In this collection of center console boats, we will present center console boats suitable for day boating, high-performance boating, and fishing and even some that can serve as overnighters (or more). All of the boats here are no more than 25 feet long.

This 23’7” x 8’10” inch traditional center console offers an extra wide beam along with a host of fishing features and a choice of single or twin outboards. Small Center Console Boats for Families/Everyday Boating

“Family boat” is a term fraught with peril, since different families have different expectations. Also, options and customizations allow boat buyers to make boats more closely match their boating goals. For our purposes, a small family center console measures 25 feet long or less and retains the fishing capability that the genre was founded upon. But, a family center console must prioritize seating and other comfort features as a matter of design, and as offered by the boatbuilder.

Scout: 260 LXF

Standard side boarding door, killer forward lounge and standard SeaKeeper stabilizer.

At 26’0” by 8’11, this boat is the longest on our list. But it is so well laid out and equipped as a family center console that we had to include it. The side boarding door provides easy egress for boarding and entertaining dockside. (And it’s perfect for swimming, since it incorporates a ladder. ( There’s also a transom door and ladder.) The 260 LXF’s forward lounge is sized and appointed like that found aboard larger boats. Family and friends can recline in comfort there or in the forward seating with removable backrests. The standard SeaKeeper stabilizer keeps the boat from rocking, that’s especially important for new boaters or guests you may have aboard for the day. The head compartment is spacious and comfortable and comes with a porcelain commode. The T-top looks great, provides great sun protection, and plenty of canvas options are available to keep the weather out.

Grady-White 251 CE

Standard head, standard bow and transom seats and a patented hull design.

The 24’7” by 8’6” 251 Coastal Explorer offers the lower freeboard of an inshore boat, making access to the water easier, as well as granting the feeling of being open and part of the environment. Certainly, with locking rod storage, a big livewell and more, it fishes like a pro. And, its unique SeaV² hull can handle choppy open waters. But, it offers numerous features beyond these that make it a good multi-purpose boat. Included are a head area inside the console, bow and transom boarding ladders, a freshwater shower, bow seating with folding backrests, an aft bench, eight drink holders and more. Order the optional bow table, bow shade and ski arch to make the 251 CE a top tier angling-watersports-entertainer. It’s beam width is trailerable without need of a permit.

Blackfin 252CC

Gets you there in style and with opulent fishability .

The 24’6” by 8’10 Blackfin 252 CC offers a full-on rigging station, fiberglass T-top and plenty of rod storage and other accouterments that make it a fantastic fishing boat. In addition, it offers bow seating with removable backrests, a flip-down transom bench, console seat and lean post. All seating is upholstered in plush, quilted, multi-tone vinyl that is comfortable and looks great, but also provides excellent durability. Inside the console, families will find a head compartment housing a porta pottie with deck pumpout fitting. A transom door provides access to the swim platform with ladder. A freshwater shower, bow and transom sun shades and a cockpit table can all be added optionally to max-out the 252 CC’s family versatility.

Best Affordable Center Console Boats

Though hardly any boat can be considered inexpensive these days there are boats on offer that deliver solid construction, a utilitarian standard features set and come in at a price less than many of the other boats in their size and type class. Often, such boats offer items such as a T-top. Here is a group of nominally 24-foot-long center consoles priced at $125,00 or less.

Parker 2400CC

Strong and seaworthy.

The 24’0” by 8’6” Parker 2400CC offers a deep-V hull and rugged construction to soften the chop and make long days—and including long runs—comfortably doable. It comes with four rod holders, a large mounting flat for electronics at the helm as wheel as standard hydraulic steering. Bow cushions are standard  but you need to order the backrests if you want to create forward-facing seating. You’ll need to order an optional T-top or Bimini, if you would like the shade provided by either. And, Parker offers a full suite of optional fishing gear from which you can pick and choose. Its offered with single Yamaha engines. The 250 keeps the base boat under our $125,000 affordability limit, as of the time of writing. (Order the 300 and its just a hair more, though).

Carolina Skiff E24 DLX CC

The most boat length for the money.

Make no mistake: the 24’1 x 7’9” Carolina Skiff E24 DLX CC rides a flat-bottom hull that will not deliver a smooth ride in choppy waters. That said, it can navigate in super shallow water due to the minimal draft that hull affords, plus it’s a super stable boat. Standards include a console with stainless steel steering wheel and quick disconnect windshield. It comes with a swim platform, a swingback stainless steel seat and a 12-gallon portable fuel tank and LED bow and stern lights. Options include a bow seat, a T-top or  a Bimini top and more. Power rating is for a single outboard up to 150-hp. You’ll have to visit a dealer for a price, but we are confident you can purchase this boat for well below the others on the list.

Release 240R

Overbuilt and underpriced.

The Release 240R measures 24’0” x 8’9” and can be powered by twin 150 outboards and still be priced under our target $125,000 affordability level for a 24-foot center console. Order it with a single 250- or 300-hp engine and it easily fills the affordability bill.  You will have to pay optionally for such things as hull color, a transom shower, and a bow filler and cushion. However, it offers a long list of standards, including hardtop T-top, a Simrad electronics package, livewell and raw water washdown and a head with porta-pottie. It Is wider than many boats this length, and so may require a permit to trailer it. A slighly more expensive “RX” model comes with forward seating.

Bayliner Trophy T24 CC

A deep-V that doesn’t require deep pockets.

The 24’ 0” by 8’6” T24 CC combines rugged fishability, loads of storage and cruising comfort. It rides on a 23-degree deep V that really cuts through the chop. Standards include a canvas T-top (optional hardtop available), bow seat cushions with removable backrests, a folding transom bench and hydraulic steering. Fishing standards include a livewell, a bait well and two large fishboxes, plus plenty of rod storage. An optional  9-inch Simrad multifunction display, wired for Vessel View mobile, provides engine monitoring. Other options include a porta-pottie for the head compartment and your choice of nine hull colors. It is rated for engines up to 300-hp and the base engine of this readily trailerable boat is a 225-hp Mercury. At time of writing, the T24CC starts at about $68,000 with a 225.

Pros & Cons of Small Center Console Boats

As with any boat purchase, there will be pros and cons to buying a center console of the size discussed here. We’ve tried to list these for your consideration since different boaters will have different use cases, rather than hard and fast rules. 

Advantages:

• Boats this size are trailerable. Even for those wider than the 8’6” “ norm” for trailerability, a pickup truck or large SUV can tow these boats. That opens up more possibilities for cruising and fishing. Trailerability is also a hedge against marina and boatyard rates. 
• Boats in this size range can deliver excellent performance (in many cases) with just  single engine. That makes them cheaper to buy, cheaper to run, and cheaper and easier to maintain compared to multi-engine boats. 
• Like the baby bears’s porridge, boats this size are, “ just right” for many boaters. Big enough to tale the whole family aboard or to venture offshore, boats this size can be easily operated in  water less than three-feet deep, , which is handy for beaching or bay fishing. 

Considerations:

• Center console boats this size are not large enough to incorporate sleeping facilities. You’d need to select a CC longer than 30-feet LOA –maybe even 35-feet–to get an overnight cabin in the console 
• While boats this size are surprisingly able at sea, and can take you safely offshore, they are not large boats. Even more special attention must be paid to weather, maintenance, preparation, your own experience, and the experience of the crew you have with you before you venture over the horizon. 
• Sometimes a smaller boat is just better, depending upon your situation. Perhaps you are the only family member who will go boating? Or, maybe, you must have a boat that fits stored in a garage. Or, maybe, you only venture on small bodies of water where small size, and shallow draft can be advantages. Or…well, you get the picture.

Small center console boats those under 25-feet, are very popular with boat buyers. Such boats have much to offer. The following FAQs paint a picture of why that might be. 

Are smaller center console boats more affordable?

Yes, smaller center consoles are more affordable. Besides the smaller size, many, if not most, require only a single engine for good performance.

How many passengers can a 25ft center console boat hold?

The person’s capacity of a 25-foot center console will vary by a formula that includes the boat’s dimensions and horsepower. In general, a 25-foot center console may be rated for up to 10 or maybe 12 people. Know that maximum ratings are for slow speeds on calm waters. Besides, there is no room for comfort or fishing aboard a 25-foot boat if 10 people are aboard

What are the best center console brands and manufacturers?

“Best” is tough to define, as the needs of boaters vary. There is a best boat for every boater but no overall best boat. Some popular brand names include Bayliner, Blackfin,  Boston Whaler , Carolina Skiff, Cobia,  Grady-White , Regulator, and Scout Boats. 

Can you run a small center console boat on a lake?

Of course, you can run a small center console on a lake. Though perceived as coastal boats, where more of them are in use, more and more inland boaters now use center console boats.

What kind of engines power a 25ft center console boat?

A 25-foot center console will invariably feature outboard power. This can be in either a single or twin engine format. A 150-hp motor might be adequate for a light flat-bottomed model whereas twin 300-hp engines may be appropriate for heavier, deep-v boats. 

How many engines can a 25-foot center console boat have?

A 25-foot center console may have as many as two engines. However, many center consoles run great with a single engine. 

How fast can most small center console boats go?

On the trailer or on the water? Just kidding. The speed of a 25-foot center console will depend upon the power chosen, whether there is a T-top or not and how many people are being carried aboard. That being said 40-mph is probably an expected average top speed, with some models capable of speeds in the low 50-mph range.

Are small center console boats safe for offshore fishing?

Yes. A center console boat under 25-feet can be safe for offshore fishing. Maintenance and construction and hull design all play a part. Twin engines are preferred for offshore use.Most of all, for going offshore in a small center console, the skipper must be experienced–and that includes the experience to know when not to go. The ocean does not reward bravado.

Stock #109867 1979 O'DAY 25 OMC GAS ENGINE AND INCLUDES TRAILER EASY TO TRANSPORT Great sailing boat, very easy to handle. Convenient that it is trailerable an has reclining keel. She goes to windward in a chop, because she has both a centerboard and a keel. The centerboard gives her a 6Ft draft which makes her fast and close winded and helps her track when waves build up. With her board up you can slide into coves or shallow bays for a quick swim or to anchor for the night. The cabin is spacious and well appointed. Cushions match fish print trim, which are being stored at owners home to keep them clean and like new, (not shown in photos). Additional Information

The cabin with over 6’10” of headroom provides roomy shelter. It features a comfortable dinette, galley, sleeping area and a stand up head and shower as well as the pilot station.

The dinette is located along the port side of the cabin, it has lots of storage under its seats, makes into a 6’4” berth and features the forward viewing companion seat.

The pilots station and galley are located along the starboard side. The galley consists of a stainless steel sink, 23 gallon water supply and a 6 gallon hot water tank and ample room for the stove of your choice. Aft of the galley is the stand up head with a marine toilet and shower.

The forward section of the cabin features a 6’4” “V” berth, two reading lights, and a large deck hatch. It is separated from the main cabin with a privacy curtain.

Center console fishing boats at the lower-end of this size class usually feature a single outboard, while boats pushing 26 feet usually offer an option for twins. Aquasport 2500 CC

The Aquasport 2500 CC’s flared bow and high-freeboard design provides the dry ride fishermen want. The center console’s Kevlar-reinforced hull, with the company’s Dyna-Core hullside construction, offers the durability necessary in an offshore boat. Boston Whaler says its 250 Dauntless bay boat which debuted late last year, delivers a high-quality experience with its smooth ride and spacious deck, outfitted with fishing features such as a 35-gallon aft-deck livewell, bow fish box, and a full-beam casting platform astern. Choose from several leaning-post options, one of which includes a second livewell. Family members will enjoy the bow sun pad, with port and starboard folding backrests, and the console lounger with armrests. Whaler also employed folding backrests for the port and starboard stern seats. Choose from multiple Mercury power options up to a 400 hp XXL L6 DTS Verado.

Cobia 240 CC

Cobia took the proven hull of the 237 CC and designed a new deck for it to provide both tournament anglers and family fishermen with all necessary amenities. The 240 features twin 40-gallon insulated fish boxes and a 28-gallon livewell as well as a forward-entry head and a full windshield. Although rated for up to 300 hp, this center console tops out at 44 mph using a pair of Yamaha F115s and sips only 3 mpg at 27 mph.

Contender 25 Bay

Contender’s 25 Bay rides on a twin-step hull that’s quick to plane and runs at a consistently flat trim angle. The use of a jackplate enables the 25 Bay to jump on plane in shallow water. With a Yamaha F300, this model can reach 60 mph. It features 40 gallons of livewell capacity, a 45-gallon insulated insole fish box, a 170-quart cooler under the helm seating, a 40-quart cooler below the forward seat, and a pair of rod lockers. Crevalle 26 HCO

The Crevalle 260 HCO is designed for anglers with families that want the most a bay boat can offer. With a 90-gallon fuel capacity, the 26 HCO can reach speeds in the mid-50s with a 350 hp outboard. Grady-White Fisherman 236

Grady-White ’s Fisherman 236 brings together all the fishing features of a classic hardcore 23-footer while seamlessly integrating family comforts. The company started with a roomy cockpit, rod and tackle storage, a standard 15½-gallon livewell, and twin 22-gallon insulated fish boxes, and then added bow seating with foldaway backrests, a stand-up head inside the console, and swim-platform extensions port and starboard.

NorthCoast 230

The North Coast 230 all-composite center console features high freeboard, a pleasing sheer line, trim tabs and a self-bailing cockpit. Fishing amenities include rod holders, rod storage under the gunwales, fish boxes forward, and oversize rugged hardware. Two automatic bilge pumps, crosslink poly fuel tank with shut off valve, and fuel/water separator are standard features on the boat. The 230 hits speeds in excess of 40 mph, with crew and gear, when powered by 250 hp engine, the company says.

Pathfinder 2500 Hybrid

The 2500 Hybrid inshore/offshore bay boat is the first fully vacuum-infused Pathfinder model. It offers the integrated aft seating of the TRS series as well as a high-performance, double-stepped hull similar to the HPS models. A new deck layout focuses on a large, single-level foredeck, more cockpit space and additional freeboard. This new 24-foot-4-inch hybrid bay boat comes standard with dozens of features, including a fiberglass hardtop, 25-gallon aft starboard livewell, two bow fish boxes with locking rod storage, a leaning post with rocket launcher and tackle storage, a 12-inch Garmin display, and a saltwater washdown. Scout’s 255 LXF is the smallest member of the company’s luxury sportfish line, which blends high-performance fishing with high-end cruising. Standard features include Scout’s patented hardtop with tempered-glass enclosure, a portside livewell, a transom door, three fish boxes and a forward console cooler seat.

Sea Born LX24 CC

The LX24 CC sports higher freeboard than Sea Born’s bay boats, creating greater security and offering more protection from higher seas. Seating includes a helm leaning post, forward-facing bow loungers with stowable seatbacks, a plush aft bench and a front console seat. Fishing features aft include a 14-gallon portside livewell and an insulated fish box. Sea Chaser ’s Georgia builder, Carolina Skiff, designed the 24 HFC as a crossover bay and offshore boat that fits a fisherman’s needs while addressing the desires of most other on-water enthusiasts. HFC stands for “hybrid fish and cruise.” The 24-footer’s stepped-hull design helps enhance fuel efficiency and acceleration, and the center-console’s deck layout ­provides storage, easy bilge access, a large foredeck with U-shaped seating, a swim platform, and a side-entry door to port.

Sea Fox 266 Commander

Like many fishing vessels today, Sea Fox’s 266 Commander attracts the family boater as well as the serious angler. The double-wide lounger and storage box forward offer comfortable seating and space for tackle and gear. Twin fish boxes with overboard discharge make smart use of the cockpit sole; at the transom, twin flip-down jump seats and a folding bench disappear when it’s time to set lines. The 266 Commander sports a newly designed 50-gallon livewell with a thick, acrylic double-latch lid and tension hinges. Standard gunwale rod holders and storage keep rods ready, and a built-in tackle center organizes the lures or rigs you’ll need.

World Cat 230CC

With its ample beam and catamaran design, the World Cat 230CC offers anglers a roomy cockpit that seats 10 and the seakeeping ability you might expect from a much bigger boat, World Cat says. Best Small Center Console Boats Under 25 Feet

The most affordable center consoles are often small ones, and though they may not be intended for oceanic use or to hold a huge crowd, the best small center console boats have a number of additional advantages over their larger brethren. They’re easier to tow, easier to maintain, cost less to run, and can access some fishing grounds that larger boats dare not go for fear of running aground. What constitutes “small” is certainly debatable, but most boaters would agree that those over 25’ are on the larger side and probably don’t belong in this discussion. Still, when perusing all the different center consoles for sale , no matter how tight the budget or size constraint may be, you’ll want to know you’re buying a quality brand. Which are the very best small center console boats no more than 25’? These top picks all have something special to offer.

Small Center Console Fishing Boats

While many center consoles are focused on fishing, some are more focused than others. If you value angling abilities above all else these brands are must-see options.

Jones Brothers

Jones Brothers Marine builds four V-hull boats that fall into the under-25-foot center console fishing boat category, from 18’ to 22’8.” They also have a lineup of four flat-bottom boats that are center consoles, as well. What all of these boats share in common is that they’re fishing machines, period. Parker Boats

Parker is another builder with a well-deserved reputation for building serious fishing machines without too many frills or fancy features. In recent years, they’ve begun adding more comfort touches to several of the seven small center console boats in their lineup, but they’ve kept true to their mission and retained maximum fishability in every manner. They’re also known for being exceptionally stout boats, built to last through many years of tough service. Sportsman boats may pay a bit more attention to the family aspect of owning a center console than the other builders we’ve mentioned in this section, but they do so without giving an inch on the fishing front and will be a top pick for anglers who take their spouse and kids along for the ride. They’re also standouts for the level of accessories and accouterments they include on their boats as standard features, which outshine the vast majority of their competitors. Small Aluminum Center Console Boats

Aluminum center console boats are a great choice for many people, especially those who want a lighter boat that’s easy to trailer and easy to handle around the docks. Aluminum boats are also lower maintenance and require less power. On the flip side of the coin, they may get tossed around a bit more in the waves and may have fewer integrated features (since they can’t be molded in, as with fiberglass), but on the whole aluminum makes for a great center console. And these builders know it.

All of G3’s boats are aluminum, and they offer a lineup of six center console bay boats from 17’2” to 22’3”. They’re available with EZ Loader trailers and have extensive lists of standard features including multiple livewells, fishing rod racks, onboard tackle stowage compartments, and more. A top feature that sets them apart is performance, even with relatively small outboards. Xpress Boats

Xpress Boats has a selection of bay and skiff models that are all constructed of all-welded aluminum. They’re high-end for aluminum boats, too, with 0.125” gauge 5052 aluminum hulls, standard trailers, locking rodboxes, livewells, bow-mount electric trolling motors, locking rodboxes, and in one case a twin-engine option. These boats are also known for their “Hyper-Lift” hull design, which delivers a fast hole shot, excellent efficiency, and low-speed planing abilities. Remember that twin-engine option we mentioned? Affordable Small Center Console Boats

Affordability is in the eye of the beholder, but for most people finding an affordable boat can be challenging. These builders, however, make an affordability mark that will be tough to beat.

There are four center consoles in Bayliner’s model line, from 18’4” to 24’0”. These are boats that attempt—successfully by most measures—to strike a balance between fishability, comfort, and cost. As a rule you’ll find that their MSRPs significantly undercut most of their competitors (one of the traits that helped land Bayliner a spot on our list of the 10 Best Small Motor Boat Brands ), while delivering a boat that looks and functions beyond expectations considering the price differential. Carolina Skiff

There are a huge number of choices in the Carolina Skiff lineup, with 18 models that qualify asl small center console fishing boats. In fact, they offer only one model that’s outside of this range. These are relatively simple, straightforward boats, which means they’re easy to maintain and tend to cost less than many competing options. The Starcraft brand offers both fiberglass and aluminum boats of all sorts, but the standout offering they bring to the table in the aluminum center console department is the Freedom lineup. The 160 CC is one of the smallest center consoles around and is designed to be utilitarian and simple, which translates into very low cost as compared to most other center consoles. The 180 gives buyers a slightly larger option. Inshore Small Center Console Boats

By definition most of the best small center consoles will be appropriate for inshore, since they’re generally designed for saltwater use but aren’t quite large enough for regular use in offshore waters. That said, there are some targeted specifically for bay and inshore fishing including these top brands. 

Boston Whaler

Boston Whaler boats are famous for being unsinkable, thanks to a unique construction method of pumping foam under high pressure between the hull and deck liner, resulting in a fiberglass-foam-fiberglass sandwich that fills belowdecks voids. This gives them an edge in handling choppy waters as well as in safety, as the foam helps to absorb vibrations and quiet water noise. Also helping Boston Whaler secure this spot on our list, they offer a huge lineup of models appropriate for either fishing or for kicking around on the bay and inshore waters. Mako boats has a number of offerings that fit into this mold but the Pro Skiff series will stand out for inshore anglers. These boats have Mako’s “Inverted V” hullform, which has deeper sides and a central tunnel-like depression that result in performance somewhat like that of a powercat (and also helped Mako land on our list of the overall Best Center Console Boat Brands ). Additionally, the Pro Skiff lineup, which includes the 13 CC, 15 CC, 17 CC, and 19CC, comes in package form well equipped to fish including a trailer and motor at Mako’s nationally advertised “No Haggle No Hassle” pricing. Pathfinder is well known for offering inshore fishing boats that are at the top of the heap, whether you’re considering fit and finish, equipment, fishing prowess, or performance. Five of their models from 22’5” to 24’9” fit into our parameters for the best small center console boats. Each of these is highly customizable, with a huge list of optional features that allows a buyer to rig out the boat exactly as he or she likes. Each also offers eyebrow-raising performance; a 2400 Open rigged with a Yamaha F300, for example, has cruising speeds a tick over the 40 mph mark and a top-end well over 50 mph.  Pathfinder boats for sale . 

Small Center Console Deep V Boats

While the vast majority of the small center consoles out there run on V hulls of one sort or another, few are true deep-V designs. Named one of the Top 10 Innovations that Changed the Boating World , the Deep-V is usually described as having 21 or more degrees of deadrise at the transom. These top picks all meet that mark and stand out from the crowd for additional reasons, as well.

Most of the Contender Boats fleet is too large to meet our definition of “small,” however, their 24S fits the bill and carries 22.5 degrees of transom deadrise. This allows it to slice through big waves while minimizing the pounding, and anyone who’s run a Contender knows that their reputation for smooth riding is well-deserved. Another case where the manufacturer’s lineup mostly exceeds our definition of a small center console, Regulator Marine does have the 23 (which is 23'5" LOA). This boat, like most in Regulator’s lineup, has an exceptionally aggressive hull—in this case, a full 24 degrees of deadrise, the most of any in this roundup. Small Center Console Jet Boats

If you prefer a jet boat to an outboard-powered center console, your choices will be quite limited. That said, there are a handful of models that qualify, offering sporty handling and the fun prop-free ride of a jet boat.

Every boat Scarab builds is a jet boat powered by BRP Rotax engines. Three of their offerings are center consoles; the 235 Open ID and 255 Open ID (which stretches the tape to exactly 25’0”) are both fishing-oriented, but the 235 Open Wake is a very unusual offering: a center console designed for wake sports. If you want a center console jet boat that carries wakeboard racks on the T-top rather than rod holders and can be fitted with ballast tanks and ski tow bars, this will be the pick. Yamaha has the most extensive center console jet boat lineup on the water, with eight models from 19’5” to 24’6”. These are powered by Yamaha’s HO, SVHO, and TR-1 engines and 155 mm or 160 mm high-pressure pumps spinning three-bladed stainless-steel impellers. A standout among the standouts is their newest 255 FSH Sport H, the one and only center console jet boat that offers joystick control via the Yamaha Helm Master EX system. What Size Anchor Do I Need for a 25 Foot Boat? Find out Now Whether you are planning an offshore voyage, or spending a day with the family on the lake, it’s essential to have a proper anchor with you. There are a lot of anchors available, each one having a different size shape, holding power, and weight. So it can get quite hard to find the proper anchor for your 25 foot boat. When choosing an anchor for a 25 foot boat you have to take into consideration the holding power and the shape of the anchor. In general you will want an anchor with a holding power of at least 500 lbs for a 25 foot boat. The shape of the anchor is determined by the bottom in which you will be using it. So let’s start by looking over the characteristics of an anchor, what they mean and how they affect its performance, and then have a look at some of the best anchors for a 25 foot boat available on the market. Table of Contents Holding Power One of the most important things that you have to take into consideration when you choose an anchor is the holding power. Most anchors are rated by their holding power.  Holding powers refers to the anchor’s power to keep the boat in place while it’s in the water. And it’s measured in lbs. The tricky thing when choosing an anchor by it’s holding power is that you have to take into consideration not only the weight or length of your boat, but the weather conditions as well. For example an anchor with a holding power (not weight) of 150 lbs can easily hold a 25 foot boat if there is little to no wind, but if the wind suddenly starts blowing at 30 mph the same anchor won’t be able to do anything to stop the boat. This is why it’s always recommended to choose an anchor that will be able to hold your boat when the wind blows at 30 mph. A good thing to remember about holding power is that every manufacturer makes different types of anchors, and those anchors can have different holding power, even if they look the same. So only the manufacturer can tell you the exact holding power of an anchor and for what boat size it can be used. The Size of the Anchor The size of the anchor doesn’t influence too many things. For example, the size of the anchor doesn’t influence the weight too much. When it comes to weight the material out of which the anchor is made is more important. The only factors that are influenced by the size are the handleability and the space occupied. Most 25 feet boats don’t have an electrical system to lower and pull the anchor, so you will have to do it by hand. So you will probably want an anchor as small as possible. Overall you should look for a small or medium sized anchor. The size won’t influence the efficiency of the anchor at all, and getting one that is too big will only make things uncomfortable for you. Another extremely important characteristic is the shape. Some anchors are designed to be used in waters that have sandy bottoms, others are designed for rocky bottoms, others for mud, etc.  We are interested in rocky bottoms, so let’s take a look at the most common shoes and see which of them are good. Claw: Very efficient anchor, it was initially used for oil rigs, it’s good for all types of environments, with the exceptions of clay and grassy bottoms. Spade: One of the best overall anchors, it has a good holding power and has no big disadvantage, the only place where it doesn’t do good are rocky bottoms. Grapnel: very useful for reef, and rocky bottoms where it can grab onto things, but otherwise not very practical. Patent: Overall a good anchor butt it doesn’t have as much holding power as the rest. It only performs well in mud and sand. Plough: Great holding power, but hard to stow. Otherwise it performs great on most types of bottoms. Admiral: The classic anchor. It has a grat holding power but due to its shape it can be dangerous in shallow waters. Overall it performs well in most types of bottoms. If you use the wrong type of anchor on the wrong type of bottom, the holding power of the anchor will be greatly reduced, since there is a good chance that you won’t be able to get a good grip. Weight and Material Weight and material are somewhat important, but not as important as the rest. So in most cases they can be ignored, what you really should care about is the holding power and the shape. Does the Boat Type Influence the Anchor I Choose? Before we move to the recommended anchors I want to quickly cover one last thing. At this point you might be wondering if the type of boat that you have will influence the anchor you choose. The answer in most cases is no. 25 feet boats are considered small boats, so there is a limit to how much weight they can carry. So if you have a 25 feet pontoon, or a bass boat, or a skiff, or a ski boat, you shouldn’t worry too much about the weight of your boat. Most anchors that you will find on the market will suit you just fine. Things get more complicated when we get to bigger boats, if we were talking about a 30 foot boat, or even a 27 foot boat things might be a little different, but right now it’s not the case. LOS ANGELES — Prosecutors are seeking restitution for the families of 34 people killed in a scuba dive boat fire in 2019 that was the deadliest maritime disaster in recent U.S. history. A judge will determine the amount on Thursday during a hearing in federal court in Los Angeles. The proceeding comes nearly five years after the Sept. 2, 2019, tragedy off the central California coast, which prompted changes to maritime regulations , congressional reform and several ongoing civil lawsuits. The captain of the Conception, Jerry Boylan, was convicted last year of one count of misconduct or neglect of ship officer following a 10-day trial in federal court in downtown Los Angeles. The charge is a pre-Civil War statute colloquially known as seaman’s manslaughter that was designed to hold steamboat captains and crew responsible for maritime disasters. He was sentenced to four years in prison and three years of supervised release . He is out on bond and must report to the Bureau of Prisons by Aug. 8. His appeal is ongoing. (Courtesy of Ventura County Fire Department) The Conception was anchored off Santa Cruz Island, 25 miles south of Santa Barbara, when it caught fire before dawn on the final day of a three-day excursion, sinking less than 100 feet from shore. Thirty-three passengers and a crew member perished, trapped in a bunkroom below deck. Among the dead were the deckhand, who had landed her dream job; an environmental scientist who did research in Antarctica; a globe-trotting couple; a Singaporean data scientist; and a family of three sisters, their father and his wife. Boylan was the first to abandon ship and jump overboard. Four crew members who joined him also survived. Although the exact cause of the blaze remains undetermined , prosecutors blamed Boylan for failing to post the required roving night watch and never properly trained his crew in firefighting. The lack of the roving watch meant the fire was able to spread undetected across the 75-foot boat. But Boylan’s federal public defenders sought to pin blame on boat owner Glen Fritzler, who with his wife owns Truth Aquatics Inc., which operated the Conception and two other scuba dive boats, often around the Channel Islands. Conception dive boat tragedy They argued that Fritzler was responsible for failing to train the crew in firefighting and other safety measures, as well as creating a lax seafaring culture they called “the Fritzler way,” in which no captain who worked for him posted a roving watch. The Fritzlers have not spoken publicly about the tragedy since an interview with a local TV station a few days after the fire. Their attorneys have never responded to requests for comment from The Associated Press. Three days after the fire, Truth Aquatics filed suit under a pre-Civil War provision of maritime law that allows it to limit its liability to the value of the remains of the boat, which was a total loss. The time-tested legal maneuver has been successfully employed by the owners of the Titanic and other vessels and requires the Fritzlers to show they were not at fault. That case is pending, as well as others filed by victims’ families against the Coast Guard for what they allege was lax enforcement of the roving watch requirement.
