ABOARD THE USS LABOON IN THE RED SEA (AP) — Yemen’s Houthi rebels launched a boat-borne bomb attack against a commercial ship in the Red Sea on Wednesday, authorities said, the latest escalation despite a U.S.-led campaign trying to protect the vital waterway.
The use of a boat loaded with explosives raised the specter of 2000’s USS Cole attack, a suicide assault by al-Qaida on the warship when it was at port in Aden, killing 17 on board. Associated Press journalists saw the Cole in the Red Sea on Wednesday, now taking part in the U.S. campaign while visiting one of her sister ships, the USS Laboon.
Yemen’s military spokesman Brig. Gen. Yahya Saree claimed responsibility for the attack, identifying the vessel targeted as the Liberian-flagged, Greek-owned bulk carrier Tutor. He described the attack as using a “drone boat,” as well as drones and ballistic missiles.
In a warning to shippers, the British military’s United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations center described the vessel as being hit in its stern by a small white craft southwest of the Houthi-controlled port city of Hodeida.
The captain “reports the vessel is taking on water, and not under command of the crew,” the UKMTO said. He also “reports the vessel was hit for a second time by an unknown airborne projectile.”
The U.S. military’s Central Command also acknowledged the attack, saying the Tutor “most recently docked in Russia.”
“The impact of the (drone boat) caused severe flooding and damage to the engine room,” it added.
The U.S. military separately destroyed three anti-ship cruise missile launchers in Houthi-held Yemen, as well as one rebel drone over the Red Sea. The Houthis launched two anti-ship ballistic missiles over the Red Sea, but they caused no damage, Central Command said.
The Houthis, who seized Yemen’s capital nearly a decade ago and have been fighting a Saudi-led coalition since shortly after, have been targeting shipping throughout the Red Sea corridor over the Israel-Hamas war in the Gaza Strip.
They say the attacks are aimed at stopping the war and supporting the Palestinians, though the attacks often target vessels that have nothing to do with the conflict .
The war in Gaza has killed more than 36,000 Palestinians there, while hundreds of others have been killed in Israeli operations in the West Bank. It began after Hamas-led militants attacked Israel on Oct. 7, killing about 1,200 people and taking around 250 hostage.
The Houthis have launched more than 50 attacks on shipping, killed three sailors, seized one vessel and sunk another since November, according to the U.S. Maritime Administration. A U.S.-led airstrike campaign has targeted the Houthis since January, with a series of strikes May 30 killing at least 16 people and wounding 42 others, the rebels say.
Associated Press journalists on an embark with the U.S. Navy were interviewing Cmdr. Eric Blomberg, the commanding officer of the Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer Laboon, when the alert came in on the attack. Blomberg took multiple calls from sailors on board the vessel, giving updates on the apparent attack.
The Laboon is one of the destroyers accompanying the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower aircraft carrier and both has shot down Houthi fire and escorted vessels through the region. Though Blomberg and others stressed they were still investigating the attack, he said it appeared the vessel targeted had nothing to do with the Israel-Hamas war.
The Houthis “hit ships that are completely not associated or tied to the U.S. or Israel at all,” Blomberg said.
“These are just innocent merchant sailors carrying goods through the Red Sea, trying to get it through the least-expensive route, and they’re paying for it,” he said.
Femme, african art show curated by cole harrell, closes june 30.
Anthropomorphic figure of Nkisi, Bwende artist, D.R. Congo, Wood, pigment, beads, textile, iron ... [+] alloy, organic material
Cole Harrell has been dealing Sub-Saharan African art for more than a decade...but you might not guess it. As an openly gay member of the New York social scene, Harrell leads a lifestyle as stunning and curated as his bespoke exhibitions. This spring, in tandem with Mother's Day, Harrell held an event at his Chelsea penthouse that boldly celebrated the sacred feminine through African masterpieces, aptly titled "FEMME". Just 13 masks and figures from the Congo and Yoruba tribe will remain on show until June 30th, essential viewing for those interested in the rich history of Black Art.
"African sculptors have famously venerated the female form in their work, so it seemed a natural choice," Harrell explains.
"Through their artistry, classical African sculptors sought to honor the divine feminine in all her manifestations," the press release begins, "From the nurturing mother to the fierce warrior; from the wise elder to the playful maiden. At the heart of FEMME lies a celebration of the sacred mysteries of womanhood — the primal forces of creation and destruction, nurturing and protection, birth and rebirth."
Harrell’s selection depicts motherhood, healing, and powerful journeys along the fault lines of fertility, from sisterhood of community to the deification of the individual. Objects celebrating fertility include a Nkisi figure from the Bwende culture in Democratic Republic of Congo, a Luba-Zela kihona stool, a Dan gunyege mask, and a d'mba Yamban mask from Guinea, by a Baga sculptor.

A catalogue essay by Aurore Mariani explains the d’mba goddess as one of generosity. Literally transliterated as the "good spirit", her supple, milk-filled form is believed to express a Baga beauty ideal, and thus, in her fertility, the community’s survival in abundant harvests during sacrifices and offerings for prosperity.

Speaking of the Baga figure, Mariani summizes: “She is the Mother of mothers in all her splendor and beauty.”
The d'mba have been known in the West since the 17th century, with items from their tradition historically held in France. Mariani’s essay explores the history of the people, explaining how migration to Guinea underscored the importance of a female anchor.

[+] Baga were a people from Guinea whose chief Female deity was the "Nimba" (more accurately known in Baga language as d'mba Yambon) an ancestor, primordial mother type spirit. This image is one of the rare photo-documented dances of a nimba mask.
Citing the Temne people, she translates, “the world was created by the spirit of the woman, she is the origin of life” (Lamp, 1982, p.244-283).
“Thus, wearing the mask was synonymous with carrying life,” she writes, “To the point that when giving birth, according to Sayers (1927: 111) women would say ‘I po’ sara a-ron," which literally translates to "I have carried the mask on my head.’”
An accompanying dance for ceremonies evolved slowly, as few examples were made to protect the sanctity of the object.
Picasso owned a similar mask from the Baga region, purchased in 1920, which is said to have inspired his depictions of Marie-Therese.

Harrell's selection is one of four in its exact style, originally owned by a Swiss collector named Emil Storrer who acquired it in its original territory sometime in the 1950s. One of his acquisitions is currently at the Kreeger Museum in Washington, D.C., and another the Rietberg Museum in his home city of Zürich.
While FEMME indisputably honors all things woman, Harrell was certain to acknowledge the "often fluid nature of gender as it relates to classical African sculpture," citing a Nigerian scepter of Eshu, the benevolent Yoruba messenger from the heavens and a trickster god. Harrell shared that Eshu is traditionally presented as male, requiring constant appeasement to continue his conveying of sacrifices and divining the future. While Eshu is almost always depicted as male, Harrell selected a rare sculpture presenting the deity as female, with full breasts and an infant carried on the back.

What is important here is that Eshu is almost always depicted as a Male God, with phallic virility and fertility/ creation being one of his powers/ attributes. Harrel's example is a very rare depiction with exposed breasts and carrying a child.
Harrell cited scholar Ayodele Ogundipe, noting Eshu is ultimately genderless, embodying both male and female traits. "Eshu’s indeterminacy sits at the heart of Yoruba hermeneutics, an approach to truth that leaves meaning open-ended and unresolved," Ogundipe writes. "Eshu’s presence at the gates of consciousness is essentially queer."

As at once a pioneer and a veteran in the niche African art space, Harrell has proven consistency and expertise as a dealer throughout his career. He coined the phrase, "Triple A: Age, Authenticity, Aesthetics," when seeking out new items, and is careful to abide by the contemporary export laws in African nations — he visits, but not to acquire. He insists all works under his purview must have provenance dating back to at least 1970.
Ultimately, Harrell is as passionate about intention as he is art history, evidenced with FEMME and other exceptional exhibitions he has hosted, such as Mastering Worlds; Exploring Space and Scale in Tribal and Asiatic Art, 2015, which paired classical African miniature sculpture with traditional Japanese Bonsai, and Past is Prologue, an annual series launched in partnership with Montague Contemporary, New York in 2022, in which Classical African art is dialogue with contemporary artists in diaspora. He is very active at the Frick Collection through his partner, internationally esteemed arbitration lawyer and museum board member, Tai Heng-Cheng.

Harrell deftly summarized the history of the field, from its colonial beginnings with 19th century collectors hungering for ethnographic exotica, to the infusion of Western respect that came with the radical shift of aesthetics in 20th century European Modern Art.
"Fortunately, today, African Art is regarded much more widely as Fine Art, and a category all its own," he clarified. "It is also worth noting that I am seeing more collectors and institutions in Africa and Asia concerned with African Art than ever before. Whereas previously, an object's ritual use was often the primary focus, audiences are now as concerned with the artist, just as they would be with Western art."
With this show, Harrell invites viewers not only to celebrate the feminine on view, but to look beyond to the world around them for its reverence, and inevitably, into themselves. It is essential viewing for those who need to find the feminine in their lives, and to appreciate the power of African aesthetic the world over.
The author and Cole Harrell have been friends for many years.

A monthly publication about conservation in Missouri. Started in 1938, the printed magazine is free to residents of Missouri.
St. CHARLES, Mo.— The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) will open the 2024 registration for hunting blind sites on the Upper Mississippi Conservation Area (UMCA) restricted waterfowl hunting zone from June 17-June 30. All blind site draws will be conducted electronically. The random electronic drawing to award the blind sites will be held July 2. After the drawing is performed, successful applicants will be notified via email. Applicants may only be assigned to one blind site. From July 3-14, those applicants may choose up to three co-registrants to occupy the blind site with them.
All applicants need to obtain proper hunting permits, a conservation ID number, an email address, and a phone number to register. In addition:
Should any blind sites be relinquished after the initial drawing, a redraw registration period will open Aug. 5-18, with the redraw occurring Aug. 20. Co-registration period will then be Aug. 21-31.
Hunters should note that this will be the last blind drawing for the UMCA. Starting with the 2026 waterfowl hunting season, recently adopted regulation changes call for the blind drawing system to be discontinued and the UMCA to transition to open pool hunting only at that time. As a result of this change, as of 2026 the restricted portion of the UMCA will follow statewide regulations for open pool hunting regarding decoys and blinds. Boat blinds and temporary blinds will still be allowed.
For more information, call the Upper Mississippi Conservation Area at 573-898-5905, or the MDC St. Louis Regional Office at 636-441-4554.

Demi Moore ‘s new film, the feminist body horror “ The Substance ,” sees her bare it all, with several scenes featuring full nudity. At the Cannes Film Festival press conference for the film on Monday, the 61-year-old actor discussed the “vulnerable experience.”
“Going into it, it was really spelled out — the level of vulnerability and rawness that was really required to tell the story,” Moore said. “And it was a very vulnerable experience and just required a lot of sensitivity and a lot of conversation about what we were trying to accomplish.”
Xbox dominated summer game fest — but game pass remains tricky bet, why sofia vergara’s white dress in ‘griselda’ amplifies her transformation into a ruthless drug lord, popular on variety.
“I had someone who was a great partner who I felt very safe with. We obviously were quite close — naked — and we also got a lot of levity in those moments at how absurd those certain situations were,” she said. “But ultimately. it’s just about really directing your communication and mutual trust.”
As the film progresses, Moore becomes horribly disfigured thanks to the abuse her other half Qualley is inflicting on her. By the film’s last act, she quite resembles Anjelica Huston from the 1990 film “The Witches,” after she transforms into a humpback abomination.
Dennis Quaid also stars in the film as an “asshole,” as he described his character during the presser. The late Ray Liotta was meant to have the role before his passing in May 2022, and Quaid dedicated his performance to him.
“In my heart, I dedicated this role to Ray Liotta, who was set to play it,” Quaid said. “It was this week, two years ago that he passed, so I’d like to remember him. He was such an incredible actor.”
Cannes went wild for “The Substance” at its premiere on Sunday night, giving the film an 11-minute standing ovation , the longest of the fest so far.
In an interview with Variety , the French director discussed the film’s feminist themes, saying that body horror is “the perfect vehicle to express the violence all these women’s issues are about.”
With an undercurrent of #MeToo at this year’s festival as the movement grows in France, Fargeat hopes the film will shine even more light on the issue. “It’s a little stone in the huge wall we still have to build regarding this issue, and to be honest, I hope my film will also be one of the stones of that wall. That’s really what I intended to do with it.”

Mr. Stangler is a journalist based in France who writes about its politics and culture.
Whatever happens next, it’ll go down as one of the wildest gambles in modern French history. President Emmanuel Macron’s decision to dissolve the National Assembly and hold snap legislative elections on June 30 and July 7 has given the far right its best shot at governing France for the first time since the Vichy regime of World War II.
The move stunned the country’s political class, including high-ranking Macronists from whom the president’s plans were reportedly heavily guarded . And for much of France, the decision remains perplexing. For those with the most to lose from the far right in power — above all, immigrants and the descendants of recent immigrants — the news is downright terrifying. Mr. Macron, who has a habit of disregarding conventional wisdom, will surely hope the move redounds to his benefit. But make no mistake: France is in danger.
In many respects, Mr. Macron’s domestic agenda was already in crisis. Since the 2022 legislative elections denied his electoral alliance a majority in the National Assembly, his coalition has been forced to seek support from other parties, namely the right-wing Republicans. At times, the government bypassed Parliament altogether. But for the bulk of its work, the administration was dependent on the Republicans’ backing.
The historic triumph of Marine Le Pen’s National Rally in Sunday’s elections for the European Parliament — in which her party took 31 percent of the vote, more than double that of the president’s party — threatened this arrangement. Without a dissolution of the National Assembly, the National Rally would have continued to ramp up pressure on the Republicans, aiming to woo conservative voters and punish Republican leaders for their tacit support of the president. The prospect of a lame-duck presidency would have only grown.
The new elections are an attempt to salvage Mr. Macron’s second term. And he may genuinely believe voters will deliver him a fresh parliamentary majority, hoping his base of old and wealthy voters will once again show up to the polls in much greater numbers than the young and working-class voters who are less sympathetic to his presidency. Lingering animosity among various left-wing parties and a generalized fear of the far right coming to power could also play in his favor.
But there is a more cynical way of viewing Mr. Macron’s wager. As France’s far right continues to gain traction — its various obsessions propelled by a newly sympathetic media landscape and, in some cases, even inspiring pieces of legislation — it is increasingly favored to win the 2027 presidential election. Against this backdrop, Mr. Macron’s tactic can also be seen as an effort to derail the National Rally’s march to the Élysée Palace by, counterintuitively, forcing the party to govern.
In other words, the move could be a last-ditch bid to demystify the party’s anti-establishment allure by bringing it into the messy real world of policymaking, probably as part of a wider coalition. Under this theory, even the prospects of the National Rally securing an absolute majority and naming a prime minister of its own can be seen as a kind of worthy sacrifice: better to have Prime Minister Jordan Bardella , the rising star of the National Rally, than President Le Pen.
Such a scenario is far from unlikely, as there is ample reason to believe Mr. Macron’s party will suffer at the polls this summer. For one, he is extremely unpopular. Much of the country views him as an out-of-touch leader who favors the interests of the wealthy, and the past two years have not helped his case. After a tempestuous first term in office, he kicked off his second by ramming through a fiercely contested rise in the retirement age and clamping down on unemployment benefits . Today his approval ratings hover around 30 percent , even lower than President Biden’s.
What’s more, France’s so-called republican front — the tradition of voters and parties joining forces to support whichever candidates take on the far right — is in its death throes. Much of the responsibility lies with Mr. Macron. He and his allies opted not to endorse left-wing candidates en masse against the National Rally in the last legislative elections, making it far less likely that left-wing voters will turn out for Macronists this time around. His government has cracked down on civil liberties , smeared progressives and passed an immigration bill that Ms. Le Pen cheered as an “ideological victory.”
Now he appears willing to accept the possibility of handing over the keys of government to a party founded by a former Waffen SS section officer and a colonial nostalgist who infamously downplayed the Holocaust. Many voters may wonder: What’s the point of a republican front if the president has already decided the republic can accommodate the far right? On Tuesday the leader of the Republicans, Éric Ciotti, seemed to come to an answer when he called for an alliance with the National Rally.
Mr. Ciotti was widely rebuked and expelled from the party, but he is swimming with the tide. The National Rally is expected to win more votes than any other party. In addition to its various victories in the battleground of ideas, the party showed on Sunday that it is more than capable of turning out its base in high-stakes elections. It may also benefit from a potential alliance with Reconquest, an even more extreme party that rails against the ravages of wokism and openly embraces the “great replacement” conspiracy theory.
But there is a wild card. While Mr. Macron’s strategy appeared to rule out the possibility that France’s four major left-wing parties would join forces, they announced within 24 hours their intention to do just that. The parties aim to run single candidates in each legislative district under the banner of a new Popular Front , a nod to the 1936 electoral alliance that was forged amid fears of mounting fascism.
The most recent legislative elections demonstrated the strength of the French left when it unites . In 2022 a similar alliance won more seats than the National Rally and defeated Mr. Macron’s coalition in scores of districts . This time around, left-wing parties may also benefit from their more uncompromising opposition to Ms. Le Pen and Mr. Bardella. A strong showing by the left could alter the complexion of the campaign. At the very least, the far right can expect no simple procession to power.
In 2017 Mr. Macron, then a candidate, boldly announced his intent to “ eradicate the anger ” fueling support for the National Rally. Seven years later, it appears safe to say he has failed. He may well be remembered for a very different reason: not as a principled opponent of the far right, but as a reckless enabler in chief.
