What is left for Yacht Rock Revue to prove? This top-notch group of musicians has already rocked onstage with John Oates, Eddie Money (RIP), and both versions of the band Player. They’ve trademarked the term “yacht rock,” both metaphorically and literally (U.S. Registration Number 3834195). From humble beginnings in a basement, touring in partnership with Live Nation and Sirius XM, they now headline sold-out shows across the country, from Webster Hall in New York to the Wiltern in L.A. While rising from bars to amphitheaters, they’ve ticked every box on the Rock Star Accomplishments bingo card. Except for one: Writing and singing their own songs.

Yacht Rock Revue’s first original record is ten songs inspired by the smoooooth sounds of the Seventies and Eighties. They’ve brazenly titled it Hot Dads In Tight Jeans – forgive them for bragging, but that’s what they are – and it returns Yacht Rock Revue to their roots in original music.

“I had a midlife crisis. That’s why we made this album,” says Nick Niespodziani, the group’s singer, guitarist, and spiritual leader. “Everyone in the band is a dad now, so we needed to make this happen, before we become grandpas. I’ve sung ‘Escape’ by Rupert Holmes at least a thousand times, and if that isn’t paying your dues, I don’t know what is.”

It’s rare that musicians in their 40s chase their rock star dreams. You’d have to be crazy to try. YRR knew they were underdogs, but resolved to take one more shot at the Top 40, and maybe even become a Cinderella story of midlife fulfillment.

Yacht Rock Revue began in the least-yachtiest of states, 2,000 miles from breezy Marina del Rey. Niespodziani and Pete Olson met in the fourth grade in suburban Indiana, went on to Indiana University in the late Nineties, formed the band Y-O-U, then escaped – Rupert Holmes reference intended – to Atlanta. One night, Y-O-U tucked their tongues deep in their cheeks and played a show of Yacht Rock songs. The rowdy (a nice way of saying drunk), sold-out crowd loved it.

When the club owner asked them to do it again, Niespodziani didn’t want to. But the club owner had an ace up his sleeve: money. Over the years, YRR (there’s also a Dave, a Greg, and literally three guys named Mark) have turned themselves into human wine spritzers, playing 120 to 150 shows a year, mastering Yacht Rock’s slick chords and mellow grooves, and partying like it’s 1979.

What began as a joke among friends soon put a ripple in the zeitgeist, starting a national trend through YRR’s concerts, lauded as “unabashedly joyous affairs” by Entertainment Weekly. They accumulated an extensive wardrobe of white belts and polyester shirts. Yacht Rock Revue were revered and well-compensated! Their life was a tenor sax solo! This is what every musician wants. But even as YRR was sailing the smooth seas of tribute-band superstardom, and the band members all became dads, Niespodziani was still writing original songs.

These  new tunes had the spirit of Yacht Rock, but were more modern – akin to Phoenix or Air, the hip bands that adapted Yacht for a younger audience. They brought the songs to a hot producer, Ben Allen, who’s worked with Gnarls Barkley, Animal Collective, and Neon Indian. Allen gave the songsa lustrous shine, for both new audiences and their ever-loyal fans, the Nation of Smooth. Niespodziani and Olson even co-wrote a song, “Big Bang,” with Yacht Rock master Matthew Wilder, famous for his massive 1983 hit “Break My Stride.”

“Step,” the record’s first single, is a peppy number replete with falsetto and bumping bass, a cross between the Bee Gees and Steely Dan’s “Peg.” It’s also the mission statement for the album in a way, because it’s about deciding who you want to be, and making space for that in your life. The seven-piece band display tight chops, and the songs incorporate Yacht Rock Revue’s sense of humor, especially on the funky, pro-margarita “Bad Tequila,” the flute-fired “Another Song About California,” and opening track “The Doobie Bounce,” where Niespodziani brags, “I used to sleep on couches/Now I sleep on nicer couches.”

Hot Dads In Tight Jeans is as plush and shiny as Kenny Loggins’ beard. And YRR are already dropping these new songs into their sets, to great response from longtime fans who are thrilled to hear new smooth. While others in YRR’s position stick with the tried-and-true, Niespodziani hopes the album will let them welcome aboard new fans, too. To paraphrase a notable mariner… they’re gonna need a bigger yacht.

“Here’s how I see it,” Niespodziani concludes, sliding into a waiting limousine. “We have only one fewer hit than Player did, and Player is immortal. We built this Yacht Rock thing on the power of memories and good vibes. None of that is changing; we're just gonna make a few new memories as well."

Summer Music List: A Smooth Yacht Rock Playlist

yacht rock siriusxm summer 2023

We’ve had some amazing summer music lists so far this season, and I have to thank Greg Byrnes, Kevin Downey, Jr., Robert Spencer, and Stephen Green for their contributions. There’s more good stuff to come, too!

Today I want to add a list that covers a genre that’s perfect for summertime relaxation. Okay, so the term “Yacht Rock” didn’t enter the vernacular until around 2005, but we all know what it is: that sophisticated strain of soft rock that hit the airwaves from the late ‘70s through the early ‘80s. (Okay, not all of us. I had dinner with a friend of mine over the weekend, and my friend had never heard the term.)

Because it’s just nebulous enough to defy definition, yacht rock purists will debate the specifics of the genre until they’re blue in the face. Often, yacht rock radio stations will infuriate me by placing too much emphasis on obscure songs or minor hits. Sometimes, radio programmers will limit their playlists to a small circle of artists.

Since this is my list, it’s my rules. So there. But I think you’ll enjoy my yacht rock summer songs. These songs may not specifically mention summertime — most of them don't at all — but for people of a certain generation (or two), they'll conjure up images of long days by the pool, beach, or lake, living the good life.

I’m going to start with a song that the two biggest titans of yacht rock wrote and recorded. We’re all familiar with the Doobie Brothers’ version of “What a Fool Believes,” which lead singer Michael McDonald co-wrote. His smooth vocals and that weird synth sound drive the song, which hit #1 and won Record of the Year at the Grammys.

Before the Doobies made it a hit, McDonald’s co-writer Kenny Loggins recorded “What a Fool Believes.” While it’s not the masterpiece that the Doobie Brothers’ version is, it’s still a terrific record — and since I’ve discovered it, I’ve been able to discern which of McDonald’s vocal parts is the melody and which is the harmony.

McDonald — both as a solo artist and with the Doobie Brothers — and Loggins are the kings of yacht rock, and there are tons of examples of why:

Christopher Cross is another one of those titans of yacht rock, and he parlayed a soft rock sound into a couple of years of massive success.

Another band whose name is synonymous with yacht rock is Toto, a band that formed from some of the top names among studio musicians:

The nucleus of Toto had a hand in another yacht rock classic: Boz Scaggs’ “Lowdown,” which became his biggest hit and won him a Grammy for Best R&B Song.

Some of the early hits by Hall & Oates fit squarely among the yacht rock greats:

Atlanta Rhythm Section contributed an essential yacht rock hit with “So Into You”:

And the band hosted a music festival for two years in the ‘70s based on their single “Champagne Jam.”

Singer-songwriter Stephen Bishop was one of the more cerebral yacht rock artists:

We even have examples of yacht rock from the UK with hits by Ace, 10cc, and Gerry Rafferty.

Peter Beckett of Player is also originally from the UK.

I had the pleasure of meeting Ambrosia’s David Pack when he visited my church in the early ‘90s as the guest of my friend Kerry Livgren. He’s one of the smoothest vocalists in yacht rock.

Duo England Dan & John Ford Coley created smooth sounds that were perfect for yacht rock.

Unfortunately, there aren’t many women in yacht rock. We saw Stevie Nicks duetting with Kenny Loggins earlier, and purists debate on whether to include Fleetwood Mac in the genre. (I do.)

The late Nicolette Larson had a single hit that is forever part of the yacht rock pantheon with her cover of Neil Young’s “Lotta Love.”

There are so many other yacht rock greats that I could include, but I’ll leave you with my all-time favorite yacht rock song by the late, great Paul Davis :

Raise a glass with me to a smooth summer!

We spent $20,980 to see the Formula 1 Grand Prix live. The luxury yacht party and epic balcony views weren't even the best parts.

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

My fiancé and I splurged on a trip to Monaco for our very first Formula 1 Grand Prix.

For about $20,980, we stayed in Nice, France , and attended the races all weekend.

We also attended a luxurious yacht party and soaked in views of Monaco during the race.

My fiancé and I saved up to celebrate our recent engagement in style during one of the year's most iconic, expensive weekends: the Formula 1 (F1) Monaco Grand Prix.

The F1 Monaco Grand Prix is an annual race for drivers in the highest class of international racing for single-seater formula cars.

Though the sport is popular in Europe, it gained the attention of international audiences with the release of Netflix's Formula 1 documentary series, "Drive to Survive." In a 2022 poll from Morning Consult , 53% of nearly 1,900 F1 fans said the series contributed to their interest in the sport.

However, we've been dedicated F1 fans long before the series launched in 2019, and have always considered the Monaco Grand Prix the best race on the calendar.

Like many fans, we were willing to splurge to see some of our favorite drivers and were excited to attend the event this past May. We purchased a package from F1 Experiences for £15,220, or about $19,370, with a $1,610 yacht party add-on. The package for my partner and me included a hotel stay , two days of live racing, and transportation to and from the event.

From an unbelievable balcony view of the racetrack to cheering on a historic win, here's what the experience was like.

We stayed at a hotel in Nice, France.

We stayed four nights at the Hyatt Regency Nice Palais de la Méditerranée on the French Riviera, a 30-to-40-minute drive from Monaco.

Our hotel-room balcony overlooked the stunning Côte d'Azur region, and we were within walking distance of Nice's historic and charming old town.

We prepared for the high-energy weekend by celebrating at a yacht party.

To fully experience the glamorous lifestyle in Monaco, we indulged in a yacht party on Friday night. This experience was an add-on to our overall package, and it cost £1,265, or about $1,610.

We boarded the boat and were greeted with glasses of Champagne. The bottomless drinks and canapés flowed as the onboard DJ pumped music, drowning out the sounds of nearby boats.

As dusk turned to nightfall, the partygoers seemed to buzz with anticipation for the excitement the weekend had to offer — and we couldn't wait.

On Saturday, I was excited to finally attend the main event, the Grand Prix.

On Saturday, we boarded a coach bus to Monaco and headed to the Ermanno Penthouse to watch the race. There, we climbed up 12 flights of stairs for a taste of Monégasque luxury.

The Penthouse's balcony terrace — overlooking the Port Hercules marina, stacked with at least 250 yachts — gave us an unbelievable panoramic view of Monaco's shimmering blue coastline and at least two-thirds of the racetrack.

From our viewpoint, we could see the start and finish line, up the hill toward the Casino de Monte-Carlo, the racetrack's tunnel exit, around the marina, and even the champions' podium.

We felt the thrill of the race from our balcony.

Saturday's qualifying session was electrifying. Throughout the day, we saw the Formula 3 and Formula 2 sprint races, which typically feature aspiring F1 drivers . Then, we saw the F1 free practice three, which served as a practice round for F1 drivers to fine-tune their skills.

Lastly, we saw the F1 qualifying race, which determined each driver's place on the grid for Sunday's event.

I did notice, however, that my fiancé and I seemed to be two of the very few true F1 fans on the balcony. Many of our neighbors appeared to be new to the sport and seemed more interested in selfies or sparkling wine.

We enjoyed food and drinks as well.

Not only could we see much of Monaco from the balcony, but also we enjoyed warm hospitality from the staff.

The staff members served various snacks and offered as much Champagne, spirits, and soft drinks as we wanted. For breakfast, we had croissants and pain au chocolat with coffee, followed by finger sandwiches, sliders, canapés, and tasty desserts.

We even had a few celebrity sightings.

Celebrating the same event as A-list celebrities like John Legend , Anya Taylor-Joy, and Kylian Mbappé felt like a real pinch-me moment — though we only caught glimpses of them in the VIP area on TV screens showing sports coverage, the same way viewers would see them on television.

The celebrities at the Grand Prix, which took place just after the star-studded Cannes Film Festival, made it feel like the spot to be.

We saw a race-car collision from our balcony.

Unfortunately, the weekend wasn't all positive. During the first lap of Sunday's F1 race, we saw a massive crash involving several drivers who couldn't continue in the event.

On a more positive note, we saw our favorite driver win the Grand Prix.

The highlight of the weekend was cheering Ferrari F1 driver and Monégasque Charles Leclerc on to his first-ever victory at the Monaco Grand Prix.

As Leclerc's bright-red Ferrari zoomed by with a clear lead on his last lap, a symphony of boats blared their horns, and the crowd erupted in cheers. Leclerc is also the first Monégasque driver to win the race in over 90 years.

We watched the Champagne showers and celebrations on the podium, and my fiancé and I shared a kiss (and a few happy tears). It was the perfect end to an unforgettable weekend.

Overall, we were so glad we got to attend the Monaco Grand Prix.

Overall, attending the Grand Prix in person was worth the money for us. We saw our favorite driver achieve a historic F1 milestone on a legendary track along a beautiful European coastline.

Though I wouldn't say it's worth the splurge for those who don't follow F1, plenty of guests on our balcony were there for the vibes, the flowing drinks, and the lush atmosphere.

We'd consider attending another F1 Grand Prix in the future. Still, our first taste of Monaco had our hearts racing — and the experience will be incredibly tough to top.

Split Image Of Will Smith, Stephen A. Smith, Chris Rock

Stephen A. Smith is “standing down” after receiving backlash for saying Will Smith needs to publicly address the Black community regarding him slapping Chris Rock at the 2022 Academy Awards.

During Monday’s (June 10) episode of The Stephen A. Smith Show , the ESPN anchor clarified his original comments before acknowledging the feedback he’s received from Will Smith supporters.

Shannon Sharpe's 'First Take' Role To Expand In Multi-Year Mega Deal With ESPN

Stephen then added that he never discouraged the public from supporting Will, and acknowledged that the actor’s life has been “more good than bad.” He also shared that he received countless messages from Black fans of Will who wholeheartedly disagree with the notion that the actor “owes” the Black community anything.

“‘Who said he lost our support? He never lost it. We didn’t like what he did…but damn it, we love Will Smith and we forgive him,'” Stephen said while quoting those who’ve messaged him in Will’s defense. “‘You don’t hear Chris Rock talking about it, complaining about him. Eventually, they’ll meet and they’ll talk, Stephen A.’ We heard all of that. So, I got to stand down.”

During his original rant, Stephen A. alluded to the veteran actor’s resurgence of success, insisting he remains in debt to the Black community, mainstream acceptance aside.

Stephen A. made it clear he had no intent to villianize Smith, but that he feels as if the Philadelphia native owes some sort of explanation or reasoning behind his actions on the night of the incident. “Everybody makes a mistake. This is not hatred. I love Will Smith still. But you gotta have a conversation as to why you did that.”

The ESPN First Take star also voiced his skepticism over if Smith would’ve assaulted a Caucasian comedian, a sentiment echoed by others while reacting to the moment. “We know you wouldn’t have smacked Ricky Gervais, Bill Maher, Bill Burr or a host of others,” Smith said.

“We know you wouldn’t have done that. No apology is necessary. I’m just saying a lot of folks ain’t get over that. A lot of folks find it hard to just go to the movies to watch you. I’m one of those people.”

Stephen A. concluded his message by acknowledging Smith’s talents, albeit while vowing not to watch his films until he properly atones for his actions.

“Will Smith, you’re phenomenal. Phenomenal talent, phenomenal actor, phenomenal individual, you lost your way one night,’ the New York Times bestseller said. “We need to hear that from you. I’m sorry. That’s what I need to do before I look forward to seeing your movies again, more than seeing a sit down.”

Will Smith’s onstage slap of Rock following a joke the comedian made about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett-Smith, created shockwaves through the entertainment industry.

The fourth installment of Bad Boys , Smith and costar Martin Lawrence’s storied film franchise, debuted at No. 1 at the box office, earning $56 million domestically and an additional $48.6 million internationally, accounting for a total of $104.6 million in global sales.
