If you are looking for a game requiring little skill and a good deal of luck, then this may be the game for you. Yacht is a very simple game which uses nothing more than 5 dice, a cup to shake them in, and a score sheet. Despite its simplicity, the “high” of getting spectacular rolls of the dice is palpable. The skill of the game comes entirely in the form of decision making. The decisions one must make involve taking calculated risks, and knowing how to score your rolls.
Number of Players
As few as 2 and as many as you like.
5 six-sided dice (with optional dice cup), 1 specially prepared score sheet per player.
Download a score sheet. (If you do not have Adobe Acrobat Reader, download it for free here .)
Each player rolls to determine who plays first (high roll wins), and play proceeds to the left. A player starts their turn by first rolling all 5 dice. They are allowed up to 2 more rolls (for a maximum of 3 rolls per turn). Each time a player rolls, they may choose to hold (or set aside) as many of the dice as they wish, and re-roll the remaining dice in an attempt to achieve certain goals as outlined by the score sheet. At any time during a players turn, they may stop rolling and use what is showing on all 5 dice to fill in a spot on their score sheet.
Once a spot has been filled in on the score sheet, it can not be changed.
Score Sheet
Each player has their own individual sheet prepared with a series of categories divided into two sections (an “upper” and a “lower”). Each category represents a specific combination of dice, and should have a space next to it to fill in the score for that category. The categories are:
Upper Section
Lower Section
There should also be room at the bottom of the sheet to fill in the totals for both sections and add them together for a final total. At the end of a players turn, the player MUST write down a score next to one of the categories. The player may choose to fill in any category that has not been previously filled in (in either section), but their final combination of dice must meet the requirements for whatever category they select (other wise, they must fill in a 0 for that category).
For the upper section, each category simply represents the specific numbers rolled on the dice. To take a score in the upper section, merely write down the total of all numbers you rolled that correspond to the specific category. For example, if you roll three 1s, a 2, and a 4, you may total the 1s for a score of “3” in the 1s category (for the sake of argument, you could also take a score of “2” in 2s, or “9” in Three of a Kind, etc). The upper section bonus of 35 points is achieved if the combined total of all numbers scored in the upper section equal 63 points or more. A good thing to keep in mind when trying for this bonus is that scoring exactly 3 of each number (i.e. three 1s, three 2s, etc.), gives you exactly 63 points.
For the lower section, the roll requirements are more specific. For 3 of a kind, and 4 of a kind you must obviously have either 3 of one number or 4 of one number showing on the dice. If you have met this requirement, you may total ALL numbers on the dice and write the total in the appropriate category. For “chance,” there is no specific requirement to meet; you merely total all the dice. All other lower section categories have specific point values assigned to them. You may write down the point value for each of these categories upon achieving their roll requirements. Those requirements are:
You will notice while playing, that certain rolls can be taken in a variety of categories (for example a roll of 4, 4, 4, 6, 6, can be scored as 4’s, 6’s, 3 of a kind, Full house, or Chance…or, you can take a “0” anywhere else). In these situations, it is up to you to decide where to write down a score. In the event that your final roll of the dice on your turn produces a roll that does not meet ANY requirements on the score sheet, then a score of “0” must be taken in the open category of your choosing.
Bonus Yachts
If you have already filled in the yacht category (with either 50 points or zero), and you roll a yacht…that yacht may be used as a “wildcard” anywhere else on the sheet (for example: it may be used as a full house, small straight, etc.). Also, if you have already scored 50 points in the yacht category, each additional yacht rolled is worth a bonus of 100 points (in addition to whatever the subsequent yachts are scored as).
When every category on every player’s score sheet has been filled in, the game is over. Each player then totals all of the values from each and every category on the sheet (remembering to include any bonuses). The player with the highest total score is the winner.
Yacht is a public domain dice game, similar to the Latin American game Generala , the English game of Poker Dice, the Scandinavian Yatzy , and Cheerio. Yahtzee (trademarked in the United States by Hasbro) is a later development, similar to Yacht in both name and content.
The name Yacht is also used for a number of later dice games that include many features of Yahtzee, being closer to Yahtzee than the original Yacht game.
The object of the game is to score points by rolling five dice to make certain combinations. The dice can be rolled up to three times in a turn to try to make these combinations. A game consists of twelve rounds. After each round the player chooses which scoring category is to be used for that round. Once a category has been used in the game, it cannot be used again. The scoring categories have varying point values, some of which are fixed values and others where the score depends on the value of the dice. A Yacht is five-of-a-kind and scores 50 points; the highest of any category. The winner is the player who scores most points.
The following are the 12 categories and the points scored in those categories:
Category | Description | Score | Example |
---|---|---|---|
Ones | Any combination | The sum of dice with the number 1 | |
Twos | Any combination | The sum of dice with the number 2 | |
Threes | Any combination | The sum of dice with the number 3 | |
Fours | Any combination | The sum of dice with the number 4 | |
Fives | Any combination | The sum of dice with the number 5 | |
Sixes | Any combination | The sum of dice with the number 6 | |
Full House | Three of one number and two of another | Sum of all dice | |
Four-Of-A-Kind | At least four dice showing the same face | Sum of those four dice | |
Little Straight | 1-2-3-4-5 | Varies Often 30 | |
Big Straight | 2-3-4-5-6 | Varies Often 30 | |
Choice | Any combination | Sum of all dice | |
Yacht | All five dice showing the same face | 50 |
If a category is chosen but the dice do not match the requirements of the category the player scores 0 in that category.
A Yacht cannot be scored on Full House but can be scored on Four of a Kind, although the fifth dice is not counted in the score. The score for the Straights vary, but 30 is a typical score for each.
The maximum possible score depends on the scoring rules used but with the above rules and both straights counting 30, the maximum score is 297.

The rules of Yacht differ from those of Yahtzee in a number of ways:
There are a number of differences to the category names compared to Yahtzee. "Aces" is often called "Ones", "Small Straight" is called "Little Straight", "Large Straight" is called "Big Straight", "Yahtzee" is called "Yacht" and "Chance" is called "Choice". The order of the categories on the score sheet can also be different to that used on a Yahtzee score sheet. There is no "upper" or "lower" section scoring, just a "Total" row at the bottom of the score sheet.
Although there are no official rules for Yacht, the scoring of some categories generally differs from that used in Yahtzee. Four-of-a-kind scores the sum of those four dice, not all five dice. Full house scores the sum of the five dice, not a fixed score of 25. The scores for the straights can be different to that used in Yahtzee.

Learn more with our guide on how to play Yahtzee .
Aim for the upper boxes first; try to get three of a kind for each number, especially the highest numbers (5 and 6).
Try only going for Chance if it's either 25 points or above, or if you have no other good plays.
How many dice are in yahtzee.
If you roll five dice at once, you'll get a Yahtzee. Chances are, if you're playing Yahtzee, you're wondering how to gain more points. If you throw a Yahtzee and have already scored 50 in the Yahtzee box, you'll get a bonus plus an extra 100 points. However, if you throw a Yahtzee, but your score in the Yahtzee box is zero, you get no points.
Yahtzee is a dice game that involves a lot of luck, but you can also make strategic choices . You begin your turn by rolling five dice. Next, you may choose to re-roll any number of those dice, but not more than three times.
In order to get a Yahtzee every time, try to get 63 points in the upper section early in the game. To maximize your score, it's important that you balance the scores between the upper and lower sections. To get a Yahtzee, leave your chance roll until late in the game when there are fewer options.
"The Yacht Game" was invented by a Canadian couple in 1954 who started out by playing with their friends while sailing on their yacht. Their friends got really attached to the game, and that's when the couple approached Edwin S. Lowe to see if he could produce sets that they could give to their friends as gifts. Lowe saw potential in the game, acquired the rights, and renamed it Yahtzee.
Yahtzee first came out on the computer in 1978 on the Apple II. While the computer supported color graphics, Apple's version of the game was black-and-white and text based . Its introduction to computers marked a major step forward for the game.
In our game, we automatically keep track of the score for you, and help you determine the winner of the game. However, if you're playing in person, you can print our Yahtzee score card to tally up points.

The builder of the sunken superyacht owned by British billionaire Mike Lynch, who died with six others after the vessel went down earlier this week , is blaming an "endless chain of errors" for the maritime disaster.
Flying under a British flag, the 184 foot Bayesian was built in 2008 by Italian builders Perini Navi and should've been "unsinkable" had proper procedures been followed, argues Giovanni Costantino, CEO of the Italian Sea Group, which owns the yacht manufacturer.
"Everything that has been done reveals a very long sum of errors," Costantino told Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera in an interview, as translated by People . "The people should not have been in the cabins, the boat should not have been at anchor. And then why didn't the crew know about the incoming disturbance?"
An investigation into the sinking is ongoing. It's believed that a small waterspout , or a waterborne tornado, struck the vessel as it was anchored off the coast of Porticello, Sicily, around 5 am local time on Monday, according to CNN .
At some point after encountering the fierce winds, the ship's towering mast — the second tallest aluminum mast in the world — snapped, before the vessel appears to have capsized and sank with 22 people on board.
Costantino argues — pretty bluntly, we have to say — that the crew and passengers should've anticipated the stormy conditions.
"The passengers reported an absurd thing, namely that the storm came unexpected, suddenly," he said in the interview, per People . "It's not true. Everything was predictable. I have the weather charts in front of me here. Nothing came suddenly."
"Ask yourself, why was no fisherman from Porticello out that night?" he added. "A fisherman reads the weather conditions and a ship doesn't? The disturbance was fully readable in all the weather charts."
Their errors didn't end there, according to Costantino, who said in the interview that there would've been "zero risk" had the right maneuvers been made.
The captain and crew, he further explained to the New York Times , should've turned on the engine, lifted anchor, steered the boat into the wind, and lowered the keel for extra stability, while the passengers should've been gathered in the deck's main hall.
Another precaution would be shutting all the doors and hatches on the ship's side and stern. Costantino claimed that the Bayesian could list, or tilt to one side, to 75 degrees without capsizing, and shouldn't have sunk. But if some of those doors and hatches were left open, he told NYT , the ship could've taken on water too quickly.
As it stands, it's unclear how many of these procedures were executed. The ship's captain, James Cutfield, survived the ordeal and was questioned by authorities, but has not spoken to the media.
It's worth noting that Costantino's arguments could be seen as trying to exonerate his company of any wrongdoing. That being said, the speed at which a vessel of Bayesian's size and reputation sank has stunned sailors and investigators , who are trying to understand why most of the crew survived while six passengers perished.

Hannah Lynch, the 18-year-old daughter of the British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, was on board a yacht that was hit by a storm and went down in the early hours on Monday.
By Emma Bubola and Elisabetta Povoledo
Emma Bubola reported from Porticello, Italy, and Elisabetta Povoledo from Pallanza, Italy.
For nearly a week after a violent storm sent a luxury yacht to the bottom of the sea off the coast of Sicily, Italian scuba divers plunged deep underwater, moving through ropes and fallen objects inside the yacht in a desperate search for the six people missing.
On Friday, the recovery of the body of Hannah Lynch, 18, put an end to the wrenching search and to the slim hopes that any of the missing people might have survived.
Ms. Lynch, the daughter of the British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, who also died in the yacht’s sinking, was the last person to be formally unaccounted for since Monday after tragedy struck a group that had been celebrating her father’s acquittal in a high-profile fraud case.
There were 10 crew members and 12 passengers on board the 180-foot vessel, the Bayesian, when it was hit by a storm and went down about 4.30 a.m. on Monday, the boat’s management company said on Friday.
Fifteen survived.
The body of the ship’s cook, Recaldo Thomas, was found on Monday, a few hours after a downpour hit the northwestern coast of Sicily, near the port of Porticello, where the yacht had been anchored.
But it took several days to recover the bodies of the six passengers who were apparently trapped inside the yacht: Mr. Lynch and Ms. Lynch; Jonathan Bloomer, the chairman of Morgan Stanley International; his wife, Judy Bloomer; Christopher J. Morvillo, a lawyer at Clifford Chance; and his wife, Neda Morvillo.
On Friday, a round of applause could be heard from the firefighter’s tent set up on the dock in Porticello after the last body was pulled out in what the corps described as a “complex” search operation at a depth of about 165 feet. The firefighters said they had made 123 immersions into the sea to try to retrieve the bodies.
The body bag was then loaded onto an ambulance. A local man had left a small wooden cross on the rocks in front of the dock where the bodies were brought ashore.
Mr. Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, was among those who managed to reach the safety of a raft. They were rescued by a sailing schooner that had been bobbing about 150 yards from the yacht.
In a statement, the family thanked the search teams and said that it was enduring a “time of unspeakable grief.”
“The Lynch family is devastated, in shock and is being comforted and supported by family and friends,” the statement added.
As prosecutors from the nearby city of Termini Imerese began conducting interviews with the survivors and possible witnesses, the crew and passengers of the Bayesian have been confined to a local hotel, where the news media have been denied access.
Salvatore Cocina, the head of Sicily’s civil protection agency, said on Thursday that the survivors had turned down the psychological assistance his department had offered to them.
In Porticello, the sprawling presence of rescue services made a haunting backdrop for an otherwise tranquil port town. People sunbathed and ate ricotta-filled pastries, and stores selling sandals and dried fruit opened as normal, while coast guard and firefighting vessels came and went from the shore, taking scuba divers out to the shipwreck.
Other reminders of the tragedy could be seen along the coast, among palm trees and ice cream shops, with groups of onlookers staring out at the sea, now tranquil and flat.
Local and national news organizations have complained that prosecutors have not issued a statement or held a news conference. Prosecutors may shed more light on the yacht’s sinking when they hold a news conference on Saturday.
The marine accident investigation branch of the British transportation ministry was also looking into the shipwreck of the vessel, which was registered in Britain.
One of the major questions is what caused the boat to sink: Was it the fault of the boat maker, of the crew or of a powerful act of nature — or some combination of the three? None of those who were onboard the Bayesian have spoken publicly.
The luxury yacht, built by the Italian manufacturer Perini Navi and launched in 2008, had the second-tallest aluminum mast in the world, according to its makers.
Giovanni Costantino, the chief executive of the Italian Sea Group, which in 2022 bought Perini Navi, has been assertive in defending the design and construction of the yacht, saying that the Bayesian would be “unsinkable” if the proper procedures were followed.
But yacht design experts have cautioned that the lesson of the Titanic, the ocean liner that sank on its 1912 maiden voyage, showed that no vessel, no matter how robust, was worthy of that label.
Nautilus International, a maritime-focused labor union, criticized any implication that the crew had been at fault, especially at this stage. In a statement , the union’s general secretary, Mark Dickinson, said, “Experience tells us that maritime tragedies are always the result of multiple, interconnected factors,” and he urged people to refrain from drawing any conclusions until a thorough investigation had been carried out.
The investigation into the causes will take months, prosecutors said.
Michael J. de la Merced contributed reporting.

Seattle sacks servais as manager after blowing 10-game al west lead.
Pensive Scott Servais, unable to rally his Mariners after a strong start to the 2024 season, has ... [+] been fired with six weeks left. (Photo by Steph Chambers/Getty Images)
The only team without a pennant is now without its manager too.
Scott Servais was fired Thursday after running the team since 2016.
This looked like the year things would change but the team went into a prolonged slump after building a 10-game lead in the American League West by June 19.
Since then, the team went 20-33 – a record worse than any rival outside of the hapless Chicago White Sox (10-43 over the same span).
As a result, Seattle blew its 10-game lead within a 24-game span and started play Thursday five games behind the Houston Astros in the division and seven-and-a-half games out of the race for the American League’s final wild-card slot.
After a 1-8 road trip, Seattle’s record stood at 64-64 – not what president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto envisioned for his pitching-rich team. He reacted by canning Servais, who had served longer than any Seattle pilot not named Lou Piniella.
In fact, only Piniella, who managed the Mariners for 10 seasons, had a better winning percentage than Servais, who wound up with a .515 mark (680-642).
A former catcher with no other managerial experience, the 59-year-old Servais had been hired after the 2015 campaign. He found immediate success, leading the club to an 86-76 record, one of five winning seasons his teams produced.
Bayesian yacht: bodies of entrepreneur michael lynch and morgan stanley chief recovered in italy, oprah endorses kamala harris at dnc: her political history—and rare endorsements—explained.
A lack of hitting killed Seattle’s season in 2024. The team sabotaged a solid pitching staff with a .216 team average, .301 on-base percentage, and .365 slugging average so far this season and struck out more often than any other team, with a 27.7% strikeout rate.
Even adding Randy Arozarena from Tampa Bay before the trade deadline did not spark Seattle's ... [+] stagnant offense. (Photo by Stephen Brashear/Getty Images)
Dipoto obtained Tampa Bay Rays outfielder Randy Arozarena just before the July 30 trade deadline but did not get immediate results. Previous Dipoto deals also had mixed results – especially the one that sent flame-throwing closer Edwin Diaz to the New York Mets in a multi-player deal that netted Jarred Kelenic (now with Atlanta).
The Mariners won 90 games in 2021 and 2022 – reaching the playoffs for the first time since 2001 – but fell one game short last year with 88 victories.
They beat the Blue Jays in Toronto in the three-game 2022 American League wild card series but were swept by the Astros in the AL division series. Then they were eliminated from playoff participation after their 161st game a year later, when Seattle had hoped to host both the All-Star Game (which it did) and its first World Series (did not).
Signs of this year’s coming apocalypse occurred early. The offense was so awful that Brant Brown, a Servais confidante, was fired as offensive coordinator on May 31 and rumblings of other moves enveloped the team — especially after ownership, saddled with declining revenue from its regional sports network, decided to pare payroll.
Servais will be succeeded by another former catcher, Dan Wilson, according to reports in The Athletic . Wilson is a member of the Mariners Hall of Fame but has never managed or coached in the majors.
The new manager spent 1992-2005 as a catcher in the majors, mostly with the Mariners, and later became Seattle’s minor-league catching instructor. He has been a special assistant during major-league spring training as well.
Salary terms were not immediately revealed.
In addition to Wilson, the M’s are hoping to boost their stagnant offense by adding Hall of Fame slugger Edgar Martinez to their coaching staff.
A seven-time All-Star and four-time playoff qualifier, Martinez spent his entire 18-year career with Seattle, hitting .312 with a .418 on-base percentage, .515 slugging percentage, and 309 home runs.
He was voted Outstanding Designated Hitter (now named the Edgar Martinez Award) five times over a seven-year span.

Italian authorities say the bodies of all seven people who died after a sailing yacht sank on Monday have now been recovered. The final discovery was announced on Friday; the other six bodies had been found after the calamity.
Tech mogul Mike Lynch is among the people whose bodies were recovered from the sailing yacht, called Bayesian. The massive yacht sank in a violent storm along the shore of Sicily early on Monday.
Italian divers on Friday recovered the body of Lynch’s daughter Hannah, 18, who was the last person unaccounted for.
Lynch’s body was identified on Thursday, according to The Associated Press and other news outlets, citing the Italian coast guard. The agency did not immediately respond to messages from NPR.
The sea rescue operation included 123 dives, according to the Italian fire brigade . Robotic craft have also been used in the search.
Local newspaper Giornale di Sicilia reports that Lynch’s daughter, Hannah, 18, is believed to be the only remaining missing person from the calamity.
Bayesian, with a length of more than 180 feet, had 22 passengers and crew aboard when it sank in the pre-dawn hours of Monday morning. Eyewitness accounts cited a waterspout — a highly localized spiraling storm that’s essentially a marine tornado. One body was found, and 15 survivors made it to safety. That left six people unaccounted for.
Since then, the Italian Coast Guard has been working to find survivors -- and as time passed, what started as a rescue effort became a recovery operation to retrieve bodies from inside the sunken ship.
The Palermo Coast Guard told NPR that the operation has been complicated by the depth and position of the hull, which lies on the seabed at a depth of around 50 meters, about a half-mile from the port in Porticello, Sicily.
The six passengers who had been unaccounted for include Lynch and his daughter, along with Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife. Judy. A lawyer for Lynch named Chris Morvillo, and his wife, Neda, were also missing in the days after the yacht sank.
One member of the crew -- Recaldo Thomas, the yacht’s chef -- also went missing. Local news reports have suggested it was Thomas’ body that was found soon after the ship sank.
Survivors include Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, along with Charlotte Golunski, who works at Invoke Capital, Lynch’s venture capital firm. Golunski was on the ship with her daughter, Sofia, who had just celebrated her first birthday.
In an interview with La Repubblica , Golunski said that as the ship sank, she used all her strength to hold her arms above water and prevent Sofia from drowning. Sofia’s father was also onboard and survived.
Ayla Ronald, a lawyer who worked on Lynch’s fraud case, and her partner also escaped the wreck. Other survivors include several crew members, including two women in their early 20s who were part of the ship’s staff.
Lynch, 59, was the founder of Autonomy, a search engine and software company. Hewlett-Packard bought Autonomy for $11 billion in 2011, but Lynch then faced accusations — and then federal fraud charges — that he had misrepresented his company’s financial health and prospects. Lynch denied the claims, saying HP was blaming him for its own problems.
This past June, a lengthy trial in San Francisco ended with Lynch’s acquittal of all charges against him , after he testified on his own behalf. The sailing voyage along the coast of Sicily has been portrayed as a celebration of the end of the court case.
