Corinthian Yacht Club

The Corinthian was founded in 1886 by a group of yachtsmen who wanted to promote amateur small boat yachting in the San Francisco Bay Area. The word "Corinthian" is taken in the sailing world to mean "amateur" and is derived from the Corinthian games in ancient Greece, contemporary to the Olympic games and took place on the isthmus of Corinth. The Corinthian founded such popular traditions as Opening Day on the Bay, the Blessing of the Fleet, and the Midwinter races.

The club is housed in a Colonial Revival building located across San Francisco Bay in Tiburon with a breathtaking panoramic view of the city by the bay.

YACHTS GETTING READY. The Opening of the Season Is Now Close at Hand Water Front Notes.

Nearly all the yachts at Tiburon are being put in readiness for the opening of the next racing season. The Clara is getting new topsides and her mast has been cut down four feet. The Freda is having her masts and spars scraped and at the same time is getting a thorough overhauling. The Cisne is on the ways and the Rover is already overhauled and is again in commission Sunday next will see several of the boats on the bay again.

Corinthian The Corinthian Yacht Club opened the season of 1892 with a reception at Sausalito yesterday. Over 400 people attended. A lunch was served during the day and the opening was on the whole a big success. Today the yachts will make a cruise on the bay. Sunday, August 4, 1907, The San Francisco Call Corinthian Yacht Discovery Defends Perpetual Cup Corinthian yacht club sloop Discovery , built seven years ago Captain John E. McFarlane, a carpenter, which ran away from the southern California yacht Valkyrie yesterday in a race for the perpetual challenge cup. The Valkyrie is the latest creation of the famous naval constructor of Boston. By. R. A. Smyth Captain John E. McFarlane's sloop Discovery defended the Perpetual challenge cup in gallant style for the Corinthian club yesterday; when it fairly ran away from the Valkyrie , the representative of the South Coast yacht club of southern California, and led across the line by 22 minutes and 6 seconds, over a course estimated at 14 miles. The challenger seemed outclassed in every point of sailing, and yet the crew and the experts who watched the race from Meiggs wharf could not account for its poor showing. It was on the second beat to windward that the Discovery made, its sensational gain and outfooted the southern yacht in such a manner that it gained 22 minutes and 55 seconds. Old yachtsmen found it impossible to explain the disappointing showing of the visitor at this stage of the race except that it was caught in some adverse current, which brought it almost to a standstill. The Golden Gate. 1878.

The strangest part of it was, however, that the big fleet of pleasure craft which accompanied the two racers ran completely away from the Valkyrie . The latter was left so far behind that the spectators on Meiggs wharf lost sight of it entirely and centered their attention on another boat which was close to the Discovery off Black point and which was made out to be the visitor. All this time the Valkyrie was off Alcatraz and making but slow headway.

The vagaries of yacht building are shown when it is told that the Discovery was designed and built by Captain McFarlane seven years ago while the Valkyrie is the latest creation of Crown-Inshield, the famous naval constructor of Boston. Captain McFarlane is a carpenter by trade and he and his brothers are enthusiastic yachtsmen. The Discovery made a beautiful picture as it sailed down to the finish, accompanied by a big fleet of pleasure craft. As soon as Captain McFarlane rounded the Presidio buoy for the second time, he set every stitch of canvas he had. This included, in addition to his working sails, a gaff topsail, spinnaker and watersail, and all were drawing well. McFarlane got every ounce out of his boat from start to finish and was complimented on all sides for his masterly work.

The Discovery had the best of the start and Captain McFarlane took what is known as the shore course along the Presidio, making short tacks. The Valkyrie stood out in the channel on the port tack straight for Sausalito to catch the last of the ebb tide. The southern skipper did not profit by this as the Discovery rounded the buoy 4 minutes and 19 seconds ahead of him. The southern California boat picked up a little on the reach to the mark at Southampton shoal, gaining 57 seconds. This was the only gain made during the progress of the race by the visitor.

The only mishap during the race was just as the Valkyrie was crossing the finish line when its spinnaker was carried away. The Discovery finished so far ahead that it sailed back over the course and accompanied its rival back over the line. The most plausible explanation of the crushing defeat of the visitor is that it is a light weather boat and the 20 mile breeze which was blowing yesterday was too much for it. This placed its crew at a disadvantage also, as they were not accustomed to handling their boat in the sea which was kicked up. They were not accustomed to conditions prevailing in this bay and they did not get all the pace out of their boat. As one old salt expressed it: "You can't sail a boat in this bay with the sail over the cockpit."

It is hoped the Valkyrie will take part in the special race for the 25-footers today over the same course, as the experience gained by the southern yachtsmen yesterday should enable them to make a better showing.

The race held yesterday is, the blue ribbon event of the yachtsmen's year and drew a large crowd of-spectators both on land and water. Commodore Brickell of the Corinthian club, was out in the Speedwell as the guest of Tom Jennings. W. C Morrow of the San Francisco yacht club and some friends followed the yachts in a launch.

Harry Goodall was out on his steam yacht, the Lucero , with a party of friends. I. Gutte sailed his smart schooner, Chispa , and the schooner Lady Ada was also much in evidence during the race. The Harpoon and Ruby were also in the big fleet of pleasure craft which helped make up yachting picture.

The crew of the winning Corinthian boat consisted of Captain John E. McFarlane, Alexander McFarlane, Jack Stack, Ed Hamberge and Syd Marshall. There was a celebration at the- Corinthian clubhouse at Tiburon last night in honor of the occasion. The club lost the cup to the San Francisco yacht club in 1902 and retained it two years later. It defended the trophy successfully the following year. There was no race last year owing to the fire.

The defeat of the Valkyrie by 22 minutes and 6 seconds was the second most decisive defeat in all the history of the race. Thewless best the Gadder in 1900 by 25 minutes and 30 seconds, which was the most crushing defeat in the history of the race. The Presto was by a margin of 46 6-10 seconds over the Helen in 1901, while the Corinthian best the Challenger by 41 seconds in 1904.

A small Dinghy will do! Stuffy "Yachties" need not apply... Wow, what a great club! I have been a member of the Corinthian for about three years now and have enjoyed every moment of my membership. The Corinthian is lively and Fun! There are so many activities that take place. The club has so many great social events. Whether taking sailing lessons, or attending the mid winter regattas the club has never let me down! The rear deck has breathtaking views of the city and is a great place to "unwind' with a glass of chilled wine. The best part of the Corinthian is that I don't need to own a luxury liner to enjoy my beautiful club on the waters edge. The most surprising aspect of this gorgeous club is that the monthly dues are about the same as an expensive fitness club in the city. Where else can you enjoy a beautiful piece of oceanfront property for such an incredible price? Unlike most yacht clubs the Corinthian does not discriminate in their acceptance of new members. If you do not own a boat you can join as a "social member" and enjoy the company of interesting people from all over the world. The atmosphere is casual and relaxed without the pretense of "old money." If you are looking for a fun social scene The Corinthian Club is the place.

Corinthian Yacht Club was the reception site for our wedding in May 2013. The breathtaking view and historic charm of CYC drew us into choosing the site for our reception. But it is the amazing staff that earns the 5 stars for giving us our dream reception! Amanda, John, and Clark worked endlessly with us and our parents, incorporating our ideas and giving helpful guidance/suggestions where needed. Prior to booking CYC, I debated if I needed to hire a wedding planner. After meeting with Amanda, I was confident that she would a terrific on-site coordinator as her attention to detail and warm personality made her easy to collaborate with. Leading up to the wedding, we had several meetings on-site with CYC and too many phone calls/emails to count! From the food tasting to the walkthrough, CYC's staff always guided us through each decision we made and was quick to answer any questions we had. They were particularly helpful with answering questions to both my parents and my husband's parents, as both sets were involved in the planning process. I was particularly impressed with how respectful and contentious they were to keep within our wedding budget, always informing of us of all the options we had before moving forward with a decision. For the wedding day itself, our reception was AMAZING. As a bride, I spent hours pouring my heart into the decorations and details for the reception. Walking into the room and seeing it all perfectly come to life is something I will always remember! The food, my goodness, the food! The steak and salmon entrees we chose, as well as the variety of appetizers, tasted like meals from a 5 star restaurant. Compliments to their chef Joe, who is a newer addition and really livened up the menu! We had many out-of-state guests who could not stop raving about the how beautiful CYC was, how delicious the food was, and what a perfect evening we had. There are a lot of high expectations leading up to a wedding, and CYC lived up to all of ours and more to make our dream reception come true! The CYC staff genuinely cared about giving us our perfect reception and it certainly showed through on our big day. If you are considering a wedding in Tiburon, this place is a MUST.

We had a party here recently as a "celebration of life" for my mother. It was incredible. We did drinks and apps for an hour before and after the speeches. Everything was perfect. The service was seamless and the snacks (which the club kindly helped to recommend) were a hit. The bar was able to keep up with the 250+ guests we had so everyone was happy. Everyone was so impressed with the event and the venue. There really is no better setting for any special occasion. The views are amazing. AMAZING. And the ballroom, bar, sunroom, patio combo make the space very user friendly. The staff helped with every detail of planning including menus, room layout (they nailed it!) as well as all the little things like AV set-up and linen colors. They helped work and re-work the plan so that it fit our budget (and they do a good job or predicting and pre-disclosing costs). Thanks John, Clark, and Amanda! I certainly don't wish to lose another loved one, but I would love another excuse to have a party here. Birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, you name it. I'll be hosting them all at the CYC!

We had our wedding reception at the Corinthian Yacht Club in May, and everything was amazing...from Leila's attention to detail to the food and set up. They made the process VERY relaxed, which we greatly appreciated. The view is unbeatable, and the food (especially the crab cakes made to order!) is amazing -- definitely not your typical "wedding food" experience. We were so happy with everything they did for us. They're just top-notch all the way around. We're sad to not have an "excuse" to go back anymore! If you're looking for a fabulous wedding reception venue with spectacular views of SF, look no further.

We hosted a reception here for 150 people, and the food and drink was excellent--they were even able to accommodate the needs of our few Vegan guests. As well, they were completely easy about our camouflaging some of the masculine decor with tulle and flowers. Again, across the board--the appetizers and main course(s) were excellent, and they were heavy on waitstaff, so much so that a few people's dinners were swept away a little too soon. It is not an easy feat to supply consistently delicious food to a large group--we had a party at the top hotel in SF, and the food was nowhere as consistent or tasty. Oh, yes, the view is quite lovely, and the outdoor balcony very nice.

It is unfortunate that Yelp limits reviewers to only 5 stars because the Corinthian Club deserves more than that. We had our daughter's wedding reception there in May and everything about CYC exceeded our expectations. A beautifully maintained historic club with a panoramic view of the San Francisco skyline, a gorgeous ballroom, an inviting bar & solarium all added to a magical evening... and to top it off, perfect weather, gorgeous sunset and a full moon. But that is just the building and the real stars here are the management and staff. We had several meetings with their long time event coordinator and were concerned when she unexpectedly passed away 3 months before the event. Changing personnel midstream could have been difficult, but, John, catering manager, and Amanda, catering assistant assured us that we need not worry and they were right. They were extremely responsive to all of our questions and concerns, handled last minute changes without question, and went out of their way to make sure that this wedding reception was exactly the way we envisioned. The room was set exactly as intended down to the vintage books selected by the bride for each centerpiece being placed at the correct tables. The place settings were arranged in almost military precision and candles lit at the right moment. They helped us develop a time line that worked well through the evening. And then there was the food....they are known for their crab cakes and they were scrumptious. We had chosen salmon and filet as the two main course options and they rivaled meals you would expect in a first class restaurant. They are well equipped to do large events and spent several hours with us sampling items until we came up with the final menu. (The tasting is one of the wedding planning events not to miss - love the chef!) Their trained staff were efficient and friendly in serving the crowd. We had a few vegan guests and they were all served exactly as requested. (Amanda even found a source in SF and had a vegan cake delivered so everyone had a delicious dessert.) The happiest guest though might have been the little guy who whispered to his mom that he didn't like red sauce on his kid's meal (yes, they did a special entree for our junior guests). It was whisked away without question and replaced by buttered pasta in minutes. The server told the mom that she had kids about the same age and understood. I felt that John, Amanda and the crew truly cared as much about this event as if it were there own....a rarity in today's world. If you want a beautiful wedding reception that your guests remember as the best they have been to, then CYC is the place.

This place does it right. We were looking for a venue that allowed us to showcase our classic style. From the moment we contacted them to the final transaction. Pure class, and customer service were shown. We loved every step of the way. Our special day went off without a hitch. I was never asked a question. The selection chosen for alcohol was raved about for months after the wedding. This was the first reception our guests attended where they "enjoyed the food". If you are looking for a place to hold your reception look no further you have found it.

We had our wedding at the CYC in July. We had an incredible time - the location, views, venue, food, and staff were wonderful! However - what makes this place extra special is the catering director - Alicia Slater. We didn't have a wedding planner, and both my husband and I were very busy with other projects. Alicia made the entire planning experience very enjoyable, she guided us every step of the way with creativity, resourcefulness, and professionalism. Alicia was a mind reader and anticipated every need small and big and was proactive about options and solutions. She went above and beyond to help us have a perfect run. From the vendor recommendations - flowers, cake, photographer (we went with Susan Barton for flowers, Jill @ Branching Out Cake, Janae Shields - all were awesome), to every other detail. We had a long list of wishes: held the ceremony in the Sun Porch - seating was at capacity, with a large wedding party with many children, live ceremony music, had a secret surprise performance for our guests with 8 dancers who hid behind the curtains in the ballroom on the stage, and a large vendor table on a separate serving schedule after the live performances, among other details. Alicia made sure everything ran flawlessly, was prompt, responsive, and always available to help the other vendors. Last but not least, she is just a wonderful, warm person with a great sense of humor and an absolute pleasure to work with! Highly recommended.

Feel the Corinthian leather oooohhhh; great views, nice to tie up here, get a simple burger, and coke, then back to St. Francis Yacht Club for Tom Collins. Just one of those great locations and Yacht Clubs for Northern California.
