Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club

Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club, founded in 1871, located on Oyster Bay, New York, has a long and storied tradition of yacht racing and fostering generations of sailors who have and who continue to excel in sailing.

From the Commodore:

“Sailing and competitive racing at Seawanhaka prevails as a way of life today as much as it did 141 years ago. Seawanhaka and its members are proud to support the National Sailing Hall of Fame in the continuation and furtherance of that tradition.”

William R. Denslow, Jr., Commodore

By past Commodore P. James Roosevelt/ © 1994

Seawanhaka clubhouse

Seawanhaka was founded in September 1871 aboard William L. Swan’s sloop GLANCE anchored off Soper’s Point, Centre Island. As first officially recorded, there were twelve founders.

By acclamation, Swan was elected Seawanhaka’s first Commodore. A half model of GLANCE hangs above the arch as one exits the main room of today’s Clubhouse, while private signals of the original members crown that exit.

The new Commodore, a member of one of the area’s foremost families, served for many years as the Corinthian organist and choirmaster at the First Presbyterian Church in Oyster Bay. He was a round, jolly man who encouraged sailing tests among the oyster fishermen and enjoyed gamming with friends and singing well into the night aboard GLANCE, a bottle of spirits handy on the main saloon table the while.

It was customary to hold Club meetings (both formal and informal) on the flagship. GLANCE at 41 feet was one of only two vessels in the original fleet up to that calling. As the Club grew full tilt, it became necessary for the Commodore to commission a new flagship. This was the 77-foot schooner ARIEL, launched in May 1873. She served as the flagship until 1876 when Commodore Swan declined re-nomination. Her model is on the north wall of the Model Room.

The Club burgee is a constellation consisting of 12 stars in the form of a vertical cross on a field of blue. The fact that this number coincides with the count of Founders s entirely coincidental, as the design was taken from the flag of the Admiral of the Brazilian Navy.

The Founders adopted a threefold statement of purpose:

Becoming proficient in navigation. The personal management, control and handling of their yachts. All matters pertaining to seamanship.

These remain today a valid statement of our goals.

How to Spend a Perfect Day on Centre Island

Escape the bustling city life of Toronto without really leaving the city.

centre island yacht club

Are you looking for a quick escape from the bustling city life of Toronto without really leaving the city? Let me take you on a virtual tour of one of my favorite spots that feels a world away but is just a short ferry ride from downtown Toronto - Centre Island.

Centre Island, nestled in the heart of the Toronto Islands, serves as the perfect urban escape. This lush, green oasis offers a tranquil retreat with its sprawling parklands, picturesque beaches, and family-friendly attractions. Whether you’re a solo adventurer, a couple looking for a romantic day out, or a family seeking fun under the sun, Centre Island has something for everyone.

Things to Do

  • Breathtaking Beaches : Ready for some sunbathing or a dip in the cool waters? Centre Island boasts beautiful beaches such as Manitou Beach that are perfect for relaxing or building sandcastles with the little ones.
  • Picnic Paradises : With its numerous picnic areas dotted throughout, you can enjoy a leisurely lunch with stunning views of Lake Ontario and the Toronto skyline.
  • Ride Bikes : Rent a bike or a pedal boat to explore the island’s beauty at your own pace. The island’s flat terrain makes it ideal for family bike rides.
  • Centreville Amusement Park : A hit with the kids, this amusement park features over 30 rides and attractions, including a historic carousel and a miniature railway. It’s like stepping into a storybook village!
  • Nature and Wildlife : For the nature lovers, the island is a haven for various bird species. Don’t forget your binoculars for some bird watching.
  • Gardens and Art Installations : Stroll through the Franklin Children’s Garden or admire the various art installations scattered around the island.
  • Splash Pad: A popular spot for kids to cool off during the warm summer months, with various water features and jets.

How to Get There

The two most common ways of getting to Centre Island — both are scenic!

  • Ferry : The ferry ride to Centre Island from the Jack Layton Ferry Terminal is not just a mode of transport; it’s part of the adventure. Enjoy the scenic views of the city skyline as you approach the island.
  • Water Taxis: If you’re looking for a faster, more flexible way to get to Centre Island, consider taking a water taxi. Unlike the ferry, which has a set schedule, water taxis can offer more flexibility with departure times, which is perfect for those who decide to make a last-minute trip. Pickup spots are dotted around the harbourfront — just search Google Maps to find the closest one to you.

Essential Tips for a Perfect Day at Centre Island

  • Explore Freely : While there’s plenty to do, don’t forget to set aside some time to simply wander. The island’s charm lies in its peaceful walkways, hidden nooks, and stunning lakefront views.
  • Plan Ahead : Check the ferry schedule in advance and aim to arrive early, especially on weekends or public holidays, to avoid long queues.
  • Buy Ferry Tickets Online : Avoid the long lines at the ferry terminal by purchasing your tickets online in advance. This way, you can head straight to the boarding area and save more time for fun on the island.
  • Arrive by Water Taxi, Depart by Ferry : The ticket for the ferry is technically only for the way there. It’s free to depart the island by ferry. So you can take a water taxi over and take a free ride on the ferry home.
  • Arrive Early or Late : The ferries and the island itself can get pretty crowded, especially on weekends and holidays. Plan to arrive early in the morning or later in the afternoon to dodge the biggest crowds.
  • Pack Wisely : Remember, there are limited shops on the island. Pack essentials like sunscreen, water bottles, snacks, and a small first aid kit. Don’t forget hats and sunglasses to protect you from the sun!
  • Rent a Bike or Bring Your Own : Exploring the island on two wheels is not only fun but also efficient. There’s a bike rental on the island, or you can bring your own bike on the ferry.
  • Check the Weather : The weather can be a bit unpredictable. Check the forecast before you go and be prepared with rain gear or extra layers, just in case.
  • Explore Beyond Centre Island : The Toronto Islands are a cluster of gems waiting to be explored. Don’t limit yourself just to Centre Island. Ward’s Island and Hanlan’s Point are also worth a visit and are easily accessible by foot or bike.
  • Respect the Island : It’s a beautiful, shared space that we all want to keep clean and green. Make sure to dispose of your trash properly and respect the wildlife.
  • Plan Your Meals : There are a few restaurants and snack bars on the island, but they can be pricey. Bringing a picnic is a wonderful idea, allowing you to choose your view for lunch. Just remember, no alcohol is allowed outside designated areas.
  • Stay Hydrated : Bring plenty of water, especially on hot days. There are some water fountains available, but it’s best to come prepared.
  • Capture the Memories : The island offers some of the best views of the Toronto skyline, so don’t forget your camera or fully charged phone to capture those Instagram-worthy shots!

Shelter island water tests could include silver beach: original focus was on menantic peninsula.

There was no formal vote by the Water Advisory Committee (WAC) to recommend another Town advisory body, the Water Quality Improvement Advisory Board (WQI), to consider funding water testing for residents in the Menantic Peninsula and Silver Beach. Rather, it’s a “sense of the committee” to have Town Engineer Joe Finora make the request at the next WQI meeting scheduled for July 4.

It was a tricky situation for the WAC because Greg Toner, a member of the WQI, said he disagreed with bringing the request for funding to that committee, insisting it wasn’t ready. He has also been outspoken about not wanting to fund future water testing for any residents unwilling to provide full results of their tests to the Town.

As it currently stands, plans call to ask residents who want tests to provide their full data, but not to require it. Two other members of the WAC — Ken Pysher and Doug Sherrod — are Silver Beach residents, so they recused themselves from the vote. That left four members who favored moving forward with the request, including Mr. Finora.

When the subject arose last month, the focus was only on the Menantic Peninsula as the next target of testing. But Mr. Sherrod said he thought it unfair to have Silver Beach moved down in consideration.

A brief discussion revealed that members generally agreed with him and even Anita Brush, president of the Menantic Peninsula Homeowners Association, said she favored Silver Beach being included, noting how that neighborhood’s residents had been helpful to residents in her area in determining how to get on the radar of those in the Town for consideration.

Mr. Finora noted that the number of tests the Suffolk County Department of Health Services can handle is expected to fall between 50 and 100 houses, with collection of water samples likely in early fall, and testing of the samples to follow.

But he favored including Silver Beach in the mix, even though it could delay the process into the winter. He has been the point person speaking with Health Department officials to work out arrangements. He will also be the person to carry the request for funding to the WQI.

Silver Beach residents have been proactive and vocal about their concerns with water quality as well as salted well water. Mr. Finora made it clear the tests being discussed deal with potable water, not salted well water.

Ms. Brush said residents in the Menantic Peninsula tend not to speak about their water concerns, hesitant that it would affect their property values. A local realtor has maintained testing and dealing with any problems that might affect the safety of drinking water would likely increase the value of the property.

If the attitude among some Menantic Peninsula residents is let’s not talk about the subject, the role of the WAC needs to be, “Let’s talk about it,” WAC Chairman Peter Grand said.

At this stage, there are no plans for any public water system other than those that exist in the Heights, Dering Harbor and West Neck.

Even if the next step of public testing is funded and reveals mixed results about the quality of water, there are no plans by the town to address solutions. Residents can make their own decisions, just as those in the West Neck Water District did working out an arrangement with the Suffolk County Water Authority, or opting to use bottled water rather than consuming well water that they discover through testing is not potable.

Testing would be of a wider scope of potential contaminants than the tests conducted last year in the Center triangle.

Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez are taking Greece by land, sea and air.

An isle spy tells Page Six that the power couple has been seen on Mykonos, where helicopter pilot Sánchez was spotted taking a whirly-bird for a spin off the duo’s boat, which is filled with “toys,” y’know, like choppers.

Said the fellow traveler: “Jeff was seen coming from the city center in Chora ” — as the tony town is called by locals and in-the-know visitors — “and getting on and off his helicopter onto his smaller support boat.”

Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez

The couple was also photographed strolling through the streets of Mykonos hand-in-hand.

The source further said that, “Lauren has been seen flying a helicopter on and off their support boat, where they keep all their toys . . . helicopters, speed boats and other water toys.”

The source also told us that, “Jeff’s keeping the super big boat they live on, on the other side of the island where there is less wind.”

Jeff Bezos, Lauren Sanchez

The source was referring to the couple’s famous $500 million superyacht , Koru, which they debuted last summer. Building of the mammoth vessel for the Amazon tycoon began in 2018.

Bezos also reportedly owns a “smaller” $75 million yacht, Abeona, which shadows his bigger boat . (One boat blog explained the concept: “In car terms, this is basically the same as buying a Porsche so you can drive to the garage where your Bugatti is parked.”)

The little ol’ support boat can accommodate 45, including 20 crew.

Bezos also owns a fleet of helicopters and private planes plus properties galore, of course.

Also on Mykonos as the summer heats up , we hear, is billionaire Jets owner Woody Johnson, who was spotted at fancy beach club Scorpios, after taking a tender from his own yacht.

Bezos and Sánchez have also been seen in Greece dining on the island of Hydra with Bezos’ son Preston.

No boat? No problem. Here's how to get on the water even if you don't own a boat.

R hode Island, with 400 miles of coastline , is called the Ocean State, but getting on the water can be difficult, unless you own a boat, or have a good friend or relative who owns one.

Here are some tips for getting on the water without marrying into a family of boaters:

What's the best way to rent a boat in Rhode Island?

Wickford Boat Rentals has more than a dozen boats ranging from 19 to 36 feet, both power boats and sailboats. Daily and extended rentals are available.

The business requires renters to demonstrate they're qualified to handle a boat on their own. "We vet them pretty heavily," said owner David Fetherston.

Do you need training to drive a boat in RI?

For those who haven't had training, lessons are available through Wickford's In-Command Seamanship Training program. Wickford also offers charters with a "captain on board who will take you on a carefree excursion around Rhode Island’s beautiful coastline."

Rental costs vary depending on the size of the boat and the rental period. For example, smaller boats rent for about $295 for a half day and $395 for a full day. The larger boats rent for about $745 to $945. Repeat renters can get discounts by joining Wickford's Captain's Club.

Wickford Rentals also offers chartered trips aboard its Sabre 36 Express, Lorelei. The charter includes a captain and crew member and costs $1,550 plus gas for a half day, $2,250 plus gas for a full day.

Renting kayaks in Rhode Island

Kayaks require less training and boating knowledge than powerboats and sailboats. They may also provide the easiest and least expensive access to water.

Several businesses in Rhode Island offer kayak rentals. The Kayak Centre in Wickford rents several different types of kayaks, including pedal kayaks. A single recreational kayak rents for $37 for two hours and $53 for four hours. The business also rents out standup paddle boards, $42 for two hours, $58 for four hours.

The business rents kayaks out of two locations, Wickford and Charlestown. Reservations must be made in advance. The Kayak Centre also offers lessons, tours and kayak fishing.

Or, if you're in the Providence area, Providence Kayak rents single and tandem kayaks in the heart of downtown and in Lincoln Woods. Rentals start at $20 for 45 minutes.

What are boat clubs and how do you join one in RI?

Freedom Boat Club , which has six Rhode Island locations, offers an option between renting and owning. The club requires a down payment and monthly dues. The standard entry fee is $7,999, but the club often offers new-member promotions at a reduced joining fee. Monthly dues range from $349 to $429, according to Michelle Voss, a company spokeswoman.

In addition to its locations in Wakefield, North Kingstown, Warwick, Newport, Barrington and Portsmouth, Freedom Boat Club has more than 400 locations across North America, Europe and Australia.

"A major benefit to membership is that members not only have unlimited access to their home club fleet of boats, but reciprocal access to enjoy any of our locations worldwide," Voss said. "Many of our members plan their travel based on where we have locations."

Freedom requires members to pass a written exam and on-the-water training, which is covered by the membership cost.

Gondola rides in Providence offer unique sightseeing opportunities from the water

Probably the most famous and most romantic way to get on the water in Rhode Island is to take a gondola river ride with La Gondola Providence.

Owner Matthew "Marcello" Haynes has four gondolas available to take guests through downtown Providence on the Providence and Woonasquatucket rivers. Reservations aren't required but are advised, Haynes said.

La Gondola Providence offers a variety of trip types. The Sogni, the original and "still the most popular," costs $89 for two people on a 40-minute private ride. It "includes an ice bucket, glasses, and opener (BYOB), handmade Italian wine biscuits, and a little singing from your gondolier." Your gondolier would be happy to point out the sights and answer questions during the trip."

La Gondola Providence also offers half-hour trips during WaterFire that cost $299 for up to six guests.

A classic sailing cruise out of Newport is another great boating option

Another option that lets someone else do the piloting or sailing is a sightseeing trip out of Newport. Newport Classic Cruises offers rides on sailboats and a motor yacht called Rum Runner II.

The Rum Runner II was built during Prohibition for use in the rumrunner trade, according to Newport Classic Cruises. "Relive the speed and thrill of the chase of the smuggler boats from the days of Prohibition."

Trips on the Rum Runner II cost $45 for adults, $42 for seniors and $35 for children.

Newport Classic Cruises also offers charters on sailboats.
