How much does it cost to charter a yacht?

There are many things to consider and first time charterers can be left confused, that's why we've created a comprehensive guide to yacht charter prices (with a checklist).

charter cost explained banner

The good news: It’s easy to grasp the basics of yacht charter pricing. And with one of our experts in your corner, we can help you more accurately estimate the cost of your next once-in-a-lifetime vacation.

The cost of a yacht charter is dependent on a number of factors, including the type of yacht, the charter destination, local taxes, and the base cost. (If the yacht has a celebrity owner, well that too, can add to the cost.)

Therefore, yacht charters have a wide range of base prices. That’s why charters can cost from $10,000 per week on smaller sailing yachts and catamarans, up to $150,000+ per week on the most luxurious motor superyachts.

What else can you expect to pay? This overview – a part of our planning resource, the Charter Advice Guide – offers an in-depth look at charter yacht costs.

Yacht Charter Price Structure: “All-Inclusive” vs “Plus Expenses”

In the world of yachting, two types of crewed yacht charters are available to you – “All-Inclusive” and “Plus Expenses” charter experiences. What do these terms mean exactly? Here’s a quick look:

  • All-Inclusive Yacht Charters – Some charters (mainly catamaran and monohull charters in the Virgin Islands) offer all-inclusive rates. That means rates are based on the number of guests, and they include all food and drink, water sports, and fuel costs. Dockage and taxes, though, are usually charged separately.
  • Plus Expenses Charters – Rates for larger motor yachts do not include running expenses, which must be paid separately. For these luxury charters, the base price is for the yacht only. Additional expenses, i.e. food, bar, fuel, dockage, port taxes, and other expenses, are charged separately. Most frequently, the running expenses are paid by an Advance Provisioning Allowance, or APA, which is typically 35% of the base price; this is an amount that’s paid prior to the charter.

Our chart below offers a quick overview of what’s included in both of these types of charters.

Factors that Affect Yacht Charter Prices

Since charter yachts are privately owned, prices are set by the owner. This can explain, in part, the wide range of differences in price between boats of similar lengths. Yet, several other factors can significantly impact price, including:

  • The Yacht – The year the boat was built, the builder, previous owners, and the boat’s selection of water toys can also increase the cost of a yacht. Boats can also develop a reputation, i.e. the largest or most luxurious, or having a famous builder or previous owner. Reputation can also affect pricing.
  • Season – Prices typically increase in the high season – i.e. high summer in the Mediterranean or winter in the Caribbean – and decrease in low seasons.
  • Destination – Your charter destination also plays a role in charter cost. For example, prices increase in areas without large charter fleets (i.e. the Galapagos), whereas Bahamas yacht charters,   BVI charters , or Mediterranean yacht charter are priced more competitively.

Additional Costs Considerations on Yacht Charter

In addition to the cost associated with running the yacht and provisioning, there are a number of other costs that must be considered. These are the most significant:

Advanced Provisioning Allowance

The APA on Plus Expenses charters equals roughly 35% of the yacht’s base price. This is a fee that’s collected prior to charter, and it’s similar to an expense account the captain can access during the charter. At the end of the charter, you will receive a detailed accounting of your APA account, plus any unused APA funds in cash.

In the case of overages, you may be required to replenish the APA account during the charter. This can be done with cash, although many choose to set up accounts with their charter brokers , which can be accessed if requested by the captain.

Taxes and Value Added Tax (VAT)

Most boats – whether all-inclusive or Plus Expenses – will not include local taxes or a Value Added Tax into their charter rate. The charterer will be responsible for paying those taxes. Taxes range significantly by destination; here’s a look at some of yachting’s most popular destinations:

  • The Bahamas – Tax: 4% plus 10% VAT
  • BVI – Tax: between $6 and $16 per person per day, depending on the flag of the boat
  • Croatia – VAT: 13%
  • Florida – Tax: 6% for Broward County, 7% for Miami-Dade County
  • France – VAT: 20%, however, 10% can be applied when an itinerary includes International Waters
  • Greece – VAT: 12%
  • Italy – VAT: 22%, however 6.6% (over 24m) and 8.8% (under 24m) can be applied when an itinerary includes International Waters
  • Montenegro – NO VAT
  • New England – NO TAX
  • Spain – VAT: 21%
  • Turkey – NO VAT

Charterers can purchase cancellation and curtailment insurance – which is similar to traveler’s insurance. This insurance can help cover costs if a charterer must cancel or shorten the charter. Charter brokers can help you weigh insurance options, and often offer several different options.

Crew Gratuity

While crew gratuity is certainly not mandatory, it is recommended, particularly if you were truly impressed with your charter experience. In general, crew gratuity is roughly 15-20% of the base charter rate, which is handed to the captain at the conclusion of your charter.

Delivery Fees

While these fees do not apply on most charters, you may be asked to pay delivery costs if you are not chartering in the yacht’s normal cruising ground. In most cases, you will only be required to cover the fuel for the trip.

Additional Charter Cost FAQs

What are standard private charter yacht prices?

There are a number of factors that affect charter yacht pricing. However, on average, a week-long private yacht charter costs anywhere from $10,000 on luxurious sailing yachts and catamarans, and up to $150,000 for superyachts.

What affects charter yacht prices?

There are several things that influence how much your yacht charter will cost. The type of vessel, charter destination, length of trip, base cost, time of year, and local taxes all make a difference.

How much does it cost for a crewed vessel?

Charter yacht prices do increase when hiring a crew along with the boat. At Worldwide Boat, we offer two types of crewed charter experiences: all-inclusive and plus expenses. An all-inclusive charter yacht includes accommodation for all guests, food and drink, water sport activities, and fuel costs – dockage fees and taxes are charged separately. A plus expenses experience accounts for just the yacht’s base price. Things like food, drinks, fuel, dockages, taxes, and other expenses are charged separately and are usually estimated to be about 35% of the base price.

What’s included in all-inclusive boat charters?

At Worldwide Boat, your all-inclusive charter experience includes a diligent and friendly crew, water toys, food, drinks, fuel, water and electric services, and occasionally diving experiences.

What are some additional charter boat costs to consider?

After finding a base price you’re comfortable with and evaluating your package, you’ll also want to consider delivery fees, crew gratuity, insurance fees, taxes, and Advanced Provisioning Allowance rates. If you are responsible for these fees, your crew will handle the necessary transactions on your behalf.

What does it cost to rent a 100- foot yacht charter?

This depends on what type of vessel you’re looking at and how long you’ll need it for. The average weekly cost of a 100-foot sailing yacht is between $50,000-100,000. A weekly 80-foot catamaran charter runs around $40,000-100,000, and a week-long 100-foot motor yacht rental is anywhere between $50,000-80,000.

Does the price to rent a yacht change depending on what type of boat it is?

Yes. Worldwide Boat offers sailing yachts, catamarans, and motor yachts. All of these vessels have different capabilities, but there are other factors that determine the price beyond what type of boat you choose. The year the boat was built, owner, availability of water toys, onboard amenities, and the ship’s reputation can all change how much the ship is priced at.

When is the high season for yacht charters?

The price of a yacht fluctuates depending on the season. A Mediterranean yacht charter cost rises in the summer and drops in the winter, whereas Caribbean boat charter prices are high during the winter and lower in the summer months.

How does my destination affect charter yacht cost?

The more remote an area is, the more expensive it will be to charter a yacht there. That’s because prices go up in areas that have fewer boats. If you were to travel somewhere like the Galapagos, which isn’t a typical yacht destination, you’d pay more than you would if you were traveling to the Caribbean.

How much do I tip the crew when reviewing my yacht charter expenses?

It’s not required that you tip your crew, but it is recommended and appreciated. If you had an enjoyable experience it’s considered polite to tip your crew anywhere from 15-20% at the end of your charter.

In fact, you might be surprised to know that the cost of chartering one may be less than you think. In this article, we have researched the average charter rates of superyachts, from the cheapest to the most expensive.

Chartering a superyacht can cost anywhere from $40,000 to over $2 million per week, plus expenses. Smaller superyachts measuring under 30 meters have a weekly charter rate of around $43,000, while megayachts measuring 80 meters and over have an average rate of $1.8 million a week.

When choosing a superyacht for your charter, there are a variety of options you can choose from—may it be small yachts to megayachts, classic or modern yachts, or whether it is sailing or motor-operated, there's a specific type for your needs and preferences. Let's learn below how the type of yacht affects the overall chartering costs.

  • The cheapest superyacht you can charter is a small sailing superyacht with an average cost of $43,000 per week. The most expensive is a megayacht, on which a week's trip can cost millions of dollars.

Chartering a superyacht can cost between $40,000 and $2 million per week, the type of superyachts can affect charter costs, your chosen destination can influence chartering costs.

Chartering a superyacht can actually be more affordable than you think. When it comes to the cost breakdown, there are a few key factors to consider.

(varies based on distance and speed)
€500 - €2,000 per day
(varies based on location and yacht size)

The charter fee depends on the size of the yacht

The charter fee is the base cost for renting the yacht and typically includes the use of the yacht, crew salaries, and insurance. The cost of the charter fee can vary greatly depending on the size and type of yacht, as well as the location and time of year.

Smaller superyachts measuring under 30 meters will have a weekly charter rate somewhere around €40,000 (around $43,000), while yachts between 30 and 40 meters will weigh in at an average of €70,895 (around $77,000) per week. On the other hand, mega yachts measuring 80 meters and over have an average rate of €1.7 million (or around $1.8 million) a week.

The Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA) is typically 30% of the charter fee

The Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA) is an additional fee that covers expenses such as food, drinks, fuel, and dockage costs during the charter. The APA is usually calculated as a percentage of the charter fee, typically around 30% . The APA is paid before the charter begins, and any unused funds will be returned to you at the end of the charter.

Fuel and dockage costs depend on a variety of factors

Fuel and dockage costs are typically included in the APA, but you may need to be aware of these costs as they can add up quickly. Fuel costs will depend on the distance traveled and the speed of the yacht, while dockage costs will depend on the location and the size of the yacht. You might need to discuss these costs with your yacht charter broker before booking the charter.

Crew gratuity ranges around 0–20% of the charter fee

Crew gratuity is a customary payment for the crew and is typically around 10–20% of the charter fee. This is not a mandatory fee, but it is expected and greatly appreciated by the crew. The gratuity can be paid in cash or added to the APA.

The size of the superyacht matters

Superyachts come in a range of sizes, from small sailing yachts to massive megayachts. The size of the yacht you choose will depend on a variety of factors, including the number of guests you plan to bring, the destinations you want to visit, and your budget.

cost of renting a superyacht

Smaller yachts, such as sailing yachts and motor yachts, are typically more affordable and can accommodate up to 12 guests. Larger yachts, such as megayachts and explorer yachts, can accommodate up to 36 guests and offer more amenities and space.

Consider the style of the superyacht

Classic yachts are typically made of wood and have a timeless, elegant design. They offer a sense of nostalgia and tradition and are often favored by those who appreciate the craftsmanship and history of sailing.

Modern yachts, on the other hand, are sleek and contemporary, with cutting-edge technology and amenities. They offer a more futuristic and luxurious experience and are often favored by those who want the latest and greatest in yacht design.

Comparison between sailing and motor yachts

The propulsion of the yacht is another important factor to consider. Sailing yachts offer a more authentic and eco-friendly experience, with the wind as the primary source of power. They are also quieter and more peaceful, allowing you to enjoy the sound of the waves and the beauty of the sea.

Motor yachts, on the other hand, offer more speed and power, allowing you to cover more ground and visit more destinations in a shorter amount of time. They also offer more amenities, such as hot tubs, gyms, and helipads, making them ideal for those who want a more luxurious and indulgent experience.

Chartering a yacht in the Caribbean vs. the Mediterranean

The Mediterranean and the Caribbean are two of the most popular destinations for superyacht charters. The Mediterranean is known for its stunning coastline, historic cities, and glamorous ports of call. The Caribbean, on the other hand, is famous for its crystal-clear waters, white-sand beaches, and laid-back island lifestyle.

If you're looking for a yachting destination with a rich history and culture, the Mediterranean is the place to be. You can explore ancient ruins, dine on Michelin-starred cuisine, and experience some of the world's most famous events, such as the Monaco Grand Prix and the Cannes Film Festival . Charter prices for luxury superyachts in the Meds can range from €30,000 to over €1 million per week.

If, on the other hand, you're looking for a more relaxed charter destination where you can soak up the sun and enjoy water sports, the Caribbean is the perfect choice. You can swim with dolphins in the Bahamas, snorkel in the Virgin Islands, and enjoy a beach barbecue on a secluded island. Chartering a superyacht in the Caribbean can be as pricey as $100,000–$500,000 or more.

Renting a superyacht during seasons with special events

If you're planning your superyacht charter around a special event, such as a music festival or a sporting event, you'll need to consider the location and timing of the event. Some of the most popular events for superyacht charters include the Monaco Grand Prix, the Cannes Film Festival, and the America's Cup.

Keep in mind that these events can be very busy, so you may need to book your charter well in advance to secure a berth in the port of call. You'll also need to consider the additional costs of attending the event, such as tickets, transportation, and accommodations.

Planning to Charter a Superyacht in Different Weather Conditions

When planning your superyacht charter, you may need to consider the weather conditions at your chosen destination. The Mediterranean has a mild climate, with warm summers and mild winters, while the Caribbean has a tropical climate, with hot and humid weather during the dry season, and frequent rains during the wet season.

If you're planning your charter during the summer months , you may need to be prepared for high temperatures and strong sun. Make sure to bring plenty of sunscreen and lightweight clothing to stay cool and comfortable.

In the winter months , you might need to be prepared for cooler temperatures and the possibility of rain. Try to pack warm clothing and rain gear, and be prepared to adjust your itinerary if the weather turns bad.

The cost to charter a luxury yacht is not always clear, especially if you are renting a vessel for the first time. Freedom, privacy, intimacy, service, comfort, exclusive experiences… No doubt, holidays during a cruise sounds like THE ultimate luxury vacation.

So, how much does it really cost to charter a luxury yacht?

What is included in a luxury yacht rental price?

The base price of a yacht charter given is usually the weekly rate . It accounts for 60% to 80% of the final price and refers to the cost of the yacht itself, its insurance, all its equipment and toys, the crew salary and services during the whole charter duration.

Most often, the more spacious, luxurious, prestigious the yacht is, the higher the price. Yet, several other factors can significantly impact yacht charter costs.

Factors influencing the cost of a yacht charter

Size and type of yachts influences (a lot) charter costs.

The size of a yacht is the key factor impacting the price:

  • Between 65ft (20m) and 80ft (24m) , expect a weekly charter rate of $20,000 to $80,000.
  • Between 80ft (24m) and 100ft (30m) , expect a weekly charter rate of $80,000 and $120,000.
  • For a superyacht over 100ft (30m), expect a weekly charter rate of $100,000 and above.
  • To rent a mega yacht over 200ft (60m), weekly charter rate goes from $300,000 to $1,000,000 and more. For example, with her 136 meters length, Megayacht Flying Fox charter weekly rate  is from €3,500,000, and she can host up to 36 guests with 54 crew members.

Other factors influencing the charter rate are the type of yacht: is it a motor yacht, a sailing multihull, a power catamaran ?

The year of build, the shipyard (for instance Lurssen, Sunreef or Vitters that have quite a reputation), the water toys available onboard, or the number of crew included can have a big impact on the luxury yacht charter final cost.

The season factor influences the luxury yacht charter cost

As in many other touristic services, yacht rental prices also vary with seasonality. They generally increase in the high season months – summer season in the Mediterranean (July and August) or winter in the Caribbean (Christmas, New Year, February) – and decrease during the low season months.

The yacht charter rates may also increase when popular events are taking place (carnival, shows, festivals, etc.)

cost of renting a superyacht

Are destinations affecting yacht charter fees?

A yacht charter price depends as well on the destination and is subject to the law of supply and demand.

The Galapagos Archipelago is one of the most explicit examples. The yacht charters fleet is very limited there; therefore, prices are higher than more popular destinations.

On the other hand, in regions offering large crewed yacht charter fleet like the Mediterranean, luxury yacht charter costs are more attractive due to higher competition.

To know more about this subject, read our articles about common yacht charter costs in the Caribbean , in Mediterranean as well as Polynesian destinations.

What is NOT included in a Crewed yacht charter price ?

The apa amount needs to be added on top of the yacht charter cost.

The yacht charter base price just generally covers the rental of the vessel with her crew. This is where the APA comes in.

The role of the APA

The A dvance P rovisioning A llowance is here to to pay for provisions on board, special customers’ requests, fuel and other variable costs. The APA is a standard system, like an onboard box, managed on your behalf by the Captain. Your crew uses this money to buy any product of your choice, or pay for taxis, port fees, communication fees and other expenses that are hard to plan for.

How does the APA work?

All the APA expenses are charged at cost. This is a transparent budget management, and all the receipts are available upon request. The Captain can present a detailed breakdown of all the expenses during the crew or after. On the last day of your charter, the remaining unused funds of the APA are reimbursed in full to the clients.

APA is an important part of the total cost of your charter. It usually represents between 20% to 30% of the yacht charter base price. Since APA is payable in advance, at the time of booking, it is just an estimation. One basic rule: If you’re uncertain, estimate your APA on the high side. Better be safe than sorry!

Taxes and VAT also need to be applied on yacht charter cost

In Europe, chartering a commercial vessel is an economic activity and is subject to VAT. In general, the boat must be imported under commercial registration into the EU. The VAT rate will be added on top of the charter fee. It is due in the EU country where the charter starts. There are some exceptions to the rule, so make sure to discuss this with your consultant while making your choice to make sure you can anticipate the true cost of VAT.

Here are some VAT rates in 2022 for a crewed yacht charter in Mediterranean: – Charter in France will be at 20 % VAT based on charter fee – Charter in Italy will charge 22 % VAT based on charter fee – Charter in Spain will charge 21 % VAT based on charter fee – Charter in Croatia will charge 13 % VAT based on charter fee – Charter in Greece will charge 24 % VAT based on charter fee with a discount of 60% on charter of more than 48h ending usually at 12% VAT, this is subject to change in 2022. Charters beginning in non-european countries but cruising or ending in a EU country will apply a VAT on the prorata of days spent in its territorial waters. The owning company of the yacht must be registered in each EU-country he intends to do a charter. Moreover, some countries charge charter licences to authorize Yachts to embark and disembark passengers during a cruise, which might add up to the total cost.

A few examples to illustrate the yacht charter VAT costs complexity

  • A yacht doing charter in Greece must have a charter licence . Nevertheless, a yacht without Greek licence can cruise in Greek waters as long as the charter does not begin and end in a Greek port.
  • To do a charter in Spain, a vessel must be EU-flagged and hold a Spanish charter licence. Non EU-flagged yachts can only cruise in Balearic islands and Barcelona, then the VAT cost on the charter rate will be 24%.

Some countries also charge taxes that will influence your charter rate. – 18% taxes based on charter fee for cruise in Turkey – 4% taxes for charter taking place in the Bahamas – 10% taxes for charter taking place in Australia The work of your broker includes working with fiscal representatives to give you the correct cost of the VAT of your luxury yacht charter.

Delivery/redelivery fees may be added to your charter cost

Asking to embark and disembark in different ports during a crewed yacht charter is possible and subject to confirmation. In this case, delivery and/or re-delivery fees will be charged to bring the yacht back to its original berth. These fees will be confirmed once all the ports are chosen, and fuel consumption to move the vessel is calculated.

Crew gratuity to consider in your yacht charter expenses

Remember that during a boat rental your crew is almost 24/7 at your service to deliver the best possible experience. To thank them for their service, it is customary to leave them a tip at the end of your charter.

Tipping rules on a yacht charter depend on the destination.

In the Mediterranean you can tip 10-15% of your weekly charter fee excluding expenses and taxes, while in the Caribbean a 15-20% tip is more common.

You can hand your tip in cash to your captain in an envelope the last day of your charter. It will be up to the captain to split the tip to the different crew members. In fact, while you may want to give a more generous tip to whom you have seen the most, remember the crew works as a team and it’s important to reward them as such.

The engine engineer stuck in the engine room, the deckhands who prepare the water toys for you, the stewardesses refreshing your cocktails etc. are all the little hands that will make your vacation the best ever.

Yacht Charter Price – The “ALL-INCLUSIVE” option

A crewed yacht rental price can be “charter fee plus expenses” or “charter fee, all inclusive”.

Indeed, certain types of charters in the Caribbean offer an “all-inclusive” rate, which basically gives clients a fixed price charter with all expenses established prior to departure.

What is an ALL-INCLUSIVE yacht charter ? The charter cost includes the rental of the boat itself with her insurance, equipment, water toys and crew as well as food, waters and soft drinks, snacks, fuel for engine and tender for cruising up to 4 hours/day.

What are the extra costs in an “all inclusive yacht charter rate” ? On top of your charter fee, you may have small expenses to enhance your time onboard your boat such as taxi transfers, cruising and local taxes for entering national parks, premium food and beverages, licence and fishing permit, agency and ship agent if any.

Other costs related to renting a superyacht may include crew fees, fuel, food and beverages, and docking fees.

What is a Superyacht?

A superyacht is a term used to describe a large, luxurious motor or sailing vessel, typically ranging in size from 40 to 180 feet.

Superyachts are generally used for pleasure, but they can also be used for business or charter purposes.

These vessels are typically equipped with a variety of amenities, such as multiple decks, a full kitchen, a spa and wellness area, multiple bedrooms, and a crew to tend to the guests’ needs.

Superyachts are designed to provide an unforgettable experience, with the ultimate in comfort and luxury.

Factors that Determine the Cost of Renting a Superyacht

cost of renting a superyacht

When it comes to the cost of renting a superyacht, there are several factors to consider.

The most important of these is the size of the vessel.

Generally, the larger the yacht, the more expensive it is to rent.

Another factor to consider is the age of the yacht.

Older yachts tend to be less expensive to rent than newer models.

Additionally, the amenities on the yacht will determine the overall cost.

If the yacht has luxurious features such as a jacuzzi or sauna, the price will be higher.

Furthermore, the destination of the yacht can also influence the cost.

For example, if the yacht is traveling to a popular destination such as the Caribbean, the cost will likely be higher than if it were to travel to a less popular destination.

Lastly, there are various fees and taxes that can also add to the overall cost of a yacht rental .

Depending on the size and location of the yacht, these fees can range from hundreds to thousands of dollars.

In conclusion, the total cost of renting a superyacht depends on the specifics of the rental.

Factors such as the size, age, amenities, and destination of the yacht can all affect the cost.

Additionally, fees and taxes must also be taken into account.

Therefore, it is important to consider all of these factors before renting a superyacht.

Average Cost of a Day Charter on a 50-Meter Yacht

When it comes to renting a superyacht, one of the most important factors to consider is the cost.

The amount you pay for a day charter on a 50-meter yacht can vary greatly depending on factors such as length, age, amenities, and destination.

Generally speaking, the cost of such a rental starts at around $50,000, with weekly charters ranging from $200,000 to $500,000.

For larger yachts, the cost can be even higher.

On average, a day charter on a 50-meter yacht will cost you anywhere from $50,000 to $100,000.

Generally, the cost of a day charter is determined by the length of the yacht, its age, the number of crew members, the amenities offered, and the destination.

If youre looking for a luxurious experience, you can expect to pay more for a newer, larger yacht with more amenities.

When renting a superyacht, there are also various fees and taxes that must be taken into account.

For example, in some areas, there may be a fuel surcharge, port fees, and even taxes.

Additionally, you may need to factor in the cost of hiring a captain and crew, as well as catering and other services.

Ultimately, the total cost of renting a superyacht depends on the specifics of the rental.

Renting a superyacht can be a luxurious and memorable experience, but its important to understand the costs associated with it.

A day charter on a 50-meter yacht typically starts at around $50,000, with weekly charters ranging from $200,000 to $500,000.

Additionally, there are various fees and taxes that must be taken into account, so its important to keep these in mind when budgeting for a superyacht rental.

Average Cost of a Weekly Charter on a 50-Meter Yacht

cost of renting a superyacht

The average cost of a weekly charter on a 50-meter yacht can range from $200,000 to $500,000.

This cost range is dependent on several factors, such as the length of the yacht, the age of the yacht, the amenities that come with it, and the destination of the charter.

For example, a newer yacht with more luxury amenities would cost more than an older model with fewer amenities.

Furthermore, the cost of the charter also depends on the destination.

If you are looking to charter a yacht in the Caribbean, the cost will likely be higher than a charter in the Mediterranean.

Additionally, there are various fees and taxes that must be taken into account when calculating the cost of a superyacht charter.

For example, the cost may include fuel surcharges, port fees, and other expenses.

These fees can add up quickly and should be considered when budgeting for a charter.

It is important to do your research and shop around to get the best deal for your desired yacht.

By understanding the costs associated with a superyacht charter, you can make an informed decision and ensure you stay within your budget.

Cost of Renting a Larger Yacht

When it comes to renting a superyacht, the size of the vessel is one of the most important factors in determining the cost.

While day charters on a 50-meter yacht typically start at around $50,000, the cost of renting a larger vessel can be substantially higher.

For example, a 100-meter yacht could cost up to $1 million per week to charter.

Furthermore, the cost of renting a superyacht can increase depending on the age of the yacht, as well as the amenities and destinations available.

For instance, a newer superyacht with state-of-the-art technology and luxurious amenities may cost more than an older yacht without such features.

Additionally, the cost of renting a superyacht could vary depending on the destination.

If youre looking to charter a yacht for a Mediterranean cruise, for example, the cost could be significantly higher than if you were to rent a yacht for a Caribbean cruise.

In addition to the cost of renting the yacht itself, there are various fees and taxes that must also be taken into account when considering the total cost of renting a superyacht.

Some of the most common fees include port fees, fuel costs, crew wages, and insurance.

Depending on the length of the charter, the size of the yacht, and the destination, these fees and taxes could add up to significant amounts.

Ultimately, the cost of renting a superyacht depends on the specifics of the rental.

As such, its important to consider all of the factors mentioned above when determining the total cost of renting a superyacht.

By taking into account the size of the yacht, age, amenities, and destination, you can get an accurate estimate of the total cost of renting a superyacht.

Additional Fees and Taxes

cost of renting a superyacht

When renting a superyacht, there are additional fees and taxes that must be taken into account.

The exact amount will depend on the specifics of the rental, such as the destination, length of stay, and yacht type.

In many cases, charter companies will require a security deposit prior to the rental.

This deposit is typically refundable if the yacht is returned in good condition.

Additionally, the charter company may require that the yacht be insured for the duration of the rental.

In certain regions, there may also be port fees or mooring fees that must be paid.

These fees can range from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars, depending on the location and length of the rental.

Finally, there may be taxes that must be paid.

In some cases, these taxes can be quite steep, and can range from 10% to 30% of the total cost of the rental.

It is important to research the local tax laws prior to renting a superyacht, to ensure that all costs are accounted for.

Overall, the cost of renting a superyacht can be quite high, and there are many additional fees and taxes that must be taken into account.

It is important to research the rental company and destination to ensure that all costs are accounted for prior to making a booking.

Understanding the Total Cost of Renting a Superyacht

Renting a superyacht can be a pricey endeavor, but there are certain factors that can affect the total cost.

The primary factors to consider when calculating the total cost of a superyacht rental are the length, age, amenities, destination, fees, and taxes.

First, the length of the yacht will have a major impact on the total cost.

Generally, a 50-meter yacht will cost around $50,000 for a day charter, with weekly charters ranging from $200,000 to $500,000.

Second, the age of the yacht is another factor to consider.

Older yachts may be cheaper, but they may not have all of the latest amenities and features.

Third, amenities are another factor to consider when determining the total cost of a superyacht rental.

Some yachts may include additional features such as a pool, spa, sauna, gym, or other luxury amenities.

These amenities can add to the total cost of the rental.

Fourth, the destination of the rental can also impact the total cost.

Some destinations may have higher fees or taxes than other destinations, so its important to consider this when calculating the total cost.

Finally, there are various fees and taxes that must be taken into account when calculating the total cost of a superyacht rental.

These fees and taxes can vary depending on the rental destination and the size of the yacht, so its important to understand all of the applicable fees and taxes before committing to a rental.

Knowing the primary factors that affect the total cost can help you to make an informed decision when renting a superyacht.

Final Thoughts

Depending on the yacht’s size, amenities, and destination, the cost can vary greatly.

On average, a day charter on a 50-meter yacht will cost around $50,000, while a weekly charter can range from $200,000 to $500,000.

Yacht Charter: How Much Does it Cost? All Rental Costs Explained

Mooring a yacht

How much it costs to rent a yacht isn’t always a very clear cut answer. There are numerous ways to charter a yacht and different factors can significantly increase or lower the cost of a yacht rental.

Here are the main costs to consider to estimate the total yacht rental price of your next yacht charter.

Yacht Rental Costs in a Nutshell

To calculate the price of a yacht charter, you need to sum the base fee of the yacht charter (the price you see displayed on websites), taxes (varies depending on destination), APA , crew gratuity and insurance cost .

Depending on the details of your yacht charter, you will need to add between 30% and 100% on top of the base fee to have the total cost of your rental.

Here is an idea of the ranges you can expect for the yacht charter base fees :

  • Motor Yachts – Sailing Yachts under 50ft: €4 000 – €15 000 / week
  • Motor Yacht – Sailing Yachts between 50ft and 65ft: €15 000 – €40 000 / week
  • Motor Yachts – Sailing Yachts between 65ft and 80ft: €40 000 – €70 000 / week
  • Motor Yachts – Sailing Yachts between 80ft and 100ft: €70 000 – €100 000 / week
  • Motor Yachts – Sailing Yachts over 100ft: €100 000 – up to 1,000,000 / week

How is the total price of a yacht rental calculated?

There are two main categories of yacht charters: all-inclusive or separated charges.

The all-inclusive yacht rentals option (rare)

The all-inclusive option isn’t very common in yacht charters, and tends to be for smaller yachts and cruise where it’s easier to package a standardized offer.

As the name implies, all-inclusive yacht charter offers a price that includes everything: fuel, food, beverages, and entertainment (diving and fishing equipment).

The “usual” option: base charter rates and separated variable charges to add on top

In most yachting websites, the price of a yacht charter only refers to the  base price  of a boat at its lowest possible charter time.

It doesn’t include many variable costs such as food and beverage, fuel, taxes, insurance and so on.

To understand the total cost of chartering a yacht when it’s not all-inclusive (which is almost always the case), it’s therefore important to split the costs that are included in the base rate of the yacht (the price you’ll see displayed on a website) from the costs that are not included in that base rate , that you will therefore need to add yourself if you want a precise estimation.

Don’t worry, the math isn’t rocket science.

The formula goes like this:

Total yacht charter price = Base charter fee + APA + Taxes + Insurance

We’ll detail each costs in the following paragraphs.

cost of renting a superyacht

The base charter fee of a yacht rental: Costs and factors included in the calculation

The base charter fee of the yacht rental is essential in calculating the total cost of your charter. Most variable costs are calculated as a percentage of that base fee and are simply summed up together along with the base fee to get the total cost.

Here is what you should know about the base charter fee.

The base charter fee follows a simple rule: the longer the yacht, the higher the charter cost

The boat’s size affects the base charter fee considerably. It determines the number of cabins and guest capacity , the number of staff on board, along with a lot of amenities that tend to get more spacious and more luxurious the longer the yacht gets.

Everything that comes with the yacht (including the staff!) is included in the base charter fee.

The more reputable and in-demand the yacht is, the higher the base fee gets

A yacht reputation and popularity can also affect the base fee, even for boats within the same size range.

Boats are by definition limited in stock and follow supply and demand laws . When a particular yacht is in high demand, whether it’s thanks to its reputation, its features, the season or its recent appearance in a movie, series or TV shows the price of the charter can shoot up.

For instance, chartering a yacht featured in a James Bond movie such as  luxury yacht Regina  won’t cost the same as a regular model. Likewise for most yachts that are a part of the popular Below Deck TV show .

It can also be true for some classic yachts that had famous builders or previous celebrity owners.

The season does influence the yacht rental prices at the base fee level

Your yacht charter base fee depends to some extent on your date of departure.

If you take your vacation during the busiest weeks of the year (high season) of a destination, you’ll pay a higher base price than someone who charters a yacht on low season dates.

In the Mediterranean, the high season is in summer while it’s in winter for the Caribbean. The yacht charter base fees will be at their highest during these months.

Sometimes just a week or two can make a big difference to the price. Chartering a yacht in shoulder seasons can be a good idea when you are looking for good deals.

Likewise, since some destinations have very short seasons , it has increased demands and makes it more expensive.

International events will also increase the cost of a yacht charter. Expect to pay more if you want to attend the Monte-Carlo Masters (April), the Cannes Film Festival (May), or the Monaco Grand Prix (May) during your yachting vacations in the Mediterranean.

The destination you pick can affect the base charter fee of your yacht rental

Your vacation destination is an essential factor in the yacht charter charge that is included in the base fee.

As the supply and demand law dictates, the more competition there is, the less you have to spend. It is why locations with large charter fleets are less expensive.

The Bahamas, BVI and the Mediterranean are for example more affordable than remote islands without established yachting industries.

yacht destination

The water toys are usually included in your base yacht charter fee and influence its amount

On a yacht, water toys don’t refer to your average backyard inflatable unicorns. Think instead of big equipment for marine activities: jet skis, kite-surf, kayaks, paddleboards, submarines, and expensive high-powered yacht tenders.

Some vessels come with sea pools or a giant slide to glide from the top of the boat straight into the ocean.

Most of these items, especially when they are in high numbers, can come at a cost that will be on the bottom line of your yacht charter invoice.

All the water toys specified in the yacht brochure when you make the reservation are generally included in the base fee . But it’s up to you if you want to rent others or even buy them. Make sure you ask your broker for advice about the cost of these extra if your budget is limited.

Yacht water toys

The base fee of your yacht charter is fixed and proportional to its duration

Most yacht charter companies only work ‘per week,’ and yacht owners rarely accept a shorter duration. Many companies have minimum stays of ten days, however some boats accept day charter or short periods, you can always ask your broker for an appropriate selection.

You can rent a vessel for two weeks or more, but the price won’t go down for longer holidays.

Yacht rental costs that are NOT included in yacht charter base fee

Now that we’ve seen what is usually included in the charter base fee, let’s find more about all these costs that you’ll have to add to the base fee to estimate your total yacht rental cost.

APA: the main variable cost of your yacht charter (add 20%-40% to your base fee)

The charter fee usually covers the cost of renting the yacht and the crew’s salary. But you still need to pay for fuel, provisions, and other extras for your trip.

A fee covers all these additional costs : APA or Advanced Provisioning Allowance.  Find out more about the APA here.

APA is the standard system to pay your expenses on a luxury yacht charter, and it is generally a percentage of the charter fee. You’ll usually end up paying between 20% and 40% more than the base cost of the yacht charter in APA.

The amount varies a lot, depending on the ship and your activities. It will increase if the yacht has a higher fuel consumption, if you plan on cruising more than 4 hours a day, if you want to have onboard particular expensive brands, etc.

What does the APA cover?

APA covers all the day-to-day operating expenses. It also includes any special requests you might have while you’re on board.

Here are the main costs of your yacht rental the APA covers:

Food and drink

On your yacht charter, the chef can prepare all the dishes you want, whether you are vegan or low carb, whether you have allergies or require kosher meals. Make sure that you explain your food preferences to your broker.

Fuel Charges

Your fuel costs will depend on your boat, your itinerary, and whether you choose to cruise or stay at anchor. A sailing yacht charter can cost 10% less than a motor yacht charter because the fuel consumption is smaller.

This amount also includes the fuel expenditure of any water toys and tenders you use during your charter.

Harbor fees and dockage

The harbor fees and dockage will be more or less high-priced depending on your destination and season. All these costs will be included in your APA.

yacht Harbor

Communications Costs

For most people, yachting is about enjoying life outside of the daily routine. If you can’t survive without the Internet or satellite communications, you don’t have to worry. Your yacht charter will provide you all the digital connections needed. They won’t add much to the APA, but it’s still something that comes at a price.

Delivery fee

If you board or disembark the ship outside its usual harbor, you’ll have to pay a transportation fee to cover the fuel required to get your yacht to your requested destination.

Interiors and Laundry

The APA fee includes interiors and laundry costs to keep the yacht immaculate. But if you request unique decoration, it may add an extra charge.

Personal laundry services may not be covered depending on the yacht.

Taxes: a cost that varies a lot from country to country (add between 0% and 35% on top of base charter fee)

Taxes do have an impact on the total cost of your yacht charter, especially in some destinations.

For example, in Europe, chartering a commercial vessel is subject to VAT . But fees vary significantly according to your destination and itinerary. Some countries have a 0-tax rate (Montenegro, New England), while in others a passage in the international waters can lower the VAT rate.

The taxes can vary from VAT, national parks entrance (la Maddalena in Sardinia for example), countries taxes etc. the VAT and taxes will be based on the charter fee, so make sure you discuss this with your advisor to anticipate the cost.

Here are some VAT rate applied on luxury yacht charter in 2022 :

–  Charter in France  will be at 20 % VAT based on charter fee

–  Charter in Italy  will charge 22 % VAT based on charter fee

–  Charter in Spain  will charge 21 % VAT based on charter fee

–  Charter in Croatia  will charge 13 % VAT based on charter fee

–  Charter in Greece  will charge 24 % VAT based on charter fee with a discount of 60% on charter of more than 48h ending usually at 12% VAT, this is subject to change in 2022.

Moreover some countries such as Spain or Greece charge a licence for a yacht to be able to embark passengers for a paid charter in their waters, this explains why not every yacht can cruise in all countries.

Crew gratuity: a good practice to include in the cost of your yacht charter (add 15-20% to the base charter fee)

The crew on a yacht work even if you don’t notice it.

Serving, cleaning, preparing, fixing, they are the key elements that make your charter a success.

Even if tipping is not strictly mandatory, it is common practice to include a tip to the team when you are satisfied by their services.

The suggested amount is around 15-20% of your base charter rate . It is therefore important to include this amount in your yacht rental price beforehand.

Yacht crew

Yacht charter cancellation insurance: a small cost that can save you a lot (add 15% of your base fee)

Cancelling or shortening a yacht charter can be very expensive if you don’t have cancellation insurance.

It is a small price to pay to ensure that all the money spent on your yacht charter will not go to waste if some unfortunate event leads you to miss your yacht rental.

As a charter company, we will help you select the best insurance options among several different offers.

In most cases, your cancellation insurance will cost around 15% of your charter base fee.

A typical yacht rental total cost isn’t as hard to determine as it seems when you know all the variable costs and your base fee.

Once you have your base charter fee in hands, add the following costs to estimate the final amount you’ll see on your yacht rental invoice:

  • 20% – 40% on top of your base fee for APA (low end for sailing vessels, higher end for motoryachts)
  • 0% – 30% of taxes and VAT on top of your base price. Highly dependant on your destination.
  • 10% – 15% on top of your base fee for crew gratuity
  • 15% on top of your base fee for cancellation insurance

FAQ about cost of yacht charter and APA

Small motoryachts and sailing yachts under 50 ft (15m) can be chartered from 4,000€ to 15,000€ weekly.

Chartering motoryachts and sailing yachts between 50ft and 65ft costs between 15,000€ and 40,000€ weekly.

Between 65ft (20m) and 80ft (24m), you can expect motoryachts and sailing boats charters between 40,000€ and 70,000€ weekly. Between 80ft (24m) and 100ft (30m), the cost of chartering a yacht ranges between 70,000€ and 100,000€ weekly.

For yachts over 100ft (30m), the cost of charter ranges between 100,000€ and 1,000,000€ weekly.

APA stands for Advance Provisionning Allowance. You pay this fee in advance to cover food and drinks, fuel charges, harbors fees and dockage, communication, delivery fee various fees such as cleaning or interior design.

Advance Provisionning Allowance varies depending on your travel plans. Usually, it represents a surcharge of 20% to 40% on top of the yacht charter base price.

The APA is due one month before you set sail when dispensing your final charter payment. The captain directly receives the money and will supervise all the purchases made before and during your journey. He will be responsible for ensuring the crew stays within budget and will provide receipts upon request.

APA estimations are usually accurate. The captain will keep you updated during your trip. If you decide to go over the initial payment, you can top up the APA in cash or pay the balance during your trip.

With transparent communication, realistic budgets, and advanced provisioning, you may spend less than the APA and have the difference returned to you at the end of the cruise.

Get the base charter fee of your yacht rental, add taxes, APA, crew gratuity and cancellation insurance and you will have a very close estimation of your yacht rental cost everything included.

The base charter rate includes everything that is on a yacht: cabins, amenities, water toys along with the crew. Everything else (fuel, food, taxes…) come at an extra cost.

Crew gratuity is usually comprised between 15% and 20% on top of the base charter fee for most yacht rentals.

For sailboats in tax free areas, you can get away with a total cost of 30% on top of the base rate. In extreme cases (motoryachts in high taxed countries with big tips for the crew and cancelation insurance), you can more than double the base price. Most charters should be in between within the 40-80% on top of base fee range.

Planning a yacht charter is thrilling yet challenging, particularly when it comes to budgeting. The starting point is the yacht's base price, the weekly rental fee. But what about additional costs such as meals, beverages, local taxes, or fuel? How do these affect the overall cost? The encouraging part is that understanding yacht charter fees is straightforward. With guidance from our seasoned professionals, you can gain a clearer idea of the expenditure for your dream vacation. Yacht charter costs vary based on several elements: the yacht type, destination, local taxes, dates and the age of the yacht. Yacht charter prices span a broad spectrum. For instance, smaller sailing yachts and catamarans may start at around $10,000 per week, whereas more luxurious motor superyachts can exceed $100,000 per week. Wondering about other expenses? Our Charter Advice Guide, a key part of our planning resources, delves deep into the specifics of yacht charter costs.

After you have chosen your desired yacht, your yacht broker will prepare a legally binding contract; usually a standard agreement with conditions set by the terms applicable to the destination. Before you sign on the dotted line, it is important that you understand what it is that you are paying for and when it is due.

Base charter fee: All-Inclusive vs Plus Expenses

When it comes to crewed luxury yacht charters, you can choose from two types of vacations- "All-Inclusive" or  "Plus Expenses" charter experiences. But what do these classifications entail? Let's briefly compare:

  • All-Inclusive Yacht Charters Certain charters, particularly small catamaran and monohull sailboat charters in the Virgin Islands, wooden Gulets in Turkey or Phinisis in Indonesia, offer different all-inclusive pricing packages. This means that the rates depend on the number of guests and cover some or all meals and beverages, water sports, and fuel expenses. However, dockage fees and taxes are typically billed as additional costs.
  • Plus Expenses Charters The rates for larger sailing or motor yachts are exclusive of operational costs, which are to be paid additionally. With these high-end charters, the base rate covers only the yacht rental. Extra charges, such as for food, beverages, fuel, dockage, port taxes, and other expenses, are billed separately. These running costs are usually covered by an Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA) payment, generally set at 20-35% of the base charter rate depending on the size and location of the yacht. This amount is paid before the start of the charter.

The table below gives a quick comparision of what is generally included in the price for both charter types.

Plus Expenses Charter Costs

In essence the base charter fee refers to the hire cost of the yacht itself, and implies that the yacht will be provided to you in full commission, with all equipment in working order and the yacht properly insured for marine risks.

In addition, the cost of the crew’s food, wages and clothing will be met by the owner for the entirety of the charter.

Charter rates are typically quoted per week (7 days), which in superyacht terms is generally accepted as the minimum period for yacht charters – although this is by no means set in stone.

The APA in Plus Expenses charters is typically about 25-40% of the yacht's base weekly charter rate (based on the size of yacht, location and yacht's fuel efficiency). This fee is collected before the start of the charter and acts like an expense fund that the captain can utilize during the trip to cover costs such as fuel, food and beverages, dockage fees and ad hoc incidental expenses.  At the end of the charter the captain will prepare a detailed statement of the APA expenditures, along with any unspent APA funds returned in cash.

Should expenses exceed the initial APA, you might need to top up the fund during the charter. This replenishment can be done in cash, but many opt to establish accounts with their charter brokers. These accounts can then be accessed upon the captain's request for additional funds.

Taxes & Value Added Tax (VAT)

For most yachts, regardless of being All-Inclusive or Plus Expenses , local taxes or Value Added Tax are NOT incorporated into their charter rate. It falls upon the charterer to pay these tax expenses before the charter commences. Tax rates can vary greatly depending on the destination; here's an brief overview of tax rates in some of the most sought-after yachting locations:

In the European Union (EU) recent harmonising changes to tax laws have affected VAT rates across most of the Mediterranean region. EU tax laws state that VAT will apply to vessels embarking or disembarking within their waters, although rates for VAT vary depending on the European destination. In France the current rate is 20% and in Italy it is 22%, whilst Turkey and Montenegro both charge 0% for EU-flagged yachts cruising their waters.

VAT also applies to yacht charters cruising The Bahamas , plus may also apply in some Caribbean islands.

Please consult your yacht charter broker  for further personalized advice if considering chartering in any of these areas.

Crew Gratuities

Although tipping is optional, it's customary to leave a gratuity for the crew. The typical range for tips is between 10-20%, and it should reflect the quality of service you and your guests experienced during your yacht charter.

It's best practice to hand over crew gratuities to the captain for distribution, ensuring that every crew member is fairly recognized. This approach is important because there are often less visible crew members, like the engineer and sous chef, working diligently behind the scenes to guarantee the success of your charter. It would be unfair for their contributions to go unrecognized.

Captain & Crew Gratuities (Tips): How much?

Cancellation Insurance

Charterers have the option to buy cancellation and curtailment insurance, akin to travel insurance. This insurance can provide coverage for costs in case the charter needs to be canceled or shortened. Charter brokers are equipped to assist in evaluating different insurance choices and typically offer a variety of options.

Delivery Fees

These fees are not typical for most charters, but if your charter takes place outside the yacht's regular cruising territory or a significant distance from its homeport, you might need to pay delivery fees. Usually, this will just involve covering the fuel costs for the journey.

The charter fee varies from one yacht to another for a number of reasons, such as its size, age, onboard amenities and time of year the yacht is chartered. We've listed below some of the most common factors that affect the base rate of a rental yacht.

Charter seasons

A yacht charter season can refer to the weather patterns of a particular destination or the peak times when demand for charter yachts is at its highest. Yacht charter seasons, therefore, are broken down into two distinct categories: Summer/Winter, and High/Low season.

View of the French Riviera

In terms of the yacht's base charter fee, high season rates will apply to the most popular periods for yacht charters – such as July and August in the Mediterranean or Christmas and New Year in the Caribbean . Low season rates will generally apply to all other periods.

Yacht Charter Seasons

Event pricing

A car races by yachts at the Monaco Grand Prix

Major events such as the Monaco Grand Prix and Cannes Film Festival are generally categorised as high season events , regardless of where they fall in the season, with yacht prices generally higher around these dates due to popular demand.

Unless you are keen to charter a yacht for a particular high season event, it is worth considering your dates carefully.

Shoulder seasons

The months straddling the high and low seasons are known as shoulder months, for example April and September for yacht charters around the Mediterranean, and can share much of the same weather and beautiful cruising conditions as the peak season whilst charter rates tend to be lower, making these months a great time for chartering a yacht.

Off-Season Yacht Charters

  • Onboard amenities

Aside from seasons and events, yachts of the same size can often differ in price based on their onboard amenities. A yacht which boasts a cinema or lavish water toys may have a higher base rate compared with a yacht with minimal amenities of the same size.

If the pricing is unclear, be sure to ask your yacht broker to explain any disparities.

Once you are clear on the base charter fee of your chosen yacht, it is important to learn about the additional costs that will be applied on top, depending on the type of charter contract used.

MYBA Charter Agreement

The most widely used contract for yacht charters is a MYBA agreement (Worldwide Yachting Association, formerly known as Mediterranean Yacht Brokers Association), which operates under Western Mediterranean Terms (WMT) .

This contract, often referred to as a "plus all expenses" contract, requires that you pay for items, such as fuel, delivery fees, food and drink, local taxes and dockage fees, as an additional expense applied over the base charter fee.

Typically, a charter party (this is the collective term for the total number of guests on a charter) will accumulate additional costs of between 25% to 30% of the base charter fee, depending on what is consumed. These expenses can be tracked through the use of an Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA) which we will cover in the next section.

Other charter contracts

Caribbean Terms Inclusive (CTI) – sometimes referred to as Standard Caribbean Terms (SCT) – is another contract regularly used by the yachting industry, the terms of which are generally employed by smaller yacht charters in the Caribbean.

Otherwise known as a "mostly all-inclusive" agreement, CTI differs from Western Mediterranean Terms as it includes three meals, plus up to four hours cruising, per day.

In addition to the commonly used MYBA terms and Caribbean Terms Inclusive, there are also less frequently used terms such as Standard Eastern Mediterranean Terms (SEMT) and Greek Terms (GT).

SEMT operates much in the same way as CTI, except it includes only two meals per day for guests instead of three, as it is assumed guests will dine ashore in the evenings. Greek Terms are similar to the MYBA terms apart from harbour and berthing fees, which are included under GT terms so long as they are within Greek waters.

If you are unsure what is included under the terms of your contract, be sure to ask your yacht charter broker .

For more in-depth information, please see our guide on yacht charter contracts below.

Yacht Charter Contracts

Typically, the APA accrues to approximately 25% to 30% of the base charter fee, though this does of course depend on your charter party’s tastes and requirements and could be far less or far greater than this estimation. For instance, charter guests who intend to regularly dine on caviar and vintage wine can expect to pay more, whereas guests on a sailing yacht charter that is anchored at sea for most nights can expect to save on fuel costs and hefty marina fees.

You can request an APA estimate from your yacht broker based on your charter party's onboard expectations.

What happens next?

The APA is payable one month prior to boarding the charter yacht (see 'Payment Structure' below), and is generally paid direct to the Captain.

Once the APA has been paid it will then be retained as a bank account of sorts, from which the Chef can provision the yacht ready for your charter and the Captain can make expenditures while keeping a strict record of what has been spent. It is important to note that all additional costs incurred throughout the charter are charged at cost with no mark-up.

At any point during the vacation you can request an up-to-date summary of the accounts as a way of keeping track of expenditures.

yachts docked in a marina at sunset

When you think of fuel costs, you may think of what is consumed by the yacht over the course of your charter.

However, there are further fuel costs to take into account that you may not have considered. These include;

  • Personal watercraft toys, such as jet skis
  • Tender boats used for transporting guests to and from the yacht, or for water sports activities
  • A yacht's generators whilst at anchor (shore-side electricty is used when docked at a marina)

Furthermore, the distance travelled and the speed at which the yacht cruises also affects the overall fuel costs, so it is important to bear these factors in mind when settling on your itinerary.

Dockage fees

These may vary widely depending on the destination and time of year from minimal to extravagant (think Port Hercule in Monaco during the Grand Prix).

If you are interested in booking any nights in marinas during your yacht charter, you should liaise with your broker who can advise on the various options available, including prices, around your chosen location and dates.

In general, the base charter fee of a yacht will include insurance for marine risk and third party liability insurance, which covers accidental damage and personal injury. It will also cover use of the yacht's watertoys and equipment.

Additional insurance

Although insurance is not generally connected to charter costs, it is useful to consider should you wish to take out additional insurance such as Cancellation and Curtailment cover which is calculated at 2.5% of the charter fee for the unforeseen cancellation of a charter, and can prove a worthwhile investment as well as providing peace of mind.

You should check with your broker about the level of insurance built into your charter contract before signing.

Other taxes

Local taxes may also apply in certain countries, therefore it is important to speak with your yacht charter broker to clarify what additional taxes are applicable to your chosen destination and itinerary.

Whilst the payment structure can vary depending on the contract, in general charter payments are made as follows;

  • 50% of the charter fee is payable upon signing the charter agreement, which confirms the booking.
  • The remaining 50% of the charter fee, APA (usually between 25-30% of the base charter fee), delivery and/or re-delivery fees, applicable taxes, plus any additional agreed amounts are payable one month prior to commencement of the yacht charter.
  • Any balance of monies due are to be paid on the first working day prior to completion of the yacht charter.

For further clarification of the payment structure for your yacht charter, please speak with your broker.

The port side of a superyacht in a marina at sunset

The base charter fee for a yacht can differ for a number of reasons, including;

  • Size and age of the yacht
  • High/low seasons, and major events such as the Monaco Grand Prix

There will also be additional amounts to pay on top of the yacht's base charter fee, which can include;

  • Advanced Provisioning Allowance (roughly 25-30% of the yacht's base fee and includes all charter expenditure such as food, fuel and marina fees)
  • Additional insurance, such as Cancellation and Curtailment Insurance
  • VAT and other taxes

It is important for you to understand the entire payment structure to ensure no unpleasant surprises arise whilst enjoying your vacation.

If you wish to know more about costs relating to your yacht charter, please speak with your preferred yacht broker for more information.

How much does it really cost to charter a superyacht?

How much does it really cost to charter a superyacht?

January 15, 2018 10:48 am

While yachting is most likely the most prestigious way to travel, it isn’t reserved exclusively for billionaires. Owning large superyachts is a privilege reserved for only the very few but there is an opportunity to enjoy a week aboard one of these luxurious vessels. Chartering a yacht is far less expensive than owning one. Especially if your use of the yacht is scarce. So how much does it really cost to charter a superyacht for a week?

cost of renting a superyacht

As an example, we will detail the expenses of a charter aboard Lady Carmen , a Hatteras 101′. She sleeps 10 guests, as most charter yachts, and features an on-deck full beam master suite with panoramic views. With a great array of toys and tender, a hot tub on the flybridge and an art deco interior she is one of the most popular charter yachts in the Carribean.

cost of renting a superyacht

The first expense when chartering a yacht is the charter fee of course. Lady Carmen is asking $53,000 a week for example. That first expense buys the yacht, the crew and the insurances for a week. Then comes the second major expense, the advance provisioning allowance (APA). Then advance is transferred to the yacht’s captain and will be spent on your docking fees, food, fuel used. That expense may vary depending on the yacht but is usually 30% of the charter fee. If it is not spent entirely by the captain because the guests simply do not engage in many expenses, it is restituted at the end of the charter.

One of the last expense is the crew gratuity. Representing between 10% to 20% of the charter fee, it is a tip for the crew and the captain. On average that gratuity raises at 15% yet remains at the discretion of the charterer. The final expense is your travel to the yacht and plane tickets to the destination.

cost of renting a superyacht

If we recap these numbers, the total to charter a yacht as Lady Carmen in the Carribean raises to about $100,000 for a week for up to 10 guests. While owning a yacht such as Lady Carmen costs far more than the charter, there is a certain interest in chartering. If you are not sure you will be able to use the yacht extensively, chartering is probably your opportunity to enjoy the world of yachting. More than that chartering allows you to change destinations at will and explore the most remote area of the globe in the utmost comfort.

Understanding Yacht Chartering Costs: A Comprehensive Guide

cost of renting a superyacht

Imagine sailing the open seas, surrounded by azure waters, and basking in the luxury of a private yacht. Yacht chartering offers a unique and exhilarating experience, but it’s essential to understand the costs associated with it before embarking on this adventure. In this comprehensive guide, we will break down the various expenses involved in chartering a yacht, from the base charter rates to additional fees and seasonal price variations. We’ll also provide you with valuable tips on how to budget effectively for your dream yacht charter.

Base Charter Rates

The base charter rate is the starting point for calculating the cost of your yacht charter. This rate typically covers the rental of the yacht itself for a specific duration, which can range from a few days to several weeks. The base charter rate varies widely depending on several factors:

  • Yacht Size and Type: Larger and more luxurious yachts come with higher base charter rates. Motor yachts are generally more expensive than sailing yachts due to their higher operational costs.
  • Yacht Age and Condition: Newer yachts in excellent condition command higher charter rates than older vessels.
  • Location: The location of your charter significantly influences the base rate. Popular destinations like the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, and the Bahamas tend to have higher prices and local taxes.
  • Time of Year: Peak chartering seasons in specific regions can lead to higher base rates. For instance, the Caribbean can be more expensive during the winter months when the weather is ideal.
  • Duration: Longer charters may offer lower daily rates compared to shorter ones.
  • Inclusions: Some charters include additional amenities such as water toys, scuba equipment, or a chef. These extras can impact the base rate.

Additional Fees

Understanding the additional fees associated with yacht chartering is crucial for budgeting effectively. These fees can significantly impact the total cost of your charter:

  • Fuel: Yachts consume fuel, even sailing yachts, and you may be responsible for covering these costs. Fuel expenses can vary depending on the yacht’s size, distance traveled, and usage of amenities like air conditioning and water sports equipment.
  • Crew: Most charter yachts come with a crew that includes a captain, chef, or possibly a stewardess, and deckhand. The crew’s salaries and gratuities are usually included in the base rate, but it’s customary to tip them, often around 15-20% of the base charter rate.
  • Provisions: You may need to budget for food and beverages during your charter. You can either purchase your provisions locally or opt for a fully provisioned charter, where the crew stocks the yacht with your preferred items.
  • Dockage and Marina Fees: When you choose to dock at marinas or ports, you’ll incur fees. These fees can vary widely, and the more popular the destination, the higher the costs.
  • Taxes and Permits: Some regions may require specific permits or impose taxes on yacht charters. Be sure to inquire about these expenses before booking.
  • Communication and Entertainment: If you require internet access or want to use satellite TV, you may have to pay extra for these services.
  • Optional Extras: Water sports equipment, scuba diving, and excursions are often available for an additional fee.

Seasonal Price Variations

The time of year you choose for your yacht charter can significantly affect the overall cost:

  • High Season: The high season typically corresponds to the best weather conditions in a given region. Charter rates are at their peak during this time, so expect higher prices.
  • Low Season: Chartering during the off-peak season can yield cost savings. However, be prepared for less predictable weather.
  • Shoulder Season: Consider chartering during the shoulder season, which falls between the high and low seasons. You may enjoy good weather and more reasonable rates.

Tips for Budgeting

Here are some tips to help you budget effectively for your yacht charter:

  • Set a Clear Budget: Determine your total budget, including the base charter rate, additional fees, and discretionary expenses. Stick to it to avoid overspending.
  • Plan Ahead: Book your charter well in advance to secure better rates and availability, especially during peak seasons.
  • Opt for Inclusive Packages : Fully provisioned or all-inclusive charters can simplify your budgeting by covering many expenses upfront.
  • Be Mindful of Crew Gratuity: Factor in the crew’s gratuity when planning your budget. It’s a significant expense and a customary practice.
  • Consider Trip Insurance: Trip insurance can protect you from unforeseen circumstances and potential additional costs.
  • Review the Charter Agreement: Thoroughly review the charter agreement to understand what is and isn’t included in your charter rate.

Yacht chartering can be an unforgettable experience, and understanding the costs involved is essential to ensure a stress-free journey. By considering base charter rates, additional fees, and seasonal price variations, and following our budgeting tips, you can embark on your yacht charter adventure with confidence, knowing that you’ve planned for a seamless and enjoyable voyage on the high seas. Happy sailing!

superyacht charter costs Octopus

How much does it really cost to charter a luxury yacht?

Booking your first charter can be a tricky stretch of water to navigate, especially when you're confronted with provisioning allowances and price variations before even stepping on board. To make things a little easier, we have put together the ultimate guide to all the costs you might encounter when booking your dream yacht charter vacation...

If you want to charter a luxury superyacht , understanding the costs involved can seem a little daunting first time around. The two important things to understand are your base price, referred to as a "charter fee" or "charter rate", together with what you will be expected to pay on top of it. All-inclusive charter rates are not industry practice, so guests should expect to be paying more than just the basic fees listed on broker’s websites or in their brochures.

The best analogy for determining the cost of your charter is with buying a car. It’s never quite as easy as just walking into a showroom and saying, “I’ll take the blue one.” Immediately the salesman will whip out his order pad and start asking questions. “Do you want a radio?” “How about the fancy wheels?” “Did you want the two-tone paint?”

Yacht brokers will be able to provide you with an accurate estimation of all the costs involved in advance, but here is a breakdown of what to expect.

What is a yacht “charter”?

At a basic level, chartering a yacht means paying a fee to rent out an owner’s superyacht for an agreed period of time with a pre-arranged itinerary of where you will be cruising on board. During a charter vacation you will have access to all of the superyacht’s amenities which could include a swimming pool, beach club or cinema, as well as the toybox, which often provides equipment for water sports like wakeboarding, snorkelling or water skiing. During charters, guests will be looked after by the yacht’s crew, who will take care of your every need, including ferrying you to and from shore, washing laundry and providing meals cooked by the yacht’s chef.

How much does it cost to charter a superyacht?

Across BOAT International's listings, a charter vacation can range from a minimum of €14,000 per week (20 metre yacht George V ) to a maximum of €2,200,000 per week (126.2 Octopus ). Generally speaking, the bigger the yacht the bigger the cost of the charter, but this isn't always the case. There are actually many more factors that can influence the basic charter fee – not to mention the add-on expenses that are involved.

According to averages taken from BOAT International’s listings, smaller superyachts measuring under 30 metres LOA will have a weekly charter rate somewhere around €40,000 while yachts between 30 and 40 metres will weigh in at an average of €70,895 per week.

Over 40 metres is when the charter rate will move into the €100,000 per week range, with yachts between 50 and 60 metres costing on average €219,826 per week while yachts in the 60 to 70 metre range average €444,521. Mega yachts measuring 80 metres and over will, on average, set charterers back by around €1.7 million a week. This is just an average price, however, and each yacht’s charter rate will be affected by a number of aspects from how many cabins and amenities there are on board to the dates and locations of where the charter takes place.

What factors can influence the base price of a yacht charter?

High season vs. low season.

In general, you’ll find two basic rates: high season and low season, usually with specific dates set for each. In addition, you’ll find chartering around special events that are more expensive: New Year’s Eve , Monaco during the Grand Prix , Cannes during the Film Festival , an Olympic destination or on the sidelines of the America’s Cup .

The key is to choose your times carefully. A difference of one week (from high season into low season) can significantly alter the cost, while still providing the same weather as the more expensive period. For yachts measuring between 30 and 40 metres, the high season price could result in an increased cost of around €6,000 per week. The highest increase in an average charter rate between low and high seasons can be seen in BOAT's listings of yachts measuring between 60 and 80 metres, with high season rates potentially costing around €33,000 extra.

The yacht itself

The yacht itself is a major factor in determining the charter cost, but it’s not just about size. A recently launched charter yacht from a famed builder with an experienced and popular charter crew is going to command top prices for its size range. Yachts with a legendary name or a history of celebrity ownership (for example Malcolm Forbes's iconic charter yacht Highlander , which has hosted everyone from Elizabeth Taylor to HRH Prince Charles) can also ask higher rates just for the “fame” value. And yachts with special features, such as cinemas or exceptional water toys like a submarine are also pricier.

Three different 30 metre charter yachts may vary in cost by as much as €75,000. Ask your broker to explain the differences. One yacht may have a larger and more experienced crew or a big-name chef, another yacht may be a little tired, another may not be in a prime location. It’s important to understand why the prices are higher or lower.

If a yacht has a gap in its charter calendar to fill, for example following an unexpected cancellation, some brokers will occasionally offer a time-limited charter fee discount offer .

What is included in a charter contract?

Knowing the base price of your charter is just the starting point. Depending on the location, which often governs the terms of the contract , more or less may be included in the inital fee, such as insurance or cancellation policies. Bear in mind that every charter yacht, because they are privately owned and the owner sets the rules, is slightly different. One yacht may include a “standard” selection of wines with every meal and charge only to upgrade the vintages, while on another yacht the wines are a la carte. Below we look at the different types of charter contracts you may come across when booking your yacht.

Mediterranean Yacht Brokers Association (MYBA)

Under Mediterranean Yacht Brokers Association (MYBA) charter contracts, which are arguably the most common, the charterer is charged for the hire of the yacht, fuel, marina fees, crew wages, guests' personal laundry, insurance, water toys, food and drink as well as engine room maintenance and miscellaneous expenses. As a round number, which depends on how much fuel the yacht uses and how fancy the meals and drinks, you can expect to add 25% to 50% of your charter cost.

Caribbean Terms Inclusive (CTI)

The Caribbean Terms Inclusive (CTI), which is sometimes called Standard Caribbean Terms (SCT), is another type of charter contract which is more inclusive. It accounts for three meals per day and fuel for four hours of cruising a day. Some yachts under CTI terms include basic beverages (not vintage wines or champagnes), but this is mainly in the Virgin Islands.

Greek Terms (GT)

For yachts being chartered around the Greek Islands and mainland, another common phrase you may come across is "Greek Terms" or a GT contract. This will similarly include the cost of the yacht and its equipment, crew wages and laundry as well as any specific berthing fees required for Greek waters.

What is an Advance Provisioning Allowance?

Part of your yacht charter contract will include an Advance Provisioning Allowance or APA. This is an amount of about 30-35 per cent of the charter fee for a “plus all expenses” charter and about five per cent for an “all-inclusive” charter. It is sent to the yacht before the charter to provision the yacht according to your preferences.

During the charter, the captain will provide a running account of the usage of the funds and, at the end of the charter, will present a detailed accounting along with any unused funds in cash. If the APA balance runs low during the charter, the client is expected to provide the captain with a sufficient amount in cash to cover the needs for the remainder of their stay. Since many charterers prefer not to carry quantities of cash, the charter broker can hold an amount and release it to the captain as needed. Here is what is covered by an APA...

Food and drink

Before you book a charter, your charter broker can provide you with a good estimate of the additional costs that will be incurred. Food is one of the largest and it is directly proportional to how exuberantly you plan to dine. If you expect several bottles of Champagne with every meal, then you can assume that your costs will be higher.

Fuel can be another cost and, again, it depends on how much the yacht cruises and how fast, too. Time spent at anchor will include the fuel for the generators, while shore-side electricity when at a dock is also an extra. Don’t forget that fuel is also charged for the tenders and water toys , so you’ll pay for the fuel used while zipping around on the jetskis.

Harbour fees and dockage

Harbour fees and dockage are a variable that can range from exorbitant (a front-row dock at the Monaco Grand Prix) to little or nothing in some areas.

Communications

Communications are another cost and, with the options for satellite communications and Internet, an important one for most charterers.

Delivery fee

A delivery fee is usually charged if a charterer requests to board (or depart) a yacht at a distance from where the yacht is normally based.

All the yacht laundry, including towels, sheets and table linens, is included in the charter fee, but some yachts charge to launder personal items of the charterer. Most, however, will do small quantities of personal laundry as a service but they usually won’t be responsible for delicate items.

At the end of each yacht charter, a cash tip is given by the primary guest to the captain to divide amongst the crew. Standards for a crew tip can range from five to 20 per cent of the base charter rate. This is not a cost included in the APA but some brokers will advise that any APA funds leftover at the end of the charter can be used to make up part for the tip. To learn more, read our handy charter tipping guide .

One cost not directly related to the operation of the charter yacht is insurance for the charterer. Cancellation and curtailment insurance is the charter version of travel insurance on airlines and cruise ships: It covers the charterer for the costs if unforeseen circumstances force a cancellation or shortening of the charter. Your charter broker can provide this insurance, which is a wise investment.

Charterers may be charged VAT, or “value added tax”, on the charter fees. Many European countries and a few Caribbean islands add VAT, but it is a complex issue that depends on where you board and debark the yacht, so rely on your charter broker for advice.

Made to measure

While it may seem at first glance that the extras or "hidden costs" on many charters are just a way to pad your bill, they are actually a benefit to the charterer. Food and drink, for example, is custom-ordered to meet the client’s requests, so the level of expense is entirely up to the charterer. Fuel is only charged if it is used and other fees are also at the discretion of the charterer. So you do have a way to control your costs and still savour a luxurious charter. What is important to remember is that each charter is unique depending on the needs and desires of the guests, and brokers and crew will always work to satisfy those demands. Ready to get started? How Much Does It Cost to Charter a Yacht? (Price Chart)

How Much Does It Cost To Charter A Yacht? (Price Chart)

Yachts are luxurious boats you can rent for the weekend for the required price. Typically, a yacht charter cost depends on its length and desired amenities. The advantage of this option is in absolute freedom, so rigid commercial cruise ship timings and crowd won’t restrict your enjoyment.

There are two possibilities with such a choice. You can enjoy privacy or pick out the yachts with the crew dedicated to your needs. In both cases, you will have an unforgettable sailing time but be prepared that such a pleasure will cost you a lot. Let’s see.

What Yacht Charter Is?

What Yacht Charter Is

Yacht charter is actually renting an owner’s yacht for an agreed period, typically a week. An average yacht charter can cost you about $12,500 per week in the high season, while prices are lower in the low season.

You can find a comfortable yacht for $10,000 per week in that period. You will have full access to all available amenities while sailing, like:

  • Swimming pool
  • Water toys, such as equipment for water skiing, wakeboarding , or snorkeling

You can charter a yacht anywhere worldwide. The only condition is to find the port and yacht type you want to rent. Most owners will provide an experienced captain and crew, and it is practically impossible renting a yacht longer than 50 feet (15 m) to sail on your own.

The yacht’s crew will care for all your needs during charters, including ferrying, providing meals, or washing laundry.

If you want to be a captain , you need to have the Yachtmaster Ocean license, but some countries require the equivalent license. In that case, you should find a smaller yacht or a possibly bigger one located in Croatia.

However, the first step is to determine the yacht type suitable for your needs that you want to rent.

Crewed Catamaran

Popular Catamaran is suitable for group sailing and offers enough space, comfort, luxury, and privacy. You can charter this boat type when looking for a family vacation at an affordable price.

Charter price $30,000 for four sea view rooms $27,000 for four cabins
Excursions $2,000 Included
Daily watersports $2,800 Included
Three gourmet meals a day $8,400 ($150 per person) Included
Drinks $1,400 ($50 per person) Included
Transfers $150 Included

You should take advantage of Catamarans convenience and discover beautiful bays while dining close to the water. Modern fittings and experienced crews will offer the feeling of being on a luxurious yacht, but with the freedom of a sailing yacht.

Crewed Sailing yacht

This yacht is a comfortable option to enjoy sailing surrounded by luxury. Sailing yachts excellently head upwind but are suitable only for experienced sailors.

Crewed Motor yacht

This option is for you when you know the exact location to visit and have a precise itinerary in advance. So, this boat will allow you to get there while spending relaxing time.

Crewed Superyacht

Superyacht offers the holiday like in a 5-star-hotel. The cabins are comfortable, often with hot tubs and an exercise room. Plus, you have internet access and luxury water toys at your disposal at any moment.

Such a charter vacation will cost you at least $15,500 per week for a 65.5 feet (20 m) long yacht. A maximum price can go to approximately $3,400,000 per week for 450 feet (135 m) long super luxury yacht.

Factors That Affect Yacht Charter Costs

Factors That Affect Yacht Charter Costs

Yachts are almost always privately owned, so yacht charter costs primarily depend on the owner’s demand. That is a reason for the wide price range in this field, but some general frameworks still exist and are related to several factors.

The yacht production year, design, brand, water toys, crew reputation, and the previous owner will significantly affect the yacht charter costs . Boats with a reputation as the most luxurious or largest and those whose former owners are celebrities will be more pricey.

For instance, the iconic charter yacht ‘Highlander’ has higher rates for so-called fame value since it hosted many celebrities, including Elizabeth Taylor and Prince Charles.

< 80 feet (24.5 m) $22,000 to $51,000 $15,000 to $35,000 $7,000 to $16,000

(24.5 – 36.5 m)

$51,000 to $115,000 $35,000 to $80,000 $16,000 to $36,000
120 to 150 feet

(36.5 – 46 m)

$115,000 to $218,000 $80,000 to $150,000 $36,000 to $68,000
> 150 feet (46 m) $218,000 to $725,000 $150,000 to $500,000 $68,000 to $225,000
< 80 feet (24.5 m) $14,500 to $30,000 $10,000 to $20,000 $4,500 – $9,000
80 to 120 feet

(24.5 – 36.5 m)

$30,000 to $73,000 $20,000 to $50,000 $9,000 – $22,500
120 to 150 feet

(36.5 – 46 m)

$73,000 to $145,000 $50,000 to $100,000 $22,500 – $45,000
> 150 feet (46 m) $145,000 to $300,000 $100,000 to $200,000 $45,000 – $90,000
< 50 feet (15 m) $14,500 to $22,000 $10,000 to $215,000 $4,500 to $7,000
50 to 65 feet

(15 – 20 m)

$22,000 to $44,000 $15,000 to $30,000 $6,750 to $13,500
65 to 80 feet

(20 – 24.5 m)

$44,000 to $73,000 $25,000 to $50,000 $12,000 to $22,500
> 80 feet (24.5 m) $58,000 to $145,000 $40,000 to $100,000 $18,000 to $45,000

However, the yacht size will have the most significant impact on the renting price. Simply said, the bigger yachts will cost you more.

For instance, a week’s charter will cost you approximately $20,000 to $80,000 when you pick out a 65 to 80 feet (20 – 24.5 m) yacht. On the other hand, renting an 80 to 100 feet (24.5 – 30.5 m) long model is more expensive, and its price will be $80,000 and $120,000.

As you can expect, a weekly charter rate for over 100 feet (30.5 m) long superyacht is at least $100,000 and often more expensive. Renting a super-luxury mega yacht longer than 200 feet (61 m) goes from at least $300,000 to over $1,000,000.

In rare cases, you can find a charter fee discount offer. It is always time-limited, typically when a particular boat has a gap in the charter calendar due to an unexpected cancellation.

Destination

Destination

As you can expect, the charter destination plays a significant part in charter costs. For example, Mediterranean and Bahamas yacht charters prices are more competitive, while places without large charter fleets will be more costly.

Typically, all charters outside the USVI and BVI will be expensive since cruising permits and taxes for remote destinations are higher. Finally, sailing to Alaska can be pricey since renting is available only for half a year because of the harsh weather. You will probably need to make a reservation in advance.

Trip duration

Trip duration

In most cases, the yacht charter is for seven to ten days on average, but sometimes owners accept a shorter duration. In such rare cases, a minimum stay is five days.

The trip length directly affects the charter costs. If the primary price included two hours of sailing , you should count on a 50% higher rate when deciding to use the yacht for three hours.

Be aware that the yacht charter price won’t go down for longer holidays, so you won’t get a discount and pay less when renting the boat for a longer period. The price for a week is the same whether you rent a boat for a week, two weeks, or a month.

Season

Yacht charter prices vary depending on the season, like most other touristic services. Therefore, you can expect higher rental costs during the high season. However, you should be careful with dates since they are not the same for all destinations.

For instance, high seasons in the Caribbean are New Year’s Eve, Christmas, and all February. On the other hand, you should count on the highest prices in July and August when you plan to sail in the Mediterranean.

The yacht charter rates are often higher during famous festivals, carnivals, and shows. The most expensive destinations based on dates include:

  • Olympic destination
  • The Film Festival in Cannes
  • Grand Prix in Monaco
  • America’s Cup

If you only want to use a yacht during your vacation, you should plan sailing carefully. Sometimes, only a difference of one week can significantly affect the charter costs.

In other words, you can rent a boat the first low season week when the weather conditions are still the same as the previous high season week. However, it will cost you 15% to 30%, or approximately $6,000 to $30,000 less, depending on the yacht length.

The number of passengers

The number of passengers

The group size is a primary thing you should consider before renting a yacht since it will directly influence the yacht type you need.

For instance, a monohull boat is ideal for a small family, but a group of 8 to 10 will need at least a catamaran. Finally, you should pick out a large yacht when planning a big party for many people.

All-inclusive or plus expenses

1. all-inclusive.

It is a complete service you can get for your money. In this case, the rates include:

  • Accompanying crew
  • Meals and snacks
  • Open standard bar drinking
  • Onboard watersports equipment

Be aware that there are some limitations regarding excessive consumption as well as consuming champagnes, extraordinary brands, and vintage wines.

A standard crew gratuity of 15 to 20% of the charter rate is excluded from the all-inclusive charter. Finally, you will need to pay separately for the final cleaning, insurance , dockage, and necessary taxes.

All-inclusive is an excellent option for renting monohull charters, catamarans, and yachts under 80 feet (24.5 m).

Crew yes yes
Crew gratuity no no
Food no yes
Drinks no yes, with restrictions
Diving no sometimes
Water toys yes yes
Fuel no yes
Electric and water no yes
Communication no no
Dockage no no
Airport/boat transport no no
Taxes no no

2. Plus expenses

This service typically includes:

  • Yacht with the crew
  • Yacht insurance

In this case, you should pay for all operating expenses at cost, including:

  • Food and drink
  • Consumables
  • Communications
  • Dockage, cruising taxes, port fees, and port agent fees

Typically, the owner will charge these extra costs from an Advance Provisioning Allowance, increasing the yacht charter fee by 30 to 35%.

It is the most often option on motor yachts, higher-end sailing yachts, and superyachts since the overall costs significantly vary, depending on the number of passengers and their demands.

This term includes many different equipment and amenities, like:

  • Paddleboard
  • Underwater sea bob
  • High-powered smaller boat (yacht tender)
  • Personal submarine

Some super luxury yachts can also come with:

Since the primary price doesn’t include these toys, you need to pay for the required ones.

Other factors

The owner will always recommend you to consider paying for optional extras, like:

The outboard engine – It will cost you €80 (approximately $90) to the charter cost but save you from rowing ashore in case of an accident.

Safety net – It is necessary equipment if you sail with children, which will cost you €80 (approximately $90) for one.

Adding crew – Paying for a cook or hostess can be convenient for a private cruise if you can afford it. That satisfaction will cost you €100 (approximately $110) a day, but keep in mind that the chef’s daily allowance is slightly higher.

Skipper – A professional help is always welcome, so you should consider hiring a skipper to find the best routes and places worth visiting.

Food costs for the crew – You should need to include the food for the crew on the paying list.

Yacht chartering is an excellent way to vacation and discover exotic islands and beautiful waterfront towns. You should pick out a boat of the proper size and a reputable yacht broker to help you with the organization. It is an expensive but ultimate pleasure you will remember for life.

Factors Impacting Cost

Type and size of yacht that you can rent for a week.

The cost of renting a yacht week-long largely depends on the type and size of the yacht. Motor yachts, sailboats, catamarans, and super yachts with different price tags. Larger yachts with more onboard amenities will generally cost more.

Season and Location

The time of year and the location also significantly impact the cost. High season, typically during summer months in the Mediterranean or winter in the Caribbean , will have higher rates. Off-season charters can be more affordable.

Sample Price Ranges when you rent a yacht for a week

Here are some example price ranges:

  • 40-50 ft Catamaran : $15,000 - $25,000 per week
  • 50-60 ft Motor Yacht : $25,000 - $50,000 per week
  • 60-80 ft Motor Yacht : $50,000 - $100,000 per week

Additional Costs

Fuel, food, and beverages.

For non-inclusive charters, additional costs include fuel, which varies based on distance traveled, and food and beverages. Provisioning can be customized to your preferences, but it's an extra expense to consider.

Tipping the crew or your yacht charter guide is customary and usually amounts to 10-20% of the charter fee, depending on the level of service provided.

Docking Fees

Docking fees vary by location and can accumulate, particularly in popular ports and marinas. These fees are not typically included in the base charter rate.

Understanding these costs helps you plan a realistic budget for your yacht charter boat vacation. By being aware of the various factors and potential additional expenses, you can make informed decisions and enjoy a seamless and luxurious yachting experience.

The most fabulous yachts to charter this summer

There are an estimated 6,000 superyachts — vessels that are more than 100 feet long — at sea in 2024

As summer reaches its peak across the Northern Hemisphere, it’s hard to imagine a better way of spending a vacation than channeling your inner ship captain and sailing across the ocean.

In recent years, yacht companies have reported a boom in sales — far from the decline that many in the industry feared, due to both the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and the economic realities of the Russia-Ukraine War.

“I spent my days [in 2020] doing worst-case scenarios and drawing up the budgets to go with them,” Giovanna Vitelli, chairwoman of Azimut|Benetti, the world’s largest yacht manufacturer, told the Economist in 2023.

Instead, her company reported a 23% growth in production value in 2023 —a reality that is not unique to just one yacht manufacturer. The luxury yacht market is expected to grow in value from $7.67 billion in 2023 to $17.33 billion by 2032, according to a recent report from Fortune Business Insights .

Analysts attribute the ships’ rise in popularity to the increasing number of extremely wealthy individuals . Yachts have long been considered a status symbol — a reality that has only increased as wealth becomes concentrated in the hands of a small group of high status individuals .

There are an estimated 6,000 superyachts —vessels that are more than 100 feet long — at sea as of this year. This is nearly quadruple the number of yachts seen in the ocean just three decades ago, according to Bloomberg .

Aside from an increase in popularity, the yacht industry has seen other changes in recent years. Increasingly, those in the market for a luxury ship are turning to alternate means of powering their vessels, as critics point to the excess emissions traditional yachts produce simply for recreational use.

In their 2024 report, Fortune Business Insights highlighted the growing trend of electrification as a significant area of growth in the coming years.

“A tough regulatory environment for traditional yachts and rising fuel prices will pave the way for the solid growth of electric yachts in the future,” the report reads. “Huge investments from various manufacturers and government support measures will accelerate the demand for electric yachts.”

Jaw-dropping cost behind retrieving and attaching anchor to yacht leaves fans in shock

Below Deck cast members don’t just serve glamorous yacht-goers, they retrieve and attach anchors, clean up after guests, and receive a pretty hefty tip. They also provide serious drama – and we love it.

Captain Sandy Yawn has dropped the crazy amount it costs to retrieve and attach an anchor to a yacht. The Below Deck captain may have let slip the costs, but fans have only been left confused.

Below Deck captain drops anchor cost

Below Deck captain, Sandy Yawn, revealed it costs more than $40K to attach and retrieve and anchor on a yacht. The windless was experiencing an issue, meaning it wasn’t pulling the anchor up properly.

She decides to leave the anchor, running the risk of losing it. They put a buoy on the chain so it can be retrieved later. After docking at the marina, Sandy and the team were reunited with their anchor.

A message on the screen pointed out that the entire anchor retrieval and reattachment process came out to $40,419.93. Sandy claimed the operation is “smooth” and involves divers floating the anchor up.

Bravo fans ‘confused’ over anchor

When Sandy attached an anchor on Below Deck, fans were left confused and missed the part where they fixed the windless before doing so. The anchor was cut off to be retrieved later.

However, when the crew have docked and the anchor returned, they just started winding it onto the windless – or so fans thought. It was quick to miss, but they did actually fix the broken windless.

One viewer asked, “Did they fix it and not show it? or did they just not fix it and are still going to use it in the broken state?” However, a crew came on board to fix it before the anchor was retrieved.

Yachties earn a hefty tip aboard

Although it costs thousands just to attach and retrieve an anchor, Below Deck cast members earn a huge tip. Guests are asked to tip a minimum of $15K (£11.5K) on top of the costs of renting the yacht.

The crew can actually receive anywhere from $15,000 to $30,000 to share in tip money for a three-day charter, which is basically enough for a down payment on a house!

While an average tip is between $15,000-$20,000, it doesn’t seem much when you compare it to how much charter guests pay. It costs $275,000 which goes up to $310,000 in high season.

Bad idea Biden strikes again. His rent control plan is a feeble attempt to buy votes.

President joe biden is still pandering to voters with poor policy ideas. even as, or perhaps especially because, his candidacy hangs by a thread..

Portrait of Nicole Russell

Strange and awful news has been swirling all around us recently, creating a lot of uncertainty. But one thing hasn't changed: President Joe Biden is still pandering to voters with poor policy ideas. Even as, but perhaps especially because, his candidacy hangs by a thread .

Biden last week proposed to institute a  5% cap on rental price increases nationwide. The rent control measure is one way he hopes to curb housing costs that have soared in recent years. More to the point: It's also how he hopes to win back voters who have abandoned him after a disastrous debate performance last month.

The cap would apply to landlords with more than 50 units , affecting roughly 20 million rental units nationwide . If corporate landlords increase tenants' rent more than 5%, they would lose the ability to write off depreciation values, which is an important tax deduction for many businesses. Congress would have to approve the proposal, and that isn't going to happen this year with Republicans in charge of the House.

The rent control plan is a terrible idea, but it's easy to see why Biden latched on to it less than four months before the election. A third of households rent, making up 45 million housing units, according to Forbes . That's a lot of voters.

About half of renters pay over 30% of their income on rent , which the Department of Housing and Urban Development marks as "cost-burdened." A smaller portion of Americans pay more than 50% of their income on rent.

And because the cost to buy a home , including high mortgage rates, is so expensive, many Americans must continue renting.

Rent control is not the best way to lower rent

An economist I interviewed confirmed that rent control measures are almost always a bad idea.

"Rent caps have many unintended consequences, foremost that fewer homes will be built," Tobias Peter, codirector of the American Enterprise Institute’s Housing Center , told me. "It will also create inequality in the rental market −those that will benefit versus those that won’t. And it will lead to inefficiencies − people unwilling to move or downsize because they have a rent-controlled unit."

Peter pointed to St. Paul, Minnesota, as a recent example of why rent control doesn't work . New construction collapsed in St. Paul after the city passed rent control. In Minneapolis, however, the other half of the Twin Cities, the price of renting went down after more homes were built.

"Rent is driven by supply and demand," Peter said. "The country has been underbuilding for decades and we are short millions of housing units. At the same time, the federal government and the Fed pumped lots of stimulus into the economy during the pandemic. More demand against a limited supply led to higher rents."

Homelessness crisis: I lived in a homeless encampment for a week. I saw how Housing First doesn't work.

A better solution: Embrace supply and demand

Biden is right about rent being absurdly high in much of the nation, and home ownership is out of reach for many Americans. Homelessness, driven in part by high housing costs, also is an epidemic that seems insurmountable . It's right to want to solve America's housing crisis. But a rent cap is not the way to do it.

The housing market is much like the rest of our economy, which is rooted in the balance of supply and demand.

"Markets provide abundance," Peter said. "The market would stabilize rents on its own if it were allowed to function properly. Unfortunately, actions from all levels of government – federal, state and local – have constrained the market’s ability to respond to the price signal."

So, what can help lower housing costs? Loosen or abolish overzealous or frivolous regulations that add to the cost of everything that goes into building. Expediting the permitting process, lifting tariffs on construction materials, tossing out overly strict Occupational Safety and Health Administration requirements and loosening restrictions on logging also would help to reduce costs.

The left must own up to their rhetoric: Biden admits putting Trump in 'bull's-eye' was a mistake. It's a little late for that.

Progressive policies that pander to voters fail

“Once you deregulate, the market will respond,” Peter said.

That is an epic slogan, one I want to plaster on the doors of every classroom from kindergarten to graduate schools. It's especially helpful for people who have bought into the progressive mindset that more regulations and laws will improve the functions of businesses across America. They don't. They often exacerbate things instead.

Biden's rent cap is similar to his executive orders on student loan forgiveness, which the courts have consistently struck down . Both are outside the scope of what government can and should do, and both are more about pandering to voters than adopting sound policies.

The Democratic Party is a chaotic mess. So are Joe Biden's policies.

Biden administration to unveil new actions aimed at lowering housing costs

President Joe Biden

WASHINGTON — The White House plans to unveil new actions to lower the cost of housing, according to a fact sheet obtained by NBC News.

President Joe Biden will call on Congress to pass a law that would ensure landlords capped rent increases at 5% or faced losing out on federal tax breaks.

If it is taken up by Congress, the plan would apply to landlords who hold more than 50 units, meaning more than 20 million units nationwide could be affected, according to the White House.

There would also be exceptions for new construction and certain renovations.

“The policy is a bridge to rents stabilizing as President Biden’s plan to build more takes hold,” the White House said in a fact sheet. “The President believes that this combination of anti-gouging policies and historic levels of support to build more affordable housing effectively balances the needs of tenants without limiting incentives for more supply.”

Separately, the Biden administration is looking to sell extra federal land to be repurposed into affordable housing, according to the White House. The housing policies will be made public Tuesday as Biden visits Nevada, a key swing state in the election. Local officials in the state have identified more than 560 acres of public land that could be used for housing, the White House said, estimating that the land could be used to build up to 15,000 “affordable rental and homeownership units for Nevadans.”

The White House’s actions come against the backdrop of the first night of the Republican National Convention, where former President Donald Trump officially became the GOP presidential nominee.

The economy and the cost of living is one of Biden’s primary vulnerabilities in his re-election bid. An NBC News poll conducted in April found that voters preferred Trump over Biden by 22 percentage points on the issue of who would better deal with inflation and the cost of living.

At the same time, the poll indicated that 23% of registered voters found inflation and the cost of living to be the most important issue facing the country.

Biden won Nevada in 2020, though by a narrow margin. Multiple polls indicate Trump is slightly ahead of him in the state.

The overall race remains closely competitive, and an NBC News poll this month found that Biden trails Trump by 2 points nationally. The July poll’s results are similar to polling before Biden’s widely criticized debate performance.

What Is Biden’s 5% Rent Cap Plan? President Sparks Confusion With Vow To Crack Down on Rent Hikes at NATO Press Conference

President Joe Biden appeared to announce new plans to crack down on rent hikes at his press conference following the NATO summit in Washington, DC, on Thursday.

During the wide-ranging press conference, Biden sought to allay fears that his reelection campaign is unviable after a disaster debate performance against Donald Trump last month. While commenting on the economy, Biden slipped in the apparent campaign vow.

“It’s time — for example, if I’m reelected, we’re going to make sure that rents are kept at 5% increase, cor- — corporate rents for cor- — apartments and the like and homes are limited to 5%,” he said, according to the official White House transcript .

Biden’s comments could indicate that he plans to tighten a 10% annual rent increase cap that the Department of Housing and Urban Development previously announced in April, which applies only to affordable units financed through the Low Income Housing Tax Credit program.

But the president’s phrasing sparked speculation in some housing policy quarters that he is preparing to propose a broader national cap on “corporate rents” for traditional housing units.

The White House declined to offer specifics clarifying Biden’s remark, but pointed to numerous steps the administration has taken to protect renters, including emergency rental assistance to 8 million renters during the COVID-19 pandemic and proposals to crack down on junk rental fees and price-fixing.

“The President has taken a number of actions to cap rents and crack down on price gouging by corporate landlords, and will continue to take action to build on these efforts,” White House spokesperson Jeremy M. Edwards told Realtor.com® in a statement.

Is Biden planning a national rent control plan?

It is possible that Biden simply misspoke about the administration’s previously announced 10% rent cap on LIHTC units, misidentifying the level of the cap in question.

The prior policy on LIHTC units capped rent increases at either 5% or double the percentage change in national median income, whichever is higher. The Biden administration’s new rule limits any increases to 10%, regardless of how quickly incomes rise.

LIHTC (often pronounced “ly-tec”) is a federal tax credit program to encourage private investment in affordable housing projects. The program is responsible for at least 3.65 million affordable housing units placed in service since 1987, according to HUD.

However, housing policy experts say it is also possible that Biden’s comment inadvertently revealed previously unannounced plans for a broader crackdown on what the administration calls “rent gouging by corporate landlords” in traditional rental units.

“It’s not the first time that he’s mentioned wanting to cap rents,” says Sarah Saadian , senior vice president of public policy and field organizing at the National Low Income Housing Coalition. “I’d be really interested to know if the administration is planning a move on that, because we’ve been pushing for a long time to put in place really strong renter protections, and one of those is anti-rent-gouging.”

During his debate last month with Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, Biden made comments on a rent cap that went largely overlooked in the furor over his poor performance.

“We’re going to make sure we cap rents, so corporate greed can’t take over,” the Democratic incumbent said in his first answer at the debate.

The National Apartment Association, an industry group representing multifamily property landlords, responded to Biden’s latest remarks at the NATO conference with a furious statement.

“Implying that rent control will solve the nation’s housing crisis is the easy way out. Rent caps, more commonly known as rent control, are failed policies that don’t work—research has shown it, the lack of affordability in rent-controlled jurisdictions reinforces it and statements from countless economists across generations and the political spectrum are crystal clear,” the group said.

How would a national rent cap work?

If the Biden administration sought to impose a broader cap on rent increases in traditional rental units, one possible mechanism to do so would be through the Federal Housing Finance Agency, an independent financial regulator.

For example, just on Friday, FHFA announced new tenant protections for multifamily properties financed by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, both government-sponsored enterprises.

Those rules require landlords with government-backed loans to provide a five-day grace period for late rent payments, as well as a 30-day written notice of a rent increase or lease expiration. The new rules will be written into new multifamily loan agreements starting in February.

It’s possible that FHFA could use a similar mechanism to impose rent caps on properties that are financed by Fannie and Freddie, says Saadian.

“We weighed in with FHFA to encourage them to apply renter protections to all properties with federally backed mortgages,” she says. “We really want to see FHFA move forward with much more robust renter protections, and so hopefully that’s what [Biden] was hinting at.”

An FHFA official told Realtor.com that the agency has not ruled out any new measures for tenant protections, including examining rent increases. But the person said that no decisions have been made on a timetable for future announcements, and that potential changes would have to be carefully studied for any legal or other risks.

The official also stressed that FHFA is an independent agency, and that the tenant protections it announced Friday were not in response to Biden’s recent remarks, but rather were the product of a years-long process in conjunction with Fannie and Freddie to assess, identity, and address the challenges faced by tenants and housing providers.

If—and it may be a big if —the Biden administration is planning a broad 5% cap on rents, it would be a historic move.

The federal government has never imposed broad nationwide restrictions on rent increases by landlords. Historically, rent control policies in the U.S. have been implemented at the state and local levels, not federally.

Local rent control policies in the past have helped many people afford to remain in their rental units. But some economists warn that if they aren’t carefully crafted, they could distort the market or discourage new construction.

“Rent caps can help tenants mitigate affordability concerns by limiting rent increases and reducing the stress of potential evictions. However, rent caps could also negatively impact the supply side by limiting developers’ potential returns on investment,” says Realtor.com economist Jiayi Xu .

“To address today’s rental affordability challenges, more new construction is needed to drive prices down,” she says. “Therefore, finding a balance between rent caps and housing supply is crucial in today’s market.”
