“The NAVIX50 embodies our philosophy of creating vessels that excel in any environment,” Leapher CEO Yiannis Andriotis said in a statement. “From the Drake Passage to the coast of St. Tropez, this yacht redefines what’s possible in the sub-500GT category.”

The spacious interior includes six generous cabins, with the option for a seventh cabin or expanded skylounge. The guest cabin on the main deck can also be turned into a gym, wellness area, or an expanded owner’s suite. All guest cabins are equipped with king-size beds, while the owner’s suite is fitted with a plush super king-size bed. The yacht is also home to six crew cabins that can sleep up to 11.

The exterior decks are replete with alfresco dining areas, lounges, and sunbeds. The aft deck is arguably the standout, with two folding terraces, a large, 18-foot pool, a sprawling sunbathing area, a swim platform, and not one but two wet bars. At the opposite end, the foredeck doubles as a garage for two tenders.

“It [the NAVIX50] offers unparalleled versatility and luxury while maintaining an attractive value proposition for seasoned owners,” added Andriotis.

Leapher operates on a site formerly owned by cruise ship producer De Hoop that closed at the height of the pandemic. The yard is set to deliver the first NAVIX60 later this month. Christened Horizon, the 198-foot explorer will be on display at the Monaco Yacht Show from September 25 to 28.

Prada at Sail: How the House’s Luna Rossa Yachts Inspired Its Linea Rossa Line—and Blew Onto Its Runways

This weekend the fashion world’s attention will be turned firmly towards the runways of New York. At Prada, however, they will be keeping at least half an eye on the Mediterranean waters off Barcelona. For this is where the Milanese house is driving its seventh attempt to win the world’s oldest international sporting competition: The Louis Vuitton America’s Cup.

Fashion and sailing typically only intersect during preppy revivals (deck shoes) or at parties off Cannes (where the superyachts don’t come with sails, so strictly don’t even really count). Yet since 1997 and driven by the passion of chairman Patrizio Bertelli, Prada has persistently been locked in a deadly serious campaign to claim the sport’s greatest prize. Miuccia Prada christened the team’s latest boat—the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli AC75–earlier this year and during its opening days of competition over the last few weeks it has only narrowly avoided being struck by lightning as this year’s competition heats up.

While the ultimate objective is to contribute to Italy’s first-ever successful attempt on the (currently New Zealand-held) cup, Prada’s involvement in sailing has also indirectly helped steer it through the choppy waters of fashion. Back in 1997, as Prada prepared its first Luna Rossa challenge, it launched the Linea Rossa—the line in which it has outfitted its sailors ever since.

As Lorenzo Bertelli, Prada Group’s CMO and Head of CSR, said in an email: “Prada has combined the knowledge gained from developing technical sportswear for the Luna Rossa team with Prada’s aesthetics, resulting in the Linea Rossa collection.” He added: “The attitude to introduce technical fabrics and refinements typically belonging to sportswear into the everyday formal wardrobe embodies Prada’s unconventional spirit.”

Most especially in menswear, “technical” is often used as an adjective to indicate high-performance function—or at least the appearance of it—through technologically advanced fabrications. At Linea Rossa the garments, footwear, and eyewear are all rooted in that core performance sailing origin, which means the functionality and robustness of the products is more reliably high-spec, akin less to fashion pieces and more to items of industrial design.

That functionality hasn’t sunk Linea Rossa’s chances of the occasional appearance on Prada’s highest podium. In 1999, Linea Rossa featured on both men’s and women’s mainline runways (the menswear linked-hands section was especially memorable), and it made a return in 2000. The red line reappeared on both runways for a relaunch in 2018, just at the point when the house was setting sail from its longstanding home on Via Fogazzaro to its new berth at Fondazione Prada. The next time we saw Linea Rossa on the runway was during a stand-out section of its spring 2020 show in Shanghai. It most recently re-emerged during the doldrums of Covid, for spring summer 2021’s The Show That Never Happened .

According to Vogue’s skeleton crew of sailing watchers (just me, I think) this year’s Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli craft and crew seem strong contenders to emerge from the opening “challenger” stages as winners of the right to take on New Zealand for the America’s Cup. For fashion reasons as much as sailing ones let’s hope they do it—because such a famous victory would surely herald another Linea Rossa runway moment.

15 of the best boats to look out for at this year’s Boat Shows

As summer draws to a close we pick some of the most interesting boats set to be launched during this year's boat show season

The northern hemisphere summer is drawing to a close and for sailors this means that boat show season is upon us. With dozens of world premieres among the line-up at Cannes, Genoa and Southampton Boat Shows, here’s our pick of the most interesting new yachts on display in 2024.

Best boats in 2024’s Boat Shows

At Cannes Yachting Festival

In a departure from Ice’s long-standing relationship with Felci design, this stunning Italian offering, with crisp and minimalistic styling, is the result of a collaboration between Micheletti & Partners, who were responsible for interior and exterior styling, and Farr Yacht Design. Construction is of infused hybrid carbon sandwich for the hull and full carbon for the deck. Spars are also of carbon, with EC6 carbon standing rigging.

The deck layout, including a pair of electric winches ahead of each helm station, is designed to enable the boat to be handled by a single watch keeper.

Yet this is a beautifully spacious yacht with three or four cabin layouts that offer plenty of privacy, plus generous saloon and galley areas. Ice founder Marco Malgara is particularly excited about this one and you can expect a delicious helming experience.

Wauquiez 55

The first new launch from this renowned French yard for six years is a centre cockpit yacht aimed at the premium end of the market and packed with excellent ideas. Below decks the boat has a number of surprises, including the owner’s aft cabin with extensive windows onto the bathing platform and its own aft entrance. This creates a space with an entirely different feel to that of any other production yacht of a similar size.

The Lombard-designed hull shape aims to maximise stability, while the reverse sheer is an intrinsically stiff shape that improves performance and comfort by reducing weight in the ends of the boat. Options include three rigs, two keels, and two interior layouts.

Contest 63CS

This family owned Dutch yard has produced some of the very best semi-custom large cruising yachts, with sparkling sailing performance and a very high build quality. The latest model is a powerful and spacious centre cockpit sloop with sleek lines by naval architects Judel/Vrolijk, plus interior styling by superyacht stars Wetzels Brown Partners.

It’s intended as a boat that can be sailed by family and friends, but also has an option to accommodate crew if necessary. Sail handling systems are set up for simplicity and ease of handling, with a choice of in-boom or in-mast mainsail reefing and the option of a self-tacking inner jib. All lines are led aft and can be controlled from the pedestals immediately forward of the helm stations. Below decks a large number of variations are possible, including a four-cabin family layout, or three cabins plus crew quarters.

At Genoa Boat show

The latest in this range of sleek performance cruisers looks like the ideal way for the Aquileia yard to celebrate its 50th anniversary.

It’s another Javier Soto Acebal design with twin rudders and a hydrodynamically efficient hull shape, with a chine forward and lots of flare above the waterline aft. We featured it in more detail in our May issue noting that the key differences over the seven-year-old 55 are the longitudinal tender garage and ability to offer three heads with separate shower compartments.

Adi Design was responsible for the interior that has provision for an optional en suite crew cabin. Extensive glazing at the aft end of the coachroof helps to flood the aft cabins with natural light and improve ventilation in these areas.

Two performance Grand Soleils

At Cannes Yachting Festival At Genoa Boat show

The Grand Soleil 52 Performance is the latest collaboration between naval architect Matteo Polli and Nauta Design, who were responsible for exterior styling, interiors and layouts. The result is an elegant and stunning yacht with a high stability, high performance hull shape.

The yard says it’s ‘intended for competent, passionate and very demanding owners who do not want to compromise on performance and comfort’. As with other models in the range it’s available in both Performance and Race versions, with the former optimised for sporty, yet comfortable, cruising.

The Grand Soleil 65 Performance follows in the wake of the Long Cruise version – which was our cover model and for which we did a full review last month – based on the same hull, but with a streamlined deckhouse and sportier styling. The concept was curated and finessed by Italian racer Franco Corazza, who has a dozen national championship wins, plus European and world titles.

Performance targets match those of the earlier Grand Soleil 72, with the mast positioned well aft to maximise the size of the foretriangle and therefore also reaching and downwind sails. This helps to create a sail plan with a relatively low centre of effort that reduces heel angles.

The yard has made further steps toward sustainability, including the use where appropriate of linen fibres, bio resins and water-based paints.

Hanse 360 and 590

At Cannes Yachting Festival At Southampton Boat Show At Genoa Boat show

These two models fill out Hanse’s acclaimed new Berret-Racoupeau-designed range that launched with the Hanse 460 in 2021. All five models to date feature very spacious accommodation, combined with surprisingly quick and civilised sailing performance.

Like her larger stablemates the 360 offers accommodation volumes that are not normally associated with a yacht of this size, including a large forward owner’s cabin with a peninsula bed. In all 12 layout options are offered in two or three cabin formats with either one or two heads.

The deck layout is ergonomic under sail, yet the cockpit is also designed for outdoor living, with a large table, big fold-down platform aft and an optional barbecue for cooking outside.

The 590 is the yard’s new flagship and a replacement for the long running and successful 588, with a lot more volume, giving room for a very spacious owners cabin. Hanse says the optional hard top is the largest in its class and there’s a large 3.1m dinghy garage with electric launching system.

Lagoon 43 and 60

Lagoon celebrates 40 years in business this year, over which time it has built over 7,000 yachts. The Lagoon 43 is a replacement for one of the most important models in the range, the Lagoon 42, which has sold more than 1,000 units and is claimed to be the most popular cruising catamaran ever produced. No pressure then!

It’s a semi flybridge model with a forward cockpit and is available in three cabin/three heads and four cabin/four head layouts. All the cabins are larger than those of the earlier boat, with bigger beds, while the saloon and cockpit areas can be configured for dining for up to 12 people. Other new features include doors in the topsides aft to allow easy access to the cockpit from a pontoon.

The full flybridge Lagoon 60 offers palatial accommodation on a near superyacht scale. It’s available in four cabin/galley below and five cabin/galley up arrangements, plus optional crew cabins forward in each hull. As reported in April, the aft cockpit can be fully opened out onto the water, including hull sides that hinge down, creating an area even wider than the yacht’s 32ft beam allows.

It is offered with Lagoon’s innovative new furling boom system, a project the company has worked on for many years to help ease sail handling.

Rapido 53XS

This Morrelli & Melvin design is a long-awaited development of the Rapido 50 ultra-fast cruising trimaran. It retains the original shape below the waterline, while additional topsides flare and a much wider coachroof create significant additional accommodation in a three-cabin layout.

At the same time, the central daggerboard of the original design is replaced by C-foils in each ama. This improves visibility from the saloon, as well as contributing to more internal space.

Despite the extra accommodation volume and complexity, displacement is only 800kg more than the Rapido 50, so performance is not compromised. The owner of the first boat to be launched, for example, expects to complete Atlantic crossings in less than 10 days.

Xquisite Sixty Solar Sail

At Annapolis Boat Show

This X60, the first of three new and very modern catamaran models launching this year from Xquisite Yachts, splashed in Cape Town earlier this summer and is due to debut at the Annapolis Boat Show in October.

It features a phenomenal 44kW lithium ion battery bank, 6kW of solar panels and 10kW of inverters for extended periods of silent running, including the ability to power many domestic style luxuries. It’s designed to be managed solo from a single helm position and features a carbon boom with furling main and retractable bimini.

The power cat version is coming to Europe this autumn and CEO Tamas Hamor says it is fitted with the most advanced hybrid propulsion system currently available on the market, which makes it capable of reaching 24 knots or providing transoceanic range at 8 knots.

At Hiswa in Water Show

This will be the first year exhibiting at Cannes for the recently formed Dutch brand Vaan, which builds contemporary cruising catamarans from circular materials, including hulls from recylced aluminium. The new 49ft R5 model won’t quite be ready in time to get to the Med – however it will be at the HISWA show and we hope to seatrial it this autumn.

The second model of the smaller R4, which is finished in bare aluminium, will instead be presented in Cannes, before it heads over to America.

This very lightweight all carbon multihull was designed from the outset as a fast cruising catamaran for world cruising with a family. This approach freed designers VPLP from many of the considerations that are necessary for the dual purpose boats that are popular in this part of the market and combine cruising with competitive racing with a large crew on board. The result is a stunningly simple, but very spacious and comfortable, high-end yacht that can be sailed by a lone watch keeper, yet can hit speeds of 25 knots when cruising. Seawind 1170 & 1370

We have featured both of these performance cruising catamarans in detail over the last couple of years in these pages and were hoping they’d be at Cannes last year, but have yet to see them in person. Hopefully this autumn will provide the chance as they are both due to be making their European debuts at Cannes. The Australian firm, which builds in Vietnam, now has a new site in Turkey. Both boats look like really smart, feature-rich designs that offer comparatively speedy passagemaking for their size and plenty of practical thinking. This French brand has always pushed the boundaries of both internal and external space available on cruising multihulls. As a result the concept, which was first unveiled only 10 years ago, has been much emulated by other brands. The new 5.8, a full flybridge, is the largest yet and a new flagship for the range, with tangibly more volume and deck area than the older Bali 5.4.

1 of 2 missing victims of Labor Day boat crash found dead in Connecticut

Authorities have found the body of one of two men who remained missing four days after a boat carrying nine people crashed into a jetty along the Connecticut shoreline

OLD LYME, Conn. -- Authorities on Friday found the body of one of two men who remained missing four days after a boat carrying nine people crashed into a jetty along the Connecticut shoreline.

State environmental conservation police officers located the body in the mouth of the Connecticut River between Old Saybrook and Old Lyme shortly after noon, about a quarter-mile (four-tenths of a kilometer) from the site of the accident, Police Capt. Keith Williams said.

The man's name was being withheld pending notification to his family, Williams said.

The crash killed another man, Christopher Hallahan, 34, of Westbrook. Connecticut, and injured six other people who were taken to a hospital. Authorities continued searching Friday afternoon for the second missing man and planned to return Saturday if they don't find him.

Authorities responded to the accident shortly after 9 p.m. on Monday and found the 31-foot (9-meter) motorboat half submerged and significantly damaged near an Old Saybrook marina where the river flows into Long Island Sound. Police said the boat struck a jetty at the mouth of the river. The cause of the crash is being investigated.

The passengers were returning from a day trip to Block Island, Rhode Island, and it appeared none of them were wearing a life jacket, police said.

The days-long search has involved divers, drones, aircraft, sonar and remote-operated underwater vehicles with cameras, Williams said.

The accident happened near where another boat crashed on Labor Day 2023, sending four people to a hospital. Environmental conservation police pushed back at the suggestion that the spot is particularly hazardous.

Sunken Yacht's Crew Reveals What They Say Happened Before Tragedy: 'Thrown Into the Water' and 'Walking on the Walls'

The captain and a sailor and engineer have spoken with investigators, according to Italian news media

The captain and two crew members now under investigation in connection with the sinking of the yacht  Bayesian  off the coast of Sicily last month are reportedly sharing some of what they say happened as the tragedy unfolded, ultimately killing seven aboard .

According to multiple Italian news outlets, sailor Matthew Griffiths, who was on watch duty at the time, and Tim Parker Eaton, the ship’s engineer, as well as captain James Cutfield have each spoken with investigators about what led up to the  Bayesian  going into the water.

The Italian coast guard previously said the vessel sank around 5 a.m. local time on Aug. 19 after a "violent storm" while near Porticello in northern Sicily.

Twelve passengers and 10 crew were aboard: Six of the passengers — including British tech businessman Mike Lynch and his daughter Hannah as well as two couples — were killed along with the yacht’s chef, Recaldo Thomas.

Griffiths, speaking with investigators, said that “I woke up the captain when the wind was at 20 knots [23 mph]. He gave the order to wake everyone else up,” according to the  La Stampa  newspaper.

“Then I put away the cushions and plants,” Griffiths is quoted as saying. “I closed the glass windows of the lounge at the bow as well as the hatches.”

Prosecutor Raffaele Cammarano has previously referred in a press conference to a "sudden and unexpected event" of weather before the sinking and said the yacht had been "hit by a downburst."

Italian TV network RAI quoted Griffiths as telling investigators that the yacht’s crew all went into the sea because of the weather but “managed to climb back on board.”

"The ship tilted and we were thrown into the water. Then we … tried to save those we could,” he said, per  La Stampa .

“The boat was tilted and we were walking on the walls,” he said. Similar comments were also reported by ANSA , an Italian news agency.

Cutfield likewise said the  Bayesian  listed 45 degrees and then fell sharply to the right, according to what he told investigators as quoted by the  Corriere della Sera  newspaper.

According to RAI, citing what Griffiths told authorities, some of the crew created a kind of human chain to reach the passenger area from the  Bayesian ’s bridge in order to get some people off the yacht.

Eaton, the engineer, told investigators that the  Bayesian ’s hatches were closed when the weather hit, except for an entry to the engine, as quoted by  Corriere della Sera .

It remains unclear how and why the superyacht succumbed to the weather in what some witnesses have said was mere minutes. 

The  Bayesian ’s captain and Parker Eaton and Griffiths have reportedly all been placed under investigation for potential multiple manslaughter and negligent shipwreck charges — but that is not the same as being charged with a crime and none of the men have been formally accused of wrongdoing.

They have not commented publicly.

Borner, captain of the  Sir Robert Baden Powell , whose boat was nearby at the time, previously told PEOPLE that he noticed the weather deteriorated very rapidly around 3 a.m. local time on Aug. 19. 

“The weather turned very quickly and reached us even more quickly,” he said. “And the  Bayesian  was there at the time. It was anchored like us. We kept an eye on it. We had turned the engine on to maintain our position in case the anchor didn’t hold and were carefully watching it to keep at a distance from it as well. We were the only two ships out in the bay.”

Borner and a passenger saw a red flare and then a white one. It prompted Borner and his first mate to board a tender, and they headed in the direction where the  Bayesian  had been. 

“We first found things floating in the water like cushions and chairs and stuff,” Borner said. “And then we saw a flickering light. This was a life raft with a light on the top. And they also waved at us with a torch.”

“So we went there,” he added, “and then we found the crew and part of the passengers — 15 people in a 12-person raft, including a little baby .”

Hewlett Packard Enterprise said Monday that it wouldn't drop its lawsuit against the late tech tycoon Mike Lynch 's estate.

The news came two weeks after Lynch died in a tragic yacht sinking off the coast of Sicily. Lynch, along with seven others, including his daughter and his top attorney , drowned when his superyacht, Bayesian, sank.

Before his death, Lynch had been embroiled in a long legal battle with the company. Hewlett-Packard bought his software company, Autonomy, in 2011 and later accused Lynch of valuing it inaccurately. Hewlett-Packard broke into two companies — Hewlett Packard Enterprise and HP — in 2015.

An HPE spokesperson said Monday that the company would continue to pursue the lawsuit, which seeks $4 billion in damages.

Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, who survived the yacht tragedy, is expected to inherit her husband's fight, Fortune reported .

"In 2022, an English High Court judge ruled that HPE had substantially succeeded in its civil fraud claims against Dr Lynch and Mr Hussain," the spokesperson said Monday in a statement to The Associated Press .

"A damages hearing was held in February 2024 and the judge's decision regarding damages due to HPE will arrive in due course," they added. "It is HPE's intention to follow the proceedings through to their conclusion."

The Monday statement came after the group initially sent a statement to several media outlets declining to comment on legal matters in light of the tragedy.

"We do not think it appropriate to comment on legal matters in these tragic circumstances," a spokesperson previously said, per Fortune . "We're saddened by this tragic event and our thoughts are with the families and friends of all the victims."

The yacht sank just weeks after Lynch and Stephen Chamberlain, his former vice president of finance, were acquitted by a San Francisco jury in June of all criminal charges related to Autonomy's sale.

The indictment accused Lynch and Chamberlain of falsifying financial documents, lying to auditors and regulators, and suppressing people who criticized Autonomy's financial practices.

A representative of HPE did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider sent outside regular business hours.

Correction: September 3, 2024 — An earlier version of this story misstated when Lynch and Chamberlain were acquitted of criminal charges. They were acquitted weeks before the yacht sank, not weeks after. An earlier version also misstated the timeline of the lawsuit. It has been in process for nine years, not 13. The story has also been updated to clarify that Hewlett Packard Enterprise is pursuing the lawsuit against Lynch's estate. HPE broke off from Hewlett-Packard in 2015.

You can enjoy ­many practical angling upgrades without maxing out your credit cards or dipping into your 401(k). Here are 10 budget-friendly upgrades that can help you catch more fish. 

Stayput Anchor Pole

The gold standards for shallow-­water anchoring are systems like the Power-Pole Blade and Minn Kota Talon. You press a button on the console or a wireless remote, and twin poles ­electronically plunge downward to quickly and ­stealthily hold a boat in place. Rossinavi to premiere 43m Seawolf X at Monaco Yacht Show 2024

Rossinavi has announced that it will be premiering its "most innovative project" to date, Seawolf X , at this year's Monaco Yacht Show . The 42.8-metre hybrid-electric catamaran was delivered in August 2024 and is now cruising the Saronic Islands in Greece, according to BOATPro .

Exterior design is by Fulvio De Simoni Yacht Design , marking the first project presented by the pair since the 49.1-metre Aurora in 2017. It also marks Rossinavi's first multihull project.

A key characteristic of the model is her three "performance scenarios". On one-day trips, Seawolf X can cruise in full-electric mode for 100 per cent of the time; on multi-day trips, she can cruise for 90 per cent; and on transatlantic trips, she can still cruise in electric mode for 80 per cent of the time. When the catamaran is moored, a "hibernation mode" activates for reduced consumption – with the energy generated able to be given back to the quay or to a private property. She can recharge at the shore in five hours and supplies enough energy to charge up an entire villa.

Rossinavi has also developed an onboard artificial intelligence system, called Rossinavi AI, to analyse the operation of the vessel, predict the needs of guests and communicate with the crew on "lower-impact behaviours" and "conscious cruising". The AI can also monitor the battery pack to keep it in a range of 20 to 80 per cent.

Her exterior is low-profiled and reminiscent of a sports car, with Fulvio De Simoni Yacht Design seeking "to liberate their minds from preconceptions" around catamaran design. The team also integrated solar panels into Seawolf X and addressed hull efficiency by developing "lightweight solutions", including an anchor installation that meets weight standards while enhancing aesthetics.

New York-based design firm Meyer Davis have created an interior that "complements the cutting-edge yacht to bring relaxed luxury and sustainable design to its forefront," the shipyard said. The decor takes inspiration from nature, in particular the sun, the sea and sand.

Leisure highlights include a convivial cockpit centred around a pool, an expansive sundeck with sunbathing and living spaces, and a bow area that features a hidden pool and convertible home theatre. Accommodation is for up to 10 guests in four cabins located in the hulls.

"After years of study and construction, it is now a source of satisfaction and pride for us to witness the launch of project Sea Cat, now Seawolf X , the first hybrid-electric multihull vessel," said Federico Rossi, COO of Rossinavi at the time. "This yacht showcases remarkable technological innovations in both power management and propulsion technologies, marking the beginning of a new chapter in next-generation vessels." 

Seawolf X also carries the BlUE label, the shipyard' "sustainable" design philosophy established in 2022. Inspired by phytoplankton, the BlUE fleet absorbs sunlight during the day and utilises photovoltaic technology to convert it into energy. This energy is stored in advanced batteries and released at night, creating a bioluminescent effect "akin to glowing plankton".

Seawolf X is available for charter with Cecil Wright from €380,000 per week.
