Path: On board Baltic's award-winning 45m sailing yacht
Inspired by an experienced sailor, the World Superyacht Award-winning sloop Path is a real standout, as Sam Fortescue finds out in Palma...
It takes an effort to stand out from the crowd in Palma. There are so many metres of gleaming superyachtery lined up on the quays that everything starts to look the same. Not so the latest launch from Baltic Yachts . It has the advantage of a mast, which naturally helps in a world dominated by motor yachts. But it is really the sleek, quiet purpose of 44.6 metre Path that distinguishes her. That and the flame orange crew uniforms.
With a German designer, an obsessive Finnish builder and an engaged owner, nothing on this boat has been left to chance. I am immediately grateful for the owner’s foresight as I step aboard on an uncharacteristically grey morning. With the leaden threat of rain, we congregate under the truly vast hardtop he requested, which protects the dining and lounging areas of the cockpit. It is a continuation of the coachroof, which sweeps aft a further seven metres.
“The owner took all the experience he gained from sailing round the world and put it into the new boat,” explains Henry Hawkins, executive vice president of Baltic Yachts. “His previous boat was a Baltic 112 which we call Old Path . He’s a hugely passionate sailor and competes in a couple of sports boat classes. So he was adamant he wanted a cruising boat with performance.”
And what the hardtop lacks in pure elegance, it makes up for in sheer practicality. It is just one part of the owner’s philosophy of choosing reliability over elaborate technology or flashy styling, as designer Rolf Vrolijk notes. “This owner knows very well what he wants. There was no need to go to an external designer to make a statement.”
Ease of handling was the other key brief for the judel/vrolijk team. Path has twin rudders, for instance, and a hydraulic lifting keel. This reduces her draught to 3.4 metres – enough to get into many smaller ports and anchorages, including much of the Bahamas. She also features a roller boom system from Carbo Link to make light work of furling or reefing the 558-square-metre mainsail.
On the mechanical side, she is equipped with a saildrive pod system that can rotate through 340 degrees beneath the boat to give optimum thrust and torque at almost any angle. Coupled with the bow thruster, this flexible system simplifies close quarters manoeuvring. A four-blade variable-pitch propeller also adds to efficiency across long passages under power or when motor sailing.
“When manoeuvring under power, you can set it to a high engine speed to provide hydraulic power to the thruster via a PTO,” Hawkins says. Only one thruster is needed with the rotating saildrive, he explains. “We can then add a little pitch to the blades to move forward or backwards or even sideways as needed, as this leg rotates.”
Path rows somewhat against the current with its engine. The capable 550hp Scania unit is certainly up to the job, but the power system eschews hybrid or battery-assisted technology. It is an old-fashioned mix of iron, oil and diesel with enough grunt to pull the boat along and turn the winches, while a pair of 55kW Northern Lights generators pick up the hotel loads. Of course, that is exactly what the owner wanted.
“We looked at electric propulsion, as with the majority of our boats,” Hawkins says. “But Path is set up as a world cruiser and the cornerstone had to be proven reliability.” Similarly, the Hundested main thruster pod is theoretically capable of retracting into the hull to reduce drag under sail. “The owner chose not to take the folding ability for the sake of simplicity,” he adds. “While the pod and propeller hydraulics can all be driven mechanically to return to port.”
Before anything else, though, this boat is a Baltic, and that means a fast hull with a meticulous layup in carbon fibre. By making ample use of Sprint and pre-preg materials from Gurit, Baltic has limited the displacement of this 44.6-metre yacht to 172 tonnes. Pre-preg means that precisely the right amount of epoxy resin is already right where it needs to be in the layup, eliminating the wastage of wet systems.
The lines by judel/vrolijk are as sleek as you would expect from a team that has done so much work with racing yachts. Despite her length, her beam tops out at 9.35 metres, giving Path naturally efficient proportions. The architecture is closely related to that of the Baltic 112 Canova . “These are families of hulls developed through feedback from the crew,” Vrolijk says.
A powerful masthead sloop rig gives the crew plenty of options, and again, the emphasis is on ease of handling. “We didn’t want to go too big with a square-head main, because that creates too much complexity for a cruising guy,” Vrolijk says. No fewer than two fixed and two removable headstays permit a range of sails upwind, plus a three-metre bowsprit for setting the gennaker or dedicated reaching sail. Baltic describes the set-up as a homage to the Imoca 60, whose multi-headsail configuration make short-handed racing a reality.
Vrolijk says that the boat sails well with two headsails set – jib and staysail or storm jib and staysail, as conditions dictate. The main is reefed by putting turns on the boom, but in order not to overstrain the mandrel, the sail still has three reefing points on the luff and leech that take the strain. After sea trials in Palma, he described Path ’s handling in typically dry fashion. “It was, of course, quite nice,” he told me. “She has a balanced rudder feel, and the boat tracks very well.”
Path is designed to sail at between 11 and 16 knots in typical conditions, but she had already hit speeds approaching 20 knots on the passage down from Finland, according to Captain Daniele Cesaro. In Palma, the boat handled 35-knot gusts under full main and a staysail jib.
Sightlines from the two wheels are well thought out, with a clear view ahead down the windward side. Each helm station has its own little hardtop with a glass panel for gazing at the sail. It feels a little like the bridge of the USS Enterprise sitting here with six big Sailmon screens for boat data and six huge glass-bridge displays.
Step inside, though, and you instantly return to a past where wood, not carbon fibre, was king. With decidedly classic styling, the interior is all about panelled walls and solid furniture. Elegant cabinetry is well endowed with fiddles – this is an owner who understands the need to steady yourself as you cross the saloon on a 20-degree heel. From sofas to a robust wooden swivel chair at the navigation station, it seemingly adds weight, but says Hawkins, the furniture is foam core with a wood veneer, which allows keeping the weight under control.
Margo Vrolijk led the styling team, making it a full house for judel/vrolijk. She drew on a visit to the owner’s home and a good look at his previous Baltic. “The concept is inspired by how the family lives ashore and translating that into an easily controlled sailing yacht,” she says. “The timeless style of the interior has been achieved through symmetry in geometry and balancing the choice of neutral and natural colour palettes with classic, colourful patterns like stripes and paisley shapes.”
This approach has created a very liveable environment below, with deep, inviting sofas, plump mattresses and comfy chairs. Despite the suede and natural fabric finishes, the upholstery has been designed to be easily maintained when off the beaten track. Most surfaces are in warm teak, while the floors are in a dark stained oak that will conceal wear and tear. “You can spill anything on the fabrics and it will still remain the same colour,” says Margo Vrolijk.
More than the materials, though, it is the spaces created by the design team that intrigue. Beneath that huge main saloon lie the owner’s quarters, bang amidships. The cabin spans the full beam but is partially divided near the middle by a glass screen. Twin beds lie to starboard, with access to a large bathroom with both a shower and recessed full-length bathtub.
To starboard is a wonderful kind of parlour or snug sitting room, with two Poltrona Frau recliners and a host of convenient features within reach. Touch a button and the glass panel turns opaque, becoming a screen for projecting charts and nav information. Pull open a low cabinet and there’s a custom-built recess for a decanter of whisky and weighted crystal tumblers. The glasses are inlaid with a magnet on the base to keep them from sliding off when set down. Pilot guides and reference books line the walls – a library for settling down with a drink to figure out where to head next.
Upstairs you reach the office, on a kind of half level. A huge array of electronics is concealed behind the panelling here, while twin VSAT domes can keep the owner as connected on board as he would be if he were sitting in the office. “The system is Starlink ready,” Hawkins says. “Then there’ll be no need for those big domes – the eggs in the rigging will disappear.”
As this space lacks a hull window, the owner requested an LED wall, the first I have seen aboard a yacht. Running the length of the hull in the office, it normally displays an aquarium scene, but can naturally be programmed to show anything. Vrolijk mocked up a full-size office and owner’s cabin to check every detail.
Although naturally on a smaller scale to the owner’s cabin, three en suite guest cabins offer heaps of space. A VIP cabin in the bow converts between double and twin and includes its own sofa area for privacy. The double just aft has an even larger snug seating area opposite. And a final guest double is in the aft accommodation. Though this puts it next to the crew area, it has its own private companionway to the saloon.
There are lots of little features which are a pleasure to discover. I liked the way that a navigation display folds up out of a burnished chart desk in the main saloon, for instance. Another display in the crew mess slides down out of an overhead cabinet to create a barrier between the navigator and the mess. It’s a smart idea that creates two distinct spaces when necessary. I also like how the doorknobs are leather bound.
With her huge aft deck and a big bathing platform for catching the sun, plus a tender well on the foredeck that serves as a pool when the Ribeye YT600 has been craned out, Path can hold her own in Mallorca and the world’s other yachting hotspots. But she won’t be here for long. Though she’s registered in Malta, this boat has no home port – no marina berth with her name on it. Her calling is as an ocean wanderer. She is going to find her own path around the world.

Baltic 146 // Judel/Vrolijk
Finnish luxury yacht builder baltic yachts builds 45m yacht baltic 146 with exterior and interior design by judel/vrolijk & co from germany..
The Baltic 146 has been developed as a bluewater cruiser but with twin rudders and a carbon-fiber hull to offer performance. A lifting keel reduces the draft from 5.90m to 3.40m. Captive winches keep a clean deck support a small crew to sail the 45m yacht. A bimini is over the cockpit and the double helm station as well. The 550 hp Scania engine is connected to a pod drive that rotates 360-degree and also serves as a stern thruster. Furthermore, the engine features SCR ( Selective Catalytic Conversion ).
The owners’ and three guest’s cabins are in the forward area of the vessel, while the crew of seven people is in the aft area.
Delivery is scheduled for the summer of 2021.
Yacht designer Rolf Vrolijk comments:
“This is a great opportunity to further develop the high performance, multi-role superyacht for which our design studio and Baltic Yachts have become renowned.”

Sailing yacht BLUSH (EX HELIOS) is a 45 meter 2007 luxury sailing yacht built by the Italian yacht builder Perini Navi and designed by Ron Holland design. With refits by Perini Navi Service and Refit facility in 2015 and another full soft furnishing refit in 2018, superyacht BLUSH offers accommodation for up to 10 guests in 4 - 5 luxury cabins.
NOTABLE FEATURES OF BLUSH: ~ great performance and comfort ~ flexible accommodation ~ warm inviting interiors ~ great exterior deck areas ~ alfresco dining ~ sunbathing options ~ spacious aft cockpit ~ fabulous swim platform ~ wide selection of water toys and amenities ~ air-conditioning ~ WiFi
BLUSH is the result of collaboration between the well known Italian yacht builder Perini Navi and well know superyacht designer / naval architect and Ron Holland. She is the second steel-hulled 45-meter yacht to be launched by Perini. The large sail area provides the best possible sailing performance for this ocean cruising yacht which also boasts a particularly large internal volume.
The interior was designed by SallyAnne Holmes and is a blend of mahogany wood with modern metallic and dusky pink hues.
The master and guest staterooms are particularly versatile in that they can be transformed into a variety of configurations.
BLUSH has additional interior space and beam which has resulted in additional displacement and increased a wetted surface area of the steel hull and drag. This has been absorbed into the luxury yacht’s hull shape to ensure that added drag was kept to an absolute minimum and sailing performance maximised. The yacht also incorporates efficient underwater appendages, including a rudder with a relatively high aspect ratio as well a drop keel.

The Perini Navi-built aluminium mast that rises over 50 metres above the yacht’s waterline carries a sail area of around 1,200m2. The sails are handled automatically by seven of Perini Navi’s reel captive winches. Perini Navi electric furlers and the in-boom furling system stores the 432m2 main sail within the carbon fibre boom.
BLUSH's (36m2) flybridge offers a comfortable sunbathing area aft and a helm station forward. The opening stern reveals a structural staircase that descends to a 7m2 swimming platform with a lateral shell door on the yacht’s port side. This is where all the water sports activity and swimming takes place.
Yacht Accommodation
S/Y BLUSH has been designed to accommodate up to 10 guests in 4 to 5 luxury cabins. Her Master stateroom is located in the aft of the vessel and can convert into two separate cabins with an additional pull out couch if necessary. Serendipity I: A Closer Look
Built in 2011 as the Italian yard Perini Navi’s 51st masterpiece, the 45 metre Serendipity I is the ultimate charter yacht for ocean adventures around the world. Currently cruising the Pacific with destinations between the Central American hotspots and Australia within her reach, Serendipity I stands out from other yachts in this region thanks to her breathtaking design and timeless elegance. As the fourth edition in Perini’s successful 45 metre steel-hulled range, she benefits from the knowledge gained by the yard in the construction of this specific vessel, with a few standout features that set her apart from her sisters. The deckhouse roof, for instance, has been lowered to make the presence of the flybridge above less noticeable, giving her more of a sporty and overall balanced appearance.
Serendipity I's naval architecture is the work of Ron Holland in collaboration with Perini Navi. Her 52 metre mast can carry a total surface of 900 square metres of sails and she can reach speeds of up to 13 knots whether under wind or engine power using her single Caterpillar C32 820kW diesel main engine. With a keel that can retract from 8.7 metres to just 3.9 metres, she is the perfect charter yacht for cruising in the Pacific, confidently entering shallow and remote anchorages that other luxury sailing yachts cannot.
Homely, Sophisticated Design
As with the exterior, Perini’s in-house design team are responsible for the interior design of the yacht who created a space that is stylish and modern, yet functional to use daily. A bar area finished in stainless steel is found as you enter the main saloon, with the dining area and lounge placed on opposite sides of the room. Warm colours give the main saloon a homely feel and are paired with contrasting glossy pale ceilings which brighten up the area. The same goes for textures used, and the matt teak floors are combined with high-gloss ebony used for the furniture.
Serendipity I accommodates six guests in three cabins on the lower deck, consisting of a full-beam master suite, one double and one twin cabin. For maximum flexibility, the gym can be transformed into an additional cabin to make for a total of eight guests accommodated on board. Foglizzo leather was used as panelling in the owner’s suite as well as the two bedside lockers. The contrasting theme continues throughout the yacht, with different textures and colours used, and only an eye-catching red corner sofa breaking the otherwise traditional colour palette. Lighting under the bed and wardrobes illuminates the cabin and adds a third dimension to the spacious feeling of this living area. The large eye-level portholes offer the perfect view to the ocean outside while retaining the ‘apartment feel’ on the inside.
The guest cabins feature ample storage space and a comfortable sofa on one side. Each cabin has been decorated with colourful artwork, personalising the different spaces further. The en suite bathrooms are bright and well-appointed with Quarella reconstructed marble washbasins and Corian panels in all showers. Each cabin on board has a unique flavour, and to achieve this, the Perini Navi Furnishing Office used different types of materials such as wood and leather to distinguish each space.
One thing guests will notice while indoors is the lack of excessive entertainment systems throughout the interior. There are no computer games on board, but if the weather gets in the way, there is always teaching guests how to tie knots and other fundamentals of sailing if they are interested. There is also chess, backgammon and cards on board plus a selection of DVDs too, as a backup.
Life on Deck
On the sundeck, guests are treated to spectacular panoramic views, and it is here where they tend to spend most of their time, according to Captain Ashley Taylor. “We find the guests are drawn to the comfortable loungers on this deck that are perfect for relaxing in the sun, and everyone loves the beanbags on the aft deck,” he says. A large L-shaped sofa is located on the starboard side with an even roomier sunbed situated aft.

Downstairs on the main deck, the spacious cockpit has been designed to accommodate various occasions and this philosophy of versatility is immediately evident in the layout and setup of the area. Two identical dining areas feature a comfortable corner sofa with chairs from the Royal Botania collection, while a large dining table seats eight guests with ease. Offering maximum flexibility, the dining table can also be folded open to accommodate larger gatherings. Complete with a bar, the lounge area closest to the main saloon entrance is perfect for intimate evenings on board and is well protected from the elements by the curving superstructure.
With a functional fold-out transom that transforms into a sizeable 7-square-metre swim platform, it’s from here where a Serendipity I ocean adventure begins. Perfectly set up for diving and watersports, those who are passionate about marine life and getting out on the water will particularly appreciate what the superyacht has to offer. “We have a 5.5 metre jet tender which is always a favourite for our guests,” adds Captain Taylor. “They are the type of people who want to explore the mangroves or get close to the reef, which the tender allows. The SeaBobs have also proven popular among the younger guests while our older guests love the paddleboards.”
Serendipity I is a charter yacht that stands as a true testament to exquisite Italian build quality and attention to detail. Finished to a high standard and with the trusted seaworthiness that comes with a yard like Perini Navi, a sailing charter yacht experience on board is truly a cut above the rest.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)
<< Previous page
Pages: 379-406
In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.
Keywords: Tuva, Early Iron Age, early Scythian period, Aldy-Bel culture, barrow, burial in the coffin, mummy, full genome sequencing, aDNA

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.
Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.
Belfry and Neighbouring Churches
Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.
To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.
Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral
The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.
Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.
Tsaritsa's Chambers
The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.
At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.
Palace of Tsar Alexis
The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

64 people missing and many rescued from 2 shipwrecks off Italy. At least 11 have died
Sixty-four people were missing at sea after a shipwreck off the Italian southern coast on Monday, United Nations’ agencies said in a statement. In the shipwreck, which took place about 200 kilometres (125 miles) off Calabria, a boat that had set off from Turkey eight days earlier caught fire and overturned, the U.N. agencies said, citing survivors. The Italian Red Cross said overall 12 people were rescued although one person died. (AP video shot by Valeria Ferraro)

ROME (AP) — Sixty-four people were missing in the Mediterranean Sea and several were rescued after their ship wrecked off Italy’s southern coast Monday, United Nations’ agencies said in a statement.
In a separate shipwreck, rescue workers evacuated dozens of suspected migrants but found 10 bodies trapped below the deck of a wooden boat off Italy’s tiny Lampedusa island, the German aid group Resqship wrote on Monday on the X social media platform.
The boat that wrecked about 200 kilometers (125 miles) off Calabria had set off from Turkey eight days earlier, but caught fire and overturned, the U.N. agencies said, citing survivors.
The search-and-rescue operation started following a mayday call by a French boat, the Italian coast guard said in a statement. The boat was sailing in a border area where Greece and Italy carry out search-and-rescue operations. The survivors and people still missing at sea came from Iran, Syria and Iraq, the U.N. agencies said.
The Italian Maritime Rescue Coordination Center immediately diverted two merchant vessels sailing nearby to the scene of the rescue. Assets from the European border and coast guard agency Frontex also helped.
The survivors were brought to the Calabrian port of Roccella Jonica, where they were disembarked and entrusted to the care of medical personnel. One of the 11 rescued migrants died soon after, the coast guard said.
In the second shipwreck, the crew aboard Resqship’s boat, the Nadir, found 61 people on the wooden boat, which was full of water.
“Our crew was able to evacuate 51 people, two of whom were unconscious,” it added. “The 10 dead were in the flooded lower deck of the boat.”
