Windstar Cruises Yacht Club loyalty program: Everything you need to know

MSN has partnered with The Points Guy for our coverage of credit card products. MSN and The Points Guy may receive a commission from card issuers.

Seattle-based Windstar Cruises is a relatively small line, but it offers a big loyalty program that can bring you all sorts of great perks if you sail regularly with the brand.

Dubbed the Yacht Club, the four-tier program, which was massively upgraded in late 2020 , offers its higher-tier members such valuable perks as a $100-per-person onboard credit for every sailing, free laundry service on ships and free Wi-Fi. Higher-tier members also get significant discounts on cruises, beverage packages, shore excursions and more.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG’s cruise newsletter .

The program was upgraded at the same time that the six-ship line expanded its capacity with a massive makeover and enlargement of three of its vessels. The $250-million Star Plus Initiative, as it was called, brought new suites, restaurants, pool decks and more to the line’s three yacht-like motor vessels — Star Breeze, Star Legend and Star Pride.

All three of the vessels also were lengthened by around 20%.

Ways to earn points

The Yacht Club point-earning system is relatively straightforward. In most cases, members earn 1 point for every day they sail on a Windstar vessel. The only exception is for passengers staying in top suites. Customers staying in Wind Class suites or Deluxe suites on Star Plus Class ships will get 1.5 points for every day they sail. Those staying in Owner’s suites and Classic suites on Star Plus Class vessels will get 2 points for every day they sail, as will passengers staying in the Bridge Suite on the Wind Surf.

Program tiers and benefits

There are four tiers to the Yacht Club program:

  • One Star (1 to 15 points)
  • Two Star (16 to 39 points)
  • Three Star (40 to 89 points)
  • Four Star (90 or more points)

Even at the lowest One Star level, the perks are fairly robust, at least as compared to loyalty programs of many of Windstar’s small-ship cruise line competitors.

Yacht Club members at all four tiers get a 5% discount on fares when booking a cruise. That’s a great perk, as it amounts to real money in your pocket. But it gets even better if you book a cruise while on board a Windstar ship or within 60 days of departing one. In such cases, Yacht Club members will get an additional 5% discount on fares — bringing the total savings to 10%.

Related: A beginner’s guide to cruise line loyalty programs

In select cases, Yacht Club members will be rewarded for their loyalty with even bigger discounts. As part of the program, members can snag an even heftier 20% discount on select Yacht Club member sailings. One caveat: The 20% discount won’t be combinable with other offers.

In addition, all Yacht Club members get:

  • Advance notification of new deployments
  • Advance notification of sales events
  • Members-only private sales
  • A $100 shipboard credit when referring a new customer to Windstar. The customer also will receive a $100 onboard credit.
  • Exclusive members-only cocktail party with ship officers
  • Exclusive onboard tote
  • Additional discounts at sister Xanterra Travel Collection brands (more on that below)

Plus, starting at the One Star level, customers get a 5% discount on laundry service, Wi-Fi and Windstar merchandise whenever they sail with the line. Note that the Wi-Fi discount only applies to Wi-Fi purchased individually and not as part of the line’s All-Inclusive Fares.

At the Two Star level, customers get all the above plus a 5% discount on shore excursions and beverage packages (again, the latter discount does not apply to the line’s All-Inclusive Fares). They also get a $50 per person onboard credit for every cruise they take.

The elite level that makes a difference

We’re impressed with all four levels of the Windstar Yacht Club loyalty program. Even at the lowest tier, it brings real savings for loyal passengers. And the shore excursion and beverage package discounts that come with the Two Star level are enticing in our eyes.

That said, we start to get really excited about the Three Star tier. It bumps the discounts for laundry service, Wi-Fi, shore excursions and Windstar merchandise to 10%. If you’re the kind of cruiser who does a shore excursion in every port and regularly uses onboard services, such as laundry and Wi-Fi, this could save you $100 or more on a typical seven-night cruise.

The Three Star tier also comes with an onboard credit of $75 per person for every cruise you take. That’s more real money in your pocket.

Best elite perk

It’s a tough call on the best elite perk of the Windstar Cruises Yacht Club loyalty program. Unlike some frequent cruiser programs, there isn’t one clear standout perk, such as the free cruise that Royal Caribbean Crown & Anchor Society members get after reaching the top Pinnacle Club level.

At the top Four Star tier level of the Yacht Club program, passengers get free laundry service and free Wi-Fi on every sailing, which are both valuable perks. But the most generous perk may be the 15% discount on shore excursions that comes with Four Star status. That’s assuming you are the type of cruiser who signs up for a lot of cruise line-organized shore excursions. If you spend $1,000 a week on excursions, that perk alone is worth $150 per seven-night cruise.

Related: The ultimate guide to picking a cruise line

At the Four Star level, members also get a 15% credit on Windstar merchandise and a 10% discount on beverage packages. The onboard credit increases to $100 per person for every cruise you take.

One thing we like about the Yacht Club program is that it doesn’t take all that many cruises to reach the top Four Star level. For someone staying in a standard cabin, it would require the completion of 13 seven-night cruises. That’s not all that hard to do in just four or five years, assuming you cruise two or three times a year. But, if you stay in suites, you could hit the Four Star level far more quickly. It would take just seven seven-night cruises.

You can hit the top Four Star level even more quickly if you sign up for Windstar’s longer “Star Collector” voyages of 14 to 60 days. With the right mix of such sailings, you could reach Four Star status in just two or three sailings.

Related: Windstar will let you book a cabin in a crew area

Indeed, someone staying in a top suite on one of the longer Star Collector sailings, in theory, could hit the Four Star level after just a single cruise.

Note that, as is often the case with cruise line loyalty programs, Windstar customers do not have to re-qualify for status each year. Yacht Club members keep their points at the end of each year and continue to accrue points indefinitely. That means that someone who hits Four Star status will remain at that top tier level forever (or until Windstar makes a change to the program).

Such “forever status” is one of the great allures of cruise line frequent cruiser programs. Many airline frequent flyer programs, by contrast, require loyalty members to re-qualify for status each year.

Benefits at Xanterra Travel Collection brands

In addition to discounts and other perks at Windstar, Yacht Club loyalty program members are entitled to special perks at hotels, lodges and other travel vendors owned by Windstar’s parent company, The Anschutz Corporation.

Based in Denver, The Anschutz Corporation owns such iconic hotels as The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and the Sea Island Resort just off the Georgia coast. It also owns two hotel properties near national parks (The Grand Hotel near the Grand Canyon and Cedar Creek Lodge near Glacier National Park) and is the largest national and state park concessioner in the United States. Among the national parks where it is the concessionaire are Yellowstone National Park, Grand Canyon National Park and Glacier National Park.

Related: How to plan a cruise with points and miles

Other Anschutz travel holdings include the Grand Canyon Railway & Hotel and tour companies VBT Bicycling Vacations, Country Walkers and Holiday Vacations.

Together, all of the hotels, lodges and travel companies are known as the Xanterra Travel Collection. The perks available to Yacht Club members at Xanterra Travel Collection entities vary but often take the form of credit. At the Sea Island Resort, for instance, members are entitled to a $200 resort credit.

Bottom line

It’s unusual for a cruise line as small as Windstar to have such a great loyalty program. Massively upgraded in October 2020, Windstar’s four-tier Yacht Club loyalty program brings a lot of great perks even at the lowest One Star tier level, including across-the-board discounts on cruise fares. At the highest Four Star level, it brings a significant amount of value.

What is a Boat Club? (Your Best Option to Try Before You Buy)

2020 brought us all a new way of looking at the world.  From shutdowns to lots of time at home, everyone experienced a change to their lifestyle, and for many that meant getting outside.  Boating was no exception and thousands took to the water for the first time.

According to statistics by the  National Marine Manufacturers Association,  recreational  boat sales were up 13% from 2019 .  That’s a huge jump in just one year, and as a pontoon boat manufacturer, the Barletta crew was astonished by how many new boaters entered the industry.

If you were one of the many that turned to the boating lifestyle as an outlet for getting out of your home and enjoying some sort of normal, you’re not alone.  However, if you’re interested in getting on the water but are still unsure about owning your own boat, there’s a great solution.

Boat clubs are rapidly gaining popularity for this exact reason.  These clubs offer all the joys of owning a boat with none of the hassle.  Don’t know what a boat club is?  I’m going to explain what being a member is like and why it could be a great choice for you.

What is a Boat Club?

The concept of a boat club has been around for a while.  In more recent years, they’ve grown in popularity and are quickly becoming a great choice for those who want to use a boat without the commitment of actually owning a boat.

I talked with Bryan Wallace of  Nautical Boat Club , considered the Boating Country Club®, and he explained what it’s all about.   A boat club is a members only club that allows you to use different boats offered at a specific location and locations nationwide, usually at a marina, throughout the boating season.

You will typically find boat clubs partnered with marinas that are located near big water and large metropolitan areas.  Since they’re gaining momentum, you could expect to see boat clubs in more places in the future.

This is for boaters who want to own a boat but don’t necessarily have the time that boat ownership requires.    This experience differs from boat rentals because as a member, you can come and go all season long using different types of boats at your leisure.

Most people who plan on renting a boat do so for a specific occasion lasting one maybe two days, or an entire weekend.  Being a member of a boat club allows you to have access to boats as many times as you would like without the hassle of renting every time you want to go out on the water.

Becoming a member of a boat club is a great supplement for those who want to be on the water but don’t want the investment that comes with owning a boat of their own.

How Does a Boat Club Work?

If you have a boat club near you and are thinking this may be the avenue you want to take, this is the process you will need to go through to become a member and get on the water.

Become a Member

Shop your local boat club and learn about the different levels of memberships that are offered.  Plans vary based on usage, types of boats you plan to use, and pricing.  No matter which level you choose, these clubs typically stock newer model year boats, so rest assured, you will have access to the latest and greatest.

For instance, the average lifespan of the boats available at Nautical Boat Club are 2-3 years old with an average price of $80K nationwide.

That means, you have your choice of high-end recreational   boats of all types .  As a member, you can   cruise on a pontoon boat   one day and wakeboard behind a towboat the next.

Membership pricing will vary between locations and clubs.  This ballpark pricing relates to Nautical Boat Club.

Typically, there will be a one time membership fee in the ballpark of $3-$10k.

Then there are monthly fees anywhere from $300-$1,000.

Your membership is good for one year and pricing depends on location, the plan that you select, and local taxes.  Once you’ve completed the membership process, the club will teach you everything you need to know about boating.

Get Comfortable Driving a Boat

This is a huge bonus for a member that may not have boating experience yet.  You will be required to go through an orientation then on-water training with a staff member.

They will make sure you’re confident and comfortable driving a boat before you ever take off from the dock on your own.

The on-water training will teach you how to drive and operate each style of boat that you will be responsible for.  That means, if you plan to hop from towboats, to cabin cruisers, to  pontoon boats , the club staff will make sure you’re properly trained on how to drive each type of boat.

Make a Reservation

Once you’re confident in your boating skills and are ready to hit the water, the next thing you must do is make a reservation.  You will want to plan in advance and make a reservation at least 14 days out from when you would like to use the boat.

Planning ahead will ensure that you get to reserve the type of boat you want for the period of time you would like.    Making a reservation will be the most work you have to put into this boating experience.

Get on the Water

You’ve reserved a boat and the day has come, now you just have to bring your cooler, your towels, and your family to the marina and hop on board.   The rest is taken care of from   safety gear   such as life jackets, to ropes and fenders, the club will provide everything.

You will also have the option to reserve water sport equipment in advance so it’s ready to go when you get there.  All you need to worry about is if the cooler is iced down and you  remembered to bring your SPF .

When you’re done for the day, the only thing you need to do before docking the boat is to replenish the gas tank.   Once it’s filled up, bring it back in and you can head out leaving the cleaning and maintenance behind.

All care and maintenance is handled by the marina and is a part of your membership.  Like I mentioned before, you get all the joys of boating without any of the hassle.

Join the Club

If you’re ready to be on the water but not ready to own a boat, joining a boat club is the perfect way to get where you want to be.  Becoming a member is easy and once you join the club, you have access to all different types of boating experiences.

“It’s as easy as coming to the marina, bring your kids and your cooler, and enjoy your day on the water,” Bryan explains.

From sailboats, to pontoons, to center consoles, the options are endless.  And have no fear, the staff at your club will make sure you are confident in your boat driving skills before you take your maiden voyage.

Keep in mind, this is a great option for those who want to enjoy the water or are wanting to learn what they enjoy most about being on a boat.  Are you looking to cruise with the kids?  Are you wondering if you would enjoy wakesurfing?  Maybe you want to learn how to sail.

The intentions of a boat club are to get you on the water and to help you figure out what your ultimate day on the boat looks like.  Boat clubs are not necessarily the way to go if you’re just looking for a weekend party barge.

If you’re up for responsibly boating with family and friends, and are not ready for boat ownership, joining a boat club might be for you.

I signed up for 'session 3' sailing lessons several months in advance and paid the full price up front. I ended up having a work conflict that I can't get out of so I called and spoke with Christina Travis (sailing program manager) on 05/23 asking if I could possibly be put in another class (session 3 is Aug 7-17th) and she said 'there are over 25 people on the waitlist. We just added session 3 this year because the waitlists are so long'. So imagine my surprise when she said there is a $100 cancellation fee. I am cancelling almost 3 months in advance, and they have plenty of people to fill my spot. Not a great business model. I would definitely understand if I left them hanging with short notice then I wouldn't argue on the cancellation fee. She was extremely rude and said she needed to hold people accountable. I would not recommend this business for sailing lessons. There are other options. .

SYC members only and their guests. We ate early dinner on Saturday. The drinks were great! The ahi is delicious. The burger came out as requested with lettuce wrapped instead of bun. Thank you SYC for being so accommodating and on point with hour service! Shout out to pops for taking us to the club!

I came in today with a few friends and boy can I say do NOT order the nachos. I was hoping for something great by the water but right when it came I could tell I would NOT, enjoy this meal. The nacho chips itself were stale, the cheese was just in the top layer leaving the bottom completely empty. The chicken was extremely dry and bland and most nachos are with shredded chicken not chopped. The sour cream tastes sour and expired and the "salsa" was mostly chopped onions. The guacamole was so chunky. The waiters were pretty nice but overall do NOT get the nachos I could barely take a few bites.

SYC is a club for boat lovers but also has an amazing formal restaurant, spacious casual restaurant with patio dining during summer and great views of the marina in Portage Bay. For boat owners, there are "out stations" throughout Puget Sound and reciprocal relationships with clubs across the world. The members and staff are very friendly.

They have really up'd their game! We went here for dinner the other day (our good friends are members) and it was obvious immediately that they had a new chef! For starters they included amuse-bousche which was smoked salmon on diced cucumbers with a hint of seasoning. It was delicious. When the entres came out the plating was impressive. I got the braised short rib. It was not served on the bone (which I loved)! It was extremely flavorful and melted in my mouth. All in all the Yacht Club really stepped up their game and I'm pleasantly surprised!

NOTE: THIS REVIEW IS SPECIFICALLY FOR SYC's FORMAL DINING ROOM, THE 'WARD ROOM'. SYC's Ward Room: The best restaurant in Seattle that you can't go to (unless you're [a] a member, [b] a guest of [a], [c] a visiting member of a reciprocal club, or [d] a visiting yachtsperson during Opening Day week. There are many reasons one can cite why SYC is simply 'TBGDYCITWWW'. You can list the outstations, the programs, the staff, and the facilities, but without a doubt one of our best-kept secrets is our fine dining facility, the Ward Room. There have been some great changes you may not be aware of if you haven't been there recently, and if you haven't you really owe it to yourself to come in and see what's happening; you will really be surprised and delighted! For one thing, the Ward Room's executive chef, Chef Breanna Beike (better known as Chef Bre), is a real talent! She is a highly imaginative young chef , much in the style of local greats Tom Douglas and Ethan Stowell. Under her direction, the Ward Room kitchen serves a full menu of Northwest Contemporary classics, featuring superb meats and seafood dishes. Chef Bre is making a name for herself on the Seattle culinary scene; she was a featured guest chef at Fare Start in 2014, showcasing her work alongside other hot talents like Joule's Rachel Yang, and Zoi Antonitsas of Westward! But where she really shines is the nights she puts on special events like her 'Bistro' nights, and the Wednesday Prix Fixe dinners! Bistro nights feature special menus with international flavor. Her French bistro night included such delights as classic steak frites, and the recent Italian bistro night showcased dishes like an incredible beef carpaccio, and homemade gnocchi topped with clams, mussels, and lobster, served in a sweet corn and saffron broth! The Prix Fixe dinners on Wednesday evening are a 'don't miss' event in the Ward Room! These are meals where the chef shares with diners a culinary tour of dishes designed to complement one another, telling a 'story in food' about chefs and their style. Chef Bre really cuts loose with a fantastic three-course meal where she puts together a different and unique menu each week of dishes designed to showcase her talents. At $31, this is an incredible value, as you would pay easily twice that a comparable hot local restaurants like The Walrus and the Carpenter or Sitka & Spruce. On these nights you can play sommeleir and bring your own wine - no corkage fee! How great a deal is this? Of course, the Ward Room also features an amazing collection of wines from around the world to satisfy any taste and budget, and the staff is well trained to help you make perfect choice! But the Ward Room is not just about a brilliant kitchen; the front of the house is just as delightful! Ward Room Manager Joseph Huber hails from Austria, and he and his team of top-notch servers bring a European touch to the Ward Room that is always elegant, but never stuffy! Unlike many local restaurants where the dining room is so loud you have to converse in what my mom called 'battlefield tones', the Ward Room is a serene, relaxing space; just perfect for unwinding after a long day, entertaining family or business colleagues, or enjoying a perfect romantic dinner with that special someone! Not that hungry? The Ward Room is still the place for you! Featuring superb soups and salads (it's one of the last places in Seattle where you can have a Caesar Salad prepared tableside!), The Ward Room is also a great place for a lighter bite as well (Top Tip: try the French onion soup; it's a SYC speciality!) Finally, contrary to what you might think, the Ward Room's dress code isn't tough. Jackets and ties are nice, but definitely not required. Fashion denim is OK too; just no ratty jeans or t-shirts, please! So if you haven't been to the Ward Room lately you owe it to yourself to see what all the excitement is about, and enjoy cutting-edge cuisine at prices that will surprise you! Make a reservation today and you'll be glad you did!

I attended a catered get-together event in June. The buffet of heavy appetizers was quite good! Varied and all delicious. They kept items replenished. The woman at the cash bar could use brushing up on her customer service. She was short with her responses and never smiled. The room was pleasant--a view down the lawn and part of their moorage. The building and decor feel dated--think the Caddyshack Country Club left unchanged since the early 1980s--but it's a historical building so I understand the desire to try to keep things traditional. It just could use some freshening up--carpets look tatty and women's bathroom is very 1960s feeling in furnishings.
