Welcome to Lefkas Marina, where your unforgettable sailing holiday will begin! Led by our base manager, Andreas and supported by a dedicated team including Vangelis , Konstantina , Zeta and Angelos , we strive to make every moment of your time in Greece exceptional. Together, our goal is to deliver an unforgettable sailing adventure, with a focus on exceptional service, support, and a carefree experience you'll treasure forever .

Sailing Itineraries from Lefkas

From our base in Lefkas one week charters typically head south towards Kefalonia and Zakynthos or north towards Corfu including mainland harbours like Syvota and Parga. Two week charters give time to cover more area or simply spend more time exploring the spots you are visiting. Below we present a sample one week itinerary of our favourite southern route.

The Southern Ionian Islands

Known for relatively mild winds during the summer, the Ionian Sea is a sailing playground ideal for smooth sailing and family vacation, featuring endless swimming and idyllic nights in isolated bays of unique beauty . Lefkas island itself is full of tranquil coves and bays which one could spend many day exploring!

To the south of Lefkas lies the island of Kefalonia, and a little further Zakynthos. Both are large, well-known touristic islands with a ton of fun things to do , beautiful places to visit, turquoise waters to dive in, and historic sites to visit . On the way from Lefkas to Kefalonia there are many smaller islands well worth a visit, including the amazing Ithaki and the smaller islands of Kalamos and Kastos of the mainland coast.

The Northern Ionian Islands

To the north of Lefkas lies Corfu (where we have our Corfu charter base ), the largest of the Ionian islands, and hands-down the most cosmopolitan of them all . Over the course of its long and distinguished history, Corfu, or Kerkyra, has experienced Italian, French and English rule, each leaving a very distinct imprint on the island and its inhabitants. A mixture of different civilizations and cultures blended together into an amalgam that is undoubtedly Greek in character, and yet truly unique from the rest of Greece.

Heading towards Corfu will usually take you through the mainland ports of northern Greece, including Syvota and Parga , and allowing you to explore the amazing islands of Paxoi and Antipaxoi along the way.

A One Week Sailing Itinerary from Lefkas Day 1: Lefkas to Meganissi (10-15 nautical miles, 2-3 hours sailing)

Today, we set sail from Lefkas marina, heading south through the canal that separates Lefkas island from the mainland. As we leave the canal, we see the rocky islet of Volios on our left and the castle of Agios Georgios on the mainland coast.

Consider stopping at the charming coves and beaches on the mainland coast (Aspros Gialos, Marathia, Varko beach) before continuing south. Alternatively, visit Skorpios , known for its green waters and rumored to be Jackie Kennedy's favorite island . Be aware of the thermal wind during midday hours and the Chiromytis reef near Skorpios, which requires careful navigation.

Our destination for the night is the picturesque Vathi on Meganissi island , with two docking options: the private Odyseas Marina or the small free harbor at the bottom of the bay. Depths here are suitable for various boat sizes. Enjoy traditional fish taverns, beach bars, and the natural beauty of the area. Other overnight options include Spilia , Atherinos , or Kapsali .

Day 2: Meganissi to Ithaca - Vathi (20 nautical miles, 3-4 hours sailing)

Start the day with a refreshing morning swim at Desimi Beach Bay , just 3nm west of Vathi. Next, visit the southern part of Meganisi and the famous Papanikoli Cave , named after a Greek World War II submarine. Be aware however that anchoring is not suitable in this area.

Be cautious of the thermal wind that occurs during midday hours and stronger winds near Vathi, as they arise from the central part of Ithaca island. Today's overnight destination is either Vathi , the capital of Ithaca island, or the picturesque Kioni . While Kioni offers a peaceful ambiance, beautiful beaches, and lush forest hikes, the cosmopolitan Vathi caters to those seeking more lively entertainment . Before reaching Ithaca, consider stopping at the islet of Atokos (One House Bay) for a swim.

In Vathi, there are stern or side mooring options on the southern and eastern sides of the harbor, with depths ranging from 2m to over 4m. Anchoring offshore in the bay is also possible, with depths at 10m and good holding potential, however be prepared for strong north-westerly afternoon winds. Other overnight stay options on Ithaca include Kioni , Frikes , or Pera Pigadi .

Day 3: Ithaca to Kefalonia – Agia Efimia (distances and times vary based on route)

Begin your day with a swim at one of the beaches of Gidaki , Filiatro , or Pera Pegadi if you sail southeast of Ithaca. Alternatively, sail to the northern side of the island and cross the Ithaca-Kefalonia strait to stop for a swim at Agios Nikolaos or Afales . According to legend, the Castle of Odysseus was located in Afales, and underwater findings at 15m depth now support this claim.

Be aware of the stronger thermal effect in the strait of Ithaca-Kefalonia, with wind and waves directed from north to south. Beam reach sailing is recommended for a comfortable cruise. Exercise caution near the rocky islet of Daskalio .

Tonight's overnight stay is at the harbor of Agia Efimia in the northern part of Sami Bay . The municipal port offers water and electricity for a fee. Don't miss the opportunity to visit the enchanting Melissani Lake , approximately 5km from your mooring point. If you're up for a hike, consider the 9.5km trail to the world-famous Myrtos beach .

In Agia Efimia, dock in the northern part of the harbor with sea depths over 3m or the eastern part with depths reaching 5m. Alternatively, anchor in the bay with depths at 4m but be cautious of the bathing area at the western part of the bay. Enjoy traditional taverns and cafes just a few meters from your boat.

Day 4: Skala and Agios Nikolaos (25 nautical miles, 5 hours sailing)

Today, sail to Zakynthos , the southernmost destination on your itinerary. This 25nm journey features the most spectacular landscapes and natural treasures of the Ionian Sea, including Shipwreck Bay and the Blue Caves . Along the way, visit Antisamos Beach for extreme water sports and Skala Beach at the southern coast of Kefalonia for unforgettable photo opportunities.

Be prepared for stronger winds in the southernmost part of Kefalonia and exercise caution around the Kakava shallows outside Skala. Maintain an offshore distance of about 2nm from the coast.

The tranquil harbor of Agios Nikolaos offers a pleasant overnight stay, with a mesmerizing natural landscape and modern entertainment options, including traditional taverns and cozy cafes. Before docking, visit the famous Blue Caves , just 1.5 nautical miles from the harbor, and plan for a morning visit to the Shipwreck as it's nearby.

Approach Agios Nikolaos harbor either from the northern or southern side of the rocky islet of Agios Nikolaos. Avoid the south side for anchorage as it serves fishing boats and ferries. Berth on the western side, where depths are about 2m. Ensure your anchor has enough span to secure your berth during strong ripples caused by the ferry's arrival.

Day 5: Zakynthos to Kefalonia - Poros (23 nautical miles, 4-5 hours sailing)

Start your day with a morning swim at the famous Navagio (Shipwreck) Beach , one of the most iconic beaches in the Ionian Sea. Visit early, as local daily cruises can become crowded after 10 am. Be prepared for the usual early afternoon swell, even without wind. The sea depth in the area is sufficient for safe navigation and anchorage in the middle of the bay .

Tonight's destination is Kefalonia , where you have various options in the eastern part of the island. A suggested stop is the port of Poros , located 23 nm from Shipwreck beach. Near the port, below the town's square, you'll find an organized sandy beach , traditional taverns, and bars for your entertainment.

When approaching Poros , watch out for wind spirals (gusts) from the north. Avoid berthing at the large dock, as it serves daily ferries connecting Kefalonia with Zakynthos and Kyllini. Instead, dock in the south-southwest side of the harbor, where depths are over 2m and the anchor grips well on the sandy seabed.

Day 6: Kefalonia to Lefkas - Sivota (25 nautical miles, 5 hours sailing)

Begin your return journey from Poros to Fiskardo , crossing the Ithaca-Kefalonia strait in the opposite direction (south to north). Morning hours offer the best weather conditions for sailing. Discover hidden gems for a morning swim along the way, and if you haven't already, visit Fiskardo for lunch. You can moor in Fiskardo harbor on the south and west sides, with depths over 2.5m and 3m, respectively. If all berths are occupied, stern to the rocks on the north side, where the depth is over 3m.

Sivota , a picturesque seaside village on the southern coast of Lefkas is an ideal destination for your last night. Each tavern in Sivota provides its own floating pier for free docking, water, and electricity. According to Dörpfeld's theory, Odysseus landed in Sivota on his way back to Ithaca. Mooring in Sivota requires a safe spot at one of the floating piers owned by local taverns, with assistance generously offered by the locals upon arrival. Alternatively, you can anchor in the middle of the bay where the seabed is over 4m deep.

Day 7: Back to Lefkas Marina

The last sailing day includes several popular and famous swimming spots on the western side of Lefkas island. Vassiliki Beach , in the southwestern part of the island, is known to be one of the best in the world for windsurfing. As you head further north, enjoy the waters at Porto Katsiki , Egremni , Megali Petra , and Agios Nikitas beaches, all top tourist destinations worldwide.

As you approach the town of Lefkas from the north side, you'll need to cross the floating bridge of the island. Be cautious and mindful of several important points during this process. First, ensure a safe passage outside Ammoglossa, where the size of the sandbar varies each year due to sand deposition. A green light indicates the entry point here. The floating bridge opens every hour , with priority given to incoming boats. There's a dock for side mooring while you wait for the bridge to open.

After crossing the canal, stay close to the starboard side between the green and red lights. First, on your right, you'll see the port and the town of Lefkas. Following that, Lefkas Marina appears at the end of the harbor and you have returned back to base .

Guide to Lefkada

A magical place packed with exotic natural landscapes

Located in the heart of the Ionian sea, on the western side of  Greece mainland lies Lefkada, an island so famously known for its crystalline turquoise waters, scenic beaches and picturesque towns. It is one of the most popular Ionian destinations thanks to its magnificent scenery, impressive monasteries, gorgeous seafront and mountainous villages that ooze a unique charm.

Boasting lush green landscapes that are distinctly beautiful all year round, Lefkada is home to numerous delightful destinations waiting to be explored. Onboard your luxury superyacht charter you will witness the panoramic views of the endless horizon and if you head further ashore, you can enjoy the traditional villages and some of the island's most remarkable mountains that are simply breathtaking. Take a visit to Dimosari Waterfalls of Nidri, with its ice cold waters, the falls offer a refreshing oasis during the hot summer afternoons. An easy trek takes you through a beautiful walk beside the towering rocks till you reach the mesmerising falls, which flow down to a cold pool which is sure to test your tolerance for the cold.

If it’s relaxation you’re searching for, there are many idyllic beaches that offer a sense of peaceful tranquillity. With the option to visit long, soft, sandy beaches or warm, pebbled coves of beauty, there are plenty of places to anchor down and enjoy the crystalline Mediterranean waters. Cruise to the south of the island and feast your eyes on the exotic bay of Porto Katsiki, with its impressive white cliffs and incredible blue water, it is a true treasure on the island. If you prefer a quieter beach, head to Egremni, a world-renowned bay that can only be accessed by boat and as the longest beach in Lefkada, finding a quiet spot to enjoy your privacy will not be an issue here.

If there was a time to test your adrenaline then Lefkada is the place to do so. Many sport enthusiasts thrive here with the endless amounts of opportunities for kitesurfing, windsurfing and paragliding. See the island from a totally different perspective high up in the sky as you edge off a slope into the clouds and fly to the wonderful west coast. On the water, there are ample opportunities to snorkel, swim and explore the enticing caves around the area as well as trying your hand at all the other popular watersports on the island.

A visit to Lefkada town itself provides a perfect opportunity for shopping at quaint traditional shops, and scouting out all the local products from fine liquor to succulent honey, which are both unique to the island. Take a stroll through the Venetian-themed centre and enjoy a delectable meal in the romantic square. If you’re looking for a place to enjoy late night cocktails you will find plenty of trendy and chic bars in the town centre but if you’re wanting a totally authentic and original experience you must visit the luxurious sky bar, Fly Me. High above the clouds, this alfresco cocktail bar and restaurant allows you to relax and enjoy the evening sunset in style.

Lefkada is an island that has preserved the traditions of the old Mediterranean, because its laws do not allow the construction of tall buildings. Chartering a Boat

Best time to visit.

When should you set sail to this mesmerising island? Enjoy a Mediterranean climate and the sun? Here, the summer months consist of warm, dry weather. In contrast, winter months tend to be cooler and rainy. A yacht charter in Lefkada would be ideal during June and September. These months you will be able to soak up the glorious sun while avoiding the crowds that come into town during the peak season (July – August). For those looking to rent a boat in Lefkada during these peak months, it is recommended to book in advance to avoid high costs and have the best options available.

Sailing Conditions in Lefkas

The sailing conditions in the Lefkada area are generally good, with the summer months being the most popular time for sailing.

The prevailing winds in Lefkada are the "maistros" (northwest) and the "garmpo" (southwest), which typically blow at a force of 4-5 on the Beaufort scale, providing perfect sailing conditions. In the mornings, the winds tend to be lighter, while in the afternoons, they pick up, which makes it ideal for beginners to practice in the calmer waters, while more experienced sailors can enjoy the stronger winds in the afternoons.

The sea conditions in the Lefkada area are also generally calm, with the water temperature ranging from 22°C to 26°C during the summer months. The sea is usually the calmest in the morning, but it can get choppy in the afternoon when the wind picks up.

Overall, the sailing conditions in Lefkada are favourable for sailors of all levels, and the island's numerous bays and coves provide plenty of options for anchoring and exploring.

How to spend a day in Lefkas

Begin your voyage in the island's capital: Lefkada Town. A sophisticated city filled with much history, memorising landscape, and family-run businesses. The marina is only a few minutes walk to the town centre of Lefkas! Wander the cobblestone streets with colourful houses that shine brightly in the sun. As you enter the island, one of the first and most important sights you will see is the Castle of Agia Mavra. Built in the 14th century, this fortification was built to protect the island from invaders and enemies. Although only ruins remain, this site is a must-see on your catamaran charter itinerary to better understand and appreciate the history of Greece.

Islands to visit near Lefkada

Sailing bareboat or with a skipper and crew.

Sailing with or without a skipper is a personal preference and depends on several factors, such as experience, comfort level, and budget. Suppose you are an experienced sailor with a good understanding of navigation. In that case, yacht charters without a skipper (also called bareboat) can be a rewarding adventure, providing more freedom and flexibility to explore the destination at your own pace. However, if you are a beginner or prefer a more relaxed sailing holiday, sailing with a skipper might be ideal for you. A skipper is like the captain of the boat, and they can provide guidance, share their local knowledge, and ensure the safety of the guests and the yacht.

There is also an option to have a hostess or a cook on board GlobeSailor yachts. A hostess is responsible for making two daily meals (usually breakfast and lunch) and will take care of the boat's upkeep (tidying common areas etc.). A cook is responsible for making all three meals on board the boat. Both crewed options allow clients to eat Greek-inspired dishes aboard a beautiful boat. Some guests prefer the hostess option as it allows them to sail to a different marina each night and find the best authentic restaurants in Lefkada.

The price of your yacht charter will vary depending on whether you choose a bareboat, skipper or fully crewed option. Each variable offers guests a unique holiday experience. For guests who don't want to sail bareboat, please note the price of a skipper or crew changes depending on the individual boat charter and rental agreement.

Choosing the perfect boat to rent

Regarding yacht rental, the options can seem overwhelming! At GlobeSailor, we have boats of all shapes and sizes for you to rent. Our rentals range in length, berths, cabins, boat model, when they were built, add-ons such as a dinghy or water sports equipment, and of course, price.

Your choice of berths and cabins will vary depending on the sailboat, motor boat or catamaran you choose. Usually, cabins will be single or doubles, meaning they can accommodate one or two people. There are also double cabins for individual use available on some boat rentals, which is a cabin option for one guest who wishes to have more space aboard the yacht.

We offer guests a choice between a sailboat, catamaran, power boat, luxury yacht, gulet or even houseboat! The choices for charters are endless!

Most guests choose either a sailboat or a catamaran to rent. Both boats have unique characteristics to satisfy the varying needs of clients.

A monohull or a sailboat is a traditional boat with one hull (mono!). It is focused on performance and offers sailors the traditional sailing experience. Many sailors like the traditional feel of a monohull. A monohull might be best for you if you fancy yourself a true captain of the seas! Popular boat models such as a Bavaria Cruiser and an Oceanis are available to rent on our website

Catamarans have more than one hull. The multihull of a catamaran offers its guests more stability as the boat is equipped to rock less against the ocean waves. A catamaran is also more spacious than a monohull. Catamarans usually range from 30 feet to 60 feet, with the average length being around 45 feet. Catamarans have less heeling (tilting) than monohulls, providing passengers with a more comfortable and stable ride. Catamarans also have a shallower draft, which means they can sail in waters with a low tide and get closer to shore. Popular catamaran models such as a Lagoon and Odyssey are available to rent on our website

Getting There

Connected to the mainland of Greece by a small narrow bridge, it is one of the few islands reachable by car as it is Fly into Aktion National Airport, near the mainland town of Preveza, which accommodates low-cost flights from European cities. (Note: this airport only operates during the summer months!) From here, your yacht charter in Lefkada is only a 30-minute drive by car or bus. For those travelling from the capital city of Athens, shuttles run daily both ways (the journey takes 6-7 hours).

A sailing holiday in Lefkada offers a unique and unforgettable experience that is unlike any other. With its stunning natural beauty, charming villages, and clear blue waters, Lefkada provides the perfect setting for an adventure on the high seas. Whether you're looking to relax and soak up the sun or you're seeking an exhilarating sailing experience, Lefkada has something to offer everyone. So why not set sail for this magical Greek island and create memories that will last a lifetime? A sailing holiday in Lefkada is a truly special experience that you won't want to miss.

Weather Forecast for Lefkas Port

Lefkas sailing holidays: popular questions answered., how much is it to charter a yacht in lefkas.

The cost of your yacht charter will depend on the type, age and size of the boat you choose, as well as the dates of your holiday. If you are in the market for a good deal, we would recommend looking at the beginning or end of the season (April, May and until mid- June & from mid – September onwards). Prices are highest during peak season from mid-June until mid- September. To calculate the total cost of your holiday, you will need to consider the obligatory extras too (i.e. end cleaning) which are payable on top of the boat price (usually on spot). Provisioning, mooring fees and fuel are not included. For more details and a tailored list of options for your Lefkas sailing holiday, please contact our experienced team of yacht charter consultants at [email protected]

Is Lefkas good for sailing?

Lefkas and the South Ionian islands are considered one of the top sailing destinations in the Mediterranean and are ideal for first time sailors, families and those looking for a laid back holiday. This region is known for easy line of sight navigation, short distances between the islands and generally very predictable and mild weather and wind conditions.

What is the best month to sail in Lefkas?

The south Ionian is lovely throughout the season, however, if you prefer to avoid the crowds and enjoy better charter rates too, we would recommend booking outside of the peak season. According to our yacht charter consultants, June and September are perfect for a sailing holiday in Lefkas as the weather is warm and sunny and the islands are in full “summer mode”.

What qualifications do you need to sail in Lefkas, Greece?

To charter bareboat from Lefkas you will need one person (the skipper) with a sailing license and a co-skipper with sailing experience. It is always wise to email a copy of your sailing license to your charter consultant in advance so they can double check that it is acceptable by the Greek authorities.

Is the sea in Lefkas warm?

You can expect warm sea temperatures when sailing from Lefkas as the water remains warm and pleasant even during spring and autumn. The average sea temperature in Lefkas is about 20 °C.

What sea is Lefkas in?

Lefkas or Lefkada is part of the Ionian islands located in the Ionian Sea in the west of Greece.

How long should a Lefkas sailing holiday be?

Sailing holidays in the South Ionian are offered on a weekly Saturday to Saturday basis; the minimum charter duration is 7 days. There are some exceptions during low season, however, you will need to discuss short term charter opportunities with our charter consultants as these are not customary.

Why visit Lefkas?

Lefkas is one of the most visited and highly rated Greek destinations and for good reason. You can expect charming villages, a fantastic experience exploring the vibrant and colorful Lefkas town, local delicacies and tasteful wines, turquoise waters and emerald bays. Another highlight is that you can also access this island by car, as it is connected to the mainland.

Which is the closest island to Lefkas?

The closest island to Lefkas is Meganisi, a small yet charming place, with a total size of 22 km² boasting over 30 km of coastline. Thanks to its proximity to Lefkas, it is an ideal first overnight stop for those wanting to leave Lefkas right after embarkation. Important to note that it does get a little crowded in the summer and we would recommend booking berths in advance.

How long does it take to sail from Lefkas to Corfu?

The distance between Lefkas and Corfu is about 70 NM and it will take you approximately 10 hours of non stop sailing to cover this leg, depending on the size of boat you have.

If you are interested in the beginning or end of the season, you may want to check with our experienced charter consultants about one way charter opportunities as sometimes yachts need to be relocated between bases.

Sailing Holidays in Lefkas

Lefkada, or Lefkas (in Greek: Λευκάδα), is a Greek island in the Ionian Sea, on the west coast of Greece, which connects with the mainland by a long causeway and floating bridge. The city of Lefkada, is situated in the northern part of the island, approximately 20 minutes, by automobile, away from Aktion National Airport. The Prefecture of Lefkada comprises Lefkada island, plus, the smaller nearby islands of Meganisi, Kalamos, Kastos, Madouri and Skorpios are of unparalleled beauty. It is the smallest prefecture of Greece in both land area and population (2001 census).

We suggest multiple alternatives regarding sailing around Lefkas island, and our yachts are definitely the best ones to “sail you around”, and guarantee unforgettable summer sailing holidays.

Lefkas (Italian: Santa Maura) is a hilly island marked by karstic action, lying off the Playia Peninsula in Acarnania, from which it is separated by a shallow lagoon varying in width between 600 m and 5 km. It is now linked with the mainland either by a causeway or a ferry. Most of the island is occupied by a range of hills, rising to a height of 1158 m in Mount Stavrotas, and running south-west to end at Cape Doukato. It was from this Leucadian Rock of gleaming white limestone, that Sappho was supposed to have thrown herself for love of the handsome Phaon. Lefkas never had any permanent natural connection with the mainland. The shingle spit at the northern tip was pierced in ancient times by the Corinthians to provide a channel for shipping, much like the spit to the south of Lefkas town, which came into being in the Middle Ages, as a result of the establishment of salt-pans. (Find Lefkas in Google Maps here )

Off the south-east coast of Lefkas, you will find the beautiful unspoilt island of Meganisi, with sandy beaches and famous sea-caves. It is ideal for yacht charters with family or friends, either bareboat or skippered. Westward to Lefkas, there are tiny islands like Skorpios and Madouri, and on the east side the well-equipped marinas of Vasiliki and Nydri provide safe anchorage protected from the occasional strong westerlies.

The must-see ports and anchorages include: Palairos, Mytika, Kastos, Port Leone, Episkopi, Papanikolis Cave, Vathi, Spartakhori, Menidion (Ambracian Gulf), Sivota, Vasiliki and Rouda Bay.

History of Lefkas

The earliest evidence of human settlement on the island dates back to the Neolithic period. In the 7th century BC, the town of Lefkas was founded by settlers from Corinth, who closed off the south end of the lagoon, opposite the St George Fort, by a 600 m long mole, remains of which are still visible under water (the sunken breakwater). They also cut a channel through the spit of shingle at the north end of the lagoon, opposite the Santa Maura Fort.

In the Middle Ages the island belonged to the barons of Kefallinia and Zakynthos. In 1479 it was taken by the Turks – the only Ionian Island to fall into their hands – but was recovered for the Venetians by Morosini in 1684.

As a result of the vicissitudes of its history and a series of earthquakes (the most recent in 1953) Lefkas has preserved very few old buildings.

Ports and Local Amenities in Lefkada

Preveza, Nidri and Lefkas port are the most important bases for bareboat yacht charters in the southern Ionian, as is Corfu and Gouvia in the north Ionian. The Lefkas canal enables sailors to sail, or moor, near the coastline of the east side of the island, which has 90% of the good anchorages.

If you are sailing from the north, the entrance can be found by locating the Santa Maura Fort. If you are looking south-west, you find the Santa Maura Fort and the north entrance to the canal, and in the distance, Lefkas town. The canal proper (dotted lines) starts after Lefkas Town and is marked by red and green poles, and by red and green buoys when the canal turns south. The ancient submerged breakwater is located opposite to St. George’ s Fort.

The entrance to Sivota Bay is sometimes a bit tricky. Once in, you can only anchor at the east side just around the cape, and only if you proceed through the dogleg, you can anchor anywhere in 3-8 m.There are also quays on the south and west sides of the bay where you can find tavernas and other local amenities.

The port of Vassiliki is located in the south-east of Lefkas, deep in the large bay of Vassiliki . The west side of this bay, close to the village of Pondi, comprises a nice anchorage (anchor in 4-8 m). The actual port is located in the east side of the bay and is very shallow. You will just have to stay close to the breakwater. Natural springs which run through a washing house at the south of Vassiliki, surely favour this part of the island.

The town of Spartakhori on the island of Meganisi, can easily be seen from the north and west. Once you are in the bay, the small harbour will be right in front of you. It represents a good shelter, though you will have to anchor in considerable depths (15-25 m). With northeast winds blowing at night, the anchorage near the tavernas is the best location in the bay. The village of Spartakhori is as enchanting, as enjoyable is the beautiful winding road leading there, and is also definitely worth the climb.

Nidri village, however, is more boisterous, just like the fair but crowded inlet across. Apart from July and August this inlet is a must-anchor, and you can use the sunken coaster there to tie an extra line. Even though the Nidri quay provides water, fuel, and any other supplies you may need, it places you in the middle of yacht charter bases, tripper boats, ferries etc.

The landlocked Vlikho Bay provides a good all-round shelter to anchor in a muddy bottom of just 8-2 meters. However, anchoring off the quay of the quiet Vlikho village can be uncomfortable in stronger daytime winds.

In Lefkas Town the houses have a rather unusual structure, however they are designed carefully in order to withstand earthquakes. Go stern-to or bows-to the town quay on the northe-west or south side, the muddy bottom is generally good holding.

On Modra Island, there is the villa of the family of Aristotelis Valaoritis (1824-79), greece’s national poet, a sight worth visiting, since you can also anchor in front of the baroque building.

The Skorpios Island is also private (owned by the Onassis family), but as long you don’t cross the high water mark you can anchor on both sides of the small sandy isthmus south of the island.

Yacht Charter Lefkada

aegean yachting lefkada

Lefkada is a Greek island in the Ionian Sea on the west coast of Greece, connected to the mainland by a long causeway and floating bridge. Lefkada is the sleeper hit of the Ionians. Mountainous and remote in the centre, with gorgeous vistas and forests, the island is lined on its west coast with some of the best beaches in Greece. Holiday resorts tend to cling to the east coast where 10 satellite islets dot the sea.

Lefkada is less insular than most islands; it was once attached to the nearby mainland by a narrow isthmus until occupying Corinthians breached it with a canal in the 8th century BC. A causeway now spans the 25m strait, yet Lefkada remains steadfastly island like in the best of ways. In remote villages older women sport traditional dress and the main town, Lefkada Town, has a refreshing mid-20thcentury appeal.

The island’s bustling main town has a relaxed, happy feel. It is built on a promontory at the southeastern corner of a salty lagoon where earthquakes are a constant threat. The town was devastated by one in 1948, only to be rebuilt in a distinctively quake-proof and attractive style with the upper-storey facades of some buildings in brightly painted corrugated tin. Stroll the vibrant main pedestrian thoroughfare, Dorpfeld, and lively Plateia Agiou Spyridonos or visit the handsome churches.

Lefkada’s east coast has seen heavy tourist development over the years with the main focus at Nydri, once a gorgeously placed fishing village but now a crowded strip of tourist shops without much of a beach. Escape inland, however, to another world of scattered villages and pretty walks. From Nydri itself, you can escape seaward to the islets of Madouri, Sparti, Skorpidi and Skorpios, plus Meganisi.  Amblers enjoy the lovely walk to waterfalls 3km out of Nydri.

Vasiliki has a stony beach but is one of the best windsurfing venues in the Mediterranean. The enormous bay has soft breezes in the morning which are ideal for instructing beginners, and in the afternoon winds whip down flanking mountains for serious aficionados. The winding waterfront, with eucalyptus and canopy-covered eateries, is a pleasant place to relax.

Serious beach bums should head straight for Lefkada’s west coast where the sea lives up to every cliche: it’s an incredible turquoise and the beaches range from arcs of cliff and white stone to broad expanses of uninterrupted sand. The long stretches of Pefkoulia and Kathisma in the north are lovely , as are Megali Petra and Avali, south of Kalamitsi. Or find remote Egremni and breathtaking Porto Katsiki in the south. Explore! You’ll pass local stalls selling olive oil, honey and wine. Word is out about the picturesque town of Agios Nikitas, and people flock here to enjoy the pleasant atmosphere of this holiday village.

Morning Calm III

A 65ft Classic

A celebration of many years of boat ownership, Morning Calm was conceived and built for family cruising in comfort and style. Her composite construction allows weight to be in all the right places, especially the retracting keel which enables access to secluded anchorages. When the keel is in sailing mode, an enormous four and a half meter draught promotes a performance not usually associated with an expedition Yacht of this size. A rope free cockpit means no riveting book has to be interrupted as Morning Calm makes her way toward the next adventure, her all electric control systems allow everyone to be involved.

yacht charter in lefkada

Whilst on deck is all about short handed performance sailing, her accommodation is definitely modern classic luxury. The panoramic pilot house keeps you part of the journey in a soothing comfortable environment. Staterooms with walk around beds and generous ensuite facilities really show this boat’s origins as a place for all of the family to be comfortable whether at sea or moored for the night.

All this performance and luxury of course needs a crew to keep running smoothly, on Morning Calm, Galley, crew cabin and the machinery room are all aft of the pilot house, creating the perfect dynamic for everyday living onboard. Meals can be served either in the walnut and leather saloon or in the comfortable cockpit which lends itself to waterside dining perfection.

The powerful tender doubles both as a taxi to get ashore or an exploration vehicle to check out the places where even Morning Calm cannot reach and the garage full of water toys means that everyone has a ‘must try experience’ during periods at anchor.

Everyone Is Welcome Whether You Arrive By Air, Sea Or Land !

Please, do not hesitate to contact us for any question and we will do our best to give you an answer as soon as possible.

Recommendations when leaving your vessel.

If leaving your boat, please ensure adequate chain is out. More is better.

All seacocks, with exception to the engine inlet, should be closed.

Please ensure that the fuel to the engine is left on.

We would recommend that your bimini is left folded back and secured.

Please ensure that your Genoa has been tightly furled with none of the sail extruding.

Furling mainsails should be correctly furled. With non furling mainsails please ensure that stack packs or sail covers are secure. We would recommend that the main halyard is removed from the sail.

Removable items (e.g. Outboards) should be stowed in a safe lockable place.

Dinghy – Please ensure that your dinghy is not left in the water. It should be suitably stowed either on deck or packed away. Particular attention should be paid to floorboards and oars and how the dinghy is secured.

Leaving your fridge slightly open is recommended. From experience we recommend that canned drinks are not left in fridges over prolonged periods.

Remember to turn your gas off.

Remember to take your rubbish out.

If leaving your boat at anchor, please leave your shorelines to be used, in an obvious location in the cockpit lockers, in the event that the boat needs to be brought to the quayside.

Where to anchor:

Please do not anchor too close into the shore. It makes it difficult for vessels leaving and departing from the town quay. Remember to empty your holding tank before entering the bay. It should be noted that under Greek Law an anchor light is required.

Terms and Conditions.

Hereafter Ruairi Bradley operating under Vliho Yacht Club will be referred to as “the company.”

Gardiennage – Conditions of the vessel.

The vessel must be in good working order and left in a seaworthy condition.

Written instructions should be left onboard with relevance to the engine starting and stopping procedure, location of battery switches, windlass operation and windlass trip switch.

Any faults or special requirements with the boat should be recorded with the office in writing.

The owner shall take all necessary precautions against the outbreak of fire on his vessel. The Company reserves the right to move any vessel, gear, equipment or other goods at any time for reasons of safety and security or good management of our business and premises.

Office requirements.

The vessel must be insured and have all necessary papers to be legal in Greek waters. A copy of the boat papers should be filed with the office.

The owner must notify the office of their return date and time prior to their arrival.

Access keys to the vessel must be left with the office.

If any work is to be carried out whilst you are away. A work list must be submitted to the office either in person or via email.

The company is acting as a guardian of your vessel and the company will do their utmost to prevent any harm or damage occurring to your vessel, as long as it does not put human life in danger.

In the event of damage or theft to the vessel. It is the responsibility of the owner / insurer of the vessel.

Payments to the Company.

Long Term Contracts – Invoices and statements will be issued on a monthly basis.

Short Term Contracts – Invoices will be issued at the end of the contract. In the absence of express agreement to the contrary, our price for work shall be based on labour and materials expended and services provided. A 50% deposit is required prior to the commencement of work. Unless otherwise agreed between us, payment for all works, goods and services shall be due immediately on the invoice date. Payment shall be deemed to have been made when we receive cleared funds. In regards to outstanding invoices, the company reserves a general right (“a general lien”) to detain and hold onto the owner’s vessel or other property pending payment by the Owner of any sums due to the Company.

If the Company is exercising its’ right of detention, it shall be entitled to charge the owner at the company’s standard rate for the duration of the detention and until the vessel or property has been removed from the company.

In respect to any queries arising from the invoice, the office must be notified in writing, in order that the issue can be investigated.

In the event of a query on an invoice, payment is expected for all sections of the invoice not in question.

Prices and estimates.

We will exercise skill and judgment when we give an estimate or indication of price. However, such estimates are always subject to the accuracy of information provided by the customers or by the Company and are usually based only on a superficial examination and will not include the cost of any emergent work which may be necessary to the vessel, gear or equipment nor the cost of any extensions to the work comprised in the estimate. We will inform customers promptly of any proposed increase in estimates prices and the reasons for it and will only proceed with the work or supply with the approval of the customer. The customer shall remain responsible for the cost of labour and materials already supplied or remaining to be supplied which are not affected by the proposed increase in price.

Any time given for completion of our work is given in good faith but is not guaranteed. We shall not be responsible for any delay in completion of the work or for the consequences of any such delay unless it arises from our wilful acts or omissions or from our negligence.

While we or our subcontractors are working on the owner’s vessel or equipment the owner shall not have access to it except by prior arrangement. We will agree reasonable access when it is safe to do so and when it will not interrupt or interfere with our work schedule.

We shall not be liable for any loss or damage caused by events or circumstances beyond our reasonable control (such as severe weather conditions, the actions of third parties not employed by us or any defect in a customer’s or third party’s property): this extends to loss or damage to vessel, gear, equipment or other property left with us for work or storage, and harm to person entering our premises or using any of our facilities or equipment. We shall take reasonable and proportionate steps having regards to the nature and scale of our business to maintain security at our premises, and to maintain our facilities and equipment in reasonable working order: but in the absence of any negligence or other breach of duty by us vessels and other property are left with us at the customers own risk and customers should ensure that their own personal property insurance adequately covers such risks. Customers may themselves be liable for any loss or damage caused by them, their crew or their vessels and whilst their vessel or other property is on our premises or is being worked on by us they shall be obliged to maintain adequate insurance, including third party liability.

Sub Contracting

We may subcontract all or part of the work entrusted to us by the customer, on terms that any such subcontractor shall have the protection and benefit of all rights and conditions, and of all limitations and exclusions of liability, which exist for us under these Terms of Business. Where we exercise this right we shall remain responsible to the customer for the performance of our subcontractor.

Quality Standards

We will complete our works to the agreed specification and, in absence of any other contractual term as to quality, to a satisfactory quality. Any defects should be promptly notified to us in writing. On notification by the customer of such defects, we will investigate the cause and if we are responsible under the company will remedy them or, at our opinion, employ other contractors to do so. Any remedial work which is put in hand by the customer directly without first notifying us and allowing us a reasonable opportunity to inspect and agree such work and its costs will invalidate this guarantee in respect of those defects.

Guide To Sailing In Lefkada (Lefkas)

On a Lefkada yacht charter with Borrow a Boat you can explore much of the Ionian islands within an easy sail. Whatever you want from a Lefkas yacht charter, from its beautiful beaches and bays to relaxed atmosphere, a Lefkada sailing holiday is going to be an unforgettable experience.

Just a short drive across the bridge from mainland Greece, the Ionian island of Lefkada is one of the best sailing holiday destinations in Greek waters. Excellent holiday towns like Nidri, beautiful beaches like Agios Ioannis, and quaint fishing villages like Agios Nikitas make this an idyllic sailing destination.

High cliffs plunge into turquoise waters, and scenery that will stay in your memory for years to come blend with the friendly local culture to make for an island you'll want to visit time and again.

There is a wide choice of activities to do here too - and for those on a sailing holiday you'll be utterly spoiled for choice. Water sports ranging from scuba diving to sea kayaking and kite surfing can be done in different locations according to what you want to do for the day. Inland, you can simply go for a walk to a quiet taverna or nearby village to drink in the culture and enjoy the cuisine of this attractive island.

Whatever you want from an Ionian island sailing holiday, Lefkas should be close to the top of your list of charter bases. Book your boat rental with Borrow a Boat today!

Explore Lefkas Island By Renting A Yacht

So, on your bareboat charter or skippered yacht charter out of Lefkada, where would you like to go? On nearby mainland Greece, the historic town of Preveza has over 60km of beaches around the Ambracian Gulf, and ancient ruins dating back millennia too.

The other major Ionian islands of Kefalonia and Zakynthos are worthy of long pauses too. Cephalonia was the setting for the Hollywood movie *Captain Corelli's Mandolin* thanks to its stunning scenery and beautiful fishing villages. A famous sandy beach and a large cave system make this, the largest of the Ionian Islands, a destination you shouldn't miss on a Lefkada yacht charter.

The southernmost of the Ionian Islands Zakynthos is home to the rare turtle species Caretta-Caretta that lay their eggs on the beaches every year. The scenery is some of the best in Greece and the villages worthy of a few hours and a long lunch break in too.

As well as the larger islands, the smaller islands of the Ionian are always worth a pause too. Often away from the main tourist track, islands such as Kastos, Meganisi and Arkoudi aren't a long sail from the main island, but will give you an authentic taste of Greek island life.

A Lefkas yacht charter will give you the opportunity to explore these islands over a week or two at your own pace, enjoying the placid and great sailing conditions of the Ionian Sea as you do.

Suggested Sailing Itinerary From Lefkas

On your Lefkada yacht charter, whether bareboat or with an experienced skipper you can access hidden anchorages on smaller islands of the Ionian Sea, as well as larger ones like Kefalonia, one of the largest islands in the whole Mediterranean Sea.

7 days - Cephalonia and Lefkas Island: Your first day is just 11NM of sailing south to the island of Meganissi where you can relax for the evening before a 40NM sailing trip north to Paxos. An easy sail to the northern tip of Paxos next, mooring at the beautiful Lakka Cove. The next day is a biggie - 52NM back south to Kefalonia, mooring at Fiskada. Take time to enjoy this spot as the next sail is short, to Ithaca Town on Ithaca, just across the strait. Lefkada Town is the final port for handover.

14 days - Peloponnese and the Ionian Islands: Itself closer to the Saronic Islands, the island of Kithra is widely held as the most southerly Ionian Island. Island and coastal hopping down the northern Ionian archipelago, where the seven-day trippers will head home you continue south and get to explore mainland Greece as well as you enjoy your extended trip to all of the Ionian islands.

Best Times To Hire A Yacht In Lefkada

The sailing season runs from late April to October with July and August being the busiest months for yacht charter. Unlike the Aegean, the Ionian Sea is dominated by the Bora - the same wind that affects nearby Croatia. In summer this is far more benign and far more sailing friendly than the often beefy Meltemi. Building to a fun F5-6 in the afternoon from a zephyr in the morning, you can almost time your daily sailing by it.

The sea is cooler - often quite chilly - at the beginning of the sailing season but there is rainfall in Spring. As the days lengthen you will still see green fields and flowers in May and the winds can be quite benign too. Combined with the crowds being smaller, this suggests that May to early June are the sweet spot for an Ionian boat rental.

Come September and October the seas are still like a warm bath. With the wetter climate than the Aegean this is less of a problem so with the warm seas could be at least as good as the earlier months of the year.

Sailing Weather In Lefkada

April to mid-June: There is rainfall and the temperatures build steadily from the mid-teens to the mid 20 degree C range. There are sometimes cooler northerly winds, though the southerly Bora kicks in in around early May. There is more rainfall here than on Aegean Greece but you will soon find that a blessed relief from the heat!

Late June-August: You'll be unlucky if you see any rain, though it could be welcome in the summer heat. Temperatures are from 30s with recent hot days exceeding 40 - often hotter than the Aegean. The Bora often adds to the heat with its tropical origins.

September-October: The seas remain warm, as does the air. These months can be the best time of year for experienced sailors, as the temperatures are often in the comfortable low to mid 20s though can touch 30C from time to time.

What should I consider when hiring a Yacht or Boat?

The main points to consider are what is your budget, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat if it's not going to have a skipper, whom you are taking sailing, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip.

What are the Marinas in Lefkada?

There are three main marinas on Lefkada - with the capacity for 620 yachts, Lefkada Marina is the largest on the Ionian. Nidri Marina is mid-sized with the capacity of 222 yachts, and Sivota Marina takes around 90 vessels.

When are the best times to hire a boat in Lefkada?

To avoid the summer heat and crowds, if you can get to Lefkas Island after autumn school term begins you will find the seas still warm, the air more comfortable and the marinas less crowded.

Do you have to pay a deposit when hiring a Yacht in Lefkas Island?

You will typically pay 50% up front on booking the yacht hire and the balance on arrival. You will either pay a security deposit with your credit card on departure or can get insurance covering damage in advance. In some cases (such as the recent Covid situation) charter companies may be more flexible but this depends on the individual charter companies themselves.

What happens if my Yacht breaks down?

If you are at sea and in danger, call MAYDAY on VHF Ch16 or ring the coast guard on your phone if you have reception. If you have a mechanical fault and can make it to or are on a mooring you will be able to phone a help line number given by the boat charter company.

What should I think of before I hire a Yacht or Boat in Lefkada?

You should consider do you have the experience to handle the yacht charter or boat hire before you book and where do you want to go along with what the weather will be like. Bring warm weather and cool weather clothing if it looks like the weather can be cool as well as warm and remember at sea it can be cool on most evenings.

What Qualifications Do I need to hire a boat or yacht?

If you want to sail without a skipper then you will need relevant qualifications like RYA Day Skipper/International Certificate of Competence (ICC)/ASA 104 Bareboat certificate or the US Sailing Certificate. For small 'day boats' or if you choose to have a skippered on board your yacht charter you typically don't require licences.

Hellenic Yachts Charter

DESCRIPTION

Lefkada is a Greek island in the Ionian Sea, connected to the mainland by a causeway. West coast beaches like Porto Katsiki and Egremni feature sheer cliffs and turquoise waters. The east coast is known for its traditional villages, including the seaside resort of Nydri. In the north, Lefkada town is the island's gateway and capital. Vassiliki, in the south, attracts windsurfers. Here's a guide to some of the best, touring the island :

Where: Just south of Lefkada Town near the top of the east coast Description: a small pebble beach in an important area for Lefkada's fishermen so there are lots of great seafood tavernas nearby and excellent views of the Greek mainland

NIKIANA Where: about 10km south of Lefkada Town on the east coast Description: once a tranquil fishing village, Nikiana is now quite a developed tourist spot, though certainly not spoiled.

There are two small pebbly beaches, one just north of the harbour, one just to the south. The former is flanked on one side by trees and both have views of the Greek mainland. The tavernas, cafés and bars of the village are nearby. NIDRI Where: about halfway down the east coast Description: Nidri is one of Lefkada's liveliest resorts with some great restaurants and bars. The pebbly-sandy beach is quite popular and very well-equipped with lidos, tavernas and bars. There are also great views over the neighbouring islands of Heloni, Scorpios, Sparti and Madouri.

If you're there in September, don't be surprised to see lots of sailing boats: this is just the Ionian Regatta, one of the most important sailing competitions in this part of the Med. For those interested in a little nightlife, Nidri also has a few clubs. MIKROS GIALOS Where: a sheltered bay in the south-east, near Poros Description: quite a long stretch of shingle-pebbly beach with lidos, bars and tavernas VASILIKI Where: in a large bay at the south of Lefkada Description: one of the busier resorts on Lefkada, Vasiliki has long been popular with windsurfers and sailors. It is also home to a long pebbly beach enclosed by the green hills that so characterise much of the scenery on Lefkada. The town has lots of tavernas and bars as well as facilities for watersports enthusiasts. PORTO KATSIKI Where: at the southern tip of the west coast Description: one of the loveliest, most colourful and most scenic of the beaches in the Greek Islands. It is flanked on either side by impressive white chalk cliffs and access is via a green wooded passage. Then the white sand and the azure waters complete the palette. This beauty makes it very popular in the high season. Access: arrival at the car park is easy, but then there are about 100 steps that lead down to the beach. Again, it is possible to arrive by boat, from nearby Vasiliki or Nidri on the east coast. EGREMNI Where: a few kilometres north of Porto Katsiki in the south-west Description: a 2.5km-long expanse of white sand and pebbles, transparent waters and dramatic cliff surroundings...Sound good? Well, Egremni is another of Lefkada's A-lister beaches and well worth a visit. KATHISMA Where: about one-third of the way down the west coast (about 15km south-west of Lefkada Town) Description: another gorgeous long sandy beach offering lidos, watersports, super sunsets and nearby restaurants and bars. As with its southern cousins, it is bordered by wooded hills and cliffs that make for spectacular surroundings. MILOS Where: between Kathisma and Agios Nikitas on the west coast Description: another splendid beach in idyllic surroundings, bordered to the south by imposing granite cliffs and to the east and north by steep wooded hills. The turquoise, limpid waters are not so easy to get to, but worth the effort. AGIOS NIKITAS Where: on the northern part of the west coast Description: the village of Agios Nikitas offers seafront tavernas and good transport links (also via boat) to many of the west coast's most popular beaches. Its own beach is small, pebbly and very pretty AGIOS IOANNIS Where: on the north coast of Lefkada Description: the beach at Agios Ioannis runs up and round the thin promontory that flares of the northern coast of Lefkada. Being open to the northerly winds it has become something of a mecca for wind and kitesurfers.

The sand is soft and golden, the water dreamily azure and the old windmills that dot the area give a fascinating backdrop. Restaurants and bars are to be found nearby.

This underrated Greek Island has superstar beaches and is easy to get to from the UK

Porto Katsiki Lefkada

Also known as “Lefkas”, Lefkada is distinct in that it requires no ferry or boat journey to access it – instead, you simply drive over a causeway a short distance from Prevaza airport on the mainland. Part of the Ionian Islands, mountainous Lefkada is densely forested (providing welcome shade when it’s hot) and has some beautiful beaches that are virtually empty during the shoulder seasons. Compared to better-known Greek islands , Lefkada remains crowd-free and uncommercialised (there are no international hotel brands here yet), so keep the secret to yourself. It’s also a good jumping-off point for celebrity magnet Meganisi, where you can visit Fish Taverna Errikos for lunch.

Where to stay on Lefkada

Madreterra Villa

Madreterra Villa

Built by owners Peter and Olga as their “dream home”, Madreterra is part of The Thinking Traveller collection of sophisticated villas across Greece , Italy and France. Available to rent between early April and the end of October, Madreterra is situated on the remote western side of the island down a long windy road through olive groves (rent a small car for those hair-pin bends). Probably the most enviable place to stay on the island, the stone villa has six bedrooms (two with sea views) and seven bathrooms, meaning it can comfortably host up to 12 people. Highlights include the infinity pool (with three different depths – ideal for kids), outdoor dining area and barbecue kitchen, as well as a verdant fruit garden with lemon and apricot trees. What’s more, the beaches of Theotoko and Avali are just a ten-minute walk down the hill. The airport is a 45-minute drive away. Our villa host Giovanna was always available on WhatsApp and helped with everything from supplying travel sickness pills and transporting a baby hedgehog we found to a local vet to booking restaurants, organising boat trips and arranging a chef to cook for us – we were served a sunset feast of homemade pitta bread, tzatziki, courgette balls, stuffed vine leaves, fava bean dip, spinach pie and crème caramel. Menus cost from €25 to €35 per person plus a €200 chef fee. A cleaner also comes daily (except Fridays) to lay freshly folded towels on the loungers, wash up and make the beds.

San Nicolas Resort

A modern four-star resort on Mikros Gialos Bay, just beneath the village of Poros, San Nicolas has its own small rock beach and two pools (one for laps and one for children). A set of steps takes you to an outcrop where you can jump directly into the sea. The interior design of the hotel is a little on the bland side, but the likelihood is that for a summer vacation, guests will be in the fresh air most of the time. Dining options include a beach bar and a more formal restaurant with a cantilevered deck.

Address: Epar.Od. Lefkas - Vasilikis, Mikros Gialos 310 82

Bohemian boutique hotel

Bohemian Boutique Hotel

Ideal for a short couple’s or solo stay in the old town, the Bohemian Boutique Hotel embodies rustic-minimalist design with exposed stone walls, rattan and timber. Small and simple, rooms range from 15 to 23 square metres, and each comes with a Nespresso coffee machine, fridge, kettle and air conditioning. There is no pool or additional facilities, and breakfast is not available, but there are plenty of cafés nearby.

Address: Agias Paraskevis 10

Sappho Boutique Suites

Named after the ancient Greek poet Sappho, this eight-room contemporary hideout is a few minutes from Agiofili Beach. Well set up for families, there are two types of suites available: one accommodating two adults and one child; the other a 60 square metre space for four adults (there is an additional double sofa bed on the second floor). The former comes with private plunge pools, while the latter has terraces with dining tables facing the sea. All have kitchens for self-catering. There is also a glass-sided outdoor pool with loungers in the shallows.

Address: Agiofili Rd, Vasiliki 31082

Oikos Nostos

Oikos Nostos

Located in the south of Lefkada, just across the water from Meganisi, this ultra-modern villa has three bedrooms, three bathrooms and a stunning 20-metre-long infinity pool carved into the side of the hill. The single-level property has floor-to-ceiling windows facing the Ionian Sea, elegant sunbathing and shaded aperitivo areas, and a kitchen with a central island bar. There is even a gym on a lower floor, as well as yoga mats for sunrise sun salutations, bluetooth speakers and daily maid service. A good choice for a group of friends.

Where to eat and drink on Lefkada

Molos restaurant

Positioned on a peaceful promenade by the sea, not far from San Nicolas Resort, Molos is a friendly taverna serving freshly caught fish (red mullet, cod, seabream, dusky grouper, octopus, cuttlefish); flavoursome pasta with aubergine and artichoke; and creamy feta cheese with honey. Open for both lunch and dinner, one of my companions described the ceviche as the “best he’d ever had”. The staff are attentive and good tempered. Sit back with a cold beer and relax.

Address: Little Gialos 311 00

Rachi restaurant

Without a doubt, the most cinematic outpost to eat at on the island, Rachi is a buzzing hilltop hotspot with 180-degree views of the island and sea. On one side is a bar where you can start your evening with a sundowner (arrive in good time for sunset), and on the other is the restaurant, which also has a lively outdoor terrace. Food is refined Greek and more pricey than more everyday tavernas, but eating here is worth every euro. On the menu are the likes of stifado goat, shrimp saganaki risotto, rump steak and moussaka. The desserts are superb too. Rachi is also the place to come for paragliding (see below) – and if you’re feeling nervous, you can have a negroni before take-off.

Avali Cantine

Avali Cantine

Just a short walk from Madreterra Villa, Avali Cantine is one of those restaurants you could happily eat at morning, noon and night. In fact, it is a firm favourite among local paraglider instructors who all congregate here after their final beach landings of the day. Seating is on a covered wooden deck jutting out over the cliff edge, and there is a secret path to the beach (and outdoor showers) that guests can use. A team of kind, carefree women put together Buddha bowls, toasties, lentil salad with salami, chicken souvlaki and mojitos. Kids can help themselves to lollies and ice creams from a large chest freezer under the shade of a green parasol. You’ll need cash, though, or you’ll have to walk up the hill to do a bank transfer from your phone when it comes to paying.

Pardalo Katsiki

Pardalo Katsiki

Positioned inland, Pardalo Katsiki is found in the rural village of Karya, a place known for its needlework handicrafts and crops of lathyria beans. On the menu of this quintessential Greek taverna, clad in vines, you’ll find innovative dishes ranging from homemade sausage with peanut butter hummus to Manouri cheese with tomato gel, alongside classics such as Dakos salad with carob rusk, and slow-cooked rooster linguine. They also do triple cooked chips it truffle mayo, if that’s your vibe. Come for lunch or dinner.

Monato da Gusto

Open from 9am to 11pm daily, Monato da Gusto leans more towards fine dining, this time headed up by Millennial chef Theodore Tzavaras, who specialises in elevated Mediterranean food. Located on Kathisma beach (white sand), which is famous for its sunsets, the restaurant’s artfully presented dishes encompass fillet of freshly caught grouper with black-eyed peas and celery root purée, and pancetta fricassee with spinach, leek puree and eggnog sauce. There’s also a sweeping cocktail bar.

What to do on Lefkada

Paragliding time on Lefkada

Paragliding

One of the most thrilling experiences to try on the island is paragliding, thanks to Lefkada’s 1,000-metre-plus elevations. The spot we’d recommend is 670 metres high at Rachi restaurant, which has a westerly-facing turf ramp for taking a running jump. The tandem experience costs about €100, and instructors will film the whole flight for you with a selfie stick. The flight takes about ten minutes and landings are on Kathisma beach. (You can reward yourself with dinner at Monato da Gusto after.)

Take a boat trip

Trident has been organising boat trips off the coast of Lefkada since the 1980s, so you’re in good hands. Departures are from the town of Nidra, and the company’s fleet of ribs accommodates seven to 12 people, with an awning for shade and a cool box of drinks. Highlights include swimming to the shores of Skorpios island, which is owned by a Russian billionaire, as well as into a giant sea cave. Other stops can include Meganisi, Kalamos, Kastos and Atokos, which has swimming black pigs. Just speak to your captain about where you would like to go.

See the sights via e-bike ride

Headed up by Antonio and Christiana, Lefkada Adventures offers both guided and self-guided e-bike tours of the island for between €50 and €70 per person. Excursions generally start and finish in Karya village, meaning you can finish with a well-earned meal at Pardalo Katsiki. Rides typically take four to six hours with a selection of easy, medium and difficult routes through the mountains.

Theotoko beach

Visit Theotoko Beach

The inaccessibility of Theotokos Beach means it attracts relatively few tourists, and the coastline feels pristine and wild (you can drive, but it’s a long, windy road down). There are small white pebbles here rather than sand, but the sea is crystal clear, and there is a path that allows you to walk about 40 minutes to the busier beach of Kathisma. If you are looking for a snack or a cold drink, Nektar Paradise is a tented beach bar that only takes cash. Nevertheless, they mix a very good Aperol spritz.

Learn how to make phyllo pies

Head to Lefkada Micro Farm to learn how to make Greece’s famous phyllo pastry pies, baked in a wood-fired oven. The experience begins with coffee and a walk around the farm to learn about the produce that is grown there. Once in the kitchen, participants stretch, stuff and roll the dough, filling the long tubes of phyllo pastry with wild greens and goat cheese, pumpkin or feta. Classes last four hours and cost €80 per person.

Wildfires Threaten Below Deck Mediterranean’s Entire Charter Season: “We Gotta F-cking Go”

"I have to figure out how to get out," Captain Sandy Yawn said as she navigated a scary issue on Below Deck Mediterranean.

yacht charter in lefkada

While a good crew can control almost every detail of a guest's experience on a mega yacht, they can't control the weather. And sometimes, that sets the course for an entire charter.

How to Watch

Watch Below Deck Mediterranean  on Mondays at 9/8c and next day on  Peacock . Catch up on the Bravo app .

During Season 9, Episode 7 of Below Deck Mediterranean , viewers got a glimpse of the wildfires that tore through Greece in summer 2023. While docked in Athens, Captain Sandy Yawn and crew were pressured to get on the road (er, sea) because of the blazing fires nearby.

"If we don't get off the dock, we're spending the day in the bulk of the smoke," the captain explained before the next batch of guests arrived. Once they did make it onto the boat, she called bosun Iain Maclean up to the bridge to chat. While the waves were looking better (which meant they could depart without major seasickness!), another super yacht had docked right in front of them.

Below Deck Med Returns for Season 9 in a Historic Location — and with Returning Yachties

"Typically, I wouldn't take the risk to leave the dock, but because we have so much smoke coming in I have to get this vessel off the dock, so I'm going to take the risk," Sandy shared in a confessional. "It's crazy. You can see the fires over the hill, I have clients on the boat, and I can smell the ash that's on top of us. I have to figure out how to get out. There's six inches between the ground line, the dock, and the other boats. I'm boxed in, and if I make one wrong maneuver, the season is over."

After dismissing Iain, she let deck crew know their escape window had arrived and they needed to head out. While it was pretty tight to navigate, the pressure was on.

"We've gotta f-cking go," someone exclaimed over the radio.

Captain Sandy Yawn reacts to weather challenges on charter

Earlier in the episode, Sandy foreshadowed the issues while discussing the weather.

“We may be delayed a little bit. It’s a little rough,” she told Aesha Scott about 30 minutes before guests were supposed to arrive. All over the boat, the crew was watching the wind pick up.

“I can’t have a lot of wind when I’m trying to maneuver out of the slip,” the captain added in a confessional. “I have to wait for a weather window. We have to get off the dock before the fires get closer and the smoke starts coming into the marina. So we have to be ready when it’s time.”

Captain sandy explains the anchor issue on mustique.

Before the wildfire conundrum,Sandy had trouble even getting to the marina . At the end of Episode 6 and beginning of Episode 7, the crew was dealing with a "scary" and "f-cking expensive" anchor issue that made their guests miss their flights.

"The anchor shaft isn't working, so we're going to have to leave the anchor," Sandy explained in the episode. "We put the buoy on it and get the divers, and then we get it transported back to the marina. And then we install it there, because we need our anchor."

Luckily, a team was able to retrieve the (important) piece of equipment. But while that issue is solved, we still don't know what will come of the current problem. Find out if Mustique makes it out to sea without incident by tuning into Below Deck Mediterranean  Mondays at 9/8c on Bravo. You can also stream the next day on Peacock.

How to Charter a Boat

If you want to sail off into the sunset, at least temporarily, you need to understand how to get aboard first.

An illustration of the bow of a boat with three women with flowing hair and cocktails looking over a man playing a guitar and then off in the water, four other vacationers are sunbathing on inner tubes.

By Lauren Sloss

This time of year, it’s an inevitable thought: Life would be that much better out on the water. Specifically, on a boat.

Even if you have neither a boat nor boating experience, it’s never been easier to make your nautical dreams come true — whether you want a day trip on your local lake or a fully staffed multiday voyage in a far-flung locale. Here are the initial questions that will help you plan an adventure on the water.

Whom are you traveling with?

Thinking about the size and dynamic of your group is an important first step, even if you are simply going on a day trip. Will children be on board? How old? What about elderly parents?

Dan Lockyer, the chief commercial officer of Dream Yacht Worldwide , strongly encourages travelers to determine group size — and, ideally, get people committed — before booking.

“The location that you want to go to, the time of year that you want to go, the type of boat that you want will entirely depend on the makeup of the group that you’re sailing with,” Mr. Lockyer said.

Do you want to captain, or do you want a captain?

Different charter companies specialize in certain locations, types of boats, itineraries and services. Some companies offer the opportunity for a “bareboat” charter, in which you rent the boat and take on the navigation and provisioning yourself, while others exclusively offer fully staffed options, including a captain and a cook.

If you want to captain the boat yourself, almost all outfits require some kind of proof of sailing or boating experience, often in line with local regulations.

Edward King, 45, an executive at a streaming company based in San Francisco, is experienced in sailing the city’s waterways. But on vacation, he said he would prefer to let a captain and crew take the lead.

Mr. King said he appreciates a captain who is familiar with both the local waters — “they’ll know how to avoid sailing into a certain sandbar,” he said, — as well as the local attractions.

In contrast, Matt Blake, 38, a software engineer based in Oakland, Calif., was eager to grow his sailing experience during a recent trip to La Paz, Mexico, with his fiancée. He hired a captain but made clear that the captain was there to help and teach.

Where do you want to go?

“Do you want something that’s more culturally oriented? Nature oriented? An adventure trip?” asked Mary Curry, the voyage product director of Adventure Life , which offers small group tours and private trips on land and on water around the world.

That answer can determine your destination. Popular cruising grounds include the Caribbean, Croatia, Alaska and French Polynesia, but the sky — or the sea — is really the limit. For help narrowing your focus, travel advisers often have relationships with charter companies or outfits around the world, and sailing publications offer recommendations.

Kyla Malkani, who has had experience with charters working as a destination wedding planner, recommends consulting the concierge of waterfront hotels, particularly for short-term or day rentals.

“A lot of times they will have either their own fleet or they will have some sort of connection at a dock,” said Ms. Malkani, 37, who is based in Washington, D.C., and is currently working as a content creator and freelance event planner.

What kind of boat?

Where you want to travel and for how long will likely determine the kinds of boats that are available to you. Crucial at this point, too, is an understanding of the boat’s layout and amenities.

“You definitely want to choose the right kind of boat,” said Ms. Malkani. “If you want more adventure, a sailboat is nice. If you’re looking for a luxury party environment, a yacht is best. And if you’re looking for something smooth, for older people or with kids, a catamaran is great.”

David Barclay is a luxury travel adviser who has also chartered boats for his own vacations.

“You want to match what the travelers want to what the boat offers,” he said.

Perhaps a group of friends might not mind a catamaran with functional but not luxurious marine bathrooms, but a multigenerational group might prefer more high-touch amenities.

When should I book?

Often, charter trips are once-in-a-lifetime experiences that require a great deal of advanced planning.

“You may have a specific place you want to go, or a specific time of year you want to travel,” said Mr. Barclay. “And some places just aren’t good at certain times of year.”

Naturally, you don’t want to be at sea in the Caribbean during hurricane season, or in the Mediterranean during winter storms. But you also might want to avoid peak cruising seasons, too.

The first three weeks of August are quite popular, said Mr. Lockyer. “If you have some flexibility and can travel in early July, you’ll get the same sort of great weather, a greater selection of boats and the anchorages won’t be as crowded.”

How much does it cost?

Charter costs are incredibly variable, dependent on all of the factors coming into play: your boat type and size, your destination, your group size, the amount of crew you’d like and the amenities on board. That said, costs could range anywhere from $2,000 for a day on a sailboat to hundreds of thousands of dollars for a multiday mega-yacht charter. Have a budget in mind when beginning your research process.

What if I didn’t plan far in advance?

While advanced planning is encouraged, and often necessary for bigger boat trips, it’s possible to book a boat last-minute.

Boatsetter , an Airbnb-like platform for boats, is a good resource for last-minute bookings, especially for day trips, and even has an Instant Book option for down-to-the-wire bookings.

“If it’s for a special event, or around major holidays, you may want to book a month or two in advance. But for general bookings, you can find options within a week or two,” said Kim Koditek, Boatsetter’s head of brand strategy and communications, of the company’s overnight offerings, which appear on their platform under the luxury yacht charters category .

Ms. Malkani has used Boatsetter for some of her charters, most of which have been booked with a specific goal in mind.

“I’m a sunset chaser,” she said. “My husband and I just really love being on the water, and we always try to squeeze in some sort of boat day activity when we’re traveling.”
