Zadar ferry port

Zadar is a historical town in central Dalmatia which is very popular among tourists. That is why it is perfectly connected to almost all the islands in the Zadar archipelago and there is a connection with Ancona in Italy. Most of the ferry connections are now operated from the ferry terminal in Gaženica , located south-east of the old town of Zadar and its main ferry port. There is a port authority building in the port, but not a lot of facilities.

Table of Contents

The old port of Zadar is now left with a few catamaran connections and a ferry line for Italy.

The main bus station is between the Gaženica ferry terminal and the old town (3.5 km from Gaženica and 2 km from the old town).

Getting to and from the ports in Zadar

If you’re staying in Zadar and if you want to reach the islands of Ugljan , Dugi Otok , Iž , Molat and so on , here is how you get to the ferry terminal and the other port near the city centre from different parts of the town:

If you’re staying in the centre of Zadar, the catamaran port literally minutes away from most of the historical sights , so you can easily walk there. However, if you want to reach the ferry terminal Gaženica, you have to first take a bus number 2 or 4 to the main bus station in Zadar and from there take a bus number 9 to Gaženica ferry terminal.

If you’re staying in Diklo or Borik , you have to take a bus number 8 to the main bus station and from there take numbers 2 or 4 to reach the catamaran port in the centre or the bus number 9 to reach the ferry terminal in Gaženica.

The bus ticket is around 10 kn = a little bit more than a euro and the buses run from early morning to the late evening.

From all the three parts of the city mentioned above you can also take a taxi which won’t cost you a lot since it’s a quite a short distance.

If you’re staying outside of Zadar , for example in Petrčane (12 km from Zadar), there are regular bus lines between the main bus station in Zadar and Petrčane. The ticket is only a few euros.

Getting from Zadar airport to the ports

The airport of Zadar – Zemunik is around 10 km from Gaženica ferry terminal and 12 km from the catamaran port. Once you land, you can take a pre-booked transfer (which will cost you around 20 euros) or take a taxi.

There are also shuttle buses running from the airport towards Zadar – the main bus station. From there take numbers 2 or 4 to reach the catamaran port in the centre or the bus number 9 to reach the ferry terminal in Gaženica. The ticket for the shuttle bus is around 25 kn = 3 euros and the trip to the main bus station in Zadar takes 15 – 20 minutes.

If you want to read more about transportation from the airport to the ferry terminal, you can click on this link https://getbybus.com/en/blog/airport-bus-zadar/ :

Getting from other destinations in Croatia and Europe to Zadar ferry terminal/catamaran port:

Zadar is very well connected by regular or seasonal bus lines to many Croatian and even some European destinations. As mentioned above, the main bus station is located between the catamaran port (2 km) and the Gaženica ferry terminal (3.5 km). Click on this link to see the exact location

You might also want to choose to travel by car and you can choose both the highway or the coastal road. When you enter the city of Zadar, depending on where you want to go – Gaženica ferry terminal or the catamaran port (located right in the centre), you simply follow the signs for them and you’ll find it without a problem .

Zadar ports facilities

The port near the centre of Zadar is located on a peninsula where the old city core is, so most of the historical sights are nearby , just as the other facilities such as bars, restaurants, shops, a post office, a ticket office, ATM-s, etc.

On the ferry terminal Gaženica you however won’t find many facilities.

Zadar port is placed in the heart of the city. This position provides direct access to shopping places, sightseeing and other contents in the town. The passenger transfer to the port is fast and easy because walking distance between different localities is not more than 20 minutes. Only smaller ships dock here.

A new passenger terminal was officially opened on April 24, 2019 at Zadar Cruise Port. The new Zadar terminal building extends over 18,000 square metres on two floors. Larger cruise ships dock here.

As the citycenter is far away (4 KM) from the terminal in Gaženica, the authorities offer a shuttlebus, at the discretion of each of the cruise lines, that wll drop you near the sea organ, which is close to the center of town. Approx 15 Euro if this service is in operation

There is a local bus stop at the port and it can get you to town for a few Euros. First you should take the bus #9 (Liburnija bus line) which takes you to the central bus station. There, change buses and take #2 or #4, they will take you straight to the old town. The buses run every 30 min approximately. Buses #2 and #4 will drop you off at the Sea Organ in old town.

The sea organ, which, depending on the wind and waves, you can hear as soon as you get off the ship.

The musical Sea Organ (morske orgulje) is located on the shores of Zadar, Croatia, and is the world's first musical pipe organs that is played by the sea. Simple and elegant steps, carved in white stone, were built on the quayside. Underneath, there are 35 musically tuned tubes with whistle openings on the sidewalk. The movement of the sea pushes air through, and – depending on the size and velocity of the wave – musical chords are played. The waves create random harmonic sounds.

Sightseeing:

The town of Zadar with its region boast an important and rich artistic patrimony dating from Roman times to early Christian times and early Croatian medieval times; above all there are many sacred buildings worth visiting together with the extraordinary testimonies of a millenarian culture.

The marble, traffic- free streets of the Old Town are replete with Roman ruins, medieval churches and several fascinating museums. Massive 16thcentury fortifications still shield the city on the landward side, with high walls running along the harbor.

Shopping and food.

The City of Zadar is not only known for its historical and cultural monuments but also for its amply supplied vegetable and fish markets on the peninsula (a part of the old city). The market is daily supplied with fresh fruit and vegetables from the rich hinterland of "Ravni Kotari", the fruitful waters of Lake Vrana and the islands of Ugljan and Pasman. Judged by the variety of goods on offer, it is one of the largest markets in Croatia. The market is not only frequented for supplies, but also for the bustle, the abundance of color and the haggle with the local women merchants.

In the direct vicinity of the "green market" is the fish market with an exceptionally diverse offer of fish and seafood, as well as salted sardines by the piece. The fish market is situated close to the promenade, where lively colored fishing boats of all sizes lay crowded in the morning. The fishing tradition in these parts is very old (1995 marked the 1000th anniversary since the first written account of fishing in Croatia – Sali / Dugi Otok) and the most famous fishing town on the Adriatic is situated on the island of Ugljan. Just as at the market, here too it is necessary to haggle with the merchants, and, even if on that particular day you end up without fish on your menu, you will still have enjoyed the scent of the sea and heard the arguments of fishermen in the local dialect.

The romantic seaside city of Zadar has always been handy for its ferry connections to some of Croatia's best islands. However, it’s more than a jumping-off point - it has quiet wonders all of its own. Home to ancient Roman ruins, historic churches, cosmopolitan cafes, lively markets, and crystal-clear waters, the North Dalmatian city is one of the coolest places on the Adriatic. And as opposed to Split or Dubrovnik’s crowds, there’s an easy, laid-back pace of life here.

So, if you are looking for a vacation that combines relaxation and culture , Zadar is a great option. The city has something to offer everyone, from families to couples to solo travelers . Three days are plenty to discover the sights in the Old Town as well as to venture out to explore some of the nearby national parks and islands.

How to get to Zadar

The fastest and most convenient way to get to Zadar is by ferry, bus or plane.

Reaching Zadar by ferry is the best way to get in the right mood for holidays in the Adriatic Sea, with direct connections from other mainland cities in Croatia (Pula and Rijeka), the Adriatic Islands and the Italian port city of Ancona .

To get there by bus instead, you will find routes from all the major towns, cities and places in Croatia, such as Zagreb, Split , Dubrovnik , Sibenik, and more.

Lastly, you can catch a flight to Zadar Airport , which is located about 11 km from Zadar Old Town and is connected to other major Croatian and European cities. There is a public bus that leaves the airport to the Old Town every few minutes.

What to do in Zadar

Spend a morning wandering Zadar’s main market close to the harbor on the eastern side of the peninsula, where local vendors sell various Croatian delights 6 mornings a week.

If museums and history are your thing, don’t miss the Archeological Museum and the National Museum of Zadar . Then head to the Forum , the marketplace built by the first Roman emperor Augustus 2,000 years ago. You’re free to inspect the chunks of columns and broken pillars, there’s nothing behind glass or kept under lock and key. If you’re traveling with children, check out the Museum of Illusions .

After having lunch at Pet Bunara , or “Five Wells” square, take a short stroll along Obala kralja Petra Krešimira IV, the western embankment, to relax, sunbathe and visit the city’s 2 famous contemporary installations. The Sea Organ and The Greeting to the Sun , are both best experienced at sunset . In fact, Alfred Hitchcock called Zadar's sunset the most beautiful in the world so, don’t miss it.

If you fancy heading on an adventure further afield than Zadar’s Old Town, also known as the Zadar Peninsula, then there are plenty of choices. Admire the impressive waterfalls in the Krka National Park and the wild mountains in the Paklenica National Park or go canoeing on the Zrmanja River.

Of course, Zadar is well placed for island-hopping too. So, hop on a ferry to Silba, Pag, Dugi Otok, the islands of the Kornati National Park, and many more, and take your vacation in Croatia to the next level!

  • Cape Radman : situated in the charming vacation resort of Petrcane, just 15 minutes away from Zadar, Cape Radman is characterized by fantastic turquoise sea colors and ancient pines. It is very popular specifically for families with children.
  • Sakarun : located on the island of Dugi Otok, this is one of the best beaches in the Zadar archipelago. What sets this 800-m-wide bay apart is its white, soft sand and extremely shallow water, making it perfect for children. It can be accessed by boat from Zadar.

Make sure to visit the Garden Lounge , a ground-breaking bar and nightspot featuring live music and name DJs all summer. Located high atop the city’s Venetian walls, it also offers great views. The Arsenal Zadar , a multi-purpose venue housed in a renovated 16th century warehouse, is another one of the main entertainment experiences in Zadar.

Tip : for a unique experience in Zadar, check out the Full Moon Festival . It is held on the night of the full moon in August, and is filled with live music, dancing, singing, delicious food, and other activities.

Food in Zadar

The Dalmatian heritage can be seen in every facet of Zadar’s culture, including the local cuisine. As a popular modern tourist destination, Zadar has a tremendously varied gastronomic offer that can satisfy even the most demanding visitors. The city is mostly known for the following products and dishes:

  • salata od hobotnice (octopus salad)
  • brudet  (fish soup or fish stew)
  • crni rižot (a black risotto served with fresh squid or cuttlefish)
  • Dalmatian prosciutto
  • janjetina s ražnja (roasted lamp)
  • ninski šokol (dried and cured meat)
  • ninska sol (sea salt)
  • cheeses from Pag island
  • soparnik (a triangular, thin flatbread with a Swiss chard and olive oil filling)
  • fritule (doughnuts)
  • maraschino (clear cherry-flavored liqueur)

Useful info : to experience typical Dalmatian cuisine , make sure to go to an authentic konoba .

Here are 5 tips that we hope will be useful to you before and during your trip to Zadar:

  • The best time to visit Zadar is in July and August when the weather is at its finest. If you want to visit the parks, on the other hand, we would recommend doing so in May or June.
  • Kalelarga is Zadar’s main pedestrian-only promenade. Stretching from one end of Old Town Zadar to the other, it is the central place for hangouts, fun and people-watching.
  • One of the most unique Croatian experiences during your vacation here is to take a boat ride with the Boatmen of Zadar ( Barkajoli Zadarksi ). The barkajoli , an 800-year-old tradition and one of the most protective symbols of Zadar, transport passengers between Zadar Old Town and the rest of the city.
  • The Zadar Summer Theater Festival, Zadar Snova, the Salt Festival, and Sali Festival are just a few of the numerous local and international events that take place in Zadar during the summer.
  • Nin , a tiny medieval islet 20 minutes’ drive from Zadar, is one of the oldest towns in the Mediterranean. It was also voted the most romantic destination in Europe in 2016, so it’s worth coming here with your other half, especially during Romantic Week.

Transportation in Zadar

Walking is the best way to explore Zadar`s Old Town, because nearly all of it is pedestrian. As the area along the coast is relatively flat, biking is another popular and convenient way to get around Zadar and its surroundings. Marked bike paths are on the sidewalk, making the experience more relaxing.

The only form of public transportation in Zadar is by bus . The city’s local bus company is Liburnija which handles 10 different bus routes in Zadar and its surroundings.

While we do not recommend driving in Zadar, a car is very handy if you want to explore those amazing places off the beaten track. Keep in mind that you can find parking spaces alongside the city walls.

Zadar and Sibenik - Zadar

Marina zadar.

Zadar  is located in the central part of the  Adriatic coast . Zadar before the lower group of islands of Zadar and Kornati archipelago, which counted more than 300 islands, islets, and rocks. And so many boaters from all over the world elect Marina Zadar as an ideal starting point for  nautical adventure .

Marina Zadar is an in-town-marina, naturally sheltered, situated at the central part of the Adriatic coast and surrounded by hundreds of islands and islets. It is the ideal offset point for your nautical adventures, and since it is placed in the very center of the town you may find enough entertainment and fun to make your vacation pleasant and carefree.

Zadar

It is situated in the very center of the three thousand years old town, which has many historical sights, archaeological findings, and cultural contents, as well as modern shopping centers.  Marina Zadar  is a safe refuge, because it is naturally sheltered from wind and, besides its standard services (300 sea-berths, 200 on-land places, cranes, automatic yard etc.), it has a repair service where you can also get spare parts for your boat. If you don't have your own ship, and you wish to have memorable vacations, we can offer you the possibility of  hiring catamarans , motor ships or  sailing boats  in our Marina  Zadar Charter . After a pleasant day at sea, you may spend nice evening moments in our restaurant "Maestral" or Casino Zadar.

Marina Zadar is also the holder of the Blue Flag, an exclusive Eco-mark which indicates an ecologically pure, safe and well-maintained marina. Besides Marina Zadar, we have our annex, Marina Ić, which is located in the central part of the Zadar archipelago, only 14 NM from Marina Zadar. Along with sea resources, the  surroundings of Zadar  are rich with other contents and scenery, with many additional possibilities to spend active vacations - ideal tracks for walking and biking, horse-riding, mountain- climbing, free climbing, freshwater fishing, rafting, canoeing, hunting etc.

About Zadar

In a city with the most beautiful sunset, in a maritime archipelago facing a multitude of islands and islets, which protect the city from the strong winds, enjoy the symphony of the Sea Organ and magical urban light installation Pozdrav suncu [Greeting the Sun] near the new harbor for cruise ships.

Zadar

Zadar  is an ancient  Mediterranean port  city. The old town, surrounded by walls and towers on a peninsula, with a new, urban part is connected by a bridge, a symbol of the city.

Built on Roman urban principles, where there are several major longitudinal streets traversed by a greater number of latitudinal streets, give the city a rectangular shape. The old town is a treasure trove of archaeological treasures and monuments to the ancient, medieval and Renaissance periods. This is visible by a number of sacral and architectural monuments – the church of sv. Donat [St. Donatus] where every summer the sounds of Zadar's musical evenings echo, the Roman Forum near the main square, Kalelarga - the longest and widest street, the Cathedral of sv. Stošije [St. Anastasia], an Archaeological Museum with its exceptional treasures and many other monuments of cultural and historical heritage (town gate, Arsenal, churches, museums...).

Zadar  is a powerful cultural and economic city whose life is comfortable all year round but shows all its splendor in the summer. Visit the traditional events or contemporary events like the full moon nights, Zadar dreams, Millennium jump, Kalelarga art... Enjoy the  Mediterranean cuisine , taste the sweet Maraschino cherry liqueur, and take a swim from one of the sandy beaches in the Zadar area!

Pearl Dreams

6-day Sailing Itinerary from Zadar

There’s so much to see and so many places to visit from Zadar, that one week just isn’t long enough to see and visit them all. Most places you go, you’ll find unspoilt beaches, bays, cliffs and islands, along with idyllic little fishing and farming villages, so you can’t go too far wrong, even if you just follow your nose and decide spontaneously where to go.

Zadar - 6 day sailing itinerary

This route takes in a lot of the nearby islands and clocks in at 116 nautical miles – which works out at just under 20 nM a day. As you’ll likely be going at a pace of 5 knots or above, that means the sailing should only take 4-5 hours a day, which leaves plenty of time to go at a leisurely pace, to explore your start or end destinations in depth, or to take your time and bob into bays, swim on some beaches, practice man-overboard drills, or just relax.

As we’ll be spending a night in the Kornati marine national park, it’s worth buying an entry pass in advance (since the ticket inspectors will sting you for an extra 50%, and they patrol the islands every night). The unwritten rule is that you need a pass for every day that you’re in the national park after 4pm, so if you’re following our itinerary, a one day pass should suffice.

Ist

From Zadar, we’re heading in a north-westerly direction. You’ll pass lots of other charter yachts heading other directions, but we’re heading off the beaten track to a small farming village on the island of Ist. The prevailing wind is landward from the sea, so it should be a simple reach or broad reach to sail there.

Ist is an island of vines and olive groves, as well as sandy beaches, and it’s a quiet and tranquil place to spend the night, even though there are ferry connections to other islands. There’s a couple of bars and a church, but essentially this is a place to get away from it all and to enjoy life on the ocean waves.

Veli Iz

There are beaches on the south side of Molat, or you could pop into the town itself – which, oddly enough, was visited by King Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson in 1939. But then we’re heading in a south-westerly direction, reaching against the prevailing wind as we follow the channels between the islands and to the east side of Iz.

Veli Iz is a small fishing village which also happens to have its own Roman fort and 14th century church. Founded by fishermen way back when, the village also has a number of decent seafood restaurants, and is famous for its decorative pottery (for which there is even a museum). Sadly, though there were 70 pottery companies on the island in bygone years, there is now only one left.

Zut

You certainly need to stock up because Zut is out in the wilderness. Situated in a sheltered bay which has been used by sailors for centuries, the tourist board built a pontoon and walkway in the bay in recent years to make it easier for sailors to get to shore, and to increase the number of jobs on the island by 1200% - from 1 to 12 people.

When you moor up you’ll find a couple of small shops and bars or eateries (don’t rely on them to be open, just in case, but they’re good if they are), and not much else. It’s a very peaceful bay to spend the night in, and a very unspoilt island to explore.

Piskera

There are beaches and bays to explore, and you’re allowed to walk on the islands if you dare to brave the heat. The view from the top of the hills is certainly quite special, but it can take a bit of effort to get there.

From Zut, we’re heading west (likely beating or close-hauled) to pass over the top of Kornati island - the biggest island in the national park – and following down it’s western coast in a south-easterly direction, probably in a broad reach against the prevailing summer wind. Enjoy weaving your way around the islands, finding beaches, bays and even bars on the largely unspoilt islands. You need to head slightly west to ensure that you hit the west coast of Piskera, but it is fairly straight-forward to find the well-sheltered marina and to moor up for the night.

Piskera is similar to Zut in that it is a marina which was built primarily to make the Kornati islands easier for sailors to explore, so you won’t find a town here – though you will find a restaurant, an over-priced shop (but heck, it’s in the middle of nowhere, so it can’t be easy to stock it up!) and modern toilet facilities. It should be another tranquil night, although the bar here can get quite lively if there are enough sailors in the marina.

Murter

Starting in a south-easterly direction until we reach the southern tip of Kornati island, we then need to bear north-easterly to traverse across the channel to Murter. This should be a simple run with the prevailing wind, and you might be able to get away with a broad reach, but bonus marks are available if you manage to goose-wing your way back towards the mainland.

Murter is the largest town on the island of Murter (which isn’t really an island any more, since the arrival of a road connection to the mainland). Surrounded by brilliant beaches, it’s also popular with land-lubbing tourists, and there’s plenty of lively bars and restaurants along the waterfront, which will make a change of atmosphere from Piskera and Zut.

The best beaches are on the west coast, and you could anchor up here if you had time, or, if you fancy some exercise, you could walk to the top of the hill (where there is world war two military base) and enjoy watching the sun set over the Kornati islands.

Milna

Working our way up the coast, we’ll sail past Biograd, which is one of the most popular charter bases in Europe, and the home to the biggest boat show in Croatia (check out our destination guide for Biograd if you want to find out more about it, but it’s not worth stopping there today as it will be busy with people returning their charter yachts).

Further up the channel is lovers island. This is the most perfect heart-shaped island in the world. It was only really ‘discovered’ after the invention of Google Earth, but it’s now a romantic destination in it’s own right, and hundreds of people come and propose here each year. It’s a romantic place to go, and it’s traditional to loop around the island (or make a heart shape on your plotter if you’re skilled enough) if you’re going past it, and throwing a euro into the waters around here is supposed to sort out your love life.

Follow the coast further north and you’ll arrive back at Sukosan (the biggest marina in Croatia) or Zadar marina. You should refuel your yacht or catamaran before returning the boat to roughly the same space you took her from on day one. Someone will come and inspect the boat, but you’ll still be sleeping on her tonight.

If you’ve not had chance to visit the old town of Zadar, then now is a good time to go and see the 3,000 year old UNESCO world heritage site. Most bars near both marina’s will be lively with happy sailors recounting their adventures to anyone who will listen tonight, and it’s the last night of the holiday for so many people that it shouldn’t be difficult to find a lively atmosphere.

Hopefully you’ve been impressed by the sun, sea, sailing and general tranquillity of the Croatian islands, hopefully your crew all got on well together (and maybe there was a holiday romance?), and hopefully you’ve had a brilliant, enjoyable and relaxing holiday. Have a safe trip home, and, when you start to miss the sea and the sunshine, remember to visit PlainSailing.com to start planning your next epic adventure!

Sailing Conditions

Croatia Sailing - Wind Conditions

The winds are particularly reliable throughout the sailing season, when local sailors claim that they can set their watch by them: there are Mistral winds during the day which peak between 9am and mid-day, then take a break for a couple of hours, before returning (“after lunch”) for another few hours at 3pm until dusk, when the winds die down to a light breeze, if anything at all.

The daytime winds are usually Force 4 or Force 5, and their prevailing direction is landward, which is driven by the sun – as the land warms up and the air above it rises during the day, air is sucked from the sea. A little further out from the coast, and away from the Mistral winds, then the winds shoots down the Adriatic channel into the heart of the Mediterranean.

Zadar - Average Temperature

We use three marinas in Zadar, each offering excellent and modern facilities, and great levels of care for our guests.

If you're staying in the area before or after your charter, we can recommend these places that are close to Marina Zadar and D-Marin Borik - Prestige design rooms or El mirador rooms - or these places next to Sukosan - Hotel Joso or White Residence .

Marina Zadar

Marina Zadar is based right in the centre of town, which means it’s quite an atmospheric place to spend the night, and there’s plenty of bars and restaurants. The marina also boasts its own casino!

Marina Zadar

Marina Dalmacija, Sukosan

The recently built Marina Dalmacija is just 7km to the south of the historic old town (in the suburb of Sukosan), and, with space for 1,200 boats, is the biggest marina in Croatia. It has all the latest mod cons, including a swish beach bar and a waterfront restaurant with stunning decking over the sea.

Sailing conditions

When you rent a catamaran in Zadar… enjoy a typical Mediterranean climate. In summer, the average temperature is 27 degrees Celsius during the day - in winter it is around 3 or 4 degrees. The Maestral, a north-westerly wind blowing from the sea towards the land, not to be confused with the mistral and tramontane winds, makes the summer season very enjoyable, and island-hopping all the more appealing. That is why we advise you to sail between April and September, as your skipper will have the best sailing conditions. Croatia remains a high-pressure tourist zone in the middle of summer, during the months of July and August. If you are looking for more peace and quiet, rent your catamaran charter in Zadar outside the summer period.
