Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

A variant of the SEAHAWK 17 with more freeboard, bilge keels, and smaller rig. According to the brochure, available in various stages of construction. An inboard engine and wheel steering was available. A fixed keel version, called the SENORITA, was sold by this same company.

Review of Pedro 17

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. And outside the sailing season, just bottom cleaning and perhaps anti-fouling painting once a year - a few hours of work, that's all.

The boat equipped with a masthead rig. The advantage of a masthead rig is its simplicity and the fact that a given sail area - compared with a fractional rig - can be carried lower and thus with less heeling moment.

The boat can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 0.45 - 0.55 meter (1.48 - 1.78 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Pedro 17 is 2.62, indicating that this boat would not be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 5.1 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Pedro 17 is about 61 kg/cm, alternatively 341 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 61 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 341 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is a Ballast Ratio?

What is Displacement Length Ratio?

SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio) Indicates how fast the boat is in light wind: - Cruising Boats have ratios 10-15 - Cruiser-Racers have ratios 16-20 - Racers have ratios above 20 - High-Performance Racers have ratios above 24 Sail-area/displacement ratio (SA/D ratio): 14.89

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 8m 2 (86 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

If you need to renew parts of your running rig and is not quite sure of the dimensions, you may find the estimates computed below useful.

UsageLengthDiameter
Jib sheet 5.2 m(17.2 feet)8 mm(5/16 inch)
Genoa sheet5.2 m(17.2 feet)8 mm(5/16 inch)
Mainsheet 13.1 m(43.1 feet)8 mm(5/16 inch)

Dave Portnoy rescued by Coast Guard after drifting out to sea: 'Almost lost Captain Dave'

"captain dave may never go on the boat again," said portnoy..

Portrait of Julia Gomez

Barstool Sports' owner and founder Dave Portnoy was rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard after losing control of his boat off the Massachusetts' coast.

"You boys almost lost Captain Dave today," said Portnoy in a TikTok video he posted explaining what happened. "Captain Dave almost was lost to the ocean."

On Monday, Portnoy took his mother out on a boat ride off the coast of Nantucket, he said. Portnoy did not try to turn on the boat before unhooking it from the from the buoys. He drifted out and attempted to turn on the boat only to find that the boat had no power.

Content warning: Video below contains language that is not suitable for all audiences .

The boat had no power, radio or anchor and there were heavy winds which caused him to drift out to sea, Portnoy explained.

"Next thing you know, Captain Dave is lost at sea," said Portnoy.

The Barstool founder began screaming for help as he sailed, and shot a distress signal from a flare gun he kept onboard the boat.

Coast Guard rescues Portnoy

According to Portnoy, a woman "in what looks like a rowboat," boarded his boat and asked if they can make a TikTok together, said Portnoy. He declined her request and then used her radio to contact the Coast Guard.

The Coast Guard made it to Portnoy's location where they tied up his boat and towed it back.

This was Portnoy's third, and possibly last time captaining a boat.

"Captain Dave may never go on the boat again," he said.

USA TODAY reached out to the Coast Guard for comment.

Search continues for missing boater; 2 children who had been on sailboat with him identified

Portrait of Rashad Alexander

Editor's note: This story has been updated with the identification of the victims.

STURGEON BAY - The two children whose bodies were recovered from the waters of Green Bay were identified by the Door County Sheriff's Office on Wednesday.

The sheriff's office confirmed that the children are Joshua Salnik, 3, and Charlotte Salnik, 5. They had been on a sailboat Saturday with their father, Billy Salnik, 32, of Little Suamico, who still remains missing.

According to the sheriff's office:

  • The children's bodies were recovered on Monday south of Chambers Island in the town of Gibraltar.
  • The siblings were found together and they were both wearing flotation devices.
  • The autopsies were done on Tuesday by the Brown County Medical Examiner's Office.
  • The search continues for the father. The sheriff's office said it is conducting drone searches over the bay today and the search will continue on Thursday.
  • The incident remains under investigation.

GoFundMe started for Salniks

Tina Salnik, the mother of Bill, created a GoFundMe on Monday, raising money for Bill and his children's funerals. The fundraiser had raised over $15,000, as of 3 p.m. Wednesday, to help pay for the funerals.

In the description of the GoFundMe created by Tina Salnik suggests a storm that evening was the cause of the disappearance. "They took the sailboat out and were caught in a storm, they did not survive," Salnik said.

Timeline of events

According to reports between the Door County Sheriff's Department, Oconto County Sheriff's Department, and the U.S. Coast Guard, this was the timeline of events leading up to discovering the children's bodies.

  • Salnik and his two children departed Green Island, in the bay, around 4 p.m. July 13 in an 18-foot sailboat.
  • The three were reported missing at 12:42 p.m. Sunday when they didn't arrive at their planned destination in Oconto. The Coast Guard was notified at 4:27 p.m. Sunday.
  • The father's truck and trailer were found at the boat ramp on Sunday afternoon. Calls to the Salnik's phone went straight to voicemail.
  • A capsized vessel was retrieved at 6:22 a.m. Monday south of Chambers Island and was towed to Fish Creek.
  • At 11:21 a.m. Monday, the bodies of two young children were found from the water about 1 mile south of where the boat had been located.

McCarty confirmed that the Door County Sheriff's Department found the bodies and the boat, while the initial missing persons report and overdue boater complaint was handled by the Oconto County Sheriff's Department.

Outboard for Pedro 17

  • Thread starter Drewd
  • Start date Mar 31, 2018
  • Mar 31, 2018

Here is a picture of my Pedro 17 boat. She’s just being repainted and once that’s done she needs an outboard. Obviously originally she was a day yacht but since has had the sails removed and an outboard was put on her. This was not included in the sale so now I’m on the hunt for an outboard. My problem is how big of an outboard can I put on her? I’m looking at a 40hp mariner long shaft 2 stroke but I don’t want to pay out for it if it’s going to be to heavy for the boat. The size of the transom is 20”. Any help or advice will be greatly welcomed.

i would use an electric trolling motor or a 2-4hp outboard. a 40hp is way to big for a 17' sail boat that weighs 2000# http://sailboatdata.com/viewrecord.asp?class_id=6078 as 'kogs mentioned, if your trying to get a displacement hull to plane, you need about 400hp and then it wont be stable (as in you wont be able to control it). displacement hull speed is 5.5 knots. you can achieve this with a trolling motor or a 2hp motor if you want faster than that, you need a longer boat, or a different hull design (planing hull vs displacement hull). https://www.easycalculation.com/physics/classical-physics/hull-speed-calculator.php

Sea Rider

Supreme Mariner

We use Tohatsu 2 strokes 15-18 HP engines to power J-24 and larger 30 footer sailboats with maximized props while sitting on reinforced engine mounts with 0 issues so far. Bear in mind that if the sailboat will be used with removed mast, sails going per much less 6-10 HP standard engines, add extra boaters, will achieve a boaring displacement speed and surely lug the engine badly if used as factory delivered. With a larger OB with maximized prop can achieve fast displacement speed 10 knots or more, which is the speed that comes right after displacement speed. Just distribute deck weight evenly for sailboat to run parallel to water level and voila!!. Correct trim and engine height is a must have for sailboat to perform well. Reinforce transom if needed. If a sailboat runs fast at fast displacement speed with adequate sails and wind, why won't it run same powered with a larger engine as stated. Happy Boating

Thank you for your advice. I understand your comments about displacement and plaining hulls. I’m not really bothered about speed at all my big concern is bad weather as we live next to Loch Ness in the Highlands of Scotland where the winds can get pretty harsh real quick. I've seen small boats like mine get in to trouble due to having a small outboard. What I’m looking for is a big enough engine to push me through the bad weather to a mooring. As you say and I agree that my boat will be more than happy with a 2hp but if the wind gets up a 9.9hp will hold me still in the water but won’t get me to a mooring safely I don’t think? What are your thoughts?

Fleet Admiral

Hi you definitely can’t put a 40hp on this boat. Likely a 6-10hp be more than enough. Apart from that. Displacement hulls have a displacement max hull speed. Achieved by a certain hp....anything more is a waste of time really. I have never seen an outboard any larger than a 9.9hp on any single hull sailing boat.

I'll have my doubts a 10 HP-OB will take OP safely back to Terra Firme if encountering harsh winds that's why OP was asking if a 40 would be OK. Powering a small OB as an aux, it's not same as powering a larger HP-OB as an aux or main power plant whether for pottering around or taking you back home safely. Anyway, just expect displacement speeds with less HP-OB's and fast displacement speeds with larger HP ones. To plane a sailboast is Mission Impossible with any portable OB. Let's see what OP has in mind, wants to do as it's his decision not ours. Happy Boating

If you really want a trailerable motor/sailboat, you should get one like a MacGregor 19 Powersailer. It will do 25 mph with a 40 hp outboard. And its built to handle the power. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hemNdJmzQBo The Macgregor 26 is a pretty awesome sailboat.

A far away shot pic can't say much, if transom thickness is at least 3/4 of the swivel bracket's internal lenght, will be OK. Happy Boating

Interesting thread indeed. The question reminds me of a neighbour in Cottage country in the dead of winter asking what tires she could buy to get her low slung rear wheel drive sportscar with ground effects through 2 to 4 feet of snow so she doesn't get snowed in.

If I would ever buy same kind of sailboat, would reinforce both middle transom sides with 1.0 mm SS plates. If most boaters likes going per max 10 HP-OB's, whether short or long shaft ones, should know that 15's are detuned ones from 9.9/10 HP ones, consequently weights exact same, in that case go for the larger OB and prop it right to push sailboat happily. But if dealing with strong currents, harsh winds as described by OP, needs a 30 HP minimum... Happy Boating

Hello I have just bought my first boat. I was wondering what out board would be best for my boat. The boat is a 17 ft pedro motor boat. From transom to bottom of hull is 19 inch do I need a long or short shaft out board ? And what hp the hull is grp ?

IMP-ish

IMP-ish powerboater

I don't know what a pedro motor boat is like - can you post some pictures of your boat. Or tell us the boat's weight and speed you want. Short shaft is 15" Long shaft is 20" Extra long shaft is 25" Start with the anti-ventilation plate about 1/4" above the bottom of the hull.
I can't seem to get photos up on this site I tryed to look for the plate on the hull today I will try again tomorrow thanks for your help
The Pedro boats I got from google are big heavy cabin cruisers. Which outboard depends on hull shape, weight, and what speed you want.
Yeh that's what I get from google too I can tell you it's not big or heavy I will try to find away of posting a picture of her thanks

Pedro 17 Sail Boat

pedro 17 sailboat

Pedro 17 sail boat, I bought this to do up alittle and use but have been pursueded/forced to buy a caravan so I'm having to sell it. Firstly the trailer is really hood, I bought a aluminium alko caravan chassis and then had it fabricated at a local engineers into a flat bed trailer using industrial galvanised steel flooring for the flat bed. The tyres on the trailer as almost brand new, the trailer cost me in excess of £600 alone. Moving onto the boat she is a triple bilge keel Pedro sail boat that I am told are very stable and good as a starter boat, there is the mast, rigging and sails, someone stole the boom so I have aquired another one but its a wooden one. The rudder is present and in decent condition.

The inside needs a clean and paint and I have a new set of cushions for the interior as well. There is a main sail and a gib in good condition and some of the rigging and ropes. Viewing possible if you message me, the boat it located in barnsley. Thank you

Saltyseadog

Hi This is my first post on this forum. Hello to all who read this post and I hope that you may be able to assisit me the saltyseadog in my quest. My mistress is a little fiberglass boat built by fibersonic marine, she is I am told a pedro 17 footer, my quest therefore is to find out if she has any sisters and is there a owners club for her class. She does give me so much pleasure, as she has more head room than my last mistress of which I was always banging my head on her beams. Thank you for spending you time reading my post and good sailing from the saltyseadog.

The Seahawk is I believe the same design uit with a pivoting centerboard and fore hatch,It sails much better to windward,It is still built.

Thank you for your reply to the Saltyseadog. I will follow up your suggestion. My mistress does not have a centreboard but a concrete weight. I was concerned that she would heel over in a strong wind, but reefed in she sails well and upright, travelling very well. Thank you again for your reply, corkonian1 regards saltyseadog

If you can afford the later Eagle 525 it is much better made, though essentially the same boat. They look a wee bit funny, but you will never hear a bad word about them. I 'think' the Skipper 17 was a Peter Milne design (he designed the Fireball dinghy). Its a much better boat than a Pedro I'd imagine.
