2020 Riviera 64 Sports Motor Yacht review

Riviera steps up its 40th-anniversary celebrations with the all-new riviera 64 sports motor yacht.

The all-new Riviera 64 Sports Motor Yacht has joined the Gold Coast-based luxury motor yacht maker's growing high-performance flybridge cruiser family. New from the keel up, Hull No.1 was packaged for a keen angler wanting to tap into the boat's ability to run wide, quickly and efficiently. While fishing was a focus for this build, Riviera has not compromised on the quality and workmanship for which it is renowned.

Fishing. Surely one of the most timeless, effortless and yet glorious of human pursuits. And so simple we’ve been doing it for longer than we’ve worn clothes.

Similar to so many other things, humans have found ways of making fishing more elaborate and spectacular.

While you start out as a child sitting on the riverbank, pretty soon you might find yourself pining for a simple tinnie with an outboard, which in turn leads to a creeping desire for a bigger boat…

Before you know it, you’re looking at a luxury vessel such as the all-new 2020 Riviera 64 Sports Motor Yacht, with a price tag you’d still fall short of if you’d won Who Wants to be a Millionaire more than thrice.

What we’re looking at here doesn’t much resemble many people’s idea of a fishing boat. Built for a US client who likes his fishing, it’s got outriggers and a spare (optional) helm at the rear of the flybridge, but beyond that it is still a member of Riviera's Sports Motor Yacht line of adventure cruisers. That means this is a boat equally at home making long passages to far-flung destinations as it is taking its owners diving, snorkelling, kayaking, jetskiing, and so on.

The giant eight-seater couch on the foredeck also seems to be a long way from where anyone might cast a line, and far more inviting an option than fighting fish.

Then there are all the dining areas, the sumptuous couches, the giant TVs, the truly lovely staterooms, the restaurant-sized galley.

The Riviera 64 Sports Motor Yacht is the entry-level model in Riviera’s proudly Australian-designed and built range of enclosed flybridge vessels made for cruising long distances quickly and efficiently. It joins two bigger models in the Sports Motor Yacht range, the 68 and the flagship 72.

A Riviera 50 Sports Motor Yacht – a scaled-down version of the 64 – should arrive in August.

Riviera’s Australian sales director, Chris Attard, says the Riviera 64 Sports Motor Yacht is all about versatility and ease of use.

“It’s all about the fingertip controls, the steering is nice and light, the controls are simple; it’s all about making it easy for anyone to own a boat of this size,” Attard says.

“And while you could just go out on the harbour and have a few beers and watch the footy, you can also go fishing out the back while your family sits in the mezzanine in air-conditioned comfort, or, if we had enough food on board, we could head out of the Sydney Heads right now, turn to starboard and head for New Zealand, because we’ve got enough fuel to get there, and back.”

Price and equipment

Let’s all just take a deep breath and lean into the price of the Riviera 64 Sports Motor Yacht, which is a not inconsequential $3.5 million.

But as Attard points out, the boat is entirely built and designed, with love, right here in Australia, so at that price you’re actually doing our balance of payments a favour by buying local.

Build No.1 was specced with almost $400,000 of options.

It seems no expense was spared, and it feels like all the timber and chrome would weigh a tonne on their own. All the stainless steel fastenings are 316 marine grade, and the forward hull compartment is foam-filled for added strength and (very effective) noise dampening.

The engine room, which is vast, also features acoustic insulation for quieter cruising.

Everything is air-conditioned, and there’s a properly large sunroof on the flybridge, a wine cooler in the galley, icemakers, on-board Wi-Fi, tempered glass doors, too many televisions to count, surround sound systems, plus various wet bars and lots of refrigeration and iceboxes for chilling all those fish you’ll catch.

Oh, and a 40-piece cutlery set, 40-piece dinner set, 12 goblets, 12 champagne flutes; the list goes on and then on some more. Anything you can’t find is surely optional.

One of those options is a gyroscope, in this case a Seakeeper M16, which you really would want even at $181,024. At the flick of a switch, the gyroscope cancels out almost all the Riviera 64 Sports Motor Yacht’s pitch and roll, at rest or on the move.

Design and layout

Step onto the aft swim deck and enter the cockpit via a pair of transom doors, and you are immediately struck by the sense of space, and width of the Riviera 64 Sports Motor Yacht.

The cockpit is divided so that there is an open area with refrigeration units leading into a very inviting mezzanine area with a large foldout teak dining table, glass doors at one end and a glass hatch at the other.

The whole space opens up to the galley and saloon inside.

The mezzanine has two large, L-shaped couches, and an LED TV that folds down for those moments where you tire of the view.

Stepping into the galley, you’re in what feels like a proper, home-sized kitchen with classy benchtops, lashings of timber and quality Miele appliances.

There’s also a huge amount of fridge space, a wine cooler, and a full-size dishwasher.

The galley blends into the big, plush saloon, which feels like a family living room, complete with a properly large 50-inch TV that rises up to act as a wall between the saloon and the galley, and a hidden home theatre surround-sound system.

The flybridge helm is dominated by three large Raymarine touchscreens laid across the length of the port side console. The skipper sits inboard, with the co-pilot enjoying a corner office.

Pop out the portside pantograph door and you can stroll onto what’s our favourite part of the boat, the foredeck. Here, you feel surrounded by the water and yet luxuriously ensconced in a fabulous entertaining space, with its own stereo system and generous iceboxes.

Owners can opt to use this space as a tender store.

Staterooms are accessed via a forward companionway descending from the forward section of the saloon.

There are two guest cabins, one to starboard with bunks and another to port with two single beds that slide together at the push of a button to form a double. There’s also a two-way entry to the portside day head.

The VIP stateroom in the bow would be a more than ample main bedroom on most boats, with its own private ensuite, walk-around queen-size bed surrounded in plush-piled carpet, and stunningly crafted cabinetry and storage.

The amidships full-beam master stateroom is something else again. It is properly presidential and almost absurdly spacious, as is its ensuite (yes, that’s three bathrooms and four bedrooms in total).

The master’s queen-size bed is almost dwarfed by the space around it. Giant picture windows make the space feel even lighter and bigger, with their bonus portholes to let the sea breeze flow through while at anchor.

A 43-inch LED TV is at the foot of the bed.

The boat is set up to sleep eight, but there’s another slide-out double bed hidden away below the couches on the flybridge. Drop-down blinds turn this space into another room.

If desired, owners can option an extra pair of crew bunks for the utility room.

The Riviera 64 Sports Motor Yacht’s flybridge oozes class and exclusivity and feels like a space to hang out and relax while you watch someone else do all the driving.

The layout of touchscreens and camera relays on the main helm looks like something out of NASA, or even Space X, and from here you can monitor what the kids are up to two floors below, check out a thermal view of what’s in front of you at night, navigate or make a thousand different adjustments, all at the touch of a finger.

I swear, on one screen I saw the words “gyro adjustment” and “electric towel rails on/off” right next to each other. You really can control everything from up there.

The flybridge has space for up to 10 people and includes a large, open space aft and yet another lounge area with a table.

The cockpit, where the keen anglers will spend their days, is a useful 9.1 square metres with the mezzanine taking up 7.6m square.

On the water

You expect to be intimidated by taking the tiller of a boat this big and flash, but it’s surprising just how easy the Riviera 64 Sports Motor Yacht is to pilot.

The supremely elevated, emperor-like seat for the skipper is a big help.

Standard engine choices are twin 1300hp MAN V8 1300s, while the boat we tested, Hull No.1, was fitted with the optional 1550hp Man V12 1550 units.

The sense of effortless thrust from the optional MAN V12s we had on board was little short of awesome.

Underway on our test on Sydney Harbour, the Riviera 64 Sports Motor Yacht copes with ease at all speeds. While fishing, the engines' Twin Disc express mode will allow the boat to troll at just 2.0 knots.

The sense that you are doing 32 knots, as we were once outside Sydney Heads on a glorious open-ocean day, is difficult to equate because the Riviera 64 Sports Motor Yacht makes so little noise.

“We spend a lot of time and energy making this boat quiet and smooth,” Attard says, and that effort really has worked.

“The reason we do that is if you go out to sea for 10 or 13 hours fishing or watching whales or whatever, if you’re on a boat that’s noisy and throws you around a bit, then when you get back to the dock you know you’ve been on the water all day – it can be exhausting.

“But this is a luxury boat, and what we want from our vessels is for it to feel like you haven’t been on a boat, it’s that comfortable and smooth and quiet.

“And with the gyro stabiliser, you get back and you feel ready to go out that night.”

Having turned the gyro off and turned side on to the swell, we can tell you that the Seakeeper is an option you’d be mad to not have.

It really is surprising how much more sanguine this tall boat is with it on.

Berthing is a relative doddle, with a low-speed joystick system fitted to the bridge upstairs and at the rear deck on the starboard side – more are available if they are needed.

Overall, skippering this big boat was extremely enjoyable.

Sure, $3.5 million is a lot of money for a boat, but the Riviera 64 Sports Motor Yacht is pretty much in a league of its own.

The overall impression is that you’re stepping aboard something very special, hugely spacious and properly luxurious, and this makes the motor yacht feel much more like a high-dollar floating home.

If it was a house, it would share a postcode with Darling Point, Toorak or Peppermint Grove.

It’s also a wonderful surprise to find it so easy to use and so unintimidating to skipper, even on a busy waterway such as Sydney Harbour.

I could live with the 64, and would happily have it without even taking a look at the 68 or 72. This will do.

Reviewed: Riviera 64 Sports Motor Yacht

Most yachts are designed for a specific purpose, be it long-distance cruising, sport fishing or entertaining. In this regard, Riviera’s 64 Sports Motor Yacht is something of an anomaly. It can do all those things at once.

For owners who want to make their way from Maine to Miami, pulling back the throttles to 6.6 knots will nearly double the range needed. The marlin are biting? The Riviera 64 I got aboard had hydraulic outriggers, a transom livewell and a cockpit large enough for a half-dozen anglers to fight fish at the same time. Cocktail hour has arrived? When I was aboard with eight people, it seemed as if there were a mere skeleton crew.

As for fit and finish, there is five-coat, high-gloss-varnished, book-matched walnut woodwork. Foldout sections of the salon’s dinette are book-matched on one side and crafted with a starburst pattern on the other. Decking is old-growth teak, sourced for renewability. The enclosed bridge, accessed via an interior staircase, has a wet bar, L-shaped settee and forward lounge in addition to the helm and mate seats. In the galley are a wine chiller, dishwasher and full-size refrigerator with freezer drawers. These are capped off behind more glossy walnut and are secured shut with beefy locking latches.

The thoughtful design elements continue outside. The 64′s open bridge aft, for instance, has an L-shaped settee and a set of controls including a multifunction display.

Belowdecks are three guest staterooms: a queen berth forward, Pullman berths to starboard, and a pair of twin berths that slide together into a double to port. The full-beam master is on this deck amidships. Every stateroom is peaceful and quiet, a function of having real bulkheads as opposed to thin veneer partitions. The quiet- ness is particularly surprising in the master, which is closest to the engine room. The stateroom’s watertight bulkhead door was closed when I approached it, and I could barely hear a sound, but when I swung it open, I discovered that both gensets were running behind all the sound-deadening material.

I found similar tranquility while standing above the engine room, where cruisers and anglers will spend a lot of time. Riviera calls this space the “back porch.” Technically, the area is a mezzanine raised above cockpit level and separated from the salon. But that term doesn’t accurately describe the space.

Walk out of the salon through the stainless-steel-framed sliding door, and—rather than enter the cockpit—you find a room very much like a screened-in porch. Parts of the sides and the back are enclosed (or not) with clear canvas. An L-shaped dinette is to starboard, and a settee is to port.

The area is sure to be the dining spot of choice when cooking up the catch of the day on the cockpit’s integrated electric grill. When someone is prepping a meal in the galley, access to the back porch is easy because a window next to the salon door swings up and open on hinges, connecting the two areas.

Owners who prefer an outdoor experience more akin to lounging on a wide-open, sun-warmed patio can walk up to the bow. There’s a full-size settee up there, plus a lounge and cocktail table.

Usually, choosing a yacht requires making some sacrifices. An owner might swap luxury for fishability, usable interior space for usable exterior space, range for speed, and so on. But the Riviera 64 Sports Motor Yacht left me scratching my head, trying to think of what someone would have to give up to own it.

I’m still thinking—and probably will be for a long time to come.

Riviera 64 sports motor yacht – let the world premiere tour begin.

As the Riviera 64 Sports Motor Yacht commences her world premiere tour, anticipation is building among expectant owners eager to step aboard their dream motor yacht for the first time.

Riviera is now commencing the manufacture of seven 64 SMYs, and most of the new owners are yet to see this stunning new addition to Riviera’s flagship Sports Motor Yacht collection due to ongoing travel restrictions.

Among the new owners are Bruce and Sue Eddington of Melbourne, Victoria. This will be their third Riviera after Mr Eddington changed tack more than a decade ago when he swapped sailing for the relaxed pleasures of owning a Riviera motor yacht.

That was when the veteran of six Sydney-to-Hobart campaigns and his wife Sue wanted to enjoy cruising the waters of Tasmania together in utter comfort and luxury.

“There’s certainly a lot of expectation for the 64 SMY from our end, as we are building our new boat by remote control,” said Mr Eddington.

“Normally we’d be on the Gold Coast three times by now and spending time at the factory being part of her build process, except the travel restrictions have precluded us from doing this. We’re pleased to have been kept up to date with photos and videos of her progress, and we have great trust in Riviera to build a boat that we’re happy with. Riviera really do care about their owners.”

Superior amenity and functionality

Behind her elegant and contemporary lines, the Riviera 64 SMY is a luxury motor yacht that optimises onboard space and offers superior amenity and functionality from bow to stern with multiple entertainment, living and storage areas.

The 64 boasts four staterooms including a full-beam master, three bathrooms, a large covered mezzanine that expands the saloon deck by 50 per cent, a superbly appointed and expansive flybridge, and a versatile foredeck with plenty of room to either relax and entertain in comfort or to accommodate a large tender.

The mezzanine design, which flows into the aft galley and beyond to the first-class saloon, can be enclosed with clears for all-weather boating. The expansive flybridge adds another level of luxury with the feel of a second saloon, complete with its own rear deck and elevated views.

The accommodation deck is complemented by the amenity of a spacious and versatile utility room with a washer and dryer and plenty of extra storage space. The utility room can also be optioned as crew quarters.

The Riviera 64 has been designed and engineered to deliver the ultimate in blue-water cruising with the space, comfort and capacity needed for extended adventures. She benefits from the proven engineering advances of the Riviera V-drive system, tunnel hull design and a lower shaft angle, that aids stability and enhances efficiently and performance.

Powered by the choice of twin MAN turbo V8 1300hp or V12 1550hp, diesels deliver quiet, effortless and smooth acceleration giving her a top speed of around 34 knots. The 64 SMY comes with a 5-year MAN Gold limited warranty.

The Eddingtons’ journey to the 64 SMY has been two years in the making. After discovering the pleasures of owning a Riviera 51 Open Flybridge and later a 50 Enclosed Flybridge, they were among an experienced group of Riviera owners who were asked to provide input into the early design concept of the 64 SMY when an interior mock-up was created for owners to tour and critique.

It’s been an ‘evolution’

“It’s been an evolution that we’re very appreciative to be a part of and we’ve been trusting of the entire process,” said Mr Eddington.

“We saw the mock-up three or four times and it was informative and impressive. Even seeing it in the hull in the factory, she was always a very pretty boat.”

“Sue was really big on the interiors and the Riviera designers were accepting of her input. Some of the changes we suggested have been adopted in the final design. The 64 is incredibly stylish.”

The Eddington’s will get their first chance to step aboard the Riviera 64 SMY in Sydney next month on the fourth leg of the world premiere tour which will take her south from the Gold Coast down the eastern seaboard of Australia, followed by a New Zealand premiere and then the United States of America with an east coast tour later this year.

Ease of operation

The Eddington’s are equally impressed with the maneuverability and ease of handling a much larger Riviera motor yacht. With both their previous Rivieras moored at the Motor Yacht Club of Tasmania in the Hobart suburb of Lindisfarne, the Eddington’s have spent many years venturing along the pristine and rugged Tasmanian coast either together or with friends.

“Ten years ago, people our age wouldn’t have been able to do what we’ve done with a 50-footer, simply because the systems and the technology that Riviera employs today, did not exist that now makes boating in large vessels easier,” said Mr Eddington.

“When we made our commitment to Rivera in August 2018, we were relying on the fact that this boat will be as easy to handle as the 50. From what we’ve seen of the 68 and 72 SMYs when we had a run on one of those, it will be easy and pleasurable.

“The propulsion system is so user-friendly. If we didn’t have a propulsion system with the joystick and the thrusters that Twin Disc provide, we wouldn’t have a boat the size of a 64.

“We liked the fact that the 64 was bigger. We liked the full-beam master, the three cabins and the utility room. They will give us extra space, and it’s also more opulent.

“The utility room is one the of the smartest inclusions Riviera offers with its bigger boats. Having the extra length to take a washing machine and dryer, toolbox, workbench and a place to store your fishing rods and equipment is great. Having the laundry set up and not tucked away in a cupboard is so much better.

“The full-beam master stateroom is tremendous. The flybridge is beautifully appointed, and the instrumentation and functionality at the helm’s dash just gets better by the year. We’re really happy with it.”

A new way of life

Since stepping aboard their first Riviera, cruising has become a new way of life for the Eddington’s.

“I don’t do anything on our Riviera without Sue; it’s just she and I, and that’s the great thing,” said Mr Eddington.

“We knew what we were looking for, and we certainly formed the view that the Riviera was the best boat to buy. We did a lot of research looking at other brands and sizes of boats before we committed to the 50. Between the Volvo Penta Integrated Propulsion System and the Czone digital switching system, it was light years ahead of the 51.

“It sounds funny to say, but for us, apart from size, the jump from the 51 to the 50 with its far greater internal volume was a much bigger step than the move up to the 64. We’ll have the ability to run the boat ourselves and stay out a lot longer now.

“One of the features we loved about the 50 was the awning window and the way it opened up. We never thought we’d like that, being southerners where everything is cold. The use we got out of that ability to open up the galley and saloon to the cockpit was magnificent.

“Having that again on the 64 and having the total cover and protection of the mezzanine outside, it takes our boating to another level as this really opens up the entire saloon deck. Even in Tasmania, you’d be surprised how much use that will get.”

Extended cruise home

Once the Eddington’s take delivery of their 64 SMY in August, they are planning to take their time to cruise her home to Hobart.

“We’ll initially spend a bit of time around the Gold Coast and then we’d like to get up to Mooloolaba, the inside of Fraser Island and Bundaberg to cruise the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef out to Lady Musgrave Island.

“Then it’s off to Sydney for Christmas, where we’ll stay for two or three months before wandering down to Hobart in late March.”

That will be one Sydney-to-Hobart cruise that Mr Eddington concedes will be a lot more comfortable and luxurious than he has experienced in the past.

6-year-old boy dies after getting tangled in ropes when boat capsizes on lake

SHERWOOD SHORES, Texas ( KXII/ Gray News) - A child has died in Texas after the boat he was on capsized during a recent thunderstorm.

Texas authorities said a boat carrying eight people flipped over on Lake Texoma Wednesday night when a severe thunderstorm moved through the area.

The personal fishing vessel capsized near Juniper Point.

According to Texas Game Wardens, the people on board were wearing life jackets, but a 6-year-old boy became tangled in ropes under the boat and died.

The child’s body was pulled from the lake, and first responders said he had a pulse but was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Authorities did not immediately release the boy’s identity and said their investigation remains ongoing.
