UIM Class 1 offshore racing

Introduction.

In October 2020, the Union Internationale Motonautique (UIM) assigned the international rights to stage Class 1offshore powerboat racing to Powerboat P1. The agreement is for ten years and includes organizational and promotion rights to the UIM Class 1 World Championship. P1’s relationship with the UIM spans almost two decades and its aim is to take Class 1 back to where it belongs at the pinnacle of offshore racing. The agreement gives P1 the opportunity to grow the Class 1 championship in the United States and at the same time develop plans to globalize the series over the coming years.

Development

The sport of powerboat racing dates back to the late 19th century with the earliest recorded race being in Nice in the south of France, but the first officially recognized international offshore race was a 22-mile event from Calais to Dover. The modern era of offshore racing began in 1956 with the famous Miami-Nassau race which ultimately lead to a UIM-sanctioned World Championship in 1964. APBA-sanctioned Class 1 racing is promoted by Powerboat P1, with catamarans competing with strictly regulated sterndrive Mercury Racing 9.0L 1100hp twin-turbocharged V8 engines. The current Class 1 champions are the Victory team from the UAE. Offshore racing has undergone enormous changes since its earliest days, with the quest for speed producing boats, engines and transmission systems that are highly sophisticated and the use of advanced composites significantly improving safety levels.

Each boat has a two-man crew: the driver and throttleman. They work closely with their pit crews to decide the race set-up: the type of propeller required for the conditions, gear ration settings, the amount of fuel needed and race tactics. Propeller choice is critical.

A Class 1 race boat has twin inboard 1100hp engines and can reach speeds in excess of 160mph. All boats are limited by a minimum weight of 4,950kg. Each boat in the Class 1 fleet is around 12-14 metres in length and 3.5 metres wide. Safety is a priority and the cockpit is reinforced to withstand enormous impacts. Inside the cockpit there are satellite GPS systems, trim indicators, engine date dashboards and instrument panels. While a Class 1 race boat is highly technical and state-of-the-art, the skill of the crew and the relationship between the driver and throttleman who navigate and control the power is ultimately the defining factor and crucial to performance.

You can watch F1 Powerboat races on the Mississippi River in Alton this weekend for free

The F1 Midwest Powerboat tournament will take place this weekend in Alton.

Qualifying begins Saturday at 10:20 a.m. with races later that day and final heats finishing Sunday. The event, which is free to spectators, spans the Mississippi River and is viewable from Riverfront Park in Alton.

Four classes of boats will participate in six to eight races — F1 Powerboats, 12-foot tunnel boats, tri-hulls, and a type of small riding boat called a J-Hydro for racers aged nine to 16.

The event is expected to draw “20,000-plus spectators and bring in an economic impact to the region of over $2.5 million,” F1 said in a statement.

Trinidad and Tobago Newsday

First-ever Great Race winner Lennox Tang Yuk dies, hailed as pioneer

Winner of the first Great Race 'Cam-Ena', in 1969 -

The TT Powerboat Association (TTPBA) is mourning the loss of its first-ever Great Race winner, Lennox Tang Yuk, who died of cancer on June 24.

Tang-Yuk won the inaugural inter-island race between Trinidad and Tobago in 1969. He piloted "a 21-foot wooden deep vee – Cam-Ena – to victory,” a TTPBA statement said.

Ten years later, Tang Yuk sped to Great Race victory once more, this time, in a 28-foot cutlass called Blackmax.

The TTPBA hailed Tang Yuk as a “true powerboating enthusiast” and recognised his longstanding contributions to the sport’s development.

“Tang Yuk, even after hanging up his racing helmet...has since contributed consistently to the TT Powerboat Association particularly as the finish boat in Tobago for the Great Race, with his 47th sport fisher Grand Slam,” the statement added.

The executive committee sent its “deepest condolences to his grieving family, friends and entire powerboat fraternity, as we mourn the loss of a true legend of the sport.”

TTPBA president Johnathan Tardieu called Tang Yuk’s death a “a huge loss” to the powerboat fraternity.

“Winning the Great Race once is an accomplishment, far less for winning it twice. In addition to that, he was our Great Race finish boat for quite some time, maybe up until 2022. And I think he missed last year’s edition because he was out of the country.

"Even when he stopped racing he still continued contributing to the association as best as he could. To lose pioneers like that is really is always a huge loss for us,” Tardieu said.

Tang Yuk’s funeral will be held July 1 at St Finbar’s RC Church on Morne Coco Road in Diego Martin from 10.30am, followed by a private cremation.

SHEBOYGAN — Powerboat racing will return to Sheboygan’s shore this summer, after bringing in $4.7 million in visitor spending last year.

The city has been selected as a site for the Mercury Racing Midwest Challenge for a second year, in partnership with Fond du Lac-based marine and automotive parts manufacturer Mercury Racing and Powerboat P1 .

This time, the competition will be open to all offshore classes, according to a news release.

“I am thrilled to welcome back this exhilarating event to the ' Malibu of the Midwest ,'” Mayor Ryan Sorenson said in a news release. "It not only showcases our city’s stunning waterfront but also brings together the community in celebration of speed, skill and the thrill of competition. This sense of excitement and unity contributes to the vibrancy of Sheboygan.”

The powerboat racing will take place Aug. 9-11 this year. The competition in Sheboygan is one of several locations announced in the P1 Offshore and Class 1 race calendar, along with Sarasota and St. Petersburg in Florida.

The three-day event debuted in August 2023, drawing about 43,000 visitors and more than 40 racing teams to the area. There was a block party, meet-and-greet with race winners and brat fries in the city.

“This event not only brings a surge of energy to our city but also underscores our commitment to hosting world-class events,” City Administrator Casey Bradley said in a news release. “We appreciate the partnership with Powerboat P1 and Mercury Racing, and we eagerly anticipate the positive impact the race event will have on our local economy and community spirit.”

At this time, the Mercury event will just return for 2024. Sorenson said the city hasn't signed a three-year contract, which was rumored over the summer.
