Keppel Bay Sailing Club

Established in 1957, Keppel Bay Sailing Club began with a group of dedicated sailors and volunteers who had a passion for sailing and for the community in which they lived. In 1961, the members agreed it was time to establish a permanent clubhouse and were offered the old skate rink and dance hall, formally located on the existing Clubhouse site.

Marina Features

Marina at Keppel Bay has 168 berths which can accommodate superyachts of up to 280 feet. The Marina features a world-class concrete pontoon system, designed and built by Bellingham Marine.

Marina at Keppel Bay sets new standards in marina construction and services. The south-end of the Marina is protected by winged attenuator pontoons which are 2 metres deep, weighing approximately 8300 kilograms per 4.0 x 3.0 unit, the north-end has a fixed breakwater. These ensure that boats berthed within the Marina remain sturdy and well-protected.

The Marina features a modern reticulated vacuum sewer pump-out system, the first in Singapore. Berths for super yachts have a dedicated pump-out connection each, while a common pump-out point near to the fuel dock services other yacht.

Marina at Keppel Bay is managed by Keppel Land Hospitality Management.

Sailing Academy

Set up with the aim of promoting leisure and professional sailing locally and regionally, KBSA is the first sailing academy in Singapore to provide courses accredited by UK-based Royal Yachting Association (RYA). The industry-leading RYA accreditation is an authoritative stamp on the international recognition of KBSA's qualified status and credentials to conduct top-grade sailing courses. Currently there are two training centres available. They are RYA training centre and clipper training centre.

Building the Future

Keppel bay sailing club moves into new era.

Established in 1957, Keppel Bay Sailing Club (KBSC) began with a small group of passionate and dedicated sailors and volunteers who wanted to share their love of the sport with the community in which they lived. Now 65 years strong, KBSC is moving into a new era with the landmark construction contract for the Keppel Bay Sailing Club and Conference Centre redevelopment recently awarded to Paynters. KBSC Commodore Francois Gallais said that the development of the Keppel Bay Sailing Club and Conference Centre is an exciting milestone in the rich history of Club. “As a not-for-profit organisation, we exist to serve our community, members and patrons. Building the new state-of-the-art facilities is only possible due to the vision of our founding members and dedication of many volunteers and staff and will help better fulfil the needs of our community for many decades to come,” he said. Mal Cochrane, KBSC General Manager said that “The redevelopment will provide something for everyone, and we’re excited that we’ll be able to offer patrons an exciting new menu in a beautiful building that has views second to none in the State. This together with flexible spaces to accommodate varying sized functions will make the Keppel Bay Sailing Club and Convention Centre a fantastic venue for the Capricorn Coast Community”.

Paynters, with over 60 years of experience in delivering high quality projects are set to commence construction works on the site at the end of March 2023, with current scheduled completion anticipated for mid-2024 Some exciting news out of Central Queensland, with Paynters officially appointed as contractor of choice to deliver the brand-new Keppel Bay Sailing Club and Conference Centre Redevelopment.

We are incredibly proud to be partnering with this iconic community venue to bring their rebuild vision to life. Jointly funded by the Australian Government and the Keppel Bay Sailing Club, the new development will be 2,800 square meters in size over 3-storeys and will encompass state-of-the-art sailing facilities, day-to-day bistro and bar, multiple function and flexible conferencing facilities, affording uninterrupted views out to Keppel Bay and surrounding islands.

With construction works set to kick off at the end of March, our local team on the ground are thrilled to be delivering this landmark venue to the Yeppoon foreshore for the Capricorn Coast community to enjoy.

KBSC Project Manager Brian Hooper has worked very closely with the Club, Livingstone Shire Council and other stakeholders, and collaborated with the consulting team with design lead by architects Arkhefield to deliver an innovative and modern design for the redevelopment. “The Club are excited that the sailing operations will be better able to facilitate state, national and international regattas that provide significant economic benefits to the region” he said.

From as early as the 13th century, the waterway in Keppel Bay had been used as a passage for ships sailing from the Straits of Malacca to the South China Sea. The first English references to the waterway appeared in the 17th century although their small number suggests infrequent use of it.

In September 1819, William Farquhar, whom Sir Stamford Raffles appointed as the first Resident of Singapore, reported that he discovered a ‘new harbour’ to the west of the settlement.

In 1848, Captain Henry Keppel discovered the sheltered, deep water harbour onboard the vessel, Meander. Repairs on the Meander were the first carried out in the harbour, known as New Harbour, where the Tanjong Pagar wharves would later be built. That name remained until 1900, when Keppel, then the Admiral, visited Singapore again. To honour him, the acting Governor, Sir Alexander Swettenham, renamed the harbour Keppel.

The development of the harbour in mid-19th century in Singapore led to the prosperity of the island.

Within Keppel Bay are some of Singapore’s oldest docks.

The island’s first graving dock, Dock No 1, as it was known, was built in 1859. Eight years later, Dock No 2 was constructed, which is today one of the water channels purposefully incorporated into the architecture of Caribbean at Keppel Bay.

Under the modernisation programme for the port in the early 1900s, the 40,000 dwt. King’s Dock, then the second largest in the world, was opened on 26 August 1913.

The 30,000 dwt Queen’s Dock was opened in 1956 and is today the water channel which lies between Caribbean at Keppel Bay and Reflections at Keppel Bay.

The story of Keppel parallels that of Singapore.

With independence in 1963, the Port of Singapore Authority (PSA) was formed. The Singapore Drydocks and Engineering Company was set up in 1968 to take over the Dockyard Department of the PSA. On 23 August 1968, the name of the company was changed to Keppel Shipyard (Private) Limited.

Keppel Shipyard’s first yard in Telok Blangah occupied what is now Caribbean at Keppel Bay, Reflections at Keppel Bay and the Keppel Island across the bridge. The shipyard operations have since relocated to Keppel’s facilities in Tuas, Jurong.

Keppel Shipyard is today part of Keppel Offshore & Marine, one of the world’s leading offshore and marine groups with a global network of 20 yards and offices.

Marking the Beginning of the New Keppel Bay Sailing Club

Last week, we officially turned the sod at Keppel Bay Sailing Club, marking a significant milestone in the construction of this iconic venue on the Yeppoon foreshore. The former club has now been demolished and the start of construction was celebrated alongside Federal Member for Capricornia Michelle Landry and some devoted and excited KBSC members.

This project encompasses state-of-the-art sailing facilities, day-to-day bistro and bar, multiple function and flexible 750 seat conferencing facilities, offering breath taking views out to Keppel Bay and surrounding islands. Set to open its doors in mid-2024, this extraordinary venue is not only set to invigorate the local economy but also put Yeppoon on the map for major conference and events!

We are honoured to be partnering with this community venue to deliver a new and improved landmark to the Capricorn Coast community.

Capricornia Cruising Yacht Club   

The club was established in 1974 by a group of sailors whose passion was sailing, and home was the beautiful Capricorn Coast. The Club House is situated at Rosslyn Bay, Yeppoon, just a short walk from the Keppel Bay Marina.
