. 144′ Trinity 1998 | MARLENA

10 Biggest Sportfish Yachts

At the time of her delivery in 1998 by Trinity Yachts , MARLENA was the largest sportfish yacht in the world at 126 feet. In 2013, she was purchased by an owner who lengthened her to her current length of 144 feet. She was sold again and is undergoing a refit including a complete repower.

2. 138’ McMullen & Wing 2003 | MEA CULPA

10 Biggest Sportfish Yachts

When Jack Sarin was tasked with designing MEA CULPA, he was given the challenge of designing a boat that could fish in the most remote corners of the world but hold her own in the stylish ports of the Caribbean and the Mediterranean . With no expense spared in terms of quality and comfort and decked out with an impressive array of fishing equipment, she manages to achieve both and has fished and cruised all over the world.

3. 128′ Heesen 1999 | RED SAPPHIRE

10 Biggest Sportfish Yachts

Capable of 34 knots, RED SAPPHIRE is a Heesen 3900 sportfishing yacht built to ABS class. She features a semi-displacement aluminum hull and aluminum superstructure, with teak decks. Equipped with an ultra-modern stabilization system, she’s powered by 2 MTU 16V4000 M90 3,644hp diesel engines and propelled by her twin screws propellers. Heesen also built OBSESSIONAS, a 125-foot sportfish in 1996, and KARYATIS, a 105-foot sportfish in 2005.

4. 122’ Trinity | MARY P

10 Biggest Sportfish Yachts

MARY P was the first hull built and launched by the Trinity Yachts’ New Orleans shipyard after its post-Katrina reopening of that shipyard on July 5, 2006. With naval architecture by Doug Sharp of Sharp Designs, many other unique details enhance her role as a sportfishing yacht, such as a fully automated anchor deployment and retrieval system, specially designed underwater lighting to enhance her performance when night fishing, and a flybridge that maintains a good line of sight for the captain.

5. 119’ Denison 1991 | PHARAOH

10 Biggest Sportfish Yachts

With naval architecture by Joe Langlois, PHARAOH, now SEACALL, is considered the queen of tournament sports fishing and angling. The sportfish motor yacht features four double staterooms, 5 heads, a spacious salon and galley, extensive electronics, and twin 1960hp MTU diesel engines. She was refit in 2005.

6. 114′ Logos Marine 2008 | SEYA

10 Biggest Sportfish Yachts

SEYA raises the question — at what point does a yacht stop being a sportfish and instead becomes a superyacht with a fishing cockpit? She was built in 2008 for a Middle Eastern client who specifically requested a cold-molded yacht due to his positive experience with this sturdy material. Logos’ 105-foot custom sportfish is also built with the same cold-molded, laminated epoxy wood with a fiberglass/epoxy skin.

7. 112’ Hakvoort 1988 | ACE OF DIAMONDS

10 Biggest Sportfish Yachts

ACE OF DIAMONDS (formerly SEA EAGLE) was custom built by Hakvoort Shipyard . This luxury sportfish vessel’s sophisticated exterior design and engineering are the work of Pieter Beeldsnijder Design. She was last refitted in 2005.

8. 108′ Burger 2001 | SARAH BETH

10 Biggest Sportfish Yachts

Few sportfishing yachts have what it takes to make long passages to remote fishing locations with both speed and comfort. One that does is the 108’ Burger SARAH BETH. Powered by a pair of Detroit Diesel MTU 12V4000s, this sportfish exploration yacht has an 8,025-gallon fuel capacity can cruise at 24 knots, and tops out at 28 knots.

9. 105′ Jim Smith Boats | MARLENA

10 Biggest Sportfish Yachts

The latest masterwork by Jim Smith Tournament Boats of Stuart, Florida, MARLENA was designed and built for Sam Gershowitz, owner of Star Island Yacht Club in Montauk, New York. She is the largest boat built by Jim Smith Boats.

10. 105′ Broward 2002 | ODYSSEY

10 Biggest Sportfish Yachts

Whale capsizes fishing boat off New Hampshire coast

A whale has surfaced under a fishing boat in New Hampshire, capsizing the vessel and sending two men into the water.

The fishing vessel occupants are unharmed after being rescued by two teenagers in another boat.

What's next?

Sara Morris of the University of New Hampshire Shoals Marine Laboratory has encouraged boaters to keep their distance from whales.

Two occupants of a fishing vessel are unharmed after a whale surfaced under their boat, capsizing it off the New Hampshire shore.

The US Coast Guard said on social media platform X it received a mayday call on Tuesday stating a seven-metre centre-console boat turned over near Odiorne Point State Park because of a whale breach.

"The occupants were ejected from the vessel as the boat capsized," the Coast Guard posted.

"A good Samaritan recovered both individuals from the water. No injuries were reported."

A video taken by 16-year-old Colin Yager shows the whale breaching, propelling fish out of the water.

As the animal's mouth closes, it flops over onto the rear of the nearby fishing boat with two men aboard.

One of the men jumps and the other is thrown overboard as their boat rolls.

A 'miracle' no one was injured

Gregg Paquette and Ryland Kenney told Boston news station WCVB they were on the boat when the whale turned it over.

"We didn't see him for a couple of minutes, and then the next thing we knew, he popped up and landed right on the transom of the boat," Mr Paquette said.

"When I turned, the whale's head was already landing on the engine … So when I saw that, then all of a sudden, I look down, the boat is pitching up, the transom is going down into the water."

"I just looked up and just kind of saw the boat tipping, and I said, 'The only way to avoid this is to just kind of jump horizontally away,'" Mr Kenney added.

"Everything seemed like in slow motion. It was really weird."

"Everyone was like, 'Oh, it was eight seconds. How'd you move so fast?' But it was almost slow motion, like a movie."

They said the boy who took the video and his brother pulled them out of the water afterwards.

"Truly grateful to them," Mr Paquette said.

"They were making the video, dropped everything, zoomed right over and plucked us out."

"It's kind of a miracle that I'm alive," Mr Kenney said.

"I don't know what was going through my head. Just, kind of, survival."

Wyatt Yager and his brother Colin told the news station they were fishing about 1.6 kilometres off the New Hampshire coast when they saw the whale approaching and took out a camera.

"I saw it go up so I was just lucky enough to be facing the right direction," Colin Yager said.

"I saw it come up and I was just like, 'Oh, it's going to hit the boat,' and then it kind of started to flip," his brother Wyatt added.

Boaters encouraged to keep their distance

A blonde boy in a blue hoodie looks on as a whale tips over a fishing boat.

The boat crew from Station Portsmouth said the whale appeared not to be injured.

Sara Morris of the University of New Hampshire Shoals Marine Laboratory told WCVB the whale was likely lunge feeding when it rolled the boat over.

"I think one of the key things is that when whales are sighted to encourage boaters to keep their distance," she said.

"The whales are moving around underwater and coming up, potentially in an area different from where they went down, and we want to give them as much leeway as we possibly can to avoid a situation like what you see here."

The incident was reported to the Center of Coastal Studies Marine Animal Hotline and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The vessel has also been salvaged.
