Yacht crew salary guide

A Nurse on board a superyacht is responsible for providing routine and emergency medical care to owners, guests and crew. The role is typically split between the nurse and Interior Department duties, namely housekeeping and laundry.

A yacht Nurse is a position typically found on superyachts over 50m in size. Generally speaking, the bigger the yacht, the bigger the medical department. For example, some yachts might have a dedicated SOLAS-approved hospital onboard and are equipped with an X-ray machine and a hyperbaric chamber. However, most yachts don’t have the luxury of a dedicated medical professional and positions such as a stewardess-nurse are far more common.

This means that the position often involves assistance from the housekeeping or service teams. Depending on the yacht owners’ health, you may be required to do certain medical duties, but otherwise, the role requires you to be on standby awaiting the need for medical attention.

Working onboard a superyacht as a Nurse requires a complete Nursing License. Usually, there are two Nurses working together onboard and sometimes a Doctor will be present on larger vessels. On average, medical facilities onboard a yacht are equipped with oxygen tanks, defibrillators, specialized medications and intravenous fluids.

What does a yacht Nurse do? | Yacht Nurse Job Description

A Nurse onboard a superyacht is primarily responsible for providing routine and emergency medical care, teaching CPR classes and performing fire and lifeboat drills. They also oversee and maintain the cleanliness of the medical facilities, keep all injury logs, and order and stock all of the medical inventory.

As a yacht Nurse, there may be instances where the yacht is miles away from the shore and a guest develops appendicitis or another condition. In this situation, it is up the Nurse to care for them until other help is available.

The responsibilities of a yacht Nurse include:

Doing physical exams

Assessing, observing, and speaking to patients

Providing emergency medical care

Administering medications and treatments, then monitoring patients for side effects and reactions

Teach CPR classes

Maintaining first-aid supplies and other inventory

Maintaining the cleanliness of the medical facilities

Keeping all injury logs

Regular refresher training and drills

Depending on the size of the yacht, you will also help the Interior Department with housekeeping and service

Soft and hard skills required to be a yacht Nurse

The role of a yacht Nurse is suited to someone who can successfully assess a medical situation by conducting a limited physical examination. As a guest-facing role, yacht Nurses converse regularly with owners and guests. Due to this, confidence and excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential.

Occasionally, the role may require you to be adaptable and care for an owner or guest with a specific medical condition, so someone who understands specific needs and can provide adequate care to the owner is also important.

The skills of a successful yacht Nurse include:

Knowledge to perform and evaluate diagnostic tests

Experience diagnosing illnesses and prescribing medications

Knowledge of preventive care strategies

Knowledge and experience of emergency medicine and care

Good interpersonal and communication skills

Critical thinking

Empathy

Ability to work independently

Ability to stay calm and collected in stressful situations

Mandatory certificates needed to work on board a yacht

All crew members regardless of position and seniority need to have a valid STCW Basic Safety Training certificate, along with a recognised Seafarers medical certificate, the most popular being the ENG1 which is issued by an MCA (Maritime and Coastguard Agency) professional medic.

Without these two certificates, it is not possible for crew to work on board a yacht and a Recruiter will not be able to assist you in finding work onboard a yacht. For more information about mandatory certificates please visit our Mandatory Certificates Guide .

Careers Crew Advice Recruitment

Medics – Make the move to Yachting 25 August 2021

crew agency Medic Nurse Paramedic Superyacht Crew

Getting your first job onboard a superyacht is not just about having basic yachting qualifications or whether you know your bowline from your bow line, because today, nurses, medics and paramedics are in high demand.

And with attractive salaries, luxury cruising destinations and some amazing leave packages (not to mention all the incredible friendships you’ll create), anyone with a strong medical background should definitely consider swapping sirens and surgeries for a rewarding career at sea.

What kind of medical experience do I need?

If you’re currently working as a nurse or paramedic, or have perhaps been a medic in the military in a former life, the superyacht industry wants you.

Whilst the risks of being at sea are fairly low from a medical perspective (compared to the daily challenges faced by land-based superhero health professionals), accidents do happen and health issues do arise, and when you are potentially hundreds of miles offshore or in a remote location, it’s simply not safe to await air assistance.

Many superyacht owners and management companies recognise the need to improve the health services available onboard to ensure guests and crew feel safe at all times. For this reason, many of them are upping their requirements from basic STCW & ENG1 Medical qualifications to more detailed medical training.

Granted, you might spend the majority of your time dealing with small issues like blisters, cuts and general illnesses, but you’ll enjoy a varied role with the opportunity to make a real difference to the onboard environment and operation.

As well as being responsible for medical supplies, safety drills and first aid training, you may also be asked to assist with designing and implementing processes that further minimises potential instances that require medical assistance while at sea.

What else do I need to do?

Unlike the fast-paced and stressful environment in the emergency medical services, there won’t always be an emergency or health issue that needs your attention onboard. For this reason, paramedic and nurse roles are normally combined with deckhand and stewardess duties, giving you an excellent opportunity to learn new skills.

Interior duties include laundry, housekeeping and service, while deckhands are generally responsible for maintaining the exterior and associated activities like watersports. So you’ll need to ensure your ability to remain calm under pressure and work effectively as a team transitions seamlessly from your medical role to your stewardess or deckhand role.

Having a medical background, you’ll already set yourself apart from other green crew with no experience or secondary skills. Despite this, you’ll still need to invest in a STCW & ENG1 Medical, which will set you back around £800. But trust me, you’ll earn this back and some in your first wage packet!

No matter how amazing you are at your job shore-side, you’ll also be required to have the soft skills and personality type that will ensure you can enjoy a successful superyacht career, gel well with fellow crew and give owners and guests a great onboard experience.

To be able to work hard and live together, you must be:

  • Presentable
  • Considerate
  • Level-headed

Check out our guide on how to get into yachting for more information.

What kind of yacht could medics join?

Think high-end prestigious and luxury yachts, over 50m in length, cruising worldwide destinations and catering for private guests or paying charter guests (which can also earn you hefty tips).

We also place nurses and paramedics on the growing number of new build superyachts coming out of some of the leading boat builders globally and even in land-based leisure roles like private islands.

The opportunities are endless and there are some fantastic opportunities for candidates with an excellent medical skillset, provided you have the right mindset.

So, are you a medic open to making the move to yachting? Do you want to travel, gain new skills, have awesome experiences and earn €3,500+ a month (possibly tax free and that’s at the lower end of the salary scale)?

I’d love to hear from you and would be happy to discuss current opportunities, how to tailor your CV for the yachting industry and what to expect.

I look forward to hearing from you all soon!

Superyachts seek medical personnel on board

A new service responds to the demand for medics, and highlights the concept of 'supernumeraries' under the mlc….

Image for article Superyachts seek medical personnel on board

In response to increasing requests for temporary medical staffing on board superyachts, MedAire is offering a service providing short-term medical personnel placement. The company now places experienced doctors, nurses and paramedics, who remain under their employment, on yachts to ensure medical care is always available to those on board.

Through its parent company, International SOS, which works with many oil rigs located in remote sites, MedAire benefits from a large database of medical professionals familiar with working in remote environments available for placement.

“Many of our clients are looking for a short term medical staffing solution," explains Steven Bates, general manager of yachting for MedAire. "As clients are traveling to increasingly remote locations, may be engaging in high-adrenaline sports and riskier activities, or may have a guest that needs extra medical care, there is now the option to add a doctor or paramedic on board for a period of time."

Bates adds that this service has been of particular interest to 60m-plus superyachts intending on remote cruising, and to charter yachts that might have guests with specific medical conditions and wish to have a medical professional on board just in case. Another popular request is for paediatric nurses, which help take the responsibility off crew when there are children on board.

Such personnel will remain under MedAire employment throughout the duration of their placement. They are not involved in the operations or safety of the vessel so they are not classed as crew but as contractors – something that is particularly important to note for those yachts in compliance with the MLC 2006. Supernumeraries, such as short-term medical personnel, have continued to be a grey area under the regulations.

Paul Grace, technical policy lead at the Isle of Man Ship Registry explains that, when the MLC entered into force, the term ‘supernumerary’ became largely obsolete as it was assumed that everyone on a yacht would either be a seafarer or a guest. “This caused confusion within the industry, so to provide some clarity on the definition of ‘seafarer’, ILO published a resolution providing guidance on various occupational groups,” he says.

“The Resolution allows Flag States to write their own regulations, and introduced a new phrase for people who principally work onshore, but who occasionally spend a short period working on a ship; ‘occasional workers’. Some categories of personnel are self-evidently occasional workers, for example surveyors, superintendents and port workers. Other categories are more open to interpretation since there is no agreed definition of a ‘short period working on a ship’.”

In light of this, a medical specialist who has been contracted to a yacht for a short term charter lasting a few weeks would most likely be considered an occasional worker, however this would have to be confirmed with the yacht’s Flag State. “The Flag State may have additional requirements for occasional workers, such as ensuring the medical specialist receives familiarisation training, is medically fit and has a contract from his or her employer,” Grace adds.

Finally, Grace cautions that if the medical specialist was to work on a longer charter or a series of charters, they may become considered a seafarer instead of an occasional worker. “The operators would have to be aware of this prior to the medical specialist joining a ship as they would then have to be issued with a seafarer’s employment agreement and have the same entitlements as the other seafarers on the yacht, including accommodation,” he concludes.

Stressful jobs can be fulfilling because they make a difference – in people’s health, public safety or a company's bottom line. And high-stress jobs often come with high pay. Find out whether your job is among the most stressful careers, according to experts, and how it compares with other high-stress careers from U.S. News' 100 Best Jobs ranking . Data comes from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Anesthesiologist

Median salary: $239,200 Education needed: Doctoral or professional degree Expected job growth by 2032: 2.6%

Anesthesiologists are health care professionals who monitor patient health during a procedure, adjusting the amount of anesthetic to relieve pain. "The need for precision and constant vigilance, coupled with the potential for severe complications and the unpredictability of patient responses, makes this a highly stressful job," organizational psychologist Etty Burk said in an email.

Business Operations Manager

Median salary: $98,100 Education needed: Bachelor’s degree Expected job growth by 2032: 4.2%

Business operations managers are responsible for managing all business operations and setting organizational goals. Clinical Social Worker

Median salary: $60,280 Education needed: Master’s degree Expected job growth by 2032: 9.6%

Clinical social workers are licensed social workers who can diagnose and treat individuals with behavioral, mental and emotional conditions.

While it can be rewarding, social work can be a stressful profession. “It used to be that jobs that had lives on the line every day, like first responders, were believed to face the most stress. While their jobs are still incredibly challenging, roles that involve supporting our communities have seen dramatic demands for their time and energy,” Kelly Roehm, career consultant and a senior certified professional by the Society of Human Resources Management, wrote in an email.

Community Health Worker

Median salary: $46,190 Education needed: High school diploma or equivalent Expected job growth by 2032: 14.1%

Community health workers rank No. 2 among the Best Jobs Without a College Degree and No. 4 among the Best Social Services Jobs . They work with community and health professionals to promote wellness.

According to Roehm, because communities often lack adequate resources, these workers are often paid far less than other health care professionals. “Coupled with loss of funding, increasing caseloads and burnout have impacted these vital workers,” she said.

Child and Family Social Worker

Median salary: $50,820 Education needed: Bachelor’s degree Expected job growth by 2032: 5.3%

Child and family social workers provide interventions and support to ensure the well-being of children and families in need. “Post-COVID, we saw rising rates of children in school struggling to keep up and parents trying to balance child care and work, which is why children's services workers are carrying a heavy load,” Roehm said.

Median salary: $155,040 Education needed: Doctoral or professional degree Expected job growth by 2032: 4.4%

Dentists identify and treat problems with a patient's mouth, gums and teeth. Career counselor Lynn Berger says that dentists have one of the most stressful jobs because most patients don’t like going to the dentist and may even feel scared or uncomfortable.

Managing the emotions that patients experience can be mentally taxing. “The most stressful occupations are those with much responsibility and not a lot of positive reward and feedback,” she explained in an email.

Median salary: $90,680 Education needed: Bachelor’s degree Expected job growth by 2032: 8.2%

Financial analysts are responsible for analyzing financial data, trends and market conditions to help businesses make informed financial decisions. While they make lucrative salaries, their job is not easy. "The need for accuracy, staying updated on market trends and making impactful decisions under tight deadlines is compounded by the volatility of financial markets, which financial analysts cannot influence," Burk said.

Median salary: $62,360 Education needed: Bachelor’s degree Expected job growth by 2032: 1%

In the U.S., high school teachers typically teach students from the ninth through 12th grades. While working with teenagers can be rewarding, it can be stressful as well.

“Educators often work long hours for little pay while managing overloaded classrooms, meeting strict curriculum standards and dealing with challenging student behaviors. This results in high attrition,” Hughes explained.

How Generative AI Will Change Jobs In Healthcare

Generative AI has the potential to change the way professionals work in every industry. In healthcare, it is set to revolutionize the way we diagnose and treat diseases, research new medicines and therapies, and manage routine administrative tasks.

Of course, AI will never replace the experience, skills and human touch of doctors and nurses. Instead, it will let them augment their abilities and expertise with super-fast insights and analysis. It can also relieve them of many of the time-consuming and routine tasks that prevent them from spending time with patients and directly improving outcomes.

Healthcare jobs are changing, and whether you are involved in delivering frontline care, developing new treatments or managing resources and infrastructure, understanding the opportunities and challenges is essential.

So, in this article, I will outline some of the exciting possibilities that generative AI brings to the table for healthcare professionals, as well as some of the challenges they will face as their roles evolve.

Generative AI In Diagnosis And Treatment

Generative AI will assist doctors and other frontline medical staff in diagnosing patients, thanks to its ability to analyze complex and disparate datasets including medical images and patient notes. Image recognition algorithms can scan x-rays, ultrasounds, MRI and CT scans, with numerous studies now emerging that show they can be as accurate as human experts at doing this. Generative AI then translates the output into human language that can even be personalized for individual specialists involved in treating the patient.

Biden vs. trump 2024 election polls: biden leads trump by only single digits in new york, latest survey shows, here are the major allegations against sean diddy combs as cassie ventura breaks silence on attack video.

Before long, it is likely that we will see it producing personalized treatment programs , identifying specific treatments, medicines and therapies that are most likely to be effective for individuals.

Chatbots powered by generative AI will act as virtual medical assistants, providing triage and gathering patient data, as well as identifying the best human medical professionals to refer patients to. They will also provide specialist and personalized advice; for example, the OneRemission chatbot is programmed to help cancer patients through their recovery by offering diet and lifestyle advice, while Youper is designed to offer advice on mental health.

And it will help healthcare professionals to monitor the wellbeing of patients by providing a narrative around data streams generated by wearable devices and remote monitoring tools, either in hospital or home settings. This will provide early warning signs if a patient’s condition is deteriorating, or alert carers in the case of situations such as an elderly person suffering a fall.

Research And Development

Generative AI is already accelerating the process of discovering new drugs. For example, UK biotech firm Etcembly recently created the first immunotherapy drug for patients that was designed with the help of generative AI.

By generating hundreds of millions of genetic codes for T-cell receptors, scientists were able to complete research that would usually have taken many years in just a few weeks.

As well as generating data in the form of words and pictures, as with generative tools like ChatGPT and Dall-E, algorithms can create synthetic candidates for drug trials. It can create candidates for molecular structures that may have desired effects such as binding to specific receptors, or inhibiting enzyme production, and simulate tests to determine their likely real-world effects.

It can also suggest where drugs previously developed for other conditions might be repurposed to treat specific illnesses, as has been shown by this study into potential treatments for Alzheimer’s disease.

Generative AI algorithms are also being used to simulate human physiological responses to drugs, creating ethical alternatives to human or animal testing .

Overall, generative AI is already showing remarkable potential for helping researchers and chemists formulate and test new drugs, and we can expect to see it playing an increasingly important role in this field in the near future.

Ethical Implications

Although generative AI offers huge potential for improving patient outcomes and driving new frontiers of medical research, it also creates challenges around ethics and regulation.

Medical professionals, perhaps more so than any other professionals, will be required to understand issues around data, privacy and bias and how they might impact their roles.

Many of the use cases we’ve discussed here, particularly those involving personalization, will require access to highly sensitive and personal information. Healthcare professionals will need a comprehensive understanding of how this data can be securely and responsibly collected, processed and stored. They will also need to develop an awareness of when work can be delegated to AI and when a human touch is irreplaceable.

We can also expect that the use of AI, and particularly generative AI, in the healthcare sector will be subject to more stringent regulations than it might be elsewhere. Professionals will need to understand their own legal responsibilities and obligations. It will also be important to develop a thorough grounding in the principle of AI accountability and liability – after all, humans must always take ultimate responsibility for the provision of patient care. New, specialized roles are likely to emerge here, concerned with ensuring generative AI is only implemented in an ethical and accountable way.

AI And The Future Of Healthcare Jobs

Overall, as generative AI tools become more deeply embedded across the day-to-day responsibilities of caregivers, their responsibilities will evolve. Less time will be taken up with routine and administrative work, meaning more time can be spent consulting with patients as well as updating their own skills and knowledge.

We’re only in the early stages of this revolution but its impact is already starting to be felt, and by preparing for it now, doctors, nurses, paramedics, therapists, researchers and managers can ensure they play a pivotal role in ensuring it benefits as many patients as possible.
