Gloucester 18 (Whitecap)

Gloucester 18 (Whitecap) is a 18 ′ 0 ″ / 5.5 m monohull sailboat designed by Harry R. Sindle and built by Lockley Newport Boats between 1974 and 1984.

Drawing of Gloucester 18 (Whitecap)

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

One-Design Class Profile: Buccaneer 18

A Pirate’s Boat For Me: The Endurance of the Buccaneer 18

by Airwaves writer Gretchen Croll

When looking for a great two-handed dinghy with a spinnaker, things can get a little hairy at times. That’s when you should think of the Buccaneer 18.  The Bucc’s, as they’re called, are great for beginning or experienced sailors, and is a wonderful and affordable way to stay in the game of sailboat racing.

The Buccaneer has a long and varied history as a one-design class.  First designed in 1966 by Rod Macalpine-Downie and Dick Gibbs, the boat has had many different builders over its 35 year history.  First introduced to the sailing world in 1967 at Yachting Magazine’s “One of a Kind” Regatta, the Buccaneer 18 made quite an impression and placed second behind a Thistle.  The sloop design with a hull of fiberglass reinforced plastic and spars of extruded aluminum has proven a consistent seller.  The boat was first produced by Chrysler Corporation who built the boats from 1968 to 1980 with just over 4000 boats produced.  Texas Marine Industries (TMI) took over the design in 1981, but only built the boats for a year, producing about 700 Bucc’s before another short-lived builder took over the building of the Buccaneer in 1982; Wellcraft Marine.  Wellcraft only built 250 boats from 1982-84 before Gloucester Yachts bought the mold in 1985.  Gloucester then renamed the boat the Gloucester 18, but only produced 60 vessels before it again sold the mold to Cardinal Yachts who built the boat from 1987 to 2000, still only producing about 30 boats in total.  In 2008, Nickels Boatworks bought the mold for the Buccaneer 18 and has been producing these great one-design boats ever since.

What makes the Buccaneer such a popular boat is its ease of use as both a daysailer as well as a competitive racing dinghy.  Seats in the cockpit allow for a smooth cruise and the sit-in aspect also makes the boat popular amongst dinghy racers who have graduated from racing 420’s and Vanguard 15’s, the sit-on dinghies.  One of the best aspects of the Buccaneer is its fast planing and symmetrically heeled design.  The boat, due to its relatively small waterline, planes in 8-10 knots of wind.  Due to its wide beam at the waterline, the boat, though a dinghy, eliminates the need for a trapeze.  This makes it an easier boat to sail and creates a bigger pool of capable sailors. In addition, the waterline is almost perfectly symmetrical which decreases a lot of the weather helm caused by the heel of the boat.  The high potential performance of the Buccaneer 18 allows for the skills of the helmsman and crew to be better rewarded than they would be in any other non-trapeze designed vessel.

The Buccaneer 18 is also one of the most popular boats in North America, with at least 17 active fleets around the continent.  This widespread notability allows for great racing all over the country and guarantees a great fleet at every North American Championship Regatta held, no matter the location.  In addition, the low Portsmouth yardstick numbers prove the boat to be a fast one and granting comparisons to boats like the Lightning and Finn.

Unlike many other dinghies raced not on the junior circuit, the Buccaneer uses a spinnaker as well as a jib and mainsail.  This makes the boat a great way for experienced helmsmen to improve their boat handling skills and a chance for crew to work on their ability to trim both a jib and spinnaker.  This can greatly impact the experienced sailor’s skills on big boats, allowing for a greater participation of skilled athletes in the sport.

However, the Buccaneer 18 also appeals to the beginner sailor due to its simple rigging, well balanced design and easy handling.  The roller furling jib is a big draw for the new sailor, cutting down on another sail to worry about dumping in the water when rounding the windward mark and allows for an easy transition from chute to jib at the leeward mark.  The roller furling jib is also what helps to make the Buccaneer 18 a great cruising boat, cutting down on the number of sails which need to be rolled and packed away at the end of the day.  Another tempting aspect of the Bucc for the new sailor is the ease in which the boat can be launched and hauled out of the water.  The centerboard makes the boat easy to trailer and at a relatively slim 500 lbs., all that is needed is a winch in order to lift it into the water.

Overall, the Buccaneer 18 is a great boat for a new sailors, competitive racers and daily cruises with the family.  It’s well constructed sail plan and ease of design have allowed the class to thrive for over three decades and will continue to ensure its survival far into the future.

We own hull # 753 purchased in 1974 and have raced, daysailed it more many years. The earlier boats had some manufacturing flaws, but once we had them taken care of we have enjoyed the boat. Easy to sail and we have sailed it on Lake Charlevoix in northern Michigan and other mid west lakes when we raced it. Great boat to learn with and helped me to sail eventually larger race boats. We retired it from racing now teaching my grand children the basics of a life long hobby. Hipefully it will see many more years of putr enjoyment

The sailboat, the skateboarder, and the shipwreck Gloucester was left to clean up

G LOUCESTER — It was just past 1:30 a.m. in the middle of a howling wet night on Cape Ann when two Gloucester police officers walked onto the rocky beach in Stage Fort Park.

A thousand feet to their right, in a minefield of giant boulders, a sailboat was smashed port-side against the rocks and getting pounded by the ocean.

The sailor had called 911 to say he was abandoning ship, according to police reports. But there was no sign of him on deck, and it took the officers a ton of slipping and falling on seaweed-covered rocks the size of refrigerators just to get close enough to yell.

Finally, a man emerged from the cabin, but the officers could only get within 20 yards of the boat and the wind made it impossible to hear each other. The gales and waves kept hammering the boat, and it listed further and rotated on the rocks with the man below deck, and appeared to be in danger of capsizing, according to police.

Eventually, the man launched a small life boat and gathered supplies to take with him. “The sailor kept going below deck,” Officer Clifford Alves wrote in his report. “It appeared he was looking for a life jacket, but he came out of the cabin with a skateboard and helmet.”

He never did grab a life jacket, or an oar. When he finally jumped in the raft he was adrift as police failed to reach him with a throw rope. Eventually, the waves and the incoming tide carried him safely across the boulders to shore.

The officers helped him to an ambulance, and bits of his story began to emerge.

He told them he was a homeless man from Sweden named Christian Hayden, and he was sailing to Maine. He said he was sleeping aboard the boat when it broke free from its mooring and got blown into the rocks.

Other than that, he evaded questions, according to police. “It appeared,” Alves wrote, “that he really didn’t want us to know what actually happened.”

The only thing he seemed to care about was getting out of there and finding someplace to sleep, and he soon disappeared with his skateboard into the night. That was on Nov. 7.

“We’ll never see this guy again,” said T.J. Ciarametaro, the Gloucester harbormaster, who took over the mess of what to do with the boat, the Nomadic, which was continuing to get pounded as the wind blew for three days straight. “We figured out that was a fake name — the guy from Star Wars who plays Darth Vader, Hayden Christensen.”

As for what to do with the sailboat, Ciarametaro said “Vader” had left the city with the chore of getting it out. “If you asked me the worst possible place to have a boat go aground, he nailed it.”

No boats could get anywhere near it, and they needed a large ship to drag the Nomadic painfully over the rocks, its hull wincing with the sounds of a boat that will never sail again.

The boat was hauled out to be salvaged, and upon inspection, Ciarametaro said the cabin was filthy and the hull was covered in two inches of mussels. “Wherever he was going he wasn’t going fast,” he said. “I can’t believe he could sail this thing honestly.”

Authorities also found a New Hampshire driver’s license for Clinton Piper, of Plaistow, which they’ve determined to belong to the sailor. They’ve been unable to reach Piper, but his family told police he is homeless and this was the fourth sailboat he’d destroyed in a crash or by washing up on shore.

Ciarametaro said they’ve learned the boat, which was purchased in Maine two months previous, spent time in Salem harbor weeks ago, but they know nothing else about its journey.

To tow it and salvage cost the city close to $10,000, Ciarametaro said, “but if we’d left it out there it would have been in a million pieces all over the harbor for five years.”

A voicemail left at a number listed for Piper was unreturned. The Nomadic has been cut up and scrapped.

Gloucester man ID'd as victim of Misery Island boating accident

SALEM — A 65-year-old Gloucester man died over the weekend while boating through Salem Harbor, according to authorities.

John Masiz of Gloucester was identified as the victim Tuesday by the Essex District Attorney’s Office.

The circumstances that led to his death remain an active investigation pending autopsy results from the state medical examiner’s office, the DA’s office said.

The fatality relates a boating accident that took place late Saturday afternoon within Salem Sound, where a boat was reported to be crashed on the rocks of Misery Island just after 5 p.m.

At 6:23 p.m. Saturday, Gloucester Police received a 911 call from Gloucester looking to speak with Manchester-by-the-Sea Police or Harbormaster regarding an overdue boater. The caller, who identified himself as Masiz’s brother, told police Masiz had launched his boat Talisman earlier Saturday in Danvers and was overdue to berth in Gloucester. The call was transferred to Manchester while the dispatcher contacted Coast Guard Station Gloucester which had a crew actively searching for the captain of the vessel off Beverly and Salem.

A multi-agency search located Masiz’s body, separate from the boat, several hours later, at 10:15 p.m., according to Beverly Harbormaster Peter Dickman..

The vessel was “still in gear, indicating apparent operation when it struck the island,” Dickman said. “Through eyewitness statements at a local marina, it was learned that the vessel was solo-operated when it left shore.”

Salem Harbormaster Bill McHugh said the vessel was en-route from Danversport to the inner Gloucester Harbor when “for whatever reason...the owner became separated with the vessel. The search was aided by crews from Beverly, Danvers, Manchester-by-the-Sea, Marblehead, and Salem, as well as the Massachusetts State Police, Coast Guard and Environmental Police, he said.

“The harbormasters immediately began doing a search pattern once I was able to gain access to the boat to verify there was no one on board,” McHugh said. “We treated it as a man overboard from the beginning, but needed to rule out the individual hadn’t suffered an injury and was on-board.”

Masiz was described as an experienced boater, according to McHugh, suggesting the situation was “definitely an accident.”

Talisman, a recreational vessel, later broke apart with the passing of tides and was being collected as salvage at Winter Island.

“The investigation does continue,” McHugh said. “We don’t know why the person (Masiz) was separated from the boat.”

John Masiz of Gloucester ID’d as boater dead in Little Misery Island crash

A Gloucester man was identified as the boater who died after a boat crash near Little Misery Island in Beverly on Sunday.

John Masiz, 65, was recovered from ocean waters off the North Shore, Essex County District Attorney Paul Tucker’s office confirmed to MassLive on Tuesday.

His death remains under investigation, Tucker’s office said. The cause of death remains pending on autopsy results.

The search for Masiz’ body started on Saturday when a boat was seen on the rocks near the island, according to 7News .

No foul play is believed to be involved in his death, Tucker’s office told WCVB-TV . The U.S. Coast Guard searched for Masiz by air and sea, providing aid to several local harbormasters, according to WCVB-TV.

MassLive reporter Charlie McKenna contributed to the reporting of this story.
