Two of the students remained on the boat while the 12-year-old boy fell into the water during the exercise, police say. The 18-year-old instructor, who was in a Zodiac boat, which is an inflatable boat, pulled the boy from the water into his boat.

The boy, who was seated on the side of the Zodiac when the boat started to move forward, fell into the water again and became entangled in the boat propeller, police say.

The instructor pulled the boy back onto another boat and performed CPR. The harbormaster also responded to the scene and gave the boy CPR.

First responders arrived to the scene and the Centerport Fire Department transported the boy to Huntington Hospital. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

An instructor was also admitted to Huntington Hospital to be treated for shock. The other children did not receive medical attention, police say.

Editor's note: The boy was 12 years old, not 10 as originally reported. Patch apologizes for this error.

12-Year-Old New York Boy Killed by Boat Propeller While Taking Sailing Lessons

The boy fell into the water again after being rescued by his 18-year-old instructor's boat but became entangled in the propeller

A 12-year-old from Norfolk, New York, died after he was struck by a propeller during a boating safety course at a Long Island yacht club.

At the Centerport Yacht Club early Tuesday afternoon, three students, all wearing life jackets, were taking part in a sailing class during which their boat was intentionally capsized into the water on the North Shore as part of the lesson, according to a statement released by the Suffolk Police Department.

During the exercise, two of the three children were able to remain in the boat. The 12-year-old was pulled out of the water by his 18-year-old instructor and put into the instructor’s inflatable Zodiac boat, which had an outboard motor.

When the instructor accelerated the boat, the 12-year-old boy fell into the water again and “became entangled in the propeller of the Zodiac,” the police statement read.

“The instructor pulled the boy back into the boat and performed CPR until EMTs arrived,” Suffolk Police Assistant Commissioner Justin Meyers explained in a press conference.

The child was taken to Huntington Hospital where he would later die from injuries to the chest.

The two other children did not receive medical aid, but the instructor was admitted to the hospital for shock. Police told local media outlets the instructor was “traumatized” by the events. “He’s in shock, he’s very upset, his family is with him,” Sgt. James Scimone of the Suffolk County Police said. “The instructor is a young instructor, and he did everything he was taught to do.”

“He’s in shock, he’s very upset, his family is with him,” Sgt. James Scimone of the Suffolk County Police said. “The instructor is a young instructor, and he did everything he was taught to do.”

Police say they are investigating the incident as an accident, but say no one is at fault.

The 12-year-old boy’s death marks the second time in two days a child was killed by a boat’s propeller. On Monday, a 12-year-old girl in New Hampshire was killed after she was run over by a power boat being driven by her father, local police said.

Founded in 1947, the Centerport Yacht Club runs a sailing school and camp, and provides Junior sailing classes for ages 5 and up. The facility operates more than 120 sailing yachts, including 50 power yachts and 70 power boats.

12-year-old dies during a sailing lesson at a Long Island yacht club

  • Katy Stickland

An investigation is underway after a 12-year-old boy died during a sailing lesson at the Centerport Yacht Club early yesterday afternoon (18 July)

A 12-year-old boy has been killed after being struck by a propeller during a sailing lesson at the Centerport Yacht Club on Long Island, New York.

Three children, all wearing life jackets, were taking part in the class when their boat was capsized as a controlled part of the lesson, according to a statement released by the Suffolk Police Department.

Two of the children remained with the boat, while the 12-year-old fell into the water.

He was subsequently recovered by the 18-year-old instructor, who was operating a small Zodiac inflatable boat.

“An 18-year old instructor who was operating a small Zodiac inflatable boat was able to pull the child from the water and onto the Zodiac,” said the police statement.

“The child was seated on the side of the Zodiac when the instructor started to move forward. The boy again fell into the water and became entangled in the propeller of the Zodiac.”

The instructor immediately entered the water, and with the help of another instructor managed to pull the 12-year-old from the water.

They brought the child to shore and began CPR before a paramedic from Centerport Fire Department responded.

The child was transported to Huntington Hospital where he died from his injuries.

Sgt James Scimone of the Suffolk County Police told local media that the instructor did everything possible.

“He’s in shock, he’s very upset, his family is with him. The instructor is a young instructor, and he did everything he was taught to do,” said Sgt Scimone.

Investigations are ongoing.

The accident happened at around 2.30pm yesterday afternoon (July 18).

Centerport Yacht Club was founded in 1947 and is a focal point for the boating community on Long Island’s North Shore, according to the club’s website.

This is the second child to have died in a boating incident this week.

On Monday, a 12-year-old girl died on Newfound Lake in Bridgewater, New Hampshire after being run over by a boat driven by her father.

Zoe Anderson was learning to waterski and fell off.

According to New Hampshire Marine Patrol officials, her father became distracted when his hat was blown off and accidentally ran over his daughter.

Boy Taking Sailing Lessons on Long Island Is Hit by Boat Propeller, Dies

The 12-year-old boy fell backward into the water and got tangled in the moving boat propeller, by greg cergol and michael george and pei-sze cheng • published july 18, 2017 • updated on july 20, 2017 at 12:38 am.

A 12-year-old boy has died after being hit by a boat propeller at a Long Island yacht club Tuesday, police say.

The boy was among three children getting a sailing lesson at the Centerport Yacht Club Tuesday afternoon, and the sailboat was intentionally capsized as part of a lesson, according to Suffolk Police Assistant Commissioner Justin Meyers.

The kids, who were all wearing life vests, were plucked from the water into an adjacent motor boat, a Zodiac.

As the boat headed back to the dock, it accelerated and turned, hitting a wave, police said. The 12-year-old boy fell backward into the water and got tangled in the moving boat propeller.

It all happened in seconds, police said.

The instructor performed CPR on the boy, who was taken to Huntington Hospital, where he died. Police initially said the boy was 10 but later corrected his age to 12.

A witness was also treated for shock after seeing the victim extricated.

Police say they're investigating the boy's death as a horrific accident and say no one is at fault.

"The instructor is a young instructor, and he did everything he was taught to do," a police official said at a news briefing. "A terrible accident happened today. Everyone feels bad about it."

The 18-year-old instructor, who was interviewed at the scene, is said to be distraught.

Boy, 12, killed in boating accident off Long Island, NY

He was hit by the boat's propeller, officials said.

— -- A 12-year-old boy was killed in a boating accident in New York after he was struck by the boat's propeller, according to authorities.

Around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, the U.S. Coast Guard received a call stating that a child had fallen into the water near the Centerport Yacht Club on Long Island, a Coast Guard spokesperson told ABC News. A harbor master on site attempted to give the child CPR, the spokesperson said.

The boy was one of three students who were participating in sailing lessons, said Suffolk County Police Assistant Commissioner Justin Meyers. The boat was intentionally capsized as part of the lesson, Meyers said. Two of the students were able to remain in the boat during the exercise, he added.

The instructor, who was in a inflatable Zodiac boat, pulled the boat out of the water and into his boat, Meyers said. The boy then fell out of the Zodiac boat and was struck by its propeller, Meyers said.

The instructor then pulled the boy back into the boat and administered CPR until EMS arrived, Meyers said.

The harbor master and Centerport Fire Department were on the scene, the Coast Guard spokesperson said.

The boy was then transported to Huntington Hospital, according to the Coast Guard. He was pronounced dead at the hospital, Meyers said.

The boy's death marks the second time in two days a child was killed by a boat's propeller. On Monday, a 12-year-old girl in New Hampshire was killed after she was run over by a power boat being driven by her father, local police said.

Cops: 12-year-old boy dies in Centerport boating accident

centerport yacht club boating accident

A 12-year-old boy died when a lesson in sailing safety took a tragic turn Tuesday.

Suffolk County police said the Northport boy was in the middle of a group sailing lesson at the Centerport Yacht Club, at 33 Beach Plum Drive, when he was struck by a boat propeller.

The town harbor master received a call around 3 p.m. about a child injured underneath a boat, a town spokesman said.

Three children, all wearing life vests, were taking part in a sailing lesson when their sailboat was capsized as a controlled part of the lesson, police said. Capsizing safety is an essential and standard component of sailing education for both adults and children.

As part of the lesson, the fatally injured boy had been in the water. The 18-year-old instructor, who is also from the Northport area, plucked him from the water and onto a small inflatable Zodiac boat, said Det. Sgt. James Scimone at a news conference outside the Centerport Yacht Club.

The boy was sitting on the edge of the boat and fell when the boat accelerated, becoming caught in the Zodiac’s propeller.

“It was a matter of seconds,” Scimone said.

The boy suffered “massive injuries to the chest” and did not appear to be breathing. The instructor jumped into the water and with the aid of a second person, pulled the boy into another boat and began to administer CPR, Scimone said.

EMTs from the Centerport Fire Department assisted onshore and brought the boy to Huntington Hospital, a department spokesman said. The boy was pronounced dead there, police said.

An instructor was also admitted to the hospital and treated for shock.

The other two children, who were interviewed by police, were upset, but “doing pretty well,” Scimone said. Neither child received medical aid.

Police are continuing to investigate, and Scimone said they are treating the death as an accident. The child’s identity was not released Tuesday.

“It’s a horrific accident. . . . Nobody is at fault,” Scimone said. “The instructor was doing everything he was supposed to.”

The Centerport Yacht Club did not return requests for comment.

12 year-old New York boy killed by boat propeller during sailing lesson

Three boys in a sailing class at Centerport Yacht Club on the north side of Long Island, New York were out sailing in Northport Harbor Tuesday afternoon 18 July, 2017. Their boat was capsized on purpose as part of a man overboard exercise. Two of the boys stayed with the sailboat. The third boy was picked up by an 18 year old sailing instructor on a RIB (Rigid Inflatable Boat).

When the boat operator began to gradually accelerate the boat, the boy fell overboard and was fatally injured by the propeller.

Details are still sketchy, but some accounts say his life jacket was entrapped in the propeller and he was struck in the chest by the propeller.

The 18 year old instructor was able to get the boy back in the boat and performed CPR on him.

One news report mentioned the yacht club instructors were all trained in CPR.

The injured boy, from Northport, was taken to Huntington Hospital where he died. The boy killed was later identified as Ryan John Weiss of Greenlawn, New York.

Propeller guards are sometimes used to prevent youth sailing propeller accidents such as this one. We talk further about their use near the bottom of this post.

The instructed that performed CPR on the boy suffered shock and was taken to the hospital.

The boat was a Zodiac powered by a Yamaha outboard motor.

We enlarged the image of the motor from the image above and sharpened it to create the image below.

The logo on the RIB sleeve confirms the boat is a Zodiac.

The accident has been widely covered in the New York press. Local news stations have posted some excellent video coverage as seen below.

News reports mentioned many parents rushing and running to the yacht club to retrieve their children.

A News12 video noted there are thousands of Long Island kid in sailing camp and boating camp every year.

Aerial photos of the water near the yacht club show the water crowded with boats.

Map of the Yacht Club and area

Youth Sailing is a close knit community. We have already been contacted today by several people with ties to sailing clubs in the U.S. and abroad with concerns about this accident. We suspect the governing bodies of U.S. sailing organizations are already agonizing over it and wondering how to proceed.

Propeller guards are frequently mentioned as a way to prevent these accidents. Below we discuss some of the aspects involved with respect to this specific accident and the organizations (yacht club providing youth sailing instruction) and manufacturers involved (Yamaha and Zodiac). Not mentioned here is US Sailing, the national sailing body that has generally been silent on the issue of propeller guards and “Rather than mandate propeller guards on all boats, the (US Sailing Government Relations) Committee supported customized solutions based on the situational marine environment.”

Could a Propeller Guard Have Prevented This Accident?

Propeller Solutions Propeller Guard

Propeller Solutions Propeller Guard

The purpose and uses of the RIB in question, the speeds at which it is used, and the environment in which it is used are more variables to consider.

While it is still very early, we do know (or at least think we know) a few things.

  • The boy fell from the RIB when it was beginning to accelerate.
  • It is very hard to be fatally injured by a propeller when you fall off a boat moving forward slowly with a propeller guard on it.
  • Gowrie Group Insurance manages a company that provides insurance to many yacht clubs. Gowrie recommends “that propeller guards be installed on all outboard motors used for teaching junior sailing, coaching sailing, running races, and supporting recreational water sports.” Gowrie issued a press release to that effect back in 2013.
  • Propeller guards are widely used by youth sailing clubs in Australia.
  • Zodiac sells their boats with propeller guards on them for use as yacht tenders (they double as life boats for the yachts).
  • Over time we have seen many boat propeller accidents involving coaching boats / escort boats with youth sailing, rowing, sculling, open water swimming, canoe racing, and other similar activities.
  • A range of propeller guards are available to fit most mid-sized outboard motors, like the one involved in this accident.
  • Propeller guards are available at what seems like a reasonable cost (in the price range of $200 to $600 for outboards typically used on boats like this one).

That said, we cannot say the boat should have had a propeller guard on it, because all the facts are not in. However we can say that if that boat was regularly used in the youth sailing environment as a coaches boat or escort boat, we would likely not be writing this post if a safety analysis with access to the information above had been performed on the boat to see if its propeller should have been guarded or not.

For those wishing to learn more about propeller guards, we have pages listing the benefits of propeller guards and the objections raised against prop guards , and a list of links to propeller guard manufacturers .

As to propeller guard manufacturers with considerable experience with youth sailing applications, Midcoast Marine of Australia has long been tied to this market and to Surf Lifesaving (small RIBS used as rescue boats). MidCoast Marine’s guards are stainless steel with vanes down the sides of them. Here in the U.S., PropGuard is likely the best known in youth sailing. They made some ground with Gowrie when Gowrie was promoting guards in youth sailing applications. PropGuard’s guards are made from polypropylene (a high strength plastic). Midcoast Marine has the most “hands on” experience with youth sailiing because they work directly with sailing clubs and other organizations (predominately in Australia) while PropGuard sells through distributors. MariTech has been building steel “cage type” propeller guards for houseboats. rescue boats, and applications like escort boats in the U.S. for many years. MariTech’s guards can provide protection from both the front and from the rear.

What Yamaha Said in 2012

Yamaha UK Pro Outboard

Yamaha UK Pro Outboard with Yamaha propeller guard

In October 2012 we became aware of Yamaha’s new propeller guards and several statements they made about the effectiveness of these guards and how they were necessary when people were in the water.

While Yamaha started with small guards for small outboard motors (25 horsepower), they quickly jumped up to providing larger guards and some Yamaha publications said propeller guards were available for all of Yamaha outboard motors.

These statements were starkly different to previous negative statements made by the boating industry about propeller guards, so in mid October 2016 we published a series of three posts announcing Yamaha’s guards and saluting them for making these guards available on their outboard motors. A few days later, Yamaha became aware of our posts and erased all references to their propeller guards. It was as if they had never existed.

We plead with Yamaha to repost their materials, but when they failed to respond, we published several clips from their materials we had previously archived.

Those materials are now visible at Yamaha Possible Coverup of Propeller Guard Documents Exposed .

Interestingly, at the same time Yamaha was posting information telling everybody how great their propeller guards were in the UK, they were testifying just the opposite about propeller guards in a U.S. legal case as seen below.

It seems a bit odd that Yamaha could make all the denials about the hazards of propellers below in a legal case in the United States, while simultaneously making claims about how great their guards were in the UK and how they were essential when people were in the water around the boat in flooded conditions. YMUS in the image below refers to Yamaha Motor Corporation USA.

Police Call Death Of 12-Year-Old Boy During Sailing Lesson On LI An Accident

July 19, 2017 / 6:56 AM EDT / CBS New York

CENTERPORT, N.TY. (CBSNewYork) -- Police investigating the death of a 12-year-old boy are calling it a "tragic accident" after he was killed during a sailing lesson on Long Island.

It happened Tuesday at the Centerport Yacht Club in Suffolk County.

At around 3 p.m., the boy and two other children were doing a "man overboard drill" in the waters of Northport Harbor, practicing what to do when a sailboat capsizes. All of them were wearing life jackets.

Two of the children returned on to the sailboat, but police said an 18-year-old instructor pulled the boy into a Zodiac inflatable boat equipped with an outboard motor. Police said while on the ride back to shore, the boy fell out and was struck by the boat's propeller.

"He became entangled in the propeller, causing massive injuries to the chest," Sgt. James Scimone said.

The instructor pulled the boy back into the boat and performed CPR until EMTs arrived. The boy was rushed to Huntington Hospital, where he died.

Police say no one was at fault.

"We are investigating this thing strictly as an accident," Scimone said.

Meanwhile, the community and the 18-year-old instructor are now distraught.

"He's in shock, he's very upset, his family is with him," Sgt. James Scimone said.

Another instructor who also tried to perform CPR on the boy was also taken to the hospital for shock.

The name of the boy has not been released.

Roman Titov set out in his 33ft Colin Archer-type cutter, Vperyod from Ullapool Harbour in Scotland on 13 December 2023.

No one has heard from him since.

On 6 January 2024, wreckage from Vperyod washed up at Loch Inver, prompting a search for him by the emergency services, including HM Coastguard, the RNLI and police divers.

Police Scotland, which is co-ordinating the operation, say his family are aware.

“Inquiries are ongoing following the recovery of wreckage from a yacht in the Strathan Bay area near Lochinver.

“Police divers along with HM Coastguard and the RNLI carried out extensive searches.

“It is believed the yacht left Ullapool harbour on Wednesday 13 December with one person, a man, on board.

“The man is missing and concerns are growing for his welfare. His family are aware,” said a Police Scotland spokesperson.

Roman Titov is in his late 50s and served as a merchant navy navigating officer in the Barents Sea before working as a chief engineer at a Moscow yacht club.

He was in Scotland after Vperyod was dismasted on 1 January 2022, 200 miles off the north-west coast of Scotland.

Roman had been sailing south from Norway in a bid to qualify for the 2022 Golden Globe Race , but instead, he became caught up in one of the worst storms in recent years.

The 33ft yacht pitchpoled in the storm, and Roman Titov survived as he was clipped on by his harness, although he received several blows to the face.

The mast and bowsprit were lost and there was damage both on deck and down below; he lost all power and although he had an Iridium satellite phone, he was unable to find any satellites to send a distress call.

It took him two days to bail out all the water. He had deployed two sea anchors and the rigging and mast overboard helped stabilise the yacht.

He then managed to clear the remains of the mast and recovered what was left of the bowsprit and genoa furling gear, breaking a rib in the process.

Roman Titov then prepared a jury rig, using his 5m spinnaker pole, and sailed for 17 days to Ullapool in Loch Broom.

He left Vperyod at the Johnson and Loftus boatyard and returned to Moscow to raise money for repairs, but weeks later the Russians invaded Ukraine and, for the next two years, Roman waited patiently to return to his yacht, saving money where he could.

He arrived back in Scotland in November 2023 and, with the help of the Johnson and Loftus boatyard, patched up Vperyod which he intended to sail to Istanbul to make further repairs.

The boat was relaunched on 11 December 2023, and Roman Titov set out two days later.

The wreckage discovered at Loch Inver has been identified as coming from Yperyod .

Solo sailor, Roger Taylor, met Roman and initially translated his account of Yperyod ‘s dismasting for Yachting Monthly .

Roger subsequently wrote an article about the repairs to Yperyod , which will be appearing in May’s issue of Practical Boat Owner magazine.

12-year-old boy dies in Long Island boating accident

CENTERPORT, Long Island (WABC) -- A 12-year-old boy is dead after he was struck by a boat propeller in the waters off Long Island Tuesday.

The incident happened in Northport Harbor at the Centerport Yacht Club around 3 p.m., while the victim was taking a sailing lesson with two other students, all wearing life vests.

"We were just pulling in, actually when they brought him to the dock. It was terrible," said Scott Koolik, a boater.

Koolik said the scene was shocking.

The bleeding child was rushed to the dock. There were desperate attempts to save him as distraught parents raced to the harbor to comfort their children.

"We saw all those kids, we didn't know what was going on yet, the little kids were just taking their lessons and stuff, and then we saw the police and the rush to the dock. We pulled in and we just couldn't believe what we'd seen. It's a shame," Koolik said.

Authorities say the boy was struck by the propeller on the outboard engine of an inflatable boat, known as a Zodiac.

It happened after he and two other junior sailors were practicing a capsizing drill in a small sailboat called a Feva.

The boy was pulled from the water and into the Zodiac by his 18-year-old instructor, but investigators say he apparently lost his balance.

"When that Zodiac went to accelerate to bring the boy to safety, that child again fell off the Zodiac and became entangled in the propeller," said Det. Sgt. James Scimone, Suffolk County Police Department.

By some accounts, the boy's life preserver may have been caught up in the propeller. The child suffered massive injuries to his chest.

The instructor performed CPR until EMS arrived, and the child was rushed to Huntington Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

There was no immediate comment from the Centerport Yacht Club, which authorities say runs the sailing program.

The instructor was not identified Monday night, but was said to be inconsolable.

"Imagine the parents, it's just awful," Koolik said. "When you have children, you're doing a summer activity, it's the last thing you'd expect. I'm sure it's no one's fault, accidents happen. But it's awful. There's definitely a dark cloud over everything."
