“Design is an extremely powerful tool, as it can persuade people to make the right choice,” said Gustav Hasselskog, CEO & founder of Candela in a statement.

“Like the first time driving an electric car, you instantly feel that this is the future when the boat ‘takes off’—and now with the special gold details that we so proudly exhibit on our cars.”

The bling—or about as close to bling as one could get from a Swedish boat builder—is noteworthy. But what’s below the custom gray, seven-seat cockpit is what really counts. The C-8 is powered by a 100 kW electric motor and 69 kWh Polestar 2 battery that deliver a 65-mile range on a single charge, cruising at about 25 mph. What’s even more impressive is the 10 to 80 percent recharge in 30 minutes.

Candela C-8 Polestar Edition

Of course, the real differentiator are the hydraulic foils, which come into play at about 18 mph. They deliver two to three times more range than a conventional electric boat with much of its hull running under the water.

The special edition, available with either a carbon-fiber hardtop or an open version, has enough seating for eight passengers and the captain. The boat is priced at $450,000.

Man who went overboard in Tampa boat crash is found dead, officials say

  • Tony Marrero Times staff

A man who went overboard in a boat crash near the Howard Frankland Bridge early Wednesday morning has been found dead, authorities said.

The crash happened about 4:15 a.m. when a 20-foot boat with two people on board collided with a barge near the Howard Frankland, according to a Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission spokesperson. One of the people on board was thrown into the water. The other was injured and taken to a hospital.

Wildlife commission officers responded along with the U.S. Coast Guard and the Tampa Police Department to search for the boater on Wednesday.

In an update about 5 p.m., the wildlife commission said the boater was recovered from the water and declared dead. A spokesperson for the wildlife commission identified the boater as Jonathan Boucvalt but declined to provide further information, citing the ongoing investigation.

No other details were immediately available.

Making the right yacht choice involves many key points to think about. These include size, type, budget, use and preferences, like amenities . To decide wisely, assess each factor and see how important they are. Here’s a table of the main considerations when choosing a yacht:

Factors Description
Size Think about how many guests you’ll have and if you want a larger or smaller yacht.
Type Pick between motor, sail, catamaran or mega yachts based on your cruise plans and activities.
Budget Establish a realistic budget that covers purchase costs, upkeep, crew wages, insurance fees and mooring.
Intended Use Decide if you’ll mostly cruise or if you have special activities in mind like fishing or water sports.
Amenities and Features Figure out what features and amenities are essential for your comfort onboard, such as cabins, entertainment systems, water toys or a jacuzzi.

In addition, there are unique details you should consider, like if you plan to charter your yacht when not in use, go for a popular model. If privacy is important, choose a yacht with separate crew quarters. So, here are some tips for making the right choice:

  • Get expert advice from experienced yacht brokers or naval architects.
  • Choose respected brands that hold their value in case you resell.
  • Visit boat shows and yacht exhibitions to explore different models and talk to professionals.

By taking all factors into account and following these suggestions, you can find the perfect yacht that fits your needs. Whether for leisure or adventure, the right yacht will give you amazing memories on the sea.

Taiwan says it was warned by China to not interfere in the detention of Taiwanese boat crew

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — Taiwan said Wednesday that China warned its coast guard against interfering in the detention of a Taiwanese fishing boat, in what was seen as Beijing’s latest attempt to assert its territorial claims in the Taiwan Strait.

The incident comes as tensions have risen following the election of Taiwanese President William Lai Ching-te, whose party rejects unification with the mainland, and an apparent threat by Beijing to execute supporters of Taiwanese independence.

Liu Dejun, a spokesperson for China’s coast guard, said Wednesday that the Taiwanese fishing boat was detained on suspicion of illegal fishing. Liu said the boat violated a fishing moratorium in Chinese waters by trawling in a forbidden zone. Liu said the boat also was using nets that were finer than allowed by Chinese law.

Taiwan’s coast guard repeated its call for the release of the boat and its crew members, who were taken from waters off the Taiwanese-controlled island of Kinmen just off the Chinese coast on Tuesday night. That call was complicated by China’s refusal to communicate with Taiwan’s current government.

A spokesperson for Taiwan’s coast guard, Hsieh Ching-chin, said the boat was not in Chinese waters when it was boarded by Chinese agents and steered to a port in the Chinese province of Fujian.

Image

“First, we call on the (Chinese side) to provide an explanation, and second, to release the boat and its crew,” Hsieh said.

The Dajinman 88 was intercepted by two Chinese vessels and Taiwan dispatched three vessels to help, but one that got close to the fishing boat was blocked by three Chinese boats and told not to interfere, the Taiwanese coast guard said in an earlier statement.

Hsieh said four other Chinese boats joined in the operation, an indication of the massive expansion in recent years of China’s navy, coast guard and maritime militia.

The pursuit was called off to avoid escalating the conflict, Hsieh said.

The boat has a captain and five crew members, according to Taiwan’s official Central News Agency. The crew are Taiwanese and Indonesian.

The vessel was just over 20 kilometers (12 miles) from Jinjiang in mainland China when it was boarded, Taiwanese authorities said.

China claims self-governing Taiwan is its territory and says the island must come under its control.

Fishermen from both Taiwan and China regularly sail the stretch of water near Kinmen, and tensions have risen as the number of Chinese vessels has increased.

In February, two Chinese fishermen drowned while being chased by Taiwan’s coast guard off the coast of Kinmen, prompting Beijing to step up patrols.

China has been increasing military actions around Taiwan’s main island as well as the island groups of Kinmen and Matsu, which lie within sight of the Chinese coast. It also dispatches warplanes and navy ships daily around the island and holds military exercises, seen as rehearsals for a potential blockade or invasion.

Taiwan’s Defense Ministry said 20 Chinese People’s Liberation Army Air Force planes crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait between Tuesday and Wednesday.

Last month, China passed new injunctions threatening to hunt down and potentially execute “die-hard Taiwan independence separatists.” In response, Taiwan warned its citizens to avoid visiting the mainland and the semi-autonomous Chinese cities of Hong Kong and Macao.

On Tuesday, a spokesperson for the Chinese Cabinet’s Taiwan Affairs Office said the threat only affects a hard-core minority of Taiwanese, and accused Taiwan’s governing Democratic Progressive Party of “willfully misinterpreting” the action in an attempt to spread fear.

Taiwanese citizens overwhelmingly favor the island’s current de facto independence status, despite military threats and diplomatic isolation imposed by Beijing.

Taiwan, a former Japanese colony, rejoined China after World War II but split away in 1949 as the Nationalists under Chiang Kai-shek were were defeated on the mainland by Mao Zedong’s Communists. No peace treaty has ever been signed, even as ties including direct flights between the sides have burgeoned.

Associated Press writers Dake Kang in Beijing and Didi Tang in Washington contributed to this report.

Today, CIOs recognize if they just say no to generative AI, employees are probably going to find a way to use these tools anyway.

This phrase about AI not taking your job sounds smart — but is it true?

  • An economist has said, "AI won't take your job, it's somebody using AI that will take your job."
  • AI seems to be a positive for many workers, but some roles are more at risk of replacement.
  • Experts advise skilling up and leaning into soft human skills as AI becomes embedded in work life.

Insider Today

You may have heard a version of the phrase, "AI won't take your job, it's somebody using AI that will take your job."

Economist Richard Baldwin said the phrase at the 2023 World Economic Forum's Growth Summit, and variations of it have been mentioned since as people discuss the potential impacts of AI.

Baldwin told BI he wasn't sure if he coined the phrase, but the message is that AI won't replace humans, but it will give those who embrace it an advantage in the workforce.

In the 12 months since Baldwin shared his perspective, interest in artificial intelligence has only increased. A recent survey by consulting firm Bain & Company found that 85% of the companies surveyed said adopting AI was a top-five priority.

As companies ramp up their AI offerings and begin restructuring their workforce, many are revisiting the question of whether AI will be a job killer or an enhancer.

While it's still the early days of AI, we asked experts to weigh in. Should you be more worried about losing your job to a human using AI or to the AI itself?

Workers already see the benefit of AI at this stage

Baldwin said that AI is like a lawn mower or a power drill — it makes your job easier but it doesn't replace the human behind it. Other experts seemed to share a similar mindset that it's not advanced enough to function without direction, and for the most part, it helps people do better at their jobs.

Jasmine Escalera, a career coach at LiveCareer said incorporating AI can help automate repetitive tasks and "free up time to focus on upskilling."

Matt Betts, a research and development lead at leadership consulting firm RHR International, says it helps create efficiency so that consultants can focus on more impactful work, like interacting with the client.

Data has shown a similar trend that AI has helped many workers produce high-quality work in a shorter amount of time.

One study by MIT and Stanford from 2023 found that access to AI increased productivity by 14% on average, with a 34% impact on new or lower-skilled workers. A Morgan Stanley report indicated that workers with multiple income streams who used generative AI to increase their productivity made 21% more on average than those who didn't.

Related stories

AI may also be helping people land jobs. Career service LiveCareer surveyed 1,150 US workers in March and found that 85% of job seekers save time using AI for writing applications and 40% think AI improves their grammar, writing, and vocabulary.

The loss of some jobs is inevitable

AI has already redefined a number of roles and even if it doesn't take all jobs, it's bound to replace some.

IBM used to have 800 people working in HR and now has 60 because it was able to automate repetitive tasks, according to the company's marketing chief.

Klarna seems to be following a similar trajectory. The company said in a blog post in February that its AI assistant was doing the work of "700 full-time agents" after pumping the brakes on hiring.

OpenAI CTO Mira Murati also weighed in on the topic at a Dartmouth event on June 8 and turned heads when she said some creative jobs may disappear, but those that could be replaced by AI "shouldn't have been there in the first place."

Carl Benedikt Frey, a director of future and work at Oxford University, said that transportation and logistics are most likely to see outright automation moving forward. He also said warehousing, manufacturing, receptionists, cashiers, and translators are also roles that are moving toward automation or semi-automation.

It's a good idea to skill up

A March Goldman Sachs report found over 300 million jobs around the world could be impacted by AI. But it's impossible to predict how exactly they will change.

Career coach Escalera said the best path forward is to lean into human soft skills while skilling up and "adopting a mindset of continuous learning." For some who are hiring, AI is becoming a prerequisite.

Tripadvisor cofounder Steve Kaufer said on "The Logan Bartlett Show" that he asked candidates during interviews if they tried out new AI chatbots. He said software engineers who didn't experiment with AI tools usually didn't get the job.

"I just don't understand it," Kaufer said. "And I probably don't want to work with that individual."

CEO of global event company Empire Entertainment, J.B. Miller, said it's an "essential new skill set," especially in an industry that involves improvising. He said it cuts down time and helps with generating ideas for set designs and talent sourcing. He asks all new hires what AI tools they use.

"There's no world where I could employ somebody who's like, I don't know how to use Excel or I don't know how to navigate the internet or do an internet search or something online like that," Miller said.

"I think that the same is true of some of these basic, AI tools," he added.

Watch: Why "deployment of AI is top of mind for everybody," according to IBM's Jonathan Adashek
