“Zephyr represents a harmonious balance of bold creativity and enduring style, making it a standout in any era,” Dörries Yachts CEO Henning Dörries told Robb Report via email.

“The final design is not only stunning but also boasts a timeless appeal with modern surfacing and meticulous detailing,” added H2 owner Jonny Horsfield. “Featuring expansive glass and spacious outdoor decks, Zephyr epitomizes the contemporary preferences of today’s discerning clientele.”

The interior is sure to be gargantuan, though Dörries has yet to specify the gross tonnage. The German shipyard also didn’t share any details regarding the layout of the living quarters, but pictures of the exterior show that Zephyr will certainly not be short on luxury amenities.

Zephyr Megayacht

Starting at the top, the sundeck is adorned with a plunge pool and sun pads forward and a large circular lounge aft. Alfresco dining areas big enough for 12 and more plush lounges grace the next two decks, while an inviting Jacuzzi occupies pride of place in the bow. The bow is so long it can also accommodate a helicopter that can be used for comings and goings. The owner’s suite will likely have private access to the bow area, as is customary with many high-end cruisers.

Dörries Yachts has unveiled some pretty extraordinary megayachts and explorers over the past few years, but Zephyr is perhaps one of the most divine designs. The best part? The megyacht is up for sale. More details will be announced at the Monaco Yacht Show in late September, with a full sales brochure also available to interested buyers.

I took powerboat training with Zephy in October 2019, that was good. But then we booked the STCW course with them for w/c 23rd October 2023; on the 19th October they wrote to say it was cancelled (they said, because "the instructor" was ill and they couldn't get a replacement at short notice). I foolishly re-booked with them (instead of cancelling and getting my money back) for w/c 8th July 2024 and have today (24th June) been told that one has been cancelled too. We booked an apartment specially for these courses which of course came at cost. Fortunately there was 1 remaining place at Seacope which I have booked. Fingers crossed that goes ahead and is good! Now seen other reviews which support that Zephyr has been chaotic, disorganised in other instances too. GO ELSEWHERE! ZEPHYR CAN'T BE RELIED ON!

Michael Broom Smith

Michael Broom Smith

I personally would advise against booking with Zephyr. We first booked an SCTW course for my son for October 2023, which Zephyr then cancelled with less than a week to go. We decided to give them the benefit of the doubt and re-book for 8th July 2024. Zephyr then emails on 25th June to cancel the course. This in my book is unacceptable. We have three flights booked, kept our apartment empty (i.e. not rented) for the week and my son delayed taking up paid employment in London to be able to attend the course. We have transferred to Seascape in Antibes, so hopefully no harm done. But this is an unacceptable way to run a business. If you cannot run a course, then you shouldn't take bookings. So, if you are making complicated (and expensive) plans to attend a course then I would book with somebody else.

AVOID. I WILL NOT BOOK ANOTHER COURSE HERE. (I passed but badly run which put me off) I did my Sailing Yachmaster, in summary; -Course was canceled then went ahead. -A few days before the course started the start date got moved a day earlier. -Onboard preparation got cut 2 days short because they hadn't booked an examiner then the only one available could only do mid week. -Mulitple long joining emails that sometimes contradicted each other. -Examiner threatened not to do the exam because the forms we'd been asked to bring weren't right/how he had asked Zephyr for them to be done. Then rants at us about how Zephyr is always chaotic, like we weren't well aware by this point and nervous about the exam about to start. -The only available chart on the first day was so old the lights at the home port harbour mouth were no longer visible. -Nice boat but lacked several bits of equipment: fire/gas alarm, enough lifeline tethers on the first day, dividers or Portland ploter. (Luckily most of us had brought our own) Also the steaming light was broken. So the exam started "these are the things that we know aren't right." -No food provided which was a suprise but then told the day before the exam that we had to provide the food for the examiner as well. I also did my stcw refresher at Zephyr just before the YM course and found the process chaotic and frustrating. Certificates not ready at the end of the course and then issued with an incorrect pass date on them. However I'd like to say Jason was a good teacher. I have since confirmed similar experiences, so I'm surprised to find such good reviews. My reason for writing this is because I want Zephyr to improve and untill then people to know what to expect.

DO NOT USE ZEPHYR FOR YACHTMASTER - I write this as a warning to anybody looking to book their Yachtmaster - Yes Zephyr may be a few hundred Euros cheaper - But for a reason. It baffles me why I am the first to review this as countless people I have met within the yachting community have had the same experiences and hold the same views. The instructor Colin (who i believe is also the owner of the company), has absolutely 0 patience or it seems interest in teaching the course, which is made readily apparent. As with any yachting course, some pre study and at least a expected understanding of the syllabus is needed, however it seems to slip over this mans had that students are in fact paying a large amount of money, for tuition and assistance with understanding what is a large amount of information in a short period of time (often for the first time with this being 'an entry level licence') Instead, this man seems to think that reading through slides then asking the class to do a question is the extent of what people pay thousands of euros for, when asked to do anything past this such as something so unthinkable as asking for help understanding something he seems to become rather p****d off and is quite happy to make it apparent. This is all made very clear on day one, leading students to feel they can not ask for assistance as it is wrong to do so, instead students sit in silence once his slideshow reading is over and he retires to his chair after asking the class to do another question, during the silent period, students work and await the walk around of Collin once he is finished scrolling through his phone, looking at what students have calculated, to either be met with "ok" or "WHY HAVE YOU GOT THAT?!" "WHAT DONT YOU UNDERSTAND ABOUT WHAT WEVE JUST SEEN!" a common response: "Well i understand xyz but I am struggling with ...". "WELL WHY?!" is the normal responce, followed by a confrontational rant in which teaches nothing. If you want to pay thousands of Euros to read slideshows you can access online for 180 euros then this is the place to go. Not covering the whole syllabus in the classroom here at Zephyr of course, missing out on small subjects like IRPCS, meteorology and passage planning, the 2 small non important subjects in the maritime world. This should be learnt at home during the week by purchasing some books next door in riviera charts. Week one complete, exams passed by complete self tuition for the entirety of evenings after class. Practical week, make your way to the navigational hazard with a diesel engine "Aladin", probably named that because by some magic its still floating. Look forward to another week of what should be enjoyable practical exercises, alas its Collin again, so rather its a week of ranting, being belittled, screamed at, patronised and told how useless you are. The 2 day exam at the end actually feels like 2 days off from captain conifdence himself. If you want to enjoy your Yachtmaster as you should, study as much you can before booking (like all yacthing courses), and book with a reputable school, that actually understands that people are paying thousands of euros for tuition and guidance. Not a miserable face, ranting and confrontation. If you dont want run the class anymore Collin, stop doing it or stop taking peoples money and being a miserable B*****D to them.

How did the superyacht Bayesian sink? Experts say weather was just one factor

Divers searching for 6 missing people locate 5 bodies inside wrecked yacht's hull.

zephyr yachting reviews

Social Sharing

A complicated search effort is underway deep beneath the surface of the Mediterranean Sea, off the coast of Italy, where a superyacht sank early Monday during a fierce storm.

Dive crews are attempting to enter the wreck of the Bayesian, a 56-metre long British-flagged luxury vessel, which is sitting in some 50 metres of water near the Sicilian fishing village of Porticello.

Fifteen of the 22 passengers and crew members on board were rescued. Divers searching for six people considered missing, including British businessman Mike Lynch, located five bodies inside the yacht's hull on Wednesday, and retrieved four of them from the water.

Searchers previously recovered the body of Recaldo Thomas, the ship's Canadian-Antiguan cook, in the water not far from where the Bayesian sank.

Questions have emerged about why a boat designed to handle severe weather sank so rapidly and whether or not some of its features could've been a factor in its demise. Maritime experts say investigations may, in time, reveal what led to the disaster.

"There needs to be an investigation as to why this happened, what went wrong and, you know, how to prevent it in the future cases," said Simon Boxall, an oceanographer and senior lecturer at the University of Southampton in England.

Canadian dead, others missing after superyacht sinks near Sicily

How did the bayesian sink so quickly.

Grainy footage from closed-circuit cameras on the shore broadcast on the website of the Giornale di Sicilia newspaper showed the Bayesian's majestic mast just before it disappeared.

Karsten Borner, captain of the Sir Robert Baden Powell, which rescued the survivors who managed to get into a lifeboat, told The Associated Press he was close enough to be able to see the Bayesian as the storm came in.

"A moment later, she was gone," he said.

The survivors told the rescuers they went flat on the water "and were sunk in two minutes."

Boxall said vessels rely on being able to steer and navigate stormy seas, but the Bayesian was anchored and stationary, which likely made it more vulnerable to the storm and, potentially, a waterspout , or mini tornado that creates a whirlwind over the surface of the sea.

He said it was also dark, meaning "you wouldn't see this sort of very unique event coming towards you."

zephyr yachting reviews

CCTV footage shows yacht Bayesian as deadly storm strikes

"It's a freak of nature," Boxall said. "I think the fact that so many have survived, so far, is probably a miracle."

Tom Sharpe, a retired Royal Navy commander and defence commentator, told CBC News the weather was likely not the only issue.

He says it's rare that a weather event like this takes down a boat.

"There's nearly always a sequence [of events]," he said in an interview from Guildford, England, explaining that everything from safety protocols to the culture on board the vessel needs to be taken into account.

Two men sit on the left side of a table, opposite from three other men, looking at a illustrations of a the interior of a sunken superyacht.

Was the boat's design part of the problem?

The Bayesian was built in 2008 by Italian luxury yacht maker Perini Navi.

Andrea Ratti, a nautical design professor at Milan Polytechnic, told Reuters that a boat the size of the Bayesian could only sink so rapidly by taking on a huge amount of water.

He suggested that one or more portholes, windows or other openings may have been broken or smashed open by the waterspout, letting in water. There has also been media speculation that a major hatch might have been inadvertently left open.

Reports have also highlighted that the Bayesian featured a 72-metre mast — one of the tallest in the world.

A nighttime view of a yacht with a tall mast, with lights on it, moored on the water with the lights of a city in the background.

Ratti said an unusually tall mast is not by itself an element of vulnerability in a storm.

A second expert, structural engineer Filippo Mattioni, was also skeptical about the suggestion the boat may have sunk due to a broken mast, which likely would have caused major damage smashing against the hull.

Fire department diver Marco Tilotta told the newspaper Il Messaggero that the wreck was "apparently intact," with "no gashes, no signs of impact." However, only half of the hull is visible to divers.

The Bayesian also had a retractable keel — the fin-like structure under the hull that helps stabilize boats and acts as a counterweight to the mast.

Both Ratti and Mattioni wondered if the yacht had been anchored with the keel up, reducing the vessel's depth under water and making it less stable. Ratti said strong winds might have caused the boat to start oscillating wildly, "like a pendulum," putting exceptional strain on the mast.

Sharpe pointed out that a mast the size of the Bayesian's is designed for a massive sail, and without that sail raised and catching the wind, the gusts likely would've had a negligible impact on the aluminum pole.

  • What we know about the capsized superyacht off the Sicilian coast

He instead suggested the anchor may have played a pivotal role.

"My kind of working assumption is that she was probably a bit further in at anchor, and it's very likely, in these sort of conditions, that her anchor dragged," he said.

In such a situation, he said, a crew is better off steering toward the anchor to stabilize the vessel or raising the anchor and heading out to sea to ride out the storm.

"They might have got caught in that middle ground where they're not on a particularly good anchorage, but the anchor is now controlling the bow of the ship."

Sicily superyacht rescue: What divers are up against | About That

What caused the extreme weather.

Although Sharpe says the weather is unlikely the sole cause of the sinking, he notes the Mediterranean isn't the calm sea often pictured in travel brochures.

"It can get pretty nasty," he said.

The type of storm that struck Monday is fuelled by warm water and the Mediterranean is warmer than ever, said Boxall, noting there's been about a three and a half degree increase in the 20-year average temperature.

'The ship behind us was gone,' says captain who rescued yacht passengers

Climatologists say global warming is making such violent and unexpected tempests more frequent.

Luca Mercalli, president of Italy's meteorological society, said the sea surface temperature around Sicily in the days leading up to the shipwreck was about 30 C.

"This creates an enormous source of energy that contributes to these storms," he told Reuters.

Five bodies found in sunken superyacht, officials say

Divers have found five bodies in the sunken wreckage of a superyacht that sank off Sicily this week, Italian officials told news agencies and local media Wednesday, leaving one person still missing.

Three bodies were brought ashore and two others were also found inside the shipwreck, Salvatore Cocina, head of the Sicily civil protection agency, told the Associated Press, after divers were photographed by the agency unloading body bags. Cocina did not identify the deceased.

The British-flagged, 183-foot-long Bayesian was carrying 12 passengers and 10 crew members roughly half a mile from the Sicilian fishing village of Porticello when it encountered what authorities called a “violent storm” about 4 a.m. Monday.

Of the 15 people rescued, eight – including a 1-year-old girl – were taken to hospitals in conditions that were not life-threatening. The body of the yacht’s chef, identified as Recaldo Thomas, a Canadian Antiguan, was found during initial recovery efforts.

Among the passengers was Mike Lynch, 59, the British founder of the tech venture capital firm Invoke Capital and co-founder of the tech firms Autonomy and Darktrace. This summer, he was acquitted of all charges after a decadelong U.S. fraud trial related to the 2011 sale of Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard.

The voyage on the Bayesian, owned by a company controlled by Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, was intended to be a celebration of his legal victory, Britain’s Telegraph reported.

Among those missing were Lynch; his 18-year-old daughter, Hannah; Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife, Judy; and attorney Chris Morvillo, a partner at Clifford Chance in New York who represented Lynch in the recently concluded legal battle, and his wife, Neda. Bacares, Lynch’s wife, was among the survivors.

It’s not clear exactly what type of storm struck the Bayesian, but weather data suggests it was probably a tornadic waterspout or severe thunderstorm.

Charlotte Golunski, a guest of Lynch who was rescued, described to Italian media holding onto her 1-year-old daughter, Sophie, amid the storm. “For two seconds I lost my baby in the sea,” she told Giornale di Sicilia. “Then I immediately hugged her again amid the fury of the waves.”

Lynch sold Autonomy, which was once England’s biggest software company, to Hewlett-Packard in 2011 for more than $11 billion. He was subsequently accused of overvaluing the company and was charged in the United States with fraud. He was acquitted in June.

The Bayesian was built in 2008 by Italian shipmaker Perini Navi, according to the SuperYacht Times.

The Sir Robert, a Dutch-flagged sailing vessel anchored nearby, responded immediately to help survivors before the Italian coast guard arrived.

The yacht sank to a depth of more than 160 feet. The first attempt by fire-brigade cave divers to search inside the yacht was unsuccessful, rescue authorities said.

Bryan Pietsch contributed to this report.

zephyr concept h2 design and dorries yachts

Dörries Yachts reveals first details of 115m concept Zephyr

German shipyard Dörries Yachts has released the first details of a 115.2-metre concept known as Zephyr. Named after the Greek for "west wind", Zephyr is for sale with full details to be revealed at the 2024 Monaco Yacht Show .

The superyacht has been designed in collaboration with British studio H2 Yacht Design and is characterised by curved exterior lines punctuated by a dramatic, sharply tapered bow. All aft decks have been backed by glass balustrades for far-reaching ocean views.

Specifications are yet to be confirmed but renderings reveal a host of amenities, including an aft deck swimming pool flanked by sunbeds. A lounge area with sit-up bar is positioned nearby and fully shaded by the upper deck overhang. Sweeping staircases on either side of the aft deck lead down to the swim platform, which has been arranged with sunloungers.

Meanwhile, the sundeck is arranged with a dip pool, minimalist sunpads and a lounge space with U-shaped, mirrored sofas. Other highlights include an upper deck Jacuzzi and several al fresco dining and lounging options positioned across Zephyr's four decks.

According to BOATPro , the largest build that Dörries Yachts currently has under construction is the 113.5-metre Project Arwen. The shipyard released the first renderings of the superyacht to BOAT International earlier this year.

Is Zephyr Australia's oldest yacht?

A registration project run by the National Maritime Museum may have confirmed the seniority of a sturdy South Australian cutter. Phoenix Arrien reports:

WE KNOW they certainly don’t make ‘em like they used to, but how long have they been making the yachts we now treasure as classics’ The newly launched Australian Historic Vessel Register, a clearing house for information about local boats built before 1970 is helping to answer that question. On current information, they believe the honour of being recognised as 'Australia's oldest yacht' might belong to Zephyr, a sturdy gaff cutter launched in 1873.

The historic yacht certainly has a rich and varied past. She is currently in superb condition – a tribute to 19th Century craftsmanship and the dedication and pride of 21st Century classic enthusiasts.

Zephyr's first owner was a notable identity in the South Australian colony, Supreme Court Judge Sir William Henry Bundy. ‘The Judge’, who was was also a state MP, commissioned Zephyr as a sea-going cutter of 22 tons. He wanted a boat in which “three or four companions could be comfortably entertained”. She was designed by William Taylor and built in huon pine by Robert Playfair in Adelaide. Another local craftsman, William Russell, made the sails.

The Judge learned to sail on Zephyr and became one of Australia’s great cruising yachtsmen, eventually writing a book of his sailing memories, including his special fondness for Zephyr. The book also featured Port Lincoln and the town subsequently became the terminus for South Australia’s largest annual yachting event, the Adelaide – Port Lincoln Week. At the time of launching, the Adelaide Observer newspaper described Zephyr as having “Huon pine for planking and Kauri Pine for the deck, elm bent timbers and gum floors every four feet of her length. Cemented inside as high as the light water-line ‘ copper and brass are the only metals used ‘ the hull had a great rise of floor and a fine entry, but was filled out above the waterline to provide buoyancy in heavy seas. The upright stem and the long overhanging taffrail and square stern were thoroughly approved of in a yacht of this size, although some sailors despised the square stern.”

The newspaper reported Zephyr’s launch at Port Adelaide on 25 August 1873 in great detail. “There were fair ladies and brave men present – the horny handed sons of toil, members of Parliament and members of the press, sea captains in full commission and sea captains who had long given up the idea.

“The band played 'Rule Britannia'. The yacht lay on her ways like a lady adorned for a ball. Garlands and wreaths of flowers decorated each end. In our colony matters of this kind should be treated as they really deserve.”

To have a boat still afloat that began its life in such a splendid way is a treasure of yachting history.

Bundy, who was also the Commodore of the yacht club, responded to the toasts by saying that there was no sport dearer to his heart. “The recreation of yachting is a health-giving one and therefore to be greatly preferred to the many amusements in the pursuit of which night was often turned into day.” This sentiment was greeted by “prolonged cheering”.

The Judge cruised and raced Zephyr until selling her to a Mr R. Honey who succeeded him as Commodore of the SAYC in 1885. Honey put the vessel into racing trim by adding more lead to her keel and increasing the sail area.

By 1893 Zephyr’s racing days were over and she was registered as a fishing boat. This was the toughest part of her career. For the better part of a century she worked the treacherous waters around Kangaroo Island. From 1902 the yacht was owned by William Russell, her original sailmaker. Then records of her ownership peter out until the mid 1980’s when Zephyr turned up in Hobart.

Her current owner, James Madigan, fell in love with the cutter in 1993 and she currently lives in Victoria’s Melbourne Docklands. James lives in America, but Melbourne locals Stephen Majernik and Vic O’Driscol, along with a band of enthusiasts, sail and care for the boat. They enjoy the support of Melbourne Docklands and Greg Blunt from C. Blunt Boat Builders.

Majernik recently sailed Zephr on a four week circumnavigation of Tasmania including a visit to the Australian Wooden Boat Festival in Hobart. He explains that the yacht is not in its original condition.

“Zephyr has been through a few different lives. She has been run aground, replanked, refastened and had her decks raised. She used to have a top mast and now has a pole mast. The bowsprit is shorter but the keel is original. When the vessel was originally built she looked a bit different, so the old girl has had a few facelifts.

The owner has considered restoring her to the original sail plan and rigging, but this would be an expensive project.

The claim that Zephyr is Australia's 'oldest' yacht is often challenged. David Payne, who runs the historic register for the National Maritime Museum, believes that a handful of other craft are within reach, including Akarana, a cutter that raced in the Australian Centennial races of 1888. (That yacht can be seen at the Museum's marina in Sydney.)

‘I am not aware of any other boat older then Zephyr, though I am hoping that the new Australian Register of Historic Vessels (ARHV) will confirm this by attracting registrations for any older boat from, say, somewhere like Tasmania.

‘The oldest boat on the Historic Register is currently the Port Fairy Life Boat dating from 1857. It was manned by local fisherman and used to help sailors in trouble in the treacherous waters off the western Victorian coast.’

Another yacht that has emerged as a contender for the honour of being our oldest yacht is Kelpie, reputedly designed and built in 1884. ‘It’s a deep keel gaff cutter and it is old,’ confirms Payne. ‘Kelpie is often claimed to be a Fife design and to have been launched in 1884, then stored and relaunched in 1893 or thereabouts. But a newspaper article I came across from the period suggests it was designed and built in Sydney, and launched in 1893.

So Zephyr certainly seems to have a strong claim on being the oldest. These veteran yachts provide a framework for understanding our modern vessels, as well as a direct connection to this history of Australia's yachting culture. We should be glad that their sails are still catching the breeze, after more than 100 years.

The Zephyr team would welcome any additional information about her history and are also seeking support to help keep her ‘afloat’. Those in a position to help should contact Stephen on 0425 797 480 or email to [email protected]

Is your yacht more than 35 years old, a rare or significant vessel, have important connections with a community, significant people or events’

The Australian National Maritime Museum, in association with the Sydney Heritage Fleet, is encouraging the owners of old boats to register on the ‘Australian Register of Historic Vessels'. This scheme will help conserve our maritime heritage by assembling a broad The Register is available as a free digital database on the Australian National Maritime Museum’s website at www.anmm.gov.au/arhv.

The Register already lists more than 100 vessels, ranging from an early Australian surfboard and an indigenous one-person fishing raft to a Murray River paddle steamer, a Newcastle collier and a former Royal Australian Navy destroyer.

Statue of Liberty Express - Zephyr Yacht Harbor Cruise

Cruise around downtown Manhattan on the comfortable Zephyr Yacht

Perhaps the most comfortable ship offering public sightseeing tours, the Statue of Liberty Express aboard the Zephyr Yacht offers a great one-hour tour of the New York Harbor . The Zephyr Yacht features comfortable seating both inside and out and a knowledgeable tour guide provides live commentary throughout the cruise. You'll also get a close-up view of the Statue of Liberty during the tour.

About Circle Line Downtown's Zephyr Yacht Harbor Cruise

Riding aboard the Zephyr Yacht is a great way to enjoy the New York Harbor, as well as to learn about New York City and get a sense of the City's geography and layout. The one-hour tour travels southwest from South Street Seaport to the World Financial Center and back, passing underneath the Brooklyn Bridge before returning to the Pier.

A live tour guide narrates throughout much of the tour through the ship's PA system, pointing out various attractions and landmarks, sharing New York City's rich history and even offering to give visitors tips and answer questions once the tour is complete. The Zephyr holds up to 600 passengers, has indoor and outdoor decks, two snack and beverage bars, very clean bathrooms and comfortable, plush seating. The Statue of Liberty Express sightseeing cruise is probably the best of the many one-hour cruises around Manhattan.

Helpful Tips for Circle Line Downtown's Zephyr Yacht Harbor Cruise

  • Snacks and drinks (including a full bar) are available for sale on the boat.
  • Well maintained bathrooms are located on the main floor of the Zephyr.
  • Pictures are best taken from the upper decks, but you can best hear the narration from inside.
  • Bring a sweater or jacket along for the ride. Even when the weather is warm, it will be breezy on deck and the air conditioning inside can make you chilly too.
  • Don't forget your sunblock -- the breeze can make you feel deceivingly cool, but you can still get burned.

Attractions You'll See On The Cruise

  • Downtown Manhattan Skyline
  • Ellis Island
  • Statue of Liberty
  • Empire State Building
  • Brooklyn Bridge

  • If you want to be sure of availability for a particular cruise, you can order tickets in advance by through their website . There is a $1 ticketing fee for tickets booked online, but that's a small price to pay to avoid disappointment. This is especially true during the summer and other peak travel times. You'll want to arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled departure even if you buy your ticket in advance.
