Cape Dory 28

Cape Dory 28 368

I’m a longtime sailor on OPB-other people’s boats-and one crisp, Chesapeake fall day, I found myself ashore and in the process of succumbing to a quiet desperation. I did the only thing that one can do under such circumstances: I went and looked at boats.

I wandered around boatyards until I found myself gazing at a Carl Alberg-designed Cape Dory 28. Three weeks later, and despite the fact that I really hadn’t intended for it to happen, I was a boat owner.

What drew me to the Cape Dory were lines altogether typical of Alberg, including a graceful sheer that sweeps forward from a counter stern to a teak bowsprit. Teak grabrails and eyebrows accentuate the fine proportions of the long trunk cabin, and easily navigable side decks connect the generous cockpit to the fair-sized foredeck. A full keel and a keel-hung rudder complete the profile.

Details below complement the traditional exterior. Solid teak and teak veneer are abundant, and bronze, in the through-hulls and the eight opening ports, is everywhere it should be.

Above the saloon settees, narrow shelves hold books; beneath each settee lies a 30-gallon water tank. More storage spaces are located behind the seatbacks. The starboard settee serves as a single berth; the other slides out to create a slender “double.” A teak table swings down from the bulkhead and unfolds between the settees. The saloon has about 6 feet of headroom, and two opening hatches overhead help keep the air moving through it. The head is forward of the saloon and contains a hanging wet locker and a small sink, which unfortunately drains into a fiberglass trough, then into the bilge. The marine toilet is installed below the waterline, so all valves must be closed when it’s not in use. A folding door separates the head from the V-berth, which covers various compartments. A cushioned plywood insert fills the V to create a double berth, forward of which a panel opens to the anchor locker.

The companionway, its top step on the countertop next to the single stainless-steel sink, bisects the galley, between a spacious icebox to starboard and an alcohol stove to port.

Removing the companionway stairs buys just enough room for a small person to ease over the top of the engine to service the raw-water pump or to top off the transmission oil.

Under sail, my CD 28, Innisfree, was a sound, safe, and comfortable cruising boat. She was stiff, surprisingly quick in light wind, extremely capable in heavy air, and a sheer joy off the wind. Innisfree balanced well, tracked perfectly, and, with all of her momentum, just plowed right through the Chesapeake chop. The club-footed jib, though handy for windward work when I was singlehanding, was difficult to trim properly, so I eventually installed a ProFurl furling system.

Between 1974 and 1987, Cape Dory Yachts built 388 CD 28s in East Taunton, Massachusetts. Today the 28 is listed at prices from $14,500 to $35,000. The Cape Dory Sailboat Owners Association ( www.capedory.org ) is just one of several groups that offers support to CD fans.

and ran across a Nebe Cape 28.

There is very little about them I could find but what I did find was positive in that they are considered well built and very sea worthy.

They appear to be in a similar class as an , but cost significantly more. They have a somewhat unusual layout in they they is no vberth, instead they have the in the bow.

Can anyone make any comments about these or direct me to where I can find out more about them?

Thanks kindly.

The Cape 28 is a 28.0ft masthead sloop designed by Bob Klusendick and built in wood cold molded or plywood with chine by Nebe Boatworks (South Africa) since 1981.

7 units have been built..

The Cape 28 is a heavy sailboat which is under powered. It is reasonably stable / stiff and has an excellent righting capability if capsized. It is best suited as a bluewater cruising boat. The fuel capacity is originally very small. There is a very short water supply range.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

The Cape Dory 28 is a rugged little cruiser often quoted as having a feel of a larger boat. She combines traditional looks, quality construction and well-mannered sailing characteristics into a package that is offshore capable. As testimony to her seaworthiness, we’ve seen at least one circumnavigation – in 2009 Fred Bickum completed his three year voyage singlehanded in his 1978 Cape Dory, FêNIX .

At her launch in 1974 the Cape Dory 28 marked the beginning of a fruitful twelve year partnership between Cape Dory Yachts and well respected designer Carl Alberg . Between 1974 and 1987, Cape Dory built 388 in their yard in East Taunton, New England, helping the company forge a grand reputation for producing sailboats that are well constructed with excellent sailing characteristics.

Taking a closer look at her hull shape a trained eye can see much of the classic Alberg form. A Swede himself, he was heavily influenced by the sleek Scandinavian folkboats of the early 20th century, and in that regard the 28’s hull is narrow, making for less accomodation volume belowdecks, but the long overhangs seen in earlier Alberg designs are only hinted at, instead they have been toned down in favour of a longer waterline and gaining back some space. The sheerline is graceful with traditionally low freeboard. Beneath the waterline is a full keel with a forefoot cutaway and ending in a keel-hung rudder which completes her classical profile.

Hulls are of solid fiberglass in polyester resin while decks are balsa or plywood cored fiberglass. The build quality is excellent throughout and the quality of her fittings are good. Bronze is used for the through hull fittings and the eight opening ports, though early boats before 1978 had lower quality plastic ports.

Under sail, they are sea kindly, stiff and capable in heavy seas, yet surprisingly quick in light winds. Nine thousand pounds of displacement, a modified full keel and a well-distributed sail plan results in a well balanced boat that tracks easily, is nimble through the tacks yet has enough momentum to push through choppy water.

In summary, if you’re looking for a small cruiser with classic looks and proven offshore potential, but don’t mind foregoing the interior room seen in more modern 28-footers, the Cape Dory 28 may be a good choice.

Buyers Notes

  • Decks are fiberglass with a plywood or in some models balsa core. Check for stress cracking which if neglected can allow moisture into the core. Particularly critical areas include the chainplates and mounting points for deck hardware
  • Check the fuel tanks. Most models have aluminum tanks mounted on wooden cleats that caused pitting in the aluminum, eventually leading to failure. Some models have steel tanks which can be prone to rusting. Note the tanks can be easily accessed via the port seat locker without difficulty.

Product Description

Originally designed in conjunction with the late Capt. Hugh (Buck) Wilde and Diamond City Boatworks in Beaufort, NC in 2008 hull #1 named "NAD 28" is seen pictured below. You can read about this project on the hull truth forum  here . The boat was fitted with twin 300s and topped out at a respectable 47 knots (54mph). Buck noted that she could have been built lighter but was dressed with solid teak decking. He also felt that with more prop tuning and motor adjustment 60 mph would have been achievable.

We have developed a kit for the boat with some slight tweaks. The original was built with a plywood bottom and strip planked sides. We have since converted to cold molded sides as we feel this is an easier method for most builders.  We have also increased the dead-rise by 1 deg from the original hull to 19. See below for construction details, plan and kit pricing. You can download a current complete estimate for the kit and the materials list at the bottom of the page.

Construction Details: The boat and jig kit as described here is designed for plywood/epoxy construction. This proven method produces a strong light hull with excellent stiffness and takes advantage of the accuracy of CNC cut parts. The complete encapsulation of the wood with epoxy creates a very low maintenance and a long-lived boat. Epoxy primer and 2 part polyurethane provide an extremely durable finish.

Above: Note green temporary frames which are removed after the boat is flipped. The Jig kit includes a "Jig Base" as shown which locates the temp frames. The jig base is leveled on the shop floor to create a flat plane. Alternatively the boat can built on a traditional strong back type jig frame.

Once the jig structure is assembled and the keel, side stringers and sheer clamp are installed the bottom is planked followed by the integral chine flat. The sides are cold molded in 2 layers of 6mm marine plywood using the Ashcroft method in which both layers run diagonally in the same direction, the seams in the two layers are staggered.. An integral bracket creates an incredibly strong structure. The plywood bottom stringers extend through cutouts in the transom to form webs for the bracket. The developed bottom shape means that the bottom can be planked with full size plywood panels.

All the wood structure is coated in epoxy to protect it from moisture. The outside of the hull is faired and fiberglassed prior to flipping.

Frequently Asked Questions and modifications: Due to the endless customization and options of a boat this size we have tried to provide all the information the builder will need to produce a strong and good performing hull. Allowances have been made for normal options however construction details are not provided at this time for things such as built in fish boxes or bow seating. The cockpit is drawn as a single level but a step up or bow seating can easily be added by the builder.

Can I use an inboard motor? or Have you designed it for an inboard? No, not at this time. This design is specific to outboards. We would like to offer this design for an inboard but there is a lot of design time that goes into each design and we're just waiting for the right builder(s) who would like to fund this modification. If we get enough interest by builders wanting an inboard version we will certainly get it done.

Plywood is nice but I want to build it in foam can I use   foam? Note that one of the advantages of cold molding is all of the permanent structure which is already built into the jig. Once the boat is flipped all of the bottom structure is already in place. With a foam hull everything must come out after the boat is flipped (the whole jig is temporary) so the that inside skin laminate can be applied. Bulkheads and stringers are then put into the hull. This method uses a lot more material for the jig which may not be reusable due to the tumblehome in the stern of the boat which prevents the boat from simply lifting off the jig. That said, if you would like a cnc jig for the boat to use for foam construction, contact us and we can provide pricing for the design changes and jig design for all temp. frames and battens needed for foam planking.

Study Plans:   $45.00 (available in hardcopy only) Full Construction Plans including Full size Templates:   $450.00

All plan sheets for construction plus full size mylar templates (mylar templates are taped together lengthwise using strike up marks on 12″ centers and used to transfer frames and jig shapes to plywood) Plan sheets include 16 x ARCH D size full color construction drawings showing every detail of construction.   Study Plans   are simply smaller 11×17 print outs of all of the plan sheets and of course do not include the templates. There is no table of offsets because the full size templates make them redundant. Trace the parts directly onto your plywood and cut out with a jig saw.  Included are full size outlines for all of the parts that we offer in the CNC kit. The frames and bulkheads and drawn with the notches located and sized for the side stringers. Stations are given in halves. When tracing your parts on the wood you will simply flip the patterns or make a scrap template to mirror the frame outline for port/starboard. The use of the template patterns eliminates any need for lofting and ensures that your framework will be accurate and true.

*Mylar is drafting film, which while expensive, is totally stable and practically tear proof. It is practically transparent, making it easy to orient on your plywood grain and allows for it to be used for both sides on one sheet. Paper templates of this size would change too much with changes in humidity.

Jig Kit:   $6,200   The CL-28 Jig Kit includes all plan sheets and all CNC cut parts listed below. All temporary frames are cut from 3/4" Birch Plywood and all permanent structure is Okume or Meranti BS1088 marine plywood. We only use the highest quality plywood we can find. Contact us for pictures of our stock if you like or to compare with local sources as not all marine plywood is created equal.

Jig Kit includes: All permanent and temporary bulkheads/jig frames and jig base (as shown above). Plywood bottom stringers, chine flat (reverse chine), transom lamination layers, transom camber jig, bracket transom lamination layers and jig for laminating the stem.

The jig kit is designed to jump start the build allowing the builder to start with accurately cut frames and bottom stringers onto which to lay side stringers and get on to planking as fast as possible. This is not a complete kit.

Jig Kit does NOT include: Plywood need for planking the hull sides or bottom. Plywood needed for the cockpit sole, fore-deck or side deck. Solid timber for hull side stringers, gunwales, Inwales, Carlin or keel and stem. Plywood parts for center console or leaning post.

Hull Planking and additional Plywood:

We can supply the additional plywood needed to complete the hull.  We also sell epoxy and can supply fiberglass products. These are typically drop shipped in larger quantities. Click the button below for a current estimate for the CL-28 Jig Kit and additional plywood materials. Solid timber for stringers and keel should still be sourced locally.

Description

This simple-yet-elegant down-East style cruiser has nearly a cult following. In the 28 years that Cape Dory Yachts was in business, they built over 2,800 sailboats and over 300 powerboats: 223 of those were of the 28’ variety. That said, it’s a treat to see one of them here in the Pacific Northwest. Many Cape Dories were designed by the renown naval architect, Carl Alberg, and you can see that influence in the simplicity and clean lines of the 28’.

Enthusiasts rave about the “incomparable seakeeping abilities,” and the “simple elegance of a classic interior with spacious cockpit and wide, sure-footed decks.” This particular case is an excellent example of what they’re talking about. CAPER pleases the eye with that salty East coast look. The bow is high, and the rub rail is a rope! When you step aboard, she feels as a boat should feel underfoot: neither tender nor stiff, but hardy and ready to go. The interior is simple and clean. Very no-nonsense, yet dignified and comfortable. One can imagine pulling off the yellow slicker, the sou’wester, and the gum boots on the aft deck, then stepping inside to the smell of Cook doing up a mess of lobster. Or, in a more West Coast style, shedding the rubber boots, the Helly Hanson, and sitting down to a feast of crab and halibut. Either way, it does the heart good. You can see why this was the most popular powerboat that Cape Dory ever made.

With easily $15,000 worth of work done over the last two years, this boat is in the best shape she’s seen in 20 years. So, hum your favourite sea shanty and come take a look. It will be time well spent.

At the forepeak, a chain locker stores rode and is accessible only from the outer deck. Inside, behind the chain locker is a v-berth with insert to make the bed a full triangle. Aft of that to port is the head. Across from the head, to starboard, is the galley. Two steps up takes you to the main cabin. To port is an L-shaped settee with oval wooden table. To starboard is the helm station with an adjustable captain’s chair. The engine is located beneath the main cabin. Aft of the main cabin, through a sliding wooden door is the outer aft deck. There is a bimini over the deck. Under the deck is storage. On the deck is a fiberglass storage box. Aft of the transom is a teak swim grid that runs the full length athwartship. A fiberglass sailing dinghy is stored on the swim grid. There is 360° access outside the cabin via wide walkaround decks and teak handrails.

Who are the luckiest people in the world? At least for theater fans, the answer is “people who need people,” a line made famous well over half a century ago by Barbra Streisand in the original production of the musical “Funny Girl.”

THEATER REVIEW

WHAT: “Funny Girl: the Musical” by Maine State Music Theatre

WHERE: Pickard Theater, Bowdoin College Campus, Brunswick

REVIEWED: June 28 (matinee); continues through July 13

TICKETS: Starting at $93

CONTACT: 207-725-8769, msmt.org

On the heels of the show’s recent Broadway revival, the Maine State Music Theatre has opened a spirited production of the classic musical on its home stage at the Pickard Theater on the campus of Bowdoin College in Brunswick.

The show primarily captures the rousing excitement of early musical theater while unavoidably making us think about how it launched the career of Streisand. At a lengthy but enjoyable two-and-one-half hours, plus intermission, it’s a show that still charms with its memorable songs, old-style comedy and bittersweet love story.

The impressive production, directed and choreographed by Kenny Ingram and with the time-honored music of Jule Styne, lyrics by Bob Merrill and book by Isobel Lennart, tells the semi-fictionalized story of Fanny Brice, a real-life figure who rose from humble origins to showbiz stardom as a give-it-everything-you’ve-got performer in the early 20th century.

At first socially awkward and vulnerable, but with a unique talent and an admirable determination to succeed, Fanny gained the attention of famed impresario Florenz Ziegfeld, Jr. and went on to star in many of his glitzy stage shows. At the same time, Fanny’s personal life was a bit of a rollercoaster ride.

Jenna Lea Rosen takes the lead role and scores comedically with her initially wide-eyed approach to Fanny’s personal and professional challenges. Armed with a feisty “New Yawk” accent, the actress easily takes charge of backstage, front stage and offstage scenes. Her vocals are compelling on both comic numbers (“Sadie, Sadie” and “Rat-Tat-Tat-Tat”) and in more intimate moments (“People” and “Don’t Rain On My Parade”). Advertisement

Douglas Raymond Williams plays Fanny’s handsome rogue of a love interest who brings her to a fuller life but fails her in the end. His opera-trained vocals alongside Rosen (“I Want to be Seen With You” and “You are Woman, I am Man”) establish both the heat and uncertainties within their relationship.

Among the many standout secondary actors and choristers, Tyler Johnson-Campion is a tap-dancing whiz. His work with Sue Cella, who plays Fanny’s mom, is a treat on “Who Taught Her Everything.” Cella also has some fun moments squabbling with a competitive friend played by Maine State favorite Charis Leos.

Tommy Betz shines as a Tenor and David Girolmo returns to the Pickard stage as the stern but supportive Mr. Ziegfeld. Jeremiah Valentino Porter gets to toot a hot horn on “Cornet Man.”

The Maine State Music Theatre Orchestra, led by Jason Wetzel, mixes up the period flavors with a newer Broadway expansiveness. The costumes designed by J. Theresa Bush and scenic design by Jeffrey D. Kmiec take the audience back to a distant era when musical theater and its early stars were on the rise.

That cape 28 is a good looking cruising boat. Having the whole forward compartment as a head/sail-locker makes a lot of sense on a cruising boat.
